[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

[0002] This patent application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 084,441, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR ADAPTATIVELY REQUESTING ON-DEMAND SYSTEM INFORMATION,” filed by LEI et al. on September 28, 2020, and U.S. Patent Application No. 17 / 466,915, entitled “TECHNIQUES FOR ADAPTATIVELY REQUESTING ON-DEMAND SYSTEM INFORMATION,” filed by LEI et al. on September 3, 2021; each of the above applications is assigned to the assignee of this application. Technical Field

[0003] The following relates to wireless communications, including techniques for adaptively requesting on-demand system information (ODSI). Background Art

[0004] Wireless communication systems are widely deployed to provide various types of communication content such as voice, video, packet data, messaging, broadcasting, etc. These systems may be able to support communication with multiple users by sharing available system resources (e.g., time, frequency, and power). Examples of such multiple access systems include fourth generation (4G) systems (e.g., long term evolution (LTE) systems, improved LTE (LTE-A) systems, or LTE-A Pro systems) and fifth generation (5G) systems (which may be referred to as new radio (NR) systems). These systems may employ techniques such as code division multiple access (CDMA), time division multiple access (TDMA), frequency division multiple access (FDMA), orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA), or discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S-OFDM). A wireless multiple access communication system may include one or more base stations or one or more network access nodes, each base station or network access node simultaneously supporting communication for multiple communication devices (which may be further referred to as user equipment (UE)).

[0005] In some wireless communication systems, a base station may be configured to support both regular, full-capability UEs (e.g., full-bandwidth UEs) and reduced-capability UEs (e.g., reduced-bandwidth UEs). Due to the reduced bandwidth capabilities, the reduced-capability UEs may not be able to receive system information (e.g., master information blocks (MIBs) or system information blocks (SIBs)) broadcasted by the network using a bandwidth that the regular, full-capability UEs can receive. Summary of the invention

[0006] The described technology relates to improved methods, systems, devices and apparatuses for supporting technology for adaptively requesting on-demand system information (ODSI). In general, the described technology relates to signaling that can be used to indicate whether system information for a user equipment (UE) with reduced capabilities can be broadcast on demand. For example, a UE with reduced capabilities can receive first system information for a UE with reduced capabilities or reduced bandwidth (RB). The first system information may include a system information block (RB-SIB1) with reduced bandwidth or a master information block (RB-MIB) with reduced bandwidth, each of which may be received within a synchronization signal block (RB-SSB) with reduced bandwidth. Upon receiving the first system information, the UE may determine whether the first system information includes a dedicated field indicating whether additional system information (e.g., RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) for the UE with reduced capabilities can be received in response to an on-demand request. If a dedicated field is included in the first system information, the UE may determine whether the additional system information can be received in response to an on-demand request based on the dedicated field. Alternatively, if the dedicated field is not included in the first system information, the UE may determine whether additional system information is receivable in response to an on-demand request based on the configuration information element of the first system information. In this regard, the dedicated field may be used as an efficient early indicator of whether the network is configured for ODSI.

[0098] In some wireless communication systems, a base station may be configured to support conventional, full-capability user equipment (UE) (e.g., full bandwidth UE) and UE with reduced capabilities. UE with reduced capabilities may include UEs with bandwidth capabilities below a given threshold, and therefore may include UEs that communicate on reduced bandwidths (RBs) compared to full-capability UEs. Due to reduced bandwidth capabilities, UEs with reduced capabilities may not be able to receive system information (e.g., master information block (MIB), system information block (SIB)) broadcasted by the network using a bandwidth (e.g., bandwidth part (BWP)) that can be received by conventional, full-capability UEs. In order to enable UEs with reduced capabilities to receive system information, the base station may selectively adjust the bandwidth or other parameters used to send system information so that both full-capability UEs and UEs with reduced capabilities can receive the same system information. However, broadcasting system information on a smaller bandwidth may result in inefficient use of resources and increase power consumption at the base station. Additionally or alternatively, the base station may send conventional system information for full-capability UEs and bandwidth-reduced system information for UEs with reduced capabilities. However, sending separate system information may result in increased network overhead and resource congestion. Furthermore, in situations where there are few or no reduced capability UEs requiring reduced bandwidth system information, resources allocated for reduced bandwidth system information may be wasted.

[0099] Thus, techniques for on-demand broadcast of system information for reduced capability UEs are described. In general, the described techniques enable a network to continuously broadcast first system information for reduced capability UEs, wherein the first system information includes an indication of whether additional system information for the reduced capability UEs is available to be received in response to an on-demand request.

[0100] For example, a reduced-capability UE may receive first system information for a reduced-capability UE (e.g., a reduced-bandwidth UE). The first system information may include a reduced-bandwidth system information block (RB-SIB1) or a reduced-bandwidth master information block (RB-MIB) (each of which may be received via a reduced-bandwidth synchronization signal block (RB-SSB)) or any combination thereof. Upon receiving the first system information, the UE may determine whether the first system information includes a dedicated field indicating whether additional system information (e.g., RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) for the reduced-capability UE is receivable in response to an on-demand request. If a dedicated field is included in the first system information, the UE may determine whether the additional system information is receivable in response to an on-demand request based on the dedicated field. Alternatively, if a dedicated field is not included in the first system information, the UE may determine whether the additional system information is receivable in response to an on-demand request based on a configuration information element of the first system information. In this regard, the dedicated field may be used as an efficient early indicator of whether the network is configured for on-demand system information (ODSI).

[0101] In some aspects, a request for additional system information may be sent via a physical random access channel (PRACH), a sounding reference signal (SRS), a physical uplink shared channel (PUSCH), a physical downlink control channel (PUCCH), or any combination thereof. Resources associated with sending a request for additional system information may be indicated in the first system information. In the case where the first system information includes a dedicated field, the dedicated field may include one or more bit fields. For example, in the case where the dedicated field includes a single bit field, a first value (e.g., other system information (OSI)-indicator-RB=1) may indicate that the network supports ODSI, wherein a second value (e.g., OSI-indicator-RB=0) may indicate that the network does not support ODSI. As another example, in the case where the dedicated field includes multiple bit fields, the value of the bit field may reference one or more lookup tables, which may be referenced to determine parameters for receiving additional system information (e.g., coverage level, modulation and coding scheme (MCS), code rate, periodicity), thresholds or other criteria for requesting additional system information (e.g., UE bandwidth capability threshold, reference signal received power (RSRP) threshold, etc.).

[0102] By enabling a UE to obtain additional system information in response to an on-demand request, the techniques described herein may reduce signaling overhead and result in a more efficient use of resources. Specifically, the techniques described herein may enable a network to broadcast additional system information only upon request, thereby reducing signaling overhead and preventing waste of resources in the presence of few (or no) UEs with reduced capabilities to receive additional system information.

[0103] Aspects of the disclosure are first described in the context of a wireless communication system. Additional aspects of the disclosure are described in the context of an example process flow. Aspects of the disclosure are further illustrated by apparatus diagrams, system diagrams, and flow diagrams relating to techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI, and are described with reference to these diagrams.

[0104] Figure 1 An example of a wireless communication system 100 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The wireless communication system 100 may include one or more base stations 105, one or more UEs 115, and a core network 130. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may be a long term evolution (LTE) network, an improved LTE (LTE-A) network, an LTE-A Pro network, or a new radio (NR) network. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may support enhanced broadband communications, ultra-reliable (e.g., mission-critical) communications, low-latency communications, or communications with low-cost and low-complexity devices, or any combination thereof.

[0105] Base stations 105 may be dispersed throughout a geographic area to form wireless communication system 100, and may be devices of different forms or capabilities. Base stations 105 and UEs 115 may communicate wirelessly via one or more communication links 125. Each base station 105 may provide a coverage area 110 over which UEs 115 and base stations 105 may establish one or more communication links 125. Coverage area 110 may be an example of a geographic area over which base stations 105 and UEs 115 may support transmission of signals in accordance with one or more radio access technologies.

[0106] UEs 115 may be dispersed throughout the coverage area 110 of the wireless communication system 100, and each UE 115 may be stationary, mobile, or both at different times. UEs 115 may be devices of different forms or with different capabilities. Figure 1Some example UEs 115 are shown in FIG. 1. The UEs 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, base stations 105, or network devices (e.g., core network nodes, relay devices, integrated access and backhaul (IAB) nodes, or other network devices), such as Figure 1 shown.

[0107] The base stations 105 may communicate with the core network 130, or communicate with each other, or perform both operations. For example, the base stations 105 may interface with the core network 130 via one or more backhaul links 120 (e.g., via S1, N2, N3 or other interfaces). The base stations 105 may communicate with each other directly (e.g., directly between the base stations 105) on the backhaul links 120 (e.g., via X2, Xn or other interfaces), or communicate with each other indirectly (e.g., via the core network 130), or perform both operations. In some examples, the backhaul links 120 may be or include one or more wireless links.

[0108] One or more of the base stations 105 described herein may include or may be referred to by those skilled in the art as a base station transceiver, a wireless base station, an access point, a wireless transceiver, a Node B, an evolved Node B (eNB), a next generation Node B, or a Gigabit Node B (any of which may be referred to as a gNB), a Home Node B, a Home Evolved Node B, or some other appropriate terminology.

[0109] UE 115 may include or may be referred to as a mobile device, a wireless device, a remote device, a handheld device, or a subscriber device, or some other appropriate terminology, where a "device" may also be referred to as a unit, a station, a terminal, or a client, etc. UE 115 may also include or may be referred to as a personal electronic device, such as a cellular phone, a personal digital assistant (PDA), a tablet computer, a laptop computer, or a personal computer. In some examples, UE 115 may include or be referred to as a wireless local loop (WLL) station, an Internet of Things (IoT) device, an Internet of Everything (IoE) device, or a machine type communication (MTC) device, etc., which may be implemented in various items such as appliances, or vehicles, meters, etc.

[0110] The UE 115 described herein may be able to communicate with various types of devices, such as other UEs 115, which may sometimes act as relays, as well as base stations 105 and network devices, including macro eNBs or gNBs, small cell eNBs or gNBs, or relay base stations, etc. Figure 1 shown.

[0111] The UE 115 and the base station 105 may communicate wirelessly with each other via one or more communication links 125 on one or more carriers. The term "carrier" may refer to a set of radio frequency spectrum resources having a defined physical layer structure for supporting the communication link 125. For example, a carrier for the communication link 125 may include a portion of a radio frequency spectrum band (e.g., a BWP, which operates according to one or more physical layer channels for a given radio access technology (e.g., LTE, LTE-A, LTE-A Pro, NR). Each physical layer channel may carry acquisition signaling (e.g., synchronization signals, system information), control signaling for coordinating operations for the carrier, user data, or other signaling. The wireless communication system 100 may support communication with the UE 115 using carrier aggregation or multi-carrier operation. Depending on the carrier aggregation configuration, the UE 115 may be configured with multiple downlink component carriers and one or more uplink component carriers. Carrier aggregation may be used with both frequency division duplex (FDD) component carriers and time division duplex (TDD) component carriers.

[0112] In some examples (e.g., in a carrier aggregation configuration), a carrier may also have acquisition signaling or control signaling for coordinating operations with respect to other carriers. A carrier may be associated with a frequency channel (e.g., an Evolved Universal Mobile Telecommunications System Terrestrial Radio Access (E-UTRA) Absolute Radio Frequency Channel Number (EARFCN)) and may be placed according to a channel grid for discovery by a UE 115. A carrier may operate in a standalone mode, where a UE 115 performs initial acquisition and connection via a carrier, or a carrier may operate in a non-standalone mode, where a different carrier (e.g., of the same or different radio access technology) is used to anchor a connection.

[0113] The communication link 125 shown in the wireless communication system 100 may include an uplink transmission from the UE 115 to the base station 105, or a downlink transmission from the base station 105 to the UE 115. A carrier may carry downlink or uplink communications (e.g., in FDD mode) or may be configured to carry both downlink and uplink communications (e.g., in TDD mode).

[0114] A carrier may be associated with a particular bandwidth of a radio frequency spectrum, and in some examples, the carrier bandwidth may be referred to as a "system bandwidth" of the carrier or wireless communication system 100. For example, the carrier bandwidth may be one of a plurality of determined bandwidths of a carrier for a particular radio access technology (e.g., 1.4, 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 40, or 80 megahertz (MHz)). A device of the wireless communication system 100 (e.g., a base station 105, a UE 115, or both) may have a hardware configuration that supports communication on a particular carrier bandwidth, or may be configurable to support communication on one of a set of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, the wireless communication system 100 may include a base station 105 or a UE 115 that supports simultaneous communication via carriers associated with a plurality of carrier bandwidths. In some examples, each served UE 115 may be configured to operate on a portion (e.g., a subband, a BWP) or all of a carrier bandwidth.

[0115] The signal waveform transmitted on the carrier may be composed of multiple subcarriers (e.g., using multicarrier modulation (MCM) techniques such as orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) or discrete Fourier transform spread OFDM (DFT-S-OFDM)). In a system employing MCM techniques, a resource element may include a symbol period (e.g., the duration of a modulation symbol) and a subcarrier, where the symbol period and the subcarrier spacing are inversely related. The number of bits carried by each resource element may depend on the modulation scheme (e.g., the order of the modulation scheme, the coding rate of the modulation scheme, or both). Therefore, the more resource elements received by the UE 115 and the higher the order of the modulation scheme, the higher the data rate for the UE 115 can be. Wireless communication resources may refer to a combination of radio frequency spectrum resources, time resources, and spatial resources (e.g., spatial layers or beams), and the use of multiple spatial layers may further increase the data rate or data integrity for communication with the UE 115.

[0116] One or more numerologies for a carrier may be supported, where the numerologies may include subcarrier spacing (Δf) and cyclic prefixes. A carrier may be divided into one or more BWPs with the same or different numerologies. In some examples, a UE 115 may be configured with multiple BWPs. In some examples, a single BWP for a carrier may be active at a given time, and communications for a UE 115 may be limited to the one or more active BWPs.

[0117] The basic time unit (which may be referred to as T s =1 / (Δf max ·N f ) seconds sampling period, where Δf maxIt can represent the maximum supported subcarrier spacing, and N f The time intervals for the base station 105 or the UE 115 may be expressed as multiples of a maximum supported discrete Fourier transform (DFT) size). The time intervals of the communication resources may be organized according to radio frames each having a specified duration (e.g., 10 milliseconds (ms)). Each radio frame may be identified by a system frame number (SFN) (e.g., ranging from 0 to 1023).

[0118] Each frame may include a plurality of consecutively numbered subframes or time slots, and each subframe or time slot may have the same duration. In some examples, a frame may be divided (e.g., in the time domain) into subframes, and each subframe may be further divided into a number of time slots. Alternatively, each frame may include a variable number of time slots, and the number of time slots may depend on the subcarrier spacing. Each time slot may include a number of symbol periods (e.g., depending on the length of a cyclic prefix added in front of each symbol period). In some wireless communication systems 100, a time slot may be further divided into a plurality of micro-time slots containing one or more symbols. Excluding the cyclic prefix, each symbol period may contain one or more (e.g., N f The duration of a symbol period may depend on the subcarrier spacing or the operating frequency band.

[0119] A subframe, a time slot, a mini-time slot, or a symbol may be the smallest scheduling unit (e.g., in the time domain) of the wireless communication system 100 and may be referred to as a transmission time interval (TTI). In some examples, the TTI duration (e.g., the number of symbol periods in a TTI) may be variable. Additionally or alternatively, the smallest scheduling unit of the wireless communication system 100 may be dynamically selected (e.g., in the form of bursts of shortened TTIs (sTTIs)).

[0120] Physical channels may be multiplexed on a carrier according to various techniques. For example, one or more of a time division multiplexing (TDM) technique, a frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique, or a hybrid TDM-FDM technique may be used to multiplex physical control channels and physical data channels on a downlink carrier. A control region (e.g., a control resource set (CORESET)) for a physical control channel may be defined by the number of symbol periods and may extend across the system bandwidth of a carrier or a subset of the system bandwidth. One or more control regions (e.g., CORESETs) may be configured for a group of UEs 115. For example, one or more of the UEs 115 may monitor or search the control region for control information according to one or more search space sets, and each search space set may include one or more control channel candidates at one or more aggregation levels arranged in a cascaded manner. The aggregation level for a control channel candidate may refer to the number of control channel resources (e.g., control channel elements (CCEs)) associated with the coded information for a control information format having a given payload size. The search space sets may include a common search space set configured for transmitting control information to multiple UEs 115 and a UE-specific search space set for transmitting control information to a specific UE 115 .

[0121] Each base station 105 can provide communication coverage via one or more cells (e.g., macro cells, small cells, hot spots or other types of cells, or any combination thereof). The term "cell" can refer to a logical communication entity used to communicate with the base station 105 (e.g., on a carrier), and can be associated with an identifier (e.g., a physical cell identifier (PCID), a virtual cell identifier (VCID) or other identifier) for distinguishing adjacent cells. In some examples, a cell can also refer to a geographic coverage area 110 or a portion of a geographic coverage area 110 (e.g., a sector) on which a logical communication entity operates. Depending on various factors (such as the capabilities of the base station 105), the scope of such a cell can range from a smaller area (e.g., a structure, a subset of a structure) to a larger area. For example, a cell can be or include a building, a subset of a building, or an external space between or overlapping geographic coverage areas 110, etc.

[0122] In some examples, the base stations 105 may be mobile and, therefore, provide communication coverage for mobile geographic coverage areas 110. In some examples, different geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may overlap, but the different geographic coverage areas 110 may be supported by the same base station 105. In other examples, overlapping geographic coverage areas 110 associated with different technologies may be supported by different base stations 105. The wireless communication system 100 may include, for example, a heterogeneous network in which different types of base stations 105 provide coverage for respective geographic coverage areas 110 using the same or different radio access technologies.

[0123] The wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable communication or low-latency communication, or various combinations thereof. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can be configured to support ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) or mission-critical communication. UE115 can be designed to support ultra-reliable, low-latency or critical functions (e.g., mission-critical functions). Ultra-reliable communication can include private communication or group communication, and can be supported by one or more mission-critical services (such as mission-critical push-to-talk (MCPTT), mission-critical video (MCVideo), or mission-critical data (MCData). Support for mission-critical functions can include prioritization of services, and mission-critical services can be used for public safety or general commercial applications. The terms ultra-reliable, low-latency, mission-critical, and ultra-reliable low-latency can be used interchangeably in this article.

[0124] In some examples, UE 115 may be able to communicate directly with other UE 115 on a device-to-device (D2D) communication link 135 (e.g., using a peer-to-peer (P2P) or D2D protocol). One or more UEs 115 utilizing D2D communication may be within a geographic coverage area 110 of a base station 105. Other UEs 115 in such a group may be outside the geographic coverage area 110 of the base station 105 or otherwise unable to receive transmissions from the base station 105. In some examples, groups of UEs 115 communicating via D2D communication may utilize a one-to-many (1:M) system, wherein each UE 115 transmits to each other UE 115 in the group. In some examples, the base station 105 facilitates the scheduling of resources for D2D communication. In other cases, D2D communication is performed between UEs 115 without involving the base station 105.

[0125] The core network 130 may provide user authentication, access authorization, tracking, Internet Protocol (IP) connection, and other access, routing or mobility functions. The core network 130 may be an evolved packet core (EPC) or a 5G core (5GC), which may include at least one control plane entity (e.g., a mobility management entity (MME), an access and mobility management function (AMF)) for managing access and mobility and at least one user plane entity (e.g., a serving gateway (S-GW), a packet data network (PDN) gateway (P-GW), or a user plane function (UPF)) for routing packets to an external network or interconnecting to an external network. The control plane entity may manage non-access stratum (NAS) functions, such as mobility, authentication, and bearer management for UE 115 served by a base station 105 associated with the core network 130. User IP packets may be transmitted through a user plane entity, which may provide IP address allocation and other functions. The user plane entity may be coupled to an IP service 150 for one or more network operators. IP services 150 may include access to the Internet, an intranet, an IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS), or packet-switched streaming services.

[0126] Some of the network devices (e.g., base stations 105) may include subcomponents such as access network entities 140, which may be examples of access node controllers (ANCs). Each access network entity 140 may communicate with the UE 115 through one or more other access network transport entities 145 (which may be referred to as radio heads, smart radio heads, or transmit / receive points (TRPs)). Each access network transport entity 145 may include one or more antenna panels. In some configurations, the various functions of each access network entity 140 or base station 105 may be distributed across various network devices (e.g., radio heads and ANCs) or merged into a single network device (e.g., base station 105).

[0127] The wireless communication system 100 may operate using one or more frequency bands, typically in the range of 300 megahertz (MHz) to 300 gigahertz (GHz). Typically, the region from 300 MHz to 3 GHz is referred to as the ultra-high frequency (UHF) region or decimeter band because the wavelengths range from approximately one decimeter to one meter in length. UHF waves may be blocked or redirected by buildings and environmental features, but the waves may be sufficient to penetrate structures for macro cells to provide service to UEs 115 located indoors. Transmissions using UHF waves may be associated with smaller antennas and shorter distances (e.g., less than 100 kilometers) compared to transmissions using smaller frequencies and longer waves in the high frequency (HF) or very high frequency (VHF) portions of the spectrum below 300 MHz.

[0128] The wireless communication system 100 can utilize both licensed and unlicensed radio frequency spectrum bands. For example, the wireless communication system 100 can employ license assisted access (LAA), LTE unlicensed (LTE-U) wireless access technology, or NR technology in an unlicensed band (such as the 5 GHz industrial, scientific, and medical (ISM) band). When operating in an unlicensed radio frequency spectrum band, devices (such as base stations 105 and UEs 115) can employ carrier sensing for conflict detection and avoidance. In some examples, operations in unlicensed bands can be based on a carrier aggregation configuration in combination with component carriers operating in a licensed band (e.g., LAA). Operations in the unlicensed spectrum can include downlink transmissions, uplink transmissions, P2P transmissions, or D2D transmissions, etc.

[0129] The base station 105 or UE 115 may be equipped with multiple antennas, which may be used to employ technologies such as transmit diversity, receive diversity, multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communications, or beamforming. The antennas of the base station 105 or UE 115 may be located within one or more antenna arrays or antenna panels (which may support MIMO operations or transmit or receive beamforming). For example, one or more base station antennas or antenna arrays may be co-located at an antenna assembly, such as an antenna tower. In some examples, the antennas or antenna arrays associated with the base station 105 may be located at different geographical locations. The base station 105 may have an antenna array having a number of rows and columns of antenna ports that the base station 105 may use to support beamforming for communications with the UE 115. Similarly, the UE 115 may have one or more antenna arrays that may support various MIMO or beamforming operations. Additionally or alternatively, the antenna panel may support radio frequency beamforming for signals sent via the antenna ports.

[0130] The base station 105 or UE 115 can use MIMO communication to exploit multipath signal propagation and improve spectral efficiency by sending or receiving multiple signals via different spatial layers. Such a technology may be referred to as spatial multiplexing. For example, a transmitting device may send multiple signals via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Similarly, a receiving device may receive multiple signals via different antennas or different combinations of antennas. Each of the multiple signals may be referred to as a separate spatial stream and may carry bits associated with the same data stream (e.g., the same codeword) or different data streams (e.g., different codewords). Different spatial layers may be associated with different antenna ports for channel measurement and reporting. MIMO technology includes single-user MIMO (SU-MIMO) (where multiple spatial layers are sent to the same receiving device) and multi-user MIMO (MU-MIMO) (where multiple spatial layers are sent to multiple devices).

[0131] Beamforming (which may also be referred to as spatial filtering, directional transmission, or directional reception) is a signal processing technique that can be used at a transmitting device or a receiving device (e.g., a base station 105, a UE 115) to form or direct an antenna beam (e.g., a transmit beam, a receive beam) along a spatial path between the transmitting device and the receiving device. Beamforming can be achieved by combining signals transmitted via antenna elements of an antenna array so that some signals propagating in a specific orientation relative to the antenna array experience constructive interference, while other signals experience destructive interference. Adjustments to signals transmitted via antenna elements may include the transmitting device or the receiving device applying an amplitude offset, a phase offset, or both to signals carried via antenna elements associated with the device. Adjustments associated with each of the antenna elements may be defined by a set of beamforming weights associated with a specific orientation (e.g., relative to the antenna array of the transmitting device or the receiving device, or relative to some other orientation).

[0132] As part of the beamforming operation, the base station 105 or the UE 115 may use beam scanning techniques. For example, the base station 105 may use multiple antennas or antenna arrays (e.g., antenna panels) to perform beamforming operations for directional communications with the UE 115. The base station 105 may send some signals (e.g., synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) multiple times in different directions. For example, the base station 105 may send signals based on different sets of beamforming weights associated with different transmission directions. Transmissions in different beam directions may be used (e.g., by a transmitting device (such as the base station 105) or by a receiving device (such as the UE 115)) to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by the base station 105.

[0133] Base station 105 may transmit some signals (e.g., data signals associated with a particular receiving device (e.g., UE 115)) in a single beam direction (e.g., a direction associated with the receiving device). In some examples, the beam direction associated with transmission along the single beam direction may be determined based on signals transmitted in one or more beam directions. For example, UE 115 may receive one or more of the signals transmitted by base station 105 in different directions and may report to base station 105 an indication of the signal received by UE 115 having the highest signal quality or otherwise acceptable signal quality.

[0134] In some examples, transmissions by a device (e.g., by a base station 105 or a UE 115) may be performed using multiple beam directions, and the device may generate a combined beam for transmission (e.g., from the base station 105 to the UE 115) using a combination of digital precoding or radio frequency beamforming. The UE 115 may report feedback indicating precoding weights for one or more beam directions, and the feedback may correspond to a configured number of beams across the system bandwidth or one or more subbands. The base station 105 may send reference signals (e.g., cell-specific reference signals (CRS), channel state information reference signals (CSI-RS)) that may or may not be precoded. The UE 115 may provide feedback for beam selection, which may be a precoding matrix indicator (PMI) or codebook-based feedback (e.g., a multi-panel type of codebook, a linear combination type of codebook, a port selection type of codebook). Although these techniques are described with reference to signals sent by base station 105 in one or more directions, UE 115 may employ similar techniques to send signals multiple times in different directions (e.g., to identify a beam direction for subsequent transmission or reception by UE 115) or to send signals in a single direction (e.g., to send data to a receiving device).

[0135] When receiving various signals (such as synchronization signals, reference signals, beam selection signals, or other control signals) from the base station 105, the receiving device (e.g., UE 115) can try multiple reception configurations (e.g., directional listening). For example, the receiving device can try multiple reception directions by receiving via different antenna subarrays, by processing the received signals according to different antenna subarrays, by receiving according to different reception beamforming weight sets applied to the signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array (e.g., different directional listening weight sets), or by processing the received signals according to different reception beamforming weight sets applied to the signals received at multiple antenna elements of the antenna array (any of the above operations may be referred to as "listening" according to different reception configurations or reception directions). In some examples, the receiving device can use a single reception configuration to receive along a single beam direction (e.g., when receiving a data signal). A single receive configuration may be aligned on a beam direction determined based on listening according to different receive configuration directions (e.g., a beam direction determined to have the highest signal strength, the highest signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), or otherwise acceptable signal quality based on listening according to multiple beam directions).

[0136] The wireless communication system 100 may be a packet-based network operated according to a layered protocol stack. In the user plane, the communication at the bearer or packet data convergence protocol (PDCP) layer may be IP-based. The radio link control (RLC) layer may perform packet segmentation and reassembly to transmit on a logical channel. The medium access control (MAC) layer may perform priority handling and multiplexing of logical channels to transport channels. The MAC layer may also support retransmission at the MAC layer using error detection techniques, error correction techniques, or both to improve link efficiency. In the control plane, the radio resource control (RRC) protocol layer may provide the establishment, configuration, and maintenance of an RRC connection (which supports radio bearers for user plane data) between a UE 115 and a base station 105 or a core network 130. At the physical layer, transport channels may be mapped to physical channels.

[0137] UE 115 and base station 105 can support retransmission of data to increase the possibility that the data is successfully received. Hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) feedback is a technology for increasing the possibility that data is correctly received on communication link 125. HARQ can include a combination of error detection (e.g., using cyclic redundancy check (CRC)), forward error correction (FEC) and retransmission (e.g., automatic repeat request (ARQ)). HARQ can improve the throughput at the MAC layer under poor radio conditions (e.g., low signal and noise conditions). In some examples, the device can support the same time slot HARQ feedback, wherein the device can provide HARQ feedback for data received in the previous symbol in the time slot in a specific time slot. In other cases, the device can provide HARQ feedback in subsequent time slots or according to some other time interval.

[0138] In some aspects, the UE 115 and the base station 105 of the wireless communication system 100 may support techniques for on-demand broadcasting of additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115. Specifically, the reduced capability UE 115 of the wireless communication system 100 may receive first system information for the reduced capability UE from the base station 105, and may be able to determine whether the additional system information is available to be received in response to the on-demand request based on an indication in the first system information.

[0139] For example, the base station 105 of the wireless communication system 100 may be configured to broadcast the first system information for the UE 115 with reduced capability periodically (e.g., continuously). The first system information for the UE 115 with reduced capability may include RB-SIB1 or RB-MIB received via RB-SSB. In this example, the UE 115 with reduced capability may receive the first system information for the UE 115 with reduced capability, and may determine whether the first system information includes a dedicated field indicating whether additional system information (e.g., RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) for the UE 115 with reduced capability can be received in response to an on-demand request. If a dedicated field is included in the first system information, the UE 115 may determine whether the additional system information can be received in response to an on-demand request based on the dedicated field. Alternatively, if a dedicated field is not included in the first system information, the UE 115 may determine whether the additional system information can be received in response to an on-demand request based on the configuration information element of the first system information. In this regard, the dedicated field may serve as an efficient early indicator as to whether the network is configured for ODSI.

[0140] In the case where the first system information indicates that the additional system information may not be received in response to an on-demand request, the reduced-capability UE 115 may continue wireless communication without acquiring the additional system information, or it may search for a new cell. Conversely, in the case where the first system information indicates that the additional system information may be received in response to an on-demand request, the UE 115 may send a request for the additional system information, and may obtain the additional system information in response to the request.

[0141] In some aspects, a request for additional system information may be sent via PRACH, SRS, PUSCH, PUCCH, or any combination thereof. Resources associated with sending a request for additional system information may be indicated in the first system information. In the case where the first system information includes a dedicated field, the dedicated field may include one or more bit fields. For example, in the case where the dedicated field includes a single bit field, a first value (e.g., OSI-indicator-RB=1) may indicate that the network supports ODSI, wherein a second value (e.g., OSI-indicator-RB=0) may indicate that the network does not support ODSI. As another example, in the case where the dedicated field includes multiple bit fields, the value of the bit field may reference one or more lookup tables, which may be referenced to determine parameters for receiving additional system information (e.g., coverage level, MCS, code rate, periodicity), thresholds for requesting additional system information, or other criteria (e.g., UE bandwidth capability threshold, RSRP threshold, etc.).

[0142] Techniques described herein may provide for on-demand broadcasting of system information, which may reduce signaling overhead and result in more efficient use of resources within the wireless communication system 100. Specifically, techniques described herein may enable a base station 105 of a wireless communication system to broadcast additional system information upon request, thereby reducing signaling overhead and preventing wasted resources in situations where there are few (or no) reduced capability UEs 115 that want to receive the additional system information.

[0143] Figure 2 An example of a wireless communication system 200 that supports techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the wireless communication system 200 can implement aspects of the wireless communication system 100. The wireless communication system 200 can include a first UE 115-a (e.g., a reduced-capability UE 115-a), a second UE 115-b (e.g., a full-capability UE 115-b), and a base station 105-a, which can be as described with reference to Figure 1 Examples of UE 115 and base station 105 are described.

[0144] In some aspects, UEs 115-a and 115-b may communicate with base station 105-a using one or more beams, one or more carriers, one or more communication links, or any combination thereof. For example, a first UE 115-a may communicate with base station 105-a via communication link 205-a, and a second UE 115-b may communicate with base station 105-b via communication link 205-b. In some aspects, communication links 205-a and 205-b may include examples of access links (e.g., Uu links). Communication links 205-a and 205-b may include bidirectional links that may include both uplink and downlink communications. For example, a first UE 115-a may send an uplink transmission (such as an uplink control signal or an uplink data signal) to base station 105-a using communication link 205-a, and base station 105-a may send a downlink transmission (such as a downlink control signal or a downlink data signal) to the first UE 115-a using wireless link 205-a. In some aspects, the wireless communication system 200 may support wireless communications with wireless devices (e.g., a first UE 115-a, a second UE 115-b) via one or more serving cells of the wireless communication system 200. Each serving cell may be supported by one or more base stations 105 of the wireless communication system 200.

[0145] like Figure 2As shown, the base station 105-a of the wireless communication system 200 can be configured to support both conventional, full-capability user equipment UE 115 and reduced-capability UE 115. For example, the second UE 115-b may include an example of a full-capability (e.g., full bandwidth) UE 115-b, while the first UE 115-a may include an example of a reduced-capability (e.g., reduced bandwidth) UE 115-a. The reduced-capability UE 115-a may exhibit reduced capabilities with respect to one or more parameters, including the bandwidth over which it can communicate, processing power, number of antennas, or any combination thereof, compared to the full-capability UE 115-b. For example, in some cases, the first UE 115-a may include bandwidth capabilities below a given threshold, and may communicate with the base station 105-a at a reduced bandwidth compared to the full-capability UE 115-b.

[0146] In some wireless communication systems, due to the reduced capability of the first UE 115-a (e.g., reduced bandwidth capability), the first UE 115-a may not be able to receive system information (e.g., MIB, SIB, SSB) that is broadcast by the base station 105-a using a bandwidth (e.g., BWP) that is receivable by a conventional, full-capability UE 115-b. UEs 115-a and 115-b may obtain additional system information to perform some communication services or programs, such as gaming applications, video messaging services, etc. In some wireless communication systems, in order to enable the reduced-capability UE 115-a to receive the additional system information, the base station 105-a may selectively adjust the bandwidth or other parameters used to send the additional system information so that both the full-capability UE 115-b and the reduced-capability UE 115-a may be able to receive the same system information. However, broadcasting the system information over a smaller bandwidth may result in inefficient use of resources and increase power consumption at the base station 105-a. Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-a may transmit regular system information for the full-capability UE 115-b and reduced-bandwidth system information for the reduced-capability UE 115-a. However, transmitting separate system information may result in increased network overhead and resource congestion. Furthermore, in the presence of few or no reduced-capability UEs 115 (e.g., the first UE 115-a) that require reduced-bandwidth system information, resources allocated for the reduced-bandwidth system information may be wasted.

[0147] Thus, the wireless communication system 200 can be configured to enable the base station 105-a to broadcast additional system information for a reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., reduced capability UE 115-a) in response to an on-demand request. In general, the described techniques enable the network to continuously broadcast first system information for the reduced capability UE 115-a (e.g., RB-SIB1 or RB-MIB received via RB-SSB), wherein the first system information includes an indication of whether the additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115-a is available for reception in response to an on-demand request.

[0148] For example, a UE 115-a (e.g., a reduced capability UE 115-a) may receive first system information 210 from a base station 105-a. In some aspects, the first system information 210 may be configured for (e.g., receivable by) a reduced capability UE 115 that includes a bandwidth capability below a threshold. For example, the first system information 210 may include a first type of SIB (e.g., RB-SIB1) or a MIB (e.g., RB-MIB), or a combination thereof.

[0149] In some aspects, the first system information 210 may be received via a dedicated physical broadcast channel (PBCH) associated with the reduced capability UE 115, a dedicated physical downlink shared channel (PDSCH) associated with the reduced capability UE 115, or both. In other words, the first system information may be broadcast / transmitted within resources associated with the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115). For example, the wireless communication system 200 may be configured (e.g., via RRC signaling, SIB messaging) with downlink and / or uplink BWPs dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115, the regular UE 115, or both. In some cases, the wireless communication system 200 may include different sets of downlink and uplink BWPs, which are dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115 and the regular UE 115, respectively. For example, an initial downlink BWP dedicated to the reduced-capability UE 115 may be defined or configured (e.g., via RRC), where the dedicated downlink BWP is different from the initial downlink BWP for the regular, non-reduced-bandwidth UE 115. A set of resources associated with or dedicated to the reduced-capability UE 115 (e.g., the dedicated BWP) may be configured to not exceed an expected maximum bandwidth capability supported by the reduced-capability user equipment 115. Additionally, in some cases, the wireless communication system 200 may be configured with a random access channel (RACH) opportunity (RO) for sending the first system information. The RO set may be dedicated to the reduced-capability UE 115 or shared with the regular UE 115.

[0150] In other cases, the first system information 210 may be received via a channel that is not associated with the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., not dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115). In some aspects, the first system information 210 received by the UE 115-a may be multiplexed with other system information receivable by other UEs 115 (e.g., full capability UE 115-b). For example, in some cases, the base station 105-a may multiplex the system information receivable by the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-a) with other system information receivable by the full capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-b) to generate the first system information 210. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may evaluate the first system information 210 for a dedicated field that includes an indicator that additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-a) may be received in response to an on-demand request. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine whether the first system information 210 includes a dedicated field indicating whether the network supports ODSI for reduced-capability UEs 115. In some aspects, the dedicated field within the first system information 210 may include one or more bit fields.

[0151] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine a system information request mode for requesting the additional system information 220. The system information request mode may indicate whether the base station 105-a supports broadcasts of the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UEs 115. Additionally or alternatively, the system information request mode may indicate a channel and / or resource for requesting the additional system information 220. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine the system information request mode to determine whether the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UEs 115 may be received without an on-demand request, whether the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UEs 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request, a channel (e.g., a resource) that may be used to request the additional system information 220, or any combination thereof.

[0152] UE 115-a may determine the system information request mode based on information included in a dedicated field of the first system information 210, information included in a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both. In this regard, UE 115-a may determine the system information request mode based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating whether the first system information 220 includes a dedicated field associated with additional system information 220, or both. For example, in the case where UE 115-a determines that the first system information 210 includes a dedicated field, UE 115-a may determine the system information request mode based on the information included in the dedicated field. As another example, in the case where UE 115-a determines that the first system information 210 does not include a dedicated field (e.g., a dedicated field is missing in the first system information 210), UE 115-a may determine the system information request mode based on information included in a configuration information element (e.g., SI-RequestConfig-RB) of the first system information 210.

[0153] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine a corresponding system information request mode to determine a channel, a resource set (e.g., a BWP), or both on which the request 215 for additional system information 220 may be sent. For example, the corresponding system information request mode may be associated with a PRACH channel, an SRS, a PUSCH, a PUCCH, or any combination thereof. In this regard, the UE 115-a may be configured to determine a channel (e.g., PRACH, PUSCH, PUCCH) and / or a resource set (e.g., an SRS resource set, a time / frequency resource set, an uplink BWP) on which the request 215 for additional system information 220 may be sent based on the determined system information request mode. In some cases, the UE 115-a may be configured to determine that the request 215 for additional system information 220 will be sent within an uplink BWP dedicated to the UE 115 with reduced capability.

[0154] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine whether additional system information 220 for a reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained (e.g., acquired, received) based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 220 for a dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, or any combination thereof. Specifically, the UE 115-a may determine whether the additional system information 220 for a reduced capability UE 115 may be received without a request 215, may be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215), or both. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may be configured to determine whether the additional system information 220 may (or may not) be received based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210 (if any), based on a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both.

[0155] For example, in the event that the UE 115-a determines that the first system information 210 includes a dedicated field, the UE 115-a may determine, based on the information included in the dedicated field, whether the additional system information 220 may be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215) and / or without the request 215. As another example, in the event that the UE 115-a determines that the first system information 210 does not include a dedicated field (e.g., the dedicated field is missing in the first system information 210), the UE 115-a may determine, based on information included in a configuration information element (e.g., SI-RequestConfig-RB) of the first system information 210, whether the additional system information 220 may be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215) and / or without the request 215. In this regard, the dedicated field may serve as an efficient early indicator as to whether the base station 105-a is configured for ODSI of a UE 115 with reduced capability.

[0156] In the case where the first system information 210 includes a dedicated field including one or more bit fields, the UE 115-a may be configured to determine that a first value of a bit field in the one or more bit fields (e.g., OSI-Indicator-RB=1) indicates that the additional system information 220 for the reduced-capability UE 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215). Conversely, the UE 115-a may also be configured to determine that a second value of a bit field in the one or more bit fields (e.g., OSI-Indicator-RB=0) indicates that the additional system information 220 for the reduced-capability UE 115 may not be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215).

[0157] In the event that UE 115-a determines that additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 may not be obtained with or without an on-demand request (e.g., request 215), UE 115-a may continue wireless communications, select a new cell, or both without obtaining the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115. For example, in the event that UE 115-a determines that additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 may not be received in response to request 215 (or without request 215), UE 115-a may search for a new cell supported by base station 105-a and / or a different base station 105 that allows the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-a) to receive additional system information 220 in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215) and / or without request 215. As another example, in some cases, the UE 115-a may determine a system information pattern that indicates that the base station 105-a is not configured to send additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115. In this example, the UE 115-a may continue wireless communications without obtaining the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 based on the determined system information request pattern, select a new cell, or both.

[0158] In contrast, in the event that the UE 115-a determines that the additional system information 220 for the reduced-capability UE 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request (e.g., request 215), the UE 115-a, the base station 105-a, or both may determine a set of thresholds for sending the request 215 for the additional system information. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine the set of thresholds for sending the request 215 based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the second system information 210, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine the set of thresholds based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 310 for the dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether the additional system information 220 for the reduced-capability UE 115 may be obtained with and / or without the request 215, or any combination thereof.

[0159] In the case where the dedicated field includes one or more bit fields, the UE 115-a can determine the threshold set based on one or more values of the one or more bit fields in the dedicated field. In some aspects, the UE 115-a can be pre-configured (e.g., via RRC signaling or other control signaling) to interpret different bit values of the dedicated field and / or configuration information element as indicating different threshold sets. For example, the UE 115-a can receive a control message (e.g., an RRC message) indicating that a first value of a bit field of the dedicated field is associated with a first threshold set, and a second value of a bit field of the dedicated field is associated with a second threshold set. Subsequently, the value of the bit field of the dedicated field within the first system information 210 can be used to indicate which threshold set the UE 115-a will use.

[0160] The set of thresholds for sending the request 215 for the additional system information 220 may include any thresholds or parameters known in the art. For example, the set of thresholds may include a threshold associated with the bandwidth capability of the UE 115-a (e.g., a minimum bandwidth capability that the UE 115-a may have to be able to request the additional system information 220), a threshold associated with the number of antennas of the UE 115-a (e.g., a minimum number of antennas that the UE 115-a may have to be able to request the additional system information 220), or both. As another example, the set of thresholds may include a threshold associated with the signal quality of a signal received at the UE 115 (e.g., an RSRP threshold, a reference signal received quality (RSRQ) threshold, a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) threshold, an SNR threshold, a signal to interference plus noise ratio (SINR) threshold), a threshold associated with the number of requests 215 for the additional system information 220 that the UE 115-a may send (e.g., a maximum number of requests 215 that the UE 115-a may send), or any combination thereof.

[0161] The base station 105-a may indicate a threshold set via the first system information 210 to indicate which UEs 115 may be allowed to request additional system information 220. In order to request the additional system information 220, the UE 115-a may be required to meet one or more thresholds (e.g., all) in the threshold set. In this regard, the UE 115-a may be configured to determine the threshold set and determine whether the UE 115-a meets the one or more thresholds in order to determine whether the UE 115-a is able to send a request 215 for the additional system information 220.

[0162] In some aspects, the UE 115-a, the base station 105-a, or both may determine a set of additional system information (e.g., RB-SIB1, RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) that may be requested from the base station 105-a. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine the set of additional system information that may be requested based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210 (if any), based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine the set of additional system information that may be requested based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information for the dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether additional system information 220 for a reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained with and / or without a request 215, determining a threshold for sending a request 215, or any combination thereof.

[0163] In some aspects, the UE 115-a, the base station 105-a, or both may determine a set of parameters that the base station 105-a may use to send the additional system information 220. Additionally or alternatively, the UE 115-a may determine a set of parameters that the UE 115-a may use to receive the additional system information 220. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine the set of parameters for sending and / or receiving the additional system information 220 based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine the set of parameters for sending and / or receiving the additional system information 220 based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 220 for the dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained with and / or without a request 215, determining a threshold for sending a request 215, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested, or any combination thereof.

[0164] In some aspects, the set of parameters that the base station 105-a may use to send the additional system information 220 (e.g., the parameters that the UE 115-a may use to receive the additional system information) may include an MCS, a code rate, a set of time resources, a set of frequency resources, a set of space resources, or any combination thereof. For example, the parameters that the base station 105-a may use to send the additional system information 220 may include a configured BWP associated with (e.g., dedicated to) a reduced capability UE 115, a regular UE 115, or both. In this regard, the base station 105-a may indicate and the UE 115-a may determine, based on information included in a dedicated field and / or a configuration information element of the first system information 210, a coverage enhancement scheme that may be used to send and / or receive the additional system information 220. In some aspects, one or more parameters in the set of parameters that may be used to send and / or receive the additional system information 220 (e.g., a BWP for sending / receiving the additional system information 220) may be different from at least one parameter used to send and / or receive the first system information 210.

[0165] In some aspects, the UE 115-a, the base station 105-a, or both may determine a periodicity associated with the additional system information 220. The periodicity may include a periodicity during which the base station 105-a may send the additional system information 220. In some cases, the periodicity associated with the additional system information 220 may be different from a periodicity associated with the first system information 210 (e.g., a periodicity during which the first system information is transmitted or broadcast). In some aspects, the UE 115-a may determine the periodicity associated with the additional system information 220 based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-a may determine a period associated with the additional system information 220 based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 210 for a dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained with and / or without a request 215, determining a threshold for sending a request 215, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested, determining parameters for sending / receiving the additional system information 220, or any combination thereof.

[0166] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 for additional system information 220. In some aspects, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 for additional system information 220 based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information 210, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information 210, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 for additional system information 220 based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 210 for the dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether additional system information 220 for a reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained, determining a threshold for sending the request 215, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested, determining parameters for sending / receiving the additional system information 220, determining a periodicity for the additional system information 220, or any combination thereof.

[0167] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 for the additional system information 220 based on a determined system information request mode. For example, the determined system information request mode may be associated with a given set of resources (e.g., PRACH resources, SRS resources, PUSCH resources, PUCCH resources, configured or dedicated BWPs, or any combination thereof), and the UE 115-a may send the request 215 based on (e.g., based on) the determined set of resources. For example, depending on the determined system information request mode, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 via a set of resources associated with the PRACH, SRS, PUSCH, PUCCH, or any combination thereof. As another example, the UE 115-a may send the request 215 via an uplink BWP associated with (e.g., dedicated to) a reduced capability UE 115.

[0168] In some aspects, UE 115-a may send request 215 based on determining that UE 115-a satisfies at least one threshold in a determined set of thresholds. For example, the set of thresholds may include a minimum bandwidth capability threshold. In this example, UE 115-a may determine that the bandwidth capabilities of UE 115-a meet (e.g., exceed) the minimum bandwidth capability threshold, and may therefore send request 215 based on determining that UE 115-a satisfies the minimum bandwidth capability threshold. As previously mentioned herein, UE 115-a may be configured to determine that it may send request 215 based on determining that it satisfies only a subset of a set of thresholds, determining that it satisfies every threshold in a set of thresholds, or both.

[0169] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may indicate to the base station 105-a via the request 215 (and / or another uplink transmission) an indication of which additional system information 220 is being requested, an indication of one or more parameters (e.g., a coverage enhancement scheme) that the base station 105-a may use to send the additional system information, or both. For example, the UE 115-a may determine a set of additional system information that may be requested based on the first system information 210, determine (e.g., select) which additional system information 220 to request from the set of additional system information, and may indicate to the base station 105-a via the request 215 and / or another uplink transmission the determined (e.g., selected) additional system information 220.

[0170] As another example, the UE 115-a may determine a set of parameters (e.g., coverage enhancement scheme, MCS, code rate, time / frequency resources, BWP) that the base station 105-a may use to send additional system information 220. In this example, the UE 115-a may determine (e.g., select) one or more parameters from the set of parameters to be used by the base station 105-a to send the additional system information 220, and may indicate the determined (e.g., selected) parameters to the base station 105-a via the request 215 and / or another uplink transmission. For example, the UE 115-a may determine a set of MCSs that may be used by the base station 105-a to send the additional system information 220, and may indicate in the request 215 which MCS the base station 105-a should use to send the additional system information 220. As another example, the UE 115-a may determine a set of downlink BWPs that may be used by the base station 105-a to send the additional system information 220, and may indicate in the request 215 which BWP (e.g., a downlink BWP dedicated to the reduced-capability UE 115) the base station 105-a should use to send the additional system information 220. In some cases, the parameters selected and indicated to the base station 105-a that the base station 105-a may use to send the additional system information 220 may be different from at least one parameter that the base station 105-a may use to send the first system information 210.

[0171] In some cases, UE 115-a may be configured to obtain additional system information 220 without sending request 215 and may therefore avoid sending Figure 2 . For example, in some cases, the determined system information request mode may indicate that UE 115-a does not need to send request 215 for additional system information 220. In this example, UE 115-a may be configured to avoid sending request 215 and may instead monitor additional system information 220 to obtain additional system information 220 according to the determined system information request mode.

[0172] In some aspects, the UE 115-a may obtain (e.g., receive) additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115. In some aspects, the additional system information 220 may include a second type of SIB (e.g., RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) that is different from the first type of SIB associated with the first system information 210. The UE 115-a may obtain the additional system information 220 based on information included in a dedicated field of the first system information 210 when the dedicated field is present, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information 210 when the dedicated field is not present in the first system information 220, or both. In some cases, the UE 115-a may receive the additional system information 220 within a downlink BWP that is associated with the reduced capability UE 115, the regular UE 115, or both (e.g., dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115, the regular UE 115, or both).

[0173] In this regard, the UE 115-a may obtain (e.g., receive) the additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 based on receiving the first system information 210, evaluating the first system information 210 for a dedicated field, determining a system information request mode, determining whether additional system information 220 for the reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained with and / or without a request 215, determining a threshold for sending a request 215, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested, determining parameters for sending / receiving the additional system information 220, determining a periodicity for the additional system information 220, sending a request 215, or any combination thereof. Furthermore, the UE 115-a may be configured to obtain the additional system information 220 based on indicating to the base station 105-a which additional system information 220 is being requested, which parameters the base station 105-a will use to send the additional system information 220, or any combination thereof.

[0174] In some cases, the base station 105-a may be configured to determine a number of reduced-capability UEs 115 communicatively coupled to the base station 105-a. The base station 105-a may determine the number of reduced-capability UEs 115 communicatively coupled to the base station 105-a in order to determine whether it should continue to send (e.g., broadcast) additional system information 220 or whether it may end broadcasting the additional system information. In some aspects, the base station 105-a may be configured to refrain from sending (e.g., broadcasting) the additional system information 220 (e.g., end broadcasting the additional system information 220) if the base station 105-a determines that the number of reduced-capability UEs 115 for wireless communication with the base station 105-a is less than a threshold number of reduced-capability UEs 115. For example, the base station 105-a may be configured to refrain from sending (e.g., broadcasting) the additional system information 220 if the base station 105-a determines that there are no reduced-capability UEs 115 for wireless communication with the base station 105-a. Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-a may be configured to avoid sending the additional system information 220 after a predetermined time, after a predetermined number of broadcasts, or any combination thereof when the UE 115-a (e.g., UE 115-a) requesting the additional system information 220 is no longer in wireless communication with the base station 105-a.

[0175] Techniques described herein may provide for on-demand broadcasting of system information, which may reduce signaling overhead and result in more efficient use of resources within the wireless communication system 200. Specifically, techniques described herein may enable a base station 105-a of the wireless communication system 200 to broadcast additional system information upon request, thereby reducing signaling overhead and preventing wasted resources in situations where there are few (or no) reduced capability UEs 115 that want to receive the additional system information.

[0176] Figure 3 An example of a process flow 300 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI in accordance with aspects of the present disclosure is shown. In some examples, the process flow 300 can implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communication system 100, the wireless communication system 200, or both. For example, the process flow 300 can illustrate that a reduced-capability UE 115-c receives first system information from a base station 105-b, evaluates whether the first system information includes a dedicated field indicating whether additional system information for the reduced-capability UE 115 is available to be received in response to the on-demand request, and obtains the additional system information based on information included in the first system information, as described with reference to FIG. Figure 1-2 Described etc.

[0177] In some examples, the operations shown in process flow 300 can be performed by hardware (e.g., including circuits, processing blocks, logic components, and other components), code executed by a processor (e.g., software or firmware), or any combination thereof. The following alternative examples can be implemented in which some of the steps are performed in a different order than described or not performed at all. In some cases, the steps may include additional features not mentioned below, or additional steps may be added.

[0178] At 305, a UE 115-c (e.g., a reduced capability UE 115-c) may receive first system information from a base station 105-b. In some aspects, the first system information may be configured for (e.g., receivable by) a reduced capability UE 115 that includes a bandwidth capability below a threshold. For example, the first system information may include a first type of SIB (e.g., RB-SIB1), a first type of MIB (e.g., RB-MIB), or a combination thereof.

[0179] In some aspects, the first system information received at 305 may be received via a dedicated PBCH associated with the reduced capability UE 115, a dedicated PDSCH associated with the reduced capability UE 115, a dedicated downlink BWP associated with the reduced capability UE 115, or any combination thereof. In other cases, the first system information may be received via a channel that is not associated with the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., not dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115). In some aspects, the first system information received by UE 115-c may be multiplexed with other system information receivable by other UEs 115 (e.g., full capability UEs 115). For example, in some cases, the base station 105-b may multiplex the system information receivable by the reduced capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-c) with other system information receivable by the full capability UE 115 to generate the first system information sent at 305. At 310, the UE 115-c may evaluate the first system information for a dedicated field that includes an indicator that additional system information for a reduced-capability UE 115 (e.g., UE 115-c) may be received in response to an on-demand request. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine whether the first system information includes a dedicated field that indicates whether the network supports ODSI for the reduced-capability UE 115. In some aspects, the dedicated field within the first system information may include one or more bit fields.

[0180] At 315, the UE 115-c may determine a system information request mode for requesting additional system information. The system information request mode may indicate whether the base station 105-b supports broadcasts of additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115. Additionally or alternatively, the system information request mode may indicate a channel and / or resource (e.g., uplink BWP) for requesting the additional system information. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine the system information request mode to determine whether the additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be received without an on-demand request, whether the additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request, a channel (e.g., a resource) that may be used to request the additional system information, or any combination thereof.

[0181] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine the system information request mode based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information, information included within a configuration information element of the first system information, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine the system information request mode at 315 based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating whether the first system information includes a dedicated field at 310, or both. For example, in the event that the UE 115-c determines at 310 that the first system information includes a dedicated field, the UE 115-c may determine the system information request mode at 315 based on information included in the dedicated field. As another example, in the event that the UE 115-c determines at 310 that the first system information does not include a dedicated field (e.g., a dedicated field is missing in the first system information), the UE 115-c may determine the system information request mode at 315 based on information included in a configuration information element (e.g., SI-RequestConfig-RB) of the first system information.

[0182] In some implementations, the first system information may indicate the time / frequency resources for receiving the additional system information. For example, the first system information may indicate a downlink BWP (e.g., a dedicated downlink BWP for a UE 115 with reduced capability) that will be used to receive the additional system information. In this regard, the first system information may indicate a downlink BWP configuration for receiving the first system information and / or the additional system information. In some aspects, the downlink BWP for the additional system information may be the same as or different from the downlink BWP for receiving the first system information. In other words, the first downlink BWP associated with the first system information may be shared or configured separately with the second downlink BWP for the additional system information.

[0183] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine a corresponding system information request mode at 315 to determine a channel, a resource set (e.g., a BWP), or both on which a request for additional system information may be sent. For example, the corresponding system information request mode may be associated with a PRACH channel, an SRS, a PUSCH, a PUCCH, or any combination thereof. In this regard, the UE 115-c may be configured to determine a channel (e.g., a PRACH, a PUSCH, a PUCCH) and / or a resource set (e.g., an SRS resource set, a time / frequency resource set) on which a request for additional system information may be sent based on the system information request mode determined at 315. In other words, the first system information may indicate an uplink BWP (e.g., an uplink BWP configuration) for sending a request for additional system information.

[0184] At 320, the UE 115-c may determine whether additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be received (e.g., obtained) The UE 115-c may determine whether additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be received in response to the on-demand request based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field at 310, determining the system information request mode at 315, or any combination thereof.

[0185] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine whether additional system information for the reduced-capability UE 115 may be received without a request, whether the additional system information may be received in response to an on-demand request, or both. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may be configured to determine whether the additional system information may (or may not) be received based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information (if any), based on a configuration information element of the first system information, or both. For example, in the event that the UE 115-c determines at 310 that the first system information includes a dedicated field, the UE 115-c may determine at 320 whether the additional system information may be received in response to an on-demand request and / or without a request based on the information included in the dedicated field. As another example, where the UE 115-c determines at 310 that the first system information does not include a dedicated field (e.g., the dedicated field is missing in the first system information), the UE 115-c may determine at 320 whether additional system information may be received in response to an on-demand request and / or without a request based on information included in a configuration information element (e.g., SI-RequestConfig-RB) of the first system information. In this regard, the dedicated field may serve as an efficient early indicator of whether the base station 105-b is configured for ODSI of a reduced-capability UE 115.

[0186] In the case where the first system information includes a dedicated field including one or more bit fields, the UE 115-c may be configured to determine that a first value of a bit field in the one or more bit fields (e.g., OSI-Indicator-RB=1) indicates that additional system information for the reduced-capability UE 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request. Conversely, the UE 115-c may also be configured to determine that a second value of a bit field in the one or more bit fields (e.g., OSI-Indicator-RB=0) indicates that additional system information for the reduced-capability UE 115 may not be received in response to an on-demand request.

[0187] In the event that the UE 115 - c determines that additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may not be obtained with or without an on-demand request, the process flow 300 may continue to 325 .

[0188] At 325, the UE 115-c may continue wireless communications, select a new cell, or both without obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115. For example, in the event that the UE 115-c determines that additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may not be received in response to an on-demand request (or without a request), the UE 115-c may search for a new cell supported by the base station 105-b and / or a different base station 105 that allows the reduced capability UE 115-c to receive additional system information in response to an on-demand request and / or without a request. As another example, in some cases, the UE 115-c may determine a system information mode at 315 that indicates that the base station 105-b is not configured to send additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115. In this example, the UE 115-c may continue wireless communications, select a new cell, or both without obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 based on the determined system information request mode.

[0189] Reference will be made again to 320 of process flow 300. Where the UE 115-c determines at 320 that additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be received in response to an on-demand request, process flow 300 may proceed to 330.

[0190] At 330, the UE 115-c, the base station 105-b, or both may determine a set of thresholds for sending a request for additional system information. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine the set of thresholds for sending a request based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the second system information, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine the set of thresholds based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for the dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for a reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained at 320, or any combination thereof.

[0191] In the case where the dedicated field includes one or more bit fields, the UE 115-c may determine the threshold set based on one or more values of the one or more bit fields in the dedicated field. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may be pre-configured (e.g., via RRC signaling or other control signaling) to interpret different bit values of the dedicated field and / or configuration information element as indicating different threshold sets. For example, the UE 115-c may receive a control message (e.g., an RRC message) indicating that a first value of a bit field of the dedicated field is associated with a first threshold set, and a second value of a bit field of the dedicated field is associated with a second threshold set. Subsequently, the value of the bit field of the dedicated field within the first system information may be used to indicate which threshold set the UE 115-c is to use.

[0192] The set of thresholds for sending a request for additional system information may include any thresholds or parameters known in the art. For example, the set of thresholds may include thresholds associated with the bandwidth capabilities of the UE 115-c (e.g., the minimum bandwidth capabilities that the UE 115-c may have to be able to request additional system information), thresholds associated with the number of antennas of the UE 115-c (e.g., the minimum number of antennas that the UE 115-c may have to be able to request additional system information), or both. As another example, the set of thresholds may include thresholds associated with the signal quality of a signal received at the UE 115 (e.g., an RSRP threshold, an RSRQ threshold, an RSSI threshold, an SNR threshold, an SINR threshold), thresholds associated with the number of requests for additional system information that the UE 115-c may send (e.g., the maximum number of requests that the UE 115-c may send), or any combination thereof.

[0193] The base station 105-b may indicate a threshold set via the first system information to indicate which UEs 115 may be allowed to request additional system information. In order to request the additional system information, the UE 115-c may be required to meet one or more thresholds (e.g., all) in the threshold set. In this regard, the UE 115-c may be configured to determine the threshold set and determine whether the UE 115-c meets the one or more thresholds in order to determine whether the UE 115-c is able to send a request for additional system information.

[0194] At 335, the UE 115-c, the base station 105-b, or both may determine a set of additional system information (e.g., RB-SIB1, RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) that may be requested from the base station 105-b. In other words, the UE 115-c may determine what type of additional system information may be obtained. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine the set of additional system information that may be requested based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information (if any), based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine the set of additional system information that may be requested based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for the dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for a UE 115 with reduced capability may be obtained at 320, determining a threshold for sending a request at 330, or any combination thereof.

[0195] The additional system information that may be obtained may include SSBs, other downlink broadcast reference signals, COREST, common search space (CSS) configurations for random access procedures, paging and system information update information, or any combination thereof. Additionally or alternatively, the additional system information may include a second type of SIB (e.g., a second type different from the first type of SIB associated with the first system information), a second type of MIB (e.g., a second type different from the first type of MIB associated with the first system information), or both

[0196] At 340, the UE 115-c, the base station 105-b, or both may determine a set of parameters that the base station 105-b may use to send the additional system information. Additionally or alternatively, the UE 115-c may determine a set of parameters that the UE 115-c may use to receive the additional system information. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine a set of parameters for sending and / or receiving the additional system information based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information, if any, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information, or both. In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine a set of parameters (e.g., resources, BWP) for sending and / or receiving the additional system information based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for the dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for a reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained at 320, determining a threshold for sending a request at 330, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested at 335, or any combination thereof.

[0197] In some aspects, the set of parameters that the base station 105-b may use to send the additional system information (e.g., the parameters that the UE 115-c may use to receive the additional system information) may include an MCS, a code rate, a time resource set, a frequency resource set (BWP), a space resource set, or any combination thereof. In this regard, the base station 105-b may indicate and the UE 115-c may determine, based on information included in the dedicated field and / or the configuration information element of the first system information, a coverage enhancement scheme that may be used to send and / or receive the additional system information. In some aspects, one or more parameters in the set of parameters determined at 340 may be different from at least one parameter used to send and / or receive the first system information at 305.

[0198] At 345, the UE 115-c, the base station 105-b, or both may determine a period associated with the additional system information. The period may include a period during which the base station 105-b may send the additional system information. In some cases, the period associated with the additional system information may be different from the period associated with the first system information (e.g., the period during which the first system information is transmitted or broadcast). In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine the period associated with the additional system information based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information (if any), based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information, or both.

[0199] In some aspects, the periodicity of the additional system information may depend on the content of the additional system information (e.g., based on the type of the additional system information). In this regard, the periodicity of the additional system information may be based on whether the additional system information includes SSBs, other downlink broadcast reference signals (e.g., broadcast reference signals for synchronization, radio resource management (RRM), radio link monitoring (RLM)), COREST, CSS configuration for scheduling system information and random access procedures, paging and system information update information, a second type of SIB, a second type of MIB, or any combination thereof.

[0200] In this regard, the UE 115-c may determine a period associated with additional system information based on receiving first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for a reduced-capability UE 115 may be obtained at 320, determining a threshold for sending a request at 330, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested at 335, determining parameters for sending / receiving additional system information at 340, or any combination thereof.

[0201] At 350, the UE 115-c may send a request for additional system information. In some aspects, the UE 115-c may send the request for additional system information based on information included within a dedicated field of the first system information (if any), based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information, or both. Additionally or alternatively, the UE 115-c may send the request for additional system information via an uplink BWP dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115. In this regard, the UE 115-c may send the request for additional system information based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for the dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 can be obtained at 320, determining a threshold for sending the request at 330, determining a set of additional system information that can be requested at 335, determining a parameter for sending / receiving the additional system information at 340, determining a periodicity of the additional system information at 345, or any combination thereof.

[0202] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may determine a system information request mode at 315, and may send a request for additional system information based on the determined system information request mode. For example, the determined system information request mode may be associated with a given set of resources (e.g., PRACH resources, SRS resources, PUSCH resources, PUCCH resources, BWP, or any combination thereof), and the UE 115-c may send the request at 350 based on (e.g., based on) the determined set of resources. For example, depending on the determined system information request mode, the UE 115-c may send the request at 350 via a set of resources associated with PRACH, SRS, PUSCH, PUCCH, uplink BWP, or any combination thereof.

[0203] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may send the request at 350 based on a determination that the UE 115-c satisfies at least one threshold in the set of thresholds determined at 330. For example, the set of thresholds may include a minimum bandwidth capability threshold. In this example, the UE 115-c may determine that the bandwidth capabilities of the UE 115-c meet (e.g., exceed) the minimum bandwidth capability threshold, and may therefore send the request at 350 based on a determination that the UE 115-c satisfies the minimum bandwidth capability threshold. As previously mentioned herein, the UE 115-c may be configured to determine at 350 that it may send the request based on a determination that it satisfies only a subset of the set of thresholds, a determination that it satisfies every threshold in the set of thresholds, or both.

[0204] In some aspects, the UE 115-c may indicate to the base station 105-b, via the request and / or another uplink transmission, an indication of which additional system information is being requested, an indication of one or more parameters (e.g., a coverage enhancement scheme) that the base station 105-b may use to send the additional system information, or both. For example, the UE 115-c may determine a set of additional system information that may be requested at 335. In this example, the UE 115-c may determine (e.g., select) which additional system information to request from the set of additional system information, and may indicate to the base station 105-b, via the request and / or another uplink transmission, the determined (e.g., selected) additional system information.

[0205] As another example, at 340 UE 115-c may determine a set of parameters (e.g., coverage enhancement scheme, MCS, code rate, time / frequency resources) that base station 105-b may use to send additional system information. In this example, UE 115-c may determine (e.g., select) one or more parameters from the set of parameters to be used by base station 105-b to send additional system information, and may indicate the determined (e.g., selected) parameters to base station 105-b via a request and / or another uplink transmission. For example, UE 115-c may determine a set of MCSs that may be used by base station 105-b to send additional system information, and may indicate in a request which MCS base station 105-b should use to send the additional system information. In some cases, the parameters selected and indicated to base station 105-b that base station 105-b may use to send additional system information may be different from at least one parameter that base station 105-b may use to send the first system information at 305.

[0206] In some cases, the UE 115-c may be configured to obtain the additional system information without sending a request, and may therefore avoid sending a request at 350. For example, in some cases, the system information request mode determined at 315 may indicate that the UE 115-c does not need to send a request for additional system information. In this example, the UE 115-c may be configured to avoid sending a request at 350, and may instead monitor the additional system information to obtain the additional system information according to the determined system information request mode.

[0207] At 355, the UE 115-c may obtain (e.g., receive) additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115. In some aspects, the additional system information may include a second type of SIB (e.g., RB-SIB2, RB-SIB3) different from the first type of SIB associated with the first system information, a second type of MIB different from the first type of MIB associated with the first system information, or any combination thereof. For example, if additional SSBs (e.g., PSS, SSS, PBCH) are sent for the reduced capability UE 115 in a separately configured downlink BWP, the additional MIB may also be sent in the PBCH as part of the additional system information.

[0208] The UE 115-c may obtain the additional system information 220 at 355 based on information included in a dedicated field of the first system information when the dedicated field is present, based on information included within a configuration information element of the first system information when the dedicated field is not present, or both. For example, the UE 115-c may obtain the additional system information via a downlink BWP that is associated with (e.g., dedicated to) the reduced capability UE 115.

[0209] In this regard, the UE 115-c may obtain (e.g., receive) additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 based on receiving the first system information at 305, evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field at 310, determining a system information request mode at 315, determining whether additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 may be obtained at 320, determining a threshold for sending a request at 330, determining a set of additional system information that may be requested at 335, determining parameters for sending / receiving the additional system information at 340, determining a periodicity for the additional system information at 345, sending a request at 350, or any combination thereof. Furthermore, the UE 115-c may be configured to obtain the additional system information based on indicating to the base station 105-b which additional system information is being requested, which parameters the base station 105-b will use to send the additional system information, or any combination thereof.

[0210] In some cases, the base station 105-b may be configured to determine a number of reduced-capability UEs 115 that are communicatively coupled to the base station 105-b. The base station 105-b may determine the number of reduced-capability UEs 115 that are communicatively coupled to the base station 105-b in order to determine whether it should continue to send (e.g., broadcast) additional system information or whether it may end the broadcast of the additional system information. In some aspects, the base station 105-b may be configured to avoid sending (e.g., broadcasting) additional system information (e.g., end the broadcast of the additional system information) if the base station 105-b determines that the number of reduced-capability UEs 115 that are communicatively coupled to the base station 105-b is less than a threshold number of reduced-capability UEs 115. For example, the base station 105-b may be configured to avoid sending (e.g., broadcasting) additional system information if the base station 105-b determines that there are no reduced-capability UEs 115 that are communicatively coupled to the base station 105-b. Additionally or alternatively, the base station 105-b may be configured to avoid sending additional system information at 355 after a predetermined time, after a predetermined number of broadcasts, or any combination thereof when the UE 115-c requesting the additional system information is no longer in wireless communication with the base station 105-b.

[0211] Techniques described herein may provide for on-demand broadcasting of system information, which may reduce signaling overhead and result in more efficient use of resources within a wireless communication system, such as, for example, wireless communication system 100 or 200. Specifically, techniques described herein may enable a base station 105-b of a wireless communication system to broadcast additional system information upon request, thereby reducing signaling overhead and preventing wasted resources in situations where there are few (or no) UEs 115 with reduced capabilities that want to receive the additional system information.

[0212] Figure 4 A resource configuration 400 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. Aspects of the resource configuration 400 may implement or be implemented by aspects of the wireless communication system 100, the wireless communication system 200, the process flow 300, or any combination thereof.

[0213] As mentioned previously herein, some wireless communication systems (e.g., wireless communication systems 100, 200) may be configured with BWPs associated with or dedicated to reduced capability UEs 115 and / or regular UEs 115. In some cases, the wireless communication system may include different sets of downlink and uplink BWPs that are dedicated to reduced capability UEs 115 and regular UEs 115, respectively. For example, Figure 4 As shown, the wireless communication system can be configured with a resource configuration 400, which includes an initial uplink BWP 410 and an initial downlink BWP 415 for a regular UE 115. The initial downlink BWP 415 can be associated with a cell-defined SSB (CD-SSB). In addition, the wireless communication system can be configured with an initial uplink BWP 420, an initial downlink BWP 425, an active uplink BWP 430, and an active downlink BWP 435 for a UE 115 with reduced capabilities. Each of the corresponding BWPs of the resource configuration 400 can be included within the carrier bandwidth 405 of the corresponding network or serving cell.

[0214] In some aspects, the corresponding BWP of the resource configuration 400 can be pre-configured, configured via control signaling (e.g., RRC signaling, MAC-CE signaling, SIB message), or both. The BWPs dedicated to the reduced-capability UE 115 (e.g., initial uplink BWP 420, initial downlink BWP 425, active uplink BWP 430, and active downlink BWP 435) can span a smaller bandwidth than the BWPs for regular UEs 115, and can be configured so as not to exceed the expected maximum bandwidth capability supported by the reduced-capability UE 115.

[0215] In some aspects, a regular UE 115 (e.g., a non-reduced capability UE 115) may be configured to communicate via an initial uplink BWP 410 and an initial downlink BWP 415. Additionally or alternatively, a regular UE 115 may be configured to communicate via a BWP (e.g., an initial uplink BWP 420, an initial downlink BWP 425, an active uplink BWP 430, and an active downlink BWP 435) dedicated to a reduced capability UE 115. In contrast, a reduced capability UE 115 may not be able to communicate via a BWP associated with a regular UE 115 (e.g., dedicated to a regular UE 115), and may therefore communicate via a BWP (e.g., an initial uplink BWP 420, an initial downlink BWP 425, an active uplink BWP 430, and an active downlink BWP 435) dedicated to a reduced capability UE 115. Specifically, the reduced capability UE 115 may receive system information (e.g., the first information 210), additional system information (e.g., the additional system information 220), or both via a downlink BWP dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115, and may send a request for additional system information via an uplink BWP dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115.

[0216] For example, when performing the initial access process, the UE 115 with reduced capability (e.g., UE 115-a, 115-c with reduced capability) can select a serving cell, and can detect an uplink signal configuration or an uplink channel configuration for sending an ODSI request. Each corresponding uplink signal / channel configuration can be associated with a corresponding resource configuration (e.g., resource configuration 400), and the resource configuration includes a resource set (BWP) associated with a conventional and / or reduced UE 115 or dedicated to a conventional and / or reduced UE 115 with reduced capability. The UE 115 with reduced capability can send an ODSI request on a pre-configured uplink signal / channel based on the uplink signal / channel configuration. For example, the UE 115 can send an ODSI request via an initial uplink BWP 420 associated with the UE 115 with reduced capability (e.g., dedicated to the UE 115 with reduced capability).

[0217] Upon receiving the ODSI request from the reduced capability UE 115, the network (e.g., base station 105-a, 105-b) may begin broadcasting RB-SSBs, RB-MIBs, and / or RB-SIBs dedicated to the reduced capability UE 115 via the initial downlink BWP 425 associated with the reduced capability UE 115. System information updates for the reduced capability UE 115 may be transmitted via a dedicated RB-SIB message on the initial downlink BWP 425. In addition, msg2 and msg4 of the four-step RACH procedure may be sent via the initial downlink BWP 425, as well as msgB of the two-step RACH procedure and PDCCH scheduling for msg2, msg4, msgB, and retransmissions for msg3. In some aspects, the initial downlink / uplink configuration for the UE 115 with reduced capability (e.g., the configuration of the initial uplink BWP 420 and the initial downlink BWP 425) may be included in or signaled via the system information for cell selection, or may be included in a system information update for the UE 115 with reduced capability.

[0218] After the initial access process, after the RRC connection is established, the UE 115 with reduced capability can be switched to a pair of active uplink / downlink BWPs. For example, the UE 115 can be switched from the initial uplink BWP 420 and the initial downlink BWP 425 to the active uplink BWP 430 and the active downlink BWP 435. The UE 115 can switch between the initial and active BWPs by performing a BWP switching process. In some aspects, the active uplink BWP 430 and the active downlink BWP 435 can be configured or signaled by an RB-SIB, which is sent in the initial downlink BWP 425 dedicated to the UE 115 with reduced capability. The active downlink BWP 435 for the UE 115 with reduced capability may or may not include a dedicated SSB. In some aspects, the UE 115 with reduced capability can measure a periodic tracking reference signal (TRS) and / or a periodic CSI-RS in the active downlink BWP 435. Additionally or alternatively, in the event that SSBs are not transmitted in the active downlink BWP 435, the reduced capability UE 115 may switch to the initial downlink BWP 425 to measure the SSBs. A common search space (CSS) and layer 3 (L3) measurement gaps may be configured for paging and wake-up signals (WUS) in the active downlink BWP 435. Furthermore, system information updates for the reduced capability UE 115 may be based on paging, dedicated RRC signaling, or both. For example, in the event that a paging search space is not configured, system information updates may be transmitted via dedicated RRC signaling on the active downlink BWP 435.

[0219] Figure 5 A block diagram 500 of a device 505 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 505 may be an example of aspects of a user equipment (UE) 115 as described herein. The device 505 may include a receiver 510, a transmitter 515, and a communication manager 520. The device 505 may also include a processor. Each of these components may communicate with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0220] The receiver 510 may provide a means for receiving information (such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof) associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, information channels related to techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI). The information may be communicated to other components of the device 505. The receiver 510 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of multiple antennas.

[0221] The transmitter 515 may provide a means for transmitting signals generated by other components of the device 505. For example, the transmitter 515 may transmit information (such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof) associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels related to size-based neural network selection for autoencoder-based communications, data channels, information channels). In some examples, the transmitter 515 may be co-located with the receiver 510 in a transceiver module. The transmitter 515 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of multiple antennas.

[0222] The communication manager 520, the receiver 510, the transmitter 515, or various combinations thereof, or various components thereof may be examples of means for performing various aspects of the techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI described herein.

[0223] In some examples, communication manager 520, receiver 510, transmitter 515, or various combinations or components thereof may be implemented in hardware (e.g., in communication management circuitry). The circuitry may include a processor, a digital signal processor (DSP), an application specific integrated circuit (ASIC), a field programmable gate array (FPGA) or other programmable logic device, discrete gate or transistor logic, discrete hardware components, or any combination thereof designed to perform the functions described in the present disclosure.

[0224] Additionally or alternatively, in some examples, the communication manager 520, the receiver 510, the transmitter 515, or various combinations or components thereof may be implemented in code executed by a processor (e.g., as communication management software or firmware). If implemented in code executed by a processor, the functionality of the communication manager 520, the receiver 510, the transmitter 515, or various combinations or components thereof may be performed by a general purpose processor, a DSP, a central processing unit (CPU), an ASIC, an FPGA, or any combination of these or other programmable logic devices.

[0225] In some examples, communication manager 520 can be configured to perform various operations (e.g., receive, monitor, transmit) using or otherwise cooperating with receiver 510, transmitter 515, or both. For example, communication manager 520 can receive information from receiver 510, send information to transmitter 515, or be integrated in conjunction with receiver 510, transmitter 515, or both to receive information, send information, or perform various other operations as described herein.

[0226] According to an example as disclosed herein, the communication manager 520 may support wireless communication at a UE. For example, the communication manager 520 may be configured to provide or support a unit for receiving first system information from a base station, the first system information being for a reduced capability UE including a UE having a bandwidth capability below a threshold, the UE being a reduced capability UE. The communication manager 520 may be configured to provide or support a unit for evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field, the dedicated field including an indicator that additional system information for the reduced capability UE will be received in response to an on-demand request. The communication manager 520 may be configured to provide or support a unit for the following operations: when the dedicated field is included in the first system information, obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE according to information included in the dedicated field, or when the dedicated field is missing in the first system information, obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE according to information included in a configuration information element of the first system information.

[0227] By including or configuring the communication manager 520 according to examples as described herein, the device 505 (e.g., a processor controlling or otherwise coupled to the receiver 510, the transmitter 515, the communication manager 520, or a combination thereof) can support improved techniques for on-demand broadcasting of system information for reduced capability UEs 115, which can reduce signaling overhead and result in more efficient use of resources within the wireless communication system. Specifically, the techniques described herein can enable the reduced capability UE 115 to determine whether additional system information is available to be received in response to an on-demand request based on information included in the first system information, thereby enabling the base station 105 to broadcast additional system information for the reduced capability UE 115 as needed, which can reduce signaling overhead and prevent waste of resources when there are few (or no) reduced capability UEs 115 to receive additional system information.

[0228] Based on obtaining additional system information for a UE 115 with reduced capabilities according to information included in the first system information, a processor of the UE 115 (e.g., a processor controlling the receiver 510, the communication manager 520, the transmitter 515, etc.) can reduce processing resources used to obtain the additional system information. For example, by enabling the UE 115 to efficiently determine whether the additional system information is obtainable in response to an on-demand request (and / or without a request), the techniques described herein can reduce the duration that the UE 115 spends monitoring the additional system information, which can reduce power consumption and signaling associated with monitoring the additional system information. By reducing power consumption, the battery life of the UE 115 can be improved. In addition, reducing the duration that the UE 115 spends monitoring the additional system information can result in faster and more efficient acquisition of the additional system information, thereby improving the user experience.

[0229] Figure 6 A block diagram 600 of a device 605 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI according to aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The device 605 may be an example of aspects of the device 505 or UE 115 as described herein. The device 605 may include a receiver 610, a transmitter 615, and a communication manager 620. The device 605 may also include a processor. Each of these components may communicate with each other (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0230] The receiver 610 may provide a means for receiving information (such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof) associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels, data channels, information channels related to techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI). The information may be communicated to other components of the device 605. The receiver 610 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of multiple antennas.

[0231] The transmitter 615 may provide a means for transmitting signals generated by other components of the device 605. For example, the transmitter 615 may transmit information (such as packets, user data, control information, or any combination thereof) associated with various information channels (e.g., control channels related to size-based neural network selection for autoencoder-based communications, data channels, information channels). In some examples, the transmitter 615 may be co-located with the receiver 610 in a transceiver module. The transmitter 615 may utilize a single antenna or a collection of multiple antennas.

[0232] The device 605 or its various components may be examples of units for performing various aspects of the technology for adaptively requesting ODSI as described herein. For example, the communication manager 620 may include a first system information reception manager 625, a dedicated field manager 630, an additional system information reception manager 635, or any combination thereof. The communication manager 620 may be an example of various aspects of the communication manager 420 as described herein. In some examples, the communication manager 620 or its various components may be configured to perform various operations (e.g., receive, monitor, send) using the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, or both or in other ways in cooperation with the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, or both. For example, the communication manager 620 may receive information from the receiver 610, send information to the transmitter 615, or be integrated with the receiver 610, the transmitter 615, or both to receive information, send information, or perform various other operations as described herein.

[0233] According to an example as disclosed herein, the communication manager 620 may support wireless communication at a UE. A first system information reception manager 625 may be configured to provide or support a unit for receiving first system information from a base station, the first system information being for a reduced capability UE including a UE having a bandwidth capability below a threshold, the UE being a reduced capability UE. A dedicated field manager 630 may be configured to provide or support a unit for evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field, the dedicated field including an indicator that additional system information for the reduced capability UE will be received in response to an on-demand request. An additional system information reception manager 635 may be configured to provide or support a unit for the following operations: when a dedicated field is included in the first system information, obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE according to information included in the dedicated field, or when a dedicated field is missing in the first system information, obtaining additional system information for the reduced capability UE according to information included in a configuration information element of the first system information.

[0234] Figure 7 A block diagram 700 of a communication manager 720 supporting techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI according to various aspects of the present disclosure is shown. The communication manager 720 may be an example of aspects of the communication manager 520, the communication manager 620, or both as described herein. The communication manager 720 or its various components may be examples of units for performing various aspects of the techniques for adaptively requesting ODSI as described herein. For example, the communication manager 720 may include a first system information reception manager 725, a dedicated field manager 730, an additional system information reception manager 735, a request transmission manager 740, a system information request mode manager 745, an additional system information parameter manager 750, an additional system information cycle manager 755, or any combination thereof. Each of these components may communicate with each other directly or indirectly (e.g., via one or more buses).

[0235] According to an example as disclosed herein, the communication manager 720 may support wireless communication at a UE. [0254] According to an example as disclosed herein, the communication manager 810 may support wireless communication at a UE. For example, the communication manager 810 may be configured to provide or support a unit for receiving first system information from a base station, the first system information being for a reduced capability UE including a UE having a bandwidth capability below a threshold, the UE being a reduced capability UE. The communication manager 810 may be configured to provide or support a unit for evaluating the first system information for a dedicated field, the dedicated field including an indicator that additional system information for the reduced capability UE will be received in response to an on-demand request.
