Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to hair care compositions, particularly hair care compositions comprising an amino acid surfactant, a specific anionic surfactant, and an anti-dandruff agent, which provide enhanced deposition of the anti-dandruff agent on the hair and / or scalp of an individual. Background Art

[0002] Hair care compositions are formulated for a specific purpose, such as cleaning or conditioning benefits or a combination of both. Preferred hair care compositions will provide more benefits than simple cleaning and conditioning. For example, there is an increasing demand for hair care compositions that are mild and also have anti-dandruff benefits.

[0003] Dandruff is a problem that affects many people worldwide. This condition manifests itself as clumps of dead skin cells falling off the scalp. They are white and present an aesthetically unpleasant appearance. The factors that cause dandruff are certain members of the Malassezia genus yeast. To combat dandruff, anti-dandruff products have included certain anti-dandruff agents with antifungal activity, such as piroctone olamine Azole-based antifungal agents (e.g., climbazole, ketoconazole), selenium sulfide, or combinations thereof. However, many anti-dandruff hair care compositions fail to provide adequate anti-dandruff agent deposition during excessive rinsing. The anti-dandruff agent is simply rinsed off, thereby providing little or no anti-dandruff benefit. Therefore, it is always desirable to effectively deposit the anti-dandruff agent onto the hair and / or scalp to provide good anti-dandruff performance.

[0004] Anionic surfactants such as sulfate surfactants are often incorporated into hair care compositions to obtain excellent cleaning and foaming properties. However, sulfate surfactants such as sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) tend to be irritating to the skin and may adversely affect the deposition of anti-dandruff agents. One method of providing mildness is to use mild anionic surfactants. Among these mild anionic surfactants, N-acyl amino acids and their salts may be used. Such acyl amino acids are considered as co-surfactants to reduce the irritation of the primary anionic surfactant, as seen in U.S. Pat. No. 6,703,427.

[0005] It has been unexpectedly discovered that compositions comprising a specific combination of acyl glycinates and ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactants can provide enhanced deposition of anti-dandruff agents while maintaining desirable mildness. Summary of the invention

[0010] In a second aspect, the present invention relates to a packaged hair care product comprising a hair care composition according to the first aspect of the present invention.

[0011] In a third aspect, the present invention is directed to a method of depositing an anti-dandruff agent onto the scalp, the method comprising the step of applying a hair care composition according to any embodiment of the first aspect of the present invention onto the surface of the scalp of an individual.

[0012]

[0013] All further aspects of the invention will become more readily apparent by consideration of the following detailed description and examples. DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0013] Except in the examples or where otherwise expressly indicated, all numbers in this description indicating amounts of material or reaction conditions, physical properties of materials and / or use may optionally be understood as being modified by the word "about".

[0014] Unless otherwise specified, all amounts are by weight of the final hair care composition. It should be noted that in specifying any range of values, any particular upper value can be associated with any particular lower value.

[0015] For the avoidance of doubt, the word "comprising" is intended to mean "including" but not necessarily "consisting of" or "composed of." In other words, the listed steps or options need not be exhaustive.

[0016] The disclosure of the invention found herein is deemed to cover all embodiments found in the claims, if these embodiments are multiply dependent on each other, despite the fact that the claims may be found without multiple dependence or redundancy.

[0017] If features are disclosed with respect to a particular aspect of the invention (eg, a composition of the invention), such disclosure is also considered applicable mutatis mutandis to any other aspect of the invention (eg, a method of the invention).

[0018] As used herein, "hair care composition" is intended to include compositions for topical application to the hair and / or scalp of mammals, especially humans. Such compositions can generally be classified as leave-on or rinse-off, and include any product that is applied to the human body to improve appearance, cleanliness, odor control, or general aesthetics. The composition of the present invention may be in the form of a liquid, lotion, cream, foam, scrub, gel, or bar. Non-limiting examples of such compositions include leave-on hair washes, creams, and rinse-off shampoos, conditioners, shower gels, or cleansing soap bars. The composition of the present invention is preferably a rinse-off composition, particularly preferably a shampoo or conditioner, and most preferably a shampoo.

[0019] Salts of acyl glycinates are amino acid based surfactants derived from the amino acid glycine. Glycine is the smallest of the naturally occurring amino acids. This small size facilitates the production of smaller surfactant micelles and the generation of a creamy foam during use. Salts of acyl glycinates suitable for use in the compositions of the present invention have the general formula (I):

[0020]

[0021] Where R 1 is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 7 to 23 carbons, preferably 9 to 17 carbons, and X is a solubilizing cation including sodium, potassium, ammonium, substituted ammonium or a mixture thereof. Preferably the cation is sodium or potassium, more preferably sodium.

[0022] Suitable examples of the salts of acyl glycine that can be used in the present invention include, but are not limited to, sodium capryloyl glycine, sodium cocoyl glycine, sodium lauroyl glycine, sodium myristoyl glycine, sodium palmitoyl glycine, sodium stearoyl glycine, sodium oleoyl glycine, potassium capryloyl glycine, potassium cocoyl glycine, potassium lauroyl glycine, potassium myristoyl glycine, or mixtures thereof. Particularly preferably, the salt of acyl glycine is sodium cocoyl glycine, sodium lauroyl glycine, or mixtures thereof.

[0023] The salt of acyl glycine is generally present in an amount of 0.1 to 20%, more preferably 0.5 to 10%, and most preferably 1 to 5% by weight of the hair care composition, based on the total weight of the composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein.

[0024] The hair care composition of the present invention comprises an ethoxylated anionic surfactant having the formula R 2 O(CH2CH2O) n SO3M ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant, wherein R 2is an alkyl or alkenyl group having 8 to 18 (preferably 12 to 18) carbon atoms, M is a solubilizing cation including sodium, potassium, ammonium, substituted ammonium or mixtures thereof, and n is a degree of ethoxylation of 0.5 to 3, preferably 1 to 3. An example is sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES).

[0025] As used herein, "degree of ethoxylation" refers to the average number of moles of ethylene oxide units per mole of ethoxylated product. 1 The degree of ethoxylation is measured by H NMR in deuterium oxide (D2O) solvents. For example, 1 H NMR (Bruker-Biospin, 400MHz) measures the degree of ethoxylation of sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and records the spectrum at 25°C. The sample for measurement using NMR was prepared as follows: the sample was dispersed in D2O in a centrifuge tube and sonicated, and the solution was then filtered and transferred to an NMR tube. The peaks corresponding to the protons of the sample appeared at about 3.98ppm, about 4.15ppm, and between about 3.58 and about 3.84ppm. The peaks corresponding to the protons of -CH2- (which appeared at about 4.15ppm and about 3.98ppm) were integrated as A1. The peaks corresponding to the four protons of -OCH2CH2- (which appeared at 4.15ppm and between about 3.58 and about 3.84ppm) were also integrated as A2. The degree of ethoxylation of SLES can be calculated as follows:

[0026]

[0027] A preferred ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant is sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) having a degree of ethoxylation of 0.5-3, preferably 1-3.

[0028] The ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant is typically present in an amount of 0.1 to 45%, more preferably 1 to 30%, and most preferably 5 to 20% by weight of the hair care composition, based on the total weight of the hair care composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein.

[0029] The pH of the hair care composition is preferably equal to or higher than 4.0, more preferably 4.0 to 7.0, still more preferably 4.0 to 6.0, and most preferably 4.0 to 5.0. The salts of acyl glycine are difficult to dissolve in the lower pH range because the molecules will tend to precipitate. In order to formulate a homogeneous composition with good fluidity, it is preferred that the amount of acyl glycine salt in the composition is equal to or lower than the amount of ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant. The composition of the present invention comprises the salt of acyl glycine and the ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactant in a weight ratio of 1:10 to 1:1, preferably 1:8 to 1:1, and more preferably 1:6 to 1:1.5, most preferably 1:5.5 to 1:2.25, including all ratios contained therein.

[0030] The hair care composition also comprises an anti-dandruff agent, which is a compound active against dandruff and is typically an antimicrobial agent, preferably an antifungal agent. Suitable anti-dandruff agents for use in the present invention are selected from piroctone olamine Azole-based antifungal agents and mixtures thereof.

[0031] Without wishing to be bound by theory, the inventors believe that the compositions of the present invention can be used for deposition of piroctone olamine-based or azole-based antifungals because both can be stabilized and dissolved in micelles and can improve deposition by reducing the solubility of the active in the system.

[0032] Preferred azole-based antifungal agents are ketoconazole, climbazole or mixtures thereof.Preferably, the antidandruff agent is selected from piroctone olamine, climbazole and mixtures thereof. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the antidandruff agent is piroctone olamine.

[0033] The hair care compositions of the present invention typically comprise anti-dandruff agents in an amount of 0.01 to 10%, more preferably 0.01 to 5%, still more preferably 0.05 to 2%, and most preferably 0.05 to 1.5%, based on the total weight of the hair care composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein.

[0034] In addition to the salts of acyl glycinates and ethoxylated alkyl sulfate anionic surfactants, the hair care composition preferably also comprises further surfactants.

[0035] Examples of suitable anionic surfactants include alkyl sulfates, alkylaryl sulfonates, alkanoyl isethionates, alkyl succinates, alkyl sulfosuccinates, alkyl ether sulfosuccinates, N-alkyl sarcosinates, alkyl phosphates, alkyl ether phosphates and alkyl ether carboxylic acids and salts thereof, particularly the sodium, magnesium, ammonium and monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine salts thereof. The alkyl and acyl groups typically contain 8 to 18, preferably 10 to 16 carbon atoms, and may be unsaturated. The alkyl ether sulfosuccinates, alkyl ether phosphates and alkyl ether carboxylic acids and salts thereof may contain 1 to 20 ethylene oxide or propylene oxide units per molecule. Mixtures of any of the foregoing anionic surfactants may also be suitable. Typically, the total amount of other anionic surfactants in the hair care composition of the present invention is from 0.5 to 45%, more preferably from 1.5 to 35%, and most preferably from 5 to 20%, based on the total weight of the hair care composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein.

[0036] The hair care composition may further comprise a nonionic surfactant, which may be included in an amount of 0.1 to 10%, preferably 0.5 to 8%, more preferably 1 to 5%, based on the total weight of the hair care composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein. Examples of suitable nonionic surfactants include aliphatic (C8-C 18 ) condensation products of primary or secondary straight or branched chain alcohols or phenols with an alkylene oxide, typically ethylene oxide and typically having from 6 to 30 ethylene oxide groups. Preferred are alkyl ethoxylates, more preferably having the formula R 3 -(OCH2CH2) m OH alkyl ethoxylates, where R 3 is an alkyl chain having 12 to 15 carbon atoms and m is 5 to 9.

[0041] The hair care composition may also include an amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactant in an amount of 0.1 to 10%, preferably 0.5 to 8%, more preferably 1 to 5%, based on the total weight of the hair care composition, and including all ranges subsumed therein. Examples include alkylamine oxides, alkyl betaines, alkylamidopropyl betaines, alkyl sultaines (sultaines), alkyl amphoacetates, alkyl amphopropionates, alkylamidopropyl hydroxysultaines, wherein the alkyl group has 8 to 19 carbon atoms. Preferably, the co-surfactant is a betaine surfactant. Typical amphoteric and zwitterionic surfactants for use in the present invention include lauramine oxide, cocodimethyl sulphopropyl betaine, lauryl betaine, cocamidopropyl betaine and sodium cocoamphoacetate. Cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB) is particularly preferred.

[0042] Mixtures of any of the aforementioned amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants may also be suitable. Preferred mixtures are mixtures of cocamidopropyl betaine with other amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants as described above. A further preferred amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactant is sodium cocoamphoacetate.

[0043] The composition may also contain a cationic polymer. Suitable cationic polymers may be homopolymers or may be formed from two or more types of monomers. [0044] The polymer will have cationic nitrogen-containing groups, such as quaternary ammonium or protonated amino groups or mixtures thereof. The cationic nitrogen-containing groups are typically present as substituents on a portion of the total monomer units of the cationic polymer. Thus, when the polymer is not a homopolymer, it may contain intervening non-cationic monomer units. The ratio of cationic to non-cationic monomer units is selected to obtain a polymer having a cationic charge density within the desired range.

[0045] Suitable cationic polymers include, for example, copolymers of vinyl monomers having cationic amine or quaternary ammonium functional groups and water-soluble spacer monomers such as (meth)acrylamide, alkyl and dialkyl (meth)acrylamides, alkyl (meth)acrylates, vinyl caprolactone and vinyl pyrrolidine. The alkyl and dialkyl substituted monomers preferably have C1-C7 alkyl groups, more preferably C1-C3 alkyl groups. Such a cationic polysaccharide polymer preferably has a cationic charge density of from 0.1 to 4 meq / g.

[0047] Cationic polysaccharide polymers suitable for use in the compositions of the present invention include those represented by the following general formula:

[0048] AO-[R 5 -N + (R 6 )(R 7 )(R 8 )X - ]

[0049] Wherein: A is an anhydroglucose residue, such as an anhydroglucose residue of starch or cellulose. 5 R is an alkylene group, an oxyalkylene group, a polyoxyalkylene group or a hydroxyalkylene group or a combination thereof. 6 , R 7 and R 8 independently represents an alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, alkoxyalkyl or alkoxyaryl group, each containing up to about 18 carbon atoms. The total number of carbon atoms in each cationic moiety (i.e., R 6 , R 7 and R 8 The total number of carbon atoms in (i) is preferably about 20 or less, and X is an anionic counterion.

[0055] The hair care composition may additionally comprise a conditioning agent to provide conditioning benefits. Typically, the most commonly used conditioning agents used in hair care compositions are water-insoluble oily materials such as mineral oil, naturally occurring oils such as triglycerides and silicone polymers. The conditioning benefit is achieved by depositing the oily material onto the hair resulting in the formation of a film, which makes the hair easier to comb when wet and more manageable when dry. Preferably, the conditioning agent is non-volatile, meaning that it has a vapor pressure of less than 1000 Pa at 25°C.

[0056] Preferably, the hair care composition comprises discrete dispersed droplets of the water-insoluble conditioning agent having an average droplet diameter (D ) of less than 15 microns, preferably less than 10 microns, more preferably less than 5 microns, most preferably less than 3 microns. 3,2 The average droplet diameter of the water-insoluble conditioning agent (D 3,2 ) can be measured by laser scattering techniques, for example using a 2600D particle size analyzer from Malvern Instruments.

[0078] a. Commercial guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, having a weight average molecular weight of 1 to 1.5 million g / mol and a degree of substitution of 0.16 to 0.20, available from Lamberti.

[0079] b. Commercial dimethiconol from Dow Silicones Corporation having a particle size of 0.2 μm.

[0080] c. Commercial polydimethylsiloxane from Dow Silicones Corporation having a particle size of 10 μm.

[0081] method

[0082] Citric acid is added to the sample to adjust the pH to 4.3. On artificial skin (VITRO-SKIN from IMS test group), about 0.2 gram of test sample is taken. It is diluted with 1.8 mL of water and rubbed with a plastic stick for 30 seconds. Then rinse the surface of the artificial skin twice with water, rinse with 4 mL of water for 30 seconds for the first time, and then rinse with 4 mL of water for 30 seconds. Use HPLC method to measure the deposition of piroctone olamine on the skin (10.75 cm 2 / plate).

[0083] result

[0084] The average deposition (five replicates) is reported in Table 2 (errors represent standard deviations of replicate measurements).

[0085] Table 2

[0086]

[0087] The results showed that samples 2 to 5 comprising a combination of acyl glycinate and sodium lauryl ether sulfate provided significantly better (p<0.01) deposition of piroctone olamine compared to sample 1 comprising sodium lauryl ether sulfate alone (used as a control).

[0088] Attempts were made to formulate samples with higher amounts of acyl glycinate, however the samples proved to be inhomogeneous with solid precipitation and very low flowability.
