AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

The increasing use of high-voltage electrification and higher switching frequencies in automotive applications leads to intensified electromagnetic interference, overwhelming power line filters and causing thermal issues, with current filters operating close to their thermal limits.

Method used

A control device estimates the temperature of a mains filter by determining operating parameters of an inverter, adjusting these parameters to reduce electromagnetic interference and thermal load without the need for temperature sensors, using models and historical data to predict and manage thermal inertia.

Benefits of technology

This method allows precise temperature estimation and proactive adjustment of inverter parameters to prevent overheating, reducing thermal stress on power line filters and maintaining system efficiency.

Abstract

A method for operating a drive unit (10) for a vehicle (70) and a drive unit (10) for a vehicle (70) are provided. The drive unit (10) comprises at least one inverter (12), a line filter (50) associated with the inverter (12) and configured to attenuate electromagnetic interference, an electric motor (14), and a control device (36) coupled to the inverter (12) and the electric motor (14). At least one operating parameter of the inverter (12) is determined or received by the control device (36). The temperature of the line filter (50) is estimated by the control device (36). The estimated temperature of the line filter (50) is compared with a first predefinable temperature threshold value by the control device (36).At least one operating parameter of the inverter (12) is adjusted by the control device (36) if the estimated temperature of the network filter (50) exceeds the first predefinable temperature threshold.
