Abstract
Description
Technical area:
[0001] Sustainable building materials, CO2 storage, bricks made from industrial secondary raw materials. Short description:
[0002] The N50 brick combines a mineral outer shell with a filling of CO2-binding porous material. The outer shell preferably comprises 50-60 percent by volume and is based on natural pozzolanic or hydraulically reactive binders such as metakaolin, trass, or algal lime. The filling preferably consists of biochar or comparable materials with a high specific surface area and amounts to approximately 50 percent by volume. Technical problem:
[0003] Conventional bricks are usually made of fired clay or other CO2-intensive materials and lack an active CO2 binding function. What's missing is a load-bearing brick that utilizes natural mineral binding agents and simultaneously has a CO2-negative overall balance. Solution of the invention:
[0004] The brick according to the invention combines a mineral outer shell made of natural pozzolanic binders with a filling of CO2-binding porous material with a high specific surface area. Preferably, biochar or comparable biochar is used. This material system achieves permanent CO2 binding with sufficient load-bearing capacity. Technical description:
[0005] The brick consists of a pressure-resistant outer shell and a CO2-binding filling. The outer shell is made of industrial secondary materials such as finely ground brick dust, fly ash, dolomite flour, or natural trass – materials with hydraulic or pozzolanic reactivity. The components are homogenized with water, shaped, and dried, preferably in a CO2-enriched atmosphere. The filling consists of carbonatable, porous material such as brick dust or crushed sand and preferably makes up 50 percent of the total volume. Comparison to the state of the art:
[0006] The brick according to the invention can correspond in its external shape to commercially available masonry bricks (e.g., NF, DF, or hollow brick formats). The filling can be completely enclosed or remain open at the top and bottom, depending on the processing concept. This facilitates the practical application for the person skilled in the art without limiting the claims. Note on optional CO2 activation:
[0007] The brick can optionally be manufactured using a CO2-enriched manufacturing process. This includes, for example, mixing with CO2-enriched water, molding in a CO2 atmosphere, or CO2-assisted drying. This process is not the subject of the present application but is claimed separately.
Claims
[1] Bricks with ecological CO2 binding effect, comprising an outer carrier shell and an inner filling, characterized by , that: - the outer shell consists of naturally occurring, pozzolanic or hydraulically reacting binders, preferably from metakaolin, natural trass, algal lime, shell lime or mixtures thereof, in a proportion of 30 to 75 percent by volume of the total mixture, - and the filling comprises between 30 and 70 volume percent of a CO2-binding material, preferably selected from at least one of the following components: (a) biochar or comparable pyrolytic biochars (e.g. from wood, hemp, coconut shells, miscanthus), (b) porous ashes of vegetable or mineral origin such as rice husk ash or coconut shell ash, (c) upgraded biomass-based activated carbons, each with a specific surface area of at least 200 m 2 / g (BET).
