Abstract
Description
[0001] CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS
[0002] This application claims priority to U.S. Provisional Application No. 63 / 354,548, filed on June 22, 2022, and European Application No. 22187945.5, filed on July 29, 2022. The entire contents of these applications are expressly incorporated herein by this reference. Technical Field
[0003] The present disclosure relates to methods of enhancing mental performance and compositions suitable for use in such methods, typically compositions containing fragrances. The present disclosure also relates to consumer products suitable for use in methods of enhancing mental performance, typically perfumed consumer products. Background Art
[0004] The emotions, affective states, and other consumer benefits evoked by fragrance and aroma are important drivers of consumer satisfaction. “Smell” or “taste” generally refers to the perceived sensation caused by stimulation of the olfactory organ by one or more volatile chemicals (odorants). Due to evolution, the olfactory system can preferentially access the emotional center of the brain, providing odors with the ability to influence human behavior, mood, and decision-making. It has long been known that there is a close connection between smell and emotion (Engen, 1976). In fact, pleasant and unpleasant odors can cause different responses at the behavioral (Bensafi, Rouby, Farget, Vigouroux, & Holley, 2002) and physiological (Bensafi, Rouby, Farget, Bertrand et al., 2002b; Delplanque et al., 2009) levels.
[0005] However, the ability to target specific consumer benefits (e.g., enhanced cognitive function) and select a fragrance or fragrance blend to achieve that benefit is challenging. While it is well known that scents can influence human behavior, mood, and decision making, the link between scents and specific consumer benefits elicited by such scents is unclear.
[0006] Thus, there continues to be a need for methods or approaches that can target certain consumer benefits, such as enhancing cognitive function, particularly mental performance, including compositions (typically fragrance-containing compositions) for eliciting such benefits. [0046] In a first aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a method for enhancing a subject's mental performance, the method comprising:
[0047] a) providing a composition for enhancing mental performance or a consumer product comprising the composition for enhancing mental performance,
[0048] b) exposing a subject (typically a human) to the mental performance enhancing composition or the consumable in an amount effective to enhance the mental performance of the subject;
[0049] wherein the composition for enhancing mental performance comprises one or more musk components, one or more powdery components, one or more floral components, or any combination thereof,
[0050] Wherein, when musk component is present, its total amount is at least 1%, typically at least 2%, more typically at least 4%;
[0051] When powdery ingredients are present, the total amount thereof is at least 0.5%, typically at least 0.6%, more typically at least 0.8%; and
[0052] When floral components are present, the total amount thereof is at least 10%, typically at least 15%, more typically at least 19%;
[0053] The total amount of musk components, powdery components and floral components is at least 20%, typically at least 25%, more typically at least 30%, these amounts are expressed by weight relative to the total weight of the composition; wherein the musk components, powdery components and floral components are as described herein.
[0054] It has been found that a composition for enhancing mental performance comprising one or more musk ingredients, one or more powdery ingredients, one or more floral ingredients, or any combination thereof can enhance mental performance in a subject, typically a human. The composition for enhancing mental performance described herein can be a fragrance composition, as one or more musk ingredients, one or more powdery ingredients, one or more floral ingredients, or any combination thereof are ingredients suitable for use in fragrance compositions.
[0055] A subject, typically a human, may be exposed to the mental performance enhancing composition or the consumable in an amount effective to enhance the subject's mental performance using any method known to those skilled in the art capable of delivering an odor to the subject's nose.
[0056] The methods described herein for enhancing the mental performance of a subject are non-therapeutic methods and do not involve the treatment of any disease or the cure of any illness or ailment. The methods described herein provide a positive consumer benefit in the form of enhanced mental performance.
[0057] In some embodiments, the enhancement of mental performance can be an increase in mental processing speed or efficiency, or a decrease in reaction time when performing cognitive tasks (e.g., Stroop task, mental arithmetic task, etc.). The Stroop task is a classic paradigm for measuring interference and attention (see, e.g., Stroop, JR (1935). Studies of interference in serial verbal reactions. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 18, 643-662 and MacLeod, CM (1991) Half a Century of Research on the Stroop Effect: An Integrative Review. Psychological Bulletin, 109 (2), 163-203). Mental arithmetic tasks require quantitative reasoning, working memory, and decision-making in an ecologically valid environment (see, e.g., Wechsler, D. (2014). Wechsler intelligence scale for children-fifth edition. Bloomington, MN: Pearson and Wechsler, D. (2008). Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV) [Database record]. APA Psyc Tests.).
[0058] In some embodiments, a subject's reaction time on a task (typically a Stroop task and / or a mental arithmetic task) is reduced during or after exposure to a mental performance enhancing composition or a consumable comprising the mental performance enhancing composition.
[0059] In some embodiments, a subject's accuracy in performing a task (typically a Stroop task and / or a mental arithmetic task) is improved during or after exposure to a mental performance enhancing composition or a consumable comprising the mental performance enhancing composition.
[0060] In some embodiments, a subject's subjective sense of focus or concentration as measured by a questionnaire increases while performing a task (typically a Stroop task and / or a mental arithmetic task) during or after exposure to a mental performance enhancing composition or a consumable comprising the mental performance enhancing composition.
[0061] In some embodiments, the enhancement in mental performance may last for at least 2 hours.

[0713] The mental performance enhancing compositions described herein may also contain additional ingredients commonly used in the fragrance industry, such as fragrance carriers.
[0714] As used herein, "fragrance carrier" refers to a material that is virtually neutral from a fragrance point of view, i.e., does not significantly change the sensory properties of the fragrance ingredients. The carrier can be liquid or solid. Exemplary liquid carriers include, but are not limited to, emulsifying systems, i.e., solvents and surfactant systems, or solvents commonly used in the fragrance industry. A detailed description of the properties and types of solvents commonly used in the fragrance industry is not exhaustive. However, suitable solvents include, but are not limited to, glycols, such as propylene glycol or butylene glycol; glycerol; dipropylene glycol and its monoethers, 1,2,3-propanetriol triacetate, dimethyl glutarate, dimethyl adipate, 1,3-diacetoxyprop-2-yl acetate, diethyl phthalate, isopropyl myristate, rosin resins (e.g., available from Eastman ), benzyl benzoate, benzyl alcohol, 2-(2-ethoxyethoxy)-1-ethanol, triethyl citrate, and mixtures thereof; and naturally derived solvents such as glycerol and vegetable oils, including palm oil, sunflower oil, linseed oil, and mixtures thereof. In some cases, for example, the fragrance carrier may be ethanol, a water / ethanol mixture, limonene or other terpenes, isoparaffins, such as those sold under the trademark Those known in the art (available from Exxon Chemical), or glycol ethers and glycol ether esters, such as those sold under the trademark Those known as castor oils (available from Dow Chemical Company), or hydrogenated castor oils, such as those sold under the trademark RH 40 is known among those (available from BASF).
[0715] Solid carrier refers to a kind of material that strengthens the composition of psychological performance or some composition of strengthening psychological performance can be chemically or physically combined with it.Generally speaking, this type of solid carrier is used for stabilizing composition, or controls the evaporation rate of composition or some composition.Solid carrier is what is used in this area at present, and those skilled in the art know how to reach the desired effect.Suitable solid carrier includes but is not limited to absorbent glue or polymer or inorganic material, for example porous polymer, cyclodextrin, dextrin, maltodextrin, wood-based material, organic or inorganic gel, clay, gypsum, talcum or zeolite.
[0716] Other suitable solid carriers include encapsulating materials. Examples of such materials may include wall-forming materials and plasticizers, such as glucose syrup, natural or modified starch, hydrocolloids, cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl acetate, polyvinyl alcohol, proteins or pectins, plant gums such as acacia gum (gum arabic), urea, sodium chloride, sodium sulfate, zeolite, sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, clay, talc, calcium carbonate, magnesium sulfate, gypsum, calcium sulfate, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, calcium chloride, potassium chloride, magnesium chloride, zinc chloride, carbohydrates, sugars such as sucrose, monosaccharides, disaccharides, trisaccharides and polysaccharides and derivatives such as chitosan, starch, cellulose, carboxymethyl methylcellulose, methyl Cellulose, hydroxyethylcellulose, ethylcellulose, propylcellulose, polyols / sugar alcohols such as sorbitol, maltitol, xylitol, erythritol and isomalt, polyethylene glycol (PEG), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), polyvinyl alcohol, acrylamide, acrylates, polyacrylic acid and related substances, maleic anhydride copolymers, amine functional polymers, vinyl ethers, styrene, polystyrene sulfonates, vinyl acid, ethylene glycol-propylene glycol block copolymers, vegetable gums, acacia gum, pectin, xanthan gum, alginates, carrageenan, citric acid or any water-soluble solid acid, fatty alcohol or fatty acid and mixtures thereof.
[0717] Other suitable encapsulating materials are described in references known to the person skilled in the art, for example H. Scherz, Hydrokolloide: Stabilisatoren, Dickungs- und Geliermittel in Lebensmitteln, Band2 der Schriftenreihe Lebensmittelchemie, Behr's Verlag GmbH & Co., Hamburg, 1996. Encapsulation is a process well known to the person skilled in the art and may be performed, for example, using techniques such as spray drying, agglomeration or extrusion; or consist of coating encapsulation including coacervation and complex coacervation techniques.
[0718] Other exemplary solid supports include core-shell capsules having aminoplast, polyamide, polyester, polyurea or polyurethane type resins and mixtures thereof, which are prepared using techniques well known to those skilled in the art, such as by polymerization-induced phase separation, interfacial polymerization, coacervation or a combination thereof, optionally in the presence of a polymer stabilizer or a cationic copolymer.
[0719] The resins may be produced by polycondensation of aldehydes such as formaldehyde, 2,2-dimethoxyacetaldehyde, glyoxal, glyoxylic acid or glycolaldehyde and mixtures thereof with amines such as urea, benzoguanamine, glycoluril, melamine, methylolmelamine, methylated methylolmelamine, guanazole, and the like and mixtures thereof. Alternatively, preformed resins may be used, such as those sold under the trademark (Source: Cytec Technology Corp.), (Source: Cytec TechnologyCorp.), or (Source: BASF) Those that are commercially available.
[0720] Other suitable resins are prepared by reacting a polyol such as glycerol with a polyisocyanate such as a trimer of hexamethylene diisocyanate, a trimer of isophorone diisocyanate or xylylene diisocyanate or the biuret of hexamethylene diisocyanate, or a trimer of xylylene diisocyanate and trimethylolpropane (known under the trade name Those produced by polycondensation of xylylene diisocyanate (source: Mitsui Chemicals), of which the trimer of xylylene diisocyanate with trimethylolpropane and the biuret of hexamethylene diisocyanate are preferred.
[0721] Encapsulation of fragrances by condensation of amino resins, i.e., melamine-based resins, with aldehydes is well known in the art. No. 4,396,670 issued on August 2, 1983. General knowledge of encapsulation technology is very important and cannot be exhaustive. More recent targeted publications also relate to suitable uses of such microcapsules, representative articles such as K. Bruyninckx and M. Dusselier, ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering, 2019, vol. 7, pages 8041-8054. These publications are incorporated herein by reference.

[0752] In a third aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a consumer product comprising the mental performance enhancing composition described herein.
[0753] The form of the consumer product is not particularly limited. In some forms, the consumer product is typically a scented consumer product. In one embodiment, the consumer product is a perfume, a fabric care product, a body care product, a cosmetic preparation, a skin care product, an air care product or a home care product.
[0754] In another embodiment, the consumer product is a fine perfume, a splash, an eau de parfum, or a perfum), cologne, shaving lotion or aftershave, liquid or solid or single-dose detergent, fabric softener, solid or liquid fabric fragrance enhancer, fabric refresher, ironing water, paper, bleach, carpet cleaner, curtain care products, shampoo, leave-in or rinse-out hair conditioner (conditioner), dye preparations, dye care products, hair styling products, dental care products, disinfectants, intimate care products, hair spray (hair spray), vanishing cream, body deodorant (deodorant) or antiperspirant, hair remover, tanning product or sunscreen product, nail care product, skin cleanser, makeup, soap, shower or bath mousse, bath oil or shower gel, or foot / hand care product, hygiene products, air freshener, "ready-to-use" powder air freshener, mildew remover, furniture care products, wipes, dishwashing detergent or hard surface cleaner, leather care product, or car care product.
[0755] The amount of the composition that enhances mental performance in the consumable is not particularly limited. One of ordinary skill in the art is able to adjust the amount of the composition that enhances mental performance in the consumable to provide an effective amount of the composition that enhances mental performance to the subject or consumer, as long as the composition is perceptible to the subject or consumer. One of ordinary skill will understand that the amount of the composition that is perceptible to the subject or consumer depends on the consumable.
[0756] However, in some embodiments, the consumer product comprises 0.1% to 85% by weight of a composition that enhances mental performance relative to the total weight of the consumer product. In some embodiments, the consumer product comprises 0.1% to 15%, typically 0.1% to 7%, more typically 0.1% to 5% by weight of a composition that enhances mental performance relative to the total weight of the consumer product. "Smell" or "flavor" generally refers to the perceived sensation caused by stimulation of the olfactory organ by one or more volatile chemicals (odorants). Due to evolution, the olfactory system can preferentially access the emotional centers of the brain, providing scents with the ability to influence human behavior, mood, and decision-making.
[0760] In a fourth aspect, the present disclosure is directed to a method for evaluating the ability of a material to provide a consumer benefit over time, the method comprising performing one or more steps, wherein each step comprises:
[0761] a.) exposing the subject to an odorous material,
[0762] b.) capture the subject’s perception of odor intensity,
[0763] c.) optionally, allowing the subject to perform one or more tasks and measuring parameters associated with each task,
[0764] d.) Capture the subject’s mood or mental state,
[0765] e.) Repeat steps a. to d. 1 to 10 times, typically 1 to 5 times.

[0770] In one embodiment, each session lasts at least 30 minutes, typically at least 1 hour, more typically at least 2 hours.
[0771] In one embodiment, the task is a Stroop task or an arithmetic task.
[0772] In one embodiment, the parameter associated with each task is reaction time or accuracy.
[0773] Reference is made to using the compositions or consumables described herein to enhance mental performance in a subject (typically a human). According to the present disclosure, using the compositions or consumables to enhance mental performance in a subject is not therapeutic and is not intended to treat any disease or condition.
[0774] The compositions, products, uses and methods according to the present disclosure are further illustrated by the following non-limiting examples.
[0775] Example 1. Enhancement of Mental Performance
[0776] Two mental performance enhancing compositions, one an inventive composition ("Fragrance A") and the other a comparative composition ("Fragrance B"), were evaluated for their ability to enhance mental performance. The mental performance enhancing compositions evaluated are summarized in Table 1 below.
[0777] Table 1.
[0778]
[0779] Mental performance in two different cognitive tasks was measured. One task was the Stroop task (see Stroop, JR (1935). Studies of interference in serial verbal reactions. Journal of Experimental Psychology, 18, 643-662 and MacLeod, CM (1991). Half a Century of Research on the Stroop Effect: An Integrative Review. Psychological Bulletin, 109 (2), 163-203), which is a classic example for measuring interference and attention, and the other task was a mental arithmetic task, which is used to measure quantitative reasoning in an ecologically valid environment.
[0780] Participants: Twenty-four female nonsmokers (18-35 years) participated in the study after giving informed consent; they were compensated for their participation.
[0781] Tasks: Participants performed two mental performance tasks, and the following instructions were provided at the beginning of the experiment: "Today we will ask you to perform some mental performance tasks. Please note that some fragrance may be emitted during the practice."
[0782] (1) In the Stroop task, participants were asked to press one of three keys on a keyboard to represent the color (red, green, blue) of a color word displayed on a screen. The buttons on the keyboard were painted red, green, and blue to facilitate identification. The color words and the colors they were displayed in could either match (congruent) or not match (incongruent). The task lasted 3 minutes, and participants completed an average of 155.3 trials (SD = 13.5). 0.6% of the trials were excluded from the analysis because the responses were not recorded correctly.
[0783] (2) In the mental arithmetic task, participants performed a series of arithmetic operations with two different difficulty levels: simple (addition of 1- and 2-digit numbers) and difficult (addition of 2- and 3-digit numbers). The simple task was always performed first. The task lasted 4 min, and participants completed an average of 24.5 trials (SD = 3.3) in the simple task and 14.5 trials (SD = 3.0) in the difficult task. Reaction time (RT) and accuracy were measured during the performance of the task. 0.04% of the trials were discarded from the analysis because the response was not recorded correctly.
[0784] Scent conditions: The task was performed under three odor conditions: (a) with the invented "Fragrance A", (b) with the comparative "Fragrance B" (Fragrance Control), and (c) without odor (Control condition). Both fragrances were diluted in dipropylene glycol (DIPG) to a concentration of 40% and 60%. The odors were diffused with a scent diffuser (UMA REF. 15207790, from Nature & Decouvertes) in separate small chambers (140 cm × 140 cm × 197 cm), and participants moved between the three small chambers. The order of odor presentation was counterbalanced across participants.
[0785] Final Questionnaire: At the end of the experiment, participants answered a set of questions to assess whether they could perceive the aroma, as well as the intensity and pleasantness of the aroma. Here, the aroma was presented through an olfactory strip to assess the degree of related emotions when smelling using a known scale (see Porcherot, et al., Food Quality and Preference, Volume 21, Issue 8, December 2010, Pages 938-947). For this purpose, the nine emotional dimensions were scored using a 101-point visual analog scale (VAS), with "no feeling" (0) and "feeling very strongly" (100) as the benchmark.
[0786] Statistical analysis: As indicators of task performance in both cognitive tasks, RT (reaction time) and response accuracy were analyzed. The effects of task consistency (consistent, inconsistent) or difficulty (easy, difficult) on these indicators were assessed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test, while the effects of odor conditions (“fragrance A”, “fragrance B”, control) were investigated using the Friedman test, followed by the Wilcoxon signed-rank test as post hoc test if applicable. Comparisons of the sensations evoked by the fragrances (from the final questionnaire) were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with “fragrance” as a within-subject factor. Post hoc tests were performed using Duncan’s multiple range test. For all statistical analyses, the alpha level was a priori set to 0.05.
[0787] result
[0788] Stroop task: Figure 1 As shown in A, the accuracy rate of the consistent trials was higher than that of the inconsistent trials [V = 250, Z = 2.95, p = .003, r = 0.60]. The odor condition did not affect the accuracy rate
[0789] Repeating the Stroop effect, participants responded faster in congruent trials than in incongruent trials [ V = 0, Z = 5.29, p < .001, r = 1.08; Figure 1 B]. Figure 1 C and Figure 1 D shows that compared with the control [V = 36, Z = 3.45, p < .001, r = 0.70] and “fragrance B” [V = 45, Z = 3.12, p = .002, r = 0.64], in the odor condition There was a significant difference in reaction time RT, with faster responses, indicating faster mental processing in the presence of “Fragrance A”. In contrast, there was no significant difference in the presence of “Fragrance B” compared to the control [V=136, Z=0.38, p=.705, r=0.08]. Incorrect trials, irrational responses (i.e., RT<300ms and RT>1500ms), and responses that deviated more than 2.5 standard deviations from the participant mean were removed from the analysis, resulting in the removal of 5.0% of the trials.
[0790] Arithmetic task: As expected, the accuracy of the easy task was higher than that of the difficult task [V = 250, Z = 3.99, p < .001, r = 0.82] (e.g. Figure 2 A). The accuracy is not affected by the odor condition.
[0791]
[0792] As expected, Figure 2 As shown in B, participants responded faster in the easy task than in the difficult task [V = 0, Z = 5.17, p < .001, r = 1.05]. Figure 2 C and Figure 2 D shows that different odor conditions Specifically, the RTs for “Fragrance A” were significantly shorter than those for the control [V=70, Z=2.07, p=.038, r=0.42] and slightly shorter than those for “Fragrance B” [V=82, Z=1.69, p=.092, r=0.34]. In contrast, there were no significant differences when “Fragrance B” was present compared to the control [V=114, Z=0.70, p=.482, r=0.14]. No odor effect was observed in the simple task Error trials, implausible responses (i.e., RT < 1500 ms and RT > 12000 ms), and responses that deviated 2.5 SDs from the participant mean were removed from the analysis, resulting in the removal of 5.8% of trials. One participant was excluded from the analysis due to insufficient number of trials (i.e., more than 50% of trials were removed after RT preprocessing).
[0793] Final questionnaire: Participants reported that they smelled the fragrance in both odor conditions and found the experience pleasant. In the control condition, they did not smell any fragrance.
[0794] Overall, the results showed significant reductions in reaction times in the Stroop and complex arithmetic tasks, indicating an increase in mental processing speed while maintaining accuracy. Notably, this effect was only observed in the presence of "Fragrance A" and not in "Fragrance B." In summary, the data demonstrate that fragrances designed specifically in accordance with the present disclosure can enhance mental performance and that this effect can be captured by both implicit and objective measures.

[0800] Example 3. Enhancement of Mental Performance
[0801] Four inventive compositions ("Fragrance G", "Fragrance H", "Fragrance I" and "Fragrance J") were evaluated for their potential to enhance mental performance. Their characteristics are shown in Tables 4 and 5.
[0802] Table 4.
[0803]
[0804] Table 5.
[0805]
[0806] The method and procedure were the same as those used in Example 1, except that five odor conditions were used.
[0807] Participants: Sixty female nonsmokers (18-40 years) participated in the study after giving informed consent; they were compensated for their participation.
[0808] Task: Participants performed the mental performance tasks following the following instructions provided at the beginning of the experiment: "Today we will ask you to perform some mental performance tasks. Please note that some aroma may be emitted during the practice." The Stroop task lasted 3 minutes, during which participants completed an average of 151.9 trials (SD = 13.2). 0.6% of the trials were removed from the analysis because the responses were not correctly recorded. The mental arithmetic task lasted 4 minutes, during which participants completed an average of 26.3 trials (SD = 2.3) in the easy task and 15.5 trials (SD = 3.2) in the difficult task. 0.1% of the trials were removed from the analysis because the responses were not correctly recorded.
[0809] Scent conditions: The different tasks were performed under five odor conditions: (a) using "Fragrance G" of the present invention, (b) using "Fragrance H" of the present invention, (c) using "Fragrance I" of the present invention, (d) using "Fragrance J" of the present invention, and (e) no odor (control condition). The fragrances were diluted in DIPG to concentrations of 30%, 40%, 70%, and 85%. Similar to Example 1, the odors were diffused in separate small cabins (140 cm×140 cm×197 cm) using a fragrance diffuser (UMA REF.15207790, from Nature & Decouvertes), and the participants moved between the five cabins. The order of odor presentation was counterbalanced between participants.
[0810] Statistical analysis: Consistent with the method used in Example 1, RT (reaction time) and response accuracy were analyzed separately. The effect of task consistency (consistent, inconsistent) or difficulty (easy, difficult) on these indicators was assessed using the Wilcoxon signed rank test. Similarly, each fragrance was compared with the control condition, and the effect of the fragrance ("Fragrance G", "Fragrance H", "Fragrance I", "Fragrance J") was studied using the Wilcoxon signed rank test.
[0811] result
[0812] We replicated most of the main effects of fragrance observed in Example 1.
[0813] Stroop task: Accuracy was higher on congruent trials compared to incongruent trials [V = 1518, Z = 4.77, p < .001, r = 0.62]. Fragrance did not affect accuracy [all p values > 0.4].
[0814] Participants responded faster in congruent trials than incongruent trials [V = 0, Z = 6.73, p < .001, r = 0.87]. Figure 3 A and Figure 3 As shown in B, reaction time RTs also differed significantly between odor conditions, with faster responses, indicating improved mental processing speed in the presence of “Fragrance G” [V = 205, Z = 5.22, p < .001, r = 0.67], “Fragrance H” [V = 622, Z = 2.15, p = .031, r = 0.28], and “Fragrance J” [V = 612, Z = 2.23, p < .026, r = 0.29] compared to control. There was no significant difference in the presence of “Fragrance I” compared to control [V = 868, Z = 0.34, p = .732, r = 0.04]. Incorrect trials, illogical responses, and responses that deviated more than 2.5 standard deviations from the participant mean were removed from the analysis, resulting in the removal of 6.5% of the trials.
[0815] Arithmetic task: As expected, accuracy was higher in the easy task than in the difficult task [V = 1561, Z = 6.22, p < .001, r = 0.80]. Fragrance had no effect on accuracy [all p values > 0.7].
[0816] Participants responded faster in the easy task compared to the difficult task [V = 0, Z = 6.73, p < .001, r = 0.87]. Figure 4 A and Figure 4 As shown in B, compared with the control, shorter RTs were observed in the presence of "Fragrance G" [V = 632, Z = 2.08, p = .038, r = 0.27], "Fragrance H" [V = 636, Z = 2.05, p = .040, r = 0.26], and "Fragrance I" [V = 600, Z = 2.32, p = .021, r = 0.30], but not in the presence of "Fragrance J" [V = 1099, Z = 1.35, p = .177, r = 0.17]. In the difficult task, as Figure 4 C and Figure 4As shown in D, slightly shorter RTs were observed in the presence of “Fragrance H” [V = 653, Z = 1.93, p = .054, r = 0.25] and “Fragrance I” [V = 602, Z = 1.78, p = .075, r = 0.23] compared to the control. In contrast, no differences were observed in the presence of “Fragrance G” [V = 811, Z = 0.76, p = .446, r = 0.10] and “Fragrance J” [V = 762, Z = 1.12, p = .262, r = 0.14] compared to the control. Incorrect trials, illogical responses, and responses that deviated by 2.5 standard deviations from the participant mean were removed from the analysis, resulting in the removal of 6.2% of the trials. Three participants were excluded from the difficult task performed in the “Fragrance I” condition because more than 50% of their trials were removed during RT preprocessing.
[0817] Final questionnaire: Participants reported that they smelled the scent in all four odor conditions and that they found the experience pleasant. As expected, they did not smell any scent in the control condition.
[0818] In summary, all four inventive fragrances showed a significant reduction in RT in at least one condition of the Stroop or arithmetic task, indicating that mental processing speed was improved while accuracy remained constant. Similar to Example 1, the data demonstrate that fragrances specifically designed according to the present disclosure can enhance mental performance and that this effect can be captured by implicit and objective measures.
[0819] Example 4. Sustained Enhancement of Mental Performance Over Time
[0820] Two inventive compositions ("Fragrance A", "Fragrance K") were evaluated for their potential to enhance mental performance during a mental activity lasting two hours.
[0821] Participants: Sixty women (18-40 years, nonsmokers) participated in the study after giving informed consent; they were compensated for their participation. Five participants were excluded from the analysis: one due to data collection problems and four due to noncompliance with the Stroop task instructions. The remaining 55 participants were analyzed.
[0822] Experimental Design: The study consisted of three sessions, with a one-week interval between each session. Each session lasted two hours and was conducted five times, during which participants rated the intensity of the odor, completed the Stroop task, and rated a scale under one of the three odor conditions. During each 20-minute period between the five runs, participants participated in controlled activities such as reading and mandala coloring. Before each Stroop task, participants rated the intensity of the odor. After each Stroop task, they completed a questionnaire containing ten scales to record their psychological state and emotions during the Stroop task. Only the scales on concentration (i.e., alert, active, focused) were considered relevant and used for statistical analysis. The remaining seven scales were included to conceal the purpose of the questionnaire. All scales consisted of a 101-point VAS with "not at all" (0) and "extremely" (100) as the baseline. Each Stroop task repetition lasted 3 minutes, during which participants completed an average of 154.5 trials (SD = 13.0). 0.6% of the trials were eliminated from the analysis because the responses were not recorded correctly.
[0823] Scent conditions: Three sessions were conducted under three odor conditions: (a) with the invented "Fragrance A", (b) with the invented "Fragrance K", and (c) without odor (control condition). Both fragrances were diluted to 15% in a hydroalcoholic solution specifically formulated for high-quality fragrances. The fragrances were applied to a glass slide, which can be indicative of the evaporation behavior of the fragrance from a surface such as human skin. The glass slide was mounted on a harmonica neck frame (K&M 164 / 15), which the participants wore during the entire session. The order of odor presentation was counterbalanced across participants.
[0824] Statistical analysis: Consistent with the methods used in Examples 1 and 3, the RT (reaction time) and reaction accuracy of the Stroop task were analyzed separately. Unlike Examples 1 and 3, parametric statistical tests were used to adapt to multifactorial designs, while nonparametric tests could not capture multifactorial designs. RT and accuracy were subjected to repeated measures ANOVA, with consistency (consistent, inconsistent), number of repetitions (R1, R2, R3, R4, R5) and odor conditions ("Fragrance A", "Fragrance K", control) as within-subject factors. The three scores measuring subjective concentration (alert, active, and focused) were combined into a composite score that had a strong correlation (Spearman coefficient exceeded 0.70). The resulting composite score was then submitted to a repeated measures ANOVA, with the number of repetitions (R1, R2, R3, R4, R5) and odor conditions ("Fragrance A", "Fragrance K", control) as within-subject factors. Greenhouse–Geisser correction was applied to address possible violations of the sphericity assumption. Relevant post hoc comparisons were performed using the Student t test.
[0825] result
[0826] Stroop task: The results observed in Examples 1 and 3 were replicated, and the results were inconsistent [F(1,54)=45.74,p<.001,η 2 p =.46, 90% CI [.29,.57]], the accuracy of the consistent test was higher than that of the consistent test. Figure 5 As shown in A, the accuracy rate decreased significantly in the five repetitions [F(3.48,188.02)=5.83,p<.001,η 2 p =.10, 90% CI [.03,.15]]; these findings are consistent with fatigue due to repeated measures. There was a significant effect of odor condition on accuracy [F(1.92,103.80)=4.14,p=.020,η 2 p =.07, 90% CI [.01, .15]; Figure 6 A and Figure 6 B], the accuracy rate was significantly higher when using “Fragrance K” for the task compared with the control [t(54)=3.10, p=.003, d Z =.42, 95% CI [.14, .69]], the accuracy rate was slightly higher when using “Fragrance A” for the task [t(54)=1.87, p=.067, d Z =.25, 95% CI [-.02, .52]]. The interaction between the number of repetitions and the odor condition was not significant [F(6.25, 337.75) = 1.37, p = .224, η 2 p =.02, 90% CI [.00, .04]], indicating that the benefits of the fragrance of the present invention on mental performance were consistent over the two-hour testing period. No further interactions were significant.
[0827] As expected in the Stroop task, participants responded significantly faster on congruent trials than on incongruent trials [F(1,54)=214.43, p<.001, η 2 p =.80,90% CI[.71,.84]]. like Figure 5 As shown in B, RT decreased significantly over the five repetitions [F(2.93,158.16)=30.13, p<.001, η 2 p =.36, 90% CI [.25,.43]], consistent with a learning effect. RT was not significantly affected by odor condition [F(1.94,104.98)=2.07, p=.133, η 2p =.04, 90% CI [.00,.10]], and no significant interaction was observed. Incorrect trials, illogical responses, and responses that were more than 2.5 SDs away from the participant mean were removed from the analysis, resulting in the removal of 7.1% of the trials.
[0828] Perceptual intensity: Participants reported that they clearly perceived the aroma in both odor conditions across five repetitions.
[0829] Subjective concentration: Figure 5 As shown in C, the subjective concentration score decreased significantly in the five repetitions [F(1.99,107.35)=24.28,p<.001,η 2 p =.31, 90% CI [.19, .41]] indicating fatigue. Compared with the control, there was a significant interaction between the number of repetitions and the odor condition [F(5.67, 306.24) = 2.66, p = .018, η 2 p =.05, 90% CI [.00, .07]; Figure 7 ] indicates that the attention score of “Fragrance K” was significantly higher in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th runs (repeated R2 [t(54) = 3.05, p = .004, d Z =.41,95% CI[.13,.68]], R3[t(54)=3.78,p<.001,d z =.51,95%CI[.23,.79]], R4[t(54)=3.96,p<.001,d z =.53, 95% CI [.25,.81]] and R5 [t(54) = 2.02, p = .048, d z =.27, 95% CI [.00,.54]]), and “Fragrance A” had significantly higher attention scores in the second and third runs, with replicate R2 [t(54)=3.09, p=.003, d z =.42, 95% CI [.14, .69]], and R3 [t(54) = 3.16, p = .003, d z =.43, 95% CI [.15,.70]].
[0830] In summary, the use of the fragrance of the present invention improved the accuracy of the Stroop task repeated five times over a two-hour period. Importantly, reaction time was not significantly affected, indicating an overall improvement in task performance. The fragrance of the present invention was also found to enhance the feeling of prolonged focus. The data show that the fragrance designed according to the present disclosure can improve mental performance during sustained and repeated mental activities, and this effect is evident in both subjective and objective measures.
