AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Individuals with neurodiversity, ADHD, autism, or anxiety disorders face challenges in focusing due to overwhelming sensory input from external stimuli, particularly in environments with competing noises, leading to difficulty in maintaining behavior composure and focus.

Method used

A communication system comprising a microphone and personal audio output devices worn by listeners that emit sound from both the speaker and a sound generation module, incorporating active noise cancellation and theta brain wave audio signals to enhance focus.

Benefits of technology

The system helps neurodiverse individuals and those with anxiety disorders to concentrate by filtering out ambient noise and providing focus-enhancing sounds, promoting inclusivity and improved focus in noisy environments.

Abstract

A communication system for transmitting sound from a speaker to one or more listeners comprises a microphone (12, fig.1) configured to capture sound from the speaker (1. Fig.1) and at least one personal audio output device 18 respectively configured to be worn by the listeners (3, fig.1). Each personal audio output device is in operative communication with the microphone to receive the captured sound therefrom. The respective audio device comprises a housing 20 configured to be worn by the respective listener; a speaker assembly 22 arranged to be located adjacent ears of the respective listener for emitting sound to the listener’s ears; a captured sound module configured to output a first sound signal including the sound from the microphone; a sound generation module 28 operatively connected to an audio source 54 storing one or more prerecorded audio files 56, and configured to output a second sound signal; and a mixing module 60 configured to combine the first and second sound signals and output the mixed sound to the speaker assembly. The system is intended to help neuro-diverse users to focus in an environment with competing noises e.g. a classroom-like or public address-like setting, or on a particular speaker.
