Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method of controlling unwanted vegetation. More particularly, the present disclosure relates to a method of controlling soybean weeds using a synergistic herbicide combination and compositions of the combination. Background of the Invention

[0003] Weeds are undesirable plants that are harmful to agriculture and severely affect crop yields. Farmers use various types of herbicides to control weeds. Herbicides are chemicals specifically formulated to control unwanted plants / weeds.

[0004] Soybean is a widely grown food crop worldwide. Currently, there are about 24 species in the genus Glycine max, of which only two, soybean and wild soybean (G. max and G. soja), are annual plants. Soybean plants that have been genetically engineered to be resistant to the herbicides 2,4-D, glufosinate, and glyphosate are often grown as volunteers in cultivation of other crops such as corn and cotton. Generally, volunteer crop plants are considered weeds because they reduce crop yield and quality, as well as reduce harvesting efficiency. If glyphosate-resistant volunteer soybean populations are high and uncontrolled, they can cause crop yield losses. Volunteer soybeans are a reservoir for plant pathogens to survive between planting seasons and increase the inoculum of soil-borne pathogens. Growers must apply alternative or additional non-glyphosate herbicides to effectively control volunteer glyphosate-resistant soybean plants in glyphosate-resistant corn fields and glyphosate-resistant cotton fields. However, currently known combinations are not sufficient to control resistant and stubborn Glycine max weeds, such as weedy soybean. Soybean (Glycine max) belongs to the leguminous plant family and is distributed in the Americas, Africa, south-central Asia, and Australia. However, currently known herbicide combinations are insufficient to control resistant and persistent weeds such as weedy soybean.

[0005] Hence, there is a continuous need to develop effective herbicide combinations to control the growth of unwanted plants / weeds. Moreover, selective control of unwanted plants / weeds in crops is a key challenge in modern agriculture as herbicide combinations may not always work as expected. Herbicide combinations can produce additive or antagonistic effects. It can also be phytotoxic to crops and thus be a bad combination. Hence, there is a need to carefully select herbicides so that they can work in combination to exert a synergistic effect, control weeds without being phytotoxic to crops and reduce the chances of weed resistance to a particular herbicide.

[0006] Therefore, there is a need in the art for a method of protecting crops from soybean weeds using a combination of herbicides, which has the advantages of synergy, facilitating resistance management, reducing herbicide usage and improving residual effect.

[0049] Glufosinate (also known as glufosinate; DL-homoalanine-4-yl (methyl) phosphonic acid) is a racemic phosphonic acid amino acid (Hoerlein, G. 1994; Glufosinate (glufosinate), a natural amino acid with unexpected herbicidal properties. Rev. of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology 138, 73-145). Its ammonium salt (glufosinate ammonium salt) is widely used as a non-selective herbicide. The L-isomer of glufosinate is a structural analog of glutamate and is therefore a competitive inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (GS) of bacteria and plants (Bayer et al., 1972, Phosphinothricin and phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanin, Helv. Chim. Acta 55, 224-239; Leason et al., 1982, Inhibition of pea leaf glutamine synthetase by methylthiohydroxamic acid, glufosinate and other glutamate analogs J. Phytochem. 21, 855-857). The chemical structures of D-phosphinothricin and L-phosphinothricin are shown below.

[0050]

[0051] As used herein, the term "glufosinate" refers to any racemic phosphonic acid amino acid molecule. The term also includes salts, such as solvates, hydrates, anhydrous forms, crystalline forms, polymorphic forms, pseudopolymorphic forms, amorphous forms or mixtures thereof, and sodium, potassium or ammonium salts. Included in this definition are salts of glufosinate, such as monosodium, disodium, monopotassium, dipotassium, calcium, ammonium, -NH3(CH3) + Salt, -NH2(CH3) 2+ Salt, -NH(CH3) 3+ Salt, -NH(CH3)2(C2H4OH) + Salt and -NH2(CH3)(C2H4OH) +Salts. [0052] As used herein, the term "Glycine max weeds" or "Glycine max weeds" refers to all species belonging to the genus Glycine max of the family Leguminosae, including species such as weedy soybean, soybean, wild soybean, or combinations thereof.

[0053] As used herein, the term "L-phosphinothricin" or "phosphinothricin-P" refers to the L-isomer of phosphinothricin, its salts and esters. The L-enantiomer of phosphinothricin works by inhibiting glutamine synthetase, thereby causing the accumulation of toxic levels of ammonium ions and indirectly stopping photosynthesis. It is also called phosphinothricin or (S)-2-amino-4-(hydroxy(methyl)phosphono)butyric acid. The term can generally refer to any form of L-phosphinothricin, such as solvates, hydrates, esters, anhydrous forms, polymorph forms, pseudopolymorph forms, amorphous forms or mixtures thereof, and sodium salts, potassium salts or ammonium salts. The term may also refer to an isomeric (racemic) mixture of L-glufosinate, D-glufosinate and their salts, wherein the content of L-glufosinate in the mixture is about 70% or more, preferably about 80% or more, more preferably about 90% or more. Typically, the ratio of L-glufosinate: D-glufosinate can be in the range of about 90:10 to about 99.9:0.1, preferably in the range of about 95:5 to about 99.9:0.1.

[0256] The following examples illustrate the composition, basic effects and basic methods of the present disclosure.

[0257] Example

[0258] The following products were used to evaluate the weed control efficacy of this herbicide combination.

[0259] Table 1: Herbicide combinations

[0260]

[0261] Evaluation of post-emergence herbicidal activity:

[0262] method: A trial was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium (glufosinate ammonium) and an additional herbicide on weedy soybeans.

[0263] The soil used was sandy clay loam - sand: 68.0%; silt: 8.0%; clay: 24.0%.

[0264] All treatments were repeated 3 times each, and the spraying rate was about 150 L / ha.

[0265] Efficacy and Evaluation

[0266] The expected efficacy of combinations comprising L-glufosinate and other herbicides was calculated using the well-established Colby method. Any differences between the observed efficacy and the "expected" efficacy can be attributed to a synergistic effect between the two compounds.

[0267] In the Colby method, the expected (or predicted) response of the herbicide combination is calculated by dividing the product of the responses of each component in the combination observed when applied alone by 100, and then subtracting this value from the sum of the responses of each component observed when applied alone. Then, by comparing the observed combined response with the expected (or predicted) response calculated from the observed responses of each individual component, the unexpected enhancement of the combined efficacy can be determined. If the observed combined response is greater than the expected (or predicted) response, or conversely, if the difference between the observed response and the expected response is greater than zero, the combination is said to be synergistic or unexpectedly effective (Colby, SR, Weeds, 1967 (15), pp. 20-22) (Colby, SR, Weeds, 1967 (15), p. 20-22). The Colby method requires only the application of one dose of each herbicide and a mixture of two doses. The formula for calculating the expected efficacy (EE) is explained below, and the expected efficacy is compared with the observed efficacy (OE) to determine the efficacy of the present disclosure:

[0268] The expected effects of the combination of the two active ingredients are as follows:

[0269] EE = (A + B - (A x B) / 100)

[0270] The expected effects of the combination of three active ingredients are as follows:

[0271] EE=A+B+C–(AB+AC+BC) / 100+ABC / 10,000

[0272] in,

[0273] A = observed efficacy of active ingredient A at the same concentration used in the mixture.

[0274] B = observed efficacy of active ingredient B at the same concentration used in the mixture.

[0275] C = observed efficacy of active ingredient C at the same concentration used in the mixture.

[0276] Example 1: Efficacy of the combination of L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-p-ethyl against weedy soybeans

[0277] An experiment was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a herbicide combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-p-ethyl in controlling weedy soybeans.

[0278] Table 2 demonstrates the synergistic efficacy observed on weeds using a combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-p-ethyl. The percent efficacy was calculated 3, 28 and 35 days after application (DAA). The target weed was soybean, and the herbicide concentrations and results are recorded in Table 2.

[0279] Table 2: Efficacy observed on weedy soybeans

[0280]

[0281] *Expected efficacy based on Colby's formula

[0282] Thus, it was observed that applying the herbicide combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-p-ethyl had a synergistic effect on the control of weedy soybean.

[0283] Example 2: Efficacy of the combination of L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-butyl against weedy soybeans

[0284] Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a herbicide combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-butyl in controlling weedy soybeans.

[0285] Table 3 demonstrates the synergistic efficacy observed on weeds using a combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-butyl. The percent efficacy was calculated 3, 28 and 35 days after application (DAA). The target weed was weedy soybean, and the herbicide concentrations and results are recorded in Table 3.

[0286] Table 3: Efficacy observed on weedy soybeans

[0287]

[0288] *Expected efficacy based on Colby's formula

[0289] Thus, it was observed that applying the herbicide combination comprising L-glufosinate ammonium and quizalofop-butyl had a synergistic effect on the control of weedy soybean.

[0290] The results shown in the above examples in Tables 2 and 3 clearly demonstrate the synergistic effect between L-glufosinate ammonium and acetyl-CoA carboxylase inhibitor herbicides. The large difference between the observed efficacy and the expected efficacy clearly demonstrates the synergistic effect of the present herbicide combination.
