Description

[0001] The present invention relates to an agrochemical composition, a precision application device containing the composition and the use thereof.

[0002] Agrochemicals are biologically active materials, such as herbicides used by farmers and growers to control weeds and fungicides and insecticides used to control insects and fungal pests in, on or around their crops. Typically, agrochemicals are provided as concentrates, diluted with water to form a final composition to be applied before application. Typically, the diluted composition of agrochemicals is applied by spraying. Spraying allows relatively fast coverage of large areas. Depending on the scale of application, the spray liquid can be applied manually, by a special spraying device installed on a tractor, or even by an aircraft. Conventional agrochemical spraying usually relies on the pressurized supply using a diluted agrochemical formulation to produce fan-shaped or cone-shaped fine spray droplets from a nozzle. This allows the diluted agrochemical to be uniformly applied to a relatively large area under the sweep of a sprayer.

[0003] Recently, it has been recognized that for some applications, it may be advantageous to use more targeted agrochemical applications rather than uniformly cover the entire area (such as a field). For example, if individual weeds can be identified by an automated recognition system connected to an automated application system, the system should be able to apply herbicides only to those weeds. Similarly, if individual plants infected by insects or fungi can be identified, it should be possible to treat only those infected plants with insecticides or fungicides. Alternatively, for crops grown with regular row spacing, herbicides can be applied only in the space between rows. For herbicides, this will allow the use of non-selective herbicides (herbicides that kill almost all plants) to target weeds in growing crop plants. For all types of agrochemicals, it is also possible to allow the use of agrochemicals with much lower average levels throughout the field, thereby reducing farmers' costs and reducing the amount of agrochemicals in the environment. This targeted spray application is referred to as 'precision application'.

[0004] 'Precision application' is defined as applying agrochemicals to discrete parts of a target site rather than to an entire area (broadcasting). Types of precision application include, but are not limited to, helmet / band application, variable rate application using prescription maps, and optical spot spraying. Precision application also includes this type of targeted application in non-row crop type applications, such as in-furrow application or orchard spraying. For all types of precision application, the application device will likely require specialized nozzles to more accurately guide the agrochemical product, typically these nozzles will be, but are not limited to, hydraulic nozzles or jet-type nozzles at smaller angles. The most complex of the precision application types is optical spot spraying, which includes an imaging system and an analysis system for determining the application location on top of or in place of standard application equipment.

[0005] Precision application requires a different type of spray pattern than conventional spray patterns. Precision spray, by its nature, is not intended to spread and cover a large area, but rather it must ideally land exactly where it is targeted and nowhere else. This requires a spray pattern that is a small liquid jet or fine droplets in a narrow angle fan, rather than the traditional wide angle fan or cone.

[0006] It has been found that highly accurate doses of liquid agrochemicals applied in water rather than broad spraying introduce problems. The problem is that a significant proportion of the spray liquid tends to bounce off or break off the target as small droplets and land at a distance from the target. This introduces a spread of the agrochemical so that it does not all fall exactly where it is expected, but falls additionally on neighboring plants and soil. This undermines the whole concept of precision application. If non-selective herbicides are being used to target weeds, neighboring crop plants may be damaged or killed. For any agrochemical, additional pesticides need to be applied to make up for the waste caused by the material ending up being used where it is not needed.

[0007] Because most agrochemical compositions contain surfactants and emulsifiers, the problem becomes worse. Some of these surfactants and emulsifiers are included to improve the physical or chemical stability of agrochemical concentrates or to improve and maintain the dispersion of diluted agrochemicals in spray tanks. Other surfactants and emulsifiers are included to increase the biological effect of agrochemicals by improving the ability of the dilute composition to be spread on the surface of the target plant or to penetrate the outer surface of the target plant, insect or fungus. Due to their surfactant properties, when liquid falls on the surface, such materials increase the formation of droplets and therefore make the problem of off-target movement worse. Therefore, it is highly desirable to reduce off-target movement, and we refer to it as reducing the fragmentation of composition herein.

[0008] 'Droplet breakup' is defined as the breakup of a primary droplet of nominal diameter upon impact with a surface, which subsequently results in a higher number of smaller secondary droplets that fall outside the initial impact zone. Thus, 'reduction in breakup' is defined as the percentage reduction in the total number of secondary droplets due to a change in composition or a change compared to a reference composition. Thus, there is a need for low breakup compositions and devices suitable for precision application applications.

[0009] Therefore, in a first aspect of the present invention, a composition is provided, comprising:

[0010] agricultural chemicals;

[0011] diutan gum; and

[0012] a carrier fluid, wherein the diutanol is present in an amount of 0.001% to 2% by weight,

[0013] Wherein the carrier fluid comprises water and is present in an amount of 65% to 95% by weight.

[0014] It has surprisingly been found that the composition according to the invention solves the technical challenges set out above.

[0015] Advantageously, the carrier fluid is present in an amount of 68% to 93% by weight, such as 69% to 92% by weight, 70% to 91% by weight, or 71% to 90% by weight.

[0016] Preferably, the carrier fluid comprises water in an amount of from 80% to 100% or from 80% to 99.5% by weight of the carrier fluid.

[0017] Diutan gum may be present in an amount of 0.01% to 0.20% by weight.

[0018] Advantageously, the agricultural chemical is used at the maximum use rate as indicated on the label for the active ingredient.

[0019] The agricultural chemicals may be used in an amount of 0.0001% to 25% by weight, such as 0.001% to 20% by weight, 0.01% to 5% by weight, or 6% to 15% by weight.

[0094]

[0095] method

[0096] Preparation of formulations:

[0097] All polysaccharides were prepared as 1% gels in deionized water by high shear mixing before use.

[0098] The spray solutions were prepared by thoroughly mixing the required amounts of the components as defined in the table below. The balance to 100% by weight in each case was water as carrier fluid.

[0099] Sulfacid Blue 5J was introduced into the spray solution at a final concentration of 0.5% w / w.

[0100] Spray Assessment

[0101] To evaluate the effectiveness of polysaccharides in reducing the breakage of the composition, a custom spray evaluation method was developed. A custom static spray apparatus was built and equipped with a spray nozzle operating at 3.0 ± 0.1 bar. Unless otherwise specified, 10 cm below the nozzle tip was the target surface, a round synthetic fabric substrate (D = 20 mm) on a cylindrical support (20 mm × 80 mm). This surface had a contact angle of 133 ± 2 ° with deionized water and was used to replicate a leaf surface that was difficult to wet.

[0102] The formulation was loaded into the spray equipment and the operating parameters were adjusted to ensure that a 14 ± 1 mg dose of spray solution was applied to the target. Located below the supported target surface was an A4 paper that was used to capture the unretained spray liquid, aided by blue dye for visualization. For each spray scenario, a total of 10 spray events were collected (e.g., repeated 10 times on 10 sheets of paper).

[0103] Compositions 1 to 27 were sprayed with a jet nozzle and compositions 28 to 30 were sprayed with a flat fan nozzle.

[0104] The breakup performance was evaluated in the following manner. 10 A4 capture papers were digitized using a Brother DS-720D scanner operating at 600 dpi. The digitized data was then analyzed using a custom ImageJ macro to verify information on droplet count, coordinates, and area. Performance was evaluated by analyzing the total droplet count, where the reduction in breakage was characterized by a percentage reduction in the total droplet count.

[0105] The results are listed in Tables 2 to 7.

[0106] Figure 1 Digital droplet position data for formulation entries 16, 17, 18 and 21 are provided and demonstrate the significant improvement in performance for the compositions according to the present invention.
