[0002] This application claims the benefit of priority to Korean Patent Application No. 10-2022-0167127 filed on December 2, 2022, Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0035457 filed on March 17, 2023, and Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0172124 filed on December 1, 2023, the disclosures of which are incorporated herein by reference in their entirety. Background Art
[0003] Types of secondary batteries include lithium-ion batteries, lithium polymer batteries, nickel-cadmium batteries, nickel-metal hydride batteries, and nickel-zinc batteries. The operating voltage of these unit secondary battery cells (i.e., unit battery cells) is generally 2.5V to 4.2V. Therefore, if a higher output voltage is required, multiple battery cells are connected in series to form a battery pack. In addition, depending on the charge and discharge capacity required for the battery pack, multiple battery cells can be connected in parallel to form a battery pack. Therefore, the number of battery cells included in the battery pack can vary according to the required output voltage or charge and discharge capacity.
[0004] For example, when a battery pack is configured by connecting a plurality of battery cells in series / parallel, a battery module made of the plurality of battery cells is first configured.
[0005] Figure 1 An example of a battery module of the prior art is shown, and Figure 1 is a perspective view of a battery cell assembly 10 having a soft-pack type battery cell 30 exposed to the outside. Specifically, Figure 1 The battery cell assembly 10 shown in FIG. 1 is combined with a bus bar frame 50 having electrode leads led out from both sides and covering the electrode leads of the front and rear portions of a plurality of battery cells 30 stacked in one direction.
[0006] like Figure 1 The illustrated form has an advantage of being lighter in weight than a related art battery module that surrounds and seals the battery cells 30 with a structure that omits a module frame that surrounds and protects the internal battery cells 30 .
[0007] Figure 2are perspective and front views of a related art battery cell assembly 10 having side beams 40 coupled to both sides to support the sides of a battery cell block 20, and Figure 3 Shows Figure 2 The shape of the side beam 40 combined with both sides.
[0008] Figure 2 The battery cell assembly 10 of (a) is characterized in that a side beam 40 is used to improve the side support of the battery cell assembly 10. Figure 2 As shown in (b), the upper and lower portions of the pair of side beams 40 are respectively formed with protrusions 41, wherein the protrusions 41 are formed with steps to have an interlocking shape.
[0009] When the battery cell assemblies 10 having the side beams as described above are accommodated in a battery pack, the side beams provided on the sides of the respective battery cell assemblies 10 are engaged and combined with each other.
[0010] Figure 3 A pair of battery cell assemblies 10 are shown housed in the inner space of a battery pack case 60 included in the battery pack. Figure 3 The illustrated pair of battery cell assemblies 10 disposed adjacent to each other are engaged and coupled to each other by side beams 40 provided at side portions of the respective battery cell assemblies 10 .
[0011] Figure 4 Shows the accommodation Figure 2 The battery pack housing 60 of the battery cell assembly 10 includes a bottom plate 70, a side wall 80, a main wall 90, etc., which respectively support the lower part and the side part of the battery cell assembly 10. Figure 2 The battery pack housing 60 of the battery cell assembly 10 shown has the advantage that the side wall 80 and the main wall 90 are combined with each other to separate the individual battery cell assemblies 10, and no separate partition wall or the like is required to divide the internal space. This is because the side beams provided on the sides of the battery cell assembly 10 can assume the function of the partition wall of the prior art.
[0012] Figure 5 It is a bottom perspective view of a portion of the side member 40 interposed between a pair of battery cell assemblies 10 coupled to each other.
[0013] Figure 2 The illustrated battery cell assemblies 10 may be physically separated from one another within the battery pack housing 60 by the presence of the side rails 40 .
[0014] However, if Figure 5As shown, since the lower end of the side beam 40 is formed flat, a small gap may exist between the lower end of the side beam 40 and the flat bottom plate 70. Such a gap can be used as a passage to easily transfer gas, flame, heat, etc. to other normal battery cell assemblies 10 in the event of thermal runaway of any battery cell assembly 10.
[0015] Figure 6 is a partial cross-sectional view of a battery pack case 60 of the prior art, in which it can be seen that gas, flame, heat, etc. move between a pair of side beams and a bottom plate that are coupled to each other.
[0016] As mentioned above, Figure 2 The illustrated battery cell assembly 10 has a problem in that, when housed in the pack case 60 , high temperature gas, flame, heat, etc. can easily propagate through a small gap.
[0017] In the prior art, various solutions have been studied to solve the problem of applying Figure 2 The problem of gas, flame and heat propagation in a battery pack of the novel battery cell assembly 10 is shown. Summary of the invention

[0090] Battery Pack
[0091] The battery pack of the present disclosure is characterized in that it includes a battery cell assembly 1000 provided with a second side beam 1300 b on one side, and a portion of a lower end portion of the second side beam 1300 b includes a heat insulating material 3000 .
[0092] (First embodiment)
[0093] Fig. 9 is a perspective view of a battery pack according to a first embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0094] like Fig. 9 As shown, the battery pack includes a battery pack case 2000 providing a space for accommodating a plurality of battery cell assemblies 1000 .
[0095] The pack case 2000 includes a bottom plate 2100 supporting the lower portion of the battery cell assembly 1000 , a side wall 2200 coupled along an edge of the bottom plate 2100 to support the side of each battery cell assembly 1000 , and a main wall 2300 crossing the middle of the pack case 2000 and coupled to the bottom plate 2100 .
[0096] The main wall 2300 is formed to extend along the length direction of the pack case 2000 , and is combined with the bottom plate 2100 to divide the inner space of the pack case 2000 into two large partitioned spaces.
[0097] A plurality of battery cell assemblies 1000 are provided at both sides of the main wall 2300, and are seated on the bottom plate 2100. Each of the battery cell assemblies 1000 is provided such that the side beams 1300 provided on the sides are engaged and combined with each other.
[0098] Fig.10 1 is a simplified diagram of the arrangement of the side beams 1300 of a pair of battery cell assemblies 1000 disposed adjacent to each other inside the battery pack case 2000 .
[0099] like Fig.10 As shown, a pair of adjacent battery cell assemblies 1000 are formed so that the first side beam 1300a of one battery cell assembly 1000 and the second side beam 1300b of the other battery cell assembly 1000 are engaged with each other. Specifically, the upper protrusion 1300a1 of the first side beam 1300a provided on one side of the one battery cell assembly 1000 is assembled to the upper part of the lower protrusion 1300b1 of the second side beam 1300b provided on one side of the other battery cell assembly 1000. Therefore, the first side beam 1300a and the second side beam 1300b facing each other can be engaged and combined with each other in the form of the upper protrusion 1300a1 and the lower protrusion 1300b1.
[0100] Fig.11 The bonding of a pair of adjacent battery cell assemblies 1000 is shown.
[0101] like Fig.11 As shown, the first side beam 1300 a and the second side beam 1300 b provided in each battery cell assembly 100 are combined together to form a single partition wall 2400 .
[0102] The partition wall 2400 formed by combining a pair of side beams 1300 may serve to partition an adjacent pair of battery cell blocks 1100 from each other in the inner space of the battery pack case 2000 , and may also serve to support the sides of the respective battery cell blocks 1100 .
[0103] The partition wall 2400 serves to block gas, flame, and heat generated in each battery cell assembly 1000 from being transferred to other battery cell assemblies 1000 .
[0104] The lower end portion of one partition wall 2400 formed by combining the side beam 1300 contains the heat insulating material 3000 .
[0105] Fig.12 2 is a bottom perspective view of a portion of a partition wall 2400 included in a pair of battery cell assemblies 1000 coupled to each other.
[0106] The partition wall 2400 is formed by combining a first side beam 1300 a and a second side beam 1300 b including a heat insulating material 3000 at the lower end thereof.
[0107] In particular, the lower end of the lower protrusion 1300b1 of the second side beam 1300b includes the heat insulating material 3000. Since the lower portion of the partition wall 2400 is mostly occupied by the lower protrusion 1300b1 of the second side beam 1300b, the lower end of the partition wall 2400 is mostly occupied by the heat insulating material 3000 included in the lower end of the second side beam 1300b.
[0108] Fig.13 yes Fig. 9 2 is a cross-sectional view of a limited area of a battery pack case 2000 where a partition wall 2400 is located.
[0109] Reference Fig.13 The partition wall 2400 formed by combining the first side beam 1300a and the second side beam 1300b is interposed between a pair of adjacent battery cell blocks 1100. In addition, the heat insulating material 3000 is interposed between the partition wall 2400 and the bottom plate 2100 supporting the lower portion of the battery cell assembly 1000.
[0110] As described above, the heat insulating material 300 effectively insulates the inner space of the pack case 2000 in which the respective battery cell assemblies 1000 are located by sealing all gaps that may be formed between the partition wall 2400 and the bottom plate 2100 .
[0111] The battery pack disclosed herein is characterized in that when any battery cell assembly 1000 contained therein undergoes thermal runaway and discharges high-temperature gas, flame and heat, the gas, flame and heat are blocked by the partition wall 2400 and the insulating material 3000 arranged at the lower end of the partition wall 2400 to protect other normal battery cell assemblies 1000.
[0112] Fig.14 yes Fig. 9 A cross-sectional view of a portion of battery pack housing 2000 is shown with simplified illustrations of the movement of gases, flames, and heat.
[0113] Reference Fig.14 , gas, flame, and heat from the battery cell assembly 1000 in which thermal runaway has occurred are blocked by the heat insulating material 3000 interposed between the partition wall 24000 and the bottom plate 2100 , and cannot move to other spaces.
[0114] The battery cell assembly 1000 of the present disclosure may be fixed by being screw-coupled to the inner space of the pack case 2000 using a coupling member such as a bolt, etc. Specifically, the partition wall 2400 is screw-coupled to the bottom plate 2100 .
[0115] The battery pack case 2000 may further include a bolt-type coupling member (not shown) for coupling the partition wall 2400 and the bottom plate 2100 to each other, and the coupling member may be threadedly coupled to the bottom plate 2100 by vertically penetrating the partition wall 2400 and the heat insulating material 3000 coated on the lower end portion of the partition wall 2400. In this case, the coupling member is threadedly coupled to the bottom plate 2100 by vertically penetrating the partition wall 24000 and the heat insulating material 3000 coated on the lower end portion of the partition wall 2400, so that the heat insulating material 3000 may also be stably fixed to the partition wall 2400 and the bottom plate 2100 by the coupling member.
[0116] The coupling member is screwed to the bottom plate 2100 by simultaneously penetrating the upper protrusion 1300a1 of the first side beam 1300a and the lower protrusion 1300b1 of the second side beam 1300b, so that the first side beam 1300a and the second side beam 1300b can also be coupled and fixed to each other by the coupling member.
[0117] (Second embodiment)
[0118] The battery pack of the present disclosure may further form a groove at the lower end portion of the partition wall 2400 to more securely attach the heat insulating material 3000 for blocking gas, flame, heat, etc.
[0119] Fig.15 is a bottom perspective view of a portion of a second side beam 1300 b included in the battery pack according to the second embodiment of the present disclosure.
[0120] like Fig.15 As shown, the lower end portion of the second side beam 1300 b includes an insertion groove 1300 b 2 formed to insert the heat insulating material 3000 .
[0121] The insertion groove 1300b2 may be formed to extend along a length direction of the second side beam 1300b.
[0122] The heat insulating material 3000 may be inserted into and attached to the insertion groove 1300 b 2 , or may be coated with the heat insulating material 3000 .
[0123] The heat insulating material 3000 is filled in the entire insertion groove 1300b2 formed to extend along the length direction of the second side beam 1300b.
[0124] Fig.16 2 is a bottom perspective view of a portion of a partition wall 2400 included in a pair of battery cell assemblies 1000 coupled to each other.
[0125] Reference Fig.16 , the insertion groove 1300 b 2 formed at the lower end portion of the partition wall 2400 is filled with the heat insulating material 3000 .
