AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes with polyurethane-based adhesives face a challenge in balancing excellent adhesion properties with a low odor profile, often exacerbated by the addition of tackifier resins, and there is a need for a solution that is cost-effective and safe to produce without hazardous substances.

Method used

Incorporating activated carbon derivatives into the polyurethane-based pressure-sensitive adhesive, particularly in finely divided form, to reduce odor without compromising adhesion properties, using a process that integrates with existing manufacturing infrastructure.

Benefits of technology

The solution results in pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes with excellent adhesion and a virtually odor-neutral profile, achieved through a simple and safe production process that maintains the integrity of the adhesive properties.

Abstract

Pressure-sensitive adhesive tape with a polyurethane-based pressure-sensitive adhesive comprising: - a chemically cross-linked polyurethane polymer, produced by catalytic polyaddition of one or more polyisocyanates with one or more polyols, and - one or more adhesive resins, characterized in that the polyurethane-based pressure-sensitive adhesive comprises one or more activated carbon derivatives to reduce odor, wherein the one or more activated carbon derivatives are selected from the group consisting of chemically and / or physically modified activated carbon, wherein the one or more activated carbon derivatives have a particle size distribution wherein 70% of the particles have a particle size of 10 µm or less, and wherein the pressure-sensitive adhesive tape has a rating in the range of 1 to 2 in the odor test according to VDA 270 Variant 3.
