Abstract

The described locking mechanism is an automatic, weight-balanced locking mechanism for public waste containers with side-hung lids. It prevents accidental opening of the lid caused by wind or animals and is automatically deactivated during emptying without the need for manual operation. The locking mechanism consists of a rotatable locking arm mounted on a shaft that is integrated into the existing transport handle of the waste container. The shaft acts as a bearing for the locking arm and is available in a right- and left-hand version with angled bearing holes that create an overbalance that keeps the locking arm in the locked position during normal use. When the container is tilted during emptying, the center of gravity changes and the locking arm rotates away from the lid, releasing it. When the container is replaced, the arm automatically returns to a neutral position, from which it can easily be returned to the locked position. The invention is a passive, mechanical solution without electronics that can be easily installed in existing containers without structural changes. It ensures increased usability and reduced maintenance of the area around the waste container by preventing waste spreading and errors due to failure to empty it.
