AI Technical Summary
Existing personal care compositions such as sunscreen products have performance, aesthetics and cost challenges in bead-moving consumer packaging, especially stability issues, and primary emulsifiers or auxilizers are often required to increase formulation complexity and cost.
High content of glycerol and propylene glycol are used as dispensing agents, combined with a co-emulsifier such as sodium polyacrylate and cetyl alcohol to form an oil-in-water emulsifier, avoid the use of a main emulsifier, stabilize the emulsion through thickening, and achieve uniform distribution using a ball dispenser.
The stability and uniform distribution of the sunscreen composition without the need for a main emulsifier is achieved, which improves the distribution rate and water resistance, while reducing viscosity and whitening effects, enhancing microbial resistance and improving consumer experience.

Abstract
Description
[0001] Cross - reference to related applications
[0002] This application claims the benefit of U.S. Provisional Patent Application No. 63 / 251,875, filed Oct. 4, 2021, the content of which is incorporated herein by reference in its entirety. Technical field
[0003] Embodiments relate to personal care compositions that include an active agent (such as a sunscreen filter) and a dispensing agent (including a polyol such as glycerin). Embodiments further relate to personal care products that contain the personal care composition. In one example, the personal care composition includes a relatively high level of glycerin, and the personal care product includes a roll - on applicator. Background art
[0004] The prior art can protect horny substances from the harmful environment, such as the influence of electromagnetic radiation. For example, personal care compositions can contain sunscreen filters to provide light protection by absorbing or scattering ultraviolet (UV) radiation. At the same time, personal care compositions can be in the form of emulsions and be dispensed from tubes, spray bottles, etc. However, due to various challenges in terms of performance, aesthetics, and cost, there are few commercially available personal care roll - on products. Emulsions may also require primary emulsifiers or co - emulsifiers together with the primary emulsifier to stabilize the emulsion, which can increase the formulation cost or complexity. Therefore, there is room for improvement to provide a personal care composition, especially a sunscreen composition, in a roll - on consumer packaging product that exhibits improved performance, aesthetics, and / or cost. There is also room for improvement to provide a personal care composition that exhibits relatively good stability without the need for ingredients that increase cost or complexity. Summary of the invention
[0005] Embodiments relate to personal care compositions that contain water and a dispensing agent. For example, water can be present in an amount of 40.0 wt.% to 90.0 wt.%, based on the total weight of the composition. For example, the dispensing agent can include a polyol. For example, the polyol can include glycerin. In one example, glycerin can be present in an amount of ≥7.5 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition. [0027] Additionally or alternatively, the ratio of the two polyols present in the personal care composition can be from about 1:99 to 99:1, including each number and / or fraction therebetween. For example, the ratio of glycerin to another polyol can be from 1:99 to 99:1, from 1:25 to 25:1, from 1:3 to 3:1, 1:1, including each number and / or fraction therebetween. Additionally or alternatively, the personal care composition can contain more glycerin than any or all of the polyols in the personal care composition. For example, a sunscreen composition can have a glycerin to propylene glycol ratio of from 5:1 to 15:1, including each number and / or fraction therebetween, such as 9:1. For example, a sunscreen composition can have a glycerin to caprylyl glycol ratio of from 10:1 to 30:1, including each number and / or fraction therebetween, such as 24:1. In another example, when glycerin is present in a relatively low amount (e.g., <0.2 wt.%, <0.1 wt.%, trace amount, impurity, etc.), the sunscreen composition can have a propylene glycol to caprylyl glycol ratio of from 1:10 to 10:1, including each number and / or fraction therebetween, such as 3:1.

[0029] The additional ingredients can be present in an amount of from about 0.001 wt.% to about 90.0 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition. One or more additional ingredients can be present, for example, in an amount of 0.01 wt.%, 0.08 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 2.0 wt.%, 5.0 wt.%, 10.0 wt.%, 20.0 wt.%, 30.0 wt.%, 40.0 wt.%, 50.0 wt.%, 60.0 wt.%, 70.0 wt.%, 80.0 wt.%, 91.8 wt.%, including each number and / or fraction therebetween, based on the total weight of the sunscreen composition. The total amount of all additional ingredients can be sufficient to bring the total amount of the composition to 100 wt.%.
[0030] For example, a personal care composition may comprise an oil-in-water (O / W) emulsifier. For example, the O / W emulsifier may have an HLB of ≥7, preferably 8 to 18. Examples of useful O / W emulsifiers include but are not limited to certain sucrose esters (e.g., sucrose stearate, sucrose laurate, etc.), sorbitan esters (e.g., sorbitan laurate, etc.), polyglycerol esters (e.g., polyglycerol-3 methylglucose distearate, etc.), ethoxylated fatty ethers and ethoxylated fatty esters, which have an HLB of ≥7, preferably 8 - 18, or combinations thereof. Examples of useful natural O / W emulsifiers include but are not limited to cetearyl alcohol (and) cetearyl glucoside, glyceryl stearate (and) cetearyl alcohol (and) sodium stearoyl lactylate, cetearyl alcohol wheat germ glycosides (and) cetearyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol oleate (and) sorbitan oleate, or combinations thereof. Thus, for example, a sunscreen composition may comprise a primary O / W emulsifier or a conventional O / W emulsifier (e.g., an O / W emulsifier that can typically be used alone due to its activity at the oil-water interface), such as behenyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate (and) PEG-100 stearate, cetearyl alcohol (and) coco-glucoside, cetearyl alcohol (and) dicetyl phosphate (and) ceteth-10 phosphate, glyceryl polyether-2 cocoate, or combinations thereof.
[0031] Preferably, the personal care composition comprises a co-emulsifier for the O / W emulsion and excludes (e.g., is free of) a primary O / W emulsifier or a conventional O / W emulsifier. For example, a sunscreen composition may comprise one or more co-emulsifiers having an HLB of ≥7, preferably 8 - 18, but which at least in part stabilizes the emulsion through thickening and thus is not typically used alone in the absence of an O / W emulsifier or a conventional O / W emulsifier. For example, a sunscreen composition may comprise a fatty alcohol such as cetyl alcohol, a salt of an acrylate polymer such as sodium polyacrylate, or combinations thereof, and excludes a primary O / W emulsifier or a conventional O / W emulsifier such as glyceryl polyether-2 cocoate. Additionally or alternatively, the sunscreen composition may exclude a W / O emulsifier. For example, the sunscreen composition may exclude cetyl PEG / PPG-10 / 1 dimethicone.
[0032] An emulsifier or co-emulsifier can be present in an amount of from about 0.1 wt.% to about 5.0 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition. For example, the co-emulsifier can be present in an amount of from about 0.5 wt.% to about 1.5 wt.%, based on the total weight of the sunscreen composition. The co-emulsifier can be present, for example, in amounts of 0.4 wt.%, 0.45 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, 0.55 wt.%, 0.6 wt.%, 0.65 wt.%, 0.7 wt.%, 0.75 wt.%, 0.8 wt.%, 0.85 wt.%, 0.9 wt.%, 0.95 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 1.1 wt.%, 1.2 wt.%, 1.3 wt.%, 1.4 wt.%, 1.5 wt.%, 1.8 wt.%, including each number and / or fraction therebetween, based on the total weight of the sunscreen composition.
[0033] In a further example, the personal care composition can comprise a film-forming polymer capable of providing a substantially homogeneous and / or structured water-lipid film on the skin. Generally, the film-forming polymer can be synthesized from two or more different monomers to form a copolymer and / or can be synthesized from individual polymer chains linked by a bridging molecule or crosslinking agent to form a crosslinked copolymer called a crosslinked polymer. For example, the film-forming polymer can include, but is not limited to, silicone hybrids, (meth)acrylates, rosin acid derivatives, olefins, silicones, resins, vinyl acetate (VA), vinyl pyrrolidone (VP), maleates, alkyl esters, monomers, copolymers, crosslinked polymers and / or terpolymers of long-chain or short-chain carboxylic acids, or combinations thereof. As described above, certain crosslinked polymers can primarily or specifically provide gelling, rheology modifier, adhesive or absorbent functions due to their structure and / or activation. Thus, while such crosslinked polymers can be used for rheological purposes, particularly useful polymers for forming films can have an MW of about 1,500,000 DA or lower.
[0034] The film-forming polymer can include crotonic acid / vinyl C8-C 12 isooctyl ester / VA / divinyl polydimethylsiloxane crosslinked polymer, acrylate / polydimethylsiloxane copolymer, VA / butyl maleate / isobornyl acrylate copolymer, acrylate / methacrylic acid C 12-22 alkyl ester copolymer, acrylate / octyl acrylamide copolymer, methyl dihydroabietate, trimethylsilyloxy silicate, C 24 -C 28Alkyl dimethyl silyloxy trimethyl silyloxy silicate, polymethylsilsesquioxane / trimethylsilyloxy silicate, polymethylsilsesquioxane, perfluorononyl polydimethylsiloxane, trifluoropropyl dimethyl siloxy / trimethyl silyloxy sesquisiloxane, PPG-17 / isophorone diisocyanate / dimethylolpropionic acid copolymer, polyurethane (such as 32, 34, 35, 48, etc.), hydrolyzed wheat protein / PVP cross-linked polymer, maltodextrin / VP copolymer, butylated PVP copolymer, VP / polycarbamoyl polyethylene glycol ester, VP / dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate / polycarbamoyl polyethylene glycol ester, VP / polydimethylsiloxanol acrylate / polycarbamoyl polyethylene glycol ester, VP / eicosene copolymer, adipic acid / diethylene glycol cross-linked polymer, trimethylpentanediol / adipic acid / glycerol cross-linked polymer, polyester-7 (and) neopentyl glycol diheptanoate, polyester-10 (and) propylene glycol dibenzoate, hydrogenated polycyclopentadiene (and) isododecane, stearyl / octyldodecyl citrate cross-linked polymer, hydroxyethyl acrylate / sodium acryloyldimethyltaurate copolymer, or a combination thereof.
[0035] The film-forming polymer can be dispersed in the premix. For example, non-aqueous dispersants can include alcohols, ethers, fatty acids, silicone fluids, esters, hydrocarbons, fluorinated hydrocarbons, or a combination thereof. The film-forming polymer can be present in an aqueous solvent, such as dispersed in water. In one example, the (meth)acrylate film-forming polymer can be present at a solids content of about 20 wt.% to 100 wt.%, such as 30 wt.% to 40 wt.%, based on the total weight of the dispersion.
[0036] The film-forming polymer can be present in an amount of about 0.1 wt.% to about 5.0 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition. For example, one or more film-forming polymers can be present in amounts of 0.08 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 2.0 wt.%, 2.5 wt.%, 3.5 wt.%, 5.1 wt.%, 6.0 wt.%, including every number and / or fraction therebetween, based on the total weight of the sunscreen composition.
[0037] Personal care compositions may contain thickeners to modify viscosity. Examples of thickeners include plant-based polymer thickeners, mineral thickeners, wax thickeners, synthetic polymer thickeners, or combinations thereof. Plant-based polymer thickeners may include, but are not limited to, xanthan gum, konjac gum, guar gum, gum arabic, cellulose derivatives (such as hydroxycellulose, hydroxyethyl cellulose), or combinations thereof. Mineral thickeners may include, but are not limited to, silica, bentonite, magnesium aluminum silicate, or combinations thereof. Natural or synthetic waxes may include, but are not limited to, animal waxes, plant waxes, mineral waxes, petroleum waxes, silicone waxes, or combinations thereof. Examples of useful wax thickeners include, but are not limited to, alkyl silicones, alkyltrimethylsilanes, beeswax, behenyl behenate, cetyl dimethicone, candelilla wax, carnauba wax, synthetic carnauba wax, PEG-12 carnauba wax, myrica wax, rice bran wax, soybean wax, ozokerite, hydrogenated microcrystalline wax, jojoba wax, microcrystalline wax, lanolin wax, ceresin wax, paraffin wax, synthetic paraffin wax, cetyl esters, C 20 -C 40 alkyl esters, cetyl palmitate, stearyl palmitate, lauryl behenate, cetyl octanoate, cetyl ricinoleate, cetyl stearate, decyl oleate, myristyl stearate, lauryl stearate, octyldodecyl stearate, octyldodecyl stearoyl stearate, oleyl arachidate, oleyl stearate, tridecyl stearate, pentaerythrityl tetrastearate, pentaerythrityl distearate, polyethylene, hydrogenated cottonseed oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil, hydrogenated jojoba oil, hydrogenated palm oil, hydrogenated palm kernel oil, hydrogenated olive oil, polyamide, C 30 -C 60 fatty alcohols, polypropylene, polybutane, zinc stearate, stearyl palmitate, behenyl stearate, shellac wax, ethylene glycol montanate, C 20 -C 40 alkyl hydroxy stearyl stearate, glyceryl tristearate, or combinations thereof.
[0038] Synthetic thickeners may include crosslinked polymers, such as, but not limited to, alkyl acrylate polymers, wherein the comonomers consist of at least one of the following: acrylic acid, sodium acrylate, methacrylic acid, or alkyl acrylates. Polymers consisting solely of acrylic acid are commonly referred to as carbomers. Thus, for example, single molecules of carbomer can be crosslinked to provide a crosslinked polymer with an average molecular weight (MW) exceeding 1 billion Daltons (Da). In one example, acrylic acid can be crosslinked with allyl sucrose or allyl pentaerythritol. Similarly, copolymers of alkyl acrylates and one or more monomers of acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, or one of their simple esters can be crosslinked (e.g., with allyl (2-propenyl) ether of sucrose or allyl ether of pentaerythritol) to form acrylate / alkyl acrylate 10-30 crosslinked polymers. 10-30 alkyl ester crosslinked polymers.
[0039] The thickener(s) may be present in an amount of from about 0.01 wt.% to about 10.0 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition. For example, one or more thickeners may be present in an amount of 0.008 wt.%, 0.05 wt.%, 0.1 wt.%, 0.5 wt.%, 1.0 wt.%, 2.0 wt.%, 3.0 wt.%, 3.5 wt.%, 4.0 wt.%, 5.0 wt.%, 6.0 wt.%, 12.0 wt.%, including every number and / or fraction therebetween, based on the total weight of the composition.
[0040] Accordingly, the personal care composition ingredients and their respective amounts can be selected based on various formulation criteria such as aesthetics, performance, cost, etc. In addition, the personal care composition may include one or more dosage forms, such as but not limited to emulsions (O / W, W / O, O / O, O / S, multiple emulsions, etc.), gels, lotions, creams, sprays, mists, sticks, mice, foams, ointments, milks, bases, concentrates, powders, or combinations thereof. Such forms can initially or ultimately be substantially aqueous or substantially anhydrous. For example, a substantially anhydrous base can be used in an aqueous emulsion to form a lotion or cream. Similarly, the ingredients and usage levels for preparing such forms can be readily adjusted and mixed in a single phase or multiple phases to provide the desired commercial personal care product. Thus, for example, water, emulsifiers, film formers, etc. can be included, omitted, adjusted, or mixed in a single phase or multiple phases to provide a commercial product taking into account cost, aesthetics, and / or product performance goals.
[0041] In addition, the personal care composition can be filled into any number of bottles, plastic bottles, tubes, parkettes, etc., having various closure structures, dispensers, pumps, sprayers (e.g., mists, aerosols, bag on valve), etc., or combinations thereof. A bag on valve system can be used, for example, to deliver the personal care composition using a compressed gas such as air, nitrogen, or carbon dioxide. In addition, when combined with a propellant, the personal care composition can be formulated as a concentrate that forms a continuous aerosol spray commercial product. The propellant can include, for example, isobutene, butane, propane, dimethyl ether, methyl ether, tetrafluoroethane, 1,1-difluoroethane, or combinations thereof. The propellant typically exists in an equilibrium state of vapor and liquid and can be dissolved in or miscible with the composition. The ratio of the propellant to the concentrate can be adjusted according to cost, aesthetics, and product performance goals. Thus, the concentrate and the propellant can be added to the aerosol container in a ratio of from about 90:10 to about 60:40, such as about 75:25, about 70:30, etc. The aerosol propellant can be present, for example, in an amount of from about 10 wt.% to about 60 wt.%, based on the total weight of the personal care composition (e.g., the final composition).
[0042] In one example, a sunscreen composition can be housed in a reservoir of a roll-on applicator that includes a ball dispenser in fluid communication with the reservoir to dispense the sunscreen composition. For example, the ball dispenser can have a substantially spherical shape and / or can be rotatably positioned on the roll-on applicator to allow the ball dispenser to roll and dispense the sunscreen composition (e.g., in a controlled amount) from the reservoir when the ball dispenser of the roll-on applicator rolls onto a keratinous or hirsute substrate. As Figures 1A to 1B shown, a personal care product 10 in the form of a roll-on applicator includes a body 12 that forms a reservoir 14 to house a personal care composition, and a ball dispenser 16 that is in fluid communication with the reservoir 14 to dispense the personal care composition. The illustrated personal care product 10 includes a cap 18 that is mechanically attached to the personal care product 10 to cover the ball dispenser 16 when the personal care product 10 is not in use, and the cap 18 can be mechanically moved from the personal care product 10 to allow the ball dispenser 16 to contact a keratinous or hirsute substrate when the personal care product 10 is in use, as Figure 1A-1B shown. The illustrated ball dispenser 16 has a substantially spherical shape and is rotatably positioned on the personal care product 10 to allow the ball dispenser 16 to roll and dispense the personal care composition (e.g., in a controlled amount) from the reservoir 14 when the ball dispenser 16 rolls onto a keratinous or hirsute substrate.
[0043] However, it should be understood that configurations such as those discussed in detail herein and variations that fall within the true scope and spirit of the present disclosure can be useful in embodiments. For example, other general ball dispenser shapes can include, but are not limited to, cylinders, oblate spheroids (e.g., ellipsoids rotated about their polar axes), barrel shapes (e.g., oblate spheroids with flat ends), etc. Similarly, one or more ball dispensers (e.g., rollers, etc.) can be positioned over an opening of the roll-on applicator (e.g., an opening corresponding to one of a plurality of ball dispensers, an opening for two or more ball dispensers, etc.) such that a portion of one or more ball dispensers extends outwardly from the opening while another portion of one or more ball dispensers is in fluid communication with the reservoir and thus in fluid communication with the personal care composition contained therein. The portion of one or more ball dispensers that is in fluid communication with the reservoir can extend directly into the reservoir or can be in fluid communication with the reservoir through a fluid inlet. Thus, in one example, one or more ball dispensers can be operative to dispense a flowable sunscreen composition from the reservoir when rotated. Such roll-on applicators are commercially available and are readily obtainable in a variety of materials (e.g., plastics, metals, glass, etc.), and due to the surprising and unexpected properties of the personal care compositions discussed in detail herein, such roll-on applicators can be advantageously used in embodiments.
[0044] Examples
[0045] Table 1-3 shows the dispensing rates of aqueous formulations having, for example, different levels of water and polyols selected from glycerol, propylene glycol, or combinations thereof. The example formulations were prepared using known methods. Briefly, all equipment was cleaned and disinfected. When adding the polyol to the water, the example formulations were mixed using a stir bar until the pH, temperature, and viscosity were substantially uniform. As shown, the pH and viscosity of the formulations in Table 1-3 were as follows: 5.58 - 6.05, 0 centipoise (cP) - 29.69 cP; 5.83 - 6.91, 1.56 cP - 21.87 cP; 5.42 - 6.12, 6.25 cP - 10.94 cP. The example formulations were then deposited into the reservoir of a roll-on applicator, such as reservoir 14( Figure 1A-1B ), and applied to the skin through the ball dispenser of the roll-on applicator, such as dispenser 16( Figure 1A-1B ).
[0046] The dispensing rate was determined using a qualitative numerical range, with an average score per reading for three subjects after application, from 1 (poor dispensing rate) to 100 (excellent dispensing rate). The dispensing rate was based on the amount of personal care composition remaining after rolling (i.e., skipping, where the ball dispenser rolls but does not leave personal care composition, or slides along the skin but the ball dispenser does not roll, or alternatively, the amount of personal care composition successfully applied).

[0051] Table III: Dispensing Rates of Roll-on Applicators of Aqueous Formulations Containing Glycerol and Propylene Glycol
[0052]
[0053]
[0054] As shown in Table 1-2, increasing the amount of glycerol or propylene glycol present alone from 1 wt.% to 50 wt.% increased the dispensing rate, and then decreased the dispensing rate when above 50 wt.% (e.g., 75 wt.%). Thus, the presence of a relatively small amount of each polyol alone does not significantly reduce the dispensing rate of the roll-on applicator. Surprisingly, the presence of a relatively high level of glycerol or propylene glycol alone increased the dispensing rate of the roll-on applicator, and the viscosities increased from 0 centipoise (cP) to 20.31 cP or 10.94 cP, respectively. Without being bound by any theory, the example polyols used alone are thought to adhere better to the ball dispenser than water and surprisingly increase the dispensing rate until the usage level starts to decrease the dispensing rate.
[0055] As shown in Table 3, example formulations having ratios of water, glycerol, and propylene glycol of 1:0.01:0.99 to 1:0.1:0.9 showed poor dispensing rates (20 - 30) at similar viscosities (10.94 cP) as discussed above. Thus, although the usage levels of propylene glycol shown in Table 2 are similar or the excellent dispensing rates of glycerol shown in Table 1 at similar usage levels, the excellent dispensing rate shown when the ratio of water to propylene glycol is 1:1 as shown in Table 2 decreased significantly with the addition of a relatively small amount of glycerol. At the same time, as further shown in Table 3, example formulations having ratios of water, glycerol, and propylene glycol of 1:0.25:0.75 to 1:0.75:0.25 showed excellent dispensing rates (70 - 80) with relatively good viscosities (6.25 cP - 10.94 cP), which were maintained or improved (75 - 85) at ratios of 1.0:0.9:0.1 to 1.0:0.99:0.01 with relatively good viscosities (6.07 cP - 6.12 cP). Thus, the excellent dispensing rates of water and glycerol observed in Table 1 at ratios of 1:1 to 3:1 were not decreased upon the addition of propylene glycol. Additionally or alternatively, Table 3 surprisingly shows that when present together, relatively higher dispensing rates (e.g., 75 - 85) are obtained in aqueous formulations having more glycerol than propylene glycol.
[0056] Table 4 shows Example O / W emulsions prepared using known methods (i.e., formulations mixed in stages at conventional temperatures). As shown in Table 4, the Example O / W emulsions include sunscreen filters, an aqueous continuous phase, and a partitioning agent. It should be understood that the Example formulations include aspects of non-limiting embodiments, and the listed ingredients may be replaced or supplemented, or their respective levels or ratios may be adjusted, or the phases may be mixed in a single stage or multiple stages, based on various formulation criteria such as, but not limited to, aesthetics (e.g., sensory characteristics), performance (e.g., light protection, partitioning rate, etc.), cost, etc. For example, the Example O / W emulsions shown in Table 4 may exclude one or more of the listed ingredients, such as any or all of the sunscreen filters (e.g., to provide a personal care composition having one or more active ingredients, such as antioxidants, coolants, anti-aging ingredients, insect repellents, anti-acne agents, depigmenting agents, brightening agents, vitamins, etc.), partitioning agents (e.g., only including glycerol as a partitioning agent, etc.), etc. In the Example O / W emulsions shown, other ingredients include co-emulsifiers (without a primary emulsifier), film-forming polymers, a preservative system, and chelating agents.
[0057] Table IV: Example O / W Emulsions
[0058]
[0059]
[0060] An effective amount of an organic sunscreen filter is used to provide a sun protection factor (SPF) equal to or greater than fifty (50+). Thus, the dispersed oil phase consists of a liquid organic sunscreen filter, cetyl alcohol, and cetyl dimethicone. Notably, excellent partitioning rates were observed as the skipping was surprisingly minimized with increasing levels of glycerol. In this regard, the ball dispenser of the roll-on applicator rolls in a substantially continuous and / or controlled manner and leaves the sunscreen composition.
[0061] Furthermore, no primary emulsifier or conventional emulsifiers, such as behenyl alcohol, glyceryl stearate (and) PEG-100 stearate, glyceryl polyether-2 cocoate, etc., were added, although the embodiments do not exclude having such ingredients. Instead, the Example O / W emulsions shown in Table 4 contain only co-emulsifiers that at least partially stabilize the emulsion through thickening and thus are not typically used alone in the absence of a primary emulsifier or conventional emulsifiers. Additionally, the co-emulsifiers shown in Table 4 are present at relatively low levels, especially compared to the conventional usage levels of primary emulsifiers or conventional emulsifiers. Moreover, the whitening effect (caused by an increase in emulsifier concentration) was minimized, and thus a technical benefit related to consumer preference was provided by a substantially transparent aesthetics upon application (e.g., disappearing relatively quickly as the composition rolls).
[0062] In addition, surprisingly, a stable emulsion is provided, given that the effectiveness of sodium polyacrylate (as an aqueous-phase rheology modifier) is expected to decrease with increasing glycerol levels, resulting in emulsion instability. However, glycerol unexpectedly enhances emulsion stability. Now referring to Figure 2A , the images of the Example O / W emulsions shown in Table 4 illustrate the oil bodies formed in the aqueous continuous phase. As Figure 2B shown, the oil bodies do not grow and advantageously decrease in size. Thus, the Example O / W formulations remain substantially dispersed and substantially do not separate. In addition, the pH remains substantially constant and the viscosity curves at room temperature and upon heating indicate that the structure remains stable. Thus, the addition of glycerol does not reduce the stability of the sunscreen composition and / or relatively improves the stability of the sunscreen composition. Furthermore, no substantial changes in color, odor, or appearance are observed.
[0063] In addition, increasing the glycerol level reduces the water activity, thereby enhancing microbial resistance. Thus, relatively low levels of preservatives can be used. Alternatively, conventional levels of preservatives can be used in embodiments to enhance protection of the product and the consumer against contamination due to the increased glycerol level. The water activity is measured using a dew point sensor with a mirror and a light source to detect condensation and read the relative humidity of the sample, which is equivalent to the water activity of the sample. In one example, the water activity of the Example O / W emulsion shown in Table 4 is 0.9208. Notably, the Example O / W emulsion shows a significantly better water activity value (0.9811) when glycerol is present compared to when glycerol is absent. Thus, increasing the glycerol level can minimize the obstacles associated with contamination during operation of a roll-on applicator.
[0064] Furthermore, surprisingly, increasing the amount of glycerol to relatively high levels does not have a negative impact on the sensory profile of the sunscreen formulation or the performance of the consumer packaged product. In this regard, relatively high levels of glycerol in the emulsion are uncommon considering that glycerol is traditionally thought to impart unacceptable sticky or tacky properties to the consumer. However, consumers tested the Example O / W emulsion dispensed by a commercially available roll-on applicator shown in Table 4 (compared to commercially available low-viscosity chemical sunscreen emulsion products, commercially available all-mineral sunscreen products, and commercially available all-mineral roll-on sunscreen products) and had statistically significantly better ratings on the following overall metrics: overall liking (how much the consumer liked the product overall); expectancy comparison (how well the product met expectations based on the description); current product comparison (how the product compared overall to the most commonly used product).
[0065] The further evaluation of the personal care product (consumer packaged product) according to the embodiments is statistically significantly superior to commercially available roll-on sunscreen products in the following packaging / application diagnostics: easy to move (easy to move on the skin); messiness of application (less messy application); size of the ball dispenser. The personal care product according to the embodiments is also better evaluated in the following aspects: amount dispensed; dispensing uniformity; size of the applicator. The further evaluation of the personal care product according to the embodiments is statistically significantly superior to other products in the following packaging application attributes: quick and easy application; no waste for specific body parts; helps easy application on others; makes it easier for children to apply by themselves; the packaging remains clean throughout use. The personal care product according to the embodiments is also better evaluated in the following aspects: goes where it is desired to go; no missed spots.
[0066] The further evaluation of the personal care product according to the embodiments is statistically significantly superior to commercially available roll-on sunscreen products in the following rub-in attributes: easy to rub in; quickly absorbed by the skin; evenly spread on the skin; does not feel greasy when rubbed in; not sticky / tacky when rubbed in; light texture when rubbed in; does not leave any residual product on the hands after rubbing in; rubs in clean; is less messy to apply compared to the sunscreen emulsions commonly used by the user. The further evaluation of the personal care product according to the embodiments is statistically significantly superior to other products in the following skin feel attributes: does not make the skin sticky / tacky; makes the skin smooth; makes the skin moisturized; has no unwanted residues; makes the skin feel protected; dries quickly on the skin; the skin feels light. The personal care product according to the embodiments is also better evaluated in the following aspect: does not make the skin oily / greasy.
[0067] Furthermore, surprisingly, relatively high levels of glycerin do not affect photoprotection or water resistance. Glycerin is water-soluble but does not evaporate like water. Thus, the amount of remining glycerin could reasonably cause interference with the sunscreen filters or could reasonably cause the sunscreen composition to be washed off more easily. In accordance with the FDA Final Monograph, Federal Register, Volume 76, Number 117, June 17, 2011, 21 CFR 201.327, in vivo SPF data for 10 subjects were obtained using a Xeon Arc solar simulator lamp as the ratio of the minimum erythema dose (MED)p value generated at the sun-protected site to the MEDu value generated at the unprotected site after 80 minutes of water emersion. Unexpectedly, the example O / W emulsion shown in Table 4 exhibited excellent average 80-minute water resistance of 70.53 ± 8.79 for a product with an expected SPF of 50+.
[0068] Table 5 shows the example slurries prepared using known methods (i.e., formulations mixed in stages at conventional temperatures). As shown in Table 5, the example O / W slurries include sunscreen filters, an aqueous continuous phase, and a dispensing agent. In the illustrated example slurries, other ingredients include a co-emulsifier (no primary emulsifier), a film-forming polymer, a preservative system, a chelating agent, and a thickening agent.
[0069] Table V: Example O / W Slurries
[0070]
[0071] An effective amount of an organic sunscreen filter is used to provide a sun protection factor (SPF) equal to or greater than fifty (50+). Thus, the dispersed oil phase consists of a liquid organic sunscreen filter and cetyl dimethicone. Notably, the slurry can be easily deposited from a commercially available applicator (e.g., a dropper, a tube, etc.), spreads easily on the skin, reduces the whitening effect upon application, and maintains stability despite the absence of a primary emulsifier.
