Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of milling tools. More specifically, the present disclosure relates to a tool holder having a movable coolant tube. Background Art

[0002] Material removal operations generate heat at the interface between the tool and the workpiece. Generally, it is advantageous to provide coolant near this interface to prevent the tool and workpiece from overheating. There are various systems and devices for addressing overheating, and include flooding systems, injection systems, and delivering coolant directly via the tool itself. However, each of these methods has disadvantages. For example, flooding systems require large amounts of coolant to operate and do not limit the application of coolant near the interface between the tool and the workpiece. In addition, while injection systems and delivering coolant via the tool itself provide more accurate coolant delivery, these methods do not provide any adjustment to the delivery angle during use, such as when the revolutions per minute (rpm) of the tool holder increases.

[0003] Therefore, there is a need for a new and useful tool stand with removable coolant tubes. Summary of the invention

[0004] Various example tool racks having removable coolant tubes are described.

[0005] An example tool holder has a tool body and a coolant tube. The tool body is rotatable about a central axis and has a tool body first end, a tool body second end, a coolant channel, a tool body passage, and a chamber. The coolant channel extends through a portion of the tool body. The tool body passage is defined on the tool body second end. The chamber extends from the tool body passage to the coolant channel. The coolant tube is attached to the tool body. The coolant tube is placed in the chamber and partially placed in the tool body passage. The coolant tube has a coolant tube first end, a coolant tube second end, a coolant tube first opening, a coolant tube second opening, a coolant tube passage, and a coolant tube portion. The coolant tube first opening is in fluid communication with the coolant channel. The coolant tube passage extends from the coolant tube first opening to the coolant tube second opening. The coolant tube portion extends from the coolant tube second end toward the coolant tube first end. The coolant tube can move between a static position and a deflected position. In the static position, the coolant tube portion is placed at a first distance from the central axis. In the deflected position, the coolant tube portion is disposed at a second distance from the central axis, the second distance being different from the first distance.

[0026] The following detailed description and accompanying drawings describe and illustrate various exemplary embodiments of a tool rack with a movable coolant tube. The description and illustration of these examples are provided to enable a person skilled in the art to make and use a tool rack with a movable coolant tube according to the present invention. They are not intended to limit the scope of the claims in any way.

[0027] Figures 1 to 7 A first example tool holder 10 is shown having a plurality of coolant tubes 12. The tool holder 10 has a tool body 14 and the plurality of coolant tubes 12.

[0028] The tool body 14 is rotatable about a central axis 15 and has a tool body first end 16, a tool body second end 18, a tool body sidewall 20, a central passage 22, a coolant passage 24, a plurality of tool body passages 26, a cavity 28, a plurality of protrusions 30, a first cover 32 and a second cover 34.

[0029] The central passage 22 extends from the tool body first end 16 to the tool body second end 18. In the illustrated embodiment, the tool body 14 defines a shoulder 36 within the central passage 22, which can serve as a mechanical stop for advancing the tool during use. However, in alternative embodiments, the shoulder can be omitted from the tool body.

[0030] The coolant passage 24 extends through a portion of the tool body 14. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant passage 24 extends from the central passage 22 toward the tool body second end 18 to the cavity 28 and to each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12. Figure 3 and 6 As shown, the coolant passage 24 has a first portion 40, a second portion 42, a third portion 44 and a plurality of connector portions 46. The first portion 40 extends from the central passage 22 to the tool body sidewall 20. The second portion 42 extends from the first portion 40 to the tool body second end 18. The second portion 42 is in fluid communication with the first portion 40. The third portion 44 extends from the second portion 42 and extends around the entire central passage 22. In the embodiment shown, the third portion 44 is an annular portion extending to the connector portion 46. The third portion 44 is in fluid communication with the second portion 42 and the connector portion 46. Each of the plurality of connector portions 46 extends from the third portion 44 to the chamber 28 and to a corresponding coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 12.

[0031] Each of the plurality of tool body passages 26 extends from the tool body second end 18 toward the tool body first end 16 to a cavity 28. Figure 5 , 6 7, a first passage 48 of the plurality of passages 26 extends from the tool body second end 18 toward the tool body first end 16 to the chamber 28. Each of the plurality of tool body passages 26 is sized and configured to receive a portion of a coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 12. In the illustrated embodiment, each of the plurality of tool body passages 26 has a rectangular cross-sectional shape. However, the tool body passages may have any suitable cross-sectional shape, and the selection of a suitable cross-sectional shape may be based on various considerations, such as the cross-sectional shape of the coolant tube to be disposed within the passage.

[0032] Although the tool body 14 has been shown as having a plurality of tool body passages 26, the tool body may include any suitable number of tool body passages. The selection of a suitable number of tool body passages may be based on various considerations, including the number of coolant tubes included in the tool holder. Examples of the number of tool body passages considered suitable for inclusion in the tool holder include one, at least one, two, a plurality, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, more than twelve, and any other number considered suitable for a particular embodiment. In the illustrated embodiment, the tool body 14 has twelve tool body passages 26.

[0033] A cavity 28 extends from each of the plurality of tool body passages 26 toward the tool body first end 16 and toward the coolant passage 24. Figure 3 , 4 , 6 and 7, the chamber 28 extends from a first passage 48 of the plurality of passages 26 toward the tool body first end 16 and toward the coolant passage 24. In the illustrated embodiment, the chamber 28 extends around the entire central passage 22 and extends to the coolant passage 24. When the plurality of coolant tubes 26 are not present, the chamber 28 is in fluid communication with each of the plurality of connector portions 46 and is sized and configured to receive each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12.

[0034] Although the chamber 28 has been shown as having a particular structural arrangement and extending around the entire central passage 22, the chamber may have any suitable structural arrangement and extend around any suitable portion of the central passage. For example, instead of including a chamber extending around the entire central passage, the tool body may include one or more discrete chambers, each of which houses a respective coolant tube and is in fluid communication with one or more coolant passages (e.g., discrete connector portions).

[0035] Each of the plurality of protrusions 30 is disposed in a corresponding passageway of the plurality of tool body passageways 26. Figure 6 and 7 As shown, each of the plurality of protrusions 30 extends into its corresponding passageway in the plurality of tool body passageways 26 and has a first end 52, a second end 54, a first width 53 at the first end 52, and a second width 55 at the second end 54 that is less than the first width 53. Each of the plurality of protrusions 30 provides a structure (e.g., a pivot point) that a coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 12 contacts to guide movement of the coolant tube during use. Although each of the plurality of protrusions 30 has been shown as having a particular structural arrangement, the protrusions included in the tool holder may have any suitable structural arrangement and be positioned at any suitable location. For example, in an alternative embodiment, the protrusions may have a cubic structural arrangement and / or be disposed on the coolant tube and within a passageway defined by the tool body.

[0036] Each of the first cover 32 and the second cover 34 provides a structure for sealing the coolant passage 24. The first cover 32 is disposed within the first portion 40 of the coolant passage 24, and the second cover 34 is disposed within the second portion 42 of the coolant passage 24. Each of the first cover 32 and the second cover 34 can be attached to the tool body 14 using any suitable technique or method, such as using adhesives, welding, threading, or any other technique or method deemed suitable for a particular embodiment. Each of the first cover 32 and the second cover 34 can be formed of any suitable material, such as the material forming the tool body, or any other material deemed suitable for a particular embodiment.

[0037] Each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is disposed within the cavity 28 and within a corresponding tool body passageway of the plurality of tool body passageways 26. In the illustrated embodiment, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is partially disposed within the cavity 28 and partially disposed within a corresponding tool body passageway of the plurality of tool body passageways 26. Figure 6 and 7 As shown, each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 has a coolant tube first end 60, a coolant tube second end 62, a coolant tube first opening 64, a coolant tube second opening 66, a coolant tube passage 68, and a coolant tube portion 70. The coolant tube first opening 64 is defined on the coolant tube first end 60, and the coolant tube second opening 66 is defined on the coolant tube second end 62. The coolant tube first end 60 is in fluid communication with the coolant channel 24 (e.g., the connector portion 46). The coolant tube passage 68 extends from the coolant tube first opening 64 to the coolant tube second opening 66. The coolant tube portion 70 extends from the coolant tube second end 62 toward the coolant tube first end 60. Each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is disposed between a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 30 and the central passage 22. As shown in FIG. Figure 6 As shown, the coolant tube second end 62 and the coolant tube second opening 66 are disposed on an imaginary plane 72 that contains the tool body second end 18 .

[0038] Each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 may be provided in a Figure 6 The static position shown is similar to Figure 7. In the static position, each coolant tube 12 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 70) of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is not in contact with a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 30 and is disposed on a corresponding coolant tube first axis 61. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube first axis 61 is substantially parallel to the center axis 15. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 70 of each coolant tube 12 of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is not in contact with a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 30. In the deflected position, each coolant tube 12 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 70) of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is in contact with a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 30 and is disposed on a corresponding coolant tube second axis 63 different from the coolant tube first axis 61. Figure 3 As shown, the coolant tube second axis 63 is disposed at an angle 65 relative to the central axis 15 and intersects the central axis 15 at a position 84 disposed in an environment 85 outside the central passage 22. In the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 70 of each coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 12 contacts a corresponding protrusion in the plurality of protrusions 30. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 70 is disposed a first distance 67 from the central axis 15, and in the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 70 is disposed a second distance 69 from the central axis 15 that is different from the first distance 67. In the illustrated embodiment, the second distance 69 is greater than the first distance 67.

[0039] The coolant tubes may have any suitable structural arrangement, and the selection of a suitable structural arrangement may be based on various considerations, including the intended use of the tool rack of which the coolant tubes are a component. Figure 6 and 7As shown, each coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 12 has a first straight portion 74, a first curved portion 76, a second straight portion 78, a second curved portion 80, and a third straight portion 82. The first straight portion 74 extends from the coolant tube first end 60 to the first curved portion 76. The first curved portion 76 extends from the first straight portion 74 to the second straight portion 78. The second straight portion 78 extends from the first curved portion 76 to the second curved portion 80. The second curved portion 80 extends from the second straight portion 78 to the third straight portion 82. The third straight portion 82 extends from the second curved portion 80 to the coolant tube second end 62. The coolant tube portion 70 includes a portion of the third straight portion 82. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube first end 60, the coolant tube second end 62, the first straight portion 74, the first curved portion 76, the second straight portion 78, the second curved portion 80, and the third straight portion 82 of each coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 12 are disposed on respective imaginary planes containing the central axis 15. However, in alternative embodiments, the straight portions and / or curved portions may be disposed on any suitable hypothetical plane that may contain the central axis, intersect the central axis, not contact the central axis, or be disposed at an angle relative to the central axis.

[0040] As the tool holder 10 rotates around the central axis 15, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 can move between a stationary position and a deflected position. For example, when the tool holder 10 is in a stationary position and is not rotating around the central axis 15, no centripetal force is applied to any of the plurality of coolant tubes 12. However, during use, and as the tool holder 10 rotates around the central axis 15, a centripetal force is applied to each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12, which causes each coolant tube to elastically deform and shift. As the tool holder 10 rotates around the central axis 15, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 radially deforms outward and away from the central axis 15, and such radial deformation and shift will increase as the rpm of the tool holder 10 increases. Therefore, the tool holder 10 provides a mechanism for directing the fluid traveling through each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 toward the workpiece and / or the center of rotation, and changing the flow direction as the tool holder rpm increases. The overall length, center of mass, thickness, and rigidity of the coolant tubes contained in the tool holder may be adjusted to achieve a specific angular deflection at a specific rpm during use. For example, the coolant tube may have a variable thickness along its length to allow for a desired deflection during use (e.g., a thicker cross section in a curved portion (e.g., curved portion 76) to increase deflection during use).

[0041] Although a plurality of coolant tubes having a particular structural arrangement have been shown, the tool holder may include any suitable number of coolant tubes having any suitable structural arrangement. The selection of a suitable number of coolant tubes and the structural arrangement of the coolant tubes may be based on various considerations, including the intended use of the tool holder of which the coolant tubes are components. Examples of the number of coolant tubes that are considered suitable for inclusion in the tool holder include one, at least one, two, multiple, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, twelve, more than twelve, and any other number that is considered suitable for a particular embodiment. In the illustrated embodiment, the plurality of coolant tubes 12 include twelve coolant tubes. Examples of structural arrangements that are considered suitable for coolant tubes include structural arrangements with any suitable number of straight and / or curved portions and / or with any suitable cross-sectional shape. For example, one of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 may omit the first straight portion so that the first curved portion is directly attached to the tool body 14. In an embodiment, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 12 is shown to have the same cross-sectional shape, which is a rectangular cross-sectional shape. However, in alternative embodiments, a first portion of the plurality of coolant tubes may have a first cross-sectional shape, and a second portion of the plurality of coolant tubes may have a second cross-sectional shape different from the first cross-sectional shape.

[0042] The tool body and each coolant tube contained in the tool holder can be formed of any suitable material and manufactured using any suitable technical method. The selection of suitable materials and techniques or methods to manufacture the tool holder can be based on various considerations, including the intended use of the tool holder of which the tool body and coolant tubes are components. Examples of materials that are considered suitable for forming the tool holder include metals, alloys, and any other materials that are considered suitable for a specific embodiment. Examples of techniques and methods that are considered suitable for manufacturing the tool holder include casting, 3D printing, and any other techniques or methods that are considered suitable for a specific embodiment. In the illustrated embodiment, using 3D printing, the tool body 14 and the plurality of coolant tubes 12 are formed of the same material and are formed as a single continuous piece of metal material.

[0043] The features of the tool holders described herein (e.g., tool bodies, coolant tubes) can be incorporated into any suitable tool holder, and the selection of an appropriate tool holder to include the features described herein can be based on a variety of considerations, including the type of workpiece being shaped. Examples of tool holders considered suitable for incorporating the features described herein include shrink fit tool holders, hydraulic chucks, milling chucks, add-on rings, and any other tool holders considered suitable for a particular embodiment.

[0044] Fig. 8A , 8B9A and 9B show a second example tool rack 110 having a coolant tube 112. The tool rack 110 is similar to the Figures 1 to 7 The tool holder 10 shown and described above. The tool holder 110 has a tool body 114 and a coolant tube 112.

[0045] In the illustrated embodiment, the tool body 114 and the coolant tube 112 are formed of different materials and are formed as separate pieces of material that are attached to each other. Fig. 8A and 9A As shown, the tool body 114 has a first portion 117 attached to a second portion 119. In addition, the tool body 114 has a shoulder 130 disposed within the cavity 128.

[0046] The coolant passage 124 extends through a portion of the tool body 114. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant passage 124 extends from the central passage 122 toward the tool body second end 118, toward the chamber 128, and to the coolant tube 112. The coolant passage 124 has a first portion 140, a second portion 142, a third portion 144, and a connector portion 146. The first portion 140 extends from the central passage 122 toward the tool body sidewall 120 and extends to the second portion 142. The second portion 142 extends from the first portion 140 toward the tool body second end 118 and extends to the third portion 144. The second portion 142 is in fluid communication with the first portion 140 and the third portion 144. The third portion 144 extends from the second portion 142 and extends around the entire central passage 122. The third portion 144 is in fluid communication with the second portion 142 and the connector portion 146. The connector portion 146 extends from the third portion 144 to the chamber 128. When the coolant tube 112 is not present, the connector portion 146 is in fluid communication with the third portion 144 and the chamber 128 .

[0047] The tool body passage 126 extends from the tool body second end 118 toward the tool body first end 116 to the chamber 128. The tool body passage 126 is sized and configured to receive a portion of the coolant tube 112. In the illustrated embodiment, the tool body 114 has one tool body passage 126. The chamber 128 extends from the tool body passage 126 toward the tool body first end 116, toward the central axis 115, and toward the coolant passage 124. The chamber 128 is sized and configured to receive the coolant tube 112. A shoulder 130 is disposed in the chamber 128 and provides a structure (e.g., a pivot point) that the coolant tube 112 contacts during use to guide movement of the coolant tube.

[0048] The coolant tube 112 is disposed within the cavity 128 and within the tool body passage 126. In the illustrated embodiment, the tool holder 110 includes a coolant tube 112 that is partially disposed within the cavity 128 and partially disposed within the tool body passage 126. The coolant tube 112 has a coolant tube first end 160 attached to the tool body 114, a coolant tube second end 162, a coolant tube first opening 164, a coolant tube second opening 166, a coolant tube passage 168, and a coolant tube portion 170. The coolant tube portion 170 extends from the coolant tube second end 162 toward the coolant tube first end 160. The coolant tube first opening 164 is in fluid communication with the coolant passage 124. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube first opening 164 is in fluid communication with the connector portion 146. The coolant tube 112 is disposed between the shoulder 130 and the central passage 122. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube second end 162 and the coolant tube second opening 166 are disposed on an imaginary plane 172 disposed between the tool body second end 118 and the tool body first end 116. Thus, the coolant tube second end 162 and the coolant tube second opening 166 are each disposed between the tool body first end 116 and the tool body second end 118.

[0049] The coolant pipe 112 may be Fig. 8A The static position shown is similar to Fig.9A In the static position, the coolant tube 112 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 170) is not in contact with the shoulder 130 and is disposed on the coolant tube first axis 161. Figure 8B As shown, the coolant tube first axis 161 is disposed at a first angle 163 relative to the central axis 115 and intersects the central axis 115 at a first position 184 disposed in an environment 185 outside the central passage 122. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 170 does not contact the shoulder 130. In the deflected position, the coolant tube 112 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 170) contacts the shoulder 130 and is disposed on a coolant tube second axis 165 that is different from the coolant tube first axis 161. Fig. 9BAs shown, the coolant tube second axis 165 is disposed at a second angle 167 relative to the central axis 115 that is greater than the first angle 163, and intersects the central axis 115 at a second location 186. The second location 186 is disposed in an environment 185 outside the central passage 122 and is positioned between the first location 184 and the tool body second end 118. In the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 170 contacts the shoulder 130. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 170 is disposed a first distance 169 from the central axis 115, and in the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 170 is disposed a second distance 171 from the central axis 115 that is different from the first distance 169. In the illustrated embodiment, the second distance 171 is greater than the first distance 169.

[0050] like Fig. 8A and 9A As shown, the coolant tube 112 has a first straight portion 174, a first curved portion 176, and a second straight portion 178. The first straight portion 174 extends from the coolant tube first end 160 to the first curved portion 176. The first curved portion 176 extends from the first straight portion 174 to the second straight portion 178. The second straight portion 178 extends from the first curved portion 176 to the coolant tube second end 162. The coolant tube portion 170 includes the second straight portion 178. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube first end 160, the coolant tube second end 162, the first straight portion 174, the first curved portion 176, and the second straight portion 178 are disposed on an imaginary plane containing the central axis 115.

[0051] As the tool holder 110 rotates about the central axis 115, the coolant tube 112 can move between a stationary position and a deflected position. For example, when the tool holder 110 is in a stationary position and is not rotating about the central axis 115, no centripetal force is applied to the coolant tube 112. However, during use, and as the tool holder 110 rotates about the central axis 115, a centripetal force is applied to the coolant tube 112, which elastically deforms and shifts. As the tool holder 110 rotates about the central axis 115, the coolant tube 112 radially deforms outward and away from the central axis 115, and this radial deformation and displacement will increase as the rpm of the tool holder 110 increases. Therefore, the tool holder 110 provides a mechanism for directing the fluid traveling through the coolant tube 112 toward the workpiece and / or the center of rotation, and changing the flow direction as the rpm of the tool holder 110 increases.

[0052] Fig.10 , 11 , 12, 13, 14A and 14B show a third example tool rack 210 having a plurality of coolant tubes 212. The tool rack 210 is similar to Figures 1 to 7The tool holder 10 shown and described above. The tool holder 210 has a tool body 214 and the plurality of coolant tubes 212.

[0056] The cavity 228 extends from each of the plurality of tool body passages 226 toward the tool body first end 216 and toward the third portion 244 of the plurality of coolant passages 224. Fig.10 , 1114A, the chamber 228 extends from a first passage 248 of the plurality of passages 226 toward the tool body first end 216 and toward the plurality of coolant passages 224. The chamber 228 is sized and configured to receive each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212.

[0057] Each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 is disposed within the cavity 228 and within a corresponding tool body passageway of the plurality of tool body passageways 226. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube second end 262 and the coolant tube second opening 266 are disposed on a hypothetical plane 272 disposed in an environment 285 outside of the central passage 222 .

[0058] Each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 may be provided in a Fig.10 and 12 The static position shown is similar to Fig.11 , 13 and moves between the deflected positions shown in 14A. In the static position, each coolant tube 212 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 270) of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 contacts a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 230 and is disposed on a corresponding coolant tube first axis 261. In the illustrated embodiment, the coolant tube first axis 261 is substantially parallel to the center axis 215. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 270 of each coolant tube 212 of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 contacts a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 230. In the deflected position, each coolant tube 212 (e.g., the coolant tube portion 270) of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 contacts a corresponding protrusion of the plurality of protrusions 230 and is disposed on a corresponding coolant tube second axis 263 that is different from the coolant tube first axis 261. Fig. 14BAs shown, the coolant tube second axis 263 is disposed at an angle 265 relative to the central axis 215 and intersects the central axis 215 at a position 284 disposed in an environment 285 outside the central passage 222. In the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 270 of each coolant tube in the plurality of coolant tubes 212 contacts a corresponding protrusion in the plurality of protrusions 230. In the static position, the coolant tube portion 270 is disposed a first distance 267 from the central axis 215, and in the deflected position, the coolant tube portion 270 is disposed a second distance 269 from the central axis 215 that is different from the first distance 267. The second distance 269 is greater than the first distance 267.

[0059] like Fig.10 , 11 , 12, 13 and 14A, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 has a circular cross-sectional shape, a first straight portion 274, a first curved portion 276, a second straight portion 278, a second curved portion 280 and a third straight portion 282. The first straight portion 274 extends from the coolant tube first end 260 to the first curved portion 276. The first curved portion 276 extends from the first straight portion 274 to the second straight portion 278. The second straight portion 278 extends from the first curved portion 276 to the second curved portion 280. The second curved portion 280 extends from the second straight portion 278 to the third straight portion 282. [0060] As the tool holder 210 rotates around the central axis 215, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 can move between a stationary position and a deflected position. For example, when the tool holder 210 is in a stationary position and is not rotating around the central axis 215, no centripetal force is applied to any of the plurality of coolant tubes 212. However, during use, and as the tool holder 210 rotates around the central axis 215, a centripetal force is applied to each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212, which causes each coolant tube to elastically deform and shift. As the tool holder 210 rotates around the central axis 215, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 radially deforms outward and away from the central axis 215, and such radial deformation and shift will increase as the rpm of the tool holder 210 increases. Therefore, the tool holder 210 provides a mechanism for directing the fluid traveling through each of the plurality of coolant tubes 212 toward the workpiece and / or the center of rotation, and changing the flow direction as the tool holder rpm increases.

The second portion 342 is in fluid communication with the first portion 340 and is an annular portion extending to each coolant tube passage 368.

[0064] The chamber 328 extends from each of the plurality of tool body passages 326 toward the tool body first end 316 and toward the central passage 322. In the illustrated embodiment, the chamber 328 extends around the entire central passage 322 and toward the coolant passage 324. The chamber 328 is sized and configured to receive each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312.

[0065] Each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 is disposed within the cavity 328 and within a corresponding tool body passage of the plurality of tool body passages 326. In the illustrated embodiment, each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 is partially disposed within the cavity 328 and partially disposed within a corresponding tool body passage of the plurality of tool body passages 326. The coolant tube portion 370 extends from the coolant tube second end 362 toward the coolant tube first end 360. The coolant tube first opening 364 is in fluid communication with the coolant passage 324. The coolant tube first opening 364 is in fluid communication with the second portion 342 of the coolant passage 324. Each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 is positioned between the shoulder 330 and the central passage 322 .

[0066] Each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 may be provided in a Fig.15 The device moves between the rest position and the deflected position shown. Fig.15 and 16 As shown, each coolant tube of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 has a first straight portion 374, a first curved portion 376, and a second straight portion 378. The first straight portion 374 extends from the coolant tube first end 360 to the first curved portion 376. [0067] As the tool holder 310 rotates around the central axis 315, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 can move between a stationary position and a deflected position. For example, when the tool holder 310 is in a stationary position and is not rotating around the central axis 315, no centripetal force is applied to any of the plurality of coolant tubes 312. However, during use, and as the tool holder 310 rotates around the central axis 315, a centripetal force is applied to each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312, which causes each coolant tube to elastically deform and shift. As the tool holder 310 rotates around the central axis 315, each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 radially deforms outward and away from the central axis 315, and such radial deformation and shift will increase as the rpm of the tool holder 310 increases. Therefore, the tool holder 310 provides a mechanism for directing the fluid traveling through each of the plurality of coolant tubes 312 toward the workpiece and / or the center of rotation, and changing the flow direction as the tool holder rpm increases.
