AI Technical Summary
Existing food packaging with hybrid materials, such as cardboard and plastic, faces challenges in stability and ease of production, particularly in securing the lid to the shell, due to the difficulty in manufacturing and rigidity issues with cardboard knobs, leading to an unstable connection.
The design incorporates a second tab with a rectangular section and a rounded section adjoining it, which facilitates easy insertion and centering when the lid is placed on the shell, creating a more stable connection without the need for three-dimensional structures like knobs, and allows for automatic engagement when the first tab is bent around the folding axis.
This design enhances the stability and ease of production of the packaging by ensuring a secure lid-shell connection, even when the lid is placed crookedly, while reducing manufacturing complexity and improving handling and stackability.

Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a packaging, in particular for food, having the features of the preamble of claim 1.
[0002] Such packaging comprises a tray and a lid which can be placed thereon, wherein at least one first flap is provided which is connected to the tray via a fold line, wherein the fold line extends along a fold axis.
[0003] Packaging for food products, such as cakes, pastries, ready meals, or salads, is known. It consists of a plastic tray with a hat-shaped plastic lid placed on top. At least the plastic of the lid, and possibly also the plastic of the tray, can be transparent. Such packaging is also referred to as blister packs.
[0004] It has already been proposed to make the tray out of cardboard or paperboard to reduce plastic waste. However, previously known "hybrid" packaging of this type has several disadvantages, particularly with regard to handling and / or stability, including the retention of the attached lid on the tray and / or manufacturing.
[0005] A tray according to the prior art is disclosed in EP 3 705 415 A1. Opposing side walls of the tray have triangular hollow channels on their outer sides, which are formed by folding over first and second stiffening sections and gluing an adhesive section adjoining the second stiffening section to the outer side of a respective wall section of the tray. The second stiffening sections delimit the triangular hollow channels on the underside and can have openings into which the knobs of the attached lid engage. This tray is easy to handle and offers good stability as well as a stable lid holder, but its production is associated with increased complexity. The space required for stacking is also increased due to the hollow channels formed on the outer sides of the opposing side walls.
[0006] EP4071067A1 represents an improvement because instead of a hollow channel, only a tab and a beveled section of the lid are used to secure the lid.
[0007] However, even in these cases, nubs are still required on the lid to ensure a certain degree of form fit with the shell. What all of the described designs have in common is that the entire lid is preferably made of plastic.
[0008] If the proportion of cardboard or paperboard is to be increased in comparison, the first problem that arises is that the knobs of the lid made of cardboard or paperboard are more difficult to produce and will probably also have reduced rigidity, which will lead to a poorer attachment of the lid to the tray.
[0009] To solve this problem, it is known to design a shell in such a way that in the shell and / or in the at least one first tab there is a dividing line which meets the fold line at least at two points, so that at least one second tab is produced between the fold axis and the dividing line, the lid has at least one counter surface and at least one opening, preferably in the form of an elongated hole, and the at least one counter surface is arranged on the lid in such a way that it bends the at least one first tab away from the at least one opening when the lid is placed on the shell, wherein the at least one second tab is guided through the at least one opening.
[0010] Such packaging is known, for example, from US 3,195,798, US 3,326,447, US 4,930,681, or US 4,960,238. However, it is still disadvantageous that the at least one second tab either only provides insufficient hold of the lid to the tray, or that the at least one second tab, even with a sufficiently stable connection, is difficult to thread into the at least one opening.
[0011] The object of the present invention is therefore to create a packaging that offers a stable yet easy-to-produce connection between the tray and the lid.
[0012] According to the invention, it is therefore provided that the at least one second tab has a rectangular section and a rounded section adjoining the rectangular section, preferably on a long side of the rectangular section.
[0013] A key advantage of a second tab designed in this way is that the at least one second tab can be guided more easily through the at least one opening, especially if the lid is placed crookedly or at an angle, for example. In other words, the rounded section creates a centering effect.
[0014] In addition, the resistance when the at least one second tab passes through the at least one opening is reduced compared to a substantially polygonal design of the at least one second tab.
[0015] At the same time, such an embodiment of the at least one second tab results in the at least one second tab protruding further from the opening in the lid, whereby a more stable connection between the lid and the shell can be established.
[0016] Furthermore, according to the invention, only a counter surface and an opening need to be present on the lid, so that no three-dimensional structures, such as knobs, are required.
[0017] Because the at least one second tab is guided through the opening when the lid is put on, a positive connection is created which, due to the special inventive design of the at least one second tab, is more stable than is usual with conventional food packaging, and which, on the other hand, is particularly easy to produce.
[0018] In particularly preferred embodiments, the at least one second tab is guided into the at least one opening by bending the at least one first tab around the bending axis. The connection between the tray and the lid can thus be realized particularly easily and occurs practically automatically when the lid is placed on the tray because the bending of the at least one first tab is induced by the counter surface on the lid.
[0019] Terminologically, a distinction is made between the bending line and the bending axis. The bending axis can be understood as an axis along which the bending line extends and around which the rotation of the at least one first tab and the at least one second tab relative to the shell occurs during bending. It should be noted that the bending axis must be an imaginary axis that has no interruptions or the like. In this respect, the bending axis can also be understood as a continuation of the bending line.
[0020] In particularly preferred embodiments, the bend line and the bend axis are straight.
[0021] Along the dividing line, the at least one second tab is separated from the shell and / or the at least one first tab by material. Furthermore, a clearance of a certain width may be present between the at least one second tab and the shell and / or the at least one first tab. In preferred embodiments, however, the clearance is as small as possible, for example, only in the form of a slit in the material of the shell and / or the at least one first tab.
[0022] The material of the shell and / or the at least one first tab present between the parting line and the bending axis is referred to as at least one second tab, since it can move independently of the shell and, in certain embodiments, independently of the at least one first tab due to the material separation.
[0023] In preferred embodiments, however, the at least one second tab is materially connected to the at least one first tab via the bending axis, so that the at least one first tab and the at least one second tab pivot together about the bending axis when bent.
[0024] The counter surface can, for example, simply be a horizontally oriented surface of the lid. When the lid is placed on the tray, the at least one first tab is then deflected, for example, by the counter surface, which preferably leads to the insertion of the at least one second tab into the at least one opening.
[0025] A further advantage of the invention can result from the fact that the tab rests on the counter surface and / or another surface of the lid when the lid is placed on the tray, thus providing a certain degree of stabilization.
[0026] When guiding the at least one second tab through the at least one opening, it may be necessary for the at least one second tab to undergo a certain degree of deformation. This can sometimes be advantageous to achieve a better hold of the lid on the tray. However, some embodiments may allow for a certain amount of play.
[0027] An elongated hole can be particularly advantageous as at least one opening, in particular if the length of the elongated hole corresponds to a width of the at least one tab.
[0028] It should be noted that in certain embodiments the lid can be used as a bowl and vice versa.
[0029] Protection is further sought for the packaging according to claim 15. If, for example, a tray made of plastic is to be used to achieve the object of the invention, the opening in the form of an elongated hole can be provided on the tray and / or on the lid according to the invention such that the elongated hole tapers from a center of the elongated hole to the ends of the elongated hole.
[0030] Tabs or projections intended to work with the slotted hole to secure the lid to the tray can be inserted more easily, especially if the lid is placed slightly crooked or tilted on the tray. By tapering the slotted hole toward the ends, a centering function can be achieved.
[0031] In particularly preferred embodiments, a first longitudinal edge of the elongated hole is straight and a second longitudinal edge of the elongated hole creates a, preferably linear, taper of the elongated hole towards the ends of the elongated hole.
[0032] For this purpose, the second longitudinal edge is preferably the one which faces the bowl if the elongated hole is arranged on the lid, and the one which faces the lid if the elongated hole is arranged on the bowl.
[0033] It is understood by those skilled in the art that a taper towards the ends is equivalent to a thickening towards the middle starting from the ends of the slot.
[0034] This embodiment of the invention can be realized with trays made of plastic and / or cardboard and / or paperboard.
[0035] Of course, the embodiments of the invention according to claims 1 and 15 can be combined with each other.
[0036] Further preferred embodiments are defined in the dependent claims.
[0037] In one embodiment, it can be provided that the rounded section has a basic shape of a circular segment, preferably wherein the corners of at least one side of the rectangular section, preferably that side to which the rounded section adjoins, are rounded.
[0038] The basic shape of the at least one first tab and / or the at least one second tab can be supplemented by further geometric features. For example, rounded portions and / or chamfers can be provided.
[0039] The at least one second tab can have at least three free edges, wherein at least one, preferably exactly one, of the at least three edges has a, preferably completely, round shape, preferably wherein the at least three edges are each connected to one another via curves.
[0040] Particularly preferably, it can be provided that two of the at least three free edges are arranged substantially parallel to one another and the at least one edge, which has a round shape, connects the two substantially parallel edges to one another.
[0041] The transition between the rounded edge and the essentially parallel edges can be rounded.
[0042] Free edges can be understood as those edges of a tab which are not mechanically connected to any other part or section of the tray (or the lid when not placed on the tray).
[0043] The dividing line can be arranged in the shell and the folding line can have an interruption between the at least two points at which the dividing line meets the folding line, so that a folding of the at least one first tab along the folding line leads to a pivoting movement of the at least one second tab.
[0044] These embodiments may be particularly preferred because they allow for automatic insertion of the at least one second tab into the at least one opening. Alternatively or additionally, such embodiments can achieve a locking effect by having the at least one first tab rest against the counter surface. If an attempt is made to move the at least one second tab out of the at least one opening by bending the at least one tab around the bending axis, the at least one first tab initially inhibits this movement. Only when the packaging is slightly deformed can the lid then be removed.
[0045] In particularly preferred embodiments, when the lid is in place on the tray the at least one first tab at least partially rests against the counter surface and / or the at least one second tab passes through the opening.
[0046] The at least one second tab can be larger than the at least one opening. This prevents the at least one first tab from accidentally or undesirably passing through the at least one opening.
[0047] The at least one first tab may have a substantially trapezoidal basic shape, preferably with the longer base side coinciding with the bending axis.
[0048] In certain embodiments, the lid can be pivotally connected to the tray by means of a hinge. In such embodiments, the lid is therefore not separated from the tray. According to the invention, the lid can be placed on the tray by pivoting the lid relative to the tray.
[0049] The tray and / or lid can be folded from a flat sheet and optionally glued (e.g., tight bonding, external bonding and / or internal bonding).
[0050] The dividing line and / or at least one opening may be punched out.
[0051] The crease line can be realized, for example, through a perforation, a creasing line, a thinning of the material, or through the shape of the tray together with the at least one first flap as a desired crease line. A corresponding perforation can, of course, also be punched.
[0052] The tray and / or lid can be made at least partially of cardboard and / or paperboard, preferably with a viewing window on the top side of the lid. Except for the viewing window and / or adhesive, the tray and / or lid can preferably be made entirely of cardboard or paperboard.
[0053] Of course, designs without a viewing window are also conceivable, although this can be chosen depending on the application. For example, a viewing window can be quite advantageous for presentations at a food retail counter, whereas a viewing window may not be necessary for delivery food, for example.
[0054] Cardboard can be understood as solid board and / or corrugated board (e.g. mini-flute, in particular F-flute and / or G-flute).
[0055] The viewing window can, for example, consist of a transparent plastic film (e.g. PET, OPP, biofilms, cellophane and / or acetate films) that is glued to the rest of the lid.
[0056] The basis weight of the cardboard or paperboard from which the tray and / or lid are made can be more than 150 g / m², preferably more than 225 g / m², and particularly preferably 300 g / m² or more. A basis weight of 150 g / m² or more is generally referred to as cardboard. A basis weight of 225 g / m² or more, or sometimes even 300 g / m² or more, is usually referred to as paperboard.
[0057] Preferably, more than one first tab and / or more than one second tab may be provided.
[0058] In particularly preferred embodiments, it can be provided that on at least two opposite sides of the packaging there are two first tabs, two second tabs, a counter surface and two openings, wherein the counter surface on the lid is arranged in such a way that it bends the respective first tabs away from the respective openings when the lid is placed on the tray, wherein the respective second tabs are guided through the respective openings.
[0059] All measures described with regard to the invention can be implemented for the two opposite sides described. Finally, it is of course also possible to provide the inventive connection between the tray with at least one first tab, at least one second tab, a counter surface, and at least one opening on more than two sides of the packaging (for example, on all four sides).
[0060] The counter surface does not have to be continuous.
[0061] For good stackability, the tray and / or lid can have side walls that are at a non-zero angle to the vertical when the packaging is oriented as intended. Trays and / or the lid according to the invention can preferably be stacked separately from one another.
[0062] Preferably, an angle of the side walls of the bowl and / or the lid to the vertical can be between 1° and 50°, particularly preferably between 3° and 25° and most particularly preferably between 5° and 10°.
[0063] The shell and / or the lid can have at least one projection which is arranged and designed such that the at least one projection passes through the at least one opening when the lid is placed on the shell.
[0064] Further advantages and details of the invention are apparent from the figures and the accompanying description. These show: Fig. 1 a tray of an embodiment of a package according to the invention, Fig. 2 a lid of an embodiment of a package according to the invention, Fig. 3 an embodiment of a package according to the invention, Fig. 4 an embodiment of a package according to the invention according to the invention in the state in which the lid is placed on the tray, Fig. 5 a tray of an embodiment of a package according to the invention, Fig. 6 embodiments of the invention in two configurations, Figs. 7a to 7d greatly simplified representations for understanding an embodiment of the invention, Figs. 8 and 9 embodiments of floor plans of sheets that can be folded into a tray and a lid of an embodiment of a package according to the invention, Fig. 10 an embodiment of a lid (shown as a sheet) with a viewing window, Figs. 11 to 15 a further embodiment of the invention, Fig.16 to 18 show a further embodiment of the invention, and Figs. 19 to 23 show a further embodiment of the invention.
[0065] Fig. 1 shows a bowl 2, which is made of cardboard.
[0066] The shell 2 has first tabs 4 and second tabs 7, which are present on opposite sides of the shell 2.
[0067] Fig. 2 shows a lid 3. In this embodiment, the lid 3 is made entirely of cardboard.
[0068] There could be a viewing window 10 made of plastic, for which Fig. 10 The viewing window 10 could, for example, be glued to the rest of the lid 3.
[0069] The lid 3 has openings 9 which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the lid 3.
[0070] In Fig. 3the packaging 1, namely the tray 2 together with the lid 3, is shown, wherein the lid 3 is slightly offset from the tray 2 so that various elements of the embodiment are visible.
[0071] The first tabs 4 are connected to the shell 2 via the bend line 5. The bend line 5 is interrupted but generally extends along the bend axis X.
[0072] At those points where the fold line 5 is interrupted, the second tabs 7 can be seen.
[0073] The second tabs 7 have a rectangular section 7a and a rounded section 7b adjoining the rectangular section 7a. In this embodiment, the rounded section 7b adjoins a longitudinal side of the rectangular section 7a.
[0074] This design makes it easier to insert the second tabs 7 into the openings 9 and, in particular, fulfills a centering function if the lid 3 is placed crookedly or tilted onto the tray 2. Furthermore, the lid 3 is held more securely on the tray 2, since the second tabs 7 protrude further from an opening 9 of the lid 3 due to the rectangular section 7a.
[0075] In particular, rounded section 7b has a basic shape of a circular segment, wherein the corners of at least one side of the rectangular section 7a, in this case the corners of that side to which the rounded section 7b adjoins, are rounded.
[0076] Such an embodiment is particularly suitable for allowing easy insertion of the second tabs 2 into the openings 9 and also for centering them.
[0077] In this exemplary embodiment, the second tabs 7 have three free edges, wherein one of the three edges has a, preferably completely, round shape and wherein the at least three edges are each connected to one another via curves.
[0078] In particular, two of the three free edges are arranged substantially parallel to each other, wherein the third, round edge connects the two substantially parallel edges.
[0079] The design of the second tabs is particularly also in the Figure 5 clearly visible. The rectangular section 7a is indicated by a dashed rectangle.
[0080] The underside of the lid 3 can act as a counter surface 8, so that the first tabs 4 are bent inward when the lid 3 is placed on the tray 2. At the same time, the second tabs 7 are bent outward so that they are automatically guided through the openings 9 in the lid when the lid 3 is placed on the tray 2.
[0081] This fully fitted state of the lid 3 on the bowl 2 is in Fig. 4 It can be seen that the length of the openings 7 designed as elongated holes essentially corresponds to the width (along the bending axis X) of the second tabs 7.
[0082] For clarification, the Figures 5 and 6 further representations of the tray 2 and the packaging 1 are shown in additional perspectives.
[0083] In particular, based on Fig. 5It can be seen that the first tabs 4 extend over the entire length of the two opposite sides of the shell 2. This has the additional advantage of stabilizing the shell 2 because buckling of these sides is avoided or at least suppressed.
[0084] The Fig. 7a to 7d are highly simplified schematic representations of an embodiment of the invention.
[0085] Fig. 7a shows an embodiment of a shell 2 in a side view and Fig. 7b shows the same in a sectional view. The interruptions of the fold line 5 were indicated by providing the connected parts of the fold line 5 with reference symbols.
[0086] In the shell 2, there are dividing lines 6 which meet the bending line 5 at those points where the bending line 5 is interrupted. Since the dividing lines 6 are spaced from the bending axis X, second tabs 7 are formed. Due to this construction, the second tabs 7 pivot when the first tabs 4 are bent about the bending axis X at the same time (see Fig. 7b ).
[0087] Starting from Fig. 7b shows Fig. 7c how an underside of the lid 3 can act as a counter surface, which bends the first tab 4 counterclockwise, whereby the second tabs 7 also pivot accordingly.
[0088] The openings 8 are indicated in the lid 3 as a diagonal line. It can be seen that the second tabs 7 are guided toward the openings 8 while the lid 3 is lowered onto the tray 2.
[0089] When the fitting process is completed, the second tabs 7 automatically pass through the openings 8 in the lid 3, which Fig. 7d is shown.
[0090] In the Figures 8 and 9 Examples of sheets that can be used to produce a package 1 according to the invention by folding and gluing operations are shown, namely the sheet 11 for the tray 2 and the sheet 12 for the lid 3.
[0091] Basically, those lines of Fig. 8 and 9 , which are not outline lines, are fold lines along which the sheets are to be folded. These include the exceptions described below for dividing lines 6 and openings 9.
[0092] Hatched areas are adhesive surfaces 13. By gluing the corresponding surfaces, the bowl 2 and the lid 3 are held in a desired shape.
[0093] The material of the sheet 11 is to be separated along the dividing lines 6 - in this example in the shape of a circular arc - for example by punching or cutting, so that the second tabs 7 can move relative to the rest of the shell 2.
[0094] The openings 9 in the sheet 12 must of course also be cut out, for example by punching or cutting operations (slot punching).
[0095] Fig. 10 shows an embodiment of a lid 3 with a viewing window 10, wherein the lid 3 is shown in its initial form as a sheet 12. Otherwise, the embodiment of Fig. 10 those from Fig. 9 .
[0096] The Figures 11 to 15 show a further embodiment of the invention, wherein the Fig. 11 analogous to Fig. 2 , the Fig. 12 analogous to Fig. 3 , the Fig. 13 analogous to Fig. 4 , the Fig. 14 analogous to Fig. 5 as well as the Fig. 15 analogous to Fig. 6The shell of this embodiment is designed in the same way as the one from Fig. 1 .
[0097] In contrast to the execution according to the Figures 2 to 6 The openings, each designed as an elongated hole, are of the embodiment according to the Fig. 11 to 15 from the center of the slots with a taper towards the ends of the slots. This is particularly good in Fig. 11 In addition, the cover 3 of this embodiment is also designed as in the embodiment from the Figures 2 to 6 .
[0098] The elongated holes of this embodiment have a first longitudinal edge 16 which is straight, and a second longitudinal edge 17 which, starting from the center of the elongated hole, causes a linear taper of the elongated hole.
[0099] In this embodiment, the second longitudinal edge 17 of the elongated holes faces the shell 2.
[0100] The design of the openings 9 creates a centering function which facilitates the insertion of the second tabs 7 into the openings 9, in particular when the lid 3 is tilted or placed crookedly on the tray.
[0101] Embodiments in which both the second tabs 7 and the openings 9 have a centering function as described may be particularly preferred because the centering function is optimized here.
[0102] The Figures 16 to 18 show a further embodiment of the invention. Here, the bowl 2 and the lid 3 are not separate from each other, but are pivotally connected to each other via a hinge 14.
[0103] Fig. 16 shows a partially open position, Fig. 17 a closed position and Fig. 18 a more open position.
[0104] In this embodiment, the hinge 14 is designed as a crease line of a folded sheet. Film hinges and the like would also be possible.
[0105] On the opposite side, the design of the embodiment with a first tab 4, second tabs 7, a fold line 5, openings 9 in the form of elongated holes and a counter surface 8 for connecting the tray 2 to the lid 3 corresponds to those embodiments from the Fig. 1 to 6 or 11 to 15 or 7a to 7d .
[0106] The embodiments according to the Figures 11 to 15 and / or in accordance with the Figures 16 to 18 and / or according to the Figures 20 and 23 can be realized by folded and / or punched and / or glued sheets, as is the case, for example, in connection with the Figures 8 to 10 was described.
[0107] The Figures 19 to 23 show a further embodiment of the invention. The Figures 19 , 21 and 22each show the shell 2 in different views, the Figures 10 and 23 each show the cover 3 in different views.
[0108] In this embodiment, the lid 3 has a viewing window 10.
[0109] In this embodiment, projections 15 are used instead of tabs, which interact with openings 9 in the form of elongated holes when the lid 3 is placed on the bowl 2.
[0110] The projections 15, in turn, have a rectangular section 7a and an adjoining rounded section 7b, which can provide a centering function if the lid 3 is placed crookedly or tilted onto the tray 2. The rectangular section 7 allows for a more stable connection.
[0111] According to the invention, the elongated holes are provided with a taper starting from their center towards the ends of the elongated holes.
[0112] For this purpose, the elongated holes each have a first longitudinal edge 16, which is linear, and a second longitudinal edge 17, which, starting from the center of the elongated hole, creates a linear taper of the elongated hole. The second longitudinal edge 17 faces the shell 2.
[0113] Unlike in the other embodiments, in this embodiment the tray 2 is made of plastic, which means that, for example, packaging contents that have a higher liquid content can also be held.
[0114] In principle, in addition to the embodiments presented in more detail here, other embodiments are also conceivable within the scope of the invention. For example, the first and second tabs as well as the openings could be provided on multiple sides rather than just two opposite sides (for example, all four sides).
[0115] The rectangular basic shape of the packaging 1 is also not absolutely necessary within the scope of the invention. For example, triangular, pentagonal, or hexagonal—generally polygonal—basic shapes are also conceivable.
[0116] The at least one second tab 7 could, in principle, also be located within the at least one first tab 4 and separated from the at least one second tab 7 by the at least one dividing line 6. Although this does not necessarily result in automatic insertion of the second tabs 7 into the openings 8, a connection to the lid 3 is nevertheless created, which may be adequate for certain applications. legend to the reference numbers:
