Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates to a method of controlling unwanted vegetation / weeds. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a method of controlling Amaranthus weeds using a synergistic herbicide combination and compositions of said combination. Background Art

[0002] Weeds are undesirable plants that are harmful to agriculture and severely affect crop yields. Farmers use various types of herbicides to control weeds. Herbicides are chemicals specifically formulated to control unwanted plants / weeds.

[0003] Amaranthus is a widespread genus of annual or short-lived perennial plants, collectively known as Amaranthus plants. Also known as pigweed, this widespread genus of Amaranthus has about 70 species. Amaranthus hybridus is known as smooth pigweed. Amaranthus hybridus is a species in the Amaranthaceae family. It is found in America, Africa, Central and South Asia, and Australia. Amaranthus rugosa is another species in the Amaranthaceae family. It is found in different regions including Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania, and South America.

[0004] Certain unwanted plant / weed species or unwanted plant / weed populations are not sensitive to certain herbicides. This may be because the herbicides use different biochemical pathways. In situations where one herbicide is ineffective, another herbicide with a different mode of action may achieve better results. Therefore, there is a need to continuously develop effective herbicide combinations to control the growth of unwanted plants / weeds. Currently known herbicides in the art, whether used alone or in combination, are not sufficient to control resistant and persistent Amaranthus weeds, such as Amaranthus oleraceus or Amaranthus rubra.

[0005] Furthermore, selective control of unwanted plants / weeds in crops is a key challenge in modern agriculture. Moreover, herbicides may not always work as expected. Combinations of herbicides may sometimes produce additive or antagonistic effects. It may also be phytotoxic to crops and thus be a bad combination. Therefore, herbicides need to be carefully selected so that they work in combination to exert a synergistic effect, control weeds without being phytotoxic to crops and reduce the chances of weed resistance to a particular herbicide.

[0006] Therefore, there is a need in the art for a method of protecting crops from Amaranthus weeds using a combination of herbicides, which has the advantages of synergy, facilitating resistance management, reducing herbicide usage and improving residual effect. Summary of the invention

[0067] Glufosinate (also known as phosphinothricin; DL-homoalanine-4-yl (methyl)phosphonic acid), is a non-proteinogenic α-amino acid, namely 2-aminobutyric acid, with the 4-position substituted by a hydroxy (methyl) phosphinothricin. It is a member of the phosphonic acid class and an α-amino acid of non-protein origin. Its ammonium salt (glufosinate ammonium salt) is widely used as a non-selective herbicide and is the active ingredient of various commercial herbicide formulations. Glufosinate has two optical isomers, namely the L-isomer and the D-isomer, of which the L-isomer is highly efficient and the D-isomer is inactive. In addition, L-glufosinate is more environmentally friendly, thereby reducing the use of pesticides and improving the efficiency of pesticide application. The L isomer of glufosinate is a structural analog of glutamate and is therefore a competitive inhibitor of glutamine synthetase (GS) in bacteria and plants (Bayer et al., 1972, Phosphinothricin and phosphinothricyl-alanyl-alanin, Swiss Journal of Chemistry 55, 224-239; Leason et al., 1982, Inhibition of pea leaf glutamine synthetase by methioninsulfoximine, Phosphinothricin and other glutamate analogs, Phytochemistry (Journal) 21, 855-857). The chemical structures of D-glufosinate and L-glufosinate are shown below.

[0068]

[0069] As used herein, the term "phosphinothricin" refers to any racemic phosphonic acid amino acid molecule. The term also includes salts, such as solvates, hydrates, anhydrous forms, crystalline forms, polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs, amorphous forms or mixtures thereof, and sodium, potassium or ammonium salts. The definition includes salts of glufosinate such as monosodium, disodium, monopotassium, dipotassium, calcium, ammonium, -NH3(CH3) + Salt, -NH2(CH3) 2+ Salt, -NH(CH3) 3+ Salt, -NH(CH3)2(C2H4OH) + Salt and -NH2(CH3)(C2H4OH) + Salt. The agrochemically acceptable salt includes glufosinate ammonium salt, glufosinate sodium salt, glufosinate potassium salt or a combination thereof.

[0070] As used herein, the term "L-phosphinothricin" includes L-isomers, salts and esters of glufosinate. The L-enantiomer of glufosinate works by inhibiting glutamine synthetase, resulting in the accumulation of toxic levels of ammonium ions and indirectly inhibiting photosynthesis. It is also known as phosphinothricin or (S)-2-amino-4-(hydroxy(methyl)phosphono)butyric acid. The term can generally refer to any form of L-phosphinothricin, such as solvates, hydrates, esters, anhydrous forms, polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs, amorphous forms or mixtures thereof, as well as sodium salts, potassium salts or ammonium salts. Included in this definition are salts of L-phosphinothricin, such as monosodium salts, disodium salts, monopotassium salts, dipotassium salts, calcium salts, ammonium salts, -NH3(CH3) + Salt, -NH2(CH3) 2+ Salt, -NH(CH3) 3+ Salt, -NH(CH3) 2 (C2H4OH) + Salt and -NH2(CH3)(C2H4OH) + Salt. The agriculturally chemically acceptable salt includes L-phosphine ammonium salt, L-phosphine sodium salt, L-phosphine potassium salt or a combination thereof. The term may also refer to an isomer (racemic) mixture of L-phosphine ammonium, D-phosphine ammonium and its salt, wherein the content of L-phosphine ammonium in the mixture is 70% or higher, preferably 80% or higher, more preferably 90% or higher. Typically, the ratio of L-phosphine ammonium to D-phosphine ammonium can be in the range of about 90:10 to about 99.9:0.1, preferably in the range of about 95:5 to about 99.9:0.1.

[0071] The term "Amaranth weeds" refers to all species within the genus Amaranth in the family Amaranthaceae, including the following: Amaranthus spinulosa, Amaranthus incisus, Amaranthus whitlock, Amaranthus scaly, Amaranthus calyx, Amaranthus sulphureus ... Amaranth, ...

[0083] (d) acetolactate synthase inhibitor herbicides;

[0084] (e) hydroxyphenylpyruvate dioxygenase inhibitor herbicides;

[0085] or a combination thereof.

[0086] It has been found that in the combination of the present invention, L-phosphinothricin, its salts, esters or their combination and other herbicides provide a synergistic effect in controlling Amaranthus weeds. The synergistic degree of the above combination in controlling Amaranthus weeds is unpredictable and unexpected. In addition, the above characteristics and advantages are needed in actual weed control to protect crops from unwanted competing plants, thereby ensuring and / or increasing the yield of plants in terms of quality and quantity.

[0395]

[0396] Evaluation of post-emergence herbicidal activity:

[0397] method : Trials were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of a combination comprising L-glufosinate and an additional herbicide against Amaranthus weeds.

[0398] The soil used was sandy clay loam - sand: 68.0%; silt: 8.0%; clay: 24.0%.

[0399] All treatments were replicated three times and the spraying volume was 150 L / ha.

[0400] Efficacy evaluation : The expected efficacy of a combination comprising L-glufosinate and an additional herbicide was calculated using the well-established Colby method. Any differences between the observed efficacy and the expected efficacy can be attributed to the synergistic effect exhibited by the combination.

[0401] In the Colby method, the expected (or predicted) response of a herbicide combination is calculated by dividing the product of the observed responses of each component in the combination when applied alone by 100, and then subtracting that value from the sum of the observed responses of each component when applied alone. The unexpected enhancement of the efficacy of the combination can then be determined by comparing the observed combined response with the expected (or predicted) response calculated from the observed responses of each individual component. If the observed combined response is greater than the expected (or predicted) response, or conversely, if the difference between the observed response and the expected response is greater than zero, the combination is said to be synergistic or unexpectedly effective (Colby, SR, Weeds, 1967 (15), pp. 20-22). The Colby method requires only the application of one dose of each herbicide alone and a mixture of two doses. The formula for calculating the expected efficacy (EE), which is compared to the observed efficacy (OE) to determine the efficacy of the present disclosure, is explained here:

[0402] The expected efficacy of the combination of two active ingredients is as follows: EE = (A + B - (A × B) / 100)

[0403] The expected efficacy of the combination of three active ingredients is as follows: EE = A + B + C - (AB + AC + BC) / 100 + ABC / 10,000, where:

[0404] A = observed efficacy of active ingredient A at the same concentration used in the mixture.

[0405] B = observed efficacy of active ingredient B at the same concentration used in the mixture.

[0406] C = the observed efficacy of active ingredient C at the same concentration used in the mixture.
