Description

Field of the invention

[0001] The present invention relates to a reinforced adjustable frame, a method of using the reinforced adjustable frame, and a system comprising the reinforced adjustable frame. Background of the invention

[0002] Adjustable frames have been known for quite a while. However, with increased concerns about workers' safety on e.g., construction sites, there is a need of equipment that reinsures the safety of workers. Especially, newer regulations require fall accident preventing equipment which fulfill requirements such as resisting an impact, from e.g., a fall. Additionally, regulations concerning particles and other air quality parameters are also needed to be considered. The working environment on construction sites comprises a lot of harmful airborne particles, that can damage airways. Further, workers may unknowingly approach access restricted areas due to insufficient access control. Also, today' safety equipment at construction sites is typically put together ad hoc for specific dimensions from new construction materials such as wood and simply scrapped afterwards, as re-use is resource demanding and difficult. On this account, tons of fine wood and other materials are scrapped just because it is not affordable or practical to recycle it. Thus, it is urgent to find a solution that can fulfill safety requirements, so both the health and safety for workers, as well as sustainability, can be improved. Objective of the invention

[0003] The inventors have identified the above-mentioned problems and challenges related to safety equipment on construction sites, and subsequently made the below-described invention which may increase or provide work safety with respect to one or more of fall accidents, unauthorized access, and air pollution, and which may increase or provide sustainability of safety equipment such as facilitating re-use and versatility.Summary of the invention

[0004] The invention relates to a reinforced two-way adjustable frame comprising four corner elements, at least four side links and at least one four-way junction; wherein said reinforced two-way adjustable frame comprises four sides each formed by two of said four corner elements telescopically connected through at least one of said at least four side links; and wherein opposite sides of said four sides are telescopically connected at said side links through at least one of said at least one four-way junction.

[0005] The present invention provides for an easily re-usable frame that fits a range of dimensions thereby being versatile and sustainable, contrary to ad hoc frames made of new wood and scrapped afterwards. The adjustability may also provide for improved portability when adjusted to the smallest dimension, thereby further facilitating re-usability and sustainability.

[0006] The reinforcement by means of at least one four-way junction may increase robustness and reduce gap dimensions in the frame, to facilitate compliance with safety regulations. Intersections are formed at each four-way junction by the telescopic connection of the opposite sides of the frame. The connection of opposite sides of the four sides telescopically at the side links through the one or more four-way junctions thereby forms at least one cross-shaped blockage inside the opening formed by the four sides of the frame, thereby reinforcing the frame. This means, that even without any covering, panes, plates or sheets mounted in the frame, the mounting of the adjustable frame itself achieves a blocking for improved safety. Preferably, the mounted, adjustable frame complies with safety regulations and standards such as EN 13374:2013, EN 13374:2013+A1:2018, or other standards, without further mounting of covering.

[0007] Also due to its adjustability, the invention does not necessarily need additional cover elements to prevent of fall accidents through openings, is it may be fitted to the actual size of a dangerous opening.

[0008] A further advantage of the invention is that the frame may be used as a temporary wall. Thus, the invention may e.g., act as room separator. This may be advantageous for achieving effective access control to areas with restricted access, or for containing dust or other air pollution. A temporary wall may also advantageously prevent view to certain areas, where this may be desirable. Further, depending on applied frame covering, a temporary wall my help separate areas with different temperature or noise levels.

[0009] A further advantage of the invention is that the frame may be used as a temporary fence, whereby the invention can be used for keeping out unauthorized persons from certain areas and maintain certain areas safe for intruders. In particular, the frame of the present invention may provide an easily applicable, yet effective, way of preventing unknowing or inadvertent access, where simple marking may not always be recognized or understood.

[0010] A further advantage of the invention is that the frame can be introduced in a network comprising multiple installments of the invention, hereby further increasing the ability to fit larger openings such as walls.

[0011] As used herein the term "four-way junction" refers to an intersection where the four sides are telescopically connected.

[0012] As used herein the term "opening" refers to an empty space in e.g., walls or floors which solid objects can travel through, such as door or window openings, or stairwells or elevator shafts.

[0013] As used herein the term "two-way adjustable" refers to the ability to alter the size of the frame in two different directions that are orthogonal to each other. During use, the size may be altered in only one of the directions or both directions. The terms direction and way may be used interchangeably herein.

[0014] As used herein the term "telescopically connected" refers to elements that are connected to each other in such a way that they are slidably adjustable.

[0015] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said at least four side links and at least one four-way junction consist of four side links and one four-way junction.

[0016] Thereby is provided an embodiment which may be simple to manufacture yet may be highly useful for the intended purposes as described above, as well as being extremely portable in terms of relevant dimensions and weight.

[0017] A further advantage of the embodiment having only four side links and one four-way junction, is that such a frame, while being simple and portable, can anyway be used to cover larger openings by being introduced in a network comprising multiple installments of the frame.

[0018] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said two corner elements or said opposite sides being telescopically connected comprises a connection through at least one telescopic element.

[0019] As used herein the term "telescopic element" refers to an element that may allow slidable adjustment in length. The adjusting of length may be in accordance with the direction for the two-way adjustable frame.

[0020] As used herein the term "connection" refers to different elements that are directly or indirectly connected mechanically and, due to the telescopic connection, may be slidably adjustable.

[0021] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic element comprises one telescopic receiver from one of said side links and one telescopic receiver from either one of said corner elements or from said at least one four-way junction.

[0022] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic element comprises at least one slidable connected telescopic extension element, such as two or three or more slidable connected telescopic extension elements.

[0023] As used herein the term "telescopic extension element" refers to an element that is part of a telescopic element to achieve further extension. This may also include multiple elements that is connected to one another. Thus, the extension can e.g., arise from a slidable connected element or multiple slidable connected elements.

[0024] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 10, 12, 15, 16, 20, 25 or 30 of said at least one four-way junction, such as 1 to 15 four-way junctions, such as 1 to 12, such as 2 to 12, such as 3 to 10, such as 4 to 8 of said four-way junctions, for example 1 to 8 four-way junctions, such as 1 to 6, such as 2 to 4 four-way junctions, or 1 to 4 four-way junctions, such as 1 to 3, such as 1 or 2 four-way junctions.

[0025] The number of four-way junctions in an adjustable frame according to the invention may be selected depending on the usage of the frame. For instance, a larger number of four-way junctions may be selected to ensure reinforcement for larger openings. Additionally, a larger number of four-way junctions may be selected to achieve smaller gaps within the frame, for prevention of falling through said frame and for compliance with regulations.

[0026] Accordingly, an increased number of four-way junctions may advantageously increase the strength of the frame, and / or decrease the size of gaps, e.g., selected in accordance with the relevant safety regulation, e.g. as defined in standards such as EN 13374:2013, EN 13374:2013+A1:2018, or other standards.

[0027] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, profiles of one or more of said corner element, side links, telescopic elements, four-way junctions and / or reinforcement elements are rectangular, quadratic, triangular, pentagonal, hexagonal, circular, elliptic, multi polygonal, U-shaped, V-shaped, L-shaped, T-shaped, H-shaped, or any combination thereof.

[0028] As used herein the term "profile" refers to the shape as seen in a cross section of the material that make up the different elements. Profiles of rectangular, such as quadratic, shape, may be preferrable as they are simple to manufacture and handle, simple to use in telescopic connections, yet highly stable and strong. Elements that fit into other elements for telescopic effect may be rods or pipes, i.e., solid or hollow, whereas elements that fit around other elements for telescopic effect may preferably be pipes, i.e. hollow.

[0029] Different elements of the frame can either be of the same profile or different profiles. Thus, the frame can comprise one profile or a composition of different profiles. Elements that may be connected, may advantageously comprise the same or a matching profile. An element can comprise different profiles across its longitudinal direction. Thus, it may match adjacent elements with different profiles, or by using an adapter. A change of profile along the length of an element may prevent telescopic movement past this point, and thereby be useful as a limitation mechanism.

[0030] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said corner elements each comprise two orthogonally arranged telescopic connection receivers.

[0031] Telescopic connection receiver may for example comprise an end of a pipe or other profile configured to match a telescopic element for assembling the sides of the frame. The term receiver does not necessarily imply a female connector receiving another element into itself but can also be a male connector receiving another element on its outside. In other words, a telescopic receiver can be an end of a pipe receiving an end of another pipe of either smaller or larger cross-section.

[0032] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said side links each comprise two parallel arranged telescopic connection receivers and a third telescopic connection receiver that is orthogonally arranged to said two parallel arranged telescopic connection receivers.

[0033] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said at least one four-way junction comprises two orthogonally arranged pairs of parallel arranged telescopic connection receivers.

[0034] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame is adjustable to span from 20 cm to 800 cm in each of the two adjustable ways such as 50 cm to 700 cm, such as 100 cm to 600 cm, such as 150 cm to 500 cm, such as 200 cm to 400 cm, such as 250 cm to 350 cm.

[0035] The invention advantageously allows adjustment in different lengths, in each of the adjustable ways. Thus, the frame of the invention may be able to form different shapes such as quadrangular or rectangular, to match a shape and dimension of an opening. A further advantage of the invention is that the frame may be adjusted in one length in one adjustable way and another length in the second adjustable way. A further advantage of the invention is that the invention may form a quadrangular shape, such as a rectangular shape.

[0036] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame is adjustable to span from 75 cm to 230 cm in each of the two adjustable ways such as, 85 cm to 220 cm, such as 100 cm to 200 cm, such as 110 cm to 180 cm, or 75 cm to 200 cm, or 90 cm to 230 cm.

[0037] Such dimensions match typical window and door openings and may therefore be advantageous adjustment ranges for a frame of the invention.

[0038] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame is adjustable to span from 20 cm to 100 cm range in each of the two adjustable ways such as, 30 cm to 90 cm, such as 40 cm to 80 cm, or 20 cm to 75cm, or 50 cm to 100 cm.

[0039] Such dimensions match typical smaller window or service openings and may therefore be advantageous adjustment ranges for a frame of the invention.

[0040] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame is adjustable to span from 50 cm to 400 cm range in each of the two adjustable ways such as, 50 cm to 300 cm or 200 cm to 400 cm, such as 75 cm to 275 cm, such as 100 cm to 250 cm, such as 150 cm to 250 cm, such as 125 cm to 225 cm, or 50 cm to 200 cm, or 100 cm to 300 cm, or such as 200 cm to 400 cm.

[0041] Such dimensions match larger window, door or hallway openings and may therefore be advantageous adjustment ranges for a frame of the invention.

[0042] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame is adjustable to span from 400 cm to 800 cm range in each of the two adjustable ways such as 450 cm to 750 cm, such as 500 cm to 700 cm, or 400 cm to 600 cm, or 500 cm to 800 cm.

[0043] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame has a minimum span of 50 cm, 75 cm, 85 cm, 100 cm, 150 cm, or 200 cm.

[0044] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame has a maximum span of 100 cm, 150 cm, 180 cm, 200 cm, 230 cm, 250 cm, or 300 cm.

[0045] In one advantageous example, the minimum span is 75 cm, and the maximum span is 230 cm, whereby the frame is highly useful for most typical door and window openings, while still being portable to handle manually and fit in, e.g., trunks in its minimum setting.

[0046] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the two-way adjustable frame has different minimum span in its two adjustable directions and / or different maximum span in its two adjustable directions.

[0047] For typical window and door openings, the width is often less than, for example, 200 cm or 150 cm, while the doors will typically require a larger vertical dimension, such as 200 cm or 230 cm. It may therefore be advantageous to provide the adjustable frame with less horizontal adjustment range to save weight and costs, as an, e.g., 230x230 cm frame is rarely required, and would anyway be achievable by putting together two of the more often relevant rectangular frames.

[0048] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, one adjustable way of the frame is adjustable from 50 cm to 200 cm, such as 75 cm to 150 cm, 50 cm to 100 cm, 50 cm to 150 cm or 75 cm to 200 cm, while the other adjustable way is adjustable from 100 cm to 300 cm, such as 100 cm to 250 cm, 100 cm to 230 cm, 150 cm to 300 cm, 150 cm to 250 cm or 150 cm to 230 cm.

[0049] Preferably and advantageously the frame may be adjustable independently in each direction. Among others, this enables covering openings with shapes such as quadrangular and rectangular, and thereby match different openings such as, but not limited to, windows, doors, fences hallways, gates, shafts such as elevator shafts, technical shafts, staircase shafts, atriums, ventilation shafts and stairwells.

[0050] The frame size may preferably be designed with typical or standardized building or construction dimensions in mind such as, but not limited to, windows, doors, fences hallways, gates, shafts such as elevator shafts, technical shafts, staircase shafts, atriums, ventilation shafts and stairwells.

[0051] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic element comprises a stop mechanism.

[0052] As used herein the term "stop mechanism" refers to a prevention for further extension and preventing the telescopic element from falling apart. Advantageously, a stop mechanism may improve user friendliness and safety of using the adjustable frame as it prevents the frame from falling apart during transport, handling and installation and / or while in use for blocking an opening. Dropping a part of a frame through, e.g., an elevator shaft during installation may be dangerous for other workers. Preventing the frame from falling apart during transport, installation or other handling avoids a requirement of putting together the right parts in the right way.

[0053] A stop mechanism may advantageously be provided in a non-removable way, e.g. by welding, during manufacturing of the frame, thereby preventing the frame from being disassembled or parts thereof getting lost. In another embodiment, the stop mechanism is user-operable, e.g. a push button lock, to allow dismantling and reassembling the frame when desired, e.g. for minimum storage or shipping dimensions.

[0054] In a preferred embodiment, a stop mechanism is provided for all telescopic connections including any extension elements. In a simpler version, saving manufacturing costs, redundant stop mechanisms of corresponding parallel telescopic connections are not provided, thereby providing, for example, only four stop mechanisms for an entire adjustable frame.

[0055] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic extension elements are secured in at least one telescopic element to prevent falling apart by said stop mechanism.

[0056] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic extension elements are secured in each other and / or in a corner element, side link or four-way junction to prevent falling apart by said stop mechanism.

[0057] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said stop mechanism comprises a spot welding, bolt or screw sliding in a groove, a push button lock or latch movable between predefined holes, slots or notches, or two non-traversable spot weldings or a spot welding and a non-traversable protrusion or bolt or screw.

[0058] Spot welding is a simple and non-expensive way to provide a non-removable protrusion which may be stopped from sliding further when reaching the end of a groove, or another spot welding or protrusion. A bolt or screw sliding in a groove or may also be provided as alternative to a spot welding, e.g. when the material or dimensions makes welding unsuitable, or when the option of disassembling is desired. For easy disassembling, the stop mechanism may comprise a push button lock or latch. This may also be advantageous when a locking mechanism is also desired, as described below.

[0059] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said telescopic element comprises a locking mechanism.

[0060] As used herein the term "locking mechanism" refers to a mechanism to maintain a certain extension of the telescopic element. Advantageously, a locking mechanism may improve user friendliness and safety of using the adjustable frame as it prevents the frame when set to its desired extension, e.g. matching a window opening, from retracting to its minimum position, or extending to its maximum position, e.g. due to gravity or impact. While the frame can be locked to a specific dimension by clamping or screwing it to the edge of the opening, which also secures the frame in the opening, it may sometimes be advantageous to also be able to lock one or both directions of the frame without securing it to an opening. For instance, when applying the adjustable frame as a temporary fence, it may be secured to horizontally adjacent structures, but the height of the fence will retract to the minimum size by gravity. A locking mechanism may be advantageous to maintain a desired fence height, e.g. a fence height prescribed by regulations.

[0061] A locking mechanism may advantageously be stepless or ungraduated, to allow any setting to be locked. A locking mechanism may advantageously comprise predetermined lock positions or discrete adjustment intervals to allow easy setting at predetermined dimensions, such as prescribed dimensions, and / or make it easier to achieve identical settings for several frames.

[0062] In a preferred embodiment, a locking mechanism is provided for all telescopic connections. In a simpler version, saving manufacturing costs, redundant stop mechanisms of corresponding parallel telescopic connections are not provided, thereby providing, for example, only four stop mechanisms for an entire adjustable frame.

[0063] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said locking mechanism comprises a spot welding, screw, bolt, push button, latch, protrusion, clamp, etc., movable between a number of predetermined holes, slots, recesses, etc., or vice versa, to provide locking at predetermined frame dimensions.

[0064] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said locking mechanism comprises a finger screw, quick release screw, bolt, screw, press-fit lock, clamp, etc., configured to move stepless between a minimum position and a maximum position to provide locking at any frame dimension therebetween.

[0065] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said locking mechanism comprises said stop mechanism.

[0066] A stop mechanism may advantageously comprise several user-selectable stops at different positions, to also function as a locking mechanism. A locking mechanism may advantageously comprise a maximum setting to prevent falling apart, to also function as a stop mechanism.

[0067] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, at least one of said corner elements, side links or four-way junction comprises a reinforcement element.

[0068] As used herein the term "reinforcement element" refers to an element that may further reinforce the frame. An example could be inclined struts attached between orthogonal telescopic receivers of one or more of corners, side links and four-way junctions. Additionally, an element of any shape, could be attached to the four-way junction to further reinforce said frame.

[0069] A further advantage of the invention is that it may comprise reinforcement elements to achieve improved stability and impact resistance, for example in accordance with relevant safety regulation and standards, such as EN 13374:2013, EN 13374:2013+A1:2018, or other standards.

[0070] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises at least one frame mounting element.

[0071] As used herein the term "frame mounting elements" refers to an element that may be used to hold the frame in place and mount the frame to an opening.

[0072] Thereby the frame can be fixated to an opening further reinforcing the frame and its safety function, and / or maintaining the dimensions of the adjustable frame preventing gravity or impact from retracting or extending it.

[0073] As used herein the term "fixated" refers to when the frame is made stationary relative to the opening. Thus, the frame can be stationary by e.g., utilizing flanges or hinges and secure it to walls, casing or other elements defining the opening.

[0074] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame mounting elements are located on said corner elements and / or said side links.

[0075] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame mounting elements comprise flanges, brackets, hinges or loops.

[0076] The frame mounting elements may advantageously and at little additional manufacturing cost be provided as simple brackets or similar, through which the corner or side link may be secured or fixated to the opening by screws or nails. Thus, by e.g., incorporating a screw thread, the frame may easily be secured or fixated. Additionally, it may be advantageous to secure the frame to an opening e.g., with hinges since it still can provide a safe secure attachment, but also can replace e.g., doors and maintain an opening and closing function. Thus, the frame mounting elements may be advantageous in that they can add functionality to the frame to make it e.g., act as a door.

[0077] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises at least one cover mounting element.

[0078] As used herein the term "cover mounting elements" refers to an element that may be used for attaching a cover to the frame, the cover being, e.g., a sheet of wood or cardboard, a metal plate, a pane of glass, plastic or fiber reinforced plastic, a foil or film of plastic or textile, a layer of insulation, a slab of concrete, etc.

[0079] A further advantage of the invention is that the frame may be used in combination with a cover for covering or shielding for example against weather, cold, dust, moisture, eyes of unauthorized persons, noise, fire or explosions, etc. The ability to provide a user-selectable cover to the frame is advantageous for facilitating compliance with regulations.

[0080] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame cover mounting elements may comprise holes within the frame, multi polygonal angle brackets, round angle brackets, D-rings, bolts, screws, clamps or any combination thereof.

[0081] Depending on the kind of cover material, various frame cover mounting elements may be more or less suitable. In a simple embodiment, through holes or threaded holes are provided in the frame elements such as corner elements, side links and four-way junction to fasten a cover with bolts or screws. For fast mounting and releasing of a cover, clamps or similar may be advantageous.

[0082] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises a cover comprising a sheet of wood or cardboard, a metal plate, a pane of glass, plastic or fiber reinforced plastic, a foil or film of plastic or textile, a layer of insulation, a slab of concrete, or any combination thereof.

[0083] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises an organic based material, an inorganic based material, or any combination thereof.

[0084] A further advantage of the invention is that the frame may be made from one or more materials among several different options. The material or materials may advantageously be selected with due consideration of the intended use of the adjustable frame, included the requirements of any relevant regulations. A frame for simply covering small openings from dust penetration may be made entirely of non-expensive plastic, whereas, e.g., steel or aluminum, are better choices for a frame commissioned to a robust and stable blockage of an elevator shaft as fall accident prevention. The frame may advantageously comprise recycled materials, thereby possibly reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability of the frame.

[0085] Due to its flexibility, and in particular when selecting durable materials for its manufacture, the frame according to the invention may have a long lifespan, and / or may be reused multiple times, thereby possibly reducing environmental impact and improving sustainability of the frame.

[0086] Materials for different elements may advantageously be mixed to reduce weight while maintaining compliance with safety regulation for e.g., construction sites.

[0087] According to the invention, different elements such as corner elements, side links, four-way junctions, sides, telescopic elements, telescopic receiver elements, telescopic extension elements, frame mounting elements, cover mounting elements and / or reinforcement element could either arise from the same material or different materials. Thus, the frame as a whole can comprise one material or a composition of different materials.

[0088] Different materials for the manufacture of different elements such as corner elements, side links, four-way junctions, sides, telescopic elements, telescopic receiver elements, telescopic extension elements, frame mounting elements, cover mounting elements and / or reinforcement element may be mixed to alter the appearance and properties of a frame according to the invention, such as weight, strength, user experience, etc.

[0089] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame comprises steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, wood, plastic, glass, fiberglass, iron, thermoplastic polymers such as polyethylene PE, polypropylene PP or polyvinyl chloride PVC, aluminum, or any combination thereof.

[0090] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame further comprises recycled materials.

[0091] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame further comprises stone or concrete or any combination thereof.

[0092] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame weighs less than 15 kilogram.

[0093] A further advantage of the embodiment having only a weight less than 15 kilogram, is that it enables the user to easily move the frame. Thus, the user can carry the frame between two locations, without the need for e.g., a crane or any other means for lifting.

[0094] The invention further relates to a method of covering an opening, the method comprises the steps of: providing a reinforced two-way adjustable frame according to any of the above embodiments in said opening; extending said frame in at least one direction to fit said opening; fixating said frame to said opening.

[0095] As used herein the term "fixating" refers to when the frame is made stationary relative to the opening. Thus, when the frame is fixated, it is secured to walls, casing or other elements defining the opening. Such fixating may be by e.g., utilizing a clamp, glue, screws, a bracket, screw thread, hinges, etc., for example a frame mounting element as described above.

[0096] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame is extended in two directions to fit said opening.

[0097] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method further comprises mounting a cover to said frame.

[0098] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method further comprises releasing said frame from said opening and retracting said frame in at least one direction to its minimum dimension.

[0099] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method further comprises transporting said frame to a second opening and repeating the method with respect to the second opening.

[0100] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, the method comprises providing an additional of said reinforced two-way adjustable frame, extending it in at least one direction, and fixating it adjacent to the first frame.

[0101] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said frame is extended in one or two directions to comply with a requirement of a safety regulation.

[0102] By the present invention an opening may be blocked or even covered in an advantageously fast and simple way, by extending a provided adjustable frame in one or two directions to fit the opening, and then securing it, optionally comprising a cover. Thereby the method may be used in the same way and with the same adjustable frame for multiple openings with different sizes.

[0103] Further, the method improves sustainability in construction safety as it does not imply ad hoc construction with new material and scrapping when used. Quite oppositely, the present method preferably involves re-using the frame for a different opening, when use is finished for the first opening. Because of the preferably durable materials, user-friendly operation in extending and retracting the frame, and the adjustability in size, the frame is highly advantageously re-used without additional effort, thereby saving costs, time and environmental impact.

[0104] The invention further relates to a guard system 200 for blocking an opening, said guard system comprising at least one reinforced two-way adjustable frame according to any of the above embodiments.

[0105] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said system comprises at least two of said reinforced two-way adjustable frames stacked on top of each other and / or mounted besides each other.

[0106] In an advantageous embodiment of the invention, said system comprises a cover covering one or more of said at least one reinforced two-way adjustable frame.

[0109] Fig. 1 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. The reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 in this example comprises four corner elements 2 and four side links 3, which are connected to form a rectangular frame. In the visualized embodiment, each side link 3 is connected to two corner elements 2, which combined make up a side 5. The reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is made up of a total of four sides 5. Lastly, the embodiment comprises a four-way junction 4 connecting the four side links 3.

[0110] The corners 2, side links 3 and four-way junction 4, and possibly other elements of frame embodiments explained elsewhere herein, may for example be made of or comprise pieces of pipe or other longitudinal profiles, for example made of steel, aluminum, hard plastic, etc., to provide a strong and durable frame, for example to use for safety purposes as a safety barrier, and allow for dismounting and remounting several times for sustainability. The frame is preferably made to comply with requirements of various regulations, e.g. regarding strength, and preferably has a size, e.g. length of the sides 5, that fits common openings to be sealed off as explained in more detail below.

[0111] The construction of the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 enables its proportions and dimensions to be telescopically modified. In fig. 1, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is extended to maximum dimensions of the given embodiment, but can be made smaller in one or both directions as described below.

[0112] Compared to a simple frame, the four-way junction 4 provides reinforcement of the frame and reduces its maximum gap size, without preventing it to be adjusted. The reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is capable of withstanding an impact of a certain force, and / or passing through of objects above a certain dimension, for example according to safety regulations for construction sites.

[0113] Fig. 2 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 illustrates how a corner element 2 comprises two orthogonally arranged corner element telescopic receivers 72, i.e. receivers to accommodate parts of side links 3 for physical connection of the frame and for enabling telescopic function to allow adjustment of the dimensions of the frame. Likewise, the side links 3 comprise two parallel arranged side link telescopic receivers 73 to accommodate receives 72 of the corners 2, and a third side link telescopic connection receiver 73 that is orthogonally arranged to the two parallel arranged side link telescopic connection receivers 73, to accommodate a part of the four-way junction 4. Additionally, fig. 2 illustrates how the four-way junction 4 comprises four four-way junction telescopic receivers 74 arranged as two orthogonally arranged pairs of parallel arranged telescopic connection receivers 74, i.e. forming a cross shape, to accommodate a side link telescopic receiver 73 from each side link 3. Although not indicated in the drawing for simplicity, all the corners 2, side links 3 and four-way junctions 4 in the shown embodiment comprise telescopic receivers for physical connection and telescopic function.

[0114] As shown in fig. 2, the embodiment of the adjustable frame 1 enables the frame to be adjusted individually in each direction without compromising the other direction.

[0115] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, two of the four sides 5, are adjusted in length compared to the configuration in fig. 1. Moreover, they are adjusted independently without compromising the length of the other two sides. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 expansion in one direction is decreased compared to fig. 1. The telescopic connections between the frame elements allows for partial or full extraction in each or both directions.

[0116] Fig. 3 illustrates further details about the frame of fig. 1 and fig. 2. In the visualized embodiment, it is shown how the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can comprise telescopic elements 6.

[0117] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, for simplicity, only some telescopic element 6 are numbered. Ultimately the comprised elements enable the frame 1 to be adjusted in one way, without compromising the other way, or in both ways.

[0118] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, all of the four sides 5 are adjusted in length compared to fig. 1. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 expansion in two directions are decreased. The possibility of adjusting the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 in two ways, enables it to fit different openings of different dimensions and / or proportions. Besides of fitting different openings, the frame is also able to get compacted into a smaller size, that makes the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 more portable.

[0119] Fig. 4 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. The reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is visualized with a minimum dimension first direction Dimin and a minimum dimension second direction D2min. Together, the two direction or ways display the smallest possible expansion span of the given embodiment, i.e. a minimum span D1min, D2min. Furthermore, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is visualized with a maximum dimension first direction D1max and a maximum dimension second direction D2max. Together, the two direction or ways display the largest possible expansion span of the given embodiment, i.e. a maximum span D1max, D2max.

[0120] The specifically illustrated embodiment illustrates the capabilities of altering the extension of the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1. More precisely, the illustrated embodiment highlights the minimum directions the two-way adjustable frame 1 can expand. Moreover, it illustrates how the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can be adjusted independently in one direction without compromising the other direction. Additionally, the illustrated embodiment highlights the maximum directions the two-way adjustable frame 1 can expand. Thus, the specifically illustrated embodiment further explains how the frame may be altered in any of the two ways, such the two-way adjustable frame 1 can fit many different openings.

[0121] The minimum and maximum spans D1min, D2min, D1max, D2max, may be selected according to intended or predicted use of the adjustable frame. For example, for safety barriers for building construction sites, typical dangerous openings to be barred may comprise door and window openings, elevator shafts, etc. The adjustable frame may for example be designed with minimum spans in both direction of 75 cm, i.e. D1min=D2min=75 cm, and with maximum spans in both directions of 230 cm, i.e. D1max=D2max=230 cm, to fit common door and window openings, e.g. 75x75 cm, 100x150 cm, 90x230 cm, etc. For larger openings, like elevator shafts, staircases, panoramic windows, etc., an adjustable frame with larger minimum and maximum spans may be designed.

[0122] Figs. 5a, 5b and 5c illustrate an embodiment, where the frame 1 acts as a temporary security installment in different openings at a construction site. Fig. 5a illustrates a part of a building, showing two walls and a floor, and the displayed openings are first uncovered. In fig. 5b, several reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 have been adjusted differently and mounted in the different openings. The openings illustrated are a window opening 100, an opening in the floor 101 or a door opening 102. In fig. 5c, the reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 have been removed again from the disclosed openings. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 can be transported to a different construction site and used again for different or similar openings. Before handling, transportation or storage, the adjustable frames can advantageously be adjusted to their minimum dimensions.

[0123] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the versatility of the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is highlighted. The different displayed openings may portrait some of the common openings that could appear on a construction site. The reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is then adjusted, such that the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can fit the different openings, and act as a safety installment e.g., an opening in the floor 101 or a door opening 102. Additionally, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can also be adjusted to fit e.g., a window opening 100, and can also be used for mounting a cover giving shelter from e.g., dust or wind. After the temporary installation in the different openings, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can be removed and reused at a different construction site.

[0124] Figs. 6a and 6b illustrate a corner element 2, that comprises telescopic elements 6, and a stop mechanism 91 in each direction. Additionally, it is illustrated how the four-way junction also may comprise multiple stop mechanisms 91. The stop mechanism 91, illustrated in the embodiment both comprises a physical barrier, and a groove, in which the physical barrier can move freely in the length of extension, according to the length of the groove. It is further illustrated in fig. 6b how a stop mechanism 91 can be substituted with a locking mechanism 92. The locking mechanism 92 may in an example, as the stop mechanism 91, comprise a physical barrier and a groove, in which the physical barrier can move freely in the length of extension and be locked a specific position, according to the length of the groove.

[0125] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the stop mechanism 91 is shown as a displacement. The stop mechanism 91 is displayed at different locations, emphasizing that it prevents the telescopic elements 6, and thereby the frame 1, from falling apart. Thus, the telescopic element 6 cannot extend longer than the stop mechanism and cannot fall apart. Several other stop mechanism configurations can be implemented.

[0126] In the specifically illustrated embodiment of fig. 6b, the locking mechanism 92 is shown. The locking mechanism is moveable in the shown groove and in this specific example also acts as a stop mechanism, i.e., a combined stop and locking mechanism. In other embodiments, the locking mechanisms and stop mechanisms may be separate.

[0127] The locking mechanism 92 enables the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 to be locked in a certain position. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 can be adjusted to fit an opening, without mounting it or prior to a mounting. The certain span can be adjusted independently in either of the two directions as shown on fig. 4., and the locking mechanism 92 may allow locking at any possible dimension, or only in predetermined locking positions. In the example, the locking mechanism comprises a finger screw that can be tightened and loosened by manual force to lock and release the position. Several other locking mechanism configurations can be implemented.

[0128] Even though figure 6b only show one locking mechanism 92, multiple locking mechanisms 92 can be introduced. Even further, multiple stop mechanisms 91 may be substituted or replaced with a locking mechanism 92.

[0129] The location or placement of the stop mechanism 91 may vary, and could for example be located on top, below or on the different side of the visualized figures.

[0130] The location or placement of the locking mechanism 92 may vary, and could for example be located on top, below or on the different side of the visualized figures.

[0131] Figs. 7a and 7b illustrate reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 according to embodiments of the invention. In fig. 7a a further reinforcement element is installed in the form of a four-way junction reinforcement element 84. In fig. 7b a further reinforcement element is installed in the corner, hereby forming a corner element reinforcement element 82.

[0132] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is further reinforced by either corner element reinforcement element 82 and / or four-way junction reinforcement element 84. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 may be capable of resisting a greater impact. Additionally, the reinforcement elements reduce the size of the gap 85. Thus, the area, where physical objects can fall through, is reduced, which leads to an increase in safety.

[0133] In an embodiment, a side link reinforcement element 83 may also be installed.

[0134] In an embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 may comprise at least one reinforced element of the following corner element reinforcement element 82, side link reinforcement element 83, four-way junction reinforcement element 84. Thus, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 may comprise either of the three different reinforcement elements, all the three reinforcement elements, or any combinations of reinforcement elements.

[0135] The further reinforcement from corner element reinforcement element 82, side link reinforcement element 83, four-way junction reinforcement element 84 may also provide a means for mounting a cover to the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1, as further described below. By acting as a means for mounting a cover element, the frame gaps can further be reduced. Thus, the area, where physical objects can fall through, is reduced, which leads to an increase in safety. Additionally, a cover can shield against falling objects, wind and dust, which further increase safety.

[0136] Figs. 8a and 8b illustrate a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. In fig. 8a the two-way adjustable frame 1 and a cover 95 is portraited separately. In fig. 8b the cover 95 has been mounted onto the two-way adjustable frame 1. Hereby, a mounted cover reinforced two-way adjustable frame 96 is formed.

[0137] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is combined with a cover 95 to form a mounted cover element reinforced two-way adjustable frame 96. Hereby, the mounted cover element reinforced two-way adjustable frame 96 may further increase protection by acting as a safeguard against e.g., wind, dust or different harmful particles that can be carried by air. The cover may also prevent views through an opening, insulate against cold or noise, etc., depending on the material and kind of cover 95. Cover 95 may for example be a sheet of wood or thin metal, a pane of plastic or glass, a plastic film, an insulating blanket, etc.

[0138] Figs. 9a and 9b illustrate a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. Compared to the previously illustrated embodiments, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 of figs. 9a-9b further comprises telescopic extension elements 61. In fig. 9b it is illustrated how the telescopic element 6 may comprise a telescopic extension element 61.

[0139] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame has alternate telescopic elements 6. In the illustrated embodiment, the telescopic elements 6 are more complex in the previous embodiments and allow further extension. The introduction of telescopic extension element 61, can increase the maximum dimension first direction D1max and a maximum dimension second direction D2max as shown on fig. 4. Ultimately, the largest possible expansion span is increased, while the impact resistance is maintained. Thus, the safety is not compromised by introducing a greater degree of extension. In an embodiment, the telescopic extension elements 61 are only implemented in one direction, whereby the maximum dimension first direction D1max may become different than the maximum dimension second direction D2max. In an embodiment, several telescopic extension elements 61 are implemented in one or more of the telescopic elements 6.

[0140] Fig. 10 illustrates a corner element 2, comprising multiple stop mechanisms 91. Additionally, a telescopic extension element 61 is highlighted. Lastly, it is shown how the telescopic element 6 may comprise multiple stop mechanisms 91.

[0141] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame can through a telescopic extension element 61, be further extended. Thus, the introduction of telescopic extension element 61, can further increase the maximum dimension first direction D1max and a maximum dimension second direction D2max as shown on fig. 4. Ultimately, the largest possible expansion span is increased, while the impact resistance is maintained. Thus, the safety is not compromised by introducing a greater degree of extension.

[0142] Even though figure 10 show two stop mechanisms 91, multiple stop mechanisms 91 can be introduced. Even further, one or more or all of the multiple stop mechanisms 91 may be substituted or replaced with locking mechanisms 92.

[0143] Fig. 11 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame comprising frame mounting elements 93.

[0144] The location or placement of the frame mounting elements 93 may vary and is not strictly placed on a corner element 2. The frame mounting elements 93 could for example be located below or on any different side of the visualized figure.

[0145] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the reinforced two-way adjustable frame comprising frame mounting elements 93, enables a means for mounting a reinforced two-way adjustable frame to many different openings. Additionally, it further increases the impact strength of the frame, leading to an increase in safety. Through a frame mounting element 93, the frame may also be adjusted and kept at a certain span while being mounted through the frame mounting elements 93. Thus, a frame mounting element 93 provides a different solution for maintaining specific span from the locking mechanism 92.

[0146] Figs. 12a and 12b further illustrate how frame mounting elements 93 may be located differently and comprise a different solution for mounting.

[0147] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the versatile methods and placements for mounting elements 93 are displayed. The different solutions and placements, enable the frame to fit different openings even horizontal openings such as floor openings. Additionally, it further increases the impact strength of the frame, leading to an increase in safety. Through a frame mounting element 93, the frame may also be adjusted and kept at a certain span. Thus, a frame mounting element 93 provides a different solution for maintaining specific span from the locking mechanism 92.

[0148] Fig. 13 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame comprising cover mounting elements 94 for fixating a cover to the frame, for example a cover 95 as described above with reference to figs 8a-8b.

[0149] The location or placement of the cover mounting elements 94 may vary and is not strictly placed on a corner element 2. The cover mounting elements 94 could for example be located below or on any different side of the visualized figure.

[0150] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, the versatile methods and placements for cover mounting elements 94 enable the frame to utilize many different materials as a cover. The cover may further increase protection by acting as a safeguard against e.g. wind, dust or different harmful particles that can be carried by air.

[0151] Figs. 14a, 14b and 14c illustrate systems 200 of reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 according to an embodiment of the invention. In fig. 14a the system 200 is shown as two reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 placed adjacent to one another, forming a horizontal system. In fig. 14b the system 200 is shown as two reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1 placed on top of each other, forming a vertical system. In fig. 14c a system 200 comprising four two-way adjustable frames 1 expands to larger dimensions both horizontally and vertically, than achievable by a single adjustable frame.

[0152] In the specifically illustrated embodiments, the versatile systems 200 can be used for different purposes. In general, the embodiment illustrates that multiple frames can be used to fit larger openings, which a single frame might not be able to fit.

[0153] Frame mounting elements 93 can be used to stack the different two reinforced two-way adjustable frames to one another. Thereby, maintaining the ability to withstand an impact, and keep the safety requirements.

[0154] Fig. 15 illustrates a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 comprising corner elements 2, side links 3 and multiple four-way junctions 4.

[0155] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, a reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1 is shown comprising four corners 2, six side links 3 and two four-way junctions 4. In a similar way, the number of side links 3 and four-way junctions 4 may vary in different embodiments depending on the use of the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1. The specifically illustrated embodiment comprising multiple four-way junctions 4, enable the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1, to be adjusted to an even larger maximum dimension first direction D1max and / or maximum dimension second direction D2max. Thus, the embodiment comprising multiple four-way junctions may act as an alternative, to a system 200 provided by multiple reinforced two-way adjustable frames 1.

[0156] In the specifically illustrated embodiment, multiple four-way junctions 4 also act as reinforcing the frame. Thus, the ability to withstand an impact, and keep the safety requirements, is maintained. Additionally, the multiple four-way junctions 4 decrease the gap size. Hence, increasing the number of four-way junctions 4, will decrease the gap size, and prevent physical objects from falling through the reinforced two-way adjustable frame 1.

[0157] It is emphasized that the different options and features described above with reference to the drawings, may be combined in various ways to form other embodiments. In particular, the reinforcement elements 82, 83, 84, stop mechanisms 91 and / or locking mechanisms, telescopic extension elements 61, cover 95, frame mounting elements 93 and / or cover mounting element 94 may be combined individually or together into any of the embodiments described.List of reference signs:
