[0018] According to a seventh aspect, a retransmission message is provided for transmission from a radio node of a communication network to a wireless device, preferably an Ambient Internet of Things or A-IoT device of the communication network.
[0019] The retransmission message includes a data field that contains at least one of the following: - identification information specifying one or more data units to be retransmitted, - a counter indicating the number of the most recently transmitted consecutive data units to be transmitted again, - resource information that specifies radio resources to be allocated to the wireless device for retransmission, - Random access type information that specifies the type of random access procedure to be performed by the wireless device to access a channel for retransmission, - an access round information that specifies an access round for retransmission, - a reception information that identifies the successfully received data unit(s), - identification information of a last successfully received data unit, - a retransmission indicator that indicates that the retransmission information is not part of paging information provided by a core network node.
[0020] The paging message can be embodied in a data structure comprising one or more data fields. The paging message is preferably transmitted on a paging control channel (PCCH) of the communication network.
[0021] According to an eighth aspect, a data carrier signal is provided that guides the computer program, as defined by the fifth aspect and / or its embodiments, or the message, as defined by the seventh aspect and / or its embodiments.
[0022] The communication network can comprise a wireless network and a core network. The communication network can be configured as a cellular network, preferably according to 3GPP specifications, e.g., 3GPP Release 18 or later. The communication network includes at least one radio node and at least one wireless device, preferably at least one Ambient IoT device. The radio node can be configured as an Ambient IoT device reader, a relay, or an IAB (Integrated Access and Backhaul) node.
[0023] The wireless device can be configured as a low-energy or low-power device. The wireless device can have a peak power consumption of less than 1 mW, preferably less than 500 µW, particularly less than 100 µW, and according to one embodiment less than 10 µW, e.g., approximately 1 µW.
[0024] The wireless device is preferably configured for energy harvesting, thereby utilizing ambient energy sources, such as radio waves, thermal radiation, mechanical vibrations, etc., as a power source. The wireless device may or may not include an energy storage device, such as a battery.
[0025] In particular, the wireless device differs from a reduced-capability device (redcap device), a narrowband IoT (NB-IoT) device, or an enhanced machine-type communication (eMTC) device, for example, due to its lower hardware complexity, lower cost, and / or smaller form factors. Additionally, communication between the wireless device and the radio node may not be controlled by a radio resource control (RRC) layer. Specifically, a hybrid automated retry request (HARQ) procedure may not be used or may not be applicable for communication between the wireless device and the radio node.
[0026] The wireless device can be located on or be part of the following: - an environmental sensor used, for example, in smart buildings, industrial plants and urban infrastructure to enable environmental monitoring and control, - a smart home device to enable remote monitoring and control of residential environments for energy efficiency, security and comfort, - a wearable health and / or fitness tracker to enable personal health and fitness tracking as well as remote patient monitoring in healthcare applications, - an asset tracking device to enable monitoring of the location and status of assets, vehicles and inventory in logistics, transportation and supply chain applications, - an industrial IoT sensor and / or actuator to enable the monitoring and control of machines, devices and processes, - an intelligent agricultural device to enable the optimization of resource use and improvement of crop yields, - a smart city infrastructure unit to enable intelligent street lighting, traffic monitoring, waste management, public safety and environmental monitoring.
[0027] The retransmission information can be understood as a "mini-paging" message or information that is independent of a retransmission request generated by the core network. In contrast, the retransmission information is preferably generated independently of the core network, particularly by a radio node such as a reader of an IoT device. In other words, the retransmission information can be a message for paging one or more devices for retransmission(s) of one or more failed data units, such as one or more segments of a segmented data packet, an entire data packet, or a message.
[0028] Retransmission information can be generated and / or transmitted if at least one failed data unit is detected. Alternatively, retransmission information can be generated and / or transmitted if the number of failed data units is greater than or equal to a failure threshold. A failure can be detected if a data unit is not received within a defined period, which is counted, for example, using a timer. The timer can be initiated based on the allocation of radio resources for data transmission from the wireless device to the radio node.
[0029] The proposed solution reduces latency and improves resource efficiency in A-IoT networks by allowing the base station or relay to request retransmission of only failed data segments. This targeted retransmission approach minimizes bandwidth usage, preserves power for A-IoT devices, and simplifies error handling procedures.
[0030] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the retransmission information is transmitted before the radio node receives a subsequent paging message. Alternatively, the retransmission information is transmitted independently of any potential subsequent paging message. In other words, the retransmission information is transmitted in an interval between two subsequently transmitted paging messages. By transmitting the retransmission information before the next paging message, this embodiment reduces latency and improves efficiency by enabling faster retransmission of lost data units without waiting for the next scheduled paging round.
[0031] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the method further comprises: - Receiving, by the radio node, a subsequent paging message, wherein the retransmission information is inserted or integrated by the radio node into the subsequent paging message.
[0032] This means that the subsequent paging message is supplemented with the retransmission information. This implementation improves efficiency by combining the retransmission request with the subsequent paging message, which reduces signaling overhead and simplifies the communication process.
[0033] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the retransmission information and the subsequent paging message are transmitted in either the current or a subsequent access round. The retransmission information and the subsequent paging message can be transmitted at the beginning of the next access round. Transmitting the retransmission information and the subsequent paging message together, either in the current or the next access round, optimizes communication and reduces latency by enabling immediate or near-immediate action in response to the retransmission request.
[0034] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the method further comprises: - Receiving, by the radio node, a subsequent paging message, wherein the retransmission information is transmitted in a current access round and the subsequent paging message is transmitted in a subsequent access round.
[0035] The subsequent paging message can be transmitted at the beginning of the next access round. Prioritizing the retransmission information by sending it in the current access round minimizes the latency for retransmitting critical data.
[0036] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the method further comprises: - Receiving, by the radio node, configuration information, wherein the configuration information indicates whether the transmission of the retransmission information to the wireless device is enabled or disabled.
[0037] In other words, the configuration information is activation information for enabling or disabling the transmission of the retransmission information.
[0038] Configuration information can be received from a base station, a core network node, or an application / higher layers. This information can be contained in downlink control information (DCI), radio resource control (RRC) signaling for re-establishing the connection between the base station and the user device, a system integration block (SIB), a MAC control element (MAC-CE), or an application layer message. Providing a configurable enable / disable mechanism for retransmitting this information enables flexible A-IoT network management and optimization, adapting to varying network conditions and A-IoT use case requirements.
[0039] According to one embodiment of the first aspect, the failed transmission is detected by the radio node or an intermediate radio node connecting the radio node to the core network node. The intermediate radio node can be a base station, a UE, a relay, or an IAB node. For example, the radio node can be a UE configured as a reader for IoT devices, and the intermediate radio node can be a base station. Enabling failure detection by either the radio node or an intermediate node provides flexibility and robustness, enabling faster identification of transmission failures and quicker initiation of retransmissions.
[0040] According to one embodiment of the first and / or second aspect, the data unit is part of a data packet that is divided by the wireless device into a set of segmented data units, and the retransmission information specifies that only a subset of the segmented data units should be retransmitted. By segmenting data packets and allowing retransmission of only the lost segments, this embodiment minimizes retransmission overhead, saving bandwidth and power, which is particularly advantageous for resource-constrained IoT devices.
[0041] According to one embodiment of the first and / or second aspect, the retransmission information contains at least one of the following: - identification information that specifies the data unit(s) to be retransmitted, - a counter indicating the number of the most recently transmitted consecutive data units to be transmitted again, - resource information that specifies radio resources to be allocated to the wireless device for retransmission, - Random access type information that specifies the type of random access procedure to be performed by the wireless device to access the channel for retransmission, - an access round information that specifies an access round for retransmission, - a reception information that identifies the successfully received data unit(s), - identification information of a last successfully received data unit, - a retransmission indicator that indicates that the retransmission information is not part of paging information provided by the core network node.
[0042] The identification information includes an ID or any other suitable identifier to specify the failed data unit or set of data units for retransmission.
[0043] The counter indicates the number of recently transmitted data units that are to be transmitted again (e.g., a value of 5 indicates the last 5 data units).
[0044] The resource information can specify time and / or frequency radio resources for retransmitting the data unit(s). This information can include a resource index. Devices with a higher number of failed transmissions can be allocated more resources, while devices with a lower number of failed transmissions can be allocated fewer resources.
[0045] The random access type information can specify the type of random access procedure the wireless device should use (e.g., 2-step, 3-step, or other defined procedures). A numeric value or a specific identifier could represent each random access type. The type of random channel access used by the wireless device to retransmit a failed data unit can differ from the type used to initially transmit other data units. For example, retransmission can be conflict-free, while a new transmission can be conflict-based.
[0046] The access round information specifies when the failed data unit(s) should be retransmitted. This can be specified using a flag or another mechanism and can designate a current access round, a next access round, or a specific future access round.
[0047] The reception information may include an identifier or a set of identifiers to indicate the successfully received data unit(s).
[0048] The identification information for the last successfully received data unit can include an ID or other identifier. This identifies, for example, the last correctly received segment.
[0049] A retransmission indicator, such as a flag, distinguishes retransmission information from core network paging information. Preferably, the retransmission indicator identifies the message as a mini-paging message.
[0050] Including fields to identify failed data units, specifying retransmission resources, channel access and timing, and confirming successful reception enables efficient and targeted retransmission of lost data, minimizing overhead and latency in A-IoT networks.
[0051] According to a further aspect of the invention, a (wireless) communication network is provided, comprising at least one (radio) node according to the third aspect or its embodiments and at least one wireless device, preferably at least one IoT device, according to the fourth aspect or its embodiments.
[0052] According to a further aspect of the invention, a method for operating the communication network is provided. The method for operating the communication network comprises the steps of the method according to the first aspect or its embodiments and the steps of the method according to the second aspect or its embodiments.
[0053] The non-volatile, computer-readable medium is preferably designed to store the computer program to be executed by a processor of the first LAN element and / or the second LAN element and / or the communication network. The non-volatile, computer-readable media may include RAM, ROM, EEPROM, and any other persistent storage device. Description of the characters

[0062] According to the first embodiment, the failed transmission can be detected by the base station 16. According to the second embodiment, the failed transmission can be detected by either the base station 16 or the user device 18. Information about the detected failed transmission can be provided from the base station 16 to the user device 18 or vice versa.
[0063] Each radio node 16, 18 is configured to generate a retransmission message based on the detection of a failed data transmission and to transmit this message to the respective A-IoT device 20a, 20b, 20c. This retransmission message specifies at least one data unit to be retransmitted. [0064] The retransmission information can include several fields to enable efficient retransmission. These fields can include, among other things: Data Unit Identifier: This field identifies the specific data unit(s) that require retransmission. It can be an index, a timestamp, or any other suitable identifier. In the case of segmented data packets, this field can identify individual segments or a range of segments.
[0065] Retransmission counter: This field specifies the number of consecutive data units to be retransmitted, starting from the last transmitted data unit. For example, a value of 3 indicates that the last 3 transmitted data units should be retransmitted.
[0066] Resource allocation information: This field provides details about the radio resources allocated for retransmission. It may include a resource index, timeslot allocation, frequency channel assignment, or other relevant parameters. The resources allocated for retransmission may differ from those used for the initial transmission. For example, additional resources might be allocated to devices with a history of failed transmissions.
[0067] Access round indicator: This field specifies the timing of the retransmission and indicates whether the IoT device should retransmit in the current access round, the next access round, or a specific future access round. A simple flag mechanism can be used to transmit this information.
[0068] Reception status information: This field confirms the successful reception of data units. It can contain identifiers of correctly received data units or segments, enabling the A-IoT device to avoid unnecessary retransmissions. It can also identify the last correctly received data unit or segment.
[0069] Retransmission indicator: A dedicated flag or indicator within the retransmission information explicitly distinguishes it from regular paging messages originating from the core network. This allows the A-IoT device to correctly interpret the message and perform the requested retransmission.
[0070] The specific combination and format of these fields can vary depending on the use case, service, and / or application with which the data unit(s) are associated. The goal is to provide the A-IoT device with sufficient information to enable efficient and targeted retransmission while minimizing overhead and latency.
