Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present technology relates to overall data center configuration, and in particular to power infrastructure and layout configuration of a multi-level modular data center configuration. Background Art

[0002] In order to process large amounts of data in near real time, permanent data centers house and service numerous racks that house electronic equipment (e.g., computer server components, specialized processors, memory components, high-speed network modules, etc.) and supporting infrastructure equipment (e.g., power facilities, air handling systems, liquid cooling structures, etc.).

[0003] Market demand to service the ever-increasing demand for data processing ultimately leads to the need for more data centers. However, the initial investment costs and construction time associated with installing a permanent data center can be prohibitive.

[0004] In response to the high costs of building permanent data centers, various solutions have been proposed that aim to install "modular data centers" where data center electronic computing equipment and supporting infrastructure equipment are incorporated into movable trailers or containers. Depending on the data processing needs, multiple trailers / containers can be deployed and arranged in different single-level geometric configurations distributed over a considerable area. As a result, modular data centers can significantly reduce overall construction time and installation costs compared to permanent data centers, providing faster turnkey operations.

[0005] However, there may be certain space-limited geographic areas with high data processing needs (e.g., urban areas, research parks, etc.) that may not accommodate large modular data center configurations. Therefore, it may be necessary to provide multi-level modular data center configurations with a smaller footprint. It may also be necessary to provide electrical infrastructure and configuration layouts to optimize the limited space within these multi-level modular data centers.

[0006] It should be noted that the subject matter discussed in the background section should not be considered as prior art simply because it is mentioned in the background section. Likewise, the problems mentioned in the background section should not be interpreted as having been recognized in the prior art. Summary of the invention

[0026] The present disclosure is intended to address at least some of the issues associated with space-constrained geographic areas that have high data processing demands and may not be able to accommodate large modular data center configurations. Specifically, the present disclosure proposes various embodiments that provide electrical infrastructure and configuration layouts to optimize limited space within a multi-level modular data center.

[0028] In addition, to aid understanding, the following description may describe a relatively simplified implementation of the present technology. As will be appreciated by those skilled in the art, various implementations of the present technology may have greater complexity.

[0029] In some cases, examples of modifications that are considered useful for the present technology may also be set forth. This is done solely to aid understanding and, again, is not intended to define the scope of the present technology or clarify its boundaries. These modifications are not an exhaustive list, and other modifications may be made by those skilled in the art while remaining within the scope of the present technology. In addition, if no examples of modifications are listed, it should not be interpreted that modifications are impossible and / or that what is described is the only way to implement that element of the present technology.

[0030] In addition, all statements describing the principles, aspects, and implementations of the present technology herein, as well as specific examples thereof, are intended to encompass structural and functional equivalents thereof, whether currently known or developed in the future. Thus, for example, those skilled in the art will appreciate that any block diagrams herein represent conceptual views of illustrative systems embodying the principles of the present technology.

[0031] With these basic principles in place, we will now consider some non-limiting examples to illustrate implementations of the various inventive aspects of the present disclosure.

[0032] In particular, Figure 1 A side elevation view of a multi-level modular data center 100 according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present disclosure is shown. As shown in the figure, the multi-level modular data center 100 is arranged in a vertical stack, which includes a lower receiving unit 110 and an upper receiving unit 120, and the upper receiving unit 120 is vertically aligned and directly disposed above the lower receiving unit 110.

[0033] The storage units 110, 120 may be implemented by a trailer, a container, or other similarly configured structures. The vertical stacking arrangement of the storage units 110, 120 provides the benefit of performing a large number of data processing operations within a relatively limited footprint.

[0034] In the illustrated embodiment, the vertically stacked multi-level modular data center configuration 100 employs a support structure 150 positioned along the lower side of the corner portion of the upper containment unit 120. The vertically stacked multi-level modular data center 100 may also employ a support structure positioned along the lower side of the lateral portion of the upper containment unit 120. The support structure 150 is used to lift, carry, and hold the upper containment unit 120 above the lower containment unit 110 without applying any load-bearing force to the lower containment unit 110. The support structure 150 lifts the upper containment unit 120 above the lower containment unit 110 to create an isolation gap 105 between the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120.

[0035] However, it should be understood that in other embodiments, the upper receiving unit 120 can be supported by and provide a load-bearing force to the lower receiving unit 110. It should be understood that for the purpose of this disclosure, whether the upper receiving unit 120 applies a load-bearing force to the lower receiving unit 110 does not limit the inventive concept presented herein.

[0036] The vertically stacked multi-level modular data center 100 is configured to accommodate numerous racks that contain electronic processing components (not shown) (e.g., computer servers, dedicated processors, memory components, high-speed network modules, etc.) and electrical equipment. Therefore, the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120 need to be installed with electrical equipment / facilities to support and service the power requirements of the electronic processing racks. As will be described in more detail below, the present disclosure proposes various embodiments that provide power infrastructure and configuration layouts to optimize the electrically-communicative cabling connectivity within the limited space of the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120 and between the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120.

[0037] Having said that, if Figure 1 As shown, the vertically stacked multi-level modular data center 100 includes certain openings and conduit structures to accommodate the routing and conduits of electrical communication cables between the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120. Specifically, the lower containment unit 110 includes at least one upper porthole 110A-D disposed on the top surface of the lower containment unit 110, and the upper containment unit 120 includes at least one lower porthole 120A-D disposed on the bottom surface of the upper containment unit 120. The at least one upper porthole 110A-D of the lower containment unit 110 and the at least one lower porthole 120A-D of the upper containment unit 120 are positioned and arranged to be vertically aligned with each other.

[0038] Relatedly, the vertically stacked multi-level modular data center 100 includes at least one power conduit structure 115A-D, which is disposed between the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120 (i.e., installed in the isolation gap 105), and is configured to be aligned with at least one upper porthole 110A-D and at least one lower porthole 120A-D. As shown in the perspective cross-sectional view of at least one power conduit member 115A-D Figure 4As best shown, according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present disclosure, at least one power conduit component 115A-D includes an internal channelized structure for guiding the routing of electrical communication cables and an external structure for protecting the routed electrical communication cables, the external structure comprising a waterproof and fireproof material. In some implementations, the external structure of at least one power conduit component 115A-D may include one or more of the following elements: a metal sleeve, a fireproof sleeve, an expansion strip, a waterproof material, and a fire-resistant material.

[0039] In some embodiments, at least one power conduit component 115A-D may also include: a vertically arranged skirt 115X, which is used to facilitate slidable positioning between at least one upper porthole 110A-D and at least one lower porthole 120A-D; and a horizontally arranged attachment protrusion 115Y, which is used to facilitate a firm fixation with the lower containment unit 110.

[0040] Go to Figure 2 , according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present disclosure, a top view of the internal layout configuration of the lower containment unit 110 of the multi-level modular data center 100 is depicted. The lower containment unit 110 is configured to accommodate at least one uninterruptible power supply unit (UPS) 112, a UPS air handler 102, at least one power distribution center system (PDCS) 114, and a PDCS air cooling system 104. As shown in the figure, the UPS 112 and the UPS air handler 102 are internally disposed in a first portion on one side of the lower containment unit 110, while the PDCS 114 and the PDCS air cooling system 104 are internally disposed in a second portion on the opposite side of the lower containment unit 110. The opposite first and second portions of the lower containment unit 110 are generally separated by an air cooling partition wall 106.

[0041] UPS 112 is configured to provide automatic backup power in the event of a main / utility power outage or failure, and utilizes a battery assembly 122 (described below) of the upper containment unit 120 to supply continuous backup power when a power outage / failure is detected.

[0042] The UPS air handler 102 is configured to provide air cooling for a portion containing the UPS 112. The UPS air handler 102 is designed to be typically installed in a power room as well as an IT room to ensure adequate heat treatment. The UPS air handler 102 fluid is connected to a pumping module (not shown), which is connected to a dry cooler (not shown) and includes a finned heat exchanger (FHEX) and a fan (not shown). Since a plenum is installed above the UPS 112 and the air handler 102 to form a hot channel, the hot air is collected by the fan. The hot air then passes through the FHEX to cool with cold water supplied by the dry cooler. The cold air leaving the air handler 102 is re-inhaled by the heat source. The air handler 102 fan can be located in a hot channel or a cold channel, in other words, before or after the FHEX. In the illustrated embodiment, two air handlers 102 are installed to reduce risk, wherein each air handler 102 can provide, for example, a cooling capacity of 20kW. In this way, if an air handler 102 stops operating due to a failure or maintenance, the second air handler 102 will be able to support the UPS load in a degraded mode.

[0043] PDCS114 includes at least one power distribution center (PDC) 114A and at least one power distribution center UPS (PDCU) 114B. At least one PDC 114A distributes, monitors, controls and optimizes the power distribution of many components of both the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120. At least one PDC 114A is powered by power supplies, which include power transformers, generators and backup power supplies that are mechanically and electrically interlocked (closed conversion) with each other. The internal PLC manages these sources and the PMS. The local switch also manages the PMS from the battery container, the power container and the BMS. PDC 114A complies with the IEC 61439-2 standard and supplies power to different non-UPS loads and 1 or 2 UPSs according to the UPS rated power. PDC 114A is configured to be strategically positioned to accommodate and support PDCU 114B, and the positioning of PDCU 114B is arranged to minimize the cable length required for many components of the lower containment unit 110 and the upper containment unit 120 of the multi-stage modular data center 100.

[0044] At least one PDCU 114B is powered by the UPS 112 output and / or the PDC 114A. The PDCU 114B is electrically and communicatively coupled to the UPS 112, the PDC 114A, and the cooling system of the lower receiving unit 110. It is mainly used to power IT loads through an MCCB (molded case circuit breaker) with an electronic trip unit. The PDC 114B complies with the IEC 61439-2 standard.

[0045] The PDCS air cooling system 104 includes an air conditioning condenser 104A for removing heated air from a portion containing at least one PDC 114A and at least one PDCU 114B and providing cooled air therethrough.

[0046] In this way, the air cooling partition wall 106 of the lower receiving unit 110 is used to separate and isolate the air cooling operations of the respective first and second parts including at least one UPS 112 from the PDCS 114 .

[0047] Figure 3 A top view of the internal layout configuration of the upper containment unit 120 of the multi-level modular data center 100 according to a non-limiting embodiment of the present disclosure is shown. [0053] The battery assembly air cooling system 130 includes an air conditioning unit configured to supply cooling air through a ventilation duct configuration 130A. The air cooling partition wall 128 of the upper receiving unit 120 is used to separate and isolate the air cooling operation of the corresponding part containing at least one battery assembly 122 from at least one transformer 124. In addition, the partition wall 128 provides protection for operators in the passage in the event of a fire caused by a failure of the transformer 124.

[0054] As described above, the disclosed embodiments provide that the positioning of at least one battery assembly 122 of the upper receiving unit 120 is substantially aligned vertically with the positioning of the UPS 112 of the lower receiving unit 110. The disclosed embodiments further provide that the positioning of at least one transformer 124 of the upper receiving unit 120 is substantially aligned vertically with the positioning of the PDCS 114 of the lower receiving unit 110.

[0055] It should be appreciated that the disclosed layout positioning of battery assembly 122 generally vertically aligned with UPS 112 and transformer 124 generally vertically aligned with PDC 114A provides a multi-level modular data center 100 configuration that substantially minimizes required cable lengths and reduces installation complexity and associated costs.
