[0019] Preferred embodiments of the embodiments are described in detail, examples of which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings. The following detailed description, with reference to the accompanying drawings, is intended to illustrate preferred embodiments of the embodiments, rather than merely show embodiments that can be implemented according to the embodiments. The following detailed description includes details to provide a thorough understanding of the embodiments. However, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that the embodiments may be practiced without these details.

[0020] While most of the terms used in the examples are commonly used in the field, some terms were arbitrarily selected by the applicant, and their meanings are described in detail in the following descriptions as needed. Therefore, the examples should be understood based on the intended meaning of the terms, not simply their names or meanings.

[0021] Figure 1 illustrates a display driving device according to embodiments.

[0022] The display driving device of FIG. 1 may include a first operation unit (100) and / or a second operation unit (101). The first operation unit (100) may be referred to as a LUT (Look Up Table) calculation unit. The second operation unit (101) may be referred to as an INDEX calculation unit. Each component of the display driving device according to the embodiments may correspond to hardware, software, a processor, and / or a combination thereof. For example, the first operation unit (100) may be software, and the second operation unit (101) may be hardware. The first operation unit (100) may be a system including a memory including instructions for LUT calculation, and a processor that performs LUT calculation and high-gray / low-gray calculation operations based on instructions stored in the memory.

[0023] The display driving method / device according to the embodiments can perform VWC (Adaptive VA panel Washout Compensation). The display driving device according to the embodiments can correspond to a display control device such as a T-CON or SoC (System on Chip).

[0024] The display driving method / device according to the embodiments can compensate for the disadvantage of poor viewing angle performance in LCD VA panels. For example, a look-up table (LUT) can be generated and compensated for by utilizing the characteristics of good viewing angle in low-grayscale / high-grayscale gamma.

[0025] The display driving method / device according to the embodiments can measure the luminance information of the panel. Using the measured luminance information of the panel, a look-up table (LUT) that outputs high-gradation (High) / low-gradation (Low) pixel values can be generated. In addition, the intensity of the high / low output can be adaptively controlled by analyzing the image (saturation, edge).

[0026] Compared to IPS panels, VA panels can have inferior viewing angles. IPS offers superior viewing angles, while VA panels have narrow viewing angles. Therefore, viewing VA panels from the sides, above, or below can result in poor color expression and poor image quality. While physical domain division of the display compensates for this viewing angle, it has limitations. To improve the narrow viewing angle of VA panels, multi-domain liquid crystal arrays are used. However, viewing angles are still limited, and there's a trade-off: more domains mean lower transmittance. Existing technologies that utilize separate high- and low-grayscale LUTs have memory limitations. By leveraging the superior viewing angles of low-grayscale and high-grayscale gamma, viewing angles can be improved by dividing the luminance of a single pixel into high-grayscale and low-grayscale modes. At this time, High / Low LUTs may be required respectively. In order to control the exact compensation degree adaptively depending on the input image in the fixed High / Low LUT, separate memory may be required. Therefore, a method to save additional memory or complex logic is needed. A method that can be used in an integrated manner without using High / Low LUTs can save memory. The degree of High / Low can be set by the user, and the intensity can also be easily adjusted according to the degree of saturation and edge.

[0027] Referring to FIG. 1, a display driving method according to embodiments may include a method of setting High and Low without a High / Low LUT.

[0028] For example, to generate a specific luminance, the gray values are determined by setting Low / High values at equal intervals on the luminance axis. Therefore, the values corresponding to Low / High can be found in a single LUT. The intensity of Low / High values can be set according to embodiments.

[0029] Specifically, the display driving method according to the embodiments of S100 measures luminance. The luminance of the panel is measured. The measured luminance value of the panel can be received. The measured luminance value is gray (X-axis component), as shown in Fig. 1, and can be expressed by luminance (Y-axis component).

[0030] S101, a display driving method according to embodiments calculates a look-up table (LUT). For example, a measured luminance value is normalized and the value is corrected to generate a look-up table (LUT). Here, the LUT calculation operation can be performed by software.

[0031] S102, a display driving method according to embodiments calculates an INDEX. Using the generated LUT value, an index operation is performed to calculate low / high gray values according to the target luminance. Here, the index operation can be performed in hardware.

[0032] Referring to Figure 1, the LUT calculation unit receives the measured luminance of the panel, normalizes it, and compensates the value to generate an LUT. The index calculation unit calculates the H / L gray for the target luminance through index calculation based on the LUT. Herein, H pixel data and L pixel data are calculated. Hereinafter, a detailed description will be provided with reference to each drawing.

[0033] Figure 2 shows a luminance measurement and LUT calculation method according to embodiments.

[0034] Fig. 2 illustrates in detail the luminance measurement and LUT calculation process of Fig. 1. The luminance measurement and LUT calculation method of the display driving method according to the embodiments can measure luminance in full grayscale, remove luminance inversion (i.e., remove a section where inversion occurs in the measured data), and perform data smoothing compensation.

[0035] Specifically, in S201, a display driving device according to embodiments receives luminance measurement data. In S202, a display driving device according to embodiments corrects the data. For example, the data is corrected by removing luminance inversion and applying data smoothing. In S203, a display driving device according to embodiments performs data normalization. For example, a LUT is generated through normalization or extension. The generated LUT may be referred to as a first LUT or a target LUT. An inverse LUT of the LUT is additionally generated. The inverse LUT may be referred to as a second LUT or an inverse target LUT.

[0036] Referring to FIG. 2, the display driving method according to the embodiments can measure luminance at all grayscales and determine a gamma 2.2 target based on the corresponding target maximum value (Target max). Based on this, each target can be obtained and LUT calculation can be performed. In addition, LUT correction can be performed to calculate inversion and graph break points. If such target calculation is expressed as a formula, it is as follows: Target[i] = Target max * (i / 255)^2.2.

[0037] Figure 3 illustrates a target index calculation method according to embodiments.

[0038] FIG. 3 illustrates in detail a target index calculation method of the display driving method of FIG. 1. The display driving device according to the embodiments determines H / L at an arbitrary X gray (target X gray). That is, as described in FIG. 2, Y for X can be extracted from the generated target LUT. This process can be expressed as a formula, f(X)=Y. The display driving device according to the embodiments determines H / L according to the VWC Level at the Y value. H(high) is the a component of FIG. 3, and L(low) is the b component of FIG. 3. This can be expressed as a formula, a=Y+VWC level, b=Y-VWC level. That is, the display driving device can measure luminance data from an actual panel, correct and normalize accurate luminance data, generate a LUT and inverse LUT based on the measured value, and determine high and low grayscales through index calculation. The display driving device according to the embodiments determines a gray value from the calculated a and b components. Specifically, the “ㄱ” and “ㄴ” components for the a and b components are extracted from the inverse LUT. This can be expressed as a formula, L -1 (a)= ㄱ (Gray for High), L -1 (b)= ㄴ (Gray for Low)

[0039] Figures 4a and 4b illustrate a method for determining a VWC level according to embodiments.

[0040] Figures 4a and b illustrate in detail the method for determining the VWC level described in Figure 3.

[0041] Referring to Figs. 4a and b, the VWC level is determined based on the minimum value of the panel gamma luminance for each gray. For example, VWC Level Max = Minimum Value (Min (a, b)). Based on the minimum value, an inflection point of the curve occurs as shown in Fig. 4.

[0042] The X-axis of the graphs in Figures 4a and b is Gray (RGB Data), and the Y-axis is the luminance value.

[0043] The maximum value of panel luminance is calculated as VWC Level Max = Minimum Value (Min (a, b)).

[0044] At this time, a roll-off point is set to generate a non-linear curve, and the roll-off point is set to ±Gray based on the inflection point. That is, the roll-off application range is from the inflection point - Gray position to the inflection point + Gray position, where ±Gray can be set as a parameter. The non-linear curve has a symmetrical shape from the inflection point. The VWC roll-off setting formula according to the embodiments is as follows:

[0045] VWC Roll Off=Offset+VWC level Diff *

[0046] The intensity of VWC (VWC level) can be adjusted by saturation, edge, input gray, etc. For example, a relationship such as VWC level 1 > VWC level 2 can be established. The method for setting the intensity of VWC (VWC level) can be expressed as a formula as follows:

[0047] VWC level =VWC Gain * Saturation Gain * Edge Gain * VWC Roll off

[0048] The definition / function of the variables of the above method according to the embodiments is as follows.

[0049] Roll Off (VWC Roll Off): The reason Roll Off was added is to smooth out the Sharp Point (i.e., when there is a gradient in the panel, the Sharp Point must be removed because it causes artifacts).

[0050] Offset: The Y-axis value corresponding to the roll-off start gray ( ).

[0051] Level Difference (VWC level Diff): The Y-axis interval in which Roll Off is applied.

[0052] Input Gray ( ): RGB data coming into each pixel of the panel.

[0053] Roll Off Start Gray ( ): The X-axis value of the starting point where Roll Off is applied.

[0054] Roll Off Width ( ): The X-axis interval of the section where Roll Off is applied.

[0055] Roll-off weight (_): A value that controls the strength of the curve at the sharp point.

[0056] Referring to Fig. 4b, the panel measurement value (target Lv, 400) and Min(a,b) (minimum value between variables a and b (401)) distribution are shown.

[0057] The maximum value for the panel measurement can be determined as follows:

[0058] TargetLv_L_max =Target Lv - min(a,b)

[0059] Around the inflection point, the roll-off can be calculated as follows:

[0060] VWC Roll Off =Offset+VWC level Diff *

[0061] The VWC Level cannot be set higher than the Minimum Value for each Gray calculated previously.

[0062] The display driving method according to the embodiments can generate VWC levels (intensities) at equal intervals.

[0063] Referring to FIGS. 4a and b, in order to generate the same level for high-grayscale output and the same level for low-grayscale output, VWC (equal interval) levels can be generated based on the VWC gain, saturation gain, edge gain, VWC roll-off value for reflecting the inflection point, etc., as in the above-described formula.

[0064] In the VWC level determination method, the definition / function of each parameter is as follows.

[0065] Gain (VWC Gain): This is the value that determines how much of a difference there will be between the high and low grayscale values.

[0066] Saturation Gain: This is a value that indicates the degree of saturation, as it has a function to adjust the VWC intensity according to the saturation of each pixel.

[0067] Edge Gain: This is a value that indicates the degree of the edge, as it has a function to adjust the VWC intensity according to the degree of the edge of each pixel. (VWC intensity: degree of difference between High / Low).

[0068] The minimum parameters used for level calculation are VWC Gain (High / Low intensity control) and VWC Roll Off (necessary to avoid Sharp Point artifacts). Saturation and Edge Gain can be implemented as On / Off and may be optional depending on the embodiment.

[0069] Figure 5 shows a method for determining a VWC level according to embodiments.

[0070] To further explain FIG. 4, referring to FIG. 5, embodiments can determine the VWC level in FIG. 4, calculate high and low gray levels through the determined level, and determine gray values for each of the high and low gray levels through LUT as in FIG. 5.

[0071] For example, assuming VWC level 1 and VWC level 2, if the embodiments calculate level 1 through the above-described process, level 1 is applied at equal intervals to calculate h1, which is a gray value for high grayscale H1. Similarly, gray value l1 for low grayscale L1 is calculated. Similarly, if level 2 is calculated, level 2 is applied at equal intervals to calculate h2, a gray value for high grayscale H2, and gray value l2 for low grayscale L2 can be efficiently calculated. In this way, the display panel output intensity can be adaptively controlled without a complex system design or operation using one target LUT at equal intervals without a memory burden.

[0072] Figure 6 shows the effect of a display driving method according to embodiments.

[0073] Figure 6 shows in detail the effect of the display driving method described in Figures 1 to 5.

[0074] Referring to Figure 6, a graph comparing the gamma components of the front of the display with and without VWC according to embodiments is shown. Figure 6 shows a comparison of display panel screens with and without VWC. When viewed from the side, the display colors appear more vivid when VWC is applied.

[0075] Fig. 7 shows a display driving device according to embodiments.

[0076] Fig. 7 corresponds to the display driving device of Fig. 1. The LUT calculation unit (100) of the display driving device of Fig. 8 may include a Boundary Edge Preservation (BEP) unit, an Adaptive Saturation Gain (ASG) unit, and / or an Edge Pattern Preservation (EPP) unit. The H / L index calculation unit (101) calculates high and low grayscales through the above-described operation. The H / L DGA is Degamma and calculates high and low grayscales for the gamma component through the VWC level as in Figs. 4-5.

[0077] Figure 8 shows a display driving method according to embodiments.

[0078] Figure 8 shows the display driving method described in Figure 1, etc.

[0079] S800, a display driving method according to embodiments may include a step of measuring the luminance of a panel. The luminance measurement operation follows the description in FIG. 1 and the like.

[0080] S801, the display driving method according to the embodiments may further include a step of calculating an LUT. The LUT calculation operation follows the description of FIGS. 1 and 2, etc.

[0081] S802, the display driving method according to the embodiments may further include a step of calculating Low / High Gray values according to the target luminance based on an index operation. The Gray value calculation operation follows the description of FIGS. 3 to 5, etc.

[0082] Referring to FIGS. 1 and 8, a display driving method may include a step of measuring the luminance of a panel; a step of calculating a look up table (LUT) based on the measured luminance; and a step of calculating low gray and high gray values for a target luminance based on the LUT.

[0083] Referring to Figure 1, in relation to panel luminance measurement, the step of measuring the luminance of the panel is:

[0084] Luminance can be measured based on gray and luminance from the panel.

[0085] Referring to FIG. 2, with respect to LUT calculation, the step of calculating the LUT (Look Up Table) includes the step of removing an inverse section from the measured luminance, the step of applying smoothing to the luminance, and the step of normalizing the luminance, and based on the luminance, a first LUT and a second LUT are generated, and the second LUT may be an inverse of the first LUT. Since generating and utilizing LUTs requires memory usage, a method of generating and operating a minimum number of LUTs contributes to efficient memory usage and system design complexity / cost effectiveness.

[0086] Referring to FIG. 3, in relation to the target index operation, the step of calculating low gray and high gray values includes extracting luminance for a specific gray value based on a first LUT calculated based on measured luminance, calculating a high gray value for a value obtained by adding a level to the luminance from a second LUT which is an inverse of the first LUT, and calculating a low gray value for a value obtained by subtracting a level from the luminance from the second LUT which is an inverse of the first LUT, and the level related to the high gray value and the level related to the low gray value may be the same.

[0087] Referring to Fig. 4, with respect to VWC level determination, the level is generated based on the minimum value of the luminance of each gray-star panel gamma.

[0088] Referring to Figure 4, regarding the curve inflection point Roll off, the luminance value for gray is adjusted based on the offset for the section having the inflection point. The term Roll off is interpreted to mean adjusting the steep fluctuation section at the inflection point into a smooth curve shape.

[0089] A display driving method is performed by a display driving device. Referring to FIG. 1, the display driving device includes a measuring unit for measuring the luminance of a panel; a first calculating unit for calculating an LUT (Look Up Table) based on the measured luminance; and a second calculating unit for calculating low gray and high gray values for a target luminance based on the LUT. The measuring unit measures the luminance based on gray and luminance from the panel. The first calculating unit removes an inverse section from the measured luminance, applies smoothing to the luminance, normalizes the luminance, and based on the luminance, a first LUT and a second LUT are generated, and the second LUT is an inverse of the first LUT.

[0090] The second operation unit extracts luminance for a specific gray value based on the first LUT calculated based on the measured luminance, calculates a high-gray gray value for a value obtained by adding a level to the luminance from a second LUT which is an inverse of the first LUT, and calculates a low-gray gray value for a value obtained by subtracting a level from the luminance from the second LUT which is an inverse of the first LUT, and the level related to the high-gray gray value and the level related to the low-gray gray value are the same. The level is generated based on the minimum value of the luminance of the panel gamma for each gray (for a specific level calculation method, refer to the method (formula) described above).

[0091] The luminance value for gray is adjusted based on the offset for the section where the inflection point is present. The value for roll-off refers to the method (formula) described above.

[0092] Referring to FIG. 1, with respect to the LUT calculation unit processor, the system includes a memory; and a processor connected to the memory; wherein the processor measures the luminance of the panel, calculates an LUT (Look Up Table) based on the measured luminance, and based on the LUT, low gray and high gray values for the target luminance are calculated. In one embodiment, the display device may include the panel and the system. For example, the panel may be an LCD panel, and may also be a VA panel.

[0093] A processor measures luminance from a panel based on gray and luminance. The processor removes an inverse section from the measured luminance, applies smoothing to the luminance, normalizes the luminance, and generates a first look-up table (LUT) and a second look-up table (LUT) based on the luminance, wherein the second LUT is an inverse of the first LUT. The processor extracts luminance for a specific gray value based on the first LUT calculated based on the measured luminance, calculates a high-tonal gray value for a value obtained by adding a level to the luminance from the second LUT, which is an inverse of the first LUT, and calculates a low-tonal gray value for a value obtained by subtracting a level from the luminance from the second LUT, which is an inverse of the first LUT, and the levels associated with the high-tonal gray value and the levels associated with the low-tonal gray value are equal to each other. The levels are generated based on the minimum value of the luminance of the panel gamma for each gray. The interval where the luminance value for gray has an inflection point is adjusted based on the offset.

[0094] The embodiments have been described in terms of methods and / or devices, and the descriptions of methods and devices may be applied complementarily.
