DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0021] Description of each component

[0022]

[0013] Ventilation member assemblies consistent with the technology disclosed herein may have a variety of different configurations. Figure 1 Depicted is a stereoscopic view of a ventilation member assembly consistent with the technology disclosed herein. The ventilation member assembly 100 generally has a ventilation member housing 110, which is defined by a first axial end 102 and a second axial end 104. The first axial end 102 includes a mounting structure 120. The second axial end 104 is defined by one or more environmental openings 140. An airflow path 150 extends from the first axial end 102 to the second axial end 104. The airflow path 150 allows fluid communication between the mounting structure 120 and the environmental opening 140. Air can flow to the environment outside the ventilation member housing 110 (the environment will be referred to as "external environment" in this article) or flow in from the environment outside the ventilation member housing 110 via the environmental opening 140. The ventilation member housing 110 can be any suitable material including plastic or metal. In some embodiments, the vent housing 110 can be constructed from one or more materials including, for example, nylon, polyamide, glass-filled polyamide, polybutylene terephthalate, glass-filled polybutylene terephthalate, high density polyethylene, and / or polypropylene.

[0023] Figure 2 A cross-sectional view of a ventilation member assembly 100 in an example implementation is depicted. The mounting structure 120 is configured to be fluidically connected to the interior of an enclosure 200. The enclosure 200 is typically configured to accommodate hydrocarbon liquids such as oil. The enclosure 200 can also be configured to accommodate moving parts such as gears. The enclosure 200 can be used in a variety of applications, such as, for example, transmission systems, transfer cases, gearboxes, power transfer units, axle components, etc. Such applications can be found in particular in industries such as automobiles, manufacturing, energy production, etc. Those skilled in the art will recognize the wide applicability of the current technology in various technical fields.

[0024] The enclosure opening 124 is limited by the mounting structure 120. The enclosure opening 124 is usually configured to allow fluid to pass between the enclosure 200 and the ventilation component assembly 100. In the embodiment where the enclosure 200 is subjected to pressure increase relative to the external environment, the ventilation component assembly 100 allows excess air to escape from the enclosure. The ventilation component assembly 100 can advantageously balance the pressure of the enclosure relative to the external environment. In the current example, the enclosure opening 124 is connected to the enclosure 200 using a connecting pipe 190.

[0025] The connecting tube 190 is generally configured to attach the vent assembly 100 to the enclosure 200. In various embodiments, the connecting tube 190 is made of rubber. In an embodiment, the connecting tube 190 frictionally engages the mounting structure 120 of the vent assembly 100 and the connecting portion 202 of the enclosure 200. In the current embodiment, the mounting structure 120 defines a threaded coupling 122 that engages with the connecting tube 190. The connecting portion 202 and the connecting tube 190 can be engaged by surface friction and / or by physical elements such as couplings or other protruding pieces that are threadedly connected to each other.

[0026] Other methods can be used to connect the ventilation member assembly 100 to the enclosure 200, as will be understood. The ventilation member assembly 100 can be directly connected to the enclosure 200 in a sealable manner by the following methods: for example, by snap fit, by bayonet connector, by one or more screws and by welding. In many implementations, an O-ring is used to connect the ventilation member assembly 100 to the enclosure 200 in a sealable manner. The O-ring can be positioned between the mounting structure 120 and the connecting portion 202. In some embodiments, the O-ring is positioned between the mounting structure 120 and the connecting tube 190. In some embodiments, the O-ring contacts the mounting structure 120 to form an airtight seal. In some embodiments, the mounting structure 120 of the ventilation member assembly can be configured to directly receive an opening defined in the enclosure. In such an embodiment, the O-ring can be configured to be arranged between the mounting structure 120 and the enclosure in a compressible and sealed manner.

[0027] The vent assembly 100 is generally configured to prevent contaminants from traveling from the second axial end 104 to the first axial end 102. In an embodiment, the vent assembly 100 is generally configured to ventilate the enclosure 200 to which the vent assembly 100 is installed while preventing dust, fluids and other contaminants from entering the enclosure 200 from the external environment. In some embodiments, the vent assembly 100 is designed to achieve an IP69K protection rating, meaning that, after installation, the vent assembly 100 protects the enclosure 200 from close-range, high-pressure, high-temperature spray. The vent assembly 100 is generally configured to coalesce oil droplets and discharge the coalesced oil toward the first axial end 102 and through the enclosure opening 124. The vent assembly 100 is configured to discharge the coalesced oil back into the enclosure 200.

[0028] The environmental opening 140 is generally configured to allow fluid communication between the interior of the vent housing 110 and the external environment. There may be any suitable number of environmental openings toward the second axial end 104. In some embodiments, there may be a single environmental opening 140. Figure 2 In the illustrated embodiment, a plurality of environmental openings 140 are arranged circumferentially around the ventilation member housing 110. The environmental openings 140 are positioned toward the second axial end 104 of the ventilation member housing 110. When the environmental openings 140 are arranged circumferentially around the axial sidewall of the ventilation member housing 110, environmental contaminants may be advantageously prevented from entering the airflow path 150 and / or directly contacting the membrane.

[0029] Figure 3 to Figure 4 Also depicted with Figure 1 and Figure 2 A cross-sectional view of a consistent example vent assembly 100 . Figure 3 is with Figure 2 A cross section taken perpendicular to the cross section depicted in. Figure 3 In order to make the features of the ventilation housing clear, the filter medium is omitted. Figure 4 Is with Figure 2 The ventilation member assembly 100 includes a ventilation member housing 110, a filter medium 182, a peripheral support surface 184 and a support bracket 300.

[0030] The ventilation member housing 110 may include an axial sidewall 186 surrounding the airflow path 150. The axial sidewall 186 is generally configured to enclose at least a portion of the airflow path 150. The axial sidewall 186 generally extends in an axial direction. The axial sidewall 186 defines an inner periphery 114 and an outer periphery 116. The axial sidewall 186 may have any suitable wall thickness and axial length. In some embodiments, including the depicted embodiments, the axial sidewall 186 is elongated, which means that the length of the axial sidewall is greater than the width. In some other embodiments, the axial sidewall is not elongated. In some embodiments, the axial sidewall 186 is defined with an annular portion that laterally surrounds the airflow path 150. The term "annular portion" as used herein encompasses cross-sections having circular, oval, polygonal and irregular configurations. In some embodiments, the axial sidewall may have a plurality of axially extending segments that are joined at an axially extending corner portion that cumulatively surrounds the airflow path 150 in a lateral direction.

[0031] The filter medium 182 is arranged in the ventilation member housing 110. The filter medium 182 generally includes a plurality of sheet members axially stacked in the ventilation member housing 110. The filter medium 182 is generally contained in the airflow path 150. In some embodiments, the filter medium 182 is configured to coalesce the oil particles and discharge the oil particles from the airflow path 150 through the enclosure opening 124 to the enclosure 200. This configuration prevents the air-bound oil particles generated in the enclosure 200 from being deposited on the membrane 160, which may otherwise cause the pores in the membrane 160 to be blocked, thereby shortening the life of the ventilation member. The filter medium 182 will be described in more detail below.

[0032] The peripheral support surface 184 is generally configured to support the peripheral area 192 of the filter medium 182. The peripheral support surface 184 is generally positioned toward the first axial end 102 of the ventilation member assembly 100. The peripheral support surface is generally positioned between the first axial end 102 of the ventilation member assembly 100 and the filter medium 182. The peripheral support surface 184 is generally configured to support the filter medium 182 around the airflow path 150. In some embodiments, the ventilation member assembly 100 is configured to be oriented so that: the first axial end 102 is located vertically below the second axial end 104, thereby generating a gravity from the second axial end 104 to the first axial end 102. The peripheral support surface 184 is configured to prevent: the filter medium 182 from translating relative to the ventilation member housing, for example, in response to gravity, the filter medium 182 translates relative to the ventilation member housing. In some embodiments, the entire peripheral area of the filter medium is supported by the peripheral support surface 184. In some other embodiments, such as the depicted embodiment, a portion of the peripheral region 192 of the filter media is not supported by the peripheral support surface 184. The portion of the peripheral region 192 of the filter media may be unsupported or may be supported by a support bracket 300, which will now be described.

[0033] Figure 2 A cross-sectional view of the supporting bracket 300 is shown in FIG. Figure 3 The lateral side of the support bracket 300 is shown in the figure. The support bracket 300 is generally configured to structurally support the filter medium 182 to maintain the desired configuration of the filter medium 182. The support bracket 300 is generally configured to cross the airflow path 150. However, the support bracket 300 is generally configured to accommodate the flow of fluid along the airflow path 150. The support bracket 300 includes a gap 316 in the lateral direction to accommodate the fluid flow. This gap 316 defines a portion of the axial length of the airflow path 150. The support bracket 300 is generally positioned toward the first axial end 102 of the ventilation component assembly 100.

[0034] The support bracket 300 has a lateral support surface 310. The lateral support surface 310 is generally configured to provide structural support to the filter medium 182 across the airflow path 150. The lateral support surface 310 is generally offset in the axial direction relative to at least a portion of the peripheral support surface 184, which is Figure 2 and Figure 3184. The lateral support surface 310 generally faces the filter medium 182. In other words, the lateral support surface 310 and the filter medium 182 are axially aligned, and the lateral support surface 310 of the support bracket 300 is oriented toward the filter medium 182. In various embodiments, the filter medium 182 is in direct contact with the lateral support surface 310. In the example shown, the lateral support surface 310 is completely offset relative to the peripheral support surface 184, meaning that the entire lateral support surface 310 is in a different axial plane than any portion of the peripheral support surface 184.

[0035] In some other embodiments, at least a portion of the lateral support surface 310 can be in the same axial plane as at least a portion of the peripheral support surface 184. In the current example, the lateral support surface 310 is axially positioned between the peripheral support surface 184 and the second axial end 104. In some other embodiments, the lateral support surface 310 is axially positioned between the peripheral support surface 184 and the first axial end 102, which will be referred to below. Figure 5 Give a description.

[0036] The support bracket 300 has a first end 312 and a second end 314, both of which are connected to the axial side wall 186. This configuration can be particularly useful in Figure 3 . Although the ends 312, 315 of the support bracket 300 are both connected to the axial side wall, the support bracket 300 is generally not connected to the axial side wall 186 at any other point or does not contact the axial side wall 186 at any other point. In other words, the lateral length portion of the support bracket 300 between the first end 312 and the second end 314 is spaced apart from the axial side wall 186. The space between the support bracket 300 and the axial side wall defines a gap 316 through which air can flow. Most of the lateral length portion of the support bracket 300 is positioned within the inner periphery of the ventilation member housing. In this way, the support bracket 300 extends laterally across the airflow path 150 without obstructing fluid communication along the airflow path 150. In an embodiment, the support bracket 300 is an integral component combined with the ventilation member housing 110. The support bracket 300 may be formed as a component of the vent housing 110 , or the support bracket 300 may be attached to the axial side wall 186 of the vent housing 110 after each is formed.

[0037] The support bracket 300 may be formed of the same material as the vent housing 110, examples of which are listed above. Alternatively, the support bracket 300 may be formed of a material different from the vent housing 110. In various embodiments, each of the vent housing 110 and the support bracket is composed of one or more materials selected to resist degradation of the enclosure by fluids (e.g., hydrocarbon fluids, organic solvents).

[0038] In the current example, the support bracket 300 is depicted as including two linear rod-shaped members that extend in parallel in the transverse direction across the vent housing 110. However, the support bracket 300 may include any suitable number of rod-shaped members. In other embodiments, the support bracket 300 may include only one rod-shaped member, or may include more than two rod-shaped members, depending on the situation. In embodiments where there are multiple rod-shaped members, the multiple rod-shaped members may be parallel or non-parallel. Figure 4 In the figure, the support bracket is depicted as being perpendicular to the axial direction, but it is also appropriate for the support bracket to be non-perpendicular to the axial direction and non-parallel to the axial direction. For example, the first end 312 of the support bracket 300 can be in contact with the axial side wall 186 of the ventilation housing 110, at a first axial distance from the enclosure opening 124, and extend laterally across the airflow path 150, and the second end 314 of the support bracket can be in contact with the axial side wall 186, at a second distance from the enclosure opening 124, wherein the second distance is greater than the first distance. Other configurations are certainly possible.

[0039] The support bracket 300 can have any suitable transverse cross-sectional shape (in a cross section perpendicular to the length of the rod-like member) and size. The transverse support surface can be non-planar, such as circular. Non-planar transverse support surfaces can advantageously reduce contact with the filter media compared to planar support surfaces. This can advantageously increase the amount of media surface area available for fluid flow. Figure 2 , each rod-shaped member of the support bracket 300 is depicted as having a cross-sectional shape similar to a rhombus with a rounded top, wherein the flat end of the rhombus is oriented toward the first axial end 102. Other cross-sectional shapes may be suitable for each rod-shaped member of the support bracket 300, including circular, rectangular, triangular or other polygonal shapes.

[0040] The support bracket 300 can completely extend across the radial extent of the ventilation housing 110, such as Figure 2As shown. Alternatively, the support bracket 300 may partially extend across the radial extent of the vent housing 110. In an embodiment, a first end 312 of a rod-shaped member of the support bracket 300 contacts the axial sidewall 186, and a second end 314 of the rod-shaped member is not attached to the axial sidewall 186, but is positioned within the airflow path 150. In some embodiments, the support bracket 300 may include more than one rod-shaped member, wherein two of the rod-shaped members are axially aligned and attached to opposite sides of the axial sidewall 186.

[0041] The lateral support surface 310 of the support bracket 300 is generally configured to structurally support the filter media 182. The lateral support surface 310 of the support bracket 300 is generally offset in the axial direction relative to the peripheral support surface 184. The bottommost layer of the filter media is configured to contact both the peripheral support surface 184 and the lateral support surface 310. This contact generally causes the filter media to "bump", resulting in a non-planar surface of the filter media.

[0042] In some embodiments, the lateral support surface 310 is offset relative to the entire peripheral support surface 184. In some other embodiments, the lateral support surface 310 is axially offset relative to only a portion of the peripheral support surface 184. The lateral support surface 310 can be offset between the peripheral support surface 184 and the first axial end 102, or the lateral support surface 310 can be offset between the peripheral support surface 184 and the second axial end 104. In embodiments where the lateral support surface 310 is offset between the peripheral support surface 184 and the first axial end 102, the filter medium 182 can be convex relative to the first axial end 102. In embodiments where the lateral support surface 310 is offset between the peripheral support surface 184 and the second axial end 104, the filter medium 182 can be concave relative to the first axial end 102. The convex or concave orientation of the filter medium 182 may affect how the fluid from the enclosure 202 coalesces and returns to the enclosure 202.

[0043] The filter media 182 is generally configured to coalesce fluid. The filter media 182 is generally disposed transversely across the airflow path 150. The filter media 182 has a peripheral region 192 supported by a peripheral support surface 184 surrounding the airflow path 150. The filter media 182 has a central region 188 supported by a transverse support surface 310. The axial position of the central region 188 is offset relative to the axial position of at least a portion of the peripheral region 192, thereby resulting in a non-planar configuration of the filter media 182.

[0044] In some embodiments, the filter media 182 is a coalescing filter media. The coalescing filter media is not an adsorbent for oil. In various embodiments, the coalescing filter media is oleophobic in nature, which can prevent oil from wicking against gravity toward the second axial end 104 by reducing capillary action. According to AATCC specification 118-2013 and ISO14419, the coalescing filter media can have an oleophobicity of at least about 6.5. In one embodiment, the coalescing filter media has an oleophobicity of at least about 7, and more particularly, the coalescing filter media has an oleophobicity of about 7.5.

[0045] The filter media 182 can include any suitable materials and material combinations. For example, the filter media 182 can include bicomponent fibers. The bicomponent fibers can be composed of two different polyesters. In some embodiments, the coalescing filter media can have glass fibers. In at least one embodiment, the glass fibers are microfibers. Typically, the coalescing filter media is substantially devoid of binder material, wherein the term "binder material" is defined herein to exclude fibers in the filter media 182, such as bicomponent fibers or other fibers. Details regarding the materials used to coalesce the filter media 182 will be described in more detail below.

[0046] The coalescing filter media 182 may be a stack of multiple synthetic filter media layers. Most of the layers may be stacked such that each flow face of each filter media layer is in direct contact with the flow face of an adjacent filter media layer. The term "flow face" is used to refer to each surface of the filter media that is configured to face the direction of airflow through the airflow path 150.

[0047] Each of the sheet-like elements of the filter medium 182 has two opposite flow faces, which have shapes such as circular or elliptical. In some embodiments, the sheet-like elements of the filter medium 182 can have other shapes, such as polygonal. In some embodiments, the transverse dimension of the filter medium 182 is greater than the transverse dimension of the airflow path 150 at the axial position of the sheet-like element of the filter medium along the airflow path 150, and the transverse dimension is, for example, a diameter or a diagonal length. Relative to the configuration in which the transverse dimension of the filter medium 182 is equal to the transverse dimension of the corresponding position of the airflow path 150, this configuration can advantageously increase the total filter medium surface area available in the airflow path 150. In other words, in the embodiment in which the transverse dimension of the filter medium 182 is greater than the transverse dimension of the airflow path 150, the filter medium 182 is generally not completely flat, but curved or tent-shaped. Compared to the case when a flat filter medium 182 is used, when a tent-shaped filter medium 182 is used, the total surface area of the filter medium 182 in the airflow path 150 can be larger. Increasing the total surface area of the filter media may improve fluid coalescing and / or fluid flow capabilities.

[0048] As used herein, a "layer" of filter media refers to an arrangement having two opposing flow faces extending transversely across an airflow path and a thickness defined between the flow faces. A "sheet" of filter media may refer to a single formed layer of filter media. Alternatively, a sheet of filter media may be folded to create two or more layers of filter media.

[0049] In an embodiment, each filter media layer can be formed as a separate sheet. For example, a filter media sheet of an appropriate shape can be cut from a larger media sheet to form each filter media layer. Then, multiple separate sheets can be stacked. Additionally or alternatively, the multiple filter media layers can be formed from a single folded filter media sheet.

[0050] As used herein, a "stack" of filter media refers to a plurality of filter media layers arranged in an axial direction. The plurality of filter media layers may have substantially the same lateral position and may be arranged one above the other.

[0051] In various embodiments, a majority of the layers of stacked filter media 182 are substantially unbonded to adjacent stacked filter media layers. "Majority" means at least 50%, at least 60%, or at least 80% of the filter media layers in the stack. The term "substantially unbonded" is used to indicate that at least 90%, 95%, or 97% of the surface area of the filter media layers are unbonded. In some such embodiments, each layer of the layers of stacked filter media 182 is substantially unbonded to adjacent filter media layers. However, in some other embodiments, at least a portion of the layers of stacked filter media 182 are bonded to adjacent filter media layers. In an example embodiment, a portion of the layers of stacked filter media 182 are thermally bonded to adjacent filter media layers.

[0052] Coalescing filter media consistent with the technology disclosed herein is typically wet-laid media. The wet-laid media can be constructed in accordance with, for example, U.S. Patent No. 10,717,031, issued on July 21, 2020, which is incorporated herein by reference. The wet-laid media is formed into sheets by a wet-laid process, formed into discs, and then inserted into the vent housing 110 of the vent assembly 100. Typically, as described above, the wet-laid media discs are stacked in multiple layers in the vent housing 110 to allow the coalesced oil to be discharged in a gravity-assisted manner. In various embodiments, the filter media is a synthetic filter media.

[0053] In some embodiments, at least a portion of the filter media layers have a cross-sectional dimension that is larger than the cross-sectional dimension of the airflow path 150 at a corresponding axial location of the airflow path 150. This generally results in the filter media having a flow face area that is larger than the corresponding cross-sectional area of the airflow path 150. This configuration can prevent air from flowing through the airflow path 150 without passing through at least a portion of the plurality of filter media layers.

[0054] In various embodiments, the stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182 has a number of filter media layers sufficient to achieve the target total particle filtration efficiency of the ventilation component assembly 100. In some embodiments, the stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182 has at least 2, 10, 25, 50, 60, or 70 filter media layers. In one embodiment, the ventilation component assembly 100 has about 90 filter media layers. Typically, the total depth of the layers of the filter media 182 will be about 0.5 inches (12.7 mm) or greater. In an embodiment, the total depth of the layers of the filter media 182 is about 1.8 inches (45.7 mm), depending on the desired total particle filtration efficiency.

[0055] The stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182 is also typically configured to provide particle filtration. In various embodiments, the stack of filter media 182 has an elongated structure, meaning that the length of the stack of filter media 182 is greater than the width. Such an elongated structure can improve particle filtration by increasing the total particle filtration efficiency of the stack of filter media 182 relative to the individual layers of filter media 182. The stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182 can have a total particle filtration efficiency of at least 90%, at least 95%, and / or at least 99%, wherein "total particle filtration efficiency" is used herein to define the particle filtration efficiency of the stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182.

[0056] In various embodiments, the stack of layers of the plurality of filter media 182 may also have at least one secondary layer of coalesced filter media. The at least one secondary layer of coalesced filter media may have a different particle filtration efficiency than the remaining layers in the coalesced filter media layer. In embodiments, due to the risk of contamination of the coalesced filter media when in contact with oil from the enclosure 200, it is desirable to position the at least one secondary layer of filter media away from the enclosure 200. In one embodiment, the at least one secondary layer of coalesced filter media is consistent with the media layers described in U.S. Patent No. 10,717,031, issued on July 21, 2020, which is incorporated herein by reference.

[0057] Back to Figure 4 In the illustrated embodiment, the filter media is arranged to span the airflow path 150 laterally. Each filter media layer has a peripheral region 192 at the periphery of the layer. The peripheral region 192 of the bottom layer of the filter media is directly supported by the peripheral support surface 184. Each filter media layer has a central region 188. The central region 188 of the bottom layer of the filter media is directly supported by the lateral support surface 310 of the support bracket 300. As described herein, the lateral support surface 310 of the support bracket 300 is at least partially axially offset relative to the peripheral support surface 184. Therefore, the bottom layer of the filter media is non-planar, and by extension, each layer of the filter media 182 is non-planar. Figure 4 In the illustrated embodiment, the central region 188 of the filter media is positioned above the peripheral region 192 to form a concave shape relative to the first axial end 102 of the ventilation member assembly 100 .

[0058] In embodiments where the enclosure 200 contains liquid, the liquid may move and splash during operation due to changing fluid dynamics, such as pressure increases, or spatial movement of the enclosure, such as during vehicle operation. It is generally desirable that any fluid within the enclosure contact the filter media 182 as little as possible. When the filter media 182 directly contacts the fluid in the enclosure, such as oil or other liquid, the life and / or effectiveness of the filter media may be reduced.

[0059] like Figure 4 As shown, the housing may include a splash guard 320. The splash guard 320 is typically configured to block splashed liquid in the enclosure 200 from contacting the interior of the ventilation housing. The splash guard 320 may be offset in the axial direction and in the lateral direction relative to the peripheral support surface 184. The splash guard 320 is offset in the axial direction relative to the support bracket 300. The splash guard 320 may be offset between the support bracket 300 and the first axial end 102. In some embodiments, the splash guard 320 and the support bracket 300 together define a tortuous fluid path along the airflow path 150 between the enclosure opening 124 and the filter medium 182. As used herein, a "tortuous fluid path" refers to a path from the first axial end 102 to the filter medium 182 without a direct line of sight.

[0060] exist Figure 4 In the embodiment of the present invention, the splash guard 320 is depicted as a plurality of rod-shaped members that cross the ventilation member housing 110 laterally. The rod-shaped members of the splash guard are depicted as having a transverse cross-sectional shape (in a cross section perpendicular to the length of the rod-shaped members) similar to a rhombus with tapered sides, wherein the flat side of the rhombus is oriented toward the second axial end 104 of the ventilation member assembly 100. The tapered side can be oriented to face the first axial end 102 of the ventilation member assembly 100, which can advantageously cause the liquid to coalesce to form droplets and be discharged through the enclosure opening 124 under the action of gravity. The splash guard 320 can have any suitable number of rod-shaped members, each of which can have any suitable axial cross-sectional shape. Examples of suitable axial cross-sectional shapes include rectangular, circular, and polygonal.

[0061] The splash guard 320 may include more than one rod-shaped member. Alternatively or additionally, the splash guard 320 may be formed in a shape other than a rod-shaped member extending transversely across the vent housing 110. In an embodiment, the splash guard 320 may be formed in a cross, grid, or mesh shape. The splash guard 320 may have any suitable width and height to form a tortuous path between the enclosure 200 and the filter medium 182. In an embodiment, the vent assembly 100 may include more than one splash guard 320. In an embodiment, the splash guard 320 may include multiple layers.

[0062] exist Figure 4 In the illustrated embodiment, the vent cover 130 is coupled to the vent housing 110 and is generally configured to isolate the flow face 162 of the membrane 160 from the environment. The environmental opening 140 defined by the vent housing 110 is generally defined to similarly isolate the flow face 162 of the membrane 160 from the environment. "Isolating" the flow face of the membrane 160 is intended to mean that the relevant features of the vent assembly 100 are configured to prevent external environmental contaminants from directly impacting the flow face of the membrane 160.

[0063] Including Figure 4 In various embodiments, including the illustrated embodiment, the vent assembly 100 has a spacing region portion 170 that is at least partially defined by a media spacer 172. The spacing region portion 170 is generally configured to prevent direct contact between the liquid in the filter medium 182 and the membrane 160. This configuration can advantageously prevent the liquid from blocking the pores of the membrane 160. The media spacer 172 is disposed within the vent housing 110. Typically, the media spacer 172 is axially located between the coalescing filter medium 182 and the membrane 160. The media spacer 172 has a spacer opening 174 that defines a portion of the airflow path 150. Therefore, the spacer opening 174 accommodates fluid flow through the spacer opening 174. In the current embodiment, the media spacer 172 is generally configured to prevent contact between the coalescing filter medium 182 and the membrane 160.

[0064] The membrane 160 is generally configured to act as a barrier to external fluid and dust contamination for the enclosure 200 while allowing air exchange along the airflow path 150 between the first end 102 and the second end 104 of the vent assembly 100. Thus, the membrane 160 is generally disposed across the airflow path 150. In various embodiments, the membrane 160 is coupled to the membrane receiving surface 112 defined by the vent housing 110, wherein the membrane 160 is disposed between the first end 102 and the second end 104 of the vent assembly 100. Figure 4 The film receiving surface 112 can be partially seen in FIG. In one embodiment, the film 160 is pleated. Pleating the film 160 can increase airflow.

[0065] Various types of materials are suitable for use as membrane 160. Typically, membrane 160 is a microporous material, wherein the term "microporous" is intended to mean that the material defines pores having an average pore size between about 0.001 microns and about 5.0 microns. Membrane 160 typically has a solidity of less than about 50% and a porosity of greater than about 50%. In many embodiments, membrane 160 has a plurality of nodes interconnected by fibrils. In many embodiments, membrane 160 is an expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) membrane. As other examples, membrane 160 may also be made of polyamide, polyethylene terephthalate, acrylic acid, polyethersulfone and / or polyethylene. Membrane 160 may have the following physical properties: a water inlet pressure (WEP) of at least 5 psi and a Frazier permeability greater than 0.275 ft / min at 0.5 inches of H2O (0.01807 psi).

[0066] In some embodiments, the film 160 is a laminate. For example, the film 160 can be Tetratex from Donaldson Company, Inc. located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. TM A grade membrane is laminated to a nonwoven nylon support layer, such as that available from Cerex Advances Fabrics, Inc., Cantonment, Fla. In such an example, the membrane has a WEP of about 9 psi and a Frazier permeability of about 1.8 ft / min at 0.5 in. H2O (0.01807 psi).

[0067] In many embodiments, the film 160 is oleophobic. The film 160 can be oleophobic treated. In a specific embodiment, the film 160 has an oleophobicity rating of 6, 7, or 8 based on AATCC specification 118-1992 and ISO 14419.

The second axial end 504 has an environmental opening 540, which is configured to be in fluid communication with an external environment. The ventilation member assembly 500 has an enclosure opening 524 toward the first axial end 502, and the enclosure opening 524 is configured to be in fluid communication with the inside of the enclosure. The ventilation member assembly 500 has a peripheral support surface 584 around the airflow path and a support bracket 590 extending across the airflow path. The support bracket 590 has a lateral support surface 592. The ventilation member assembly also includes a filter medium 582 arranged to laterally cross the airflow path, wherein the filter medium 582 has a peripheral area 596 in contact with the peripheral support surface around the airflow path. The central region 588 of the filter medium 582 contacts the lateral support surface 592 of the support bracket 590 .

[0069] exist Figure 5 In the example shown in FIG. 5 , the lateral support surface 592 of the support bracket 590 is positioned between the peripheral support surface 584 and the first axial end 502. In this configuration, the lateral support surface 592 of the support bracket 590 is in contact with the filter medium 582. The filter medium 582 is non-planar and forms a convex shape relative to the first end 502. The splash guard 594 is offset in the axial direction relative to the peripheral support surface 584 and is positioned between the first axial end 502 and the peripheral support surface 584.

[0070] Figure 5 The example shown in FIG. 5 includes a membrane 560 and a dielectric spacer 572. The membrane 560 and the dielectric spacer 572 are consistent with the membranes and dielectric spacers described herein.

[0071] Description of the method

[0072] Figure 6 is a flow chart depicting a method consistent with the technology disclosed herein. Method 600 is generally consistent with manufacturing a vent assembly consistent with the vent assembly embodiments described above.

[0073] A vent housing is formed 610. Layers of coalescing filter media are stacked in the housing 620. Media spacers are inserted into the housing 630. Membranes are coupled to the housing 640. Covers are coupled to the housing 650.

[0074] The ventilation member housing is typically formed 610 to have a first axial end and a second axial end, wherein the axial sidewall of the ventilation member housing extends between the first axial end and the second axial end. The airflow path extends from the first axial end toward the second axial end. The ventilation member housing can be formed 610 in accordance with the method generally understood in the art. In one embodiment, the ventilation member housing is formed 610 by an injection molding process. In another embodiment, the ventilation member housing is formed 610 by blow molding. The ventilation member housing can be formed 610 by a variety of materials and material combinations. In one embodiment, the ventilation member housing is formed 610 by one or more of the following: nylon, polyamide, glass-filled polyamide, polybutylene terephthalate, glass-filled polybutylene terephthalate, high-density polyethylene and / or polypropylene.

[0075] The ventilation member housing is formed with a supporting bracket that extends laterally across the airflow path. The supporting bracket can be formed simultaneously with the ventilation member housing, or the supporting bracket can be formed separately and attached to the ventilation member housing. The material suitable for the splash guard is consistent with the material of the splash guard described herein.

[0083] In some embodiments, the method further comprises: coupling a membrane to the ventilation member housing and between the filter medium and the second axial end of the ventilation member housing. The membrane is generally configured to prevent particles from contacting the filter medium. Membranes suitable for this purpose are described in more detail herein.

[0084] In some embodiments, the method further comprises: inserting the spacer region into the ventilation housing. The spacer region generally comprises a media spacer. The media spacer can be positioned toward the second axial end of the ventilation housing, for example, the media spacer can be positioned between the filter medium and the membrane.

[0085] In some embodiments, the method further includes coupling a cover to the vent housing. As described herein, the cover can advantageously prevent particles from contacting a membrane or filter media of a vent assembly.
