A method for assembling a pilot into a torque converter housing is provided, comprising: (a) providing the pilot having an annular flange in a mating region; (b) forming a torque converter housing with a complementary recess or annular groove in the annular flange in a mating connection region; (c) positioning the pilot in the torque converter housing with the annular flange at least partially engaged in the complementary recess or annular groove; and (d) applying force and energy to the pilot to weld it to the torque converter housing. A torque converter assembly is also provided.
