AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Conventional catalysts for producing methyl methacrylate from methacrolein and methanol suffer from low acid resistance, leading to neutralization with bases, and lack mechanical robustness and chemical stability, resulting in high by-product formation.

Method used

A catalyst comprising a noble metal, such as gold, supported on a silicon carbide carrier with a high surface area, which maintains activity in acidic or basic environments and reduces by-product formation.

Benefits of technology

The catalyst exhibits high selectivity and stability, with minimal wear and reduced by-product formation, maintaining activity over extended periods without the need for base neutralization.

Abstract

A catalyst containing a noble metal disposed on a carrier. The noble metal is present in an amount in the range of 0.1 wt% to 10 wt% based on the total weight of the catalyst. The carrier contains at least 50 wt% of silicon carbide based on the total weight of the carrier. The silicon carbide has a surface area of at least 5 m 2 / g. A method for preparing methyl methacrylate from methacrolein and methanol using the catalyst is also disclosed.
