Description

METHOD FOR MANAGING PROTOCOL DATA UNIT SESSIONS, ENTITY WITH ACCESS AND MOBILITY MANAGEMENT FUNCTION, AND USER EQUIPMENT TECHNICAL FIELD

[001] The present invention relates to session management of PDU, and in particular the establishment of user plan resources for PDU sessions. FUNDAMENTALS

[002] In the telecommunications arena, there is a constant evolution underway in order to provide efficient and reliable solutions for the use of wireless communication networks. Each new generation has its own technical challenges to deal with different situations and processes that are necessary to connect and serve devices connected to the wireless network. This is especially true for cellular telecommunications networks.

[003] Cellular telecommunications networks comprise, at a high level, an access infrastructure and a core infrastructure. The access infrastructure provides radio access for connecting devices and handles the connectivity of these devices. The core infrastructure provides authentication, billing, quality of service (QoS), and similar user / device management features. In addition, the core network also provides access to external networks such as, for example, the Internet. It should be noted that connecting devices are often denoted as user equipment (UE), but devices do not necessarily need to be a user; they can be any type of device that connects to the network, i.e., a device capable of wireless communication with a radio access network node. The UE can, for example, be a smartphone, laptop, PC, utility device, vehicle, smart sensor, etc. With the advent of the Internet of Things (IoT). Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 9 / 58 / 33 many different types of devices, functions and solutions are being developed involving human interaction or as independent devices that offer different solutions or functions.

[004] The Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has begun work on the development and design of the next-generation mobile communications system (also known as the 5G Mobile Communication System or Next Generation (NG) System or simply “5G” or “NG” for short). 3GPP is currently in the process of specifying the 5G radio interface called New Radio (NR) or “G-UTRA”, as well as a Next Generation Packet Core Network (NG-CN or NGC).

[005] A user device (UD) needs to register on a network in order to receive services that require registration. A registration procedure is used in the following situations: (1) when the UD initially registers on a 5G system; (2) when the UD initiates a registration procedure due to mobility, for example, when the UD moves to a new Tracking Area (TA) in idle mode; (3) when the UD performs a periodic update due to the expiration of a predefined idle period, etc.

[006] During an initial registration, an Equipment Identity Mobile (ME) is obtained from the UE. An Access and Mobility Management (AMF) function operator can verify the ME Identity with an EIR. The AMF then passes the ME Identity (IMEISV) to a Unified Data Management (UDM), a Session Management (SMF) function, and a Policy Control Function (PCF). The AMF is also known as the Mobility Management (MMF) function; consequently, the AMF and MMF are equivalent. SUMMARY

[007] In the registration of a user device, UE, on a Network Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 10 / 58 / 33 of 5G Core (CN) states that it is not possible for the Access and Mobility Management (AMF) function to know how to adjust or initiate the requested user plan (UP) resources for a particular Protocol Data Unit (PDU) session in which the UE has UP data to transmit. The present invention relates to this problem.

[008] For example, in one embodiment, the UE includes information in a registration request message (e.g., Connection Request message, Tracking Area Update (TAU), Registration Request, or similar) about which the PDU session(s) request(s) UP resources (e.g., Data Radio Bearings (DBRs) on a radio interface and in the related UP tunnels between network functions in the network). The AMF receives the registration request message transmitted through the UE which includes the information regarding what the PDU session(s) request from the UP resources. The AMF requests the establishment of the UP resources, according to the information regarding what the PDU session(s) request from the UP resources in the registration request message transmitted through the UE. In response to the request for the establishment of the UP resources, a Radio Access Network (RAN) and SMF(s) allocate the UP resources accordingly.

[009] The present invention is carried out in a number of embodiments, for example, in a method for managing Protocol Data Unit, PDU, sessions, with steps of receiving, in an Access and Mobility Management Entity, AMF, a registration request message transmitted through a user device, UE, wherein the registration request message comprises information indicating that one or more PDU sessions request user plan, UP, resources, and identifies each of the PDU sessions requesting UP resources, and in response to receiving the registration request message, the AMF transmits to a management function Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 11 / 58 / 33 of session, SMF, a UP resource request message to request that the SMF establish UP resources for at least one of the PDU sessions requesting UP resources. The method may additionally comprise, in response to receiving the UP resource request message, the SMF triggering a UP function relocation.

[0010] In addition, the registration request message may comprise a registration type identifier (ID) indicating that the UE is in a registered state and initiates registration due to mobility. The method may further comprise steps of receiving information transmitted by session management, SM, by the SMF in response to the UP resource request message, wherein the SM information is SM N2 information, the AMF transmitting to an access node serving the UE a PDU N2 session request message, wherein the message includes session management information. Wherein the SM N2 information comprises information indicating a quality of service (QoS) and tunnel endpoint information.

[0011] The UP resources for an identified PDU session requesting UP resources may include data radio carriers, DRBs, on a radio interface and a UP tunnel between a UP function and the access node serving the UE. The registration request message comprises a tracking indicator indicating that the UE is requesting that the network maintain a signaling connection with the UE. The method may further comprise the steps of AMF storage information (e.g., a local indicator) indicating that the UE has requested that the signaling connection be maintained, and AMF sending information to a node of a radio access network (RAN) serving the UE, wherein the information sent to the node indicates that the UE has requested that the signaling connection be maintained.

[0012] In another modality, an entity with the function of Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 12 / 58 / 33 Access and Mobility Management, AMF, is provided for the session management of Protocol Data Units, PDUs, the AMF comprising a data processing system, a data storage system, and a network interface, wherein the data processing system is adapted to execute computer-readable instructions stored in the data storage system, to receive through the network interface a registration request message transmitted through a user device, UE, wherein the registration request message comprises information indicating that one or more PDU sessions request user plane resources, UP, and identification of each of the PDU sessions requesting UP resources;and in response to receiving the registration request message, transmission via the network interface to a session management function, SMF, of a UP resource request message to request that SMF establish UP resources for at least one of the identified PDU sessions requesting UP resources.

[0013] In yet another embodiment, a method, in user equipment, UE, is provided for managing Protocol Data Unit, PDU, session, the method comprising determining, through user equipment, UE, that one or more PDU sessions request user plane, UP, resources, determining, through UE, that a registration request message needs to be transmitted, and after determining that a) the registration request message needs to be transmitted and b) one or more PDU sessions request UP resources, UE transmits the registration request message, wherein the registration request message comprises information indicating that one or more PDU sessions request UP resources.

[0014] In the UE method, the record request message may additionally include a record type identifier, ID, for Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 13 / 58 / 33, identify a registration type, a UE ID, security parameters, network slice selection help information, and Network Slice Selection Help Information, NSSAI. The registration request message may additionally include a registration type identifier indicating that the UE is in a registered state and initiates registration due to mobility. UP resources for the identified PDU session include data radio carriers, DRBs, on a radio interface and a UP tunnel.

[0015] The registration request message may additionally include a tracking indicator showing that the UE is requesting that the network maintain a signaling connection with the UE.

[0016] In yet another embodiment, a user equipment, UE, comprising a data processing system, a data storage system, a radio transmitter and an antenna-coupled receiver, wherein the data processing system is adapted to execute computer-readable instructions to determine that one or more sessions of protocol data units, PDUs, request user plane resources, UPs, determine that a registration request message needs to be transmitted using the radio transmitter and after determining that a) the registration request message needs to be transmitted and b) one or more PDU sessions request UP resources, transmits using the radio transmitter the registration request message, wherein the registration request message comprises information indicating that one or more PDU sessions request UP resources.

[0017] One advantage provided by the modalities described here is that the network can configure the UP resources to allow the transfer of UP data to the PDU session(s) indicated in a registration request message transmitted by a UE. [0030] As mentioned above, user equipment (UE) 102 needs to register on the network to receive services that require registration. With reference now to Figure 1, Figure 1 illustrates a 5G communication system. Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 15 / 58 / 33 copy 100. The 5G communication system 100 illustrates a point-to-point reference point representation. Figure 1 shows some nodes and functions of the network. A user device (UD) 102 connects to the network through a radio access network (RAN) node 108. The RAN can be, for example, a base station, a NodeB or an eNodeB. It should be noted that the UD can be a mobile phone, for example, a smartphone, or some other type of unit with wireless communication capabilities, such as Internet of Things (IoT) devices, machine-to-machine devices, vehicles, sensors, computers, laptops and so on. RAN 108 is in turn connected to a core network comprising a User Plane Function (UPF) 112, an Access and Mobility Management (AMF) function 104, a Session Management Function (SMF) 106, and a Policy Control Function (PCF) 120.In addition, the network may comprise an Authentication Server Function (AUSF) 121, a Unified Data Management (UDM) node 122, an application function (AF) 123 and a connection to an external data network (DN) 124. These nodes / functions are interconnected with different interfaces NG1-NG15, as shown in Figure 1; it should be noted that the interfaces may also be denoted N1 to N15.

[0031] It should be noted that all nodes and functions may be physically located as separate nodes or partially embedded in different nodes along with other nodes / functions, but for illustrative purposes shown as separate entities.

[0032] The registration procedure is used in the following situations: (1) when the UE 102 initially registers on a 5G system; (2) when the UE initiates a registration procedure due to mobility, for example, when the UE moves to a new registration area (e.g., a new Tracking Area (TA)) in idle mode; (3) when the UE 102 performs a periodic update due to the expiration of an inactivity period. Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 16 / 58 / 33 predefined, etc.

[0033] During an initial registration, a Mobile Equipment Identity (ME) is obtained from UE 102. An Access and Mobility Management (AMF) function operator 104 can verify the ME Identity with an EIR. The AMF then passes the ME Identity (IMEISV) to a Unified Data Management (UDM), a Session Management (SMF) function, and a Policy Control (PCF) function.

[0034] Figure 2 is a message flowchart illustrating a UE 200 registration process, according to one modality.

[0035] In step 1, UE 102 transmits a registration request message to RAN 108. In one embodiment, the registration request message may comprise: a registration type identifier (ID) for identifying a registration type, a UE ID (e.g., a Permanent ID or a Temporary ID), security parameters, Network Slice Selection Aid (NSSAI) information, UE 5GCN capacity information, PDU session status information, and Radio Resource Control (RRC) parameters indicating Permanent ID or Temporary ID, the Selected Network, and the NSSAI.The registration type ID indicates whether the UE 102 wants to perform an “initial registration” (i.e., the UE 102 is in an unregistered state), a “mobility registration” (i.e., the UE 102 is in a registered state and initiates a registration due to mobility), or a “periodic registration” (i.e., the UE 102 is in a registered state and initiates a registration due to the periodic update timer having expired).

[0036] Advantageously, the registration request message may also include information that identifies one or more Protocol Data Unit (PDU) sessions requesting user plane (UP) resources, such as Data Radio Carrier(s) and tunnels between the UP function (UPF) and RAN. In one embodiment, UE 102 tags the PDU session(s). Petition 870250000595, dated 01 / 03 / 2025, p. 17 / 58 / 33, requesting the establishment of UP resources with an active indicator in the registration request message. In some modes, the marked PDU session(s) request the establishment of UP resources because UE 102 has UP data to transmit to the network. For example, the registration request message may include a first ordered set of N bits (i.e., a “bitmap”), where each of the N bits corresponds to a different of the N possible PDU sessions that could require UP resources (e.g., the first bit in the string corresponds to a first PDU session, the second bit in the string corresponds to a second PDU session, etc.). In some modalities, N equals the total number of PDU sessions that are considered active through the UE (e.g., N = 3), while in other modalities N equals the total number of possible active PDU sessions in the UE (e.g., N = 16).The value of each bit in the bit string indicates whether the PDU session corresponds to the bit requesting UP resources (for example, if bit n is set to a value of 1, then the PDU session corresponding to this bit requests UP resources, but if bit n is set to a value of 0, then the corresponding PDU session does not request UP resources). In this way, the UE can signal to the network the identity of the PDU session requesting UP resources.

[0037] Additionally, the registration request message may also include information (e.g., an indicator) indicating that UE 102 is requesting “Follow-up” – that is, the UE is requesting that the network maintain the signaling connection with the UE after the registration procedure is completed, for example, the UE has additional messages (e.g., a PDU session establishment message) to send to the network.

[0038] In step 2, if the registration request message includes an ID (Permanent or Temporary) that does not indicate a valid AMF, RAN 108 Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 18 / 58 / 33 selects an AMF 104 based on Radio Access Technology (RAT) and NSSAI, if available.

[0039] In step 3, RAN 108 transmits the registration request message to AMF 104. In one embodiment, the registration request message transmitted to AMF 104 additionally comprises: Location Information, Cell Identity, and RAT type. The Location Information, Cell Identity, and RAT type relate to the cell in which the UE is located.

[0040] In step 4, if the registration request message includes the UE Temporary ID and the AMF server 104 has changed since the last registration, AMF 104 can transmit an information request to the old AMF. The Information Request includes the complete IE registration request message in order to request the UE Permanent Mobility and Mobility Management (MM) Context.

[0041] In step 5, in response to the Information Request transmitted by AMF 104, the legacy AMF responds with an information response. The information response comprises the Permanent ID, the MM Context, and the SMF information. In some modes, the legacy AMF has stored information regarding active PDU sessions. If the legacy AMF has stored information about active PDU sessions, the legacy AMF includes the SMF information comprising the SMF identities and the corresponding PDU session identities in the information response, so that AMF 104 can map the PDU sessions to SMFs.

[0042] In step 6, if the Permanent ID is not provided via UE 102 nor retrieved from the old AMF in the Information response, an Identity Request procedure is initiated by AMF 104 by transmitting an Identity Request message to UE 102.

[0043] In step 7, in response to the Request message Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 19 / 58 / 33 Identity: UE 102 responds to AMF 104 with an identity response message including the Permanent ID.

[0044] In step 8, AMF 104 selects an AUSF if the registration request message is not sent with integrity protection or integrity protection is indicated as failed based on the Permanent ID contained in the Information Response (step 5).

[0045] In step 9, if AMF 104 selects AUSF because the registration request message is not sent with integrity protection or integrity protection is indicated as failed, AUSF initiates authentication of UE 102 and NAS security functions. Once security for the registration request message is established, AMF 104 can retrieve the IMEI of UE 102.

[0046] In step 10, AMF 104 transmits an identity request to UE 102 to retrieve the ME identity from UE if the ME identity is not provided through UE 102 in the registration request message nor retrieved from the old AMF in the Information Response.

[0047] In step 11, in some modalities, the AMF initiates an ME identity verification.

[0048] In step 11a, AMF 104 sends a request (e.g., N11) to SMF 106. If AMF 104 changes, AMF 104 notifies each SMF 106 of the new AMF 104 serving UE 102 (i.e., AMF 104 sends the request to each SMF). The new AMF 104 checks the PDU session status received from UE 102 against the SMF information received from the old AMF. If AMF 104 has not changed, AMF 104 checks the PDU session status received from UE 102 against the available SMF information. After AMF 104 determines the active PDU sessions on UE 102, AMF 104 releases any network resources related to PDU sessions that are not active on UE 102. Petition 870250000595, dated 01 / 03 / 2025, p. 20 / 58 / 33

[0049] Additionally, if the registration request message indicates that one or more PDU sessions request UP resources, then for each such PDU session, AMF 104 transmits to the SMF responsible for handling the PDU session a UP resource request to cause the SMF to establish UP resources for the PDU session. For example, if the registration request message indicates that a PDU session being handled by SMF 106 requests UP resources, the request sent to SMF 106 in step 11a will also include the UP resource request.

[0050] In step 11b, in response to the UP resource request, SMF 106 transmits a UP resource response (e.g., N1 response). In some modes, SMF 106 decides to trigger a UPF relocation. In some modes, SMF 106 provides SM information (e.g., SM N2 information) in the UP resource response (e.g., N1 response). SM information may include Quality of Service (QoS) service information and tunnel endpoint information to establish a tunnel between the radio access network (RAN) and UPF. In some modes, SMF provides SM information in the response only if AMF specifically requested it in the request.

[0051] In stage 12, in some modalities, AMF 104 selects a UDM based on the permanent ID of UE 102.

[0052] In step 13, AMF 104 initiates a Location Update procedure if: (1) AMF 104 has changed since the last record; (2) there is no valid subscription context for UE 102 in AMF 104; or (3) UE 102 provides a Permanent ID that does not refer to a valid context in AMF 104. When the Location Update procedure is initiated, the UDM initiates the Cancellation Location for the old AMF, if available. In response to the Cancellation Location, the old AMF removes the associated MM context and notifies all possibly affected SMF(s). Petition 870250000595, dated 01 / 03 / 2025, p. 21 / 58 / 33 associated. In some modalities, the interactions between the UDM and the PCF include information related to mobility restrictions.

[0053] In step 14, in some modalities, AMF 104 selects the PCF based on the permanent ID of UE 102.

[0054] In step 15, in some modes, AMF 104 transmits a Request for Establishment of EU Context to the PCF to apply operator policies for EU 102.

[0055] In step 16, the PCF responds to the EU Context Establishment Request with EU Context Establishment Confirmed for AMF 104.

[0056] In step 17, in some modes, the old AMF transmits a UE Context Termination Request to the PCF.

[0057] In step 18, the PCF responds to the EU Context Termination Request with an Acknowledged EU Context Termination for the old AMF.

[0058] In step 19, AMF 104 transmits UE context adjustment security context information (Access Stratum (AS)) to RAN 108. If in step 11b AMF receives SM Information from SMF 106, then this SM information and an N2 PDU Session Request (Quality of Service (QoS), tunnel information, etc.) is included in the UE Context adjustment.

[0059] AMF 104 validates the presence of UE 102 at the (new) location and if all checks are successful and the UE has scheduled a PDU session that requires UP resources or requested follow-up, then the connection must be maintained and the AMF requests the RAN to establish a secure connection to the UE by providing Access Stratum (AS) security context information in the UE context adjustment message sent to the RAN.

[0060] In some modes, AMF 104 rejects the message of Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 22 / 58 / 33 request for registration with an appropriate reason for rejection if the EU is not allowed to register at the current location.

[0061] In step 19a, if the UE Context adjustment request includes a PDU Session request, RAN 108 performs RRC Connection Reconfiguration with UE 102 in order to establish the default radio carrier (DRB) for the PDU Session request(s) received in step 19.

[0062] In step 20, AMF 104 sends a Registration Acceptance message to UE 102 indicating that the registration request message has been accepted. In one mode, the Registration Acceptance message comprises: Temporary ID, registration area, mobility restrictions, and PDU session status. AMF 104 indicates the PDU session status to UE 102. Consequently, UE removes any internal resources related to PDU sessions that are not marked as active in the received PDU session status. If the PDU session status information is in the registration request message, AMF 104 indicates the corresponding PDU session status to UE 102. In some modes, the Registration Acceptance message includes the Temporary ID if AMF 104 allocates a new temporary ID to UE 102. In some modes, the Registration Acceptance message includes mobility restrictions if mobility restrictions apply to UE 102.

[0063] In step 21, in response to the Registration Acceptance message, UE 102 transmits a Registration Complete message to AMF 104. If a new temporary ID is included in the registration acceptance message, the Registration Complete message acknowledges to AMF 104 that the new temporary ID is assigned.

[0064] Figure 3 is a flowchart that illustrates a process 300, according to a modality, that is executed by AMF 104 for PDU session management. Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 23 / 58 / 33

[0065] Process 300 can begin with step 302 in which AMF 104 receives a registration request message transmitted via UE 102, where the registration request message comprises information that identifies a PDU session requesting UP resources.

[0066] In step 304, in response to receiving the registration request message, AMF 104 transmits to SMF 106 a UP resource request message to request SMF 106 to establish UP resources for the identified PDU session.

[0067] In some modes, in response to receiving the UP resource request message, SMF 106 triggers a UP function relocation.

[0068] In some modes, AMF 104 additionally receives session management information (e.g., SM N2 information) transmitted by SMF 106 in response to the UP resource request message.

[0069] In some embodiments, AMF 104 transmits to an access node 108 that serves UE 102 a message (e.g., N2 PDU Session Request), wherein the message includes session management information (e.g., N2 SM information).

[0070] In some modes, session management information (e.g., SM N2 information) comprises information indicating a quality of service (QoS) and tunnel endpoint information.

[0071] In some embodiments, the UP resources for the identified PDU session include data radio carriers (DRBs) on a radio interface and UP tunnels between a UP function and the access node 108 serving UE 102.

[0072] Figure 4 is a flowchart illustrating a 400 process, according to a modality, which is executed through UE 102 to Petition 870250000595, dated 03 / 01 / 2025, page 24 / 58 / 33 PDU session management.

[0073] Process 400 can begin with step 402 in which UE 102 determines an initial PDU session requesting UP resources.

[0074] In step 404, the UE determines that a registration request message needs to be transmitted (e.g., the UE determines that it needs to perform a mobility registration). In some modes, step 404 is performed as a result of the UE determining that the first PDU session requests UP resources. In other modes, step 404 is performed periodically (e.g., before step 402). In some modes, the UE step determines that a registration request message needs to be transmitted with the UE determining that the UE has moved to a new registration area (e.g., the UE has moved out of the registration area in which the UE previously registered).

[0075] In step 406, UE 102 transmits a registration request message after determining that i) the first PDU session requests UP resources and ii) a registration request message needs to be transmitted. The registration request message comprises information indicating that the first PDU session requests UP resources.

[0076] In some modes, the UE may additionally determine that a second PDU session also requests UP and ALT resources; the registration request message transmitted in step 406 includes information indicating that both the first and second PDU sessions request UP resources.

[0077] For example, in some embodiments, the UE executes a process 900 (see Figure 9), which process includes: 1) the UE periodically determining whether it has moved to a new registration area (step 902) (i.e., determining that a registration request message needs to be sent) and, as a result of determining that it has moved to a new registration area, the UE generates a request message.
