Description

Field of invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a family of unmanned aerial vehicles and a system of systems, wherein the "family of systems" architecture is integrated into manned and unmanned platforms to perform complex military missions and operations. In particular, a large family of UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) systems is developed, with an unmanned flatbed mother vehicle as a "mother UAV" capable of carrying modules of unmanned sub-aircraft vehicles as a "sub-UAV," and wherein the sub-UAVs carry modules of mini-unmanned aerial vehicles as a "mini-UAV," as well as the systems and mechanisms required to launch and capture sub-UAVs and mini-UAVs on the mother UAV in flight. The "family of systems" is designed to contribute to increasing sixth-generation air dominance and information sovereignty.

[0002] The present invention further enhances the integrated network communications and command signal capabilities by utilizing AI (Artificial Intelligence) systems in the "family of systems" in addition to the existing satellite and remote control technology. Background of the invention

[0003] The present invention is a further development of the previous German utility model No. 20 2013 012 832.1, registration date 8.11.2013 “Combination of unmanned aerial vehicles and the system for use in various applications”, based on PCT / CA2013 / 000941, which was filed on 8 November 2013.

[0004] The previous invention of “combination of unmanned aerial vehicles and the system for use in various applications” includes the mother UAV and three sub-UAVs ejected from the mother UAV, with the sub-UAVs flying autonomously in sequences and in a coordinated manner to specific locations.

[0005] The previous design also includes systems for the sub-UAV elements to return to the flatbed of the mother UAV element and land on the flatbed of the mother UAV element and be secured with the locking mechanism.

[0006] The prior invention further includes integrated network communication systems with which the parent UAV element and the sub-UAV elements communicate with each other using satellite and remote control technology to send and receive operational and command signals between the UAV elements, and also to communicate with the mobile and stationary "data station" elements for the purpose of operating and activating all electronic and mechanical components for the UAV elements to communicate with each other, with all UAV elements flying and performing specific missions.

[0007] The prior invention also encompasses ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) system integration with manned and unmanned systems. The prior invention was designed for multifunctional and multi-purpose applications for civil, commercial, and military purposes.

[0008] The present invention differs from the prior art, including accessibility and rapid access to remote and complex areas that humans and other vehicles cannot reach and where they cannot perform multiple missions. Further specified are autonomous communication systems for communicating with each other, wherein the parent UAV element communicates with the sub-UAV elements and with each other, the sub-UAV element communicates with the mini-UAV elements and with each other, the mini-UAV elements communicate with all UAV elements and with each other (parent UAV element, sub-UAV elements, and mini-UAV elements), and communicate with the mobile and stationary data station elements. The foregoing invention was also designed to provide systems to support all UAV elements, collect data, store data, and transmit the data to the parent UAV element at a later time.

[0009] The previously disclosed invention has several problems, particularly its limited capabilities for executing demanding, complex missions that contribute to the "family of systems" and multifunctional manned and unmanned system platforms for military non-combat and combat missions. In particular, it supports the immediate needs of future sixth-generation fighter jet warfare platforms. This was due to the fact that the parent UAV was designed to carry a maximum of three sub-UAV elements on board.

[0010] This limited carrying capacity of sub-UAV elements would dramatically impact the large-scale “family of systems” operating concept, as well as operational effectiveness, particularly for military combat and non-combat missions.

[0011] The previously designed communications system was designed for a small family of UAV systems, fully integrated with manned, unmanned, and space systems capable of operating at high, medium, and low altitudes to support air-sea and ground operations, as well as to support civil and commercial operations.

[0012] Another problem with the previous design was safety concerns regarding the launch and capture of sub-UAVs onto the parent UAV carrier element. The previous invention was designed to land the sub-UAV elements directly onto the flatbed of the parent UAV element. There was no additional landing strip facility onboard in the design. If, for whatever reason, the first attempt is unsuccessful, the sub-UAV element is at risk of colliding with and causing damage to the parent UAV element. This can also be addressed by the present invention by adding a "runway strip" element capability and the adjustable "landing platform" element, which are attached to the parent UAV.

[0013] Another problem with the previous design was the launch system, where the sub-UAV element was designed to launch from the flatbed of the parent UAV element while other sub-UAV elements were on board. This launch system must be designed with a better safety approach.

[0014] Another problem with the previous design was that no AI (artificial intelligence) communication system was integrated into the "family of systems." Since AI is a new technology, no such technology had been developed at the time of the original invention. Nevertheless, the military recognizes that a family of unmanned systems needs to be improved with an AI integration system for future battlefield scenarios. Summary of the invention

[0015] The present invention relates to a family of unmanned aerial vehicles and a system of systems of the “family of systems” architecture, integrated into manned and unmanned platforms for performing complex military missions and operations.

[0016] An object of the present invention is to develop a large family of UAV systems, with the flatbed unmanned aerial vehicle as the "mother UAV" capable of carrying modules of sub-UAV elements, and the sub-UAV elements carrying modules of mini-UAV elements, wherein the systems and mechanisms are needed to launch and capture sub-UAV elements and "mini-UAV elements" on the mother UAV element in flight.

[0017] Another object of the invention is to build a flying aircraft carrier base similar to a seagoing base and to build an air defense system similar to the "Iron Dome" system in the air with a large number of sub-UAV and mini-UAV elements with varying capabilities and various operational systems, all integrated into fully compatible autonomous systems by a system architecture that supports wide-area coverage for large-scale combat operations. The system is not limited to covering a wide area of the sky; it also covers high, medium, and low altitudes and supports manned and unmanned systems.

[0018] The proposed invention has been modified to address the previous problems in the invention. The first problem is that the previous invention was designed for a small family of systems; the parent UAV element capable of carrying sub-UAV elements was limited to three sub-UAV elements, as well as fewer mini-UAV elements carried by the sub-UAV elements. This limited capacity of UAV element systems is not sufficient enough to carry out large-scale operations, certainly not for next-generation (sixth-generation) military electronic warfare capabilities.

[0019] It is a further object of the invention to develop the "family of systems" to enable two hundred and twenty (220) unmanned vehicle elements (sub-UAV elements and mini-UAV elements) to operate together with a single parent UAV element, and to integrate all systems into existing manned and unmanned system platforms. The new invention is designed to increase air sovereignty and information sovereignty for the critical operation of air, sea, ground, and space systems, including enhancing non-entry / anti-access capabilities of an environment.

[0020] It is a further object of the invention to modify the mother UAV element to carry 21 sub-UAV elements in the belly of the mother UAV element, and each of the sub-UAV elements is configured to carry 10 mini-UAV elements, for a total combination of 232 vehicles, including the mother UAV element. These vehicles incorporate varying mission capabilities, including weapons delivery systems, sensors, integrated network and battle management command and control systems, and communications systems, which support air superiority and information superiority for military combat operations.

[0021] It is a further object of the invention to provide a modification for the UAV element family members; the parent UAV element, sub-UAV element and mini-UAV element, as well as the launch and capture systems, by changing the manner of capturing the sub-UAV elements on the parent UAV element from the newly designed "runway stiffener" element, and for launching the sub-UAV elements from the belly of the parent UAV element.

[0022] It is a further object of the invention to provide a "runway strip" element on the flatbed of the parent UAV element, wherein as the sub-UAV element approaches for landing, the "runway strip" element on the parent UAV is raised upward to the level of the top of the parent UAV element in line with the top of the nose portion of the parent UAV element.

[0023] A further object is to provide a "runway strip" element which is built into the flatbed of the parent UAV element for the purpose that if the sub-UAV element cannot land on the parent UAV element on the first attempt, the sub-UAV element is able to leave the parent UAV element and return to the parent UAV element for a second attempt.

[0024] Another object is to provide a system such that, when the parent UAV is ready to capture the sub-UAV, the runway strip element gradually rises upward, extending just above the top of the nose portion of the parent UAV element. By further providing the system in which, once raised to the top, both ends of the runway strip element gradually extend to a predetermined length, sufficient distance is provided for easy landing and takeoff in any emergency situation.

[0025] A further objective is to provide the system such that once the sub-UAV element lands on the "runway strip" element, the sub-UAV element moves further to the marked area where the "elevator" element is located. The sub-UAV element is secured with a mechanical locking system, and the elevator is lowered to the belly of the parent UAV element. The "runway strip" element is then lowered down to its original position on the flatbed of the parent UAV element.

[0026] Another task is to provide the system in such a way that the elevator element brings the sub-UAV into the belly of the mother UAV and further releases the sub-UAV elements to the conveyor belt element.

[0027] Another task is to provide the elevator, which opens on all four sides, with the sub-UAVs having the ability to step out of the elevator and move towards the conveyor belt element to store the sub-UAVs in the belly of the mother UAV.

[0028] Another task is to provide a number of conveyor belt elements in the belly of the mother UAV, with 21 sub-UAVs being able to move accordingly and be systematically stored in the belly of the mother UAV element.

[0029] Another object of the invention is to provide a secondary launch and capture system from the "landing platform" element located in the rear of the mother UAV element.

[0030] It is a further object that the present invention be modified for a plurality of missions, multi-functional and varying multi-purpose capabilities for combat and non-combat missions, which are required for future operations to accomplish complex and demanding missions.

[0031] It is a further object of the present invention to develop an integrated network communication and operational command control system to achieve greater functionality. The previous invention design served to collect data and control each of the UAV systems individually using satellite and remote control technology.

[0032] It is a further object of the present invention to design the system such that the parent UAV elements, sub-UAV elements, and mini-UAV elements all have the capabilities to integrate with artificial intelligence (AI)-powered systems, combined with the previous design of satellite and remote control systems to support a large family of multifunctional unmanned aerial vehicles and system platforms. This combination of communication platforms provides greater functionality and better control of unknown issues of future AI systems.

[0033] It is a further object of the invention to provide a large family of UAV systems (parent UAV element, sub-UAV element and mini-UAV elements) which are all integrated with each other to produce effective ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) capabilities for intelligence analysis in support of combat forces.

[0034] It is a further object of the invention to provide integrated communication systems wherein the mother UAV element and the sub-UAV element communicate with each other using multiple communication systems, such as satellite, remote control and artificial intelligence systems together to fly the mother UAV element, the sub-UAV elements and mini-UAV elements as a family of unmanned systems with a plurality of mission capabilities.

[0035] It is a further object of the invention to further equip the UAV elements with autonomy systems to support manned piloted aircraft for critical missions and to communicate, to send command signals between manned and unmanned and to receive the UAV elements, and also to communicate with mobile or stationary "data station" elements for the purpose of operating and activating all electronic devices and mechanical components for the UAV elements to communicate such that they can fly and participate in specified missions. Fig. 5 View of the rear of the mother UAV showing the exit door for takeoff Fig. 6 View of the secondary launch and capture landing platform Fig. 7 View of the sub-UAV storage area of the mother UAV Fig. 8 is the integrated communication system of the mother UAV, the sub-UAV, the mini-UAV, manned and unmanned systems, space, ground and sea, as well as mobile and stationary systems. Description of the preferred embodiments

[0036] With particular reference to the drawing Fig. 2, reference numeral 10 denotes a flatbed UAV structure comprising a nose section 11, a flatbed 16, a fixed wing 13, a vertical stabilizer 14, a parallel stabilizer 15, and jet engines 12. In addition to this normal structure, the mother UAV 10 includes an adjustable "runway strip" 17 on the flatbed 16 of the mother UAV.

[0037] Fig. 1 shows a perspective view of the flatbed mother UAV 10, which integrates the launch and capture system and the family of unmanned aerial vehicles, the Sub-UAV 2, Mini-UAV 3 and integrated communication systems of the preferred embodiments.

[0038] Fig. Figure 8 shows a family of unmanned aerial vehicles and a system of systems of the "family of systems" architecture, which is integrated with manned and unmanned platforms to perform complex military missions and operations. In particular, a large family of UAV systems is shown: the parent UAV 10, modules of Sub-UAV 2, and modules of Mini-UAV 3, as well as an integrated communication system between them, also with the manned and unmanned systems, as well as the ground- and sea-based systems.

[0039] The system is designed to provide a "family of systems" that contributes to enhancing sixth-generation air superiority and information sovereignty. The large-scale "family of systems" operating concept and operational effectiveness specifically improve military combat and non-combat operations for future requirements. To suit future requirements, it is important to build a flying air-based aircraft carrier similar to a sea-based air base and to build an air defense system similar to the "Iron Dome" system with a large number of sub-UAV and mini-UAV elements with varying capabilities and multiple operational systems, all integrated into a fully compatible autonomous system architecture to cover a wide area of the sky for large-scale combat missions.

[0040] Now, with reference by reference numerals to the drawings and initially to Fig. 1 the preferred embodiments an unmanned flatbed mother vehicle (mother UAV) 10, unmanned sub-vehicles (sub-UAV) 2 and unmanned mini-vehicles (mini-UAV) 3, a primary launch mechanism 4, a secondary launch mechanism 5, a primary capture mechanism 6, a secondary capture mechanism 7. Further, it is shown that the sub-UAV 2 comprises a launch mechanism 8 and a capture mechanism 9.

[0041] Fig. 2 shows the flatbed mother UAV 10 with a wider rear and a narrow front like the previous design, the new modification including the "runway strip" 17 on the flatbed 16 of the mother UAV 10 to improve the safety measure when the sub-UAV 2 is captured on the mother UAV.

[0042] Fig. Figure 7 shows the mother UAV 10, which is designed to carry twenty-one (21) sub-UAVs 2 in the belly of the mother UAV 10. Indeed, it is known in the art to carry a number of small aircraft in the belly of the larger aircraft. The Boeing 747 flying aircraft carrier concept, designed in the 1970s, shows the larger aircraft carrying a number of small aircraft in the belly of the aircraft.

[0043] The preferred embodiments include two operational launch and capture systems (primary and secondary), with the primary system operating from the flatbed 16 of the mother UAV 10 and the secondary system operating from the rear end in Fig. 6, reference numerals 24 and 25, of the mother UAV 10.

[0044] Fig. 5 The primary system begins the launch procedure by releasing the sub-UAV 2 from the belly of the mother UAV 10, where the exit door 22 is located. When the mother UAV is ready for launch, the conveyor belt 26 ( Fig. 7) the Sub-UAV 2 close to the exit door 22 ( Fig. 5), and once the door opens, the sub-UAV is ejected into the air, and once the sub-UAV is released, the exit door closes automatically.

[0045] The preliminary capture procedure is slightly different; when the sub-UAV is ready to land, the sub-UAV 2 sends the communication signal to the mother UAV 10. Once the mother UAV receives the communication signal, as in Fig. 4, the “runway strip” 17 on the parent UAV 10 is raised upward to the level of the top of the parent UAV 10 in line with the upper nose section 11.

[0046] The "runway strip" 17 is installed in the flatbed 17 of the mother UAV 10. Once the runway strip is raised and aligned, both ends of the runway strip section 20, 21 ( Fig. 4) gradually to a certain length which provides sufficient distance for easy landing and take-off for any emergency situations, wherein if the sub-UAV 2 cannot land in the first attempt, the sub-UAV is able to move away from the mother UAV 10 and return to the mother UAV for a second attempt.

[0047] With reference to Fig. 3, once the sub-UAV lands on the "runway strip" 17, the sub-UAV element moves further to the marked area 20 where the "elevator" 18 is located, and the sub-UAV 10 is secured with a mechanical locking system. After this, the "runway strip" 17 is lowered down to its original position on the flatbed 16 of the parent UAV 10, and the elevator 18 is lowered to the belly of the parent UAV 10.

[0048] Fig. Figure 7 shows an interior view of the belly of the mother UAV 10 and an arrangement of conveyor belts 26, also where the sub-UAV 2 carried by the elevator is located. A mechanical system is incorporated into the system such that the elevator 18 brings the sub-UAV 2 into the belly of the mother UAV, releases the sub-UAV 2 onto the conveyor belt 26, and the conveyor belt systematically brings the sub-UAVs to storage in the belly of the mother UAV.

[0049] Fig.Figure 8 shows integrated network communications and operational command control systems, which include manned and unmanned systems, as well as mobile and stationary systems, for achieving greater functionality. The parent UAV 10 communicates, sends, and receives command and operational signals with all sub-UAVs 2, and all sub-UAVs communicate, send, and receive command and operational signals with all mini-UAVs 3. Furthermore, all sub-UAVs 2, mini-UAVs 3, and the parent UAV 10 individually communicate, send, and receive command and operational signals with each other. Furthermore, all UAVs 10, 2, and 3 communicate with each other and send and receive command and operational signals with manned and unmanned systems, including ground-based and sea-based systems.

[0050] The proposed system further provides integrated communication systems, wherein the mother UAV 10 and the sub-UAV 2 communicate with each other using multiple communication systems, such as satellite, remote control, and artificial intelligence-powered systems, to fly the mother UAV 10, sub-UAV 2, and mini-UAV 3 as a family of unmanned systems with multiple mission capabilities.

[0051] The proposed system is further equipped so that the UAV system, the mother UAV 10, sub-UAV 2 and mini-UAV 3 fly autonomously in sequence, communicate and support each other, also supporting manned piloted aircraft for critical missions, such as defense against enemy targets, as well as for providing offensive capabilities by integrating and communicating between manned and unmanned, to send and receive the UAVs 10, 2 and 3, to also communicate with mobile or stationary "data station" elements for the purpose of operating and activating all electronic and mechanical components of the UAVs 10, 2 and 3 to communicate continuously so that they can fly and participate in specified missions.

[0052] To achieve all of the above-mentioned objectives, the present invention has designed a large family of UAV systems 10, 2, and 3 (parent UAV 10, sub-UAV 2, and mini-UAV 3), all of which are integrated together to generate effective ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance) capabilities for intelligence analysis to support each other and combat forces. For better communication, an AI (Artificial Intelligence) system is integrated into the "family of systems." The military recognizes that a family of unmanned systems with an AI integration system will improve future battlefield scenarios.

[0053] Storing data is a key feature of the mother UAV, sub-UAV, and mini-UAV systems, as satellite communication may be disrupted due to weather, satellite position, distance at which data is collected, or other reasons. In such situations, the mother UAV 10, sub-UAV 2, and mini-UAV 3 collect the data, store it, and transmit it to the satellites or mobile and stationary systems when the systems are ready.

[0054] Furthermore, a fixed wing 13 is provided and connected to both sides of the flatbed section, as well as a pair of horizontal stabilizers 15 and vertical stabilizers 14 extending from the end of the flatbed section. It also includes a landing gear and all other necessary equipment, mechanical components, and electronic components to operate the mother UAV 10, sub-UAV 2, and mini-UAV elements 3.
