Description

Background Art

[0001] Personal care compositions such as lotions typically can include one or more conventional and / or non-natural ingredients that provide skin conditioning, defoaming, and skin protection. Consumers' recent perception of non-natural ingredients has driven compositions towards more natural formulations that include naturally derived ingredients. Thus, efforts have involved reducing or eliminating non-natural ingredients from personal care compositions to provide improved consumer perception. However, it has proven particularly difficult to remove or replace non-natural ingredients for low pH formulations. For example, removing or replacing non-natural ingredients in low pH (e.g., a pH of about 4 to about 5) formulations typically results in products that exhibit instability or phase separation during aging studies.

[0002] Accordingly, there is a need for improved low pH personal care compositions and methods for preparing them. Summary of the Invention

[0087] Example 2

[0088] The stability of each of the test personal care compositions (1)-(17) prepared in Example 1 was evaluated. Specifically, the stability of each of the test personal care compositions (1)-(17) of Example 1 was evaluated by measuring or observing the pH and viscosity under various accelerated aging conditions.

[0089] To evaluate the viscosity under various accelerated aging conditions, each of the test personal care compositions (1)-(17) was placed in a corresponding glass jar and exposed to an environment maintained at specific conditions (such as time and temperature) indicated in Table 2. After the corresponding time in each study under investigation, each of the personal care compositions was removed from the environment and the personal care composition was cooled in a monitored stability chamber maintained at about 25°C. After cooling to about 25°C, the viscosity and pH were measured, and the personal care composition was visually observed / evaluated. The viscosity was measured using a Brookfield rheometer with a rotor T-93 at 10 RPM for about 1 minute.

[0090] The results of the pH and viscosity stability analyses of the test personal care compositions (1)-(17) are summarized in Tables 2 and 3, respectively. It should be understood that based on the definition of "relatively stable" disclosed herein, a personal care composition is considered relatively stable if no separation is observed and the viscosity and pH values are considered relatively stable throughout the analysis.

[0102] C Aging conditions: freeze-thaw at -10°C; 3 cycles

[0103] As shown in Tables 2 and 3, personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) remained stable by maintaining acceptable pH and viscosity values and did not exhibit any phase separation under various accelerated aging conditions. It was observed that the physical properties of personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) also remained unchanged under various accelerated aging conditions. Specifically, the color, odor, and appearance of personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) remained unchanged throughout the various accelerated aging conditions.

[0104] It should be understood that personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) all contain approximately 4% cetearyl alcohol and ceteth-20 and approximately 3.5% cetyl alcohol.

[0105] As indicated above, personal care composition (3) contains approximately 3% by weight of stearyl alcohol, which results in a combined total fatty alcohol content of approximately 6.5% of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol. Personal care composition (3) also contains approximately 1.5% by weight of isopropyl palmitate.

[0106] Personal care composition (11) contains approximately 1.5% by weight of stearyl alcohol and approximately 3.5% by weight of cetyl alcohol, thereby providing a total fatty alcohol of approximately 5%. Personal care composition (11) also contains approximately 1.5% by weight of isopropyl palmitate.

[0107] Personal care composition (17) contains approximately 3% by weight of stearyl alcohol and approximately 3.5% by weight of cetyl alcohol, thereby providing a total fatty alcohol of approximately 6.5%. Personal care composition (11) also contains approximately 1.5% by weight of isopropyl palmitate.

[0108] Surprisingly, it was found that personal care composition (17) is the only stable personal care composition that contains approximately 4% by weight of isopropyl palmitate.

[0109] Surprisingly and unexpectedly, it has been found that a stable personal care composition having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared when the primary emulsifiers, cetearyl alcohol and cetearyl ethoxylate-20, are present in an amount of about 4%, the combined amount of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol is present in an amount greater than or equal to about 5%, and cetyl alcohol is present in an amount of 3.5% or greater. It has also been surprisingly and unexpectedly found that a stable personal care composition having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared when isopropyl palmitate is present in an amount of about or at least 1.5%. Further surprisingly and unexpectedly, it has been found that if isopropyl palmitate is present in an amount of about 4%, then a stable personal care composition having a pH of from about 4 to about 5 can be prepared by providing a total amount of cetyl alcohol and stearyl alcohol of about 6.5% or greater and / or an amount of cetearyl alcohol / cetearyl ethoxylate-20 of about 4% or greater.

[0110] Example 3

[0111] Whiteness, absorbency, spreadability, tackiness, and greasiness were also evaluated. To evaluate whiteness, absorbency, tackiness, spreadability, and greasiness, a sensory evaluation panel consisting of ten panelists who evaluated sensory properties was used. Each of the ten panelists evaluated each of the test personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) using a standardized method and a 0 to 5 point rating scale, where '0' represents the lowest level (i.e., none or low) and '5' represents the highest value. A controlled amount of each of the test personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) was used for analysis. The results of the analysis of the sensory properties of personal care compositions (3), (11), and (17) are summarized in Table 4.
