Description

Technical Field

[0001] The present invention relates to a wearable protective device comprising an inflatable member. Furthermore, the present invention relates to a method for safely activating the inflatable member of the wearable protective device.

[0002] In particular, the invention relates to a wearable protective device provided with an inflatable member, suitable for use in all fields where effective protection against impacts and / or falls must be obtained. For example, the wearable protective device is suitable for being worn by motorcyclists, cyclists, skiers or during work activities.

[0003] For the sake of clarity, in this description reference will be made in a non-limiting manner to a wearable protective device suitable for being worn by a motorcyclist.

[0004] Typically, the wearable protective device comprises a protective garment, such as a jacket, a suit, a vest, a belt, containing an inflatable member adapted to move from a resting state in which it is in a deflated state to an operative state in which it is in an inflated state.

[0005] The inflatable member is in fluid communication with an inflation device, such as a cylinder, adapted to introduce a predetermined amount of an inflation fluid, such as compressed gas, into the inflatable member in order to inflate and thereby expand the inflatable member.

[0006] The release of inflation fluid may be controlled by a mechanical or electronic system.

[0007] The gas cartridge generally comprises a cylindrical housing having an open first end connected to the inflatable member and, in the case of electronically activated systems, a second end connected to the control unit of the wearable device through a specific connector.

[0008] The connection of the cylinder to the inflatable member may be achieved by clamping the end of the cylinder directly in the opening of the inflatable member. Alternatively, the end of the cylinder may be provided with an external thread adapted to be screwed into a corresponding thread of a cap arranged at the opening of the inflatable member.

[0009] Alternatively, the end of the cylinder may be connected to the inflatable member by a bayonet mounting, wherein a male element is provided at the end of the cylinder and a female receptacle is provided at a cap arranged at the opening of the inflatable member. Background Art

[0010] In known devices, after having been inflated, the inflatable member can be reused if it has not been damaged, such as torn or punctured.

[0011] In contrast, unless the cylinder is provided with more than one inflation charge, it will need to be replaced with a new one after each deployment.

[0012] However, changing a gas cylinder is a potentially dangerous operation if not managed in a proper manner.

[0013] In fact, in order to confer high performance in terms of pressure and deployment time without increasing the size of the cartridge, the cartridge usually comprises an explosive charge.

[0014] In the case of an electronically activated airbag system, the explosive charge is ignited by an electronic pulse from the control unit; in the case of a mechanically activated airbag, the explosive charge pushes a mechanical striker.

[0015] Even if the manufacturer follows standard safety procedures to ensure safe handling of the gas cylinder, there is still the possibility that the electronic or mechanical controls of the gas cylinder may fail or the user may fail to handle the gas cylinder in an appropriate manner during handling and / or changing of the gas cylinder.

[0016] In order to avoid any safety issues for the end user, the replacement of the gas cylinder is currently handled by authorized centers that have specific training to handle the detonation components and ensure the correct connection between the gas cylinder and the inflatable member.

[0017] To replace the cartridge, in the case of an electronically activated system, the electronic connector connected to the control unit needs to be released from the cartridge first and then the end of the cartridge connected to the inflatable member needs to be removed from the inflatable member.

[0018] However, both operations may result in accidental triggering of the detonating charge of the gas cylinder, with high risks to the operator.

[0019] At the same time, even if the cylinder is replaced in a safe manner, the user's protection may be compromised.

[0020] Indeed, if a new cylinder is not correctly secured to the inflatable member, proper inflation of the inflatable member may be prevented, with high risk for the end user.

[0021] In particular, triggering a cylinder that is not coupled or incorrectly coupled to the inflatable member may not only render the use of the inflatable protection device ineffective, but may also be dangerous to the user, as the cylinder or the connection cap may be propelled towards the user's body.

[0022] Another hazard to the user is that, if the cylinder is not coupled or properly connected to the inflatable member, either directly or through a connection cap, the outward flow of inflation gas may cause harm to the user, such as injury or burns.

[0023] In view of the above problems, if the inflatable member is activated during use of the wearable protective device, the wearable protective device must be returned to an authorized center for replacement of the air cartridge.

[0024] However, wearable protective devices are expensive to ship due to the bulk of the garments.

[0025] Furthermore, the user is deprived of the additional protection provided by the inflatable wearable protection device for at least a period of time, typically two or three weeks, unless he / she has ready access to additional inflatable protective garments, the associated costs being not negligible.

[0026] A solution to the above technical problem has been disclosed in WO 202 / 089439 in the name of the same applicant.

[0027] In particular, in WO2021 / 089439, a wearable protective device provided with a safety device is disclosed. Such a safety device is designed to signal an unsafe state of the wearable protective device if the inflation device is detached from the inflatable member or is not properly coupled to the inflatable member.

[0028] In the embodiments disclosed in WO 202 / 089439, the inflation device is designed to be inserted into a retaining seat, which may include a cover suitable for protecting the inflation device.

[0029] The cover may be provided with first fastening means designed to couple with corresponding second fastening means of the holder in order to allow fastening of the cover to the holder.

[0030] The first and second fastening means are designed to mate with each other only when the safety device allows the inflatable device to be inserted into the retaining seat.

[0031] Indeed, if the inflation device in the form of a cylinder cannot be inserted into the retaining seat, the cap cannot be properly fixed to the retaining seat since the inflation device will protrude from the retaining seat.

[0032] The above solution is of great importance because it provides the user with clear and reliable feedback about the connection between the inflation device and the inflatable member, so that an end user without specific training can understand whether the inflation device has been correctly connected to the inflatable member.

[0033] However, the above solution does not prevent the cover from being fastened to the retaining seat if the inflation device or the assembly formed by the inflation device and the cap fastened to the inflatable member is completely omitted, i.e. if the cover is fastened to the retaining seat for any unforeseen reason without having inserted the inflation device into its seat.

[0034] In this case, visual inspection of the wearable protective device may lead to the erroneous conclusion that the inflatable member is capable of being inflated under hazardous conditions, while the inflatable member is actually missing one of the components essential for its proper inflation. Summary of the invention

[0035] It is therefore a primary object of the present invention to provide a wearable protective device having an inflatable member configured to overcome or at least reduce the disadvantages mentioned above with reference to known wearable airbag devices.

[0036] More specifically, a primary object of the present invention is to provide a wearable protective device having an inflatable member configured to allow safe and proper replacement of the cylinder while providing reliable feedback regarding the correct installation of the inflatable device in its seat.

[0037] It is another object of the present invention to provide a wearable protective device having an inflatable member that is configured to not allow activation of the inflatable member if the inflation device is not present or is not properly connected to the inflatable member.

[0038] Finally, it is an object of the present invention to provide a method for safely activating an inflatable member of a wearable protective device.

[0039] These objects and other objects which will better emerge in the following of the present description are achieved by a wearable protective device according to claim 1 and a method according to claim 24 . BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS

[0064] refer to Figure 1 and Figure 2 An example of a wearable protective device according to the present invention is indicated as a whole by reference numeral 10 .

[0065] The wearable protective device 10 may be a garment, such as a jacket or suit, or alternatively may be an undergarment suitable for use in conjunction with outer protective garments.

[0066] In another embodiment, the wearable protective device 10 may be a harness designed to be worn on top of or under another garment.

[0067] Advantageously, the wearable protective device may be a device for protecting the user's body from injuries caused by impacts and falls, especially in the elderly. In this case, the wearable protective device may be a pair of shorts or briefs designed to protect the user's buttocks.

[0068] Alternatively, the wearable protective device may be a protective element, such as a helmet.

[0069] The wearable protective device 10 is preferably designed to be worn by a motorcyclist. However, as will become more apparent from the following description, the wearable protective device 10 may also be advantageously used by cyclists, skiers, workers or in other fields where effective protection of the user's body must be obtained.

[0070] The wearable protective device 10 includes at least one inflatable member 12. The inflatable member 12 is designed to move from its resting state in a deflated state to its operating state in an inflated state. The inflatable member 12 can be inflated with a fluid such as air or gas so as to expand to protect the user of the wearable protective device 10 from impact, falling, or sliding.

[0071] exist Figure 1 and Figure 2 In the illustrated embodiment, the wearable protective device 10 is provided with a single inflatable member 12 .

[0072] Advantageously, such an inflatable member 12 is designed to be arranged over the chest and / or back and / or shoulders and / or sides of the user. Obviously, different arrangements of the inflatable member 12 are possible in order to meet other specific needs. The wearable protective device 10 can be provided with a single inflatable member 12 or multiple inflatable members suitable for covering different parts of the user's body. Preferably, the inflatable member 12 has a bag-like shape.

[0073] like Figure 3 and Figure 4 As schematically shown in FIG. 1 , the wearable protective device 10 further comprises at least one inflation device 14 designed to be coupled to the inflatable member 12 for inflating the inflatable member when the inflation device 14 is triggered.

[0074] Preferably, the inflation device 14 is selected from the group consisting of an explosive inflator, a compressed gas inflator, and a hybrid inflator.

[0075] The inflation device 14 may include multiple inflation volumes. In this case, the inflatable member 12 may be inflated more than once to allow inflation at different time periods.

[0076] In this case, once all inflation charges have been triggered, replacement of the inflation device 14 is necessary.

[0077] As shown in the drawings, the inflation device 14 is preferably in the form of a cylindrical gas cylinder.

[0078] like Figure 3 As shown in FIG. 1 , the inflation device 14 has a connection end 16 designed to be connected to the inflatable member 12. In detail, the connection end 16 is preferably inserted and blocked into the opening 18 of the inflatable member 12 in an airtight manner.

[0079] As known in the art, the connection end 16 of the inflation device 14 may be removably connected to the inflatable member 12 by means of connection means designed to ensure an airtight connection. In the meaning of the present invention, the connection means are considered to be part of the inflation device.

[0080] like Figure 3 and Fig.11 As can be seen in FIG. 1 , such a connection device may include a connection cap 20 designed to be fastened at the opening 18 of the inflatable member 12. Preferably, the cap is fastened in the opening 18 by means of a clamp 22 (see Figure 3 ).

[0081] Alternatively, the connection end 16 of the inflation device 14 may be interlockingly secured to the connection cap 20 .

[0082] Preferably, the connection end 16 of the inflation device 14 may be provided with an external thread, which is suitable for being screwed into a corresponding internal thread provided in the connection cap 20 (see Figure 3 ).

[0083] The inflation device 14 can be triggered by means of an electrical mechanism or a mechanical mechanism.

[0084] In the case of electrical activation, the wearable protective device 10 includes at least one sensor 24 designed to detect a force acting on the wearable protective device 10 .

[0085] The sensor 24 may be applied, for example, to the shoulder of the wearable protective device 10 (see Figure 1 ).

[0086] Sensor 24 may be an accelerometer designed to detect acceleration acting on wearable protective device 10 , or a gyroscope designed to detect movement and orientation of wearable protective device 10 .

[0087] Preferably, the wearable protective device 10 includes a plurality of sensors 24 .

[0088] The wearable protective device 10 may also include a control unit 26 (see Figure 1 ), the control unit is designed to process the data detected by the sensor 24 and to send a trigger signal to the inflation device 14 when a collision situation is recognized.

[0089] A "crash situation" shall refer to a situation in which the wearable protective device 10 experiences sudden acceleration / deceleration and / or sudden changes in its orientation and its angular velocity.

[0090] In particular, when a user of the wearable protective device 10 is on a vehicle such as a motorcycle, sudden acceleration or deceleration experienced by the wearable protective device 10 may identify that the motorcycle has struck an obstacle or that the user has lost control of the motorcycle being thrown from the seat.

[0091] The control unit 26 is designed to process the data received from the sensor 24 at regular time intervals (eg 1 ms) in order to obtain information about the forces acting on the wearable protective device 10 .

[0092] If the control unit 26 detects, based on the algorithms implemented therein, that a collision situation is occurring, a trigger signal is sent from the control unit 26 to the inflation device 14 so that the inflatable member 12 may be inflated.

[0093] In the case of mechanical activation of the inflation device 14, the inflation device may be triggered by using an activation cable or tether that connects, for example, a vehicle such as a motorcycle or a ladder to the wearable protective device 10 if the worker is using the wearable protective device.

[0094] The activation cable has a first end connected to the motorcycle or the ladder and a second end fixed to a triggering device designed to trigger a striker which in turn is configured to activate the inflatable device 14 .

[0095] If separation of the user from the motorcycle or ladder occurs, such as typically caused by a fall and / or impact, the actuation cable or tether triggers the striker via the trigger device, thereby causing deployment of the inflatable device.

[0096] The activation cable can also be activated manually.

[0097] In case of electrical activation of the inflatable member 12 , the inflation device 14 is electrically connected to the control unit 26 .

[0098] In detail, the inflation device 14 is connected to a control unit 26 by means of a cable having an electronic connector 28 at its end (see e.g. Figure 4 and Figure 6 ).

[0099] Alternatively, the inflation device 14 may be connected to the control unit 26 wirelessly.

[0100] like Figure 1 and Figure 2 As shown in , the wearable protective device 10 further includes a housing 30 designed to accommodate the inflation device 14 .

[0101] Advantageously, the housing may house, in addition to the inflation device 14 , the control unit 26 and the sensor 24 of the wearable protective device 10 .

[0102] The housing 30 is preferably box-shaped.

[0103] Advantageously, the housing 30 may include a base portion 32 and a cover portion 34 designed to be fastened to each other (see, e.g. Figure 6 ).

[0104] Preferably, the base portion 32 and the cover portion 34 are fastened to each other by removable fastening means, such as rivets, bolts, snap connectors.

[0105] Advantageously, the base 32 defines a storage cavity 36 . Preferably, said storage cavity 36 is delimited by a peripheral wall 37 of the base 32 .

[0106] The storage cavity 36 can be selectively closed by a cover portion 34, which serves as a cover for the storage cavity.

[0107] In the closed configuration, the housing 30 is in any case provided with an opening allowing the passage of any cables connecting the inflation device 14 to the control unit 26 or to different elements and housing the portion of the inflatable member 12 strictly accessible to the inflation device 14 .

[0108] like Figure 1 As shown in , the housing 30 can be directly applied to the wearable protective device 10. For example, if the wearable protective device 10 is clothing, the housing 30 can be inserted into a pocket 11 provided in the clothing, or can be fastened to the inner or outer surface of the clothing.

[0109] Preferably, the housing 30 is provided at the rear portion of the garment.

[0110] Alternatively, the housing 30 may be applied indirectly to the wearable protective device 10. For example, Figure 2 As shown in FIG. , the housing 30 may be applied to a wearable protective device by being fastened to another protective element 13 of the wearable protective device 10 .

[0111] like Figure 2 As shown in , the wearable protective device 10 may be a vest provided with a back protector 13. In this case, the housing 30 may be fastened to the back protector 13, inserted into a seat provided in the back protector 13.

[0112] According to the invention, the housing 30 comprises a detection device 33 adapted to move between a first configuration and a second configuration. In particular, the insertion of the inflation device 14 into the retaining seat 40 of the housing 30 causes the detection device 33 to move from the first configuration to the second configuration.

[0113] As will become clear from the following description, the detection means 33 are able to detect the presence of the inflation device 14 inside the housing 30 and to provide a reliable feedback to the user regarding this situation.

[0114] In particular, movement of the detection devices 33 from their first configuration to their second configuration will result in a mechanical or electrical output signal notifying the inflation device 14 that it is properly inserted into the housing 30, thereby preparing the inflatable member 12 to be inflated.

[0115] First reference Figures 4 to 19, the detection device 33 may include a spacing device 38. Advantageously, in a first configuration, the spacing device 38 is adapted to keep the base 32 and the cover portion 34 of the housing 30 spaced apart, and in a second configuration, the spacing device 38 is adapted to allow the cover portion 34 to be placed against the base 32.

[0116] In particular, the insertion of the inflation device 14 within its retaining seat 40 causes the spacer device 38 to move from the first configuration to the second configuration.

[0117] Thanks to the provision of the spacing means 38 , the cover part 34 can be fastened to the base 32 of the housing 30 only when the inflation device 14 is correctly inserted into its retaining seat 40 .

[0118] In the event that the inflation device 14 has not been correctly inserted into the retaining seat 40 or the user has forgotten to insert the inflation device 14 into the housing 30, the spacer means 38 are therefore maintained in their first configuration, thereby keeping the base 32 and the cover portion 34 spaced apart so as not to allow mutual fastening of these elements.

[0119] In this way, the user has simple and reliable feedback regarding the fact that the wearable protective device 10 is not in a proper state to allow the inflatable member 12 to inflate.

[0120] Similarly, the spacer 38 can be designed to remain in its first configuration even when the inflation device 14 is not coupled to or improperly coupled to the inflatable member 12 .

[0121] In fact, as will be explained in detail below, the spacing means may also be designed to detect the presence of any connection cap used to connect the inflation device to the inflatable member.

[0122] At the same time, if the inflation device 14 is inserted in its holder 40 in a suitable manner and is properly coupled to the inflatable member 12, the spacer 38 is adapted to move in its second configuration, thereby allowing the cover portion 34 to abut against the peripheral wall 37 of the base 32. In this way, the cover portion 34 is allowed to be fastened to the base 32, so that the user is sure that the inflation device 14 has been correctly inserted into its holder 40 and that the inflatable member 12 of the wearable protective device 10 can be safely activated if necessary.

[0123] In other words, the spacer 38 is capable of detecting the presence of the inflation device 14 and allowing proper closure of the housing 30 only when the inflation device 14 is correctly inserted into its holder 40 and properly coupled to the inflatable member 12 .

[0124] As shown in the figures, a spacer 38 may be disposed between the base portion 32 and the cover portion 34 of the housing 30 .

[0125] Preferably, the spacer 38 is secured to the base 32 so as to be disposed within the storage cavity 36 defined by the base 32 .

[0126] Alternatively, the spacer 38 may be fastened to the cover portion 34 .

[0127] Preferably, the spacer 38 is hingedly connected to the support member 42 of the base 32 (see Fig.12 or Fig.16 The support member 42 may be disposed at the bottom wall of the base 32 .

[0128] Advantageously, according to the first embodiment, the spacing device 38 can rotate about a pivot point 44 of the support member 42. Preferably, said pivot point 44 extends along the longitudinal axis L of the housing 30 (see Fig.12 As shown in the drawings, the longitudinal axis L of the housing 30 extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis W of the inflation device 14.

[0129] In different embodiments not shown in the drawings, the spacer device can be rotated about a pivot point extending along axes arranged in different directions.

[0130] For example Fig.12 As shown in FIG. 4 , the pivot point 44 may include a pin inserted between two shoulders 45 of the support member 42 , the pin 44 engaging a hinge hole 46 provided at a bottom portion of the spacer 38 .

[0131] Preferably, the elastic means 48 are arranged between the support member 42 and the spacer means 38 , such that rotation of the spacer means 38 from the first configuration to the second configuration occurs by overcoming the elastic force exerted by the elastic means 48 .

[0132] In detail, the elastic means 48 may comprise a helical spring having a first end 49 against the base 32 or the support member 42 and a second end 50 against the spacer 38. Preferably, the second end 50 is inserted into a seat 53 arranged at the bottom portion of the spacer 38.

[0133] In particular, the resilient device 48 may be urged against the spacing device 38 with a second end 50 and react against the base 32 or the support member 42 with an opposing first end 49 .

[0134] The provision of the elastic means 48 prevents the spacer means 38 from being inadvertently moved from the first configuration to the second configuration. Similarly, when the inflation device 14 is removed from its retaining seat 40, the elastic means 48 ensure that the spacer means 38 return to their first configuration.

[0135] As shown in the figure, for example Figures 7 to 13In the embodiment, the spacer 38 may include at least one rod 39. Preferably, the rod 39 is L-shaped, having a first arm 52 engageable with the base 32 of the housing 30 and a second arm 54 engageable with the inflation device 14.

[0136] Specifically, the first arm 52 of the L-shaped rod 39 lies on a plane generally parallel to the bottom surface of the base 32 , while the second arm 54 of the L-shaped rod 39 extends in a generally perpendicular direction relative to the bottom surface of the base 32 .

[0137] In the first configuration, the first arm 52 of the lever 39 abuts against a mating portion 56 provided at the bottom surface of the base 32 .

[0138] Advantageously, the matching portion 56 may be arranged at a footing portion of the support member 42 (see Fig.12 ).

[0139] Once the rod 39 is fastened at the support member 42, the matching portion 56 is preferably arranged offset relative to the hinge hole 46 of the rod 39. Advantageously, the matching portion 56 is interposed between the retaining seat 40 and the hinge hole 46.

[0140] In this manner, the mating portion 56 may act as a wedge that allows the rod 39 to rotate in only one direction if a force is applied at the second arm 54 , with the opposite rotation being blocked by the abutment between the mating portion 56 and the first arm 52 .

[0141] Advantageously, due to the mutual positioning between the matching portion 56, the hinge hole 46 and the retaining seat 40, once the rod 39 is in its first configuration, it can only be rotated away from the retaining seat 40 in which the inflation device 14 is inserted.

[0142] exist Figure 8 The rotation of the rod 39 between the first configuration and the second configuration is schematically illustrated in FIG. 5 , wherein the direction of rotation experienced by the rod 39 is indicated by arrow A.

[0143] In particular, in the first configuration, the distal end 58 of the second arm 54 is designed to protrude from the base 32, and in particular, from the storage cavity 36 defined therein, so as to prevent the cover portion 34 from being placed against the base 32 and closing the storage cavity 36 (see, e.g., Fig. 9 ).

[0144] In the second configuration, after the lever 39 is rotated about the pivot point 44, the distal end 58 of the second arm 54 is designed to be retracted into the base 32, in particular into the storage cavity 36 defined therein, so as to allow abutment between the cover portion 34 and the base 32. After such abutment, the cover portion 34 can thus be fastened to the base 32 so as to close the storage cavity 36.

[0145] Alternatively, according to Figures 14 to 19In the embodiment shown in FIG. 4 , the spacer 38 can be coupled to the support member 42 of the base 32 so as to be adapted to translate along the transverse axis T of the housing 30 . Figure 16 to Figure 17 The direction of translation experienced by the spacer 38 is indicated by the letter B in FIG.

[0146] In this embodiment, the spacer 38 preferably includes at least one handle 70 and at least one rod 74 coupled to each other; the at least one rod 74 is slidably inserted between the shoulders 45 of the support member 42. The handle 70 and the rod 74 can be made integrally. Alternatively, the handle 70 can be rigidly coupled to the rod 74.

[0147] For example, in Fig.16 and Fig.17 As shown in FIG. 4 , the handle 70 is preferably arranged perpendicularly relative to the rod 74. The assembly formed by the handle 70 and the rod 74 is T-shaped, and the rod 74 is designed to slidably engage a corresponding hole provided in the shoulder 45 of the support member 42.

[0148] The positive coupling between the rod and the hole of the shoulder 45 is designed to prevent any rotation of the rod about the axis T.

[0149] Similar to previously disclosed embodiments, the resilient means 48 is arranged between the support member 42 and the spacer means 38 , such that translation of the spacer means 38 from the first configuration to the second configuration occurs by overcoming the resilient force exerted by the resilient means 48 .

[0150] In detail, the elastic device 48 may include a coil spring having a first end abutting against the support member 42 , ie, the shoulder 45 of the support member 42 , and a second end abutting against the handle 70 .

[0151] In particular, the resilient means 48 may be urged with a second end against the spacing means 38 , ie the finger grip 70 , and react with an opposite first end 49 against the support member 42 , ie the shoulder 45 of the support member 42 .

[0152] Furthermore, in this case, the provision of the elastic means 48 prevents an unintentional translational movement of the spacing means 38 from the first configuration to the second configuration.

[0153] As shown in the figure, for example Figures 15 to 19 In the embodiment of the present invention, the rod 74 can be engaged with the inflation device 14, and the handle 70 can be engaged with the abutment 72 provided on the inner surface 35 of the cover portion 34. The inner surface 35 is the surface of the cover portion 34 opposite the base 32.

[0154] In particular, the rod 74 lies on a plane that is generally parallel to the bottom surface of the base 32 , while the handle 70 extends in a direction that is generally perpendicular to the bottom surface of the base 32 .

[0155] In the first configuration (see Fig.18 ), the handle 70, in particular the distal end 73 of the handle 70, is designed to abut against the abutment 72 if the cover portion 34 is positioned close to the base 32.

[0156] In particular, the heights of the handle 70 and the abutment 72 are selected to prevent the cover portion 34 from closing the base 32 and, in detail, the storage cavity 36. The contact between the handle 70 and the abutment 72 keeps the base 32 and the cover portion 34 spaced apart so as not to allow mutual fastening of these elements.

[0157] Before moving to the second configuration (see Fig.19 ), the rod 74 translates along the transverse axis T and, if the cover portion 34 is positioned close to the base 32 , this movement causes a corresponding translation of the handle 70 which will no longer be positioned corresponding to the abutment 72 .

[0158] In this manner, the cover portion 34 may be positioned in contact with the base 32, thereby allowing the cover portion 34 to be secured to the base 32 so as to close the storage cavity 36 within which the handles 70 and abutments 72 are also arranged in a staggered configuration.

[0159] Alternatively, if Figure 20 to Figure 24 As shown in , the detection means 33 may comprise one or more detectors 80, 90, 100 designed to detect the presence of the inflation device 14 in its holder 40. The detectors 80, 90, 100 are preferably arranged on the base 32, in close proximity to the holder 40.

[0160] However, the detector may also be arranged on a region of a cover part which is designed to overlap or partially form the holding base 40 .

[0161] Similar to the previously disclosed embodiments, the detectors 80 , 90 , 100 are designed to move from a first configuration to a second configuration once the inflation device 14 is present in the housing 30 , and in particular when the inflation device 14 is inserted in its retaining seat 40 .

[0162] Advantageously, the detector 80, 90, 100 is adapted to generate an electrical signal to another element of the wearable protective device 10 when it moves from the first configuration to the second configuration.

[0163] Movement of the detectors 80, 90, 100 from the first configuration to the second configuration can generate an electrical signal, for example via the connector 84, to the control unit 26 of the wearable protective device 10 or alternatively to an additional signaling device (e.g., visual or acoustic, not shown in the drawings) that can signal to the user that the inflation device 14 is correctly inserted into the housing 30.

[0164] and Figures 3 to 19Unlike the spacer means 38 of the embodiment of the present invention, the detectors 80, 90, 100 cannot prevent the cover part 34 from being fastened to the base part 32 if the inflation device 14 is not inserted into its retaining seat 40. However, the detectors 80, 90, 100 are adapted to provide a clear and reliable feedback to the user about the presence of the inflation device 14 inside the housing 30. In any case, if the inflation device 14 is electrically activated by the control unit 26, the control unit can be programmed to switch to the "on state" if the detector 80, 90, 100 is in its second configuration and the inflation device 14 is therefore inserted into its retaining seat 40. In the "on state", the control unit is able to send a trigger signal to the inflation device 14 in a dangerous situation. When not in the "on state", the control unit cannot send a trigger signal to the inflation device 14.

[0165] refer to Figure 20 to Figure 24 The detector may be a mechanical switch 80 or a proximity sensor 90 or a photoelectric tube sensor 100 .

[0166] However different types of sensors may be used to meet specific needs.

[0167] The mechanical switch 80 may be a limit switch (see Figure 20 to Figure 22 ). Preferably, the limit switch 80 is provided with an actuating arm 82, which is designed to move from a first configuration in which it is in a non-actuated state to a second configuration in which it is in an actuated state. Fig. 22 As schematically shown in FIG. 8 , the arm 82 is actuated by the presence of the inflation device 14 in the retaining seat 40. In particular, the arm 82 is designed to bend once it comes into contact with the outer surface of the inflation device 14.

[0168] Alternatively, if Fig.23 As shown in FIG. 1 , the detector may be a proximity sensor 90. The proximity sensor 90 is capable of detecting the presence of the inflation device 14 in the holder 40 without physically contacting the inflation device 14.

[0169] The proximity sensor 90 is provided with a sensing surface 92 designed to detect the absence or presence of the inflation device 14 in its retaining seat 40 .

[0170] In particular, the proximity sensor is in a first configuration when the sensing surface 92 detects the absence of the inflation device 14, and the proximity sensor is in a second configuration when the sensing surface 92 detects the presence of the inflation device. The presence of the inflation device is detected if the distance between the inflation device and the sensing surface is within the sensing range of the sensing surface.

[0171] The proximity sensor 90 may be of optical, laser or ultrasonic type.

[0172] refer to Fig.24, the detector may be a pair of photoelectric tube sensors 100. Preferably, the photoelectric tube sensors 100 are positioned on opposite sides relative to the holder 40 of the inflation device 14.

[0173] One photocell sensor 100 is provided with a transmitting surface 102 , and one photocell sensor 100 is provided with a receiving surface 104 .

[0174] Furthermore, the photocell sensor 100 is able to detect the presence of the inflation device 14 in the retaining seat 40 without physically contacting the inflation device 14 .

[0175] In particular, the photoelectric sensor 100 is in a first configuration when the emission and receiving surfaces 102, 104 detect the absence of the inflation device 14, and in a second configuration when the emission and receiving surfaces 102, 104 detect the presence of the inflation device. The presence of the inflation device is detected if the inflation device 14 is located between the emission and receiving surfaces 102, 104, i.e. between the sensor 100. In fact, in this case, the light emitted from the emission surface 102 and blocked by the inflation device 14 does not reach the receiving surface 104.

[0176] As previously mentioned, the detection means 33 are designed to move to their second configuration only when the inflation means 14 is properly housed in its retaining seat 40 arranged in the housing 30 .

[0177] The retaining seat 40 of the inflation device 14 is arranged at the base 32 of the housing 30 in the preferred embodiment.

[0178] Preferably, the retaining seat 40 is defined by one or more abutment surfaces 60 defining a seat complementary in shape to the inflation device 14 .

[0179] The retaining seat 40 may also be defined by one or more recesses provided in the base or cover portion.

[0180] Advantageously, the abutment surface 60 may protrude from the base 32 of the housing 30 and be designed to securely fasten the inflation device 14 once the inflation device is inserted into the housing.

[0181] Advantageously, the retaining seat 40 is designed to also house connection means by which the inflation device is coupled to the inflatable member.

[0182] In particular, the holder 40 can be designed to accommodate the inflation device 14 and the connecting cap 20 (see Fig.11 and Fig.15). In particular, the abutment surface 60 may be arranged along the base 32 of the housing 30 so as to define a profile complementary to the assembly formed by the inflation device 14 and the connection cap 20. In this way, if the inflation device 14 is fastened to the inflatable member 12 by the connection cap 20, the inflation device 14 can be inserted into its retaining seat 40 only if the connection between the inflation device 14 and the connection cap 20 has been properly performed. Otherwise, the inflation device 14 and / or the connection cap 20 will at least partially protrude from the base 32, in particular from the storage cavity 36.

[0183] As previously mentioned, the movement of the detection device 38 from its first configuration to its second configuration is designed to occur when the inflation device 14 is inserted into its retaining seat 40 .

[0184] Similarly, if the inflation device comprises connection means for connecting to the inflatable member, the movement of the detection means from its first configuration to its second configuration is designed to occur when the inflation device 14 with the connection means is inserted into its retaining seat 40 .

[0185] In fact, reference Figures 3 to 19 In an embodiment of the present invention, the spacer 38 is arranged near the retaining seat 40, so that the spacer 38 is designed to contact the inflation device 14 when the inflation device is inserted into its retaining seat 40.

[0186] In particular, in the case where the spacing means comprise at least one L-shaped lever 39 , the second arm 54 of the lever 39 is designed to come into contact with the inflation means 14 .

[0187] In detail, the contact between the inflation device 14 and the spacing device 38 is essentially designed to implement a cam and follower mechanism.

[0188] In particular, when the inflation device 14 is inserted into its retaining seat 40, it comes into contact with the second arm 54 of the lever 39. The outer surface of the inflation device 14 acts as a cam and the second arm 54 acts as a follower.

[0189] Due to the force exerted by the inflation device 14 on the lever 39, the second arm 54 is pushed away from the inflation device 14 so that its distal end 58 can be retracted into the base.

[0190] In particular, the lever 39 can be rotated about its pivot point 44 in a direction not blocked by the mating portion 56. The lever 39 can thus reach the second configuration and allow the cover portion 34 to be properly fastened to the base 32.

[0191] Once the inflation device 14 is removed from its retaining seat 40 , the lever 39 can be moved back to its first configuration due to the force exerted by elastic means 48 arranged between the support member 42 and the lever 39 .

[0192] The provision of the mating portion 56 ensures that the lever 39 is not allowed to move to a different configuration that would allow the cover portion 34 to abut the base 32 if the cover is pushed against the base without inserting an inflation device into its retaining seat.

[0193] In fact, in this case, the handle 70 remains blocked in its first configuration by keeping the base and cover parts of the housing spaced apart.

[0194] In the case where the spacer device 38 comprises at least one handle 70 and at least one rod 74 , the rod 74 is designed to be in contact with the inflation device 14 .

[0195] In detail, moreover, in this case, the contact between the inflation device 14 and the spacing device 38 is substantially designed to implement a cam and follower mechanism.

[0196] In particular, when the inflation device 14 is inserted into its holder 40, it comes into contact with the rod 74. The outer surface of the inflation device 14 acts as a cam, and the rod 74 acts as a follower.

[0197] Due to the force exerted by the inflation device 14 on the rod 74 , if the cover portion 34 is applied to the base 32 , the handle 70 may be translated along the T axis so as not to be positioned in correspondence with the abutment 72 .

[0198] In particular, the assembly formed by the handle 70 and the rod 74 can thus reach the second configuration and allow the cover portion 34 to be properly fastened to the base 32 .

[0199] Once the inflation device 14 is removed from its retaining seat 40 , the handle 70 and the rod 74 may be moved back to their first configuration due to the force exerted by the elastic means 48 arranged between the support member 42 and the handle 70 .

[0200] The provision of the shoulder 45 of the support member 42 ensures that the handle 70 remains correctly positioned at the support member 42. Furthermore, the shape coupling between the rod and the hole provided in the shoulder of the support member ensures that no rotation or different movement of the handle 70 is allowed if the cover is pushed against the base without inserting the inflation device into its retaining seat.

[0201] In fact, also in this case, the lever 39 remains blocked in its first configuration by keeping the base and cover parts of the housing spaced apart.

[0202] As described, detectors 80, 90, 100 are designed to detect the presence of inflation device 14 in its holder, thereby providing different feedback relative to spacing device 38. In particular, detectors 80, 90, 100 are designed to provide direct feedback not related to the mutual fastening of the cover portion to the base.

[0203] As previously mentioned, the feedback of the detector 80, 90, 100 may be used to directly switch on the control unit or to provide a visual or acoustic signal whenever the detector is in its second configuration.

[0204] Preferably, the wearable protective device 10 may include a plurality of detection devices 33 spaced apart from each other. Advantageously, the plurality of detection devices 33 may include detection devices of different types. Figure 8 As shown in , the detection device 33 may include two levers 39 positioned along the sides of the holder. Fig.14 and Fig.15 As shown in FIG. 8 , the lever 39 may be used in combination with an assembly formed by a handle 70 and a rod 74 .

[0205] Where the housing 30 includes two or more spacers 38 , the spacers 38 in the plurality may be arranged to be rotatable along a single longitudinal axis L or translatable along a single transverse axis T.

[0206] Alternatively, the spacer devices 38 may be arranged to be staggered along the longitudinal axis L or along the transverse axis T in order to better cooperate with the inflation device 14 .

[0207] In case the inflation device 14 is secured to the inflatable member 12 by means of the connecting cap 20, a plurality of spacer means 38 are provided, e.g. Figure 8 The two L-shaped levers 39 shown in FIG. 1 are particularly useful.

[0208] In fact, in this case, the provision of a second L-shaped lever 39 spaced apart from the first L-shaped lever ensures greater safety. The first lever 39A can control the presence of the inflation device 14, while the second lever 39B can control the presence of the connection cap 20 (see for example Fig.11 ).

[0209] like Fig.10 , in the case where only the inflation device 14 is correctly inserted into the retaining seat 40, resulting in the first lever 39A being moved in its second configuration, closing of the housing 30 will in any case be prevented by the presence of the second lever 39B, which remains in its first configuration due to the absence of the connecting cap 20.

[0210] Similarly, in the event that only the connection cap 20 is properly inserted into the retaining seat 40, causing the second lever 39B to move in its second configuration, closing of the housing 30 will in any case be prevented by the presence of the first lever 39A, which is in its first configuration due to the absence of the inflator 14.

[0211] Similarly, refer to Fig.14 and Fig.15In the embodiment of the present invention, the lever 39 can be used to detect the presence of the inflation device 14, and the assembly formed by the handle 70 and the rod 74 can be used to detect the presence of the connecting cap 20.

[0212] The lever 39 and the assembly formed by the handle 70 and the rod 74 are in the second configuration allowing the housing 30 to be closed only if both elements are properly housed in the retaining seat 40 .

[0213] Advantageously, the provision of the spacing means 38 may be combined with the sensing means 62, 64 arranged on the opposing surfaces of the base portion 32 and the cover portion 34 (see Fig.13 ).

[0214] The sensing means 62, 64, such as a magnet 62 designed to cooperate with a proximity sensor 64, may advantageously signal when the cover part 34 is positioned close to the base 32, close meaning that the cover part 34 is at a distance less than 1 cm from the base.

[0215] According to previous disclosure, such a signal can only be emitted when the spacer 38 is in its second configuration.

[0216] In this way, if the inflatable member 12 of the wearable protective device 10 is electrically activated, the signals emitted by the sensing devices 62, 64 can be used to arm the system in order to switch the control unit 26 to an "on state" where the control unit 26 can trigger the inflatable device 14 when needed.

[0217] Similarly, if the inflatable member 12 of the wearable protective device 10 is mechanically activated, the sensing devices 62, 64 may be designed to emit a visual or acoustic signal suitable for signaling to the user that the inflatable member 12 is suitably inflated when desired.

[0218] As stated, the present invention is also directed to a method for safely activating an inflatable member 12 of a wearable protective device 10 .

[0219] The method comprises the following steps:

[0220] -Providing a wearable protective device 10, comprising:

[0221] i) at least one inflatable member 12 adapted to move between a rest state, in which it is in a deflated state, and an operative state, in which it is in an inflated state;

[0222] ii) at least one inflation device 14 designed to be coupled to said at least one inflatable member 12 for inflating said at least one inflatable member 12 once said inflation device is triggered;

[0223] iii) a housing 30 designed to accommodate the at least one inflation device 14;

[0224] - Checking whether the at least one inflation device 14 and the inflatable member 12 are correctly coupled;

[0225] - preventing the triggering of at least one inflation device 14 if an incorrect coupling between the at least one inflation device 14 and the inflatable member 12 has been detected;

[0226] It is characterized in that

[0227] The checking step is performed by means of a detection device 33 which is arranged in the housing 30 and is designed to detect the presence of at least one inflation device inside the housing 30 .

[0228] Preferably, if the wearable protective device 10 comprises a control unit 26, the detection means 33 are suitable for directly or indirectly signaling to the control unit 26 the presence of at least one inflatable device inside the housing, the control unit being designed to process the data detected by the sensor 24 and to send a trigger signal to the inflatable device 14 when a dangerous situation is identified.

[0229] Advantageously, the presence of at least one inflation device can be signaled indirectly to the control unit 26 by the detection means 33, through sensing means 62, 64 arranged between the base 32 and the cover part 34 of the housing 30, said sensing means 62, 64 being capable of cooperating with the detection means 33. In this case, the detection means 33 comprise spacing means 38 capable of keeping the base 32 and the cover part 34 spaced apart if an inflation device is not inserted into the housing 30.

[0230] Alternatively, the presence of at least one inflation device may be signaled directly to the control unit 26 by the detection means 33 ; the detection means 33 comprises detectors 80 , 90 , 100 adapted to detect the presence of an inflation device inside the housing and to send a corresponding feedback to the control unit 26 .

[0231] At this point, it is clear how to utilize the wearable protective device 10 and method according to the present invention to achieve the intended purpose.

[0232] The detection means 33 ensure that inflation of the inflatable bag can only take place when the inflation device is properly inserted into its housing and when it is properly coupled to the inflation device.

[0233] If the detection device 33 comprises Figures 2 to 19 If the spacer 38 shown in FIG. 1 is provided, the spacer ensures that the cover portion 34 and the base portion 32 of the housing 30 of the inflation device 14 can only be secured when the inflation device 14 is correctly inserted into the housing 30 .

[0234] If the inflation device 14 is missed or incorrectly inserted into its holder 40 , the spacer 38 cannot move in its second configuration and therefore the base 32 and the cover portion 34 are spaced apart, preventing possible fastening of the cover portion 34 to the base 32 .

[0235] In this way, the user is further helped during the exchange of the inflation device, thereby ensuring him reliable and immediate feedback on the result of the exchange.

[0236] Reliable feedback is also provided if the detection means 33 comprises a detector 80, 90, 100 which is able to directly detect whether an inflation device is present in the housing.
