Description

[0001] The technical field relates generally to storage compartments in vehicles and, more specifically, to adjustable storage devices that can be used to divide the space within the storage compartment and thereby enable the storage of objects of different shapes and sizes.

[0002] Modern vehicles include various storage features throughout the cabin. For example, vehicle doors typically include a storage compartment that extends along a lower portion of the inside of the door. Such storage compartments may be formed in the molded door panel. These storage compartments can vary in size and shape depending on the vehicle and design. Typically, one or more walls are formed within the storage compartment to subdivide the storage compartment and facilitate the storage of smaller items. In many examples, such walls define a cup holder designed to hold a bottle or mug. While these walls are convenient and often desired by end users, they subdivide the storage compartment and thus reduce the maximum possible size of items that can be stored within. For example, a cup holder in the storage compartment can reduce the remaining space within the storage compartment to such an extent that an umbrella that would otherwise fit without the cup holder no longer fits.

[0003] DE 20 2020 100 020 U1 describes a device for holding an object, comprising: a guide track; a belt, a first holder at a first end of the belt, wherein the first holder slides along the guide track; a second holder at a second end of the belt, wherein the second holder slides along the guide track; and a pretensioning element that maintains tension on the belt.

[0004] DE 10 2008 006 700 A1 describes a storage system for a passenger compartment of a vehicle, comprising a storage compartment configured for use in the passenger compartment. The storage compartment comprises a first surface and a second surface that can be adjustably positioned relative to the first surface, wherein a cavity is defined between the two surfaces. A receiving element that can be moved between a stored position and at least one extended position is arranged in the cavity and cooperates with the storage compartment. The receiving element cooperates with the second surface to removably secure a container in the cavity when the receiving element is in the at least one extended position.

[0005] US 2013 / 0 126 696 A1 describes a support device. The support device comprises a belt whose active length is variable, the belt supporting an accessory against a bearing element. The device comprises a rail running along the belt between two ends, the rail being attached to the wall, and a sliding element sliding along the rail, the sliding element including a passage into which the belt is to be inserted. The device comprises an adjustment device for adjusting the active length of the belt. The belt can be extended relative to the adjustment device between a retracted configuration in which the active length is minimal and an extended configuration in which the active length is maximal. The adjustment device comprises an element for returning the belt to its retracted configuration.

[0006] It may be considered an object to provide storage devices for vehicles that facilitate the storage of objects of different shapes and sizes. Furthermore, it may be considered an object to provide storage devices that are adjustable to accommodate objects of different shapes and sizes.

Fig. 1 is a functional block diagram of a vehicle according to an example; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a door of the vehicle of Fig. 1 according to an example; Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional view of a storage compartment of the door of Fig. 2, which shows an adjustable storage device according to an example; Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the storage compartment of Fig. 2 and Fig. 3, which shows the adjustable storage device in a deployed configuration according to an example; Fig. 5 is an enlarged view of one end of the adjustable storage device of the Fig. 3 and Fig. 4 according to an example; Fig. 6 is a flowchart showing a method for installing an adjustable storage device according to an example; and Fig. 7 is a flowchart illustrating a method of storing an object using an adjustable storage device according to an example.

[0027] Fig. 1 shows a vehicle 10 according to one example. In certain examples, the vehicle 10 comprises an automobile. The vehicle 10 includes one or more doors 24, each having an adjustable storage device 100 for adjusting a storage compartment 28 within the vehicle 10. In various examples, the vehicle 10 may be any of a variety of different types of automobiles, such as a sedan, station wagon, truck, or sport utility vehicle (SUV), and may have two-wheel drive (2WD) (i.e., rear-wheel drive or front-wheel drive), four-wheel drive (4WD), or all-wheel drive (AWD), and / or various other types of vehicles or mobile platforms in certain examples.

[0028] As in Fig. 1, the example vehicle 10 generally includes a chassis 12, a body 14, front wheels 16, and rear wheels 18. The body 14 is disposed on the chassis 12 and substantially encloses components of the vehicle 10. The body 14 and the chassis 12 may together form a frame. Wheels 16-18 are each rotatably connected to the chassis 12 near a corner of the body 14. The vehicle 10 further includes a propulsion system 20, a transmission system 22, and one or more doors 24. The propulsion system 20 includes an internal combustion engine and / or a motor, such as an internal combustion engine (e.g., a gasoline or diesel-powered internal combustion engine), an electric motor (e.g., a 3-phase alternating current (AC) motor), or a hybrid system including more than one type of internal combustion engine and / or motor. The transmission system 22 is configured to transmit the power of the drive system 20 to the wheels 16-18 according to selectable gear ratios. According to various examples, the transmission system 22 may include a continuously variable automatic transmission, a continuously variable transmission, or other suitable transmission.

[0029] With reference to Fig. 2 and with continued reference to Fig. 1, an example of the door 24 is shown in an interior view. For simplicity, it should be noted that the door 24 has a front side 42, a rear side 44, a top side 46, and a bottom side 48. The door 24 may include various components typical of vehicle doors, such as a handle 50, control units 52, and an armrest 54. The door 24 includes a door panel 26 having a storage compartment 28 for storing items. The door panel 26 may comprise various materials. In some examples, the door panel 26 may comprise a molded polymeric material. An opening 30 provides access to the storage compartment 28, which is defined by an outer wall 32, an inner wall 34, a front wall 36, a rear wall 38, and a bottom wall 40. The door panel 26 and the storage compartment 28 are not limited to the examples shown in the figures and may have various sizes and shapes.

[0030] Fig. 3 through 5 include views of the storage compartment 28 illustrating various aspects of the adjustable storage device 100. The adjustable storage device 100 may include a pair of guide rails 112 configured to be mounted within the storage compartment 28. The guide rails 112 may be mounted to various surfaces of the door panel 26. Fig. 3-5, the guide rails 112 are attached, for example, to the outer wall 32 of the storage compartment 28. However, the adjustable storage device 100 is not limited to this position and can also be secured in other positions and / or orientations.

[0031] A flexible strap 110 is disposed between the pair of guide rails 112. In this example, the flexible strap 110 extends along and is aligned with the pair of guide rails 112. The strap 110 can be secured with two or more clamps or clips. Fig. 3-5, the belt 110 is attached to the guide rails 112 with a front clip 114 adjacent a front end 124 of the belt 110, a rear clip 116 adjacent a rear end 126 of the belt 110, and a middle clip 118 disposed between the front clip 114 and the rear clip 116. Each of the front, rear, and middle clips 114, 116, and 118 includes distal ends 130 configured to operatively couple to the pair of guide rails 112, transition portions 132 extending from the distal ends 130 and protruding from a geometric plane defined between the pair of guide rails 112 to provide a space for the strap 110, and an intermediate portion 134 extending between the transition portions 132 and configured to overlie the strap 110.

[0032] In this example, the intermediate portion 134 of the front clip 114 is attached to the front end 124 of the strap 110, and the intermediate portion 134 of the rear clip 116 is attached to the rear end 126 of the strap 110. In contrast, the intermediate portion 134 of the middle clip 118 is not attached to the strap 110, and the middle clip 118 and the strap 110 can move relative to each other.

[0033] The distal ends 130 of one or more of the front, rear, and middle clips 114, 116, and 118 may be adjustable to move and / or transition along the pair of guide rails 112. In some examples, the pair of guide rails 112 and the distal ends 130 of the front, rear, and middle clips 114, 116, and 118 each include a plurality of locking features 122 operatively coupled to enable the front, rear, and middle clips 114, 116, and 118 to be moved or transitioned between two or more fixed positions along the pair of guide rails 112. With such an arrangement, a user can selectively move one or more of the front, rear, and center clips 114, 116, and 118 along the pair of guide rails 112 and hold the front, rear, and center clips 114, 116, and 118 in desired positions along the pair of guide rails 112.

[0034] By moving the front, rear and / or middle clips 114, 116 and 118 along the pair of guide rails 112, the shape of the belt 110 can be adjusted. Fig. For example, Figure 3 shows the strap 110 in a fully extended state such that it lies flat or planar between the pair of guide rails 112. This arrangement is referred to herein as a stowed configuration, with the front clip 114 and the rear clip 116 spaced a maximum distance 149 apart. The stowed configuration may be desirable when the strap 110 is not in use, e.g., when a user wishes to store a relatively large item in the storage compartment 28 without the strap 110 being in the way.

[0035] One or both of the front clip 114 and the rear clip 116 can be moved along the pair of guide rails 112 to reduce the dimension between the front and rear clips 114 and 116. Because the front and rear ends 124 and 126 are attached to the front and rear clips 114 and 116, respectively, portions of the strap 110 are forced outward into the storage compartment 28 when the dimension between the front and rear clips 114 and 116 is reduced. Fig. For example, Figure 4 shows the rear clip 116 disposed adjacent the middle clip 118, causing the strap 110 to bend into a loop shape having a reduced dimension 150 between the front and rear clips 114 and 116 and an expanded dimension 152 between a distal portion of the strap 110 and a surface of the storage compartment 28 to which the pair of guide rails 112 is attached (e.g., the outer wall 32). In some examples, the expanded dimension 152 can be adjusted by movement of one or both of the front and rear clips 114 and 116, and the reduced dimension 150 can be adjusted by movement of the middle clip 118. One or more of the front, rear and / or middle clips 114, 116 and 118 can be moved to adjust the shape and size of the looped portion of the strap 110 extending into the storage compartment 28.Such arrangements are referred to herein as deployed configurations, and the strap 110 may be adjustable between a variety of deployed configurations.

[0036] In various examples, the strap 110 may include features configured to promote flexibility of the strap 110 when transitioning between the stowed configuration and the deployed configurations. For example, the strap 110 may include a plurality of elongated channels or recesses 120 extending in directions between the pair of guide rails 112. Such recesses 120 may reduce compression of the strap 110 onto inner radial portions of the loop defined thereby in the deployed configurations, thereby reducing resistance to bending of the strap 110 and possibly reducing a likelihood of twisting of the strap 110.

[0037] In some examples, the strap 110 may be sufficiently flexible to form the loop shapes in the deployed configurations, but sufficiently rigid to hold an object in contact with it. For example, the strap 110 may be arranged in a deployed configuration, and an object, such as a bottle, may be located within the loop, i.e., between the strap 110 and the outer wall 32. In such an arrangement, the object may rest on the bottom wall 40 and be held in a fixed position by the strap 110 and the outer wall 32. As another example, the strap 110 may be arranged in a deployed configuration, and an object, such as a bottle, may be located adjacent to the strap 110, e.g., between the strap 110, the outer wall 32, the front wall 36, and the inner wall 34.With such an arrangement, the object can rest on the bottom wall 40 and be held in a fixed position by the belt 110, the outer wall 32, the front wall 36 and the inner wall 34.

[0038] In some examples, the pair of guide rails 112 may be configured to be secured within the storage compartment 28 in an arrangement such that the strap 110 is aligned with the bottom wall 40 of the storage compartment 28. Such an arrangement may promote uniform support of items resting on the bottom wall 40 with the strap 110 in the deployed configuration(s).

[0039] The components of the adjustable storage device 100 may comprise or be formed from various materials, such as certain polymeric, metal, ceramic, and / or composite materials. In some examples, the guide rails 112 and the front, rear, and center clips 114, 116, and 118 may be formed from relatively rigid polymeric materials, and the strap 110 may be formed from a relatively flexible polymeric material.

[0040] With reference to Fig. 6 and with continued reference to Fig. 1-5 shows a flowchart of a method 200 for installing an adjustable storage device (e.g., the adjustable storage device 100) in a vehicle (e.g., the vehicle 10) according to various examples. As can be seen from the description, the order of the work steps within the method 200 is not limited to the Fig. 6, but may be performed in one or more varying orders as is possible in accordance with the present description.

[0041] In one example, method 200 may begin at 210.

[0042] At 212, method 200 may include attaching a pair of guide rails within a storage compartment of a door panel of a vehicle door. The storage compartment may be defined by an outer wall, an inner wall, a front wall, a rear wall, and a bottom wall.

[0043] At 214, the method 200 may include disposing a flexible belt aligned with and extending between the pair of guide rails.

[0044] At 216, method 200 may include attaching the flexible strap to the pair of guide rails with at least a first clip and a second clip. In some examples, the first clip is attached to a first end of the flexible strap between the distal ends of the first clip, and the second clip is attached to a second end of the flexible strap between the distal ends of the second strap. The ends of the first clip and / or the second clip may be attached to the pair of guide rails such that the positions of the first clip and / or the second clip are adjustable along the guide rails to transition the flexible strap between a stowed configuration and one or more deployed configurations. In some examples, the flexible strap is planar between the pair of guide rails when in the stowed configuration, and the flexible strap defines a loop extending between the pair of guide rails when in the one or more deployed configurations. The flexible strap is configured, in the deployed configuration, to support an object disposed within the loop and resting on the bottom wall of the storage compartment.

[0045] At 218, method 200 may optionally include securing at least one third clip to the pair of guide rails such that the third clip overlies the flexible strap between the first end and the second end of the strap. In some examples, the position of the third clip along the guide rails may be adjustable to modify a dimension between the third clip and one of the first clip and the second clip.

[0046] The procedure 200 can end at 222.

[0047] With reference to Fig. 7 and with continued reference to Fig. 1-5, a flowchart provides a method 300 for using an adjustable storage device (e.g., adjustable storage device 100) in a vehicle (e.g., vehicle 10) in accordance with various examples. As will be apparent from the description, the order of operations within method 300 is not limited to the Fig. 7, but may be executed in one or more varying orders, as applicable and consistent with the present description.

[0048] In one example, method 300 may begin at 310.

[0049] At 312, method 300 may include moving one or more clips securing a flexible strap to a surface within a storage compartment of the vehicle to transition the flexible strap from a stowed configuration to a deployed configuration. In some examples, in the stowed configuration, the flexible strap lies relatively flat against the surface within the storage compartment, and in the deployed configuration, the flexible strap defines a loop extending from the surface of the storage compartment.

[0050] At 314, method 300 may include holding an object between the strap and the surface while the strap is in the deployed configuration and the object rests on the bottom wall of the storage compartment.

[0051] At 316, method 300 may include moving one or more of the clips to transition the flexible strap from the deployed configuration to the stowed configuration.

[0052] The method 300 may end at 318.

[0053] The adjustable storage devices and methods described herein offer several advantages over certain existing systems and methods. For example, the adjustable storage devices described herein can be used to selectively adjust the segmentation of a storage compartment to accommodate objects of various shapes and sizes.
