Abstract
Description
Technical Field
[0001] The present invention relates to automotive lighting or signaling devices, and more particularly to automotive lighting or signaling devices having an associated light guide unit. Background Art
[0002] Original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and many component / system suppliers continue to strive to improve the lighting efficiency and uniformity of vehicle lamps. Of particular interest is the desire to obtain a lighting appearance of a lit area with enhanced uniformity or a lighting appearance of a uniform light emission area by using a single light source. The present invention is one such innovative solution to provide an optical device arrangement that can produce a lit area with enhanced uniformity by using a single light source.
[0003] In the field of automotive lighting and light signal units, light sources based on light emitting semiconductor components, such as light emitting diodes (LEDs), are increasingly being used. The light emitted by the LED can be coupled to a light guide in any known suitable manner. Light guides are used for exterior vehicle lighting applications and various other applications. The light beam emitted by the LED typically enters the light guide via an incident surface and leaves the light guide through an exit surface. Between the incident surface and the exit surface, a reflective element positioned inside the light guide is typically used to guide the light generated by the LED within the light guide. The light guide can be curved or straight. The light guide can also be oriented vertically or horizontally.
[0004] When the light guide is curved in shape, achieving a uniform lighting appearance at the light exit surface is a difficult challenge. In addition, when the light guide is oriented vertically, it is often a difficult challenge to position the light source to face the optical axis of the light guide due to packaging limitations. To typically address these shortcomings, conventional light guide systems employ multiple light sources and multiple couplers to increase uniformity and enhance the light emission area in order to meet road-specified lighting or signaling functional requirements. However, the use of multiple light sources and couplers for performing such optical functions continues and still presents challenges to space limitations in the design of motor vehicle lighting devices.

[0006] US 7,639,918 B2 and US 7,686,497 B2; US Publication US2015 0233 539A1, are incorporated herein by reference for all purposes.
[0007] Therefore, among the various objects achieved by the present invention, one object is to achieve optical efficiency and enhanced control of light effects compared to the alternative of using optical films or diffuse materials to achieve lighting effects at the expense of a less desirable appearance. Another object is to enhance the control of lighting effects to meet specified brightness intensity requirements. And, another object is to utilize a single light source single optical coupler arrangement or a minimized optical coupler arrangement within a restricted light guide space system to effectively affect a uniform light distribution appearance at the lit exit surface. Another object is to achieve a brightness photometric value of ninety percent (90%) or a brightness photometric value within ten percent (10%) of the brightness variation consistently achieved on the light emitting surface or the lit exit surface. The present invention herein overcomes one or more of these known problems and shortcomings in the design and implementation of associated light guide devices in the automotive field. DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0019] The present invention provides an automotive lighting and / or signaling device that can produce a uniformly enhanced lit area appearance or light emitting area appearance by effectively using a single light source and a single coupler or a single light coupling reflector.
[0020] This disclosure is particularly concerned with and primarily focuses on providing a Figure 1A The lighting system arrangement or light guide assembly shown. Figure 1A A perspective view of a light guide assembly for a motor vehicle according to the invention is shown.
[0021] Unless defined otherwise, all technical and scientific terms used herein have the same meaning as commonly understood by one of ordinary skill in the art to which this technology belongs.
[0022] Figure 1A A light guide component 100 is shown, which includes: a light guide 105, which includes a light receiving surface 110, a light reflecting surface 115, a light emitting surface side or an exit surface 120 arranged opposite to the light reflecting surface 115; a light emitter 125, which connects the light reflecting surface 115 and the light emitting surface side 120; a light source 1 and a coupler 130.
[0023] It is contemplated that the relationship between the associated components and component assemblies (e.g., at least geometrical properties and material properties) is unexpectedly important in solving one or more of the problems described in the background section above. Each of the components and component assemblies and the relationship between the components and component assemblies are disclosed in more detail and detail in the following paragraphs.
[0024] Light Source 1
[0025] Light source refers to a visually perceived electromagnetic radiation source or an excited source of visually perceived radiant energy (including "visible" light within the electromagnetic spectrum), but can include a wide combination or range of electromagnetic energy or radiant energy (including X-rays, ultraviolet and infrared light, microwave spectrum, and radio wave spectrum). Light sources can include all conventional and suitable lighting element sources, such as filament-based lamps or incandescent lamps, fluorescent lamps, arc or gas discharge type lamps, light emitting diodes (LEDs), or other suitable conventional light sources.
[0026] The light source 1 preferably includes one or more light emitting diodes (LEDs), however, other light sources may be used without exceeding the spirit and scope of the present invention. The light source is arranged at a predetermined point relative to the light guide. The light source is positioned in such a way that light from the light source enters the light guide parallel to the longitudinal axis of the light guide. In the example, the light source is arranged on a printed circuit board (PCB) 133 (but not shown in the figure). PCB 133 is used to power the light source, and to control and carry the light source. It should be noted that the light emission axis L from the light source 1 is perpendicular to the optical axis OA of the light guide 105. In an embodiment, the light source is positioned at the light receiving surface 110 of the light guide 105 and close to the light reflecting surface 110.
[0027] Coupler 130
[0028] The coupler 130 or light coupling reflector functions to collect ambient generated light and distribute or redirect such associated generated light in a specific manner or in a specific direction (specific point, location, random direction or a determined target area) using the coupler's (multiple) reflective surface(s).
[0029] The coupler 130 is adapted to transmit light from the light source 1 towards the light guide 105. Figure 1AAs shown, the light guide assembly 100 includes a single coupler that is positioned at the light receiving face 110 of the light guide 105. Therefore, it should be understood that the coupler 130 is associated with the light receiving face 110 of the light guide 105. In an embodiment, the coupler 130 is positioned proximate to the light reflecting face 115. In turn, the distance that the light 145 travels between the coupler 130 and the light emitting face side 120 is greater than the distance that the light 145 travels between the coupler 130 and the light reflecting face 115. In addition, the reference axis of the coupler 130 is oriented to be aligned with the light receiving face 110 of the light guide 105. Figure 1A and Figure 3A The light guide 105 is aligned with the direction of the longitudinal axis L shown in the depicted light guide 105. The coupler 130 may include collimating optics or a collimator (not shown in the figure) to produce a collimated light beam 11. The coupler 130 is arranged to receive a light beam 145 from the light source 1 and collimate the received light beam to produce the collimated light beam 11, so that the light 145 enters the light guide 105 parallel to the longitudinal axis L referenced within the light guide 105. In an embodiment, the width-thickness of the light emitter 125 of the light guide 105 may be the same as the width-thickness of the coupler 130. In an embodiment, the coupler 130 and the light guide 105 may be formed as a single piece. In another embodiment, the coupler 130 and the light guide 105 may be formed as two separate pieces.
[0030] Light Guide 105
[0031] The light guide 105, which may be a fine component of the light emitting medium 125, acts as a material body through which light waves (including electromagnetic particles or light waves with spectral variations) pass. For example, the light waves travel through or through a guiding material or "medium" material. The light guide 105 can be constructed or formed from a unitized, integral component body or from a combination of component body components. The material of the light emitting medium 125 can include a rigid body, or a material body with varying flexibility, or a material body with relative elasticity or a gel rubber material. The light emitting medium 105 can be formed from simple geometric shapes or custom shapes, and can include various colorants or additional features that can interfere with light transmission at various levels, but still allow light transmission through the "medium" body to various degrees.
[0032] The light guide 105 is in the form of a sheet. The term 'sheet' is understood to mean a shape defined by two faces in the thickness direction, the two faces being substantially parallel to one another over at least a portion of the shape. The shape of the sheet itself may have a non-planar shape. The light guide 105 has an elongated light emitter 125 constructed of a light-transmitting material. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the light guide is preferably made of transparent plastic by injection molding. Figure 1AAs shown, according to a preferred embodiment of the present invention, the light guide 105 may be in a curved form. In an embodiment, the light guide 105 may be monolithic or in other words formed from a single piece, for example molded from a plastic material.
[0033] The light guide 105 includes a light receiving surface 110, a light emitter 125, a light reflecting surface 115, and a light emitting surface side or exit surface 120 disposed opposite the light reflecting surface 110. The light receiving surface 110 is adapted to receive light 145 from the light source 1. In an embodiment, the light guide 105 may conform to an S-shaped shape. However, the present invention is not limited to light guides of an S-shaped shape. Instead, according to the present invention, the light guide 105 may be any curved shape that can produce a uniform or uniformly lit appearance by using a single coupler and a single light source.
[0034] In an embodiment, the width of the light guide 105 may gradually decrease in a curved manner from the light receiving face 110 of the light guide to a face opposite to the light receiving face 110 .
[0035] The light reflecting surface 115 is formed on the side surface of the light emitting body 125. The light reflecting surface 115 of the light guide assembly 100 includes a stepped reflecting surface ( Figure 1B depicted).
[0036] like Figure 1A and Figure 1B As shown, the light reflecting facets 135 and the lateral surfaces 140 can be arranged alternately along the lateral surfaces of the light emitter 125 across the direction of the longitudinal axis L. The plurality of reflecting facets 135 serve an optical function and include angled surfaces. The reflecting facets 135 are preferably at a 45 degree angle relative to the light emission axis L aligned with the light source 1, but the reflecting facets can be oriented substantially at 45 degrees or in the range of 42 to 48 degrees so that light rays incident thereon will have total internal reflection (TIR) through the light reflecting facets 135 via light transmission back through the light emitter 125 and exit the light guide 105 through the light emitting surface side 120. In another embodiment, the light reflecting facets 135 can represent angled surfaces oriented at any other angle, which results in the incident light rays being TIR at the light reflecting surface 115 when traveling in the direction of the longitudinal axis L or the optical axis OA.
[0037] Furthermore, the plurality of lateral surfaces 140 are optically non-functional and parallel to the light emission axis L, such that the lateral surfaces 140 generally do not reflect light along the optical axis OA.
[0038] In an embodiment, the length of each reflective facet 135 and the length of each lateral surface 140 may be the same along the longitudinal axis L of the light guide 105. In another embodiment, the length of each reflective facet 135 and the length of each lateral surface 140 may be different and may vary along the longitudinal axis L of the light guide 105.
[0039] In an embodiment, the reflective facets 135 and the lateral surfaces 140 are densely placed at the end portions 115a, 115c of the light reflecting surface 115 compared to the middle portion 115b of the light reflecting surface. Figure 2 , several light reflecting facets 135 are configured to collect collimated light beam portions at the middle portion 115b with a luminous intensity amount less than the luminous intensity amount of the collimated light beam portions from several reflecting facets 135 of the end portions 115a and 115c. In addition, the middle portion 115b is configured to receive the collimated light beam with a luminous intensity value that is higher than the luminous intensity value of the collimated light beam received at the end portions 115a and 115c. In an embodiment, the end portions 115a, 115c and the middle portion 115b can have the same length. In another embodiment, the middle portion 115b can have a longer dimension compared to the length of each end portion 115a, 115c. However, in another embodiment, the end portions 115a, 115c can each have the same length. In addition, in another embodiment, the end portions 115a, 115c can each have a different length.
[0040] In an embodiment, the light emitting surface side 120 is adapted to receive a collimated light beam 11 from the light reflecting surface 115. The collimated light beam 11 directed toward the light emitting surface side 120 is at a 90 degree angle relative to the collimated light beam 11 received on the plurality of light reflecting facets 135. The light emitting surface 120 is provided with a plurality of exit facets 150 along the longitudinal axis L. The plurality of exit facets 150 are at a 90 degree angle relative to the optical axis OA of the light guide 105 and can be oriented substantially at 90 degrees. However, the present invention is not limited to facets at 90 degrees relative to the optical axis OA of the light guide 105. In addition, the light emitting surface or exit surface 120 preferably includes facets formed in a stepped facet arrangement 200 that can vary from coarse step sizes to fine step sizes anywhere along the light emitting surface 120 according to the appropriate needs for specialized light emission effects or manufacturing enhancements.
[0041] Due to the configuration of the light guide 105 and the coupler 130 described above, the light distribution width on the light emitting surface side 120 is larger than the distribution width range of the light beam from the light source.
[0042] Optical axis OA
[0043] The optical axis OA serves as a reference axis defining the main optical path along which light propagates through the optical system, along which there is a certain degree of rotational symmetry.
[0044] The term "optical axis" is used herein to refer to an imaginary line or plane that defines the path along which light propagates.
[0045] Longitudinal axis L
[0046] The longitudinal axis L serves as a reference axis defining a main light path along which light propagates in the direction from the single point light source 1 to the target point. The longitudinal axis is the direction in which collimated light is generally received in the light guide 105.
[0047] Figure 3A and Figure 3B Describes in more detail Figure 1A The operation of the light guide assembly 100 is shown. Figure 3B The path of a light ray 145 from a portion of the light reflecting surface 115 is shown. Figure 3A The path of a light ray 145 produced during operation by the light guide assembly 100 depicted in the associated illustration according to the present invention is shown. The path of the light ray is shown by reference numeral 145 in a general manner.
[0048] In operation, light rays or beams 145 emitted by the light source 1 are collimated by the coupler 130 to produce a collimated light beam 11. The collimated light beam 11 is then transmitted along the longitudinal axis L of the light guide 105 towards the light reflecting surface 115. The light reflecting facets 135 are adapted to receive the collimated light beam and direct the collimated light beam 11 via the light emitter 125 of the light guide 105 towards the light emitting face side or exit face 120 of the light guide 105. In an embodiment, these reflective facets 135 are substantially at a 45 degree angle so that light rays incident thereon will return through the light emitter 125 and exit the light guide 105 through the light emitting face side 120 of the light guide 105 while being totally internally reflected by the light reflecting facets 135.
[0049] As previously discussed, the middle portion 115b of the light reflecting surface 115 is configured to receive the collimated light beam and has a luminous intensity value that is higher than the luminous intensity value of the collimated light beam received at the end portions 115a, 115c of the light reflecting surface 115. Therefore, by receiving the collimated light beam with varying luminous intensities at different portions of the light reflecting surface 115, the light beam is evenly distributed along the light emitting surface side 120 of the light guide 105.
[0050] Thus, with the light guide assembly 105 of the present invention, a uniform or evenly distributed light beam is generated at the curved shape of the light guide along the light emitting or exiting face 120 by using a single coupler and a single light source.
[0051] Although the present disclosure is provided with reference to the accompanying drawings, all embodiments shown in the accompanying drawings are intended to explain the preferred embodiments of the present invention by way of example and are not intended to limit the present invention.
[0052] Those skilled in the art should understand that various changes or modifications may be made to the present disclosure without departing from the principles and spirit of the present disclosure, and as long as these changes or modifications fall within the scope defined by the claims and their equivalents, these changes or modifications are intended to be covered by the present invention.
[0053] Any numerical value cited herein includes all values from the lower value to the higher value in increments of one unit, provided that there is an interval of at least 2 units between any lower value and any higher value. For example, if the value of the amount of a component or a process variable (e.g., temperature, pressure, time, etc.) is, for example, from 1 to 90, preferably from 20 to 80, more preferably from 30 to 70, it is intended to explicitly list values such as 15 to 85, 22 to 68, 43 to 51, 30 to 32, etc. in this specification. For values less than one, one unit is considered to be 0.0001, 0.001, 0.01 or 0.1 as appropriate. These are examples of specific intent only, and all possible numerical combinations between the lowest and highest values listed will be considered to be explicitly stated in this application in a similar manner.
[0054] Unless otherwise stated, all ranges include both endpoints and all numbers between the endpoints. The use of "about" or "approximately" in conjunction with a range applies to both ends of the range. Thus, "about 20 to 30" is intended to cover "about 20 to about 30", including at least the specific endpoints.
