Description

Technical Field

[0001] The invention relates to a bracket forming part of an anti-tip device of a drawer cabinet, a drawer comprising such a bracket and a drawer cabinet comprising such a drawer. Background Art

[0002] A chest of drawers is a classic piece of furniture for storing items at home. The width and depth of a chest of drawers are usually significantly less than the height, respectively. Thus, a large storage capacity is provided while only a limited floor space is required. Each drawer defines a storage volume, and when the drawer is opened, the center of mass will shift. In most cases, this is never a problem, because the basic operating principle of a chest of drawers is to pull out the drawer to obtain the contents. However, it is never possible to foresee how a piece of furniture is used in practice, and in the worst case, a chest of drawers may topple over and cause serious personal injury. A typical risk is when a drawer at a higher level is filled with heavy objects and opened, or when someone leans on a chest of drawers or a drawer pulled out or against a chest of drawers or a drawer pulled out to seek support. Someone leaning on a chest of drawers or a drawer pulled out or against a chest of drawers or a drawer pulled out to seek support may occur especially when a child uses a chest of drawers, whether when trying to obtain its contents by climbing or just playing around.

[0003] As a safety measure, it is known to secure the chest of drawers against a wall using different types of brackets, thereby preventing any tipping. However, even if the chest of drawers is delivered with brackets and the manual clearly states that the brackets should be installed before using the chest of drawers, users often decide not to install the brackets.

[0004] There is also a solution to prevent more than one drawer from being opened at a time. In US 4 768 844, a solution is disclosed. In this locking system, each drawer is provided with an actuator pin, and each drawer is also configured to cause a longitudinal displacement of a corresponding locking rod via a corresponding pivotable cam mechanism interacting with the actuator pin, and the locking rod is received in a common guide channel in the wall portion of the cabinet. The displacement of one or more locking rods causes the compression of a common spring received in a gap with a fixed length. The fixed length of the gap is selected to allow the displacement of a locking rod, which is necessary to open a drawer, and the displacement is the result of the cam mechanism pivoting of a single drawer. Thus, only one drawer can be opened at a time. Due to the fixed length of the gap, the system has an inherent mechanical limitation, which prevents two or more drawers from being opened simultaneously.

[0005] However, from the user's point of view, it is important that she can use the chest of drawers according to her needs and is not limited to opening one drawer at a time. From a safety point of view, this must be done in a safe way without causing the cabinet to tip over. A straightforward solution to overturn a locking system of the type given above and thus indirectly to put aside the tip-over protection is that, in the case of a type of furniture piece to be assembled by the user, the user does not install the actuator pin or removes the actuator pin. From a safety point of view, any such move is unacceptable and, therefore, a solution that satisfies the above-mentioned problems needs to be found. Summary of the invention

[0006] The object of the present invention is to provide a bracket configured to form part of an anti-tip device of a chest of drawers, which bracket at least partially overcomes the above mentioned disadvantages and risks.

[0007] More precisely, the brackets should be of a design that must be installed in an order that allows the chest of drawers to be used correctly.

[0008] Another object is to provide a bracket of universal design which allows it to be used in various variants of chest of drawers.

[0009] These and other objects are provided by a bracket. The bracket forms part of an anti-tipping device of a drawer cabinet. The bracket comprises a body having a support portion and a locking portion arranged side by side when viewed along a first longitudinal extension. The body is configured to be mounted to an outer wall portion of a side panel of a drawer.

[0010] The locking portion has a through opening configured to receive a fastening device. The fastening device can extend through the through opening of the locking portion and extend into the end edge of the rear panel of the drawer.

[0011] The locking portion includes a locking projection extending along a second longitudinal extension transverse to the first longitudinal extension. The locking portion is configured to receive a head of a fastening device.

[0012] The bracket is configured to be oriented such that the second longitudinal extension extends perpendicular to the end edge of the rear panel.

[0013] The support portion comprises an actuator pin extending along the second longitudinal extension. Therefore, the actuator pin extends outwardly away from the outer wall portion of the side panel.

[0014] Therefore, a kind of support is provided, and this support forms the part of the anti-tipping device of drawer cabinet. The device for anti-tipping is well known to the technician. As the common feature of this device, each drawer is provided with the actuator pin that is configured to interact with the drawer locking device to selectively allow only one drawer to be opened at a time. The concept of the present invention is that the actuator pin is arranged on the support that constitutes the necessary parts to allow the assembly of drawer.More precisely, in addition to the actuator pin, the support that forms a part of the present invention is also provided with a locking part, and this locking part is configured to support the fastening device that interconnects the side panel of the drawer with the rear panel. This ensures that the actuator pin is correctly installed and used when assembling the drawer. This increases the possibility of correctly using the drawer cabinet, and therefore reduces the risk of injury caused by the drawer cabinet tipping over.

[0015] As a further advantage, where the chest of drawers and its drawers are of the type configured to be assembled by an end user, the components can be packaged in a flat container without any protruding components.

[0016] In one embodiment, the support portion of the bracket may have a first support protrusion having a substantially circular outer boundary portion. Thus, the first support portion can be configured to be received in a recess formed in the outer wall portion of the side panel of the drawer in a completely or partially countersunk manner. By means of a circular boundary, the recess can be formed by drilling rather than by milling. Drilling requires a strict linear motion of the tool, while milling requires the tool to move on the surface. Thus, a very time-saving manufacturing process for the side panel is provided. The recess is preferably arranged as a blind hole, i.e. a non-through recess.

[0017] In one embodiment, the support portion may have a first support protrusion and a second support protrusion, the first support protrusion having a substantially circular outer boundary portion, the second support protrusion having a substantially circular outer boundary portion, the first support protrusion and the second support protrusion being arranged side by side when viewed along the first longitudinal extension range, and wherein the first support protrusion and the second support protrusion are arranged as discrete protrusions or as two protrusions partially merged with each other.

[0018] Thus, the first support protrusion and the second support protrusion can be configured to be received in a recess formed in the outer wall portion of the side panel of the drawer in a completely or partially countersunk manner, wherein the recess is formed by drilling rather than milling. The two drilled recesses can be formed as discrete recesses, one recess per protrusion, or arranged in a partially overlapping position, i.e. the recesses partially merge with each other. Thus, a very time-saving manufacturing process of the side panel is provided. In addition, by being configured to receive two support protrusions in corresponding recesses in the side panel, the bracket can be effectively prevented from rotating during installation.

[0019] The one or more recesses are preferably arranged as blind holes, ie as non-through recesses.

[0020] In one embodiment, the locking portion may have a substantially circular outer boundary portion, the locking projection and the first supporting projection being arranged side by side when viewed along the first longitudinal extension. Thus, the locking projection and the first supporting projection may be configured to be received in a recess formed in the outer wall portion of the side panel of the drawer in a fully or partially countersunk manner, wherein the recess is formed by drilling rather than milling. The two drilled recesses may be formed as discrete recesses, one recess per projection, or arranged in a partially overlapping position, i.e. the recesses partially merge with each other.

[0021] The bracket may include a flexible tongue that supports the actuator pin.

[0022] Known devices for providing anti-tipping generally include a track with one locking member per drawer. The track is mounted to one of the inner side walls of the cabinet arranged parallel to the side walls of the drawer. When the drawer is first inserted into the cabinet, the actuator pin must be pushed through the track. By arranging the actuator pin on a flexible tongue, this movement is easier because the tongue can be forced to temporarily flex inwards, thereby allowing the actuator pin to pass through the track.

[0023] The actuator pin is preferably arranged on the free end of the flexible tongue.

[0024] The actuator pin may include a ramp in a free end portion thereof, the ramp having a slope sloping downwardly toward the locking portion.

[0025] In one embodiment, the flexible tongue may be arranged in the first support protrusion. In another embodiment, the flexible tongue may be arranged in the second support protrusion.

[0026] The position of the flexible tongue in the bracket is determined by the type of drawer to be used in the cabinet of the drawer cabinet. The drawer can have an inner drawer front or an outer drawer front as known in the art. The length of the side panel is different between the two. However, by providing two types of brackets with actuator pins in different positions, the actuator pin will always be arranged in the same position relative to the locking device when supported by the drawer, and the locking device is configured to be installed in the drawer cabinet and the actuator pin is intended to interact with the locking device. Whether a specific drawer is an inner drawer front or an outer drawer front, this is applicable. In addition, by providing two versions of brackets with flexible tongues in two different positions, the number of article numbers to be monitored in a commercial system can be significantly reduced. More precisely, there is no need to make any changes to the cabinet, the locking device in the cabinet or the side panel of the drawer according to the type of the drawer front, and only two different brackets with flexible tongues in two different positions and therefore the actuator pins in two different positions need to be provided.

[0027] The flexible tongue may comprise a free end portion facing away from the locking portion.

[0028] In one embodiment of the bracket, the locking portion of the connecting portion may include a recess extending along the second longitudinal extension, thereby allowing the head of the fastening device to be countersunk relative to the outer main surface of the body of the bracket when viewed in a state where the bracket is mounted to the side panel of the drawer.

[0029] The first major surface portion of the body extending on the first support portion may form an angle of 0.5 to 2 degrees relative to the second major surface portion of the body extending on the locking portion. With this angle, when the bracket is mounted into the recess in the wall portion of the side panel, an inherent spring action is provided that will help to hold the bracket in place.

[0030] In one embodiment, the bracket may be mirror-symmetrical when viewed relative to an imaginary plane extending along the first longitudinal extension and the second longitudinal extension. Thus, the bracket may be mounted to the left or right side panel of a single drawer, depending on whether the locking device is arranged on the left or right side of the inner wall of the cabinet. Depending on the size of the drawer and the type of drawer cabinet, each drawer may have a bracket on both of its side panels or only on one of its side panels.

[0031] According to another aspect of the present invention, there is provided a drawer comprising: a first side panel and a second side panel; a rear panel extending between two opposite end edges abutting against inner wall portions of the first and second side panels and having said two end edges; and a bracket according to any one of claims 1 to 9, arranged on an outer wall portion of one of the first and second side panels, and wherein the fastening means is arranged to extend through a locking portion of the bracket, through one of the first or second side panels and into an end edge of the rear panel.

[0032] Thus, by the design of the bracket and its position on the side panel relative to the rear panel, the bracket must be used to allow the correct assembly of a single drawer. Furthermore, since the actuator pin is an integral part of the bracket, the likelihood of correct use of the chest of drawers and prevention of tipping over is significantly increased, simply because the user cannot intentionally omit the installation of the bracket with the actuator pin. Thus, the risk of injury caused by tipping over is reduced.

[0033] The outer wall portion of one of the first and second side panels of the drawer may include a recess arrangement structure configured to receive the support portion and the locking portion of the bracket. The recess may be complementary to the outer boundary of the rear side of the body.

[0034] In one embodiment, one of the first and second side panels or each of the first and second side panels may include a recess arrangement structure, wherein the recess arrangement structure includes a first recess portion having a first circular boundary portion and a second recess portion having a second circular boundary portion, and the first recess portion and the second recess portion are arranged side by side as discrete recesses or recesses merging into each other when viewed along the first longitudinal extension range.

[0035] The two recessed portions may be formed by drilling. The two drilled recessed portions may be formed as discrete recesses, one recessed portion per protrusion of the bracket, or arranged in a partially overlapping position. Thereby, a very time-saving manufacturing process of the side panel is provided compared to milling. Furthermore, the recessed arrangement with two recessed portions ensures an intuitive mounting of the bracket and also prevents displacement of the bracket during use.

[0036] The recess arrangement is preferably arranged as a blind hole, ie a non-through recess.

[0037] The recess arrangement structure may further include a third recess portion having a substantially circular boundary portion, the third recess portion being arranged side by side with the first recess portion and the second recess portion as discrete recesses or recesses partially merged with each other when viewed along the first direction. The first recess, the second recess and the third recess are preferably formed by drilling.

[0038] According to another aspect, a drawer cabinet is provided. The drawer cabinet comprises: at least two drawers according to the second aspect; and a drawer locking device, the drawer locking device comprising a longitudinally extending guide track connected to an inner side wall of the drawer cabinet, the longitudinally extending guide track being provided with a pivotable locking member for each bracket. The locking device also comprises a driver. The driver may be a driver in the form of a protrusion.

[0039] In one embodiment, the guide rail is received in a vertically extending groove formed in a side wall of the drawer cabinet.

[0040] In another embodiment, each locking member of the locking device further comprises two fingers defining a gap therebetween. The gap is designed to receive the actuator protrusion of the bracket.

[0041] In another embodiment, the guide track of the locking device further comprises a stop member arranged at the upper end portion of the guide track. The stop member has a spring that can be compressed a predetermined distance relative to the stop member. The distance is limited to allow only one drawer to be opened at a time. Since the spring is compressed to a predetermined distance when one drawer in the drawer cabinet is opened, the remaining drawers are prevented from being opened at the same time.

[0042] In another embodiment, the upper edge portion of the corresponding locking member includes a cam surface that interacts with a cam-shaped pusher. The uppermost pusher interacts with the spring, while the subsequent pushers each interact indirectly with the spring via a rod slidably received in the guide track. This is beneficial because when any of the locking members in the locking member below the uppermost locking member is pivoted, one or more rods of one or more locking members located above the pivoted locking member will be pushed upward, thereby acting on the spring of the stop member to compress the spring. Therefore, no matter which locking member is pivoted, the total compressed length of the spring will be the same. The limited allowed compression of the spring allowed by the stop member allows only one drawer to be opened at a time.

[0043] Thus, each locking member selectively engages an actuator pin of a bracket on an associated drawer and selectively allows only one drawer to be opened at a time.

[0044] In one embodiment, the chest of drawers may also include an anchor bracket, which includes a first bracket member and a second bracket member. The second bracket member is slidably received in the first bracket member, so that the second bracket member can move between the first position and the second position relative to the first bracket member. The first bracket member has a through opening, and the second bracket member has a guide slot, which includes a first slot portion and a second slot portion extending vertically at an angle to the first slot portion. The driver of the locking device is received in the through opening and the guide slot. In the first position, the locking member engages the associated actuator pin of the bracket, and when the second bracket member moves from the first position to the second position, the driver is displaced from the first slot portion to the second slot portion. Therefore, the driver vertically displaces the locking device, thereby releasing the associated actuator pin of each locking member. The anchor bracket is therefore configured to set the drawer locking device to a passive mode when the second bracket member moves to the second position, in which the chest of drawers can be anchored to the wall using the anchor bracket, in which the user can selectively open any drawer and any number of drawers at the same time.

[0045] In one embodiment, the guide groove is V-shaped, and the first groove portion has a longitudinal extension consistent with the movement direction of the second bracket component relative to the first bracket component. The angle of the V-shaped guide groove can be varied to adjust the force required to move the second bracket component relative to the first bracket component.

[0046] In another embodiment, the anchor bracket further comprises a mounting portion having a through hole. The hole can be used to anchor the anchor bracket to a structure or a wall using, for example, a screw or other fastening means.

[0047] On the other hand, an anti-dumping system including a bracket, a locking device and an anchor bracket is provided. The bracket includes a body having a support portion and a locking portion arranged side by side when viewed along a first longitudinal extension range. The locking portion includes a through opening and a locking protrusion, both of which extend along a second longitudinal extension range transverse to the first longitudinal extension range. The support portion includes an actuator pin extending along the second longitudinal extension range. The locking device includes a longitudinally extending guide track and a driver, wherein the guide track is provided with a pivotable locking member for each bracket. The anchor bracket includes a first bracket member and a second bracket member, the second bracket member being slidably received in the first bracket member, whereby the second bracket member can move between a first position and a second position relative to the first bracket member. The first bracket member has a through opening, and the second bracket member has a guide slot, the guide slot including a first slot portion and a second slot portion extending vertically at an angle to the first slot portion. The driver is received in the through opening and the guide slot. In the first position, the locking member engages the associated actuator pin of the bracket. When the second bracket member moves from the first position to the second position, the driver is displaced from the first slot portion to the second slot portion. This causes the driver to vertically displace the locking device and thus the locking members, thereby causing each locking member to release the associated actuator pin.

[0048] This is advantageous because the anti-tip system provides a solution in which the engagement of the actuator protrusion of the bracket provided by the locking member is set in a passive mode once the second bracket member is moved from the first position to the second position in which the anchor bracket can be anchored to the wall. Thus, the locking device is activated before the anchor bracket is attached to the wall and prevents the user from opening more than one drawer at a time, thereby preventing tipping of the furniture in which the anti-tip system is arranged. Once the user has anchored the anchor bracket to the wall, there is no longer any reason to prevent the user from opening several drawers at the same time.

[0049] In one embodiment, the bracket includes a body, the body is configured to be mounted to the outer wall portion of the side panel of the drawer, and the body has a support portion and a locking portion arranged side by side when viewed along a first longitudinal extension range. The locking portion is configured to receive a fastening device, and the fastening device is configured to extend through the locking portion and extend into the end edge of the back panel of the drawer. The locking portion includes a locking protrusion, which extends along a second longitudinal extension range transverse to the first longitudinal extension range and is configured to receive the head of the fastening device. The bracket is configured to be oriented so that the second longitudinal extension range extends perpendicular to the end edge of the back panel. The support portion includes an actuator pin extending outwardly away from the outer wall portion of the side panel along the second longitudinal extension range.

[0050] In another aspect, an anti-tipping system is provided, the anti-tipping system comprising a bracket, a locking device and an anchor bracket. When the anchor bracket is not anchored to a wall, the bracket and the locking device selectively allow only one drawer of the drawer cabinet to be opened at a time, and when the anchor bracket is anchored to the wall, any number of drawers can be opened simultaneously.

[0051] On the other hand, a method for preventing a drawer from tipping over is provided. The method includes the step of arranging a bracket on the outer wall portion of one of the first side panels and the second side panels of the drawer, the bracket includes a body, the body having a supporting portion and a locking portion arranged side by side when viewed along a first longitudinal extension range, the locking portion includes a through opening and a locking protrusion, both of which extend along a second longitudinal extension range transverse to the first longitudinal extension range, and wherein the supporting portion includes an actuator pin extending along the second longitudinal extension range. Then, the method includes the step of installing a locking device including a longitudinally extending guide rail and a driver on the inner side wall of the drawer. The locking device is provided with a pivotable locking member for each bracket. The method also includes fixing an anchor bracket to the inner side wall of the drawer at a first position, the anchor bracket including a first bracket member and a second bracket member, the second bracket member being received in the first bracket member in a slidable manner, whereby the second bracket member can move between the first position and the second position relative to the first bracket member. The first bracket member has a through opening and the second bracket member has a guide slot including a first slot portion and a second slot portion extending vertically at an angle to the first slot portion. The method then includes arranging the anchor bracket and the locking device so that the driver is received in the through opening and the guide slot and so that each locking member engages an actuator protrusion of the bracket, and moving the second bracket member from the first position to the second position. Finally, the method includes anchoring the anchor bracket to the structure.

[0052] This approach is beneficial for the same reasons as described above with reference to the anti-dump system.

[0062] In the following, we will refer to Figure 1A and Figure 1B A first embodiment of a bracket 1 forming part of an anti-tip device for a chest of drawers according to the invention is discussed. Figure 1A 1 is a perspective view of the bracket 1 as viewed from an upper main surface 2 of the bracket 1 , the upper main surface 2 being configured to extend away from an outer wall portion of a side panel of a drawer. Figure 1B is a perspective view of the bracket 1 as viewed from a lower main surface 3 of the bracket 1, the lower main surface 3 being configured to extend away from the outer wall portion of the side panel.

[0063] As in Figure 1B As best seen in the figure, the lower surface 3 of the bracket 1 comprises a support portion 4 and a locking portion 5. As seen along the first longitudinal extension L1, the support portion 4 and the locking portion 5 are arranged side by side. The support portion 4 and the locking portion 5 are respectively configured to be received in corresponding recessed portions of a recessed arrangement structure formed in an outer wall portion of the side panel, as will be described below with reference to FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D Described.

[0064] The support portion 4 is divided into a first support projection 6A and a second support projection 6A. The bracket may comprise only one support projection or more than two support projections while retaining the functionality.

[0065] The first supporting protrusion 6A has a substantially circular outer boundary portion 7A. The second supporting protrusion 6B has a substantially circular outer boundary portion 7B. As observed along the first longitudinal extension range L1, the first supporting protrusion 6A and the second supporting protrusion 6B are arranged side by side. In addition, the first supporting protrusion 6A and the second supporting protrusion 6B are partially merged with each other along an imaginary overlapping portion extending transversely to the first longitudinal extension range L1. It should be understood that the first supporting protrusion 6A and the second supporting protrusion 6B having a retention function can be arranged as two discrete protrusions. That is, the first supporting protrusion 6A and the second supporting protrusion 6B having a retention function can be arranged as two separately separated and different protrusions.

[0066] The outer envelope surface 8 of each support protrusion 6A, 6B is provided with a plurality of optional radially extending notches 9. The purpose of these notches 9 is to save weight and material of the stent 1. In addition, the inner boundary 10 of each support protrusion 6A, 6B defines three cavities 11. The main purpose of these cavities 11 is to save weight and material of the stent 1. Therefore, it is recognized by those skilled in the art that the outer envelope surface of each support protrusion 6A, 6B having a retention function can be continuous. In addition, it is recognized by those skilled in the art that the design and number of the cavities 11 defined by the inner boundary 10 of each support protrusion 6A, 6B can vary with the retention function.

[0067] The locking portion 5 includes a locking protrusion 12 extending along a second longitudinal extension range L2 transverse to the first longitudinal extension range L1. As observed along the first longitudinal extension range L1, the locking protrusion 12 and the first supporting protrusions 6A, 6B are arranged side by side. In addition, the first supporting protrusion 6A and the locking protrusion 12 are partially merged with each other along an imaginary overlapping portion extending transverse to the first longitudinal extension range L1. It should be understood that the first supporting protrusion 6A with a retention function and the locking protrusion 12 can be arranged as two discrete protrusions. That is, the first supporting protrusion 6A with a retention function and the locking protrusion 12 can be arranged as two separate and different protrusions.

[0068] The locking projection 12 has a substantially circular outer boundary portion 13. The outer envelope surface 14 of the locking projection 12 is provided with a plurality of optional radially extending notches 15. The purpose of these notches 15 is to save weight and material of the stent 1. It is recognized by those skilled in the art that the outer envelope surface 14 of the locking projection 12 having a retaining function may be continuous.

[0069] Now turn to Figure 1A. As viewed along the second longitudinal extension range L2, the locking protrusion 12 has a height H that exceeds the height h of the first support protrusion 6A and the second support protrusion 6B, respectively. As viewed along the second longitudinal extension range L2, the locking protrusion 12 is divided into a first portion 16 and a second portion 17. The first portion 16 adjacent to the lower surface of the bracket 1 is configured to be received in a through opening arranged in a side panel of the drawer. The second portion 17 is configured to be received in a recess formed in an end edge of the rear panel of the drawer. This will be referred to below Figure 2B Further description. The first part 16 and the second part 17 are disclosed as having different diameters, but those skilled in the art recognize that the diameters can be the same. The outer diameter of the second part 17 should be less than the wall thickness of the end edge of the rear panel of the drawer.

[0070] The second portion 17 of the locking projection 12 comprises a radially extending flange 18, see Figure 1B , the radially extending flange 18 defines a through opening 19. The opening 19 is configured to receive a fastening device to be described below, and the head of the fastening device is configured to abut the radially extending flange 18. Thus, a fastening device such as a screw or a bolt is configured to be received in a recess inside the locking projection 12.

[0071] The support portion 4 and the locking portion 5 are supported by the body of the bracket 1 which in turn forms a circumferential flange 20 extending perpendicularly to the second longitudinal extension L2. The flange 20 is configured to abut against the outer surface of a side panel of a drawer.

[0072] Now turning to the second side of the body of the support 1, as in Figure 1A The second side of the bracket 1 comprises a substantially flat main surface. This surface comprises a through opening 21 forming the mouth of the locking projection 12, thereby allowing the fastening device to be inserted into the locking projection 12 along the second longitudinal extension L2.

[0073] The second side of the body of the bracket 1 also includes a flexible tongue 22, which supports an actuator pin 23 on its free end. The actuator pin 23 has an extension along the second longitudinal extension L2 and protrudes in a direction away from the support portion 4 and the locking portion 5, respectively. The flexible tongue 22 is connected to the bracket 1 via a flexure 24, which has a longitudinal extension transverse to the first longitudinal extension L1. The actuator pin 23 may include a ramp 25 in its free end. The ramp 25 preferably has a slope that is inclined towards the locking portion 5.

[0074] In the disclosed embodiment of the support 1, the flexible tongue 22 is arranged in the portion of the body surrounded by the border of the first support projection 6A. In an alternative design of the support 1', such as in Figure 3A and Figure 3B As best seen in FIG. 6 , the flexible tongue 22 may be arranged in a portion of the body surrounded by the borders of the second support projection 6B.

[0075] The position of the flexible tongue 22 in the bracket 1 is determined by the type of drawer to be used in the cabinet of the drawer cabinet. The drawer can have an inner drawer front or an outer drawer front as known in the art. The length of the side panel is different between the two types. However, by providing two types of brackets 1, 1' with actuator pins 23 in different positions, the actuator pin 23 will always be arranged in the same position relative to the locking device when supported by the drawer, and the locking device is configured to be installed in the drawer cabinet and the actuator pin 23 is intended to interact with the locking device. Whether a specific drawer has an inner drawer front or an outer drawer front, this is applicable. In addition, by providing two versions of brackets with flexible tongues in two different positions, the number of article numbers to be monitored can be significantly reduced. More precisely, there is no need to make any changes to the cabinet, the locking device in the cabinet or the side panel of the drawer according to the type of the drawer front, and only two different brackets with flexible tongues in two different positions and thus the actuator pins in two different positions need to be provided.

[0076] As in Figure 1C As best seen in FIG. 1 , a first main surface portion of the upper main surface of the bracket 1 extending on the support portion 4 forms an angle α of 0.5 to 2 degrees relative to a second main surface portion of the upper main surface of the bracket 1 extending on the locking portion 5. By means of the angle α, an inherent spring action is provided when the bracket 1 is mounted into the recess in the wall portion of the side panel, which spring action will help to hold the bracket 1 in place. It will be appreciated by those skilled in the art that the angle having a retaining function may be omitted.

[0077] The support 1 may be mirror-symmetrical as viewed relative to an imaginary plane extending along the first longitudinal extension L1 and the second longitudinal extension L2.

[0078] Now turn to FIG. 2A to FIG. 2D , the installation of the bracket 1 to the drawer 100 will be described. Figure 2A and Figure 2BAt first, the drawer 100 comprises a front panel 101, two opposite side panels 102A, 102B and a rear panel 103. In addition, the drawer 100 comprises a bottom wall 104. The rear panel 103 extends between an inner wall portion 106A of a first side panel 102A and an inner wall portion 106B of a second side panel 102B and has two opposite end edges 105A, 105B abutting against the inner wall portion 106A of the first side panel 102A and the inner wall portion 106B of the second side panel 102B. The two side panels 102A, 102B are identical, and thus only one side panel will be discussed below. In addition, the two end edges 105A, 105B of the rear panel 103 are identical.

[0079] The outer wall 107 of the side panel 102A includes a recess arrangement 108 formed in the rear end portion of the side panel 102A. Figure 2B As best seen in the figure, the recess arrangement structure 108 is configured to receive the support portion 4 and the locking portion 5 of the bracket 1. Therefore, the recess arrangement structure 108 has a geometry corresponding to the outer boundary portions 7A, 7B and 13 of the support portion 4 and the locking portion 5 of the bracket 1. Therefore, the recess arrangement structure 108 includes three circular recess portions 109A to 109C that partially merge with each other. The recess portion 109C configured to receive the locking portion 5 and thus the locking protrusion 12 of the bracket 1 is arranged in a position configured to overlap with the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103.

[0080] The recess arrangement 108 has a depth that is less than the material thickness of the side panel 102A. The depth is large enough to allow the circumferential flange 20 of the bracket 1 to go around the outer wall 107 of the side panel 102A. Furthermore, the recess portion 109C configured to receive the locking protrusion 12 of the bracket 1 is provided with a through opening 110 allowing the insertion of the fastening means 111.

[0081] As in Figure 2AAs best seen in FIG. 1 , the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103 is provided with two sets of openings. The first set of openings comprises two holes 112A, 112B extending into the rear panel 103 via the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103. The second set of openings comprises two holes 113A, 113B forming a non-through recess extending from the outer surface of the rear panel 103 and perpendicular to the main surface of the rear panel 103. The openings in the first set of holes 112A, 112B and the second set of holes 113A, 113B are aligned to form an upper pair of mating channels (not shown) meeting inside the material of the rear panel 103 and a lower pair of channels (not shown) meeting inside the material of the rear panel 103. The upper pair of openings 112A, 113A is arranged horizontally with the center of the locking protrusion 12 of the bracket 1 and therefore horizontally with the through opening 110 in the recess portion 109C. Thus, the fastening device 111 can be inserted.

[0082] The upper opening 112A of the first set of openings extending into the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103 preferably has a diameter corresponding to the outer diameter of the second portion 17 of the locking projection 12, thereby allowing the second portion 17 to be received therein when the bracket 1 is mounted to the side panel 102A.

[0083] Now turn to Figure 2B and Figure 2C As a first step in mounting the side panel 102A to the rear panel 103, the bracket 1 is inserted into a recess arrangement 108 formed in the outer wall 107 of the side panel 102A. This is achieved by moving the bracket 1 along the second longitudinal extension L2 into the recess arrangement 108 so that the support projections 6A, 6B and the locking projection 12 are received in the recess arrangement 108 while the circumferential flange 20 of the bracket 1 abuts the outer wall 107 of the side panel 102A. Furthermore, in this mounted position, the second portion 17 of the locking projection 12 is received in the hole 112A in the upper pair of openings extending into the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103.

[0084] A locking nut 114 is disposed in each of the second set of openings in the outer surface of the rear panel 103. Such locking nuts 114, which are well known in the art, are configured to allow the free end of the fastening device 111 to be inserted into engagement with an opening (not shown) in the locking nut 114.

[0085] As a next step, Figure 2CAs best seen in FIG. 1 , the fastening device 111 is inserted into each of the two openings 112A, 112B of the first set of openings in the rear panel 103. Thus, the upper fastening device 112A will be inserted through the through opening 110 in the bracket 1 into the upper opening 112A, into the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103, and further inserted into engagement with the locking nut 114.

[0086] As a final step, Figure 2D As best seen in FIG. 1 , the two locking nuts 114 are tightened by rotating them 90 degrees with a suitable tool (not shown). During this rotation of the locking nuts 114, the side panel 102A will be pulled into locking engagement with the end edge 105A of the rear panel 103. The process is then repeated for the opposite side panel 102B of the drawer 100.

[0087] With the upper major surface of the bracket 1 arranged at angle α, tensioning of the locking nut 114 will resiliently urge the bracket into a substantially flat configuration in which the outer boundaries 7A, 7B of the support portion 4 will frictionally engage corresponding inner boundaries of the recess arrangement 108 .

[0088] Now turn to FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C , describes the interaction between a bracket 1 and one embodiment of a device for preventing tipping. The device for preventing tipping comprises an anchor bracket 300 connected to an inner side wall 1001 of a drawer cabinet 1000 and a drawer locking device 200. Although the device for preventing tipping will be illustrated as being applied to a drawer cabinet, it should be understood that the device is equally applicable to other types of furniture with drawers where the center of gravity may change during use. Non-limiting examples are office furniture and filing cabinets.

[0089] The anchor bracket 300 includes a first bracket member 301 and a second bracket member 302 slidably received in the first bracket member 301. The first bracket member 301 includes a longitudinally extending body 303, which is configured to be fixedly mounted to the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000. The side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000 is preferably arranged to extend substantially perpendicularly to a structure 400 separated from the drawer cabinet 1000, such as a wall in a building or another piece of furniture, to which the drawer cabinet is to be anchored. The fixing of the first bracket member 301 to the side wall 1001 can be performed by screws or the like.

[0090] The first bracket member 301 includes a through opening 304 having a longitudinal extension extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal extension L of the first bracket member 301. The through opening 304 is configured to receive a protrusion 211 of a driver 210 to be discussed below.

[0091] The second bracket member 302 includes a guide portion 305 and a mounting portion 306. Preferably, the mounting portion 306 extends vertically from the guide portion of the second bracket member 305. The mounting portion 306 is pivotable relative to the guide portion 305. The second bracket member 302 is movable relative to the first bracket member 301 between a first position and a second position, in which the second bracket member 302 is adapted to be anchored to a structure 400 separate from the drawer cabinet 1000.

[0092] The second bracket member 302 includes a V-shaped guide groove 307 arranged to receive the protrusion 211 of the driver 210 to be discussed below. The guide groove 307 will form a cam mechanism together with the protrusion 211 of the driver 210 to be discussed below.

[0093] The V-shaped guide groove 307 comprises a first groove portion 307a having a longitudinal extension that coincides with the direction of movement of the second support member 302 relative to the first support element 301. In addition, the V-shaped guide groove 307 comprises a second groove portion 307b that forms an angle with the first groove portion 307a. The angle between the two groove portions has an influence on the force required to move the second support member to its second position. The greater the angle, the greater the force required.

[0094] Drawer locking device 200 is a well-known device in the furniture industry. Drawer locking device 200 is described in detail in, for example, US 4768 844, which is included by reference. The drawer locking device as described in the patent was initially developed to allow only one drawer to be opened at a time. In addition, the drawer locking device 200 was initially designed to be fixedly mounted to the side wall of the drawer cabinet. However, in the present invention, this is not the case. On the contrary, according to the present invention, the drawer locking device 200 is slidably mounted to the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000. In the disclosed embodiment, the drawer locking device 200 is received in the groove 1002 extending vertically formed in the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, as will be described below.

[0095] In the following, the general working principle of the drawer locking device 200 will be described. The drawer locking device 200 comprises a longitudinally extending guide rail 201 which can move relative to the inner side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000. This is achieved by the guide rail 201 being slidably received in a groove 1002 in the side wall 1001.

[0096] The guide rail 201 includes a stop member 202 arranged in an upper end portion of the guide rail 201. The stop member 202 includes a spring 203 that can be compressed relative to the stop member 202 by a predetermined distance that is limited to allow only one drawer to be opened at a time.

[0097] The guide rail 201 also supports one locking member 204 for each drawer 100 in the drawer cabinet 1000. In the disclosed embodiment, the drawer locking device 200 is configured for a drawer cabinet containing two drawers 100, and therefore the guide rail 201 supports two locking members 204. Each locking member 204 is pivotably supported by the drawer locking device 200.

[0098] Each locking member 204 comprises two fingers 205 defining a gap 206 therebetween which is configured to receive an actuator pin 23 supported by a bracket 1 forming part of the present invention and mounted to an outer side wall portion 107A of a respective drawer 100. In the closed position of the drawer 100, see Figure 4A , the actuator pin 23 will be received in said gap 206. The inherent flexibility of the tongue 22 allows the actuator pin 23 to enter the gap 206 when the drawer 100 is first inserted.

[0099] When the drawer 100 is pulled to open the drawer 100 , the actuator pin 23 will cause the locking member 204 to pivot, whereby the engagement between the actuator pin 23 and the finger 205 will be released, thereby allowing the drawer 100 to be pulled out.

[0100] The upper edge portion of the respective locking member 204 comprises a cam surface 207 which is configured to interact with a cam-shaped pusher 208. In the disclosed embodiment, the uppermost pusher 208 is arranged to interact with the spring 203 of the stop member 202, while the subsequent pushers 208 each interact indirectly with the spring 203 of the stop member 202 via a rod 209 slidably received in the guide track 201. Thus, when any of the locking members 204 below the uppermost locking member 204 is pivoted, one or more rods 209 of one or more locking members 204 above the pivoted locking member 204 will be pushed upwards, thereby acting on the spring 203 of the stop member 202 to compress the spring 203. Due to the cam mechanism between the respective pushers 208 and the cam surface 207, the total compressed length of the spring 203 of the stop member 202 will be the same regardless of which locking member 204 is pivoted. By the limited allowed compression of the spring 203 allowed by the stop member 202, only one drawer is allowed to be opened at a time.

[0101] The disclosed drawer locking device 200 according to the present invention is further different from the prior art drawer locking devices in that the disclosed drawer locking device 200 according to the present invention is provided with a driver 210 in the form of a protrusion 211. The driver 210 is fixedly arranged to the drawer locking device 200.

[0102] Since the drawer locking device 200 is slidably mounted to the inner side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, by lifting the actuator 210, the entire drawer locking device 200 will be displaced up and down along the groove 1002. Therefore, by displacing the drawer locking device 200 upward in the groove 1002 by lifting the actuator 210 by a distance exceeding the engagement length of the finger 205 of the corresponding locking member 204, the locking function of the drawer locking device 200 will be suspended. Therefore, the finger 205 will no longer engage any actuator pin 23 of any drawer 100. Thus, any number of drawers can be selectively opened simultaneously.

[0103] Now turn to FIG. 4A to FIG. 4C , the operation of the anti-tipping device will be explained. For ease of understanding, only the inner uppermost corner of the drawer cabinet 1000 and a portion of one drawer 100 are disclosed. The vertical side wall 102A of the drawer 100 is disclosed in cross section to better illustrate the cooperation between the drawer 100 and the locking member 204 of the drawer locking device 200. The side wall 102A of each drawer 100 includes a bracket 1 with an actuator pin 23, which protrudes away from the drawer 100 toward the locking member 204.

[0104] from Figure 4A Initially, the drawer 100 is set to the fully closed position. The anchor bracket 300 is fixedly mounted to the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, and the drawer locking device 200 is taken into account. In addition, the drawer cabinet 1000 is not anchored to the rear structure 400. The second bracket member 302 of the anchor bracket 300 is thus biased toward its first position, and the protrusion 211 of the driver 210 is in the first driver position, in which the protrusion 211 is received in the first slot portion 307a of the guide slot 307. Therefore, the ordinary operation of the drawer locking device is not affected, whereby the drawer locking device 200 has its ordinary intended function, allowing only one drawer 100 to be opened at a time. Therefore, the stop member 202 and its spring 203 are in a position in which the actuator pin 23 of the corresponding drawer 100 is received in the gap 206 formed between the two fingers 205 of the corresponding locking member 204.

[0105] Now turn to Figure 4B, the anchoring of the drawer cabinet 1000 to the structure 400 has been initiated. This is achieved by displacing the second bracket member 302 of the anchor bracket 300 towards the structure 400 - see arrow A. During this displacement, the protrusion 211 of the driver 210 will be pressed by the guide groove 307 of the anchor bracket 300 to lift the entire drawer locking device 200 along the longitudinal extension of the groove 1002 in the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, see arrow B. Therefore, this lifting will also cause the locking member 204 of the drawer locking device 200 to be displaced by the same distance, see arrow C, because it is part of the drawer locking device 200.

[0106] The second bracket member 302 will move in a direction transverse to the longitudinal extension of the guide rail 201 of the drawer locking device when it is set towards the second position thereby anchoring the drawer cabinet 1000. Therefore, although the drawer locking device preferably has a vertical longitudinal extension along the side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, the second bracket member 302 can be moved into a flat abutment relationship with the structure 400 to which it should be anchored.

[0107] Now turn to Figure 4C , the drawer cabinet 1000 is mounted to the structure 400 by means of the second bracket member 302 of the anchor bracket 300. This is achieved by the screw 308 engaging the structure 400 via the through hole 309 in the second bracket member 302. In this position, the second bracket member 302 has been displaced along the first bracket member 301 to such an extent that the protrusion 211 of the driver 210 has been displaced along the second slot portion 307b into the second driver position. In this second driver position, the anchor bracket 300 has displaced the entire drawer locking device 200 in the vertical direction to such an extent that the actuator pin 23 of the drawer 100 is no longer received in the gap 206 between the fingers of the locking member 204.

[0108] Since the anchor bracket 300 has caused the vertical displacement of the entire drawer locking device 200, the release engagement between the locking member and the actuator pin 23 is not only applicable to the disclosed drawer 100, but also to all drawers in the drawer cabinet. Therefore, two or more or all drawers can now be selectively opened. Therefore, the anchor bracket 300 is set to its following position: in this position, the functionality of the drawer locking device 200 is shelved, thereby allowing any drawer or any number of drawers to be selectively opened.

[0109] Thus, the actuator pin 23 is configured to be engaged by the locking device 200 before the anchor bracket 300 has been attached to the structure 400. When the drawer cabinet 1000 is not anchored to the structure 400, the actuator pin 23 is received in the gap 206 of the locking device 200. When the drawer cabinet 1000 is anchored to the structure 400, the actuator pin 23 is released from the gap 206 of the locking device 200. Thus, the actuator pin 23 of the bracket 1 is configured to be engaged by the drawer locking device 200 connected to the inner side wall 1001 of the drawer cabinet 1000, and the body of the bracket 1 is configured to be mounted to the outer wall portions 107A, 107B of the side panels 102A, 102B of the drawer 100.

[0110] Therefore, a device for preventing a chest of drawers from tipping over is provided, which sets a drawer locking device from an active mode to a passive mode when the chest of drawers is anchored to a wall or another structural member. When the drawer locking device is set to the active mode, only one drawer is allowed to be selectively opened at a time. When set to the passive mode, the user is allowed to selectively open any drawer and any number of drawers at the same time.

[0111] The device for preventing tipping has been illustrated as being applied to a chest of drawers. It will be appreciated that the device is equally applicable to other types of furniture having drawers where the centre of gravity may change during use. Non-limiting examples are office furniture and filing cabinets.
