AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Existing methods for controlling high beam activation on vehicles fail to accurately determine if a street is illuminated, leading to incorrect activation or deactivation based solely on the presence or condition of street lights, which is problematic in urban areas where regulations require precise lighting control.

Method used

The method involves detecting lane markings to infer the lighting situation by measuring the length of the markings, activating the high beam when the length falls below a target threshold, typically less than 60 meters, and considering the actual brightness of the surroundings to ensure reliable activation outside built-up areas.

Benefits of technology

This approach allows for precise control of high beam activation based on the actual lighting conditions, ensuring compliance with road traffic regulations by reliably activating the high beam only when necessary, thereby avoiding incorrect activation in illuminated areas.

Description

[0001] The invention relates to a method for controlling high beam on a vehicle.

[0002] High beams are always activated when driving on an unlit road. This can be in urban or rural areas. High beams are particularly used on a vehicle when the vehicle is outside of built-up areas. If the high beams are to be activated automatically, this is usually done via visual detection. A known method is to use visual detection of streetlights to determine whether the vehicle is in an urban or rural area.

[0003] The disadvantage is that the streetlights themselves are detected, but not their status. This means, in particular, that the detection cannot determine whether the streetlight is actually lit or not. Furthermore, it cannot be determined whether the street is actually illuminated by the streetlight. Consequently, the actual lighting situation cannot be determined, which could lead to the vehicle's high beams being activated incorrectly.

[0004] This is particularly problematic when the vehicle is within a built-up area. In well-lit built-up areas, the high beams must be deactivated and, according to road traffic regulations, may only be switched on when the road is no longer actively lit.

[0005] US Patent No. 9,527,429 B2 describes a method for controlling the front lighting of a vehicle. This allows the front lighting itself to be controlled, but independently of the lighting situation caused by a high beam.

[0006] The object of the present invention is to provide a method for controlling high beams on a vehicle that overcomes the aforementioned disadvantages. In particular, the challenge lies in detecting whether a road is actually illuminated or not.

[0007] According to the invention, this object is achieved by a method having the features in claim 1, and in particular in the characterizing part of claim 1. Advantageous embodiments and further developments emerge from the dependent claims.

[0008] At the core of the method according to the invention, a lane marking on a roadway is detected, wherein the lighting situation in the surroundings is inferred from the length of the detected lane marking, and if a target length is not reached, the high beam is activated. This means that the actual lighting situation on the road can be taken into account, and not just the presence of street lamps, particularly regardless of their condition. By detecting the lane marking, the degree of lighting in the surroundings can be inferred. If a particularly long lane marking is detected, the lighting situation in the surroundings appears to be sufficient, meaning that high beam is not necessary. If the detected lane marking is relatively short, i.e. the lane marking can only be seen in a small space in front of the vehicle, the lighting situation in the surroundings does not appear to be sufficient.Accordingly, the high beam can be activated in such an environment.

[0009] The method is designed to control the high beam on a vehicle, with the high beam being controlled depending on the road lighting. By taking the actual ambient brightness into account, the high beam is only reliably activated outside built-up areas.

[0010] Lane markings can be detected using cameras already installed on the vehicle. In particular, cameras that can record the lane markings to the right and left of the vehicle can be used. In this case, only one lane marking on the right side of the vehicle can be examined. In another version, multiple lane markings across the entire roadway can be examined, including markings on the opposite lane or center line.

[0011] Preferably, the target length can be less than 60 m. This length has been shown to be a limiting range for determining the threshold for the ambient illumination level. Accordingly, if a lane marking less than 60 m long is detected, the vehicle can be notified that the high beams can be activated. This can be done automatically.

[0012] According to a very advantageous development of the concept, the target length can be measured from the vehicle. Consequently, the distance between the ego vehicle and the detected lane marking at the maximum distance can be measured.

[0013] According to an advantageous embodiment, the target length can be measured in the direction of vehicle movement on the road. In particular, the road layout and GPS data can be included. This ensures a reliable prediction and assignment of the lane marking to the actual lane, particularly in situations involving intersections or branching roads.

[0014] A further advantageous embodiment can provide for deactivation of the high beam based on the detection of streetlights. If the lane marking is already illuminated by the high beam, it can be seen within a range of, for example, 150 m in front of the vehicle. Deactivation of the high beam solely by detecting the length of a lane marking is therefore less reliable than deactivation based on detection based on the presence of streetlights.

[0015] According to an advantageous embodiment, it can be provided that a sensitivity of the detection of the lane marking can be adjusted depending on a wet or dry road, whereby the method can be optimized.

[0016] According to a very advantageous development of the concept, the collected data can be stored in a cloud and made available to other vehicles. A lane detection range can be stored in the cloud. This can be done in particular in combination with the storage of a time and / or a weather condition, such as rain / dry / wet.

[0017] Further advantageous embodiments of the method according to the invention also emerge from the exemplary embodiment which is illustrated in more detail below with reference to the figure.

[0018] It shows: Fig. 1 an embodiment of the method applied to a vehicle.

[0019] In the presentation of the Fig. 1 shows a possible embodiment of method 1. Method 1 is designed to control the high beam on a vehicle 2, wherein the high beam can be controlled depending on the lighting of a road 3. In the situation shown, vehicle 2 is moving along road 3 in the right lane. With the help of sensors, in particular with the help of cameras already installed on the vehicle, the visible lane marking in front of the vehicle can be detected. The length of the detected lane marking can be used to determine the lighting situation in the area surrounding vehicle 2. If the length of the detected lane marking falls below a target length, the high beam is activated.

[0020] The target length is represented by the two arrows. The target length is preferably the distance between the ego vehicle 2 and the maximum distance and the most visible lane marking. This depends on the street lighting. In particular, distances less than 60 m indicate that street 3 is not or insufficiently illuminated. Distances greater than 60 m, for example, can only be measured if the street is actively illuminated. Consequently, the limit for the target length can be 60 m.

[0021] The method according to the invention provides a robust detection of an illuminated street, which offers advantages over the mere detection of street lamps. QUOTES CONTAINED IN THE DESCRIPTION
