Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to fasteners, and more particularly, to a fastener including a plurality of texture elements positioned on a head of the fastener. Background Art

[0002] Fasteners are used in many manufacturing applications, including aerospace manufacturing. When certain fasteners are installed in a workpiece, a sealant may first be applied to at least a portion of the fastener and then the fastener is positioned in a hole in the workpiece. When the fastener is secured to the workpiece (e.g., during formation of a ball of a single-sided fastener), the sealant may create a hydraulic lock between the head of the fastener and the top of the hole. When this occurs, the trapped sealant may expand into the hole and may create a bulge in the workpiece or otherwise damage the workpiece. Additionally, when the fastener is secured to the workpiece, particularly when the sealant is applied below the head of the fastener and along the shank of the fastener, mechanical efforts are made to prevent the fastener from rotating. For example, in the case of a single-sided fastener, the fastener tends to rotate and the frangible drive element will not disengage under the intended torque. Summary of the invention

[0023] As used herein, with respect to measurements, "about" and "substantially" each mean + / - 5%.

[0024] The following provides illustrative, non-exhaustive examples of subject matter in accordance with the present disclosure, which may or may not be claimed.

[0025] In an example, fasteners and methods of making and using the same are described herein. As described above, prior art fasteners may experience a hydraulic lock between the head of the fastener and the top of a hole into which the fastener is positioned when the fastener is secured to a workpiece. Captured sealant may expand into the hole and may create a bulge in the workpiece or otherwise damage the workpiece. Additionally, an elongated portion of the fastener may rotate when the conventional fastener is secured to the workpiece, which may prevent the fragile drive element of the single-sided fastener from breaking under the intended torque. Existing solutions result in increased cost and / or reduced performance of the fastener.

[0026] The present disclosure provides an improved fastener that includes a plurality of texture elements that provide a light texture pattern applied to a surface adjacent to a fastener head. The plurality of texture elements are thin and can be rolled or forged onto a surface adjacent to the fastener head that will contact a workpiece once installed. The plurality of texture elements will give a sealant located in a hole of the workpiece many different flow paths during the torsion of the fastener and will also create greater friction between the surfaces of the fastener and the workpiece.

[0027] Various other features of the example fasteners discussed above, and methods for making and using the fasteners, are also described below with reference to the accompanying figures.

[0028] With reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 A fastener 100 is shown according to an exemplary embodiment. Figure 1 As shown, the fastener 100 includes an elongated body 102 having a first end 104 and a second end 106 opposite the first end 104. The fastener 100 also includes a head 108 having a first surface 110 and a second surface 112 opposite the first surface 110. The first end 104 of the elongated body 102 is coupled to the second surface 112 of the head 108. In one example, the elongated body 102 and the head 108 are integrally formed as a single unit. In another example, the elongated body 102 and the head 108 are formed separately and coupled together during manufacturing. FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D As shown, the diameter 114 of the head 108 is greater than the diameter 116 of the elongated body 102. The fastener 100 also includes a sleeve 130 located on at least a portion of the elongated body 102 and the second surface 112 of the head 108. The fastener 100 also includes a plurality of texture elements 118 located on an outer surface 119 of the sleeve 130 adjacent to the second surface 112 of the head 108. One or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend from the outer surface 119 of the sleeve 130 to the first surface 110 of the head 108.

[0029] In another example, plurality of texture elements 118 may be positioned directly on second surface 112 of head 108. In such an example, one or more of plurality of texture elements 118 extend from second surface 112 of head 108 to first surface 110 of head 108.

[0030] like FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D As shown, the plurality of texture elements 118 may take a variety of forms. In particular, Figure 2A As shown, the plurality of texture elements 118 include a straight line pattern. In another example, as shown in FIG. Figure 2B As shown, the plurality of texture elements 118 include a diagonal pattern. In another example, as shown in FIG. Figure 2C As shown, the plurality of texture elements 118 include a sinusoidal line pattern. In yet another example, Figure 2D As shown, plurality of texture elements 118 includes a waffle pattern. Other patterns of plurality of texture elements 118 are possible.

[0031] As mentioned above and FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D As shown, one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend from an outer surface 119 of the sleeve 130 to the first surface 110 of the head 108. This arrangement provides a path that allows sealant to flow out from under the head 108 of the fastener 100. In one example, one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend on the outer surface of the sleeve from the first end 104 of the elongated body 102 to the first surface 110 of the head 108 of the fastener 100. This arrangement can help increase friction between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122 in the workpiece 124 to inhibit rotation of the fastener 100, as discussed in additional detail below.

[0032] In one example, if FIG. 2A to FIG. 2C As shown, each of the plurality of texture elements 118 is parallel to one another. This arrangement can provide a more uniform path for sealant to flow out from under the head 108 of the fastener 100 when installed in the hole 122 in the workpiece 124. In another example, as shown in FIG. Figure 2D As shown, one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 intersect each other. This arrangement can provide increased friction between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122 to inhibit rotation of the fastener 100 during installation. In yet another example, the plurality of texture elements 118 form a non-repeating or random pattern. Other examples are also possible.

[0033] like FIG. 2A to FIG. 2DAs shown, in one embodiment, at least a portion of the elongated body 102 includes a plurality of threads 126 defined by a plurality of crests and a plurality of roots. In one example, when in use, the plurality of threads 126 can facilitate installation of the fastener 100 by securing the elongated body 102 in the hole 122 of the workpiece 124. In addition, as shown in FIG. FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D As shown, the second surface 112 of the head 108 of the fastener 100 can taper from the first surface 110 of the head 108 to the first end 104 of the elongated body 102. The sleeve 130 can include a similar taper in the area surrounding the head 108 of the fastener 100. This arrangement can provide a sliding fit for the head 108 of the fastener 100 in the hole 122 of the workpiece 124 when the hole 122 is countersunk in the workpiece 124.

[0034] In one embodiment, the plurality of texture elements 118 include a plurality of grooves recessed into the outer surface 119 of the sleeve 130. In this example, the depth of each of the plurality of grooves is in a range of about 0.0005 inches to about 0.02 inches. When the fastener 100 is located in the hole 122 in the workpiece 124, the plurality of grooves provide multiple paths for the sealant to escape from under the second surface 112 of the head 108 of the fastener 100, thereby preventing hydraulic locking between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122. In addition, the plurality of grooves are configured to increase friction between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122 to inhibit the fastener 100 from rotating during installation.

[0035] In another embodiment, the plurality of texture elements 118 include a plurality of protrusions extending outwardly from the outer surface 119 of the sleeve 130. In such an example, the height of each of the plurality of protrusions is in a range of about 0.0005 inches to about 0.02 inches. When the fastener 100 is located in the hole 122 in the workpiece 124, the spaces between the plurality of protrusions provide multiple paths for the sealant to escape from under the head 108 of the fastener 100, thereby preventing hydraulic locking between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122. In addition, the plurality of protrusions are configured to increase friction between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 in the hole 122 to inhibit the fastener 100 from rotating during installation.

[0036] The fastener 100 may also include a drive 128 formed in the first surface 110 of the head 108. In one example, FIG. 2A to FIG. 2DAs shown, the driver portion 128 includes a frangible component that is configured to break away from the first surface 110 of the head 108 after the fastener 100 is torqued to a desired level. In another example, the driver portion 128 includes a polygonal recess formed in the first surface 110 of the head 108, which is configured to receive a corresponding polygonal driver. In yet another example, the driver portion 128 includes a plurality of radially extending grooves recessed in the first surface 110 of the head 108, which are configured to receive corresponding radially extending protrusions of the driver. In each of the above examples, the driver portion 128 provides a surface on which the corresponding driver can rotate the fastener 100, thereby installing the fastener 100 in the hole 122 of the workpiece 124.

[0037] As mentioned above, fastener 100 can take a variety of forms. In one embodiment, as FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D As shown, the fastener 100 comprises a single-sided fastener. In such an example, as described above, the fastener 100 includes a sleeve 130 located on at least a portion of the elongated body 102 and the second surface 112 of the head 108. The sleeve 130 may include a thread locking feature 132 configured to interact with the plurality of threads 126 of the elongated body 102. In use, when the drive portion 128 is rotated, a portion of the sleeve 130 is deformed and pressed against the back side of the workpiece 124, thereby securing the fastener 100 to the workpiece 124. Once the fastener 100 is torqued to the desired level, the drive portion 128 is configured to disengage from the first surface 110 of the head 108.

[0038] In another embodiment, the fastener 100 comprises a flat head fastener. In this example, the plurality of texture elements 118 may be positioned directly on the second surface 112 of the head 108, and one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend from the second surface 112 of the head 108 to the first surface 110 of the head 108. In yet another embodiment, the fastener 100 comprises a male head fastener. In such an example, the second surface 112 of the head 108 of the fastener 100 is parallel to the first surface 110 of the head 108 of the fastener 100. As with the flat head fastener embodiment, in the male head fastener example, the plurality of texture elements 118 may be positioned directly on the second surface 112 of the head 108, and one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend from the second surface 112 of the head 108 to the first surface 110 of the head 108. Other types of fasteners are also possible.

[0039] Figure 3 is a block diagram of an example of a method 200 for manufacturing a fastener. As an example, Figure 3 The method 200 shown in FIG. 1 presents a method for manufacturing the above Figures 1 to 2DThe method 200 includes one or more operations, functions, or actions as shown in one or more of the blocks 202-208. Although the blocks are shown in sequence, the blocks may also be performed in parallel and / or in a different order than described herein. Moreover, various blocks may be combined into fewer blocks, separated into additional blocks, and / or removed based on the desired implementation.

[0040] Initially, at frame 202, the method 200 includes forming an elongated body 102 having a first end 104 and a second end 106 opposite the first end 104. At frame 204, the method 200 includes forming a head 108 having a first surface 110 and a second surface 112 opposite the first surface 110. The first end 104 of the elongated body 102 is coupled to the second surface 112 of the head 108. In one example, the elongated body 102 and the head 108 are integrally formed as a single unit. In another example, the elongated body 102 and the head 108 are formed separately and coupled together during manufacturing. The diameter 114 of the head 108 is greater than the diameter 116 of the elongated body 102. [0042] In another example, method 200 may include forming a plurality of texture elements 118 on second surface 112 of head 108 of fastener 100. In such an example, one or more of plurality of texture elements 118 extend from second surface 112 of head 108 to first surface 110 of head 108.

[0043] In certain embodiments, the above Figure 3One or more steps of the described method 200 may be performed by an additive manufacturing machine, such as stereolithography, multi-jet modeling, inkjet printing, selective laser sintering / melting, and fused filament fabrication, among other possibilities. In one example, the additive manufacturing machine uses a single material to manufacture Figures 1 to 2B The fastener 100 described in any one of the above. Such materials include, for example, stainless steel, titanium, nickel super alloys, aluminum, polymer composites (e.g., carbon fiber reinforced nylon) and polymer nanocomposites (e.g., carbon nanotube filled nylon), polyetheretherketone (PEEK), polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP). In another example, the additive manufacturing process is a multi-material additive manufacturing process, so that various components of the fastener 100 are formed using materials having material properties different from other components. Other examples are also possible.

[0044] Additionally or alternatively, the above-described manufacturing process may be controlled by a non-transitory computer-readable medium. Figure 4 An example non-transitory computer-readable medium configured according to an exemplary implementation is depicted. In an exemplary implementation, the system may include one or more processors, one or more forms of memory, one or more input devices / interfaces, one or more output devices / interfaces, and machine-readable instructions that, when executed by the one or more processors, cause a manufacturing machine to create the above reference Figures 1 to 2D One or more components of any of the fasteners 100 in the described examples.

[0045] In one implementation, the exemplary computer program product 300 is provided using a signal bearing medium 302. The signal bearing medium 302 may include one or more programming instructions 304 that, when executed by one or more processors, may cause a manufacturing machine to create the above referenced Figures 1 to 2D One or more components of any fastener 100 in the described embodiments. In some examples, the signal bearing medium 302 can be a non-transitory computer readable medium 306, such as but not limited to a hard drive, a compact disk (CD), a digital video disk (DVD), a digital tape, a memory, etc. In some implementations, the signal bearing medium 302 can be a computer recordable medium 308, such as but not limited to a memory, a read / write (R / W) CD, a R / W DVD, etc. In some implementations, the signal bearing medium 302 can be a communication medium 310 (e.g., an optical cable, a waveguide, a wired communication link, etc.). Thus, for example, the signal bearing medium 302 can be transmitted by a wireless form of the communication medium 310.

[0046] The one or more programming instructions 304 may be, for example, computer-executable and / or logic-executable instructions. In addition, by providing multiple flow paths for the sealant, the plurality of texture elements 118 allow the sealant to flow out from under the head 108 of the fastener 100, thereby preventing hydraulic locking between the fastener 100 and the surface 120 of the hole 122.

[0051] In one embodiment, the method 400 further includes rotating the fastener 100 after inserting the second end 106 of the elongated body 102 of the fastener 100 into the hole 122 in the workpiece 124. In one specific example, rotating the fastener 100 includes rotating a driver 128 formed in the first surface 110 of the head 108. As described above, the driver 128 may include a frangible component configured to disengage from the first surface 110 of the head 108 after the fastener 100 is twisted to a desired level. In this example, rotating the fastener 100 may cause the sleeve 130 to deform and press against the back side of the workpiece 124, thereby fastening the fastener 100 to the workpiece. In another example, the driver 128 includes a polygonal recess formed in the first surface 110 of the head 108, the polygonal recess configured to receive a corresponding polygonal driver. In yet another example, the driver 128 includes a plurality of radially extending grooves recessed in the first surface 110 of the head 108, the plurality of radially extending grooves configured to receive corresponding radially extending protrusions of the driver.

[0052] In another example, as described above, the plurality of texture elements 118 may be positioned directly on the second surface 112 of the head 108. In such an example, one or more of the plurality of texture elements 118 extend from the second surface 112 of the head 108 to the first surface 110 of the head 108. Further, in such an example, the method 400 includes mating the second surface 112 of the head 108 of the fastener 100 to the surface 123 in the hole 122.
