AI Technical Summary
In the prior art, although physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) interleaving can improve the fault tolerance of the channel, it brings about a shortening of battery life and an increase in communication delay, affecting spectral efficiency.
By dynamically switching PDCCH interleaving, the base station decides whether to stop or resume PDCCH interleaving based on the radio measurement report from the user equipment (UE) to determine whether a certain threshold is met, thereby reducing the use of interleaving when the radio conditions allow.
This technology extends the UE's battery life, reduces communication delays, and improves the spectrum efficiency of wireless networks by reducing the UE's power consumption.

Abstract
Description
Background Art
[0001] The Physical Downlink Control Channel (PDCCH) is a critical logical radio channel through which the User Equipment (UE) understands which radio resource elements to use in the time and frequency domain to determine scheduling information for downlink (DL) broadcast and DL / uplink (UL) unicast data transmissions. For example, the PDCCH transmits DL Control Information (DCI). Due to the importance of the information it carries, it is beneficial to ensure that the PDCCH is a sufficiently robust channel that can be easily decoded even under adverse radio conditions.
[0002] One technique to ensure the robustness of the PDCCH is interleaving. The purpose of using interleaving is to make the PDCCH more tolerant to burst errors that might otherwise overwhelm the error correction capabilities of the channel. The idea is that after deinterleaving, a single burst error (which would otherwise overwhelm the error correction) becomes a series of shorter errors that are spread out over a longer portion of the data stream and are therefore correctable - because each of the multiple smaller errors is within the correction capability of the error correction.
[0003] However, interleaving comes with at least two costs: one is that deinterleaving consumes the UE's battery power because it requires the UE to spend processing cycles instead of just decoding symbols. Another is that it introduces communication delays, which reduces spectral efficiency. When data is interleaved, the symbols are spread out in time, and the time spent transmitting each symbol is longer than when interleaving is not used. On reception, decoding of the symbols is again delayed by the time required for deinterleaving. Summary of the invention
[0004] The following summary is provided to illustrate examples disclosed herein and is not meant to limit all examples to any specific configuration or sequence of operations.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION
[0014] A solution for dynamically switching physical downlink control channel (PDCCH) interleaving includes: a base station receives a radio measurement report from a user equipment (UE); determines, at least based on the radio measurement report, that radio reception by the UE satisfies a threshold; and stops interleaving data on the PDCCH based at least on satisfying the threshold. The base station continues to monitor the radio measurement report from the UE, and resumes interleaving data transmitted on the PDCCH based at least on the radio measurement report indicating that radio reception by the UE satisfies a second threshold. In some examples, UEs are managed in a broadcast group (e.g., UEs in a common area in a cell sector), and interleaving or stopping interleaving is based on determining whether all UEs in the broadcast group can reliably decode the PDCCH without interleaving.
[0015] Various aspects of the present disclosure improve the efficiency of cellular communications by extending the battery life of the UE and reducing communication delays. This is achieved by dynamically switching PDCCH interleaving off in practical situations, which reduces the need for the UE to complete power consumption calculations and eliminates deinterleaving delays, and switches PDCCH interleaving back when necessary to ensure channel reliability. When radio conditions permit, this reduces the overhead of both the UE and the base station and improves the spectral efficiency of the wireless network. For example, specific actions taken to promote this advantageous operation include at least based on determining that radio reception by the UE meets a threshold, indicating to the UE by the base station that PDCCH interleaving will stop, and transmitting data on the PDCCH by the base station without interleaving.
[0016] Now referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 An arrangement 100 is shown that advantageously provides for dynamically switching PDCCH interlaces. In the arrangement 100, a wireless network 110 provides a data service session 106 for a UE 102a, such as a voice call with another UE 104 or a data packet session with a packet data network 144. A base station 112 of the wireless network 110 provides services to and communicates with the UE 102a using an air interface 108. Signaling for establishing the data service session 106 is passed from the base station 112 to a session management node 124 via an access node 122. Data packets of the data service session 106 are passed from the base station 112 to an Internet Protocol (IP) Multimedia System (IMS) 140, which has an IMS access media gateway (IMS-AGW) 142, via a packet routing node 126 and a proxy node 128. Another network connects the IMS-AGW 142 to the UE 104 and / or the packet data network 144.
[0017] In some examples, wireless network 110 may include a fifth generation (5G) cellular network or another wireless network. For 5G wireless network 110, base station 112 may include a gNodeB (gNB), access node 122 may include an access and mobility management function (AMF), session management node 124 may include a session management function (SMF), and packet routing node 126 may include a user plane function (UPF). In some examples, proxy node 128 includes a proxy call session control function (P-CSCF).
[0018] The 5G cellular network adopts control plane and user plane separation (CUPS) to separate the wireless network 110 into a control plane and a user plane. The control plane includes at least an access node 122 and a session management node 124. The user plane includes at least a packet routing node 126 and a proxy node 128. Data packets for signaling and data session control are routed between the base station 112 and the session management node 124 through the access node 122.
[0019] Access node 122 supports termination of non-access stratum (NAS) signaling, which is a functional layer in the wireless telecommunications protocol stack between the core network equipment of wireless network 110 and the UE. NAS signaling is used to manage the establishment of communication sessions and to maintain continuous communication with user equipment as the user equipment moves. Base station 112 selects access node 122 for a particular UE (from multiple access nodes in wireless network 110) based on network slicing constraints and support requested by the UE. Network slicing divides wireless network 110 into multiple virtual networks.
[0020] One function of access node 122 is to route control plane data packets between base station 112 and session management node 124. The network segment between base station 112 and access node 122 uses an N2 reference interface, and the network segment between access node 122 and session management node 124 uses an N11 reference interface.
[0021] Session management node 124 is responsible for interacting with the decoupled data plane, creating, updating and deleting protocol data unit (PDU) sessions, and managing session contexts with packet routing nodes 126. The network segment between session management node 124 and packet routing nodes 126 uses the N4 reference interface.
[0022] Packet routing node 126 performs data packet routing and forwarding, packet inspection, and quality of service (QoS) processing for user plane data packets. Packet routing node 126 handles external protocol data unit (PDU) sessions between wireless network 110 and an external data network (DN) (e.g., the Internet). One function of packet routing node 126 is to route user plane data packets between base station 112 and proxy node 128 under the management of session management node 124. The network segment between base station 112 and packet routing node 126 uses an N3 reference interface, the network segment between packet routing node 126 and the external data network (DN) uses an N6 reference interface, and the network segment between packet routing node 126 and proxy node 128 uses a Gm reference interface.
[0023] The proxy node 128 is a contact point between the wireless network 110 and the IMS 140 and acts as a proxy server for UEs whose user plane data packets pass through the base station 112 and the packet routing node 126. Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) signaling traffic to and from the UE passes through the proxy node 128. The UE discovers the proxy node 128 via a discovery process using a network function (NF) repository function (NRF) in the wireless network 110. The proxy node 128 can be located within the wireless network 110 or within the IMS 140.
[0024] CUPS has multiple advantages. One advantage is that the session management node 124 can be located in a centralized location for ease of management, while the packet routing node 126 can be located elsewhere based on latency and other performance issues for user plane data traffic between the UE and the external DN or IMS 140. This is a key performance enhancement for highly mobile connected applications and geographically dispersed wireless network 110 examples. Another advantage is that the wireless network 110 can scale the control plane capacity and user plane capacity separately based on the actual and expected dominant traffic types.
[0025] Cellular networks may use Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiple Access (OFDMA), which uses a combination of Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) and Time Domain Multiple Access (TDMA). With TDMA, all UEs served by a base station must confine their transmissions to the allocated time slots. This information is provided in the PDCCH. In some examples, the PDCCH is a broadcast channel because it is received and processed by multiple UEs. Figure 1 In the example shown, the base station 112 serves four UEs, namely, UE 102a, UE 102b, UE 102c, and UE 102d.
[0026] UE 102a and UE 102b are located in a common sector of base station 112 and receive and use the same PDCCH broadcasted on common PDCCH 202 (eg, Figure 2 106a). Thus, UE 102a and UE 102b are located in PDCCH broadcast group 106a. UE 102c and UE 102d are located in a common sector with each other, but are different from UE 102a and UE 102b, and are therefore located in different PDCCH broadcast groups 106b. UE 102c and UE 102d can use different PDCCHs. In some examples, base station 112 switches the interleaving of PDCCH 202 independently of switching the interleaving of PDCCH used by UE 102c and UE 102d.
[0027] The base station 112 has an interleaving control 130 that controls the interleaving of the PDCCH 202 and any other PDCCH transmitted by the base station 112, as described below. The base station 112 also has a timer 132 for use by the interleaving control 130 to support the determination of whether to switch interleaving. The UE 102a has an interleaving control 134 that switches the deinterleaving of the received PDCCH 202, as described below. The UEs 102b-102d also have similar interleaving control functions.
[0028] The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) technical standard TS 36.211 (with the equivalent European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) technical standard TS 136.211) specifies the 5G PDCCH format, for example in Section 6.8. Section 6.8.5 ("Mapping to Resource Elements") specifies the interleaving algorithm for the PDCCH in 5G. However, it should be understood that the examples of the present disclosure may also be applicable to other cellular generations and other networks.
[0029] Figure 2 A message sequence diagram 200 of exemplary messages that may occur with an example of arrangement 100 is shown. Base station 112 uses PDCCH 202 to notify UE 102a and UE 102b of scheduling information and other control information, such as which radio resource elements to use. Data 204 may be downlink control information (DCI), which is transmitted in an interleaved manner as message 214 on PDCCH 202 and received by UE 102a and UE 102b. Both UE 102a and UE 102b deinterleave message 214 and extract relevant information thereof. For example, interleaving control 134 deinterleaves data 204 of UE 102a. In some examples, message 214 may have some information related to both UE 102a and UE 102b, some information related only to UE 102a, and some information related only to UE 102b.
[0030] UE 102a collects radio signal level measurements and transmits radio measurement reports 206 (e.g., signal to interference and noise ratio (SINR), reference signal received power (RSRP), or reference signal received quality (RSRQ)) to base station 112 as message 216. In some examples, UE 102a collects radio signal level measurements and transmits radio measurement reports on a schedule (e.g., every 20 milliseconds (ms)). Thus, transmitting radio measurement reports 206 represents a plurality of transmitting radio measurement reports. In some examples, the plurality of radio measurement reports 206 are made at or near a frequency band of PDCCH 202. For example, the received signal power of PDCCH 202 can be measured.
[0031] Similarly, UE 102b collects equivalent radio signal level measurements and transmits a plurality of radio measurement reports 208 to base station 112 as message 218. Base station 112 uses the plurality of radio measurement reports 206 and 208 to determine whether to switch the interleaving of PDCCH 202 in a switching decision 230. In the illustrated example, switching decision 230 results in base station 112 deciding to stop PDCCH interleaving. In some examples, this may be the case when both UE 102a and UE 102b receive strong radio signals for PDCCH 202 such that interleaving is not required to maintain reliable decoding in the presence of interference and other noise. The decision process is performed by interleaving control 130 and will be combined with Figure 3A-Figure 4 Described in further detail.
[0032] The base station 112 indicates to the UEs 102a and 102b that PDCCH interleaving is being stopped using at least one message 232a to the UE 102a. In some examples, a combined message to all UEs receiving the PDCCH broadcast is used instead of transmitting separate messages to individual UEs, although Figure 2 Transmission to UE 102b using an optional separate message 232b is shown. In some examples, PDCCH 202 is used for message 232a and / or 232b, although in some examples, different channels are used. Data 224 is then transmitted on PDCCH 202 as message 234 without interleaving. Interleaving control 134 stops deinterleaving data received on PDCCH 202.
[0033] UE 102a and UE 102b continue to collect radio signal level measurements and transmit radio measurement reports to base station 112. For example, UE 102a transmits multiple radio measurement reports 226 as message 236, while UE 102b transmits multiple radio measurement reports 228 as message 238. Base station 112 uses multiple radio measurement reports 226 and 228 to determine whether to switch the interleaving of PDCCH 202 in switching decision 250. In the illustrated example, switching decision 250 results in base station 112 deciding to restore PDCCH interleaving. In some examples, this may be the case when UE 102a or UE 102b is receiving such a weak radio signal of PDCCH 202 that interleaving may be required in order to maintain reliable decoding in the presence of interference and other noise. The decision process is performed by interleaving control 130 and will be combined with Figure 3A-Figure 4 A further detailed description is given.
[0034] The base station 112 indicates to the UEs 102a and 102b that PDCCH interleaving is being restored using at least one message 252a to the UE 102a. In some examples, a combined message to all UEs receiving the PDCCH broadcast is used instead of transmitting separate messages to individual UEs, although Figure 2 Transmission to UE 102b using optional separate message 252b is shown. In some examples, PDCCH 202 is used for message 252a and / or 252b, although in some examples, different channels are used. Data 244 is then interleaved for transmission as message 254 on PDCCH 202. Interleaving control 134 deinterleaves data 244 for UE 102a.
[0035] The example of arrangement 100 uses a threshold value of radio signal quality to determine whether to switch PDCCH interlace, Figure 3A , Figure 3B and Figure 3C Some example thresholds are shown in . Figure 3A 3, a graph 300 plots a radio reception parameter 302 (e.g., radio signal power level, SINR, composite parameter, etc.) over time, based at least in part on measurements reported by UE 102a. Radio reception parameter 302 generally increases over time and exceeds threshold 304. This may occur, for example, if UE 102a is moving toward base station 112, and the propagation loss of PDCCH 202 decreases as UE 102a approaches base station 112 and the transmission path length decreases.
[0036] During time period 310, radio reception parameter 302 is generally below threshold 304, while during time period 314, radio reception parameter 302 is above threshold 304. During time period 310, radio reception parameter 302 briefly rises above threshold 304 for a short time period 312 and then drops below threshold 304 again. If base station 112 switches PDCCH interlaces immediately without any delay, PDCCH interlaces may be turned off and on in a rapid ping-pong manner. To prevent this, timer 132 is used in some examples (see Figure 1 ) introduces a delay before the switching event.
[0037] exist Figure 3A In the scenario shown, PDCCH 202 will be interleaved during time period 310 , and will be interleaved for a short period of time in time period 314 , and then PDCCH 202 will not be interleaved for the remainder of time period 314 .
[0038] exist Figure 3B3, graph 320 plots a radio reception parameter 322 for UE 102a, which may be the same as radio reception parameter 302, but at a different time. Radio reception parameter 322 generally decreases over time and exceeds threshold 324. This may occur, for example, if UE 102a is moving away from base station 112 and the propagation loss of PDCCH 202 increases as the transmission path length increases. During time period 330, radio reception parameter 322 is generally above threshold 324, and during time period 334, radio reception parameter 322 is below threshold 324. Delays may be used for both switching directions, i.e., from on to off and from off to on.
[0039] exist Figure 3B In the scenario shown, PDCCH 202 will not be interleaved during time period 330 , will not be interleaved for a short period of time in time period 334 , and then PDCCH 202 will be interleaved for the remainder of time period 334 .
[0040] In some examples, threshold 324 is lower than threshold 304, so the received signal power required to trigger interleaving to switch from on to off is higher than the received signal power required to trigger interleaving to switch from off to on. This introduces a hysteresis condition, thereby reducing the likelihood of a ping-pong effect that might otherwise occur if the radio reception of UE 102a oscillates rapidly above and below threshold 304. Under the hysteresis condition, once interleaving stops, radio reception must drop by a significant amount before interleaving resumes.
[0041] Figure 3C Composite thresholds are shown where two conditions must be met for the threshold as a whole to be met. For example, threshold 304 is shown as a threshold number 306 of radio measurement reports that meet threshold radio signal level 308, and threshold 324 is shown as a threshold number 326 of radio measurement reports that meet threshold radio signal level 328. In some examples, threshold number 306 and threshold number 326 are the same or nearly the same, and threshold radio signal level 308 is at least as great as threshold radio signal level 328.
[0042] In some examples, the threshold number 306 and / or 326 is 40 or 50 and can be set as a number (without reference to the timer 132), or can be set based on a time interval (measured by the timer 132) and the rate at which the UE 102a transmits measurement reports (e.g., 50 reports in 1 second (at 20 ms intervals)). In some examples, the threshold number 306 is further determined using a minimum number of radio measurement reports evaluated, and a percentage of the minimum number of radio measurement reports exceeding a threshold radio signal level 308. Some examples may require that all radio measurement reports within a period of time exceed the threshold radio signal level 308. A possible example of the threshold number 306 may be that within a full second, 80% of the measurements exceed the threshold radio signal level 308, i.e., 0.8x1 / 0.02=40. Many other equivalent values are also possible.
[0043] In some examples, threshold radio signal level 308 is -100 decibel milliwatts (dBm), or -105 dBm, or some other value. In some examples, threshold radio signal level 328 is 1 dBm, 2 dBm, 3 dBm, 5 dBm, or some other amount below threshold radio signal level 308.
[0044] Figure 4 A flowchart 400 is shown of exemplary operations associated with an arrangement 100 for providing a data service session 106 for a UE 102a. In some examples, at least a portion of the flowchart 400 may be used. Figure 6 106 is executed by one or more computing devices 600 (e.g., base station 112, access node 122, session management node 124, packet routing node 126, and proxy node 128 can use an example of computing device 600). In some examples, wireless network 110 includes a 5G wireless network. In some examples, data service session 106 includes a voice session or a packet data session (other than a voice session).
[0045] Flowchart 400 begins with UE 102 registering with base station 112 at operation 402, such that base station 112 is a serving base station for UE 102a. In some examples, base station 112 includes a gNB and / or interleaved PDCCH 202 by default. Operation 404 includes base station 112 interleaving data (e.g., data 204) transmitted on PDCCH 202. At operation 406, UE 102a and UE 102b receive and deinterleave the data received on PDCCH 202. Figure 1In the illustrated scenario, UE 102a and UE 102b are in PDCCH broadcast group 106a. Additional UEs served by base station 112, such as UE 102c and UE 102d, are in a separate PDCCH broadcast group 106b.
[0046] In operation 408, UE 102a collects radio measurement values and transmits a plurality of radio measurement reports 206 to base station 112 in operation 410. In some examples, each measurement report includes at least one signal parameter selected from a list consisting of: SINR, RSRP, and RSRQ. In some examples, UE 102a transmits measurement reports on a schedule, such as at intervals of 20 ms or greater. In operation 412, base station 112 receives a plurality of radio measurement reports 206 from UE 102a.
[0047] In decision operation 414, wireless network 110 (possibly using interleaving control 130 at base station 112) determines whether radio reception by UE 102a meets threshold 304 based on at least a plurality of radio measurement reports 206. This is used to determine whether to stop or resume PDCCH interleaving. In some examples, determining whether to stop or resume PDCCH interleaving is performed independently for each PDCCH broadcast group. This means that decision operation 414 is performed separately for PDCCH broadcast groups 106a and 106b. In some examples, threshold 304 includes a composite threshold value, which includes a threshold number 306 of radio measurement reports indicating that the radio signal received by UE 102a from base station 112 reaches or exceeds a threshold radio signal level 308.
[0048] In some examples, the plurality of radio measurement reports 206 include a minimum number of radio measurement reports. In some examples, the threshold number 306 is less than or equal to the minimum number of radio measurement reports. In some examples, the threshold number 306 is at least partially determined by the timer 132 and the rate of the UE 102a measurement reports. In some examples, the setting of the threshold number 306 is not referenced to the timer. In some examples, the threshold number 306 is at least partially determined by a percentage of the minimum number of radio measurement reports. In some examples, the threshold number 306 of radio measurement reports is at least 40. In some examples, the threshold radio signal level 308 is based at least on the frequency band of the PDCCH 202. In some examples, the threshold radio signal level 308 is -100 dBm or -105 dBm.
[0049] If the radio reception by the UE 102a does not satisfy the threshold 304 (i.e., the radio reception is not good enough to suspend PDCCH interleaving), the flowchart 400 returns to operation 404. Otherwise, if the radio reception by the UE 102a is good enough to suspend PDCCH interleaving, the wireless network 110 determines in a decision operation 414 that the radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 304 based on at least the plurality of radio measurement reports 206. In some examples, determining to stop PDCCH interleaving includes determining that the radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 304, and that the radio reception by the UE 102b satisfies the threshold 304.
[0050] Operation 416 includes indicating, by the base station 112, to the UE 102a that PDCCH interleaving is being stopped, based at least on a determination that radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 304. At operation 418, the UE 102a receives the instruction as a message 232a from the base station 112. At operation 420, the base station 112 transmits data (e.g., data 224) on the PDCCH 202 without interleaving. At operation 422, based at least on receiving the message 232a, the UE 102a stops deinterleaving data received on the PDCCH 202.
[0051] In operation 424, the UE 102a collects radio measurements and transmits a plurality of radio measurement reports 226 to the base station 112 in operation 426. In operation 428, the base station 112 receives the plurality of radio measurement reports 226 from the UE 102a.
[0052] In decision operation 430, the wireless network 110 determines whether the radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 324 based on at least the plurality of radio measurement reports 226. This is used to determine whether to resume PDCCH interleaving. In some examples, the decision operation 430 is performed independently for each PDCCH broadcast group. In some examples, the threshold 324 includes a composite threshold that includes a threshold number 326 of radio measurement reports indicating that the radio signal received by the UE 102a from the base station 112 does not meet the threshold radio signal level 328. Meeting the threshold 324 as defined herein indicates poor performance such that the measured radio parameter is below a reference value (e.g., the threshold radio signal level 328).
[0053] In some examples, threshold radio signal level 328 is lower than threshold radio signal level 308, e.g., at least 1 dBm lower, although in some examples, threshold radio signal level 328 may be the same. In some examples, threshold radio signal level 328 is based on at least a frequency band of PDCCH 202. In some examples, threshold number 326 is the same as threshold number 306, although in some examples, these numbers may be different.
[0054] If the radio reception by the UE 102a does not satisfy the threshold 324 (i.e., the radio reception is good enough that PDCCH interleaving can remain suspended), the flowchart 400 returns to operation 420. Otherwise, if the radio reception by the UE 102a is poor enough that PDCCH interleaving should be resumed, the wireless network 110 determines in a decision operation 430 that the radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 324 based on at least the plurality of radio measurement reports 226. In some examples, determining to resume PDCCH interleaving includes determining that the radio reception by the UE 102a satisfies the threshold 324, or that the radio reception by the UE 102b satisfies the threshold 324.
[0055] Operation 432 includes, based at least on determining that radio reception by UE 102a satisfies threshold 324, indicating, by base station 112, to UE 102a that PDCCH interleaving is being resumed. In operation 434, UE 102a receives the instruction as message 252a from base station 112. Then, flowchart 400 returns to operation 404. In the next through operation 404, base station 112 transmits data (e.g., data 244) on PDCCH 202 using interleaving. In addition, in the next through flowchart 400, operation 404 includes, based at least on receiving the second message, deinterleaving the data received by UE 102a on PDCCH 202.
[0056] Figure 5 A flowchart 500 is shown that illustrates exemplary operations associated with an example of arrangement 100. In some examples, at least a portion of flowchart 500 may be used. Figure 6 The flowchart 500 begins with operation 502, which includes interleaving data transmitted on a PDCCH by a base station.
[0057] Operation 504 includes receiving, by the base station, a plurality of first radio measurement reports from the first UE. Operation 506 includes determining, by the wireless network at least based on the plurality of first radio measurement reports, that radio reception by the first UE satisfies a first threshold. Operation 508 includes indicating, by the base station at least based on determining that radio reception by the first UE satisfies the first threshold, to the first UE that PDCCH interleaving is stopping. Operation 510 includes transmitting, by the base station, data on the PDCCH without interleaving.
