[0020] All features described herein may be combined with any of the above aspects in any combination. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

[0022] It is to be understood that any amount or upper or lower range limits used herein may be independently combined.

[0023] Many chemicals that can be used to prepare the compositions of the present invention are obtained from natural sources. Such chemicals, due to their natural sources, generally include mixtures of chemical substances. Due to the presence of such mixtures, the various parameters defined herein may be average values and may be non-integer values.

[0024] It should be understood that when describing the number of carbon atoms in a substituent group (e.g., "C1 to C6"), this number refers to the total number of carbon atoms present in the substituent group, including any carbon atoms present in any branching groups. In addition, when describing the number of carbon atoms in, for example, a fatty acid, this refers to the total number of carbon atoms, including the carbon atoms at the carboxylic acid and any carbon atoms present in any branching groups.

[0025] The term "residue" as used herein is the portion of a reactant molecule that remains in a reaction product compound after a reaction has occurred.

[0026] The term "hydrolyzed protein" is used herein to refer to a protein that has been hydrolyzed. Hydrolyzed protein can include protein fragments, polypeptides, peptides, amino acids and / or peptones. Hydrolyzed protein can be produced by acid hydrolysis, alkaline hydrolysis and / or enzymatic hydrolysis of a protein (preferably a naturally occurring protein or a protein from a renewable source). Enzymatic hydrolysis is preferred. Without being bound by theory, when compared with acid hydrolysis or alkaline hydrolysis, the advantage of enzymatic hydrolysis is that enzymatic hydrolysis is more selective to the site on the hydrolyzed protein, so when compared with acid hydrolysis or alkaline hydrolysis, an improved amino compound for the preparation of the composition of the present invention is produced. Typically, acid hydrolysis can produce the smallest fragment by weight average molecular weight, alkaline hydrolysis can produce the largest fragment, and enzymatic hydrolysis can produce a medium-sized fragment between acid hydrolysis and alkaline hydrolysis. The size of the fragment in the hydrolyzed protein is directly proportional to the number of amino acid residues in the fragment, because the fragment is from the long amino acid chain that constitutes the unhydrolyzed protein. Acid hydrolysis may be disadvantageous due to the need for high temperature and / or high pressure. Alkaline hydrolysis can be disadvantageous due to the need to use harsh or hazardous chemicals.

[0027] The amino compound used to prepare the composition of the present invention may be a chemically unmodified hydrolyzed protein. The term "chemically unmodified hydrolyzed protein" refers to a protein that has not been further chemically modified (or reacted) besides being hydrolyzed.

[0028] The amino compound used to prepare the composition of the present invention may be a partially hydrolyzed protein. The term "partially hydrolyzed protein" refers to a protein that has not been completely hydrolyzed, ie, has not been hydrolyzed to the extent that only a single amino acid remains in the amino compound.

[0029] As used herein, the term "home care formulation" refers to consumer products for use by household and / or institutional consumers for cleaning, care or conditioning the home or its contents (e.g., fabrics). Home care formulations include, but are not limited to, detergents, including laundry detergents and dishwashing detergents; conditioners, including fabric conditioners; cleaning formulations, including hard surface cleaners; polishes and floor finishes.

[0112] The present invention is illustrated by the following non-limiting examples. Unless otherwise stated, all parts and percentages are given by weight. It should be understood that unless otherwise stated herein, or unless otherwise stated in the test methods and procedures referenced, all tests and physical properties listed are determined at atmospheric pressure and ambient temperature (i.e., about 23°C).

[0113] Test Method

[0114] The following test methods were used in this specification:

[0115] (i) Viscosity is measured at room temperature (25°C) with a Brookfield Ametek DV-1 viscometer using a suitable spindle (TC stick). The samples are tested at 10 rpm (0.17 Hz) for 1 minute immediately after sample preparation and 24 hours after sample preparation, and the results are expressed in cP (mPa.s).

[0116] (ii) Formaldehyde titration, a titration method for determining the degree of substitution of amino groups, described by Cobbett, WG, Gibbs, JA and Leach, AA (1964). J. Appl. Chem. (London), 14, 296-302.

[0117] (iii) pH was measured at room temperature (25°C) using a Fisher Scientific Accumet AE150 pH meter. Based on the initial pH reading, the pH of the formulation was adjusted to a range of 4.0-5.0 using 10 wt% sodium hydroxide solution (if the pH was lower) or 10 wt% citric acid solution (if the pH was higher). The pH was measured immediately after preparation of the formulation and 24 hours after preparation of the formulation.

[0118] (iv) The active substance content (in % by weight) in the sample is calculated by measuring the total non-volatile content and the ash content. The total non-volatile content measurement is performed on a sample of known weight by oven drying at 105°C for 17-19 hours to remove the moisture and any other volatile components present. After cooling in a desiccator, the residual weight is used to calculate the total non-volatile content (in % by weight) of the sample. For the ash content, a sample of known weight is carefully heated to a temperature of 575–600°C using increasing temperature steps in the presence of air and maintained at temperature for 16–18 hours (or longer if necessary). After cooling in a desiccator, the residual weight is used to calculate the ash content (in % by weight) of the sample. The active substance content (in % by weight) in the sample is then calculated by subtracting the weight % of ash from the weight % of the total non-volatile content.

[0119] (v) Weight average molecular weight was determined by size exclusion high performance liquid chromatography (SE-HPLC). The HPLC equipment and settings used are provided in Table 1.

[0120] Table 1: HPLC equipment and settings

[0121] (vi) Easy Ironing Test was conducted in a controlled environment room (50% relative humidity, temperature 22°C) using a tensile tester (Lloyd LRX) equipped with an ironing board attachment and a 10N load cell connected to a hot iron using the Running Limit Tension Method (250 mm at 800 mm / min). 100% cotton pieces (50 cm x 60 cm) were first prepared for testing by washing in a washing machine (Miele W1) cotton cycle at 60°C with a non-biological powder detergent (70 ml) and cotton ballast (2 kg), followed by drying in a tumble dryer (Indesit ID75) at high temperature for 1 hour. The cotton samples were then treated by washing in a washing machine cotton cycle at 40°C with a non-biological powder detergent (70 ml) and fabric conditioner (25 ml) and cotton ballast (2 kg), and allowed to air dry in the controlled environment room for at least 12 hours. The cotton sample is then placed on an ironing board while a hot iron is attached to the tensile tester on top. The tensile tester then pulls the iron through the sample and records the ultimate work (in joules). This process is repeated three times and the average ultimate work is recorded. The average percent change compared to the control is then calculated.

[0122] (vii) Shape retention testing was performed using a tensile testing machine (Lloyd LRX) equipped with a 500N load cell connected to a large sample clamp using the run-relaxation method (15 N at 800 mm / min, hold for 1 min before relaxation). The garments to be tested were treated by washing in a washing machine (Miele W1) at 40°C with non-biological powder detergent (70 ml) and fabric conditioner (25 ml) and cotton ballast (2 kg), followed by drying in a tumble dryer (Indesit ID75) at high temperature for 1 hour. The wash-dry cycle was repeated 9 more times. Samples of the garments were prepared by cutting the fabric into strips (16 cm x 3 cm) and marking the test area (10 cm long, 5 cm on each side of the center), then the test piece was clamped into the tensile testing machine and the sample was stretched according to the relaxation method. After the run was completed, the test area was remeasured and the difference in the length and width of the test area was calculated. The measurement was repeated on three samples and the average percentage difference from the control was calculated.

[0123] (viii) Colour protection testing was carried out using an X-rite colour i5 spectrophotometer operating with UV exclusion and a D65 light source with a 25 mm aperture. The garments to be tested were treated by washing in a washing machine (Miele W1) at 40°C with non-bio powder detergent (70 ml) and fabric conditioner (25 ml) and a cotton ballast (2 kg), followed by drying in a tumble dryer (Indesit ID75) at high temperature for 1 hour. The wash drying cycle was repeated a further 9 times. Colour measurements were taken from several areas of the garment and the average change in colour lightness (DL) compared to the colour of the unwashed garment was determined. The percentage improvement in colour protection over the control was calculated.

[0124] (ix) The print protection test was conducted using a panel of untrained personnel who were asked to rank a series of blind coded printed T-shirts in order of print quality. The garments to be tested were treated by washing in a washing machine (Miele W1) at 40°C with non-bio powder detergent (70 ml) and fabric conditioner (25 ml) and cotton ballast (2 kg), followed by drying in a tumble dryer (Indesit ID75) at high temperature for 1 hour. The wash drying cycle was repeated 3 more times. The panelists rated the prints on a scale of 1 to 3, with 1 representing the best quality print and 3 representing the worst quality print. Example 1

[0125] The amino compound used to prepare the composition of the present invention can be prepared by any of the following methods A to E.

[0126] Method A

[0127] Potato protein concentrate is added to hydrochloric acid solution and mixed until fully dispersed. The resulting dispersion is heated to reflux conditions. The dispersion is heated until the weight average molecular weight of the protein (measured by SE-HPLC as described in the test method) stops decreasing, typically in the range of 200-500 Da. After hydrolysis is complete, the pH of the solution is increased by adding sodium hydroxide. The protein hydrolysate is purified by filtering and treating with activated carbon. After purification, more sodium hydroxide is added to make the solution alkaline, and the solution is concentrated to the desired active substance content (within the range of 20 to 30% by weight active substance content) by evaporation or ultrafiltration, wherein ultrafiltration has the benefit of desalination. The resulting product will be referred to as amino compound A.

[0128] Method B

[0129] Potato protein concentrate is added to hydrochloric acid solution and mixed until fully dispersed. The resulting dispersion is heated to reflux conditions. The dispersion is heated until the weight average molecular weight of the protein stops decreasing, typically in the range of 200-500 Da. The acidic protein hydrolysate is then recovered by filtration. The pH of the solution is then increased by passing the solution through an anion exchange resin to remove chloride ions. The protein hydrolysate is purified by treating with activated carbon. After purification, more sodium hydroxide is added to make the solution alkaline, and the solution is concentrated to the desired active substance content (within the range of 20 to 30% by weight active substance content). The resulting product will be referred to as amide B.

[0130] Method C

[0131] Potato protein concentrate is added to the water and mixed until fully dispersed. The resulting dispersion is heated to the desired temperature, then sodium hydroxide solution is used to regulate pH. By stirring under the desired temperature and pH range, enzyme (carbohydrase and protease) catalysis of the hydrolysis of potato protein is used to achieve the usual weight average molecular weight of about 400 to 700 Da. After the hydrolysis, the pH of the hydrolysis mixture is reduced to acidity by adding hydrochloric acid solution, and the enzyme is denatured by heating. Purify the protein hydrolysate by filtering and treating with activated carbon. Then sodium hydroxide is used to adjust the hydrolyzed protein solution of the gained dilution to alkaline pH, and then concentrated into the desired active substance content (within the range of 20 to 30% by weight active substance content). Products therefrom will be referred to as amide C.

[0132] Method D

[0133] Potato protein concentrate is added to the water and mixed until fully dispersed. The gained dispersion is heated to the desired temperature, then sodium hydroxide solution is used to regulate pH. By stirring under the desired temperature and pH range, enzyme (carbohydrase and protease) catalysis of the hydrolysis of potato protein is used to realize the common weight average molecular weight of about 700 to 950 Da. After the hydrolysis, the pH of the hydrolysis mixture is reduced to acidity by adding hydrochloric acid solution, and the enzyme is denatured by heating. Purify the protein hydrolysate by filtering and treating with activated carbon. Then sodium hydroxide is used that the hydrolyzed protein solution of the gained dilution is adjusted to alkaline pH, and then concentrated into the desired active substance content (within 20 to 30% by weight active substance content range). Products therefrom will be referred to as amide D.

[0134] Method E

[0135] Chickpea protein concentrate is added to water and mixed until fully dispersed. The resulting dispersion is heated to the desired temperature, then sodium hydroxide solution is used to adjust pH. By stirring under the desired temperature and pH range, the hydrolysis of chickpea protein is catalyzed using enzymes (carbohydrase and protease) to achieve the usual weight average molecular weight of about 800 to 1000 Da. After hydrolysis, the pH of the hydrolysis mixture is reduced to acidity by adding hydrochloric acid solution, and the enzyme is denatured by heating. Purify the protein hydrolysate by filtering and treating with activated carbon. Then sodium hydroxide is used to adjust the resulting diluted hydrolyzed protein solution to alkaline pH, and then concentrated into the desired active substance content (within the range of 20 to 30% by weight active substance content). The resulting product will be referred to as amino compound E. Example 2

[0136] In a suitable container, the composition of the present invention is prepared by reacting amino compound D or amino compound E with itaconic anhydride according to the following method:

[0137] 1. Place the amino compound into a container.

[0138] 2. Adjust the pH to 9.5-11.0 (preferably 10.0-10.5) with sodium hydroxide. A high pH is preferred to promote the reaction of itaconic anhydride with the amino compound rather than with water to avoid or reduce the production of itaconic acid.

[0139] 3. Add a calculated amount of itaconic anhydride (calculated by formaldehyde titration, a technique described by Cobbett, WG, Gibbs, JA and Leach, AA (1964). J. Appl. Chem. (London), 14, 296-302). In this specific example, the amount of itaconic anhydride added is calculated by formaldehyde titration to react with 25 mole % of the free amino groups of the amino compound within a 15-120 minute period (preferably a 30-60 minute period). This calculation is based on the reaction proceeding to completion, but some itaconic anhydride may react with water to form itaconic acid and prevent complete reaction of the itaconic anhydride with the amino compound. An example of the calculated amount of itaconic anhydride required in grams is, for example, 200 (exemplary weight of the amino compound in grams) x 26.55 (exemplary result of formaldehyde titration) x 0.02 (molar concentration of NaOH used in formaldehyde titration) x 112 (molecular weight of itaconic anhydride) x 0.25 (mol % of free amino groups required for the reaction) / 1000 (unit conversion).

[0140] 4. During the addition of itaconic anhydride and initiation of the reaction, maintain a temperature of 15-45°C, preferably 20-35°C, and a pH of 9.5-11.0, preferably 10.0-10.5.

[0141] 5. The reaction conditions are maintained for another 1-4 hours (preferably 1-2 hours).

[0142] 6. Acidify with a mineral acid such as hydrochloric acid to pH 3.5-5.5 (preferably 4.0-5.0).

[0143] 7. Preserved by adding preservatives.

[0144] 8. Cool and adjust pH to pH 3.5-5.5 (preferably 4.0-5.0).

[0145] 9. Filter.

[0146] The obtained product will be referred to as itaconic acid-modified amino compound D or itaconic acid-modified amino compound E. Example 3

[0157] Table 3: Easy ironing test results

[0158] * Negative results indicate a decrease in performance

[0159] Table 3 shows that when itaconic acid modified amino compounds D or E are added to fabric conditioners, the easy ironing performance is improved compared to the fabric conditioner control without additives (Formulations 3 and 5). However, when amino compounds D or E are used in fabric conditioners without itaconic acid modification, a decrease in easy ironing performance is shown (Formulations 2 and 4). Example 5

[0162] * Negative results indicate a decrease in performance

[0163] Table 4 shows that when itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed potato protein (Formulation 3) or itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed chickpea protein (Formulation 5) is added to a fabric conditioner, shape retention performance is improved compared to a fabric conditioner control without additives (Formulation 1) or when hydrolyzed protein alone is used (Formulations 2 and 4). Example 6

[0164] Formulations 1, 3 and 5 from Table 2 of Example 3 were tested for color protection performance using the Color Protection Test Method described above. The results are provided in Table 5 where the garment tested was a blue cotton T-shirt, and in Table 6 where the garment tested was blue jeans.

[0165] Table 5: Color protection test results – cotton T-shirt

[0166] Table 6: Color Protection Test Results – Blue Jeans

[0167] Tables 5 and 6 show that color care performance is improved when itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed potato protein (Formulation 3) or itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed chickpea protein (Formulation 5) is added to a fabric conditioner compared to a fabric conditioner control without additives. Example 7

[0168] Formulations 1, 3 and 5 from Table 2 of Example 3 were tested for print protection performance using the print protection test method described above. Panelists rated the prints from 1 to 3, with 1 representing the best quality print and 3 representing the worst quality print. The results are provided in Table 7.

[0169] Table 7: Printing protection test results

[0170] Table 7 shows the ratings given by the panelists when comparing the print quality of the addition of itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed potato protein (Formulation 3) or itaconic acid modified hydrolyzed chickpea protein (Formulation 5) to the fabric conditioner control (Formulation 1) alone. Of the 14 panelists, 6 selected Formulation 3 as providing the best quality print, and 8 selected Formulation 5 as providing the best quality print. All panelists selected the print washed with the fabric conditioner alone (Control) as the worst quality print. Example 8

[0171] Formulations of 99 wt% fabric conditioner and 1 wt% hydrolyzed potato or chickpea protein with varying levels of itaconic acid modification were tested for shape retention versus a fabric conditioner control using the shape retention method described above. The results are provided in Table 8. The formulations in Table 8 were prepared according to the method of Example 2, with step 3 modified to use the required amount of itaconic anhydride to provide the desired mole % of itaconic acid modification.

[0172] Table 8: Different levels of itaconic acid modification * Shape retention results

[0173] * Itaconic acid modification levels were calculated using formaldehyde titration, assuming complete reaction

[0174] As can be seen in Table 8, for both hydrolyzed potato and chickpea proteins, itaconic acid modification at the 25 mol % level appears to produce better shape retention results.

[0175] It will be appreciated that the invention is not limited to the details of the above embodiments, which have been described by way of example only. Many variations are possible.
