[0035] This document describes a retainer for attaching a covering material to a frame or structure. Although the retainer described below is discussed as attaching a covering material to a seat back frame, the retainer is in no way limited thereto. Rather, embodiments of the retainer described herein can be used to attach a covering material to various frames or structures as needed. Thus, as used herein, "frame" can refer to various structures and is not intended to limit the frames illustrated herein. Rather, the frame can be any structure, such as but not limited to various rigid structures, formed plates, molded disks, rigid backings, extruded beams, tubes, formed profiles, combinations thereof, and various other structures to which a covering material can be attached. Additionally, although the drawings illustrate a seat back frame, the retainer can be attached to other seat parts, such as but not limited to a seat cushion, and in other examples, the retainer can be used in other non-seat applications to attach a covering material to a structure.

[0036] The retainer described herein generally includes a fixing portion for supporting an edge of a covering material, a first engaging feature, and a second engaging feature. In certain embodiments, the retainer described herein can allow for tool-free installation, which means that no separate tool such as a hammer (as conventionally required) is needed or required to assemble the retainer to the seat back frame. Compared with traditional methods, this tool-free installation can have reduced assembly time and can provide increased safety for an operator (e.g., because the risk of injury from a separate tool is eliminated). The retainer described herein can be assembled by hand and can be ergonomically friendly, which can increase production efficiency compared with traditional methods.

[0037] In certain embodiments, the retainer described herein optionally can allow the retainer and the covering material to be supported on the seat back frame in an intermediate or temporary holding configuration in which the retainer is partially engaged with the seat back frame. The temporary holding configuration can support the weight of the covering material while allowing the retainer to be aligned along the length of the seat back frame, which can allow for easier assembly of the retainer with the seat back frame. As a non-limiting example, an operator can position the retainer in the temporary holding configuration along the length of the seat back frame to ensure a desired positioning and / or alignment before subsequently moving the retainer to a fully engaged position.

[0038] In certain embodiments, the retainer described herein optionally can be moved from the temporary holding configuration to a fully engaged configuration by rotating the retainer, which can improve the ability of the retainer to be inserted into the seat back frame. Optionally, compared with traditional methods, rotating the retainer from the temporary holding configuration to the fully engaged configuration can allow the retainer to be inserted into the seat back frame with a smaller insertion force. Additionally, or alternatively, the retainer described herein can include an elastically deformable portion that can allow the retainer to be inserted into the seat back frame with a small insertion force.

[0039] The retainers described herein can have an improved engagement with the seat back frame in a fully engaged configuration, which can provide a more secure connection between the retainer and the seat back frame and / or can provide an improved (e.g., uniform) appearance. As a non-limiting example, the retainers described herein can minimize rattling between the retainer and the seat back frame by clamping a portion of the seat back frame and / or by contacting at least two different portions of the seat back frame.

[0040] Various other benefits and advantages can be achieved with the systems and methods provided herein, and the foregoing advantages should not be considered restrictive.

[0041] Figure 1 An example of a structure with a cover material 104 is illustrated. In the illustrated embodiment, the structure is a seat 100 with a seat back 102. As mentioned, in other embodiments, the cover material 104 can be attached to other structures as needed.

[0042] The seat 100 can include one or more cover materials 104, and one or more edges of at least one of the cover materials 104 can be connected to the frame of the seat back 102 in a seam region 106 using one or more retainers (discussed in detail below) (see, for example, Figure 2 and Figure 3 the seat back frame 208 illustrated in). As needed, the cover material 104 connected to the frame via one or more retainers can be various cover materials and / or combinations of cover materials and should not be considered restrictive. In the illustrated embodiment, the seat 100 includes two cover materials 104A to 104B, where the cover material 104A is attached to the seat back frame using one or more retainers. Figure 1 The particular seat 100 shown in should not be considered restrictive, and the cover material 104 can form part of a seat of a moving body such as a vehicle, an airplane, a train, a ship, etc., form part of furniture, and / or form part of other substrate materials as needed.

[0043] Figures 2 to 6C A portion of the seam region 206 of a seat 200 according to an embodiment is illustrated. The seat 200 is similar to the seat 100 and includes cover materials 204A to 204B, where the cover material 204A is attached to the seat back frame 208 of the seat 200 using one or more retainers 218. In Figures 2 to 6CIn this case, the retainer 218 is directly joined to the seat back frame 208 to connect the covering material 204A to the seat back frame 208. However, in other embodiments, the retainer 218 may join a bracket positioned within the seat back frame 208 (see, for example, Figures 11A to 11B , Figures 12A to 12D and Figure 14 ).

[0044] As Figure 2 and Figure 3 shown, for example, the seat back frame 208 defines a channel 210. As discussed in detail below, the retainer 218 may be inserted into the channel 210 for joining the seat back frame 208 and connecting the covering material 204 to the seat back frame 208. Optionally, one or more protrusions 212 may extend into the channel 210. When the protrusions 212 are included, the protrusions 212 may extend from the first channel wall 214 and / or the second channel wall 216. In the embodiment of Figures 2 to 6C , at least one protrusion 212 extends from the first channel wall 214.

[0045] Referring to Figure 4 and Figure 5 , the retainer 218 generally includes a fixing portion 220, a first engaging feature 232, and a second engaging feature 234. In certain embodiments, the retainer 218 is a single-piece or integrally formed component, although this need not be the case in other embodiments. The retainer 218 may be constructed from various suitable materials and by various suitable forming techniques as needed. As a non-limiting example, the retainer 218 may be formed by extrusion molding, injection molding, and / or other suitable techniques or combinations of techniques as needed. Optionally, at least a portion of the retainer 218 (e.g., the first engaging feature 232) is an elastically deformable material such that the portion of the retainer 218 can be selectively deformed or compressed during assembly with the seat back frame 208.

[0046] The fixing portion 220 optionally includes an end 226 of the retainer 218. As Figure 4 and Figure 5 shown, for example, the fixing portion 220 includes a surface 228 to which the sheet edge of the covering material 204A can be fixed via various suitable mechanisms or techniques. As a non-limiting example, the covering material 204A can be stitched to the surface 228. The fixing portion 220 can have various shapes or profiles as needed. Optionally, and as Figure 5 shown, the fixing portion 220 can include a forming feature such as, but not limited to, a notch 230 such that the shape of the fixing portion 220 can be adjusted as needed. In the embodiment of Figures 2 to 6C , the notch 230 as a forming feature allows the fixing portion 220 to be unbent from a configuration (see, for example Figure 4and Figure 5 ) bent to a bent configuration (see, for example Figure 2 , Figure 3 and Figures 6A to 6C ). Optionally, the fixing portion 220 extending in at least two directions (such as, for example, in a bent configuration such as Figure 2 , Figure 3 and Figures 6A to 6C ) can provide an improved appearance for the covering material 204A at the seam region 206.

[0047] In various embodiments, the first engaging feature 232 optionally includes an end 236 of the retainer 218 opposite the end 226. Optionally, the second engaging feature 234 is between the first engaging feature 232 and the fixing portion 220, although this is not necessarily the case in other embodiments (see, for example Figure 9 ). Optionally, the second engaging feature 234 is disposed along the retainer 218 such that a predetermined amount of the retainer 218 is inserted into the seat back frame 208 in a fully engaged configuration (discussed below), which can provide a more uniform appearance for the covering material 204A.

[0048] The engaging features 232, 234 can be various suitable features or structures adapted to engage portions of the seat back frame 208 (such as but not limited to the protrusion 212 of the seat back frame 208 and / or the end 215 of the first channel wall 214). In Figures 2 to 6C the example shown, the first engaging feature 232 is a hook feature 233 and the second engaging feature 234 is a protrusion 235. Other non-limiting examples of the first engaging feature 232 and / or the second engaging feature 234 include U-shaped features, T-shaped features, hook features with other profiles or shapes, protrusions with other profiles or shapes, etc. In some embodiments, and as Figures 2 to 10 and Figures 12A to 12D shown, the engaging features 232, 234 can be on the same side of the retainer 218 and / or extend from the same side of the retainer 218. In other embodiments, and as Figures 11A to 11B and Figures 13A to 16B shown, the engaging features 232, 234 can be on opposite sides of the retainer 218 and / or extend from opposite sides of the retainer 218.

[0049] The first engaging feature 232 and the second engaging feature 234 can engage different portions of the seat back frame 208 in a fully engaged configuration (see, for example Figure 6C ), to attach the retainer 218 to the seat back frame 208. Optionally, and as Figure 6CAs shown, in the fully engaged configuration, a portion of the seat back frame 208 is sandwiched between and / or retained by the first engagement feature 232 and the second engagement feature 234. As a non-limiting example, the protrusion 212 and the end 215 of the first channel wall 214 are sandwiched and / or surrounded by the first engagement feature 232 and the second engagement feature 234. Such a clamping engagement can provide an improved connection between the retainer 218 and the seat back frame 208 and can inhibit and / or eliminate rattling of the retainer 218 relative to the seat back frame 208 when fully assembled. In other embodiments, the first engagement feature 232 and the second engagement feature 234 need not sandwich the seat back frame 208 to provide attachment of the retainer to the seat back frame (see, e.g., Figure 10 , Figures 11A to 11B , Figures 12A to 12D and Figure 14 ).

[0050] Referring to Figure 6A , the first engagement feature 232 optionally allows the retainer 218 to be in a temporary engagement configuration relative to the seat back frame 208. Optionally, in the temporary engagement configuration, the first engagement feature 232 can engage the frame portion that the second engagement feature 234 engages in the fully engaged configuration. As a non-limiting example, in Figure 6A , the first engagement feature 232 engages the end 215 of the first channel wall 214 in the temporary engagement configuration. In other embodiments, the first engagement feature 232 can engage other portions of the seat back frame 208 in the temporary engagement configuration (see, e.g., Figures 11A to 11B and Figures 12A to 12D ).

[0051] In the temporary engagement configuration, the retainer 218 can be engaged with the seat back frame 208 while supporting the weight of the cover material 204A. Such a configuration can allow for improved assembly by allowing an operator to temporarily mount the cover material 204A on the seat back frame 208 (e.g., to ensure alignment, etc.) without having to support the weight of the cover material 204A and / or fully engage the retainer 218 with the seat back frame 208. In various embodiments, starting from the temporary engagement configuration, the retainer 218 can have an improved ability to be inserted into the seat back frame 208 (e.g., with a reduced required insertion force). As a non-limiting example, and referring to Figures 6A to 6C , the retainer 218 can be rotated (as indicated by arrow 238) from the temporary engagement position before applying an insertion force (as indicated by arrow 240) to move the retainer 218 to the fully engaged configuration (illustrated in Figure 6C ) such that both the first engagement feature 232 and the second engagement feature 234 engage the seat back frame 208.

[0052] Figure 7Illustrated is another example of a retainer 718 in a fully engaged configuration according to an embodiment and relative to a seat back frame 208. The retainer 718 is similar to the retainer 218 except that the first engagement feature 232 is a hook portion 733 having a different profile and the second engagement feature 234 is a hook feature 735. The retainer 718 engages two portions of the frame 208 in the areas circled by the red and blue circles. Similar to the retainer 218, the retainer 718 clamps the frame 208 in the fully engaged configuration.

[0053] Figure 8 Illustrated is another example of a retainer 818 in a fully engaged configuration according to an embodiment and relative to a seat back frame 208. The retainer 818 is similar to the retainer 718 in that the first engagement feature 232 is the hook portion 733. Compared to the retainer 718, the second engagement feature 234 of the retainer 818 is a hook feature 835 having a different profile. The retainer 818 engages two portions of the frame 208 in the areas circled by the red and blue circles. Similar to the retainers 218 and 718, the retainer 818 clamps the frame 208 in the fully engaged configuration. In some embodiments, the retainer 818 having the hook feature 835 can allow the retainer 818 to accommodate various frame thicknesses (represented by the arrow 831 in Figure 8 . In other words, the retainer 818 can be used to attach a covering material to various types of frames that may or may not have different thicknesses. In some embodiments, the hook feature 835 can optionally be bent at least partially in a horizontal direction to accommodate various frame thicknesses.

[0054] Figure 9 Illustrated is another example of a retainer 918 in a fully engaged configuration according to an embodiment and relative to a seat back frame 208. Compared to the retainer 218, the second engagement feature 234 of the retainer 918 extends from the fixing portion 220 and, in addition, is a hook feature 935. The first engagement feature 232 of the retainer 918 is the hook portion 733. The retainer 918 engages two portions of the frame 208 in the areas circled by the red and blue circles. Similar to the retainers 218, 718, and 818, the retainer 918 clamps the frame 208 in the fully engaged configuration. Similar to the retainer 818, the retainer 918 can accommodate a variety of frame thicknesses. In addition, the hook feature 935 can allow the retainer 918 to accommodate various frame heights (i.e., the vertical distance between the portion of the frame 208 circled in red and the portion of the frame 208 circled in blue). This accommodation is represented by the arrow 931 in Figure 9 . In some embodiments, the hook feature 935 can optionally be bent at least partially in a vertical direction to accommodate various frame heights.

[0055] Figure 10Illustrated is another example of a retainer 1018 according to an embodiment. The retainer 1018 is shown in a fully engaged configuration with the seat back frame 1008. The seat back frame 1008 is similar to the seat back frame 208, except that the protrusion 212 extends from the second channel wall 216. The retainer 1018 is similar to the retainer 218, except that it includes an optional supplementary engagement feature 1048. When the supplementary engagement feature 1048 is included, the supplementary engagement feature 1048 can optionally engage the protrusion 212 extending from the second channel wall 216. In this example, the retainer 1018 can have at least three contact points between the retainer 1018 and the seat back frame 1008 (e.g., the contact between the first engagement feature 232 and the seat back frame 1008, the contact between the second engagement feature 234 and the seat back frame 1008, and the contact between the protrusion 212 and the retainer 1018), which can provide further improved engagement between the retainer 1018 and the seat back frame 1008.

[0056] Figures 11A to 11B Illustrated is another example of a retainer 1118 according to an embodiment. In Figure 11B this, the retainer 1118 is illustrated in a fully engaged configuration with the seat back frame 1008. The retainer 1118 is similar to the retainer 218, except that the profile of the fixing portion 220 of the retainer 1118 is different. The first engagement feature 232 of the retainer 1118 includes a hook feature 1133 facing in a direction opposite to that of the retainer 218, and the second engagement feature 234 is a hook feature 1135. In Figures 11A to 11B this example, the oppositely facing hook feature 1133, which is the first engagement feature 232, can engage the protrusion 212 on the second channel wall 216. As Figures 11A to 11B shown, a portion of the retainer 1118, such as but not limited to the first engagement feature 232, can be elastically deformable such that the portion of the retainer 1118 can selectively move between a compressed configuration ( Figure 11A ) and an uncompressed configuration ( Figure 11B ). When the elastically deformable portion of the retainer 1118 is included, the elastically deformable portion of the retainer 1118 can facilitate the engagement between the retainer 1118 and the seat back frame 1008.

[0057] Figures 12A to 12DShows another example of the retainer 1218 according to an embodiment. Compared to the retainer 218 that directly engages the seat back frame 208, the retainer 1218 engages a bracket 1242 positioned within the seat back frame 208. The retainer 1218 is similar to the retainer 218 except that the fixing portion 220 extends in a single direction. Additionally, compared to the retainer 218, the hook feature 1233, which is the first engagement feature 232, extends from the outermost portion of the protrusion 1235, which is the second engagement feature 234.

[0058] The bracket 1242 generally includes a receiving area 1244 that is at least partially defined by bracket extensions 1246, 1248. Optionally, the bracket extensions 1246, 1248 may include features such as, but not limited to, curved surfaces that facilitate movement of the retainer 1218 relative to the bracket 1214 during assembly. Optionally, the bracket 1242 may include a fixing portion 1250 for attaching a covering material such as the covering material 204B. The specific shapes of the bracket 1242, the receiving area 1244, the extensions 1246, 1248, and / or the fixing portion 1250 should not be considered a limitation of the present disclosure. The bracket 1242 may be attached or otherwise fixed to the seat back frame 208 using various techniques or mechanisms as needed.

[0059] A method of assembling the retainer 1218 with the seat back frame 208 may include positioning the retainer 1218 in a temporary retention configuration by partially inserting the retainer 1218 into the receiving area 1244 and causing the first engagement feature 232 to engage the bracket extension 1246 ( Figure 12B ). To move the retainer 1218 from the temporary retention configuration to the fully engaged configuration, the method may include optionally rotating the retainer 1218 such that the first engagement feature 232 engages the bracket extension 1248 and the second engagement feature 234 engages the bracket extension 1246, as Figure 12C shown. The method may include applying an insertion force to the retainer 1218 (represented by the arrow 1240 in Figure 12C ) to move the retainer 1218 to the fully engaged configuration, as Figure 12D shown. In certain embodiments, in the fully engaged configuration, both of the engagement features 232, 234 are at least partially within the receiving area 1244 and / or cause the engagement features 232, 234 to engage the bracket extensions 1246, 1248 within the receiving area 1244.

[0060] Figures 13A to 13CFIG. illustrates another example of the retainer 1318 according to an embodiment. Similar to the retainer 1218, the retainer 1318 engages a bracket 1342 positioned within the seat back frame. The retainer 1318 is similar to the retainer 218 except that the fixing portion 220 extends in a single direction. Further, compared with the retainer 218, the first engaging feature 232 is a protrusion 1333 extending in a first direction and the second engaging feature 234 is a second protrusion 1335 extending in a direction opposite to the first direction, and the engaging features 232, 234 together form a T-shaped retainer 1318. As Figures 13A to 13C shown, the profile of the protrusion 1333 may be different from the profile of the protrusion 1335, although they need not be so in other embodiments. In certain embodiments, the profile of the protrusion 1335 may facilitate rotation of the retainer 1318 relative to the bracket 1342.

[0061] The bracket 1342 is similar to the bracket 1242 except that the bracket 1342 includes bracket extensions 1346, 1348 and a receiving area 1344 having shapes and / or profiles different from those of the bracket 1242.

[0062] As Figures 13A to 13C shown, a method of assembling the retainer 1318 with the bracket 1342 includes partially inserting the retainer 1318 into the receiving area 1344 and causing the first engaging feature 232 to engage the bracket extension 1346 ( Figure 13A ). To move the retainer 1318 to a fully engaged configuration, the method may include rotating the retainer 1318 (represented by arrow 1338) such that the first engaging feature 232 continues to engage the bracket extension 1346 and the second engaging feature 234 engages the bracket extension 1348, as Figure 13B shown. In certain embodiments, at least a portion (e.g., the end of the protrusion 1335) of the protrusion 1335 may be flexible and / or elastically deformable such that the protrusion 1335 bends moderately, which may make it easier to insert the second engaging feature 234 into the receiving area 1344. The method may include further rotating the retainer 1318 and applying an insertion force to the retainer 1318 to move the retainer 1318 to a fully engaged configuration, as Figure 13C shown. In certain embodiments, in the fully engaged configuration, both of the engaging features 232, 234 are at least partially within the receiving area 1344 and / or cause the engaging features 232, 234 to engage the bracket extensions 1346, 1348 within the receiving area 1344.

[0063] Figure 14Illustrated is another example of retainer 1418 and bracket 1442 according to an embodiment. Retainer 1418 is similar to retainer 1318 except that the first engagement feature 232 is a hook feature 1433 and the second engagement feature 234 is a hook feature 1435. Bracket 1442 is similar to bracket 1342 except that bracket 1442 includes hook features as bracket extensions 1446, 1448.

[0064] Figures 15A to 15B Illustrated is another example of retainer 1518 with seat back frame 1008 according to an embodiment. Figure 15A Illustrated is retainer 1518 in a fully engaged configuration, and Figure 15B Illustrated is retainer 1518 in a temporary retention configuration. Retainer 1518 is similar to retainer 1318 in that the first engagement feature 232 is a protrusion 1533 extending in a first direction. Protrusion 1533 as the first engagement feature 232 has a different profile compared to protrusion 1333. In some examples, extension 1537 of protrusion 1533 may allow retainer 1518 to accommodate frames with various channel depths (i.e., the distance from the lower portion of protrusion 212 to the base 211 of channel 210). In certain embodiments, and as Figure 15B shown, extension 1537 may facilitate positioning retainer 1518 in the temporary retention configuration. Similar to retainer 1118, retainer 1518 includes a hook feature 1135 as the second engagement feature 234 and extending in a direction opposite to the first engagement feature 232.

[0065] Figures 16A to 16B Illustrated is another example of retainer 1618 with seat back frame 1008 according to an embodiment. Figure 16A Illustrated is retainer 1518 in a fully engaged configuration, and Figure 16B Illustrated is retainer 1518 in a temporary retention configuration. Retainer 1618 is similar to retainer 1518 in that the second engagement feature 234 is a hook feature 1135. Compared to retainer 1518, retainer 1618 includes a hook feature 1633 as the first engagement feature 232 and extending in a direction opposite to the second engagement feature 234. Similar to retainer 1118, hook feature 1633 of retainer 1618 may be elastically deformable and movable between a compressed configuration and an uncompressed configuration. When including elastically deformable hook feature 1633, elastically deformable hook feature 1633 may facilitate engagement between retainer 1618 and seat back frame 1008. Optionally, extension 1637 of hook feature 1633 may further facilitate initial engagement of hook feature 1633 with frame 1008 and guide retainer 1618 into channel 210. As Figure 16BAs shown, in various embodiments, the extension portion 1637 can further facilitate positioning the retainer 1618 in a temporary retention configuration.
