Description

[0001] The present invention relates to a dispersion paint, a method for producing the dispersion paint, the use of the dispersion paint, and the use of alkanolamine for stabilizing dispersion paints.

[0002] Various coating materials are available for coating substrates. Besides silicate paints, there are, among others, dispersion silicate paints and polymer dispersion paints.

[0003] Silicate paints are two-component paints that contain no organic components. The two main components are water glass and a water glass-resistant pigment. Silicate paints are typically mixed by combining the two main components immediately before application. Therefore, silicate paints require several steps, and their application is generally difficult and requires considerable experience.

[0004] In addition to water glass and water glass-resistant pigment, dispersion silicate paints according to DIN 18363 contain up to 5% by weight of organic components, based on the total amount of dispersion silicate paint. These organic components are primarily synthetic resin dispersions. Other substances, such as water repellents, may also be included. The use of synthetic resin dispersions makes it possible to offer dispersion silicate paints as single-component systems.

[0005] Both silicate paints and dispersion silicate paints typically have a very strongly alkaline pH value of up to 13, which requires more elaborate precautions regarding occupational safety.

[0006] Plastic dispersion paints, also known as dispersion paints, typically contain relatively large amounts of organic chemical components, especially synthetic resins such as polymers, particularly in the form of synthetic resin dispersions. To ensure sufficient storage stability, dispersion paints usually require preservatives, especially biocides such as isothiazolines. However, these can cause irritation and skin reactions, particularly in allergy sufferers.

[0007] Several methods have been proposed to provide plastic dispersion paints that do not require preservatives. These methods are based in particular on water glass and alkyl siliconates.

[0008] EP 1 297 079 B1 describes a dispersion paint containing polymer dispersion, pigment and / or filler, water glass, and water. This dispersion paint is characterized by the fact that it does not require preservatives. However, the presence of water glass means that it also contains an inorganic binder, which can impair the properties of the dispersion paint, particularly its workability.

[0009] German patent DE 1 031 910 B describes an alkyd resin emulsion paint containing titanium dioxide, fillers, an alkyd resin, and water. Sodium methyl siliconate is added to this paint immediately before application, resulting in improved washability compared to alkyd resin emulsion paints without sodium methyl siliconate. DE 1 031 910 B makes no statement regarding the pH value of the alkyd resin emulsion paint, its storage stability, or the presence of preservatives. Furthermore, storage of an alkyd resin emulsion paint containing sodium methyl siliconate according to DE 1 031 910 B is not intended.

[0010] German patent applications DE 10 2014 013 455 A1 and DE 10 2016 002 221 A1 each describe a dispersion paint containing a polymer, pigment, filler, alkyl siliconate, and water. Both documents state that the dispersion paint has an alkaline pH of no more than 12. Neither document describes how the dispersion paint can be stabilized by using an alkanolamine. A disadvantage of the dispersion paints containing alkyl siliconates described above is that yellowing can occur with some unsuitable polymers and titanium dioxide variants. Furthermore, the formation of white potassium carbonate, which can result from a reaction with carbon dioxide, can be a disadvantage in the colored range. Additionally, alkyl siliconates are relatively expensive.

[0011] Furthermore, the use of N-alkylalkanolamines and / or N,N-dialkylalkanolamines as a synergist in combination with a biocide for stabilizing latex compositions is known from EP 1 362 897 A2. However, EP 1 362 897 A2 does not describe any latex compositions containing N-alkylalkanolamines and / or N,N-dialkylalkanolamines without a biocide.

[0012] DE 10 2014 012 020 A1 further describes a dispersion containing (A) at least one compound of the formula (R 1< NCH 3 )CH 2 (CHOH) 4 CH 2 OH, wherein R 1< H, C 1 -C 4 -alkyl, CH 2 CH 2 OH or CH 2 CH(CH 3 )OH, (B) a polymeric binder and (C) water.

[0013] WO 2016 / 074186 A1 describes a dispersion of polymer particles comprising, as polymerized units, in dry weight, based on the total dry weight of the polymer particles, 85% to 99.9% ethylene unsaturated non-ionic monomers, 0.01% to 4% phosphorus-containing (meth)acrylate monomers and at least one neutralizer.

[0014] WO 2008 / 081036 A1 describes latex colour formulations containing at least one N-alkyl dialkanolamine as a neutralising agent and methods for their use.

[0015] FR 2 907 789 A1 describes the use of 2-n-butylaminoethanol as a neutralizing and / or co-dispersing agent in a paint and / or as an agent for developing the color strength of pigment(s) in a white paint base that one wishes to tint.

[0016] US 3 892 791 A describes a titanium chelate that is the reaction product of a titanium orte ester, a glycol or glycol ether and an alkanolamine.

[0017] Based on the prior art explained above, one object of the invention was to provide a dispersion paint that is essentially free of preservatives, has good storage stability and / or is easy to process.

[0018] All or some of these problems are solved according to the invention by the dispersion paint according to claim 1, the method according to claim 12, the use according to claim 14 and the use according to claim 15.

[0019] Advantageous embodiments of the invention are specified in the dependent claims and are explained in detail below.

[0020] The dispersion paint according to the invention has a pH value of 10 to 12 and contains, based on the total weight of the dispersion paint, the following components: a. 0 to 25 wt.% pigment, b. 20 to 50 wt.% filler, c. 1 to 25 wt.% polymer, d. 0.01 to 5 wt.% alkanolamine, e. 25 to 70 wt.% water, wherein the dispersion paint is essentially free of preservatives and wherein the dispersion paint contains at least one alkali plate.

[0021] Surprisingly, it has been found that by combining 0 to 25 wt.% pigment with 20 to 50 wt.% filler, 1 to 25 wt.% polymer, 0.01 to 5 wt.% alkanolamine, and 25 to 70 wt.% water in a dispersion paint with a pH value of 10 to 12, a dispersion paint is obtained in which the components exhibit excellent compatibility with each other. As a result, surfaces coated with the dispersion paint according to the invention have a more homogeneous appearance. This is particularly evident in the fact that the surfaces coated with the dispersion paint according to the invention appear very uniform with good flow. Consequently, the dispersion paint according to the invention is easy to work with and has a long open time. Furthermore, it has been shown that the dispersion paint according to the invention does not discolor even after a storage period of several weeks without preservatives. Finally, it was found that the pH value of the dispersion paint according to the invention remained essentially constant over a storage period of several weeks.

[0022] Without wishing to be bound to a specific theory, the alkanolamine appears to stabilize the dispersion paint, particularly its pH value, and to ensure good compatibility between the components. In contrast to preservative-free dispersion paints known in the prior art, the dispersion paint according to the invention does without the inorganic components water glass or siliconate, which appears to improve the compatibility between the components at the pH value of the dispersion paint according to the invention.

[0023] The alkanolamine appears to act as a pH buffer in the dispersion paint according to the invention. This seems to result in improved storage stability of the dispersion paint. This effect was not foreseeable given the use of alkanolamines as synergists for biocides, as described in EP 1 362 897 A2.

[0024] Dispersion paints within the meaning of the invention include, in particular, interior dispersion paints, exterior dispersion paints, silicone resin paints, as well as plasters and building coatings based on dispersion, including interior and exterior plasters.
