Description

CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATION

[0001] This application claims priority to and the benefit of Korean Patent Application No. 10-2023-0196250, filed on December 29, 2023. BACKGROUNDTechnical field

[0002] Embodiments relate to a display device. Description of the state of the art

[0003] Image display devices that display various information on a single screen are a key technology in the information and communication age, evolving toward thinner profiles, lighter weight, greater portability, and higher performance. As a result, organic light-emitting display devices, which display images by controlling the amount of light emitted from a light-emitting layer, have emerged as flat-panel display devices that can reduce the disadvantages of cathode-ray tubes (CRTs), such as weight and volume.

[0004] Such organic light-emitting display devices each have polarizers, including a circular polarizer and a linear polarizer, to achieve the blackness of the organic light-emitting display device and to reduce external light reflection, thus improving visibility.

[0005] On the other hand, the operating environments of display devices are becoming increasingly diverse, and even operation in high-temperature or high-humidity environments is becoming more common, and the bezels around the display panel of display devices are becoming increasingly narrow. Therefore, ensuring the reliable operation of display devices in various operating environments is considered an important undertaking.

[0006] However, some displays may exhibit errors or differences in the reflective color tone at the edges of the display depending on the operating environment.

[0007] The description in the related art section should not be considered prior art simply because it is mentioned in or associated with that section. The related art section may contain information describing one or more aspects of the subject technology, and the description in that section does not limit the disclosure. SHORT DESCRIPTION

[0044] Fig. 1 shows a system configuration of a display device 100 according to embodiments.

[0045] Referring to Fig. 1, the display device 100 may include a display panel 110 and a driver circuit for driving the display panel 110 according to embodiments.

[0046] The driver circuit may include a data driver circuit 120 and a gate driver circuit 130, and further include a controller 140 for controlling the data driver circuit 120 and the gate driver circuit 130.

[0047] The display panel 110 may include a substrate SUB and signal lines, such as a plurality of data lines DL and a plurality of gate lines GL, arranged above the substrate SUB. The display panel 110 may include a plurality of subpixels SP connected to the plurality of data lines DL and the plurality of gate lines GL.

[0048] The display panel 110 may include a display area DA in which an image is displayed and a non-display area NDA in which no image is displayed. In the display panel 110, the display area DA may include a plurality of subpixels SP for displaying an image, and the non-display area NDA may include a pad portion to which the drive circuits 120, 130, and 140 can be electrically connected, or on which the drive circuits 120, 130, and 140 can be mounted and connected to integrated circuits, printed circuits, or the like.

[0049] The data driver circuit 120 is a circuit for driving the plurality of data lines DL and can output data signals to the plurality of data lines DL.

[0050] The gate driver circuit 130 is a circuit for driving the plurality of gate lines GL and can output gate signals to the plurality of gate lines GL.

[0051] The controller 140 may supply a data control signal DCS to the data driver circuit 120 to control the operation timing of the data driver circuit 120, and may supply a gate control signal GCS to the gate driver circuit 130 to control the operation timing of the gate driver circuit 130.

[0052] The controller 140 may start scanning according to the timing set for the respective frames, convert externally input image data (or video data) according to a data signal format used by the data driving circuit 120, supply the converted image data Data to the data driving circuit 120, and control data driving at appropriate timings in response to the scanning.

[0053] The controller 140 receives from an external source 150 (e.g., a host system) a plurality of timing signals, such as a vertical synchronization signal VSYNC, a horizontal synchronization signal HSYNC, an input data enable signal DE, and a clock signal CLK, as well as the input image data.

[0054] To control the data driver circuit 120 and the gate driver circuit 130, the controller 140 receives the timing signals, for example, a vertical synchronization signal VSYNC, a horizontal synchronization signal HSYNC, an input data enable signal DE and a clock signal CLK, generates various control signals DCS and GCS and supplies the control signals DCS and GCS to the data driver circuit 120 and the gate driver circuit 130.

[0062] The gate driver circuit 130 may output a gate signal of an on-level voltage or a gate signal of an off-level voltage under the control of the controller 140. The gate driver circuit 130 may sequentially output a gate signal of the on-level voltage to the plurality of gate lines GL to sequentially drive the plurality of gate lines GL.

[0063] The gate driver circuit 130 may be connected to the display panel 110 using a tape-automated bonding (TAB) method, connected to a bonding pad on the display panel 110 using a chip-on-glass (COG) or chip-on-panel (COP) method, or connected to the display panel 110 using a chip-on-film (COF) method. In another example, the gate driver circuit 130 may be a gate-in-panel (GIP) circuit provided in the non-display area NDA of the display panel 110. The gate driver circuit 130 may be disposed above or connected to the substrate SUB. That is, the gate driver circuit 130 may be disposed in the non-display area NDA of the substrate SUB when the gate driver circuit 130 is a GIP circuit. The gate driving circuit 130 may be connected to the substrate SUB if the gate driving circuit 130 is a COG circuit, a COF circuit, or the like.

[0064] On the other hand, at least one driver circuit of the data driver circuit 120 or the gate driver circuit 130 may be arranged in the display area DA.

[0065] For example, the gate driver circuit 130 may be arranged in the display area DA. In this case, the gate driver circuit 130 may be arranged in the entire display area DA or only in a part of the display area DA. The gate driver circuit 130 may be arranged so that it does not overlap the subpixels SP, or it may be arranged so that it overlaps all or part of the subpixels SP.

[0066] In another example, the data driver circuit 120 may be arranged in the display area DA. In this case, the data driver circuit 120 may be arranged in the entire display area DA or only in a portion of the display area DA. The data driver circuit 120 may be arranged so that it does not overlap the subpixels SP, or it may be arranged so that it overlaps all or part of the subpixels SP.

[0067] When a specific gate line GL is selected by the gate driver circuit 130, the data driver circuit 120 can convert the image data Data received from the controller 140 into an analog data voltage and output it to the plurality of lines DL.

[0068] The data driver circuit 120 may be connected to one side (e.g., the upper or lower portion) of the display panel 110. The data driver circuit 120 may be connected to both sides (e.g., the upper or lower portion) of the display panel 110, or to two or more of the four sides of the display panel 110, depending on the driving method, the configuration of the display panel, or the like.

[0069] The gate driver circuit 130 may be connected to one side (e.g., the left or right portion) of the display panel 110. The gate driver circuit 130 may be connected to both sides (e.g., the left and right portions) of the display panel 110, or to two or more of the four sides of the display panel 110, depending on the driving method, the configuration of the display panel, or the like.

[0070] The controller 140 can be: a timing controller used in general display technology, a control device that includes a timing controller and can perform other control functions, a control device that is separate from the timing controller, or a circuit within the control device. The controller 140 can be implemented as a variety of circuits or electronic components, such as an integrated circuit (IC), a field-programmable gate array (FPGA), an application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC), or a processor.

[0071] The controller 140 may be mounted on a printed circuit board (PCB), a flexible printed circuit board (FPC), or the like, and electrically connected to the data driver circuit 120 and the gate driver circuit 130 via the PCB, the FPC, or the like.

[0072] The controller 140 can output and receive signals to and from the data driver circuit 120 via one or more predetermined interfaces. Here, the interfaces can include, for example, a low-voltage differential signaling (LVDS) interface, an embedded point-to-point clock interface (EPI), a serial peripheral interface (SPI), and the like.

[0073] The controller 140 may include a storage medium such as one or more registers.

[0074] Referring to Fig. 1, in the display device 100 according to embodiments, each of the subpixels SP may include an emitting element ED and a subpixel circuit SPC for driving the emitting element ED.

[0075] The sub-pixel circuit SPC may include a plurality of pixel driver transistors for driving the emitting element ED and at least one capacitor. In the present disclosure, the sub-pixel circuit SPC may drive the emitting element ED by supplying a drive current to the emitting element ED at a predetermined time. The emitting element ED may be driven by the drive current to emit light.

[0076] The plurality of pixel driver transistors may include a driver transistor DRT for driving the emitting element ED and a scan transistor SCT that is turned on or off based on a scan signal SC.

[0077] The driver transistor DRT can output a drive current to the emitting element ED.

[0078] The sensing transistor SCT may be configured to control the electrical state of a corresponding node (e.g., a second node N2) in the subpixel circuit SPC or to control the state or operation of the driver transistor DRT in the subpixel circuit SPC.

[0079] The at least one capacitor may comprise a storage capacitor Cst to maintain a constant voltage during a frame.

[0080] To drive the subpixel SP, a data signal VDATA, which is an image signal, a scan signal SC, which is a gate signal, and the like can be supplied to the subpixel SP. Furthermore, a common drive voltage comprising a first common drive voltage VDD and a second common drive voltage VSS can be applied to the subpixel SP to drive the subpixel SP.

[0081] The emitting element ED may comprise a pixel electrode PE, an intermediate layer EL, and a common electrode CE. The intermediate layer EL may be arranged between the pixel electrode PE and the common electrode CE.

[0082] If the emitting element ED is an organic light-emitting device, the intermediate layer EL may comprise an emission layer EML and a common intermediate layer EL_COM. The common intermediate layer EL_COM may comprise a first common intermediate layer COM1 and a second common intermediate layer COM2. The first common intermediate layer COM1 may be arranged between the pixel electrode PE and the emission layer EML and may contain at least one layer (e.g., an organic film). The second common intermediate layer COM2 may be arranged between the emission layer EML and the common electrode CE and may comprise at least one layer (e.g., an organic film).

[0083] In one example, the emission layer EML may be disposed on each of the plurality of subpixels SP. In another example, the emission layer EML may be disposed collectively over the plurality of subpixels SP. The common intermediate layer EL_COM may be disposed collectively over the plurality of subpixels SP.

[0084] The emission layer EML may be arranged in respective emission regions, and the common intermediate layer EL_COM may be arranged jointly over the plurality of emission regions and non-emission regions.

[0085] The pixel electrode PE may be an electrode placed on each of the plurality of subpixels SP, and the common electrode CE may be an electrode common to the plurality of subpixels SP.

[0086] For example, the pixel electrode PE may be an anode and the common electrode CE may be a cathode. In another example, the pixel electrode PE may be a cathode and the common electrode CE may be an anode. In the following example, the pixel electrode PE is an anode and the common electrode CE is a cathode.

[0087] For example, the first common interlayer COM1 of the common interlayer EL_COM may include a hole injection layer HIL, a hole transfer layer HTL, and the like. The second common interlayer COM2 of the common interlayer EL_COM may include an electron transfer layer ETL, an electron injection layer EIL, and the like.

[0088] The hole injection layer can inject holes from the pixel electrode PE into the hole transfer layer, and the hole transfer layer can transport holes to the emission layer EML. The electron injection layer can inject electrons from the common electrode CE into the electron transfer layer, and the electron transfer layer can transport electrons to the emission layer EML.

[0089] For example, the common electrode CE may be electrically connected to a second common drive voltage line VSSL. A second common control voltage VSS, a type of common control voltage, may be applied to the common electrode CE via the second common control voltage line VSSL. The pixel electrode PE may be electrically connected directly or indirectly (via other transistors) to the first node N1 of the drive transistor DRT of each subpixel SP. Hereinafter, the "second common control voltage VSS" may also be referred to as the "ground voltage VSS," and the "second common control voltage line VSSL" may also be referred to as the "ground voltage line VSSL."

[0090] Each of the emitting elements ED may have an overlapping portion of the pixel electrode PE, the emission layer EML in the intermediate layer EL, and the common electrode CE. Each emitting element ED may form a predetermined emission region. For example, the emission region of each emitting element ED may have an overlapping portion of the pixel electrode PE, the emission layer EML in the intermediate layer EL, and the common electrode CE.

[0091] The emitting element ED can be, for example, an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), an inorganic-based light-emitting diode (LED), a quantum dot light-emitting diode, or the like. For example, if the emitting element ED is an organic light-emitting diode (OLED), the intermediate layer EL in the emitting element ED can comprise an organic film containing an organic material.

[0092] The driver transistor DRT may be a driver transistor that supplies a drive current to the emitting element ED. The driver transistor DRT may be connected to the first common drive voltage line VDDL and the emitting element ED.

[0093] The driver transistor DRT may include a first node N1, a second node N2, and a third node N3. The first node N1 may be electrically connected to the emitting element ED, a data signal VDATA may be supplied to the second node N2, and a first common drive voltage VDD from the first common drive voltage line VDDL may be applied to the third node N3.

[0094] In the driver transistor DRT, the second node N2 can be a gate node, the first node N1 can be a source node or a drain node, and the third node N3 can be a drain node or a source node. For simplicity, the following assumes a situation in which the second node N2 is a gate node, the first node N1 is a source node, and the third node N3 is a drain node in the driver transistor DRT.

[0095] The scan transistor SCT, which is used in Fig. 1 may be a switching transistor for transmitting a data signal VDATA, which is an image signal, to the second node N2, which is the gate node of the driver transistor DRT.

[0096] The scanning transistor SCT can be controlled to turn on and off by a scanning signal SC, which is a gate signal applied via the scanning signal line SCL, a type of gate line GL, to control an electrical connection between the second node N2 of the driving transistor DRT and the data line DL. The drain electrode or the source electrode of the scanning transistor SCT can be electrically connected to the data line DL, the source electrode or the drain electrode of the scanning transistor SCT can be electrically connected to the second node N2 of the driving transistor DRT, and the gate electrode of the scanning transistor SCT can be electrically connected to the scanning signal line SCL.

[0097] The storage capacitor Cst may be electrically connected to the first node N1 and the second node N2 of the driver transistor DRT. The storage capacitor Cst may have a first capacitor electrode electrically connected to the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT or corresponding to the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT, and a second capacitor electrode electrically connected to the second node N2 of the driver transistor DRT or corresponding to the second node N2 of the driver transistor DRT.

[0098] The storage capacitor Cst may be an external capacitor intentionally provided outside the driver transistor DRT, rather than a parasitic capacitor (e.g., Cgs, Cgd), which is an internal capacitor between the first node N1 and the second node N2 of the driver transistor DRT.

[0099] Both the driver transistor DRT and the scan transistor SCT can be an n-type transistor or a p-type transistor.

[0100] The display panel 110 may have a top-emission structure or a bottom-emission structure.

[0101] When the display panel 110 has the top-side emission structure, at least a part of the sub-pixel circuit SPC can overlap at least a part of the emitting element ED in the vertical direction. Accordingly, the area of the emission region can be increased and the aperture ratio can be increased.

[0102] When the display panel 110 has the bottom emission structure, the subpixel circuit SPC may not overlap the emitting element ED in the vertical direction.

[0103] The subpixel circuit SPC may have a 2T1 C structure with two transistors DRT and SCT and a capacitor Cst, as shown in Fig. 1, and may in some cases include one or more transistors and / or one or more capacitors.

[0104] Depending on the structure of the subpixel circuit SPC, the type and number of gate signals applied to the subpixel SP and the gate lines connected to the subpixel SP may vary. Furthermore, depending on the structure of the subpixel circuit SPC, the type and number of common control voltages applied to the subpixel SP may vary.

[0105] Since the circuit elements in the respective subpixels SP (in particular, the emitting element ED, which is implemented as an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) with an organic material) are susceptible to external moisture or external oxygen, an encapsulation layer may be disposed on the display panel 110 to prevent external moisture or external oxygen from penetrating the circuit elements (in particular, the emitting element ED). The encapsulation layer may be configured in various shapes to prevent the emitting element ED from coming into contact with moisture or oxygen.

[0106] The display device 100 according to embodiments may be a display device in which the display panel 110 does not inherently emit light. For example, the display device 100 according to embodiments may be a liquid crystal display (LCD) with a backlight unit.

[0107] In another example, the display device 100 according to embodiments may be a self-emissive display device in which the display panel 110 is capable of emitting light itself. For example, the display device 100 according to embodiments may be an organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display, a quantum dot display, a micro-light-emitting diode (micro-LED) display, or the like.

[0108] If the display device 100 according to embodiments is an organic light-emitting diode display device, each of the subpixels SP can have an organic light-emitting diode that independently emits light as an emitting element. If the display device 100 according to embodiments is a quantum dot display device, each of the subpixels SP can have an emitting element embodied as a quantum dot, which is a self-emitting semiconductor crystal. If the display device 100 according to embodiments is a micro-light-emitting diode display device, each of the subpixels SP can have an emitting element embodied as a micro-light-emitting diode, which is a self-emitting semiconductor crystal made of a mineral-based material.

[0109] Fig. 2 shows an exemplary equivalent circuit of a subpixel of the display panel 110 according to embodiments. In the following description, the same or similar features as those described with reference to Fig. 1 described are omitted or described in shortened form.

[0110] With reference to Fig. 2, each of a plurality of subpixels SP arranged on the display panel 110 of the display device 100 according to embodiments may be compared to the Fig. 1 also have a sampling transistor SENT.

[0111] As in Fig. As shown in Figure 2, the sampling transistor SENT can be controlled by a sampling signal SE, which is a type of gate signal, and can be connected to the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT and a reference voltage line RVL. In other words, the sampling transistor SENT can be turned on or off by the sampling signal SE supplied from the sampling signal line SENL, which is another type of gate line GL, and can control the connection between the reference voltage line RVL and the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT.

[0112] The sampling transistor SENT can be turned on by the sampling signal SE, which has a turn-on level voltage, and transmit a reference voltage VREF applied from the reference voltage line RVL to the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT.

[0113] In addition, the sampling transistor SENT can be turned on by the sampling signal SE, which has a turn-on level voltage, and transfer the voltage of the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT to the reference voltage line RVL.

[0114] If the sampling transistor SENT is an n-type transistor, the turn-on voltage of the sampling signal SE may be a high level voltage. If the sampling transistor SENT is a p-type transistor, the turn-on voltage of the sampling signal SE may be a low level voltage.

[0115] The function of the sensing transistor SENT to transfer the voltage of the first node N1 of the driver transistor DRT to the reference voltage line RVL can be used in the control to detect the characteristic values of the subpixel SP. In this case, the voltage transferred to the reference voltage line RVL can be either a voltage for calculating the characteristic values of the subpixel SP or a voltage reflecting the characteristic values of the subpixel SP.

[0116] In the present disclosure, the characteristic values of the subpixel SP may be characteristic values of the driver transistor DRT or the emitting element ED. The characteristic values of the driver transistor DRT may include, for example, the threshold voltage and mobility of the driver transistor DRT. The characteristic values of the emitting element ED may include the threshold voltage of the emitting element ED.

[0117] The sampling transistor SENT may be an n-type transistor or a p-type transistor. For simplicity, the present disclosure assumes that the sampling transistor SENT is an n-type transistor.

[0118] The scan signal line SCL and the sense signal line SENL may be different gate lines GL. In this case, the scan signal SC and the sense signal SE may be separate gate signals, and the on-off timing of the scan transistor SCT and the on-off timing of the sense transistor SENT in a subpixel SP may be independent. That is, the on-off timing of the scan transistor SCT and the on-off timing of the sense transistor SENT in a subpixel SP may be the same or different.

[0119] In contrast, the scan signal line SCL and the sampling signal line SENL may be the same gate line GL. That is, the gate node of the scan transistor SCT and the gate node of the sampling transistor SENT in one subpixel SP may be connected to a single gate line GL. In this case, the scan signal SC and the sampling signal SE may be the same gate signal, and the on-off timing of the scan transistor SCT and the on-off timing of the sampling transistor SENT in the one subpixel SP may be the same.

[0120] Fig. 3 is an example plan view showing a part of the display area of the display device 100 according to embodiments. In the following description, the same or similar features as those shown in the Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 described are omitted or described in shortened form.

[0121] With reference to Fig. 3, according to embodiments, the display device 100 may include a plurality of emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3 and a non-emission region NEA surrounding the plurality of emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3.

[0122] For example, according to embodiments, the display device 100 may have a first emission region EA1, a second emission region EA2, and a third emission region EA3 to emit different colors of light.

[0123] The first emission area EA1 may be a red emission area, the second emission area EA2 may be a green emission area, and the third emission area EA3 may be a blue emission area.

[0124] In addition, Fig. 3 illustrates a structure in which the first to third emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3 emitting different colors of light are provided in the display region of the display device 100, but embodiments may also include a structure in which the display region has four or more emission regions emitting different colors of light.

[0125] As in Fig. 3, the planar surface of at least one emission region of the first to third emission regions EA1, EA2 and EA3 may differ from the planar surface of the remaining emission regions.

[0126] For example, the area of the third emission region EA3 may be larger than the area of the first and second emission regions EA1 and EA2. Furthermore, the area of the second emission region EA2 may be larger than the area of the first emission region EA1.

[0127] In this way, by designing the emission areas EA1, EA2 and EA3 in different colors with different areas, the different lifetimes, the different transmissivity properties and the different reflectivity properties of the emitting elements arranged in the corresponding emission areas EA1, EA2 and EA3 can be taken into account in order to achieve optimal efficiency.

[0128] In particular, the lifetime of the emitting element that emits blue light (or blue-emitting element) may be shorter than the lifetime of the emitting element that emits red light (or red-emitting element) and the emitting element that emits green light (or green-emitting element). To compensate for this, the area of the blue emitting region may be larger than the area of the red emitting region and the area of the green emitting region.

[0129] Embodiments may include a color filter disposed over the substrate to reduce external light reflectivity.

[0130] In this case, generally, a red color filter can be arranged in the area corresponding to the red emission area, a green color filter can be arranged in the area corresponding to the green emission area, and a blue color filter can be arranged in the area corresponding to the blue emission area.

[0131] In such a structure, the green-emitting element has a longer lifetime than the blue-emitting element, but if the area of the green emission region where the green color filter is arranged is reduced, the light transmission efficiency may be reduced, which is problematic. However, if the area of the green emission region is increased while taking the transmission efficiency into account, the reflection visibility of the display device may exhibit a greenish characteristic, that is, a green tint.

[0132] On the other hand, color filters are usually colored with colorants, such as solvent-soluble dyes or solvent-insoluble pigments present as dispersed particles. Phthalocyanine-based compounds, in particular, are commonly used as green pigments for green color filters.

[0133] Phthalocyanine-based compounds used as green pigments have a structure in which a central metal (e.g., copper (Cu)) is bonded to a molecule in the form of a metal complex. When light is directed onto a green color filter containing a phthalocyanine-based compound in operating environments with high temperatures and / or high humidity, photocatalytic electron transfer can occur, in which the central metal and water in the phthalocyanine-based compound molecule undergo an oxidation-reduction reaction and generate oxygen gas. If the hydration is interrupted in this situation, a hydrogen bond can form with the intermolecular water in the phthalocyanine compound, resulting in a new absorption peak within the green transmission wavelength. In addition, the oxidation-reduction reaction can be reactivated during rehydration and produce oxygen gas.

[0134] Moisture that penetrates from the outside may be trapped by the encapsulation layer under the color filter and the cover window above the color filter, and may remain in the central portion of the display area for a longer period of time. As a result, a luminance difference may occur between the central portion and the edges of the display area due to light / water reactions of the central metal in the molecules of the phthalocyanine-based compound used as the green pigment. The luminance difference between the central portion of the display area and the edges of the display area may lead to defects at the edges of the display area (hereinafter also referred to as "edge defects").

[0135] In the display device 100 according to embodiments, reflection visibility can be improved and edge defects can be reduced or prevented by applying the color filter composition containing a dye and a pigment to the color filters arranged on the red-emitting element and the green-emitting element.

[0136] Although in Fig. 3, the non-emission region NEA of the display device 100 may have a plurality of signal lines and overlap circuits desired for driving the emitting elements arranged in the plurality of emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3.

[0137] Furthermore, the circuits for driving the plurality of emitting elements of the display device 100 according to embodiments may overlap the plurality of emitting regions EA1, EA2, and EA3 and the non-emitting region NEA.

[0138] The structure of the display device 100 according to embodiments will be described below with reference to Fig. 4 in detail. The following description describes the features that are related to the Fig. 1 to 3 are identical or similar to the features described, are omitted or described in abbreviated form.

[0139] Fig. 4 shows an example cross-sectional view along the line II' of Fig. 3.

[0140] With reference to Fig. 4, the display device 100 may include a plurality of subpixels SP1, SP2, and SP3 and a plurality of emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3 in a display region DA, according to embodiments.

[0141] The display device 100 according to embodiments may include a first subpixel SP1, a second subpixel SP2, and a third subpixel SP3. The first subpixel SP1 may include a first emission region EA1, the second subpixel SP2 may include a second emission region EA2, and the third subpixel SP3 may include a third emission region EA3.

[0142] The first emission region EA1, the second emission region EA2, and the third emission region EA3 may be regions that emit different colors of light. For example, the first emission region EA1 may be a region where red (R) light is emitted, the second emission region EA2 may be a region where green (G) light is emitted, and the third emission region EA3 may be a region where blue (B) light is emitted, but embodiments are not limited thereto.

[0143] In this case, light emitted from a first emission layer 222a of a first emitting element 220a arranged in the first emission region EA1, light emitted from a second emission layer 222b of a second emitting element 220b arranged in the second emission region EA2, and light emitted from a third emission layer 222c of a third emitting element 220c arranged in the third emission region EA3 may have different colors. Red (R) light may be emitted from the first emission layer 222a, green (G) light may be emitted from the second emission layer 222b, and blue (B) light may be emitted from the third emission layer 222c, but embodiments are not limited thereto.

[0144] As in Fig. 4, the display device 100 according to embodiments may include a substrate 210, the emitting elements 220a, 220b and 220c, an encapsulation layer 240, touch electrodes 242, a light blocking layer 252a, 252b and 252c, and color filters 253a, 253b and 253c.

[0145] The substrate 210 may comprise an insulating material. The substrate 210 may be a glass substrate, a resin, a flexible polymer film, a plastic substrate, or the like. The flexible polymer film may be made of, for example, any of the following materials: polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polycarbonate (PC), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), polyethylene naphthalate (PEN), polyethersulfone (PES), cyclic olefin copolymer (COC), triacetyl cellulose (TAC) film, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) film, polyimide (PI) film, and polystyrene (PS), which are only exemplary and not necessarily limited thereto. The substrate 210 may be, for example, a polyimide (PI) substrate. The substrate 210 may have a single-layer or multi-layer structure.

[0146] A thin-film transistor layer (not shown) may be disposed over the substrate 210. The thin-film transistor layer (not shown) may be a layer on which thin-film transistors for driving the emitting elements 220a, 220b, and 220c are located. Each of the thin-film transistors may include an active layer, a gate electrode, a source electrode, and a drain electrode.

[0147] The emitting elements 220a, 220b, and 220c may be disposed above the substrate 210. The emitting elements 220a, 220b, and 220c may be disposed above the thin-film transistor layer (not shown) and electrically connected to the thin-film transistors of the thin-film transistor layer (not shown) for driving them.

[0148] The emitting element may include a first electrode, an emitting layer, and a second electrode. For example, the first emitting element 220a may include a first electrode 221a, a first emitting layer 222a, and a second electrode 223a; the second emitting element 220b may include a first electrode 221b, a second emitting layer 222b, and a second electrode 223b; and the third emitting element 220c may include a first electrode 221c, a third emitting layer 222c, and a second electrode 223c.

[0149] First electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c of the emitting elements 220a, 220b, and 220c may be disposed above the substrate 210. The first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c may be electrically connected to source electrodes or drain electrodes of the thin-film transistors located in the thin-film transistor layer (not shown).

[0150] The first electrodes 221a, 221b and 221c are in Fig. 4, each is illustrated with a single-layer structure, but embodiments are not limited thereto. For example, the first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c may each have a multi-layer structure consisting of two or more layers.

[0151] Each of the first electrodes 221a, 221b and 221c may include a reflective electrode.

[0152] For example, when each of the first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c has a single-layer structure, the first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c may be reflective electrodes comprising a reflective conductive material.

[0153] For example, if the first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c have a multi-layer structure, at least one layer may be a reflective electrode comprising a reflective conductive material. Furthermore, the remaining layer(s) that are not a reflective electrode may be a layer of transparent or translucent conductive material.

[0154] A bank 230 may be disposed over the substrate 210.

[0155] Bank 230 may be arranged to overlap a portion of the upper surfaces of first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c. Bank 230 may be arranged to expose a portion of the upper surfaces of first electrodes 221a, 221b, and 221c. Bank 230 may have open areas corresponding to emitting elements 220a, 220b, and 220c.

[0156] The bank 230 may define the emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3 and the non-emission region NEA in the display region DA of the display device 100. For example, a part of the display region DA in which the bank 230 is arranged may be the non-emission region NEA, and a part of the display region DA in which the bank 230 is not arranged may be the emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3.

[0157] Bank 230 may include a black component. Bank 230 may be made of an opaque, colored organic material, for example. Bank 230 may be a black bank made of a black-colored organic material, but the present disclosure is not so limited.

[0158] The emission layers 222a, 222b and 222c of the emitting elements 220a, 220b and 220c may be arranged above the first electrodes 221a, 221b and 221c.

[0159] The emission layers 222a, 222b and 222c may be arranged on the upper surfaces of the first electrodes 221a, 221b and 221c exposed by the bank 230.

[0160] The emission layers 222a, 222b and 222c are in Fig. 4, each is shown with a single-layer structure, but embodiments are not limited thereto. Each of the emission layers 222a, 222b, and 222c may comprise a plurality of layers of organic material.

[0161] These emission layers 222a, 222b, and 222c may emit at least one color selected from red (R), green (G), and blue (B). However, embodiments are not limited thereto.

[0162] The second electrodes 223 (223a, 223b and 223c) of the emitting elements 220a, 220b and 220c may be arranged above the substrate 210 on which the emission layers 222a, 222b and 222c are arranged.

[0163] The second electrodes 223a, 223b and 223c may comprise a transparent conductive material or a semi-transparent material.

[0164] The second electrodes 223a, 223b and 223c are in Fig. 4, each of which has a single-layer structure, but embodiments are not limited thereto. The second electrodes 223a, 223b, and 223c may each have a multi-layer structure comprising two or more layers.

[0165] The encapsulation layer 240 may be disposed over the second electrodes 223a, 223b and 223c.

[0166] The encapsulation layer 240 is in Fig. 4 with a single-layer structure, but embodiments are not limited thereto.

[0167] For example, the encapsulation layer 240 may include a first encapsulation layer disposed over the second electrodes 223a, 223b, and 223c, a second encapsulation layer disposed over the first encapsulation layer, and a third encapsulation layer disposed over the second encapsulation layer. The first and third encapsulation layers may comprise an inorganic insulating material, and the second encapsulation layer may comprise an organic insulating material.

[0168] Such an encapsulation layer 240 can prevent the penetration of moisture and oxygen into the emitting elements 220a, 220b and 220c.

[0169] A touch sensor component may be disposed over the encapsulation layer 240.

[0170] The touch sensor device may include the touch electrodes 242 and further insulating film components such as a sensor buffer layer 241, a sensor interlayer insulating layer 243, and a sensor passivation layer 244.

[0171] The sensor buffer layer 241 may be disposed over the encapsulation layer 240. The touch electrodes 242 may be disposed over the sensor buffer layer 241, and the sensor interlayer insulation layer 243 may be disposed over the touch electrodes 242.

[0172] The sensor buffer layer 241 and the sensor interlayer insulating layer 243 may be arranged to extend not only to the display area DA of the display device 100 but also to the non-display area NDA.

[0173] The touch electrodes 242 may include touch sensor metals and bridge metals.

[0174] The touch-sensor metals may form a single touch electrode 242 (or a single touch electrode row) and may be arranged in a network and electrically connected to each other. Some touch-sensor metals and other touch-sensor metals may be electrically connected by bridge metals to form a single touch electrode 242 (or a single touch electrode row).

[0175] The touch electrodes 242 may be arranged so that they do not overlap the plurality of emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3.

[0176] That is, the touch electrodes 242 may be arranged in an area that overlaps the bank 230.

[0177] The sensor interlayer insulating layer 243 may be disposed over the touch electrodes 242.

[0178] The sensor passivation layer 244 may be disposed over the sensor interlayer insulation layer 243.

[0179] The light blocking layer 252a, 252b and 252c with open areas can be arranged over the sensor passivation layer 244.

[0180] As in Fig. 4, the light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may overlap the non-emission region NEA. For example, the light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may be arranged to overlap the bank 230. The light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may be arranged to overlap the touch electrodes 242. The light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may be arranged to overlap the bank 230 and the touch electrodes 242. The open regions of the light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may overlap the first to third emission regions EA1, EA2, and EA3.

[0181] The light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may include a black component. The light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c may be formed, for example, from an opaque colored organic material and may have a single-layer structure or a multi-layer structure.

[0182] The color filters 253a, 253b, 253c may be arranged in open areas of the light blocking layer 252a, 252b and 252c.

[0183] As in Fig. As shown in Figure 4, the first color filter 253a may overlap the first emission region EA1 and may also overlap a portion of the non-emission region NEA surrounding the first emission region EA1. The second color filter 253b may overlap the second emission region EA2 and may also overlap a portion of the non-emission region NEA surrounding the second emission region EA2. The third color filter 253c may overlap the third emission region EA3 and may also overlap a portion of the non-emission region NEA surrounding the third emission region EA3.

[0184] The first emitting element 220a, arranged in the first emission region EA1, can emit red (R) light. The second emitting element 220b, arranged in the second emission region EA2, can emit green (G) light. The third emitting element 220c, arranged in the third emission region EA3, can emit blue (B) light.

[0185] As described above, enlarging the second emission region EA2, from which green (G) light is emitted, can cause the reflection visibility of the display device to exhibit a greenish characteristic, which is problematic. Furthermore, in phthalocyanine-based compounds used as green pigments in green color filters, a luminance difference between the central portion of the display region and the edges of the display region can occur due to light / water reactions of the central metal in the molecule, resulting in edge defects of the display region.

[0186] In the display device 100 according to embodiments, the reflection visibility of the display can be improved and the edge defects of the display device can be prevented or reduced by applying a color filter composition containing a dye and a pigment to the color filters arranged on the red-emitting element and the green-emitting element, respectively.

[0187] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a color filter composition. That is, the first color filter 253a, which is arranged above the first emitting element 220a and emits red (R) light, and the second color filter 253b, which is arranged above the second emitting element 220b and emits green (G) light, may have the same color filter composition.

[0188] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b containing the color filter composition may have a first absorption peak wavelength and a second absorption peak wavelength.

[0189] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have the first absorption peak wavelength in a range between 430 nm and 480 nm. The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have the second absorption peak wavelength in a range between 580 nm and 600 nm.

[0190] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have the first absorption peak wavelength in a range between 430 nm and 480 nm and the second absorption peak wavelength in a range between 580 nm and 600 nm.

[0191] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a transmittance of 10% or less for an absorption peak in the range between 430 nm and 480 nm. The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a transmittance of 10% or less for an absorption peak in the range between 580 nm and 600 nm.

[0192] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a transmittance of 10% or less for an absorption peak in the range between 430 nm and 480 nm and a transmittance of 10% or less for an absorption peak in the range between 580 nm and 600 nm.

[0193] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a first absorption peak wavelength in the range between 430 nm and 480 nm, and the transmissivity of the absorption peak in the range of the first absorption peak wavelength may be 10% or less.

[0194] The first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b may have a second absorption peak wavelength in a range between 580 nm and 600 nm, and the transmissivity of the absorption peak in the range of the second absorption peak wavelength may be 10% or less.

[0195] The color filter composition may comprise a dye and a pigment.

[0196] The color filter composition may contain more than 0 wt% but not more than 20 wt% of the dye, based on the total weight of dye and pigment. If the color filter composition contains less than or equal to 0 wt% of the dye, i.e., no dye, the color filter may not have a second absorption peak wavelength in the range between 580 nm and 600 nm, and defects may occur at the edges. A content of more than 20 wt% of the dye may increase power consumption.

[0197] The dye contained in the color filter composition can be represented by the following formula 1.

[0198] Formula 1 is described below.

[0199] Formula 1 belongs to the porphyrin family, where R 1 to R 8 can be independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a halogen atom, a cyano group, an amino group, a nitro group, an amide group, a carbonyl group, a hydroxyl group, a sulfonyl group, a C1-C 30 -alkyl group, a C2-C 30 -alkenyl group, a C2-C 30 -alkynyl group, a C1-C 30 -alkoxy group, a C6-C 50 -aryl group and a C2-C 50 -Heteroaryl group.

[0200] In R 1 to R 8of formula 1, the alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, aryl and heteroaryl groups may each independently be further substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of deuterium, tritium, a nitro group, a halogen, a cyano group, an amino group, a C1-C 20 -alkyl group, a C2-C 20 -alkenyl group, a C2-C 20 -alkynyl group, a C1-C 20 -alkoxy group, a C6-C 20 -aryl group, a deuterium-substituted C6-C 20 -aryl group and a C2-C 20 -Heteroaryl group.

[0201] In Formula 1, the four central nitrogen atoms (N) must not be metal-bonded. This means that the dye represented by Formula 1 according to embodiments does not contain a central metal in the molecule. Because the molecule does not contain a central metal, the light / water reaction does not occur, resulting in uniform luminance between the central portion and the edges of the display area. Accordingly, the occurrence of edge defects of the display area can be reduced or prevented.

[0202] The display device 100 according to embodiments can improve reflection visibility and reduce edge defects of the display device by applying the color filter composition containing the dye represented by Formula 1 and a pigment to the first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b arranged on the red and green emitting elements 220a and 220b.

[0203] The pigment contained in the color filter composition may be a yellow pigment. For example, the yellow pigment may be at least one selected from the group consisting of CI Pigment Yellow 11, 13, 24, 55, 108, 109, 110, 119, 138, 139, 150, 151, 154, 167, 168, 180, 185, and 231.

[0204] The display device 100 according to embodiments can improve reflection visibility and reduce or prevent edge defects of the display device by applying the color filter composition comprising the dye represented by Formula 1 and a yellow pigment to the first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b arranged on the red and green emitting elements 220a and 220b.

[0205] The pigment contained in the color filter composition can be represented by Formula 2 below.

[0206] Formula 2 is described below.

[0207] Formula 2 belongs to the isoindoline family, where R 11 to R 14 can be independently selected from the group consisting of hydrogen, a halogen atom, a cyano group, an amino group, a nitro group, an amide group, a carbonyl group, a hydroxyl group, a sulfonyl group, a C1-C 30 -alkyl group, a C2-C 30 -alkenyl group, a C2-C 30 -alkynyl group, a C1-C 30 -alkoxy group, a C6-C 50 -aryl group and a C2-C 50 -Heteroaryl group.

[0208] In R 11 to R 14 of formula 2, the alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, alkoxy, aryl and heteroaryl groups may each independently be further substituted with one or more substituents selected from the group consisting of deuterium, tritium, a nitro group, a halogen, a cyano group, an amino group, a C1-C 20 -alkyl group, a C2-C20 -alkenyl group, a C2-C 20 -alkynyl group, a C1-C 20 -alkoxy group, a C6-C 20 -aryl group, a deuterium-substituted C6-C 20 -aryl group and a C2-C 20 -Heteroaryl group.

[0209] The display device 100 according to embodiments can improve reflection visibility and reduce or prevent edge defects of the display device by applying the color filter composition containing the dye represented by Formula 1 and the pigment represented by Formula 2 to the first color filter 253a and the second color filter 253b arranged on the red and green emitting elements 220a and 220b.

[0210] A passivation layer 260 may be disposed over the color filters 253a, 253b, and 253c. The passivation layer 260 may be disposed over the color filters 253a, 253b, and 253c and the light-blocking layer 252a, 252b, and 252c, and may extend not only to the display area DA but also to the non-display area NDA of the display device 100.

[0211] An adhesion layer 270 and a cover window 280 may be disposed over the color filters 253a, 253b, and 253c. The adhesion layer 270 and the cover window 280 may be disposed over the passivation layer 260.

[0212] The adhesion layer 270 may be a transparent adhesion layer 270. In this case, the adhesion layer 270 may be an optically clear adhesive (OCA) or an optically clear resin (OCR).

[0213] Furthermore, the adhesion layer 270 may have a color, e.g., black. If the adhesion layer 270 has a black color, insulating, black-colored particles may be dispersed in the OCA or OCR. The black-colored adhesion layer 270 may serve to reduce external light reflection from the display device 100 that does not include a polarizer.

EXAMPLES

[0277] The display device according to embodiments will be described in more detail below using examples, wherein the embodiments are not limited to the following examples. Comparison example 1

[0278] A green color filter was prepared using a green pigment containing a phthalocyanine compound with copper (Cu), which is represented by the reference compound below. [Comparison connection] Example 1

[0279] A color filter was formed using a color filter composition, the color filter composition comprising: a dye represented by an embodiment of the following compound, wherein R 1 to R 8 in formula 1 are CI, and CI Pigment Yellow 185 as pigment, containing 2 wt.% of the dye represented by formula 1. [Embodiment Connection] Example 2

[0280] A color filter was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1 except that 5 wt% of the dye represented by the embodiment compound was contained. Example 3

[0281] A color filter was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1 except that 17 wt% of the dye represented by the embodiment compound was contained. Example 4

[0282] A color filter was prepared in the same manner as in Example 1 except that 20 wt% of the dye represented by the embodiment compound was contained. Color characteristic evaluation

[0283] Color shift and luminance were measured at the center and edge of the display area, respectively.

[0284] In the following Table 1, ΔGx and ΔGy represent color shifts of the light through the color filters and ΔGY represents luminance shifts of the light through the color filters. Table 1 Position ΔGx ΔGy ΔGY% Rand-Fehler Vgl. Bsp. 1 Zentrum -0,003 -0,039 -6% aufgetreten Rand -0,001 -0,023 1% Bsp. 1 Zentrum -0,002 -0,002 3% nicht aufgetreten Rand -0,003 -0,002 3% Bsp. 2 Zentrum 0,001 -0,002 -3% nicht aufgetreten Rand 0,000 -0,003 -2% Bsp. 3 Zentrum 0,002 -0,002 -1% nicht aufgetreten Rand 0,001 -0,002 -1% Bsp. 4 Zentrum 0,001 -0,001 3% nicht aufgetreten Rand 0,001 -0,002 1%

[0285] As can be seen from Table 1, Examples 1 to 4, which were prepared using color filter compositions containing a dye and a pigment according to the embodiments, show less color shifts and luminance deviations in the center and at the edges of the display area than Comparative Example 1 in which a compound based on phthalocyanine with copper (Cu) was used in a green color filter.

[0286] Furthermore, it can be seen that Comparative Example 1 has a luminance difference between the center and the edge of the display area, resulting in an edge defect in the display area, while Examples 1 to 4 have a smaller luminance difference between the center and the edge of the display area, resulting in no edge defect in the display area.

[0287] In other words, since each of the color filters according to embodiments does not contain metals in the dye, light / water reactions with the central metal can be prevented, resulting in smaller color and luminance deviations between the center and the edges of the display area.
