AI Technical Summary
Existing portable devices for moistening pre-pasted wall coverings often lead to improper operation, resulting in prolonged contact of adhesive with water, causing dripping, bubble formation, and bonding defects due to non-uniform wetting and the need for manual handling that exposes operators to wet conditions.
A portable device with a presenting cylinder and a water projection system that automatically moistens the adhesive layer without direct contact, ensuring uniform water application and preventing prolonged exposure to water, designed for manual operation without electrical components.
Ensures consistent and efficient moistening of pre-pasted wall coverings, preventing adhesive defects and reducing operator exposure to water, while allowing easy handling and storage.
Description
[0001] The invention relates to a portable device for moistening a pre-pasted wall covering with a water-activatable adhesive layer and to a humidification method using such a portable device.
[0002] The Applicant currently offers a range of glass fiber-based wall coverings, one side of which is coated with a water-activatable adhesive, i.e. an adhesive that is not sticky in the dry state but whose adhesive character is activated when it is brought into contact with a sufficient quantity of water. The Applicant also offers a portable machine dedicated to the easy humidification of these pre-glued wall coverings (EasyGlue ® technology). This portable machine comprises a gutter in which a retaining roller is fixed. When the operator wishes to use the machine, he fills the gutter with water so as to at least partially immerse the retaining roller. He passes the wall covering strip under the retaining roller so as to immerse the wall covering strip for a few seconds in the water when he pulls on the end of the strip. After wetting and wiping off the excess water, the strip is cut and applied to the support. In principle, the cutting should be done upstream of the water-filled gutter so as not to leave the adhesive in contact with the water in this reservoir for too long. The correct use of this known wetting machine thus implies that for each new strip, the operator slides the wall covering under the support roller in the water-filled gutter. Since this last operation is a little tricky to carry out and systematically involves wetting the operator's hands for each new strip, it has been noted that operators often deviate from the recommended operating procedure and carry out the cutting, not upstream, but downstream of the water gutter. An area of the next strip then remains in water for several minutes, or even several tens of minutes, before being applied to the support, which can lead to dripping, bubble formation and bonding defects.
[0003] The purpose of this application is to propose a portable humidification machine which prohibits an incorrect mode of operation, as described above, where a part of the pre-pasted wall covering remains in water for too long a time.
[0004] The idea behind the present invention is to pass the pre-glued wall covering strip over a cylinder, hereinafter called the "presenting cylinder", the rotation of which automatically triggers the projection of water by a water projection device, onto the pre-glued face of the strip. This projection of water stops automatically as soon as the movement of the presenting cylinder stops so as to ensure that, when the machine is at rest, that is to say when the operator has extracted a moistened strip of a desired length and is busy applying it to the support, no area of the glued face of the wall covering strip is in prolonged contact with the water in the tank. Thanks to the design of this new machine, all areas of the glued face of the wall covering thus receive substantially the same quantity of water.
[0005] To operate the machine of the present invention, the operator simply pulls manually on the strip of wall covering and recovers, at the outlet of the device, a uniformly moistened strip, even if he allows several tens of minutes to elapse between two strips of wall covering. Unlike the state-of-the-art machine described above, the new device does not offer any other inappropriate operating mode likely to lead to problems with the adhesion of the wall covering to the support. Furthermore, the operator does not need to put his hands in the water tank between two successive strips.
[0006] Patent US1337729 discloses a device for pasting the back of wallpaper. This device comprises a housing, a glue reservoir, a rotating brush that dips into the glue when the reservoir is full, and a rotating cylinder around which the wallpaper to be pasted is wound. The brush and the cylinder are in contact with each other and rotate at the same speed in opposite directions. The application of the glue to the wallpaper is done by direct contact between the glue-coated brush and the back of the wallpaper. To establish this contact, the device is designed so that the rotating cylinder and the rotating brush are parallel to each other and in contact with each other along their entire length.
[0007] Such a device would be unsuitable for moistening a pre-pasted wall covering. Indeed, since water has a negligible viscosity compared to that of the glue applied in US1337729, the quantity of water, carried by the brush from the reservoir and brought to the contact zone between the brush and the cylinder, would be insufficient to ensure satisfactory moistening of the dehydrated glue (approximately 150 to 250 g of water per m 2 < ).
[0008] Furthermore, direct contact between the brush and the pre-pasted wall covering would result in undesirable transfer of adhesive from the wall covering to the brush. Such direct contact would create a risk of damage to the wall covering by the brush in the event of incorrect adjustment of the device or even if the rotational drive of the cylinder and therefore the brush were to stop, which would then be in prolonged contact with the wall covering.
[0009] This document therefore does not provide a satisfactory solution to the problem of uniform wetting of a pre-pasted wall covering.
[0010] The present application more specifically relates to a portable device for moistening one side of a strip of pre-glued wall covering, comprising a housing, a reservoir capable of containing water, a cylinder presenting the pre-glued wall covering strip, fixed by its two ends to the housing so as to be able to rotate freely around its axis of revolution, a projection device capable of projecting water, present in the reservoir, over the entire length of the presenting cylinder, a connection means capable of connecting in movement the presenting cylinder to the projection device, so that the rotation of the presenting cylinder triggers the projection of water by the projection device and stopping the rotation of the presenting cylinder interrupts the projection of water by the projection device.
[0011] In the portable device according to the invention, the projection device is at a distance from the presentation cylinder so that the projection device is not in direct contact with the presentation cylinder.
[0012] The device of the present invention is a portable device, that is to say its weight and dimensions are such that two people, preferably a single adult, are able to lift it and transport it from one place of use to another.
[0013] Its weight is generally between about 10 and 40 kg, preferably between 15 and 35 kg.
[0014] The device is preferably designed so that some of its constituent elements, such as feet or other fixing elements, can be easily disassembled so as to reduce the external dimensions of the device. These disassemblable elements are advantageously designed so that they can be housed in the housing of the device or fixed to the housing of the device.
[0015] The device is advantageously free of electrical or electronic elements and also free of motor. In other words, the movement of the various elements necessary for humidifying the covering strip is the result of the traction force exerted by the operator on the end of the wall covering strip engaged in the device of the present invention in the manner described below.
[0016] The largest dimension of the device, in the dismantled state, generally does not exceed 2.2 meters and is advantageously between 100 cm and 210 cm, preferably between 95 and 120 cm.
[0017] The housing of the device has sufficient dimensions to contain at least the presenting cylinder, the reservoir and the projection device, and preferably also the connection means. It is preferably made of a material that is both light and strong, for example plastic or metal, preferably aluminum.
[0018] The housing is preferably designed so that it can be fixed on removable feet, so that its upper edge is at a convenient height for the operator, for example at a height from the ground of between 70 cm and 120 cm, preferably between 80 and 100 cm.
[0019] The housing is preferably open at the top, which allows the operator to follow the rotation of the presenting cylinder, the scrolling of the paper, and possibly the projection of water by the projection device, to detect any disturbances and to remedy them thanks to easy access to the various mechanical elements. In addition, the water tank can be easily filled from the top of the housing.
[0020] The reservoir capable of containing water is advantageously located at the bottom of the housing. It may be an integral part of the housing or take the form of a separate container, removably installed in the housing, in particular to facilitate cleaning. The reservoir is preferably at least partially open at the top so that the projection device can draw water from it.
[0021] Advantageously, at least one dimension of the reservoir is greater than or equal to the width of the pre-glued wall covering strip, i.e. greater than approximately 100 cm, preferably between more than 100 cm and 210 cm, in particular between 102 and 120 cm.
[0022] In an advantageous embodiment of the device of the present invention the reservoir is located at the bottom of the housing and, when filled with water, the projection device is partially submerged therein.
[0023] The tank advantageously includes a drain hole which allows the water contained in the tank to flow out without it being necessary to tip or tilt the device.
[0024] Advantageously, the tank includes means for indicating the level of the water contained in the tank, such as a gauge or graduations (Min; Max) so as to allow simple and rapid visual control of the water level.
[0025] The presentation cylinder is an essential element of the device of the present invention. It is fixed to the housing so as to be able to rotate freely around its axis of revolution. This rotation is a passive rotation, that is to say the presentation cylinder rotates when the wall covering, with which it is in contact, moves under the effect of the tensile force exerted by the operator.
[0026] The device of the present invention comprises a set of fixed guide means, capable of guiding the strip of pre-glued wall covering inside the housing, so that the non-pre-glued face of the wall covering is in contact with the presenting cylinder and its pre-glued face is opposite, at a distance, the water projection device.
[0027] These guide means are advantageously cylindrical bars having a smooth surface on which the wall covering strip slides easily. The cylindrical bars are parallel to the axes of revolution of the presenting cylinder and the projection device.
[0028] The coefficient of static friction (or coefficient of adhesion) between the unglued side of the pre-glued wall covering strip and the surface of the presenting cylinder must be high enough to prevent any slippage of these surfaces relative to each other. Indeed, if the wall covering were to slip during operation on the surface of the cylinder, this would lead to a reduction, or even an interruption, of the water projection by the projection device and insufficient or irregular wetting of the water-activatable adhesive layer.
[0029] In order to prevent this slippage, the presenting cylinder is advantageously formed of rubber or has a rubber coating or rubber elements on its surface. It is not necessary for the entire surface of the presenting cylinder capable of coming into contact with the wall covering strip to be made of rubber. However, in a preferred embodiment of the presenting cylinder at least 50%, in particular at least 70% and ideally more than 90% of the surface of the presenting cylinder capable of coming into contact with the wall covering strip is made of rubber.
[0030] The path of the pre-glued wall covering strip in the device housing is such that it is its non-pre-glued side that comes into contact with the surface of the presenting cylinder. The presenting cylinder thus presents the glued side of the wall covering strip to the water spraying device located nearby.
[0031] Advantageously, the portable device according to the invention comprises a run meter, that is to say a system capable of measuring the length of the strip of wall covering associated with a display means in order to inform the operator.
[0032] The water projection device is preferably a rotating device capable - thanks to the centrifugal force generated by its rotation - of projecting water towards the presenting cylinder.
[0033] The spraying device is located at a distance from the presenting cylinder, in other words the spraying device is not in direct contact with the presenting cylinder, nor with the pre-glued face of the wall covering strip. The spraying distance is determined to allow the spraying of the water, previously drawn, towards the presenting cylinder, towards the pre-glued face of the wall covering strip. The absence of direct contact also allows the spraying device to rotate faster than the presenting cylinder and thus ensures, among other things, the spraying of a sufficient quantity of water.
[0034] Thanks to the absence of contact, there is no prolonged contact between the projection device and the pre-glued wall covering strip, in particular but not exclusively while the operator is installing a wall covering strip whose pre-glued side has just been moistened.
[0035] The appropriate projection distance between the outer casing of the projection device and the surface of the presenting cylinder depends on various parameters, for example the embodiment of the projection device (porous structure, fibrous structure, blades), the quantity of water required and the ratio of the respective rotational speeds of the projection device and the presenting cylinder.
[0036] This projection distance is for example between 0.5 cm and 15 cm, preferably between 1 cm and 10 cm, more preferably between 2 and 5 cm.
[0037] Advantageously, the configuration of the spraying device determines the volume of water that can be drawn and then sprayed, i.e. the quantity of water intended to moisten the pre-glued face of the wall covering strip.
[0038] In one embodiment of the device of the present invention, the water projection device is a straight cylinder, fixed by its two ends to the housing so as to be able to rotate freely around its axis of revolution. This rotating cylinder comprises on its surface a drawing means capable of reversibly charging itself with water when it comes into contact with the water present in the tank. The water projection device is therefore located in the housing so as to be partially immersed in the water present in the tank.
[0039] The spraying device "draws" the water from it, i.e. cavities in the drawing means fill with water and drive the water in the direction of rotation. When the rotation speed of the spraying device is sufficient, the centrifugal force generated projects the drawn water towards the pre-glued side of the wall covering strip which runs in the immediate vicinity, generally between a fixed guide means and the presenting cylinder.
[0040] The ejection means may consist, for example, of a plurality of vanes. These vanes may extend along the entire length of the rotating ejection means and define gutters, or they may be spoon-shaped and distributed circumferentially in a regular manner over the entire surface of the rotating projection device.
[0041] The vanes forming the drawing means of the projection device are configured to draw water from the reservoir and, under the action of centrifugal force, then project it towards the presenting cylinder and in doing so onto the pre-glued face of the wall covering.
[0042] Preferably, the vanes are not straight, i.e. they do not extend radially in a rectilinear manner. The vanes are advantageously configured to draw water but also to retain it during rotation until the water is sprayed selectively when the presenting cylinder and therefore the pre-glued face of the strip of wall covering to be moistened is opposite to receive the water sprayed under the effect of centrifugal force.
[0043] Advantageously, the blades have a free end configured to form a deflector which facilitates the drawing of water from the reservoir of the device and therefore the filling of the volume of the cavity or cavities delimited by the blades.
[0044] Advantageously, the deflector prevents water from being projected radially under the effect of centrifugal force during the rotation between drawing water from the reservoir and projecting water towards the pre-glued face of the wall covering strip.
[0045] Advantageously, the deflector is configured to direct the water projected towards the presenting cylinder and the facing strip of wall covering.
[0046] In another embodiment, the drawing means may comprise on its surface a porous and / or fibrous structure or be made of such a porous and / or fibrous structure. The water is then drawn, for example, by capillarity from the reservoir and projected under the effect of centrifugal force towards the wall covering.
[0047] Of course, in order to ensure regular humidification of the pre-glued side of the wall covering, the axis of revolution of the presenting cylinder is preferably parallel to the axis of revolution of the projection device.
[0048] In a preferred embodiment of the device of the present invention, the presenting cylinder and the rotating water projection device rotate in the same direction. They are mechanically connected to each other by a connection means. This connection means comprises, for example, a belt capable of transmitting the rotary movement of the presenting cylinder to the projection device. The connection means is preferably a drive system comprising a drive pulley, integral with the presenting cylinder, a receiving pulley, integral with the water projection device, and a transmission belt. The pulleys and the belt are preferably toothed.
[0049] The inventors found that, in order to create sufficient centrifugal force at the rotating projection device, the latter had to rotate faster than the presentation cylinder, in other words the angular speed of the projection device must be greater than the angular speed of the presentation cylinder. The ratio of the angular speeds of the presentation cylinder and the projection device is determined by the transmission ratio of the connection means. More particularly, the transmission ratio, defined as the ratio of the diameter of the drive pulley, integral with the presentation cylinder, to the diameter of the receiving pulley, integral with the projection device, is advantageously between 2 and 10, preferably between 2.5 and 8, in particular between 3 and 6.
[0050] The quantity of water sprayed during operation by the spraying device onto the pre-glued face of the wall covering is advantageously at least equal to 150 g / m 2< , preferably between 160 and 250 g / m 2< .
[0051] When the operator pulls on the wall covering strip which is in adhesive contact with the surface of the presenting cylinder, the latter is set in rotation. This rotational movement automatically triggers, via the connection means, the rotational movement of the spraying device partially immersed in the water present in the tank. The rotation of the spraying device generates sufficient centrifugal force to project the drawn water towards the presenting cylinder and the wall covering which passes near the spraying device. The projected water moistens the pre-pasted surface of the wall covering strip. Since it is difficult to precisely control the quantity of water necessary for sufficient moistening of the pasted face, the excess water projected onto the pasted face will flow by gravity towards the bottom of the housing. The device of the present invention is advantageously designed so that water flowing by gravity from the presenting cylinder and / or the wall covering strip is collected in the reservoir. This recycling of water advantageously reduces the quantity of water consumed and the frequency of refilling the reservoir.
[0052] This can be achieved simply by having the axis of revolution of the presenting cylinder located directly above the tank or by using a ramp capable of collecting the water flowing by gravity from the presenting cylinder and / or the wall covering strip and diverting it towards the tank.
[0053] The device of the present invention advantageously comprises an unwinding device capable of receiving a roll of pre-pasted wall covering to be moistened and allowing the latter to unwind freely. This device must be protected from the humidity present in the housing and is therefore preferably located outside the latter, for example fixed to the external surface of the housing or to the feet of the device. In a preferred embodiment, the unwinding device is a simple bar, removably fixed to the outside of the housing, parallel to the axis of revolution of the presenting cylinder. This bar is designed to be introduced into the lumen of the roll of wall covering and is long enough to protrude on either side of the latter. The ends of the bar protruding from the roll can then be installed on a fixing system. The unwinding device could also be in the form of a gutter large enough to accommodate the roll of wall covering.
[0054] Advantageously, the device of the present invention comprises a device for wiping the moistened wall covering strip at the outlet of the housing. This wiping device is preferably formed of a fixed guide means, located downstream (in the direction of movement of the wall covering strip) of the presenting cylinder, and of a support element bearing against this guide means, for example by gravity or thanks to a spring effect. The pressure exerted by the support element on the fixed guide means is such that it allows the passage of the moistened pre-glued wall covering strip between the guide means and the support element. The moistened glued face of the wall covering strip is then in contact with the support element and the unglued face with the guide element. The support element is for example a smooth plate bearing by gravity against the guide element and therefore against the moistened glued face of the wall covering.
[0055] Finally, the device of the present invention may further comprise a plate fixed, preferably horizontally, to the outside of the housing, said plate being capable of receiving the strip of pre-glued wall covering moistened at the outlet of the housing, in particular downstream of the wiping device.
[0056] The operator can place the wet strip on this plate by folding it back on itself, wet side against wet side. The plate can also serve as a cutting surface. It can, for example, include a straight groove, perpendicular to the direction of movement of the wall covering strip, which allows the guidance of a cutting tool. The device of the present invention can also include a cutting device comprising a guided blade, which can be moved by the operator along a path perpendicular to the direction of movement of the wall covering strip.
[0057] In an advantageous embodiment, the plate has dimensions such that it can be used as a cover to close the housing for storage or movement of the device.
[0058] The present application also relates to a method of humidifying a strip of pre-glued wall covering using a portable device as described above.
[0059] This method comprises at least the following steps: filling the tank with water, inserting the pre-pasted wall covering strip into the housing so that at least part of the non-pre-pasted face is in contact with the surface of the presenting cylinder and at least part of the pre-pasted face is opposite the projection device, pulling on the pre-pasted wall covering strip so as to rotate the presenting cylinder and trigger the projection of water by the projection device onto the pre-pasted face of the pre-pasted wall covering strip, stopping pulling on the pre-pasted wall covering strip when the strip extracted from the portable device has the desired length so as to interrupt the rotation of the presenting cylinder and trigger the stopping of the projection of water by the projection device.
[0060] The water projection device of the portable device according to the invention is at a distance from the cylinder presenting the pre-glued wall covering strip so that said projection device is not in direct contact with the presentation cylinder and consequently not in contact with the pre-glued face of the wall covering to be moistened.
[0061] The present invention will now be described with reference to the drawings in which: there figure 1 is a schematic cross-sectional view of a device according to the invention ready for use, showing the housing and the various elements it contains; the figure 2 is a perspective view of a device according to the invention.
[0062] In the figure 1 , the housing 1 is an open metal box at the bottom of which is provided a reservoir 2 filled with water. A presenting cylinder 3 configured to rotate freely around its axis of revolution 10 in the direction of the arrows A has on its surface a rubber coating 8.
[0063] A water projection device 4 comprising on its surface a drawing means 6 formed of a plurality of blades is provided near the presenting cylinder 3. The presenting cylinder 3 is arranged at a distance from the projection device 4 so that said projection device 4 and the presenting cylinder 3 are not in direct contact, separated from each other by a determined projection distance, generally between 0.5 cm and 15 cm.
[0064] The projection device 4 can also rotate freely around its axis of revolution 11 in the direction of the arrows B. When the reservoir 2 is filled with water, part of the blades of the drawing means 6 plunge into the water and can thus be loaded with water. The projection means 4 is driven in movement (rotation) by the presenting cylinder 3 via a connection means 5 which makes it rotate in the direction of the arrows B, that is to say in the same direction as the presenting cylinder 3. The connection means 5 comprises a drive pulley 5a, integral with the presenting cylinder 3, a receiving pulley 5b, integral with the projection means 4, and a belt 5c connecting the two pulleys 5a, 5b. An unwinding device 9 is fixed to the device outside the housing 1. This unwinding device 9 is inserted into the lumen of a roll of wall covering 20.The path of the wall covering strip 20 in the housing is determined by a set of fixed guide means 17a, 17b, 17c which guide the wall covering strip so that it is wound around the presenting cylinder 3, its non-pre-glued face being in contact with the presenting cylinder 3 and its glued face facing the water spraying device 4. When the operator (not shown) exerts a tensile force on the wall covering strip 20 in the direction of arrow C, the presenting cylinder 3 performs a rotational movement in the direction of arrows A. Thanks to the connection means 5 the rotational movement of the presenting cylinder 3 is transmitted to the spraying device 4 which performs a rotational movement identical to that of the presenting cylinder, but at a higher angular speed. The centrifugal force created by the rotation of the spraying device 4 causes water, drawn by the vanes of the drawing means 6, to be sprayed towards the presenting cylinder 3 and the glued face of the wall covering 20. The presenting cylinder being directly above the reservoir 2, any excess water flowing from the wall covering strip 20 is collected in the reservoir 2. The excess water is in particular free to flow by gravity between the presenting cylinder 3 and the spraying device 4 arranged at a distance from each other and offset from each other. The wet wall covering strip 20 passes between a guide means 17c and a support element 12 which allows the moistened glue to be smoothed. A plate 13 for receiving the wet wall covering strip 20 is fixed horizontally at the upper edge of the housing 1.This fixing can be done for example by means of hinges allowing the plate to be folded over the opening of the housing and the plate 13 to be used as a cover for the housing for the purpose of transporting the device.
[0065] There figure 2 shows the device of the invention as a whole in a ready-to-operate state. Four removable feet 18 support the housing 1. The plate 13 is fixed horizontally to the upper edge of the housing 1. It has dimensions allowing it to completely cover the opening of the housing. Two handles 19 are provided at the upper edge of the housing. The unwinding device 9 is fixed here on the removable feet 18 and not, as in the figure 1 , to the housing. We see the three guide means 17a, 17b, 17c of the wall covering strip as well as the support element 12 which rests freely on the guide means 17c.
