Description

[0001] DEVICE FOR DISEASE RESEARCH

[0002] LYME WITH BEDBUGS AND TICKS

[0003] TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0004] The present invention relates to the technical field of engineering, electronics, mechanics, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, epidemiology and entomology, since it provides a device for research into Lyme disease with bedbugs and ticks.

[0005] BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0006] Lyme disease is a bacterial infection transmitted by the bite of infected ticks, mainly Ixodes scapularis in North America and Ixodes ricinus or Ixodes persulcatus in Europe and Asia. The bacteria responsible for the disease are Borrelia burgdorferi in the Americas and Borrelia af zelii and Borrelia garinii in Europe and Asia, respectively.

[0007] The history of Lyme disease dates back to the 1970s in the United States, specifically in the town of Lyme, Connecticut, where an unusual outbreak of arthritis occurred among children. Although the disease existed long before, this outbreak caught the attention of physicians and led to the identification and description of the disease as a specific clinical entity.

[0008] In 1975, physicians Stephen Malawista and Alien Steere, along with colleagues, described an unusual outbreak of juvenile rheumatoid arthritis in children in the Lyme, Connecticut area. The cause of the outbreak was initially unknown. In 1977, Willy Burgdorfer, a researcher at the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, isolated and discovered the spirochete bacterium responsible for the disease, which was later named Borrelia burgdorferi in his honor.

[0009] In 1981 the term "Lyme disease" was coined to describe the tick-borne infection that caused the symptoms seen in Lyme, Connecticut.

[0010] In 1982, the connection between tick bites and the transmission of Lyme disease was conclusively established. Furthermore, the first laboratory tests for diagnosing the disease were developed.

[0011] In 1985, the first effective antibiotics were developed to treat Lyme disease, such as doxycycline and amoxicillin.

[0012] In 1991, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first Lyme disease vaccine, known as LYMErix. However, due to concerns about side effects and low demand, the vaccine was withdrawn from the market in 2002.

[0013] From 1990 to 2000, Lyme disease became one of the most prevalent tick-borne diseases in the United States and parts of Europe, Asia, and other regions.

[0014] As awareness of Lyme disease has increased, efforts have been made to improve diagnostic testing and research into its epidemiology, symptoms, and treatments. There has also been a focus on prevention, public education, and the promotion of safe outdoor practices to reduce the risk of tick bites and the spread of the disease.

[0015] It is important to emphasize that Lyme disease remains a public health concern and continued research is needed to address issues such as early diagnosis, effective treatment, and prevention of this infectious disease.

[0016] To study Lyme disease and conduct related research, scientists and doctors use a variety of equipment and tools. Some of the most common equipment used in the study of Lyme disease include:

[0017] The microscope is a fundamental tool for examining blood, tissue, or cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients for the presence of the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi or its components. It can also be used to study ticks and determine whether they are infected.

[0018] The PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) technique allows the amplification of the DNA of the bacteria present in the samples, facilitating their detection and diagnosis. PCR is especially useful for rapidly identifying the presence of the bacteria in the early stages of the disease.

[0019] The ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay) method is a laboratory technique used to detect specific antibodies against Lyme bacteria in blood samples from patients. It is an initial screening test and can help identify suspected cases for subsequent confirmation. The Western Blot is a more specific test that complements the ELISA and is used to confirm positive results obtained in the previous test. It helps identify specific antibodies against various proteins of the Borrelia burgdorferi bacteria.

[0020] Bacterial culture, although more complicated and time-consuming, is performed from samples from the patient or ticks, but it is a valuable tool to confirm the presence of Borrelia burgdorferi.

[0021] DNA sequencing is used to analyze the genome of the Lyme bacteria and to study the strains present in different geographic areas, which helps to understand the epidemiology and diversity of the disease.

[0022] Medical imaging, such as MRI and CT, are used to examine affected organs and tissues for signs of inflammation or damage.

[0023] Epidemiological studies are essential to study the incidence, prevalence and risk factors of Lyme disease in different populations and geographic regions.

[0024] It is important to mention that research on the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi , which causes Lyme disease , is highly regulated and restricted due to safety and biosecurity concerns . Research involving this bacteria is typically conducted in biosafety level 2 or higher laboratories, which have strict protocols in place to prevent accidental exposure and escape of the bacteria . Some common devices and equipment used in laboratory research to study the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and Lyme disease include:

[0025] • Bacteriological incubators: They are used to cultivate and maintain bacteria under controlled conditions, such as temperature, humidity and CO2 concentration.

[0026] • Shakers and culture shakers: To mix the culture media and keep the bacteria in suspension.

[0027] • Brightfield and darkfield microscopes: To observe the morphology and characteristics of bacteria in culture samples.

[0028] • Centrifuges: To separate and concentrate bacterial cells from samples.

[0029] • Laminar flow hoods and biological safety cabinets: To work safely with the bacteria and minimize exposure.

[0030] • Thermal cyclers: To perform the PCR technique and amplify bacterial DNA.

[0031] • Electrophoresis system: To analyze the results of PCR and other DNA studies.

[0032] • Western blot systems: To analyze specific proteins from the bacteria.

[0033] • Image analysis system: To quantify and analyze the results obtained in the experiments.

[0034] • Laboratory animals: In some cases, animals such as mice are used to study the pathogenesis and immune response to bacterial infection.

[0035] It is worth mentioning that any experimentation with the bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi and Lyme disease must be carried out in accordance with the regulations and ethical guidelines established by scientific institutions and health authorities. Furthermore, animal experimentation must follow animal welfare guidelines and be approved by research ethics committees. The safety and security of researchers and the public are of utmost importance in this field of study.

[0036] A search was conducted for the prior art of devices for researching Lyme disease with bed bugs and ticks, where it was found that different devices have been developed for this purpose, as mentioned in China patent application document number CN106923927 (A), with publication date of July 7, 2017, which has as its title "A KIND OF DISSECTING DEVICE AND DEAD-END METHOD OF APHID PARASITE", which describes a dissecting device and dead-end method of aphid parasite, where 1 upper side end of the workbench of the dissecting device is installed with a longitudinal holding plate, the horizontal holding plate is connected with the above longitudinal holding plate, the lower surface of the horizontal holding plate is provided with a shadowless lamp, the shadowless lamp is connected by an electric power connection line with an external power supply, and the center of the upper surface of the working table below the shadowless lamp provides a precise dissection device; the magnifying glass bearing is located on the top of the working plate, the top of the magnifying glass holder is connected with a universal tube, the end of the universal tube is connected to a magnifying glass, and the dissection of the object is performed with the magnifying glass and the shadowless lamp, the fixation of the object is performed using the circle of double-sided adhesive tape simultaneously.
