Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure provide a solution for control information transmission for reconfigurable intelligent surfaces. In a solution, a communication device initiates an access to a network device via a first path for control information reception and measurement information reporting. The communication device receives, via a second path for data forwarding, a reference signal for measuring at least one beam associated with the second path and transmits, to the network device via the first path, a signal associated with a measurement of the reference signal. The communication device receives, from the network device via the first path, second timing advance information regarding a second timing advance value of the second path; and forwards a data signal via the second path at least based on the second timing advance information.

[0042] In some embodiments, the communication device 120 such as the RIS may be a network node composed of an arrangement of scattering elements called unit-cells, whose properties may be dynamically controlled to change its electromagnetic behavior. The response of the communication device 120 may be controlled dynamically and / or semi-statically through control signaling such as to tune the incident wireless signals through reflection, refraction, focusing, collimation, modulation, absorption or any combination of these. As used herein, “the communication device 120 forwarding a signal or a data transmission” may refer to the communication device 120 reflecting, refracting, backscattering, focusing, collimating, modulating, absorbing the signal or data transmission, or any combination of these. The communication device 120 such as RIS may be considered as the promising enabler to construct the smart propagation with decent progress in research and development.

[0043] The communication device 120 may be implemented using mostly passive components without requiring high-cost active components such as power amplifiers, resulting in low implementation cost and energy consumption. This allows easy and flexible deployment of the communication device 120, with the possibility of the communication device 120 taking any shape and to be integrated onto objects (e.g., walls, buildings, lamp posts, etc. ) . The communication device 120 may have different structures with considerations of cost, form factor, design and integration. The communication device 120 may be implemented with any existing approaches or approaches to be developed, such as metamaterials and meta-surfaces, reflect-arrays or elementary antennas, or the like. Scope of embodiments of the present disclosure is not limited in this respect.

[0044] In some cases, in the communication environment 100A, there may be an obstacle (denoted as a block) such as buildings, mountains, or other structures that prevents or attenuates the transmission of signals, leading to poor or lost communication. In such cases, a plurality of communication devices 110 (not shown) may be deployed, or alternatively the communication device 120 with distributed locations may be deployed  in the communication environment 110A to enhance the communication. Details regarding deploying the plurality of communication devices 120 or the communication device 120 with distributed locations will be described with respect to FIG. 3A to 3C.

[0045] The communication device 120 may include a first module 122 and a second module 124, as shown in FIG. 1B, which illustrates a communication environment 110B. As illustrated in FIG. 1B, the communication environment 110B includes the UE 110, the network device 130 and the communication device 120 which includes the first module 122 and the second module 124. As used herein, the communication link between the network device 130 and the first module 122 of the communication device 120 is referred to a “control link” or a “first path” , the communication link between the network device 130 and the second module 124 of the communication device 120 is referred to a “backhaul link” or “second path” , and the communication link between the UE 110 and the second module 124 of the communication device 120 is referred to an “access link” or “third path” .

[0046] As illustrated in FIG. 1B, the UE 110 and the communication device 120 may communicate via the access link. Furthermore, the network device 130 and the communication device 120 may communicate via the control link and the backhaul link. Thus, the UE 110 and the network device 130 may communicate via the communication device 120.

[0047] In some embodiments, the control link may be used to transmit control information, from the network device 130 to the communication device 120, or transmit other information such as a measurement report from the communication device 120 to the network device 130. The backhaul link may be used to transmit a data signal or reference signal, from the network device 130 to the communication device 120. In addition, between the UE 110 and the communication device 120, the access link may be used to transmit the data signal.

[0048] The communications in the communication environments 100A and 100B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like. The embodiments of the present  disclosure may be performed according to any generation communication protocols either currently known or to be developed in the future. Examples of the communication protocols include, but not limited to, the first generation (1G) , the second generation (2G) , 2.5G, 2.75G, the third generation (3G) , the fourth generation (4G) , 4.5G, the fifth generation (5G) communication protocols, 5.5G, 5G-Advanced networks, or the sixth generation (6G) networks.

[0049] In some example embodiments, a link from a network device 130 to the UE 110 is referred to as a downlink (DL) , while a link from the UE 110 to a network device 130 is referred to as an uplink (UL) . In DL, the network device 130 is a transmitting (TX) device (or a transmitter) and the UE 110 is a receiving (RX) device (or a receiver) . In UL, the UE 110 is a TX device (or a transmitter) and the network device 130 is a RX device (or a receiver) .

[0050] In the following, for the purpose of illustration, some example embodiments are described with the UE 110 operating as a UE, the network device 120 operating as a base station and the communication device 120 operating as an RIS. However, in some example embodiments, operations described in connection with a UE may be implemented at a network device or other device, operations described in connection with a network device may be implemented at a terminal device or other device, and operations described in connection with an RIS may be implemented at a network node or other device.

[0051] It is to be understood that the number of devices and their connections in FIG. 1A and FIG. 1B are given for the purpose of illustration without suggesting any limitations to the present disclosure. The communication environments 100A and 100B may include any suitable number of devices adapted for implementing embodiments of the present disclosure. For example, there may be more UEs and / or network devices and / or communication devices in the communication environments 100A and 100B. Although not shown, the communication environments 100A and 100B may involve a core network with core network devices for supporting the communications.

[0052] The communication environment 110B includes the UE 110, the communication device 120, the network device 130, and the first module 122 and the second module 124 of the communication device 120. Moreover, the communication between the network device 130 and the first module 122 of the communication device 120 is referred to the control link, the communication between the network device 130 and the second module  124 of the communication device 120 is referred to the backhaul link, and the communication between the UE 110 and the second module 124 of the communication device 120 is referred to the access link.

[0053] As illustrated in FIG. 1B, the UE 110 and the communication device 120 may communicate via the access link. Furthermore, the network device 130 and the communication device 120 may communicate via the control link and the backhaul link. Thus, the UE 110 and the network device 130 may communicate via the communication device 120.

[0054] In some embodiments, the control link may be used to transmit control information, from the network device 130 to the communication device 120, including a signal associated with a measurement of a reference signal and a timing advance information. The backhaul link may be used to transmit the reference signal, from the network device 130 to the communication device 120. Moreover, the backhaul link may be used to transmit data signal. In addition, between the UE 110 and the communication device 120, the access link may be used to transmit the data signal. The data signal means the signal transmitted between the UE 110 and the network device 120.

[0055] The communications in the communication environments 100A and 100B may conform to any suitable standards including, but not limited to, Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) , Long Term Evolution (LTE) , LTE-Evolution, LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) , New Radio (NR) , Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA) , Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) , GSM EDGE Radio Access Network (GERAN) , Machine Type Communication (MTC) and the like.

[0056] Reference is made to FIG. 2, which illustrates a signaling flow 200 of a procedure of control information transmission for RIS in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 2, the signaling flow 200 involves a communication device 210 and a network device 220.

[0057] In some embodiments, the communication device 210 may be implemented as the communication device 120 in FIGS. 1A and 1B, such as an RIS. The network device 230 may be implemented as a gNB or any other device that may access to network services, including the network device 130 in FIGS. 1A and 1B.

[0058] In the following descriptions, while operations are depicted in a particular order, this should not be understood as requiring that such operations be performed in the particular order shown or in sequential order, or that all illustrated operations be performed, to achieve desirable results. In certain circumstances, multitasking and parallel processing may be advantageous. Likewise, while several specific implementation details are contained in the above discussions, these should not be construed as limitations on the scope of the present disclosure, but rather as descriptions of features that may be specific to particular embodiments. Certain features that are described in the context of separate embodiments may also be implemented in combination in a single embodiment. Conversely, various features that are described in the context of a single embodiment may also be implemented in multiple embodiments separately or in any suitable sub-combination.

[0059] In the signaling flow 200, the communication device 210 initiates (2010) an access to the network device 220 via a first path for control information reception and measurement information reporting. Then the network device 220 transmits (2020) a reference signal for measuring one or more beam associated with a second path of the communication device 210, the second path being for data signal forwarding after beam training. Correspondingly, the communication device 210 receives (2030) , via the second path, a reference signal for measuring the one or more beams associated with the second path. In some implementations, the first path may be implemented as the control link in FIGS. 1B. Moreover, the second path may be implemented as the backhaul link in FIGS. 1B. As used herein, measuring a beam may refer to measuring a channel associated with the beam. The beam used herein may refer to a spatial filter.

[0060] Further, the communication device 210 transmits (2040) to the network device 220 via the first path, a signal associated with a measurement of the reference signal. Correspondingly, the network device 220 receives (2050) , from the communication device 210 via the first path, the signal.

[0061] Moreover, the network device 220 determines (2060) second timing advance  information regarding a second timing advance value of the second path based on the signal. Additionally, a first timing advance value of the first path is different from the second timing advance value. In addition, the network device 220 transmits (2070) to the communication device 210 via the first path, the second timing advance information. Correspondingly, the communication device 210 receives (2080) , from the network device 220 via the first path, the second timing advance information. Based on the second timing advance information, the communication device 210 forwards (2090) a data signal via the second path. For example, the communication device 210 may forward (2090) the data signal from a terminal device such as the UE 110 or another communication device such as another RIS, to a network device 130 or another communication device. Embodiments in which a communication device or RIS forwards the data signal to another communication device or RIS may be referred to as a “multiple-hop” data signal forwarding or a “multiple-hop” RIS forwarding scenario. Details regarding multiple hop forwarding will be described with respect to FIG. 3A and FIG. 4.

[0062] As mentioned, the first path and the second path may be used for transmission to or from the communication device 120. In some embodiments, the communication device 210 may include a first module for control information reception and measurement information reporting via the first path at a first frequency and a second module for data forwarding via the second path at a second frequency. The second frequency may be higher than the first frequency. By way of example, the first module may be implemented as the first module 122 in FIGS. 1B, and the second module may be implemented as the second module 124 in FIGS. 1B. By using a separate module with a higher frequency for data forwarding, the data forwarding performance can be enhanced.

[0063] Furthermore, the second module may receive the data signal from a further communication device or the network device 220 via the second path. Additionally, the second module may forward the data signal to a terminal device or another communication device (such as, another RIS) . In these cases, the terminal device may be implemented as the UE 110 in the FIGS. 1A and 1B.

[0064] In some embodiments, the first module and the second module may be deployed together or integrated as a single device. A plurality of communication devices or RISs may be deployed to enhance the network coverage. With these RISs, a multiple hop data forwarding may be achieved. That is, a first RIS may receive data (also referred to as data  signal or signal” from the network device 220, and forward the data to a second RIS, which may be referred to as a “first hop” . The second RIS may forward the data to a terminal device or to a third RIS, which may be referred to as a “second hop” . The second RIS may also receive a signal from the third RIS and forward the signal to the first RIS. The first RIS may then forward the signal to the network device 220. There may be two or more hops for the data forwarding. For the purpose of illustration, some embodiments will be described with the two-hop data forwarding as an example. It is to be understood that embodiments described with respect to the two-hop data forwarding will be applied for other multiple hop data forwarding in a similar way.

[0065] FIG. 3A illustrates a schematic diagram of example communication architecture 300A in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As shown in FIG. 3A, the communication architecture 300A involves a UE B 310, a UE A 312, a RIS B 320, a RIS A 330, a gNB 340. Moreover, the communication architecture 300A may also involve a block between the RIS A 330 and the UE B 310 and a block between the gNB 340 and the RIS B 320 and UE A 312. That is, the communication between the RIS A 330 and the UE B 310 and the communication between the gNB 340 and the RIS B 320 may be poor or lost. Furthermore, the direct communication between the gNB 340 and the RIS B 320 is denoted as link-1, or the first path, the indirect communication between the gNB 340 and the RIS B 320 is denoted as link-2, or the second path, which include link-2-1 between the gNB 340 and the RIS A 330, and link-2-2 between the RIS A330 and the RIS B 320.

[0066] In some implementations, the RIS A 330 and the RIS B 320 may be implementations of the communication device 210 in FIG. 2 and the communication device 120 in FIGS. 1A and 1B. Similarly, the gNB 340 may be an implementation of the network device 130 in FIGS. 1A and 1B and the network device 220 in FIG. 2. The UE A 312 and the UE B 310 may be implementations of the UE 110 in FIGS. 1A and 1B.

[0067] As illustrated, the UE A 312 may be connected to the gNB 340 via the RIS A 330, since the communication between the UE A 312 and the gNB 340 is blocked. The UE B 310 may be connected to the gNB 340 via the RIS A 330 and the RIS B 320, since the connection between the UE B 310 and the gNB340 or RIS A is blocked. Alternatively, the UE B 310 may be connected to the gNB 340 via the RIS A 330 and the RIS B 320, since the range between the UE B 310 and the gNB 340 or the RIS A 330 is too far to  detect the communication signal.

[0068] In some embodiments, the RIS A 330 may be a forwarding node including amplify module. Further, the RIS A 330 may be considered as the first hop. Additionally, the RIS B 320 may be a forwarding node including amplify module. Similarly, the RIS B 320 may be considered as the second hop.

[0069] In some implementations, the link-1 may be a direct line of sight (LOS) or non-line of sight (NLOS) . Similarly, the link-2-1 and the link-2-2 may be LOS or NLOS. The communication between the gNB 340 and the UE B 310 may include the RIS A 330 and RIS B 320 as intermediate nodes. In addition, the communication between the gNB 340 and the first module of RIS B 320 may also include RIS A as an intermediate node.

[0070] In this case, the communication between the UE and the gNB with obstacle blocking the connection between the UE and the gNB can utilize RIS with multiple hops. Thus, the communication between the UE and the gNB is improved. With the communication architecture 300A, a multiple hop data forwarding will be achieved. The control information transmission and timing advance adjustment for the multiple hop data forwarding cases will be described with respect to FIG. 4.

[0071] Some example embodiments regarding the multiple hop data forwarding with a plurality of RISs have been described. Referring back to FIG. 2, alternatively, in some embodiments, the first module and the second module of the communication device 210 may be with distributed locations. As used herein, the communication device 210 with distributed locations may refer to that two modules of the communication device 210 are located separately. As an example, the distance between the first module and the second module may be larger than a threshold distance. As another example, the first module and the second module may be deployed at a same location, but with individual panels. A receiving / transmitting direction of the panel of the first module is different from a receiving / transmitting direction of the panel of the second module. FIG. 3B illustrates example communication architecture 300B which includes an RIS with distributed locations.

[0072] As depicted, the communication architecture 300B involves a UE 310, a RIS part B 324, a RIS part A 322, a gNB 342. Moreover, the communication architecture 300B may also involve a block between the gNB 342 and the UE 314. That is, the  communication between the gNB 342 and the UE 314 may be poor or lost. The communication between the gNB and the UE is enhanced via the RIS part B 324, based on the received signal on RIS part A 322 from gNB 342. The links / paths for the RIS part A and RIS part B connected with gNB 342 may be different. Furthermore, the RIS part A 322 and the RIS part B 324 may be connected directly.

[0073] In some implementations, the RIS part A 322 may be implementations of the first module 122 and the RIS part B 324 may be implementations of the second module 124 in FIG. 2. Further, the communication between the RIS part A 322 and the gNB 342 may be referred to the control link, the communication between the RIS part B 324 and the gNB 342 may be referred to the backhaul link, and the communication between the RIS part B 324 and the UE 312 may be referred to the access link in FIG. 1B.

[0074] In the embodiment of FIG. 3B, the RIS includes the RIS part A 322 and the RIS part B 324. Further, the RIS communicates with the gNB 342 via the RIS part A 322, and the RIS performs transmission (s) with the UE 314 via the RIS part B 324. The RIS part A 322 may be implemented as a control entity of the RIS, and the RIS part B 324 may be implemented as a forwarding entity of the RIS. Furthermore, the control entity and the forwarding entity may be distributed. In these cases, the transmission path for control entity and forwarding entity are different, which leads to different transmission delay.

[0075] In such case, the control link between the RIS and the gNB and the access link between the RIS and the UE are different. Different TA values may be configured for different links. The stability and reliability of the communication between the gNB and the UE is improved via the RIS.

[0076] Still refers to FIG. 2, alternatively, or in addition, in some other embodiments, the first module may be a common module for a plurality of communication devices 210, and each of the plurality of communication devices 210 includes a respective second module. FIG. 3C illustrates example communication architecture 300C in which a plurality of RISs with a common first module and a plurality of second modules.

[0077] As shown in FIG. 3C, the communication architecture 300C involves a RIS part A 326, a gNB 344, and multiple RIS part B 328-1 to 328-5. For the purpose of discussion, the multiple RIS part B 328-1 to 328-5 are collectively or individually referred to as the RIS part B 328. Furthermore, the RIS part A 326 may be connected to each of the multiple  RIS part B 328.

[0078] In some implementations, the RIS part A 326 may be implementations of the first module 122 and the multiple RIS part B 328 may be implementations of the second module 124 in FIG. 2. Further, the communication link between the RIS part A 326 and the gNB 344 may be referred to the control link, and the transmission link between the multiple RIS part B 328 and the gNB 344 may be referred to as multiple backhaul links.

[0079] In the embodiment of FIG. 3C, the RIS part A 326 may be a common control entity and the multiple RIS part B may be forwarding entities. As illustrated, the transmission path between different RIS part B 328 and the gNB 344 may be different. In this way, multiple forwarding entity of RIS can be controlled by a single control entity. Thus, the flexibility and utility of the RIS is improved.

[0080] Referring back to FIG. 2, as mentioned, the second timing advance value different from the first timing advance value for the first path may be configured for the second path of the communication device 210. In some embodiments, the network device 220 may also configure at least one beam associated with the second path for the communication device 210. By way of example, the communication device 210 may receive, from the network device 220 via the first path, a first beam information including a configuration of a set of beams for receiving the reference signal. The configuration may alternatively include information regarding at least one beam for transmitting the reference signal to the communication device 210. The communication device 210 may determine the set of beams for receiving the reference signal based on the configuration.

[0081] Furthermore, the communication device 210 may receive, via the second path, the reference signal based on the first beam information such as the configured set of beams. Additionally, the communication device 210 may obtain measurements related to the set of beams based on the reference signal. In addition, the communication device 210 may transmit, to the network device 220 via the first path, a report of the measurements including the signal associated with the measurement of the reference signal. Moreover, the communication device 210 may receive, from the network device 220 via the first path, a configuration of a beam for receiving the data signal via the second path.

[0082] In those multiple hop cases, the communication device 210 may be a communication device in the second hop, and the reference signal may be transmitted to  the communication device 210 via a further communication device such as an RIS in a first hop. The network device 220 may transmit, to the further communication device via a further first path, a configuration of a first set of beams for signal forwarding of the further communication device. Moreover, the network device 220 may transmit, to the communication device 210 via the first path, a configuration of a second set of beams for receiving the reference signal. In some embodiments, the configuration may include at least one access beam of RIS in a first hop for forwarding the reference signal to the communication device, then the communication device 210 determines the second set of beams based on the configuration. Further, the network device 220 may transmit, to the further communication device via the further second path, the reference signal. The further communication device forwards the reference signal to the communication device based on the first set of beams, and the communication device 210 receives the reference signal based on the second set of beams.

[0083] Additionally, the network device 220 may receive, from the communication device 210 via the first path, a report of measurements of the second set of beams, the measurements being performed based on the first beam information. Moreover, the network device 220 may determine second beam information including a first beam for transmitting a data signal from the further communication device to the communication device via part of the second path (link-2-2) and a second beam for receiving the data signal from the further communication device to the communication device 210 via part of the second path (link-2-2) . In addition, the network device 220 may transmit a configuration of the first beam to the further communication device via the further first path. Furthermore, the network device 220 may transmit a configuration of the second beam to the communication device 210 via the first path to the communication device 210.

[0084] In some implementations, the signal associated with the measurement of the reference signal may include an indication indicative of the at least one measurement for the second path, and / or a time difference between a receiving time of a transmission via the second path and a receiving time of a transmission via the first path. Furthermore, the second timing advance information is based on the signal.

[0085] Furthermore, the signal associated with a measurement of the reference signal may include at least one of a physical random access channel (PRACH) signal, a sounding reference signal (SRS) , or a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH) signal. Additionally,  the signal may be associated with a second identifier of the communication device 210 for a second module of the communication device 210. The second module is associated with the second path. For example, the second module connects with a further device such as an RIS or a terminal device via the second path. The second identifier may be different from a first identifier of the communication device 210 for a first module of the communication device 210. The first module is associated with the first path. For example, the first module connects with a further device such as the network device 220 via the first path. The second identifier for the second module may be associated with the first identifier for the first module.

[0086] In addition, the communication 210 may determine to transmit the RPACH signal or the SRS based on a comparison between a cyclic prefix (CP) length and a time difference between a receiving time of a transmission via the second path and a receiving time of a transmission via the first path, or whether the second timing advance information regarding the second timing advance value has been received. For example, if the time difference is larger than the CP length, the PRACH may be used. Otherwise, if the time difference is less than the CP length, the SRS may be used. As another example, if the second timing advance information has not been received, that is, an initial timing advance information for the second path, PRACH may be used, and for updating or adjusting the second timing advance information, SRS may be used.

[0087] Moreover, the signal may include the PRACH signal, and an offset between an applied timing advance value for the first path and an indicated timing advance value for the first path is a time difference measured between the first path and the second path by the communication device 210.

[0088] In some implementations, the communication device 210 may transmit the signal associated with the measurement of the reference signal based on a receiving time of a transmission via the second path, a time difference between a receiving time of a transmission via the second path and a receiving time of a transmission via the first path, or a comparison between the time difference and a threshold time difference. For example, if the detected time difference is larger than the threshold time difference such as a predefined value, the communication device 210 may report the signal associated with the measurement report.

[0089] In some embodiments, the second timing advance information may include at  least one of: the first timing advance value of the first path and the second timing advance value for the second path, the first timing advance value for the first path and at least one offset value between the first timing advance value and the second timing advance value, a timing advance value with a flag indicative of a respective path, an initial timing advance value for the first path, or an updated timing advance value for the second path.

[0090] Furthermore, the first timing advance value may be associated with a first identifier of the communication device 210 for the first module, and the second timing advance value may be associated with a second identifier of the communication device 210 for the second module.

[0091] In addition, the at least one offset value may include a first value for adjusting a range for the second timing advance value, and / or a second value for adjusting the second timing advance value in the adjusted range.

[0092] Additionally, the communication device 210 may receive, from the network device 220 via the first path, hop information of the communication device 210. Specifically, the hop information may include at least one of: a hop order of the communication device 210 among a plurality of communication devices in a data transmission procedure from the network device 220, a hop type of the communication device 210, the hop type indicating whether the communication device 210 receives a data transmission via a further communication device from the network device and / or forwards a data transmission to a further communication device, an identifier of the communication device 210, a further identifier of a further communication device associated with the communication device 210, a direction or location of the communication device 210, or a further direction or location of a further communication device associated with the communication device 210. The direction or location of the parent node and / or the child node may be indicated if the node is stable. The hop information may be transmitted via radio resource control (RRC) message or operation, administration and maintenance (OAM) .

[0093] In an example, the hop order may be such as 0, 1, 2, ... or 1, 2, 3, ... If the hop order is one from {0, 1, 2, ... } , the hop order “0” may refer to the first communication device which receives the data signal from the network device 220 directly and forwards the data signal to a second communication device with a hop order “1” . The second communication device may forward the data signal to a third communication device with  the hop order “2” . Likewise, if the hop order is one from {1, 2, 3, ... } , the hop order “1” may refer to the first communication device which receives the data signal from the network device 220 directly and forwards the data signal to a second communication device with a hop order “2” . The second communication device may forward the data signal to a third communication device with the hop order “3” .

[0094] As used herein, the hop type may be one of a “parent node” , a “child node” or a “both parent node and child node” . The parent node may receive data signal from the network device 220 or its parent node and forward the data signal to its child node. The child node may receive the data signal from its parent node and forward the data signal to a terminal device or to its child node. The both parent node and child node may receive the data signal from its parent node and forward the data signal to its child node.

[0095] An example of the indication indicating the hop order, the hop type, direction and location, indication channel, and the range of the value of the indication is shown in Table 1. In Table 1, the parameter HopOrder indicates the hop order and the parameter HopType indicates the hop type. It is to be understood that the parameters and values in Table 1 are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable parameter or value may be applied.

[0096] Table 1

[0097] In some implementations, the communication device 210 may receive, from the network device 220 via the first path, beam information of the communication device.  Specifically, the beam information may include at least one of: at least one beam for an entity associated with the first path, at least one beam for an entity associated with the second path, at least one beam for forwarding the data signal to a terminal device or a further communication device, or respective time resource information of beams of the communication device. The beam information may be transmitted via RRC message or MAC-CE or OAM.

[0098] Furthermore, the communication device 210 may receive, from the network device 220 via the first path, time resource information including a first time resource transection via the first path and a second time resource transection via the second path. In case of the transmission delay of the second path is larger than the transmission delay of the first path, specifically, the first time resource may be later than the second time resource and a length of an overlapped part of the first time resource and the second time resource may be less than a time delay difference between the first path and the second path. Alternatively, the first time resource may be earlier than the second time resource and a time gap between the first time resource and the second time resource may be larger than the time delay difference between the first path and the second path.

[0099] In case of the transmission delay of the second path is smaller than the transmission delay of the first path, specifically, the first time resource may be later than the second time resource and a time gap between the first time resource and the second time resource may be larger than the time delay difference between the first path and the second path Alternatively, the first time resource may be earlier than the second time resource and a length of an overlapped part of the first time resource and the second time resource may be less than a time delay difference between the first path and the second path.

[0100] An example of the time resource information is shown in Table 2. With such time resource information, the time duration range for aperiodic access beam indication may be increased based on the value set defined for the communication device with single hop, as the Mmax of the durationInSymbols-r18 is increased to 56 or 112, instead of 28.

[0101] Table 2

[0102] Another example of the time resource information is shown in Table 3. In Table 3, a new time duration range “durationInsymbolsType2-r20” may be defined for aperiodic access beam indication if the access beam is to be used to connect with another RIS node, as the example shown in Table 3, in which the Mmax of the durationInSymbolsType2-r20 is 56 or 112.

[0103] Table 3

[0104] It is to be understood that the parameters and values in Table 2 and Table 3 are only for the purpose of illustration, without suggesting any limitation. Any suitable parameter or value may be applied. Scope of embodiments of the present disclosure is not limited here.

[0105] Several examples of the time resource information have been described. Additionally, the communication device 210 may perform at least one operation regarding time resource for the communication device 210 based on the conditions being satisfied. Specifically, in case of the first transmission delay of the first path is less than the second transmission delay of the second path, the conditions may include a first condition that a first time resource for the first path is later than a second time resource for the second path and a length of an overlapped part of the first time resource and the second time resource is larger than a time delay difference between the first path and the second path. Alternatively, the conditions may include a second condition that the first time resource is earlier than the second time resource and a time gap between the first time resource and the second time resource is less than the time delay difference between the first path and the second path.

[0106] Specifically, in case of the first transmission delay of the first path is larger than the second transmission delay of the second path, the conditions may include a first  condition that a first time resource for the first path is later than a second time resource for the second path and a time gap between the first time resource and the second time resource is less than the time delay difference between the first path and the second path. Alternatively, the conditions may include a second condition that the first time resource is earlier than the second time resource and a length of an overlapped part of the first time resource and the second time resource is larger than a time delay difference between the first path and the second path.

[0107] Specifically, the at least one operation may include at least one of: reducing a time length of a later time resource of the first time resource and the second timer resource; reducing a time length of the second time resource, or reducing a time length of the first time resource.

[0108] By configuring time resource following the conditions or by performing operations for time resource not following the conditions, it can avoid resource collision among the two modules of a RIS. Those conditions or predefined rules or operations may achieve a consistent understanding between receiving device and transmitting device. Thus, the accuracy and efficiency of the communication is improved. Further embodiments regarding the timing advance adjustment, the beam configuration, the time resource configuration and operations will be described with respect to FIG. 4 to FIG. 11B below.

[0109] FIG. 4 illustrates a signaling flow 400 of an example procedure of timing advance (TA) adjustment for RIS with multiple hops in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the signaling flow 400 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. As shown in FIG. 4, signaling flow 400 involves a gNB 430, a RIS A 420 and a RIS B 410. In some implementations, the gNB 430 may be implemented as the gNB 340 in FIG. 3A. Similarly, the RIS A 420 may be implemented as the RIS A 330 in FIG. 3A and the RIS B 410 may be implemented the RIS B 320 in FIG. 3A.

[0110] As illustrated, the gNB 430 initial access of control part of RIS A 420. In some embodiments, the gNB 430 may communicate with the first module (for example, control entity) of the RIS A 420 to establish the control link between the gNB 430 and the RIS A 420. Then, the gNB 430 may perform channel measure and / or training of link-2-1 in FIG. 3A. Furthermore, the gNB 430 initial access of control part of RIS B 410. Similarly, the  gNB 430 may communicate with the first module (for example, control entity) of the RIS B 410 to establish the control link between the gNB 430 and the RIS B 410. Moreover, the gNB 430 may configure beam information for access beam of RIS A 420 to indicate the beams to be used via the control link between the gNB 430 and the RIS A 420. Additionally, the gNB 430 may configure beam information for training backhaul beam of RIS B 410 to indicate the beams to be used. In addition, the gNB 430 may transmit reference signal (RS) on forwarding / backhaul link. Specifically, the gNB 430 may transmit RS to the RIS A 420 via the backhaul link between the gNB 430 and the RIS A 420. Then, the RIS A 420 may forward the RS to the RIS B 410 according to the beam information for access beam of RIS A 420. In response to receiving the RS according to the beam information for training backhaul beam, the RIS B 410 may determine the measurements based on the received signal. Further, the RIS B 410 may feedback the measuring results of the second path / link via RIS A 420 on control link between RIS B and gNB. The gNB 430 may determine the best beam pair for the link between RIS A and RIS B (link-2-2) according to the reported measuring results. Moreover, the gNB 430 may configure beam information for access beam of RIS A 420 to indicate the beams to be used for the transmission between RIS A and RIS B. Additionally, the gNB 430 may configure beam information for backhaul beam of RIS B 410 to indicate the beams to be used for the transmission between RIS A and RIS B.

[0111] In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the RIS B 410 may measure the channel between the RIS A 420 and the RIS B 410 , i.e., the link-2-2 in FIG. 3A, after the RIS A 420 being connected to the gNB 430. Furthermore, the RIS B 410 may turn on the forwarding module (i.e., the second module in FIG. 1B) after the RIS B 410 being connected to the gNB via RIS A 420 successfully. Specifically, the first module and the second module of the RIS B may be working at different frequency bands. For example, the first module of RIS B 410 may work at low frequency with better coverage and low probability being blocked. Additionally, the second module of RIS B 410 may work at high frequency with higher beam gain.

[0112] In this way, the UE can communicate with the gNB via RIS with multiple hops. Moreover, the beams used in the communication is configured based on measurements of reference signal. Thus, the communication is more flexible and the quality of the communication is improved.

[0113] Reference is made to FIG. 5, which illustrates an example 500 of TA adjustment in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the FIG. 5 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. In some implementations, the gNB, the RIS A, the UE A, the RIS B, and the UE B in FIG. 5 may be implementations of the gNB 340, the RIS A 330, the UE A 310, the RIS B 320 and the UE B 312 in FIG. 3A, respectively. Furthermore, the RIS B-C-link in FIG. 5 may be implemented as the link-1 in FIG. 3A and the RIS B-F-link in FIG. 5 may be implemented as the link-2-1 and link-2-2 in FIG. 3A.

[0114] In the embodiment of FIG. 5, the gNB may configured the RIS A and the RIS B before the signal is transmitted. As shown in FIG. 5, the time resource of the signal of the gNB may include time for downlink (DL) , uplink (UL) , and a time gap between them. Because of the length of the transmission path between the gNB and the RIS A, there may be a time delay with length T1 when the DL signal achieved at the RIS A. Correspondingly, the time for UL in RIS A may be advanced two times of the time length of T1 to assure the gNB receiving the signal at the time as configured. Similarly, because the UE A may receive the signal from the RIS A, the DL signal of the UE A may be delayed for a time length T2 larger than T1. Moreover, the UL signal may be advanced two times of a time length of T2 to assure the gNB receive the signal from the UE A via the RIS A at the predetermined time. The DL signal of the RIS B-C-link may be delayed for a time length of TC. Correspondingly, the UL signal of the RIS B-C-link may be advanced two times of a time length of TC. Moreover, because the DL signal of the RIS B-F-link is transmitted from the RIS A, the DL signal may be delayed for a time length of T5 after the beginning of the reception of the DL signal of RIS A. Correspondingly, the UL signal of the RIS B-F-link may be advanced two times of a time length of T5 before the beginning of transmission of the UL signal of the RIS A. Furthermore, the UE B communicate with the gNB via the RIS B and the RIS A. The DL signal of the UE B may be delayed for a time length of T6 after the beginning of the reception of the DL signal of RIS A. Correspondingly, the UL signal of the UE B may be advanced two times of the time length of T6 before the beginning of transmission of the UL signal of the RIS A. Additionally, the signal may be reference signal.

[0115] In this way, the signal in the communication between the UE and the gNB via the RIS with multiple hops can be aligned. Thus, the stability and efficiency of the communication is improved.

[0116] In some implementations, for a RIS, the TA for the control link is shorter than the TA for the data transmission link, for example, the backhaul link or the forwarding link (link-2-1 and link-2-2) , when the control link (link-1) is LOS.

[0117] For measuring and reporting the data transmission or forwarding link via RIS with multiple hops, the RIS B may receive, from the gNB via the control link of the link-1 in FIG. 3A, a configuration of a set of beams for receiving the reference signal. Furthermore, the RIS A may receive, from the gNB via the control link of the link-2-1 in FIG. 3A, a configuration of a backhaul beam for receiving the reference signal transmitted from gNB. In some embodiments, the RIS A may receive, from the gNB, via the control link of the link-2-1 in FIG. 3A, a configuration of a second set of beams for forwarding the reference signal to RIS B. Moreover, the gNB may transmit to the RIS B via the backhaul link of the link-2-1 and link-2-2 in FIG. 3A, a reference signal. In addition, for reporting the measurement results of the forwarding link via RIS with multiple hops, the first module of RIS B process the received reference signal for measurements. In some embodiments, the first module may be implemented as a mobile termination (MT) . Further, the RIS B may transmit the signal to the gNB via the control link between the RIS B and the gNB. Additionally, the RIS B may transmit the signal using the same timeline or UL resource of MT configured by the gNB in initial access.

[0118] Furthermore, the RIS B may transmit the signal with the measurements including additional information or results. Specifically, the measurements may include additional TA determined based on channel-state information reference signal (CSI-RS) and / or synchronization signal block (SSB) . Moreover, the signal associated with the measurement of the reference signal may include an indication to indicate the measurements is for the control link or the forwarding link.

[0119] Reference is made to FIG. 6, which illustrates an example 600 of TA adjustment in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the FIG. 6 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. In some implementations, the RIS B-C-link in FIG. 6 may be implemented as the link-1 in FIG. 3A and the RIS B-F-link in FIG. 6 may be implemented as the link-2-1 and the link-2-2 in FIG. 3A.

[0120] As illustrated in FIG. 6, the DL signal reception of the RIS B-C-link may be delayed for time length of TC and the DL signal reception of the RIS B-F-link may be  delayed for time length of TF. The difference between the TF and the TC is TD. The delay of the signal may be relative to the difference between the receiving time of the signal of the control link and the backhaul link.

[0121] In the embodiment of FIG. 6, the signal with the measurement may include a time difference between the receiving time of the transmission via the control link and the receiving time of the transmission via the backhaul link.

[0122] Furthermore, the RIS B may transmit the signal with the measurement including, but not limited to, a PRACH signal, an SRS, or a PUSCH signal. Moreover, the signal may be associated with a second identifier of the RIS B for second module connected via the backhaul link. In addition, there may be a first identifier different from the second identifier of the RIS B for the first module connected via the control link. In some implementations, the first identifier may be associated with the second identifier. Moreover, the TA determination for the backhaul link and the control link may be different.

[0123] Reference is made to FIG. 7, which illustrates an example 700 of TA determination procedure in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the FIG. 7 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. In some implementations, the RIS B-C-link in FIG. 7 may be implemented as the link-1 in FIG. 3A.

[0124] As illustrated in FIG. 7, the DL signal reception of the RIS B-C-link may be delayed for time length of TC and the DL signal reception of the RIS B-F-link may be delayed for time length of TF. The difference between the TF and the TC is TD. In some embodiments, the RIS B may transmit the signal according to the receiving time of backhaul link. Specifically, the RIS B may transmit the signal including a PRACH signal with an advance time 0, which means the time gap between the start point of transmission time and the end point of the reception time is the configured time gap between DL symbol / slot and UL symbol / slot, then a total transmission delay Ttotal= TF+ TC of the signal may be determined / measured at gNB, and gNB may determine the transmission delay for the second module of RIS B is Ttotal-TC, wherein TC is the transmission delay TC is determined previously for the first module of RIS B. For example, the UL signal 714 and the UL signal 712 may include a PRACH signal. The UL signal 714 may be delayed for a time length of TF+TC after the transmitter (Tx) time of MT timeline. The  beginning of the UL signal 714 is denoted as the receiver (Rx) time 1 in FIG. 7.

[0125] Alternatively, the RIS B may transmit the signal according to the reference time delay. Specifically, if there is a time difference of TD between the receiving time of the control link and the backhaul link, the RIS B may transmit the signal including an SRS signal or a PUSCH signal. As shown in FIG. 7, the UL signal 702 and the UL signal 704 may include an SRS signal or a PUSCH signal. The UL signal 704 is delayed for a time length of TD after the Tx time for MT timeline. The UL signal 702 may be delayed for a time length of TC after the Tx time 2 (i.e., the beginning of the transmission of the UL signal 704) . Moreover, a relative delay of TD may be determined / measured at gNB. Based on the measurements result and / or other information, gNB may determine the transmission delay for the second module of RIS B is TC+TD, wherein TC is the transmission delay TC is determined previously for the first module of RIS B.

[0126] In this way, the signal of the gNB and the RIS can be aligned and transmitted with more than one channel. Thus, the efficiency and the flexibility of the communication is improved.

[0127] In some implementations, the first module, for example, the MT, of the RIS B may transmit the signal to the gNB via the control link between the gNB and the RIS B. Furthermore, the signal may include, but not limited to, a PRACH signal, and one or more of an SRS signal and a PUSCH signal. In these cases, the signal may be determined based on the transmission delay difference between the control link and the backhaul link. Specifically, for example, if the transmission delay difference is larger than a cyclic prefix (CP) length, the signal may include a PRACH signal. Alternatively, if the transmission difference is less than or equal to the CP length, the signal may include an SRS signal or a PUSCH signal.

[0128] In some embodiments, for the backhaul link of the RIS B, if it’s to determine an initial TA determination associated with the TA of the signal of the backhaul link, the signal may include a PRACH signal. Alternatively, if it’s to determine an updating / adjusting TA for the backhaul link of the RIS B, the signal may include an SRS signal or a PUSCH signal.

[0129] Additionally, if the signal includes an SRS signal or a PUSCH signal, the signal may be transmitted with a new TA, and an offset between the applied new TA value and  an indicated TA value for the MT of the RIS B is introduced. Furthermore, the offset is a time difference measured between the control link and the backhaul link by RIS B.

[0130] Reference is made to FIG. 8, which illustrates an example 800 of TA determination procedure in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the FIG. 8 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. In some implementations, the gNB in FIG. 8 may be implemented as the gNB 340 in FIG. 3A.

[0131] In the embodiment of FIG. 8, the MT of the RIS B may process the received signal from the gNB, and may transmit a signal including a PRACH signal via the backhaul link. As illustrated in FIG. 8, the DL signal reception of the RIS B may be delayed for time length of TF. In some embodiments, the UL signal 802 of the RIS B may be delayed for a time length of TF after the beginning of the transmission of the UL signal 804, and the UL signal 802 of the RIS B is transmitted with time advance value being 0, or the time gap between the starting time of UL signal 802 and the end time of DL signal is same as the configured time gap between DL symbol / slot and UL symbol / slot. Furthermore, the Tdelay=2*TF is measured by gNB based on the PRACH signal, and gNB may determine the transmission delay for backhaul link of RIS B is Ttotal / 2. Moreover, the PRACH signal may be associated with an identifier of the RIS B for the backhaul link. In addition, the ID may include a first identifier for the MT of the RIS B and a second identifier for the forwarding (Fwd) entity of the RIS B, for example, the second module. In some implementations, the internal transmission delay between the MT and the Fwd of the RIS B may be included in the Tdelay for the backhaul link.

[0132] In this way, the signal of the gNB and the RIS can be aligned. Thus the efficiency and the reliability of the communication is improved.

[0133] In some embodiments, the MT of the RIS B may process the received signal and may transmit a signal including a PRACH signal via the backhaul link. Specifically, the RIS B may report or support the capability of transmitting signal generated by control part via forwarding entity of the RIS B. Furthermore, the identifier of the second module is associated with the identifier for the first module of the RIS B. Alternatively, the PRACH resource may be associated with the control part of the RIS B. Moreover, the gNB may determine the TA measured or determined to be applied to the backhaul link of a RIS node, and to be indicated to the control part of the RIS node. In addition, the PRACH resource  may be indicated to the MT of the RIS node directly when the RIS node transmit a requirement for further TA determination instead of the TA determined for the MT.

[0134] Moreover, after the gNB initial the TA determination and adjusting, there may be additional delay due to mobility. The additional delay may be reported and adjust. Furthermore, if the additional delay is larger than a predetermined time value, the delay is reported or a related signal is transmitted. Furthermore, the mechanism for determining the TA may be indicated to the RIS node.

[0135] In some embodiments, the TA adjusting formula or range for the MT of the RIS may be different from the TA adjusting formula or range for the Fwd of the RIS. The gNB may indicate an additional TA information to the MT of the RIS B. In these cases, the additional TA may be associated with the second identifier of the RIS B for the backhaul link. Additionally, an indication may be included in the TA information to indicate in which link will apply the TA. Furthermore, the TA for the Fwd module / entity of the RIS may be indicated with one or more offsets to the TA indicated for the control module / link / entity. In some implementations, the backhaul link may be based on a NLOS path, and the control link may be based on a LOS link. Furthermore, the transmission delay of the backhaul link is larger than the delay for the control link. In these cases, the adjusting value range of the one or more offsets may be larger than the adjusting value range for TA adjusting for the control link, for example, being a positive value. Moreover, the TA value for the backhaul link may be based on a positive offset. The number of the slots advanced for the TA for the Fwd of the RIS is determined as:

[0136] where the TA=0…MTA , MTA=2K-1. The NTA-fwd means the TA for the Fwd module / entity / link of the RIS. Furthermore, the NTA-mt means the the TA for the MT of the RIS. The MTA means the longest time that can be adjusted. Here K=6, or 7. μ is the subcarrier spacing (SCS) index for control link, or a reference SCS index indicated / predefined for backhaul link.

[0137] Alternatively, the TA for the Fwd module / entity / link of the RIS may be indicated with one or more offsets to the TA indicated for the control link. For example, the TA for the Fwd module / entity / link of the RIS is determined as:

[0138] where the TA 0=0, 1; TA1=0…MTA. The MTA=2K-1 means the longest time can be adjusted for TA1. Here K=6. The μ is the SCS index for control link, or a reference SCS index indicated / predefined for backhaul link. In some embodiments, both the TA 0 and the TA1 are indicated. Furthermore, the is used to indicate the coarse range for the TA information. The NTA-fwd means the TA for the Fwd module / entity / link of the RIS. Furthermore, the NTA-mt means the TA for the MT of the RIS.

[0139] In addition, the initial TA for the Fwd of the RIS may be indicated based on the initial TA for the control link. In these cases, the updated TA information for the Fwd of the RIS may be indicated based on the TA for the backhaul link of the RIS. Moreover, the initial TA may be indicated via RRC. Furthermore, the updated TA may be indicated via medium access control control element (MAC-CE) , if the Fwd entity / module of the RIS is with mobility. Alternatively, the updated TA may be indicated via RRC, if the Fwd entity / module of the RIS is without mobility.

[0140] Reference is made to FIG. 9, which illustrates an example 900 of TA adjustment in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. As illustrated in FIG. 9, the DL signal of the control link (CL) Rx timing may be delayed for time length of TC and the DL signal of the forwarding link (FL) Rx timing may be delayed for time length of TF. Furthermore, the UL signal of the control link (CL) Tx timing may be advanced for time length of TC and the UL signal of the forwarding link (FL) Tx timing may be advanced for time length of TF before the time at which the gNB is determined to begin to receive the signal.

[0141] In addition, for common time division duplex (TDD) pattern, the time gap (Tg) between the last static DL symbol and the first static UL symbol is larger than the maximum value of summation of twice the transmission delay (Tdelay, i) , and the switching delay between the UL transmission and the DL reception (Tswitch, i)

[0142] Tg≥max (2*Tdelay, i+Tswitch, i)

[0143] where the i means the ith hop RIS. In some implementations, if UL data preparation time is considered also, then

[0144] Tg≥max (2*Tdelay, i+Tswitch, i+TUL-pre) .

[0145] As illustrated in FIG. 9, The end time of DL reception on forwarding link is earlier than the starting time of UL transmission on control link. In this way, the DL reception and the starting time of the UL transmission of the RIS is aligned with the time of gNB respectively. Thus, the efficiency and the reliability of the communication is improved.

[0146] Furthermore, for beam training for backhaul link of the RIS B, the gNB may indicates the beam information for the RIS A and the RIS B. Reference is made to FIG. 10, which illustrates an example procedure 1000 of beam training in accordance with some embodiments of the present disclosure. For the purposes of discussion, the FIG. 10 will be discussed with reference to FIG. 3A. For example, the gNB in FIG. 10 may be implemented as the gNB 340 in FIG. 3A. Similarly, the RIS A in FIG. 10 may be implemented as the RIS A 330 in FIG. 3A, and the RIS B in FIG. 10 may be implemented as the RIS B 320 in FIG. 3A.

[0147] Furthermore, the beam indication may indicate the backhaul beam for RIS A and RIS B. Moreover, the beam indication may indicate the access beam for the RIS A. Moreover, the RS are with UE-specific configuration, and only the RIS which receives the configuration can use the resources to determine measurement.

[0148] Alternatively, or in addition to, the gNB may indicate the RS information for beam training to the MT of the RIS B. In these cases, the gNB may transmit, to the RIS A, the associated Tx beam information. Furthermore, the Tx beam information may include the access beam of RIS A, i.e., access beam of RIS A, or a dedicated TCI state by considering the access beam of RIS A.

[0149] Additionally, the RS information may indicate the resource of RS. The RS may be periodic. Furthermore, the RS information may include common period for multiple resource of a resource set. Moreover, the resource or a set of the resource indicate the resources are used for beam training of MT and / or Fwd of the RIS. In some implementations, the RIS B changes the Rx beam of forwarding / backhaul link, and MT measures the reference signal receiving power (RSRP) per beam pair, then reports the result to gNB via the control link.

[0150] Furthermore, the gNB may indicate the hop order of the RIS or the hop type of the RIS via RRC or OAM. The hop type may include parent node, child node, and both parent node and child node. Specifically, the hop type of parent node means the RIS node  receive the signal from the gNB, and transmit the signal to one or more other RIS. The hop type of the child node means the RIS receive the signal from other RIS, and transmit the signal to the UE. The hop type of both parent node and child node means the RIS receive the signal from other RIS and transmit the signal to other RIS. Moreover, the RIS identifier of the hop type may be indicated via RRC or OAM.

[0151] In addition, the gNB may indicate the direction or location of the RIS node. In some embodiments, if the RIS node is stable, the gNB may indicate the direction or location of the RIS node via RRC or OAM. Specifically, the direction and location of the RIS node may indicate the direction of transmission of the signal for the RIS in the topology network of communications.

[0152] In some implementations, the gNB may further transmit a backhaul beam indication to the RIS. Furthermore, the gNB may further indicate one or more beams for the RIS to be used in the communications. The backhaul beam indication may include beam identifier and related time information in terms of symbol.

[0153] Additionally, the gNB may further transmit an access beam indication indicating the beam for the access link of the RIS. The access beam indication may include the beam identifier and the time resource information indicating the application time of the beam. Examples of the time resource information have been described with respect to Table 2 and Table 3 above. With such time resource information, the minimum time may be larger than the transmission delay between the MT and the Fwd of the RIS, as the Mmax of the durationInSymbols-r18 is 56 or 112.

[0154] Furthermore, there may be symboloffset indicates the symbol offset in one slot. If the MT and Fwd of the RIS may be connected with gNB with different paths, the minimum value for the symbol offset is to be the one.

[0155] Moreover, the gNB may transmit the time resource location between the MT and the Fwd. In addition, if the MT and Fwd cannot simultaneously UL transmission. Furthermore, if the time resource MT and Fwd can simultaneously transmission, simultaneously transmission is forbidden to avoid possible power variation due to the transmission state switching between simultaneously transmission and single transmission.

[0156] In some implementations, if the transmission time delay for the control link is smaller than the transmission time delay of forwarding link, and the time resource for  forwarding link is earlier than that for control link. In these cases, the resources can be overlapped, and the maximum overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference. Furthermore, if the difference is less than a symbol, there may be no overlap.

[0157] Alternatively, if the transmission time delay for the control link is smaller than the transmission time delay of forwarding link, and the time resource for control link is earlier than that for forwarding link, a time gap with a length is larger than the transmission delay difference should be located between the two resources. Furthermore, there may be at least one symbols.

[0158] As illustrated in FIG. 11A, the Rx duration in gNB may be overlapped. Furthermore, the Tx duration for F-link is advanced for a time length of TM. Similarly, the Tx duration for c-link. Correspondingly, in FIG. 11B the time resource may be allocated to the C-link or the F-link. Furthermore, there is a minimum gap between the UL and the DL signal.

[0159] In some embodiments, to allocate time resource between the MT and the Fwd of the RIS, the time length of the later source may be reduced if the overlap or time gap does not meet the conditions. Furthermore, the RIS node does not support simultaneously UL transmission, and the transmission delay of forwarding link between base station and RIS node, is different with the transmission delay of control link between the (same) base station and RIS node. The transmission delay of control link may be shorter than the transmission delay of forwarding link.

[0160] If the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The two resources may not have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. In these cases, if the transmission delay difference is less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected.

[0161] If the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, then RIS node reduces the time domain resource allocated for the control part, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0162] If the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node is later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node,  then RIS node expects the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0163] Moreover, if the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, then RIS node may reduce the time length of the forwarding resource, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0164] Alternatively, the transmission delay of control link may be longer than the transmission delay of forwarding link.

[0165] Furthermore, the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may expect the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference. In these cases, If the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, then RIS node may reduce the time length of the resource for control part, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0166] Moreover, the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node is later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may not expect the two resources have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. If the transmission delay difference may be less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected. Furthermore, if the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, then RIS node may reduce the time domain resource allocated for the forwarding part, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0167] In other embodiments, the RIS node may not support simultaneously UL transmission, and the transmission delay of forwarding link between base station and RIS node, may be different with the transmission delay of control link between the (same) base station and RIS node. Furthermore, the transmission delay of control link is shorter than the transmission delay of forwarding link.

[0168] Moreover, if the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may not expect the two resources have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. In addition, if the transmission delay difference is  less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected. Additionally, if the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, RIS node may reduce the time length of the forwarding resource, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0169] Alternatively, the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node, then RIS node expects the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference. If the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, then RIS node reduces the time length of the forwarding resource, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0170] If the transmission delay of control link is longer than the transmission delay of forwarding link. Further, if the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node expects the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0171] In these cases, if the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, then RIS node may reduce the time length of the forwarding resource, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0172] Furthermore, the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node does not expect the two resources have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. If the transmission delay difference is less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected. In addition, if the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, then RIS node may reduce the time length of the forwarding resource, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0173] Alternatively, the time length of resource allocated for control part may be reduced, and assume the information forwarded on forwarding link is more important. Further, the RIS node may not support simultaneously UL transmission, and the transmission delay of forwarding link between base station and RIS node, may be different with the transmission delay of control link between the (same) base station and RIS node.

[0174] Moreover, if the transmission delay of control link is shorter than the  transmission delay of forwarding link. Furthermore, if the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may not expect the two resources have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. If the transmission delay difference may be less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected. If the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, he RIS node may reduce the time domain resource allocated for the control part, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0175] In some embodiments, the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may expect the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference. Moreover, if the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, RIS node may reduce the time domain resource allocated for the control part, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0176] Alternatively, the transmission delay of control link may be longer than the transmission delay of forwarding link. The start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be earlier than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node may expect the time gap between the two resources is no less than the transmission delay difference. In addition, if the time gap length is less than transmission delay difference, then RIS node reduces the time domain resource allocated for the control part, until the time gap is no less than the transmission delay difference.

[0177] Moreover, if the start time of time domain resource for forwarding resource of RIS node may be later than the start time of time domain resource allocated for control part of RIS node. The RIS node does not expect the two resources have an overlap larger than the transmission delay difference. If the transmission delay difference is less than a symbol length, then no overlap will be expected. Furthermore, if the overlap length is larger than the transmission delay, then RIS node reduces the time domain resource allocated for the control part, until the overlap length is equal to or less than the transmission delay difference.

[0178] For RIS side, the transmission scheme for RIS with multiple hops may include,  but not limited to, accessing to network device for control link via a first path; receiving the reference signal configuration for forwarding link measurement, and path for forwarding link between network device and the RIS is different with the first path; transmitting UL signal associated with the forwarding link via control link with a first path; receiving TA adjusting value for forwarding link, which is different with the value for control link; transmitting RSRP based on the RS configured for forwarding link; receiving the beam indication for data forwarding; and forwarding data according to the beam indication and the TA adjusting value.
