Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to the field of oral health treatment and, more particularly, to a composition of medicated chewing gum containing guava leaf extract for treating dental plaque and tartar and having high acceptance among users.
[0002] In recent years, the habit of constantly chewing or biting on various products has become increasingly prevalent among all age groups, from children to the elderly. Children commonly consume chocolate, toffee, chips, and other packaged snacks, while adults and the elderly frequently use products such as tobacco, pan, and betel. This persistent consumption has led to a significant deterioration in oral health, with dental caries and plaque becoming widespread problems. To combat these dental problems, both allopathic and herbal remedies have been developed, with herbal remedies being particularly popular due to their minimal side effects. Among these, guava leaf extract stands out for its powerful antibacterial and anti-plaque properties, making it an effective natural solution for fighting oral bacteria and promoting dental health.
[0003] Various dosage forms containing guava leaf extract, such as powders, pastes, toothpastes, rinses, and mouthwashes, have been developed and used to combat oral health problems. These formulations harness the natural benefits of guava leaf extract to provide effective treatment options. However, despite their therapeutic efficacy, these products have struggled to gain widespread acceptance among users. The primary reason for this is that many existing oral health products require users to interrupt their habitual chewing or biting activities, reducing compliance and ultimately compromising the effectiveness of treatments. The inconvenience and interruption these products cause have limited their success in improving oral health broadly.
[0004] To overcome these limitations, there is a critical need for an oral health product that integrates seamlessly into users' daily chewing or biting habits. A medicinal preparation containing guava leaf extract that does not require users to interrupt their chewing activities would significantly improve user acceptance and compliance. By adapting to users' natural behaviors, such a product would encourage consistent use, thus maximizing its therapeutic benefits and contributing to better oral health outcomes.
[0005] Novel Dental Care and Cleansing Composition: The present invention discloses a novel dental care composition comprising a combination of various ingredients, primarily containing natural ingredients that act synergistically to treat various dental disorders. The natural ingredients include a synergistic composition of guava leaf extract, sodium perborate, and honey. Another object of the present invention is to provide a pharmaceutical preparation containing guava leaf extract for the treatment of teeth that is more convenient and attractive to use.
[0006] An ingestible oral health composition has synergistic proportions of active ingredients, consisting of: baking soda; guava leaves; turmeric; black pepper; erythritol or xylitol; coconut oil; and vegetable glycerin with a natural flavor extract. The oral health composition can be in the form of a tablet, powder, paste, or suspension. The oral health composition provides excellent cleansing and control of oral health problems. The oral health composition can be ingested to provide health benefits to the entire body.
[0007] Another object of the present invention is to provide a pharmaceutical preparation containing guava leaf extract for dental treatment, the use of which provides a similar sensation to that experienced by the user when chewing or biting on the product of his choice.
[0008] A method of using guava extract is disclosed, comprising administering guava extract to a mammal to inhibit, prevent, or alleviate headache, nausea, dry mouth, loss of appetite, tremors, and fatigue. A composition comprising a pharmaceutically acceptable carrier and guava extract is also disclosed.
[0009] Another object of the present invention is to provide a pharmaceutical preparation containing guava leaf extract for treating teeth, which is in the form of a medicated chewing gum preparation.
[0010] Another object of the present invention is to provide a medicated chewing gum preparation mainly containing a guava leaf extract, sweetener, emulsifier, softener, antioxidant and a base.
[0011] Another object of the present invention is to provide a medicinal chewing gum preparation that has a higher acceptance among people due to its pleasure components in use.
[0012] Another object of the present invention is to provide a fixed-dose medicated chewing gum preparation that provides prolonged release of the active ingredient and local action for effective treatment management.
[0013] Another object of the present invention is to provide an economical and user-friendly oral herbal composition for effective treatment of oral health.
[0014] In one aspect, the present invention provides a medicinally effective chewing gum composition containing guava leaf extracts and other pharmaceutically acceptable carriers.
[0015] In another aspect, the present invention provides a medicated chewing gum composition comprising a guava leaf extract, sweetener, emulsifier, softener, antioxidant and a gum base.
[0016] In another aspect, the present invention provides a medicated chewing gum preparation that provides prolonged release of the drug extract and local action for long-lasting effect in the treatment of the disease.
[0017] In another aspect, the present invention provides a method for preparing a medicated chewing gum containing guava leaf extract useful for treating tooth decay and tooth loss.
[0018] With the advance of various products of choice like chocolates, toffees, chips, tobacco, pan, betel, dairy products or other packaged products which required chewing or biting; with its frequent use people have developed the bad habits of keeping chewing or biting such products most of the time.
[0019] This has disturbed the oral hygiene of people and thus led to dental problems like caries, tooth decay, plague, etc. and can be observed in every other human being.
[0020] With the increase of such problems, people have also developed various oral dosage forms or treatments to treat or reduce such diseases; however, the addiction of chewing or biting has surpassed the use of such products of their choice over the health products, which has reduced the effect or benefit of developing such oral health products or treatments.
[0021] There are various products on the market, such as powders, pastes, toothpastes, rinses, mouthwashes, chewable tablets, etc., designed to treat the oral cavity or teeth. However, because people don't use them, the results aren't as expected. People were unwilling to replace their products of choice with oral health products, which led to a deterioration in their oral health. In simple terms, the acceptance of existing products was low.
[0022] The present inventors proposed a solution to this problem by proposing and developing an oral health product that has a high level of acceptance since it does not make users feel like giving up their chewing habits or replacing the product of their choice with a health product or treatment, thus achieving a high level of acceptance of the proposed products among users and thus improving oral health.
[0023] In a preferred embodiment, the present invention provides a medicated solid dose chewing gum preparation primarily comprising a gum base, a guava leaf extract, and other pharmaceutically acceptable ingredients intended to be chewed rather than swallowed.
[0024] In another embodiment, the present invention provides a medicated chewing gum preparation containing a guava leaf extract, sweetener, emulsifier, softener, antioxidant, and a gum base.
[0025] In another embodiment, the medicated chewing gum preparation provides extended release of the drug extract and a local effect, providing effective treatment for oral health problems such as tooth decay or tooth wear.
[0026] Source of biological material: Fresh young leaves were collected in Mandideep, Madhya Pradesh during the months of November and December.
[0027] In another embodiment, the present invention provides a method for preparing medicated chewing gum containing guava leaf extract and other pharmaceutically acceptable carriers for treating dental problems.
[0028] During preparation, fresh, selected leaves were washed with tap water, dried in the shade, and the dried leaves were processed into a coarse powder to extract the active ingredients.
[0029] The hydro-distillation method is then used to extract the various components from the coarse powder.
[0030] The in vitro antibacterial activity of the extract against S. mutans was tested using the well-diffusion method, measuring the inhibition zone (diameter) around each well. Seven groups of plates were prepared for this purpose: methanolic (G1), ethanolic (G2), ethyl acetate (G3), acetone (G4), aqueous (G5), pet. ether (G6), and the essential oil group. The concentrations required for the bioassay were prepared by dissolving these extracts in 1 ml of DMSO.
[0031] Subsequently, the minimum inhibitory concentration was determined using different concentrations (1µl to 10µl) of the extracted essential oil, i.e. the lowest concentration of the bioactive compound at which no visible growth of the organism occurs.
[0032] Since the essential oil showed inhibition against bacteria even at minimal concentrations, it was used to formulate the medicinal chewing gum composition.
[0033] In a preferred embodiment, the medicated chewing gum composition contains the following ingredients: Rubber base 65.0 g Extracted essential oil - 60 microliters Glycerin (plasticizer) 1.0 ml Xylitol (sweetener) 15 g Glyceryl monostearate (emulsifier) 4.0 g Soy lecithin (plasticizer) 0.5 g BHT (antioxidant)- 1 g Calcium carbonate qs
[0034] A melt process or conventional process is used to prepare the medicated chewing gum preparation, the process comprising the following steps a) Melt the chewing gum base in a glass container b) Adding the other ingredients one by one into the melted (liquid form) gum base at a regular time in c) Terval d) Incorporation of the extracted essential oil into the chewing gum base e) cooling the mixture and rolling it into sheets and, f) Cutting the leaves into small pieces to obtain the finished chewing gum preparation.
[0035] Chewing gum formulation optimization is based on texture profile analysis. Texture profile analysis (TPA) is an objective sensory analysis method that involves squeezing standard-sized food samples twice. The test involves squeezing a bite-sized piece of food twice in a reciprocating motion that mimics the action of the jaw. From the resulting force-time curve, a set of texture parameters can be calculated that correlate well with the sensory evaluation.
[0036] To investigate the formulation variables that influence the responses under study, a Box-Behnken design is used. This means that two formulation variables (amount of gum base and plasticizer glyceryl monostearate) are varied at three levels: low (coded as -1), medium (coded as 0), and high (coded as 1). Ingredients that do not have a significant influence on responses are not selected for BBD studies. Examples
