Description

Battery pack for motor vehicle

[0001] The invention relates to a battery assembly for a motor vehicle, as well as a method of manufacturing such a battery assembly.

[0002] A battery pack for a motor vehicle having several battery modules is already known in the prior art, for example from documents US 2021 / 0143495 A1, DE 10 2017 210 343 A1, WO 2020 / 179355 A1 and US 2020 / 0365956 A1. In order to enable optimal operation, the battery modules must be temperature-controlled. For this purpose, the battery pack comprises a heat exchanger, which allows the temperature of the battery modules to be regulated by means of a fluid circulating in the heat exchanger.

[0003] However, the manufacturing and assembly of this battery pack is relatively complex and expensive. Furthermore, the size of such a battery pack is relatively large.

[0004] There is therefore a need to produce a battery pack that allows for a large number of battery modules while optimizing cooling and safety, such as protection against thermal runaway, and with a particularly simple design that can be easily adapted to the power requirements of the motor vehicle to be equipped.

[0005] The invention aims in particular to simplify the assembly of a battery assembly comprising temperature-regulated battery modules.

[0006] To this end, the invention relates to a battery assembly for a motor vehicle, comprising:

[0007] - heat exchange panels arranged one above the other along an axis E, each heat exchange panel being corrugated in the form of crenellations comprising alternately, along an axis C orthogonal to the axis E, a peak and a hollow, a fluid passage conduit being formed at least one of the hollow of each crenellation and the peak of each crenellation,

[0008] - battery modules arranged in parallel and in a staggered manner, so as to form several rows of battery modules along the C axis, formed one above the other along the E axis, each row being offset along the C axis relative to the single adjacent row or relative to two adjacent rows which are aligned with each other along the C axis so as to form several columns of battery modules along the E axis, each battery module comprising at least one battery cell, preferably in the form of a pocket, each battery module being housed in at least one slot so as to exchange heat with the fluid.

[0009] Thus, such a battery pack allows for a large number of battery modules while optimizing cooling and safety, such as protection against thermal runaway, and this with a particularly simple design that is easily adaptable according to the power requirements of the motor vehicle to be equipped.

[0010] By "pouch cell battery", in English "pouch cell battery", it is meant in particular that, in accordance with the usual meaning of this expression in the field of batteries, the electrolyte and the electrodes are received in the internal space of the battery cell in the form of a pouch, a pouch-shaped envelope surrounding this internal space. The envelope includes for example an insulating outer layer, a metal layer, and possibly an adhesive inner layer. The insulating outer layer prevents the permeation of external moisture and / or gases, and is for example composed of a polymer material. The metal layer makes it possible to improve the mechanical strength of the envelope. The metal layer is for example formed either by an alloy of iron, carbon, chromium and manganese, or by steel, or by nickel, or by a nickel alloy, or by aluminum. The electrodes extend out of the casing as conductive tabs, the casing being sealed around these conductive tabs, which thereby form the electrodes of the pouch battery cell when the pouch battery cell is assembled. Preferably, the shape of the pouch battery cell is rectangular.

[0011] Depending on other optional features of the battery pack, taken alone or in combination:

[0012] - The battery modules are rechargeable. In other words, the battery modules are secondary type.

[0013] - Each battery module is compressed between two heat exchange panels.

[0014] - Each battery module comprises at least one prismatic battery cell. By "prismatic battery cell" it is meant in particular that, in accordance with the usual meaning of this expression in the field of batteries, the electrolyte and the electrodes are received in the internal space of the prismatic battery cell, an envelope in the form of a rigid housing surrounding this internal space. The envelope is for example based on metal, for example aluminum, or is formed by a plastic or polymer material.

[0015] - Each battery module includes at least one battery cell in the form of a pouch.

[0016] - Heat exchange panels are made of aluminum. Therefore, the manufacture of these panels is economical.

[0017] - Heat exchange panels are extruded profiles. Therefore, the manufacture of these panels is particularly simple and economical.

[0018] - Heat exchange panels are formed by a plurality of stamped and welded plates, which delimit the fluid passage conduits between them. Thus, the manufacture of these panels is particularly simple and economical.

[0019] - The heat exchange panels are stacked on top of each other.

[0020] - The heat exchange panels are identical. This simplifies the design and reduces costs.

[0021] - The fluid is a thermal regulation fluid, preferably liquid. For example, a coolant already used in the motor vehicle for other applications can be used, which is then available to ensure thermal regulation of the battery pack.

[0022] - Each battery module is arranged in a hollow or in a peak of a slot.

[0023] - In each heat exchange panel, the hollow and / or the top of each slot has a shape complementary to that of a battery module. Thus, the installation and the maintenance in position of the battery module along the C axis are particularly facilitated during the assembly of the battery assembly. In addition, the thermal regulation of the battery modules is optimized, because the thermal regulation is also carried out on the side walls of each battery module.

[0024] - The battery modules are identical. This simplifies the design and reduces costs.

[0025] - Each battery module comprises, stacked along the E axis, a first battery cell, preferably in the form of a pouch, and a second battery cell, preferably in the form of a pouch, a layer of compressible material being interposed between the first battery cell and the second battery cell, each battery cell comprising two cellular electrodes opposite each other transversely with respect to the E axis and with respect to the C axis, each pair of adjacent cellular electrodes being welded to each other so as to form an electrode of the battery module. Indeed, the battery cells, for example the battery cells in the form of a pouch, deform by swelling then deflation during successive charge and discharge cycles. Thus, the presence of the compressible layer makes it possible to compensate for significant forces due to the charge and discharge cycles, which would otherwise be applied to the heat exchange panels, due to the swelling and then deflation of the battery cells. By "layer of compressible material", it is particularly necessary to understand that the layer of compressible material is more compressible along the E axis than the other elements of the battery module, namely the first battery cell and the second battery cell.

[0026] - In each heat exchange panel, a fluid passage duct is formed in the hollow of each slot and a fluid passage duct is formed at the top of each slot. Thus, the thermal regulation of the battery modules is optimized, because the thermal regulation is carried out both in the hollow of each slot and at the top of each slot. Each battery module is therefore necessarily framed by at least two fluid passage ducts.

[0027] - A corrugated heat exchange plate in the form of crenellations comprising, alternately along the axis E, a peak and a hollow, is interposed between a first heat exchange panel and a second heat exchange panel, such that the hollows of the crenellations of the heat exchange plate are in contact and aligned with the peaks of the crenellations of the first heat exchange panel, and the peaks of the crenellations of the heat exchange plate are in contact and aligned with the hollows of the second heat exchange panel. Thus, thermal protection against thermal runaway is improved, due to the fact that the battery modules are isolated from each other by both the heat exchange panels and the heat exchange plate.

[0028] - The slots of the heat exchange plate are trapezoidal in shape. Thus, several heat exchange plates can be easily stacked during storage before manufacturing the battery pack. In addition, such a trapezoidal shape simplifies the insertion of battery modules into the slots.

[0029] - The slots of the heat exchange panels are trapezoidal in shape. Thus, several heat exchange panels can be easily stacked during storage before manufacturing the battery pack. In addition, such a trapezoidal shape simplifies the insertion of the battery modules into the slots.

[0030] - The slots of the heat exchange plate and the slots of the heat exchange panels have an identical width along the C axis. Thus, the relative positioning of the heat exchange plate with respect to the heat exchange panels is simplified.

[0031] - The hollow and / or the top of each slot of the heat exchange plate has a shape complementary to that of a battery module. Thus, the installation and the maintenance in position of the battery module along the C axis are particularly facilitated during the assembly of the battery assembly. In addition, the thermal regulation of the battery modules is optimized, because the thermal regulation is also carried out on the side walls of the battery modules in contact with the heat exchange plate.

[0032] - The peaks and valleys of the heat exchange plate and the peaks and valleys of the heat exchange panels all have the same width along the C axis. This simplifies the design and reduces costs.

[0033] - In each heat exchange panel, each conduit is a through conduit, and each n-tuple of adjacent conduits, preferably each pair of adjacent conduits, is fluidically connected by a connecting fitting, so as to form at least one fluid passage meander. Thus, the manufacture of the heat exchange panels is simplified, because the conduits are through conduits. Leaktightness control is also simplified because the fittings are arranged at the ends of the conduits. Indeed, such an arrangement makes it possible to test the leaktightness of the heat exchange panels prior to their assembly to form the battery assembly.

[0034] - The connecting fitting is made of polymer material, preferably thermoplastic. Thus, the connecting fitting is lightweight and is obtained in a simple and economical way.

[0035] - The connecting fitting is formed from an electrically insulating material.

[0036] - In each heat exchange panel, each conduit is in the form of a straight channel opening on either side of the heat exchange panel.

[0037] - The connecting fitting is fixed to the heat exchange panel by at least one fixing element, preferably at least one screw.

[0038] - The connecting joint comprises a plate, which is configured to form a bearing surface for two adjacent electrodes of battery modules of a column, the two electrodes being welded together, preferably by laser. Thus, the manufacture of the battery assembly is simplified.

[0039] - The wafer is formed at one end of the connecting joint which is distant from the heat exchange panel, the connecting joint having support tabs, the wafer being supported only by the support tabs. Thus, even if the wafer is damaged during the welding of the two electrodes during the manufacture of the battery assembly, for example due to the heat released during welding, the risk of damaging the rest of the connecting joint, including its fluidically conductive part, is greatly reduced.

[0040] - On each heat exchange panel, a fluid inlet connection is disposed at one end of a conduit formed at one end of the heat exchange panel, and a fluid outlet connection is disposed at one end of a conduit formed at another end of the heat exchange panel. Thus, each heat exchange panel has a single fluid inlet and a single fluid outlet, and a plurality of heat exchange passes formed by the conduits.

[0041] - Each fluid inlet connector is connected to a distributor having a single fluid inlet, the fluid inlet preferably being in the form of a quick connector, and each fluid outlet connector is connected to a manifold having a single fluid outlet, the fluid outlet preferably being in the form of a quick connector. This simplifies the fluid connection of the battery assembly to the fluid circulation system of the motor vehicle.

[0042] - The battery assembly has axial clamping elements, which compress the heat exchange panels and battery modules along the E axis. This maintains the integrity of the battery assembly in a simple manner.

[0043] - The axial clamping elements surround the battery assembly, and are clamping bands or clamping straps. Thus, such an assembly allows easy disassembly of the battery assembly for reuse or recycling of the elements constituting it.

[0044] The invention also relates to a motor vehicle comprising a battery assembly as described above.

[0045] The invention also relates to a method of manufacturing a battery assembly as described above, which comprises the following steps:

[0046] - manufacturing heat exchange panels, preferably by extrusion, each heat exchange panel being corrugated in the form of crenellations comprising alternately, along an axis C orthogonal to the axis E, a peak and a hollow, a fluid passage conduit being formed at least one of the hollow of each crenellation and the peak of each crenellation, each conduit being a through conduit,

[0047] - on each heat exchange panel, for each n-uplet of adjacent conduits, preferably for each pair of adjacent conduits, fix a connecting connector fluidly connecting the n-uplet of adjacent conduits, preferably the pair of adjacent conduits to each other, so as to form at least one fluid passage meander, the connecting connector comprising a plate, which is configured to form a bearing surface,

[0048] - on each heat exchange panel, arrange a fluid inlet connection at one end of a conduit formed at one end of the heat exchange panel, and arrange a fluid outlet connection at one end of a conduit formed at another end of the heat exchange panel, and preferably, test the fluid tightness by circulating fluid from the fluid inlet connection to the fluid outlet connection,

[0049] - arranging the heat exchange panels one above the other along an axis E and arranging in parallel and in a staggered manner battery modules each comprising at least one battery cell, preferably in the form of a pocket, such that each battery module is housed in at least one slot so as to exchange heat with the fluid,

[0050] - have axial clamping elements, which compress the heat exchange panels and the battery modules along the E axis,

[0051] - on at least one plate, fold one over the other and then weld together two adjacent electrodes of battery modules arranged one above the other along the axis E.

[0052] This provides a particularly simple, economical manufacturing process for a battery pack, making it possible to obtain a compact battery pack, while ensuring excellent thermal regulation of the battery modules. Brief description of the figures

[0067] In all figures, the same references refer to the same elements.

[0068] In this detailed description, the following embodiments are examples. Although the description refers to one or more embodiments, this does not mean that the features apply only to a single embodiment. Single features of different embodiments may also be combined and / or interchanged to provide other embodiments.

[0069] The diagrammatically represents a motor vehicle 1 comprising a battery assembly 3 and a cooling circuit 5 for a thermal regulation fluid, preferably liquid, provided with a heat exchanger 7, which exchanges, for example, heat with the ambient air. In this example, the motor vehicle 1 is a battery electric vehicle and thus comprises an electric motor 9 configured to drive the movement of the motor vehicle 1.

[0070] The battery assembly 3, as shown in the, comprises several battery modules 11 visible in particular in FIGS. 3 to 6, which are rechargeable, and several heat exchange panels 13 according to a first variant.

[0071] According to the three variants shown in Figures 5, 10 and 11, the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are arranged one above the other along an axis E, each heat exchange panel 13, 13' being corrugated in the form of crenellations 14, 14' alternately comprising, along an axis C orthogonal to the axis E, a peak 15, 15' and a hollow 17, 17'. A fluid passage conduit 19, 19' is formed at at least one of the hollow 17, 17' of each crenellation 14, 14' and the peak 15, 15' of each crenellation 14, 14'. The fluid is the thermal regulation fluid, preferably liquid. The heat exchange panels 13, 13' are stacked on top of each other. In the examples presented, the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are identical. Furthermore, in each heat exchange panel 13, 13', the hollow 17, 17' and / or the top 15, 15' of each slot 14, 14' has a shape complementary to that of a battery module 11.The slots 14, 14' of the heat exchange panels 13, 13' have an identical width along the axis C.

[0072] According to these variants, the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are made of aluminum. According to one embodiment variant, the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are extruded profiles. According to another embodiment variant, the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are formed by a plurality of stamped plates welded together, which delimit between them the fluid passage conduits 19, 19'. The slots 14, 14' of the heat exchange panels 13, 13' are for example trapezoidal in shape.

[0073] The battery modules 11 are arranged in parallel and in a staggered manner. For example, each battery module 11 delivers a voltage of approximately 4 volts. The battery modules 11 form several rows of battery modules 11 along the C axis, formed one above the other along the E axis, each row being offset along the C axis relative to the single adjacent row – in other words, when the row is located at one end – or relative to two adjacent rows which are aligned with each other along the C axis so as to form several columns of battery modules 11 along the E axis. More specifically, in this example, the battery assembly 3 comprises several rows and several columns of battery modules 11, for example two rows of four battery modules 11 as shown in FIGS. 5, 10 and 11.

[0074] Each battery module 11 comprises at least one battery cell 20, preferably in the form of a pocket, each battery module 11 being housed in at least one slot 14, 14' so as to exchange heat with the fluid. Thus, each battery module 11 is compressed between two heat exchange panels 13, 13'. In this example, the battery modules 11 are identical. In order to carry out the compression, the battery assembly 3 comprises axial clamping elements 21, which compress the heat exchange panels 13, 13' and the battery modules 11 along the axis E. In this example, as shown in the, the axial clamping elements 21 surround the battery assembly 3, and are clamping bands or clamping straps. The at least one battery cell 20, preferably in the form of a pocket, is for example of the Lithium-Ion type.

[0075] According to a first variant embodiment of the battery modules 11, shown in Figures 3 and 4, each battery module 11 comprises, stacked along the axis E, a first battery cell 20, preferably in the form of a pocket, and a second battery cell 20, preferably in the form of a pocket, a layer of compressible material 22 being interposed between the first battery cell 20 and the second battery cell 20. The left-hand view referenced 3A represents an uncompressed battery module 11, and the right-hand view referenced 3B represents a compressed battery module 11, as it is arranged in the battery assembly 3 in the assembled state. Each battery cell 20 comprises two cellular electrodes opposite each other transversely with respect to the axis E and with respect to the axis C. In this example, each pair of adjacent cellular electrodes are welded to each other so as to form a +, - electrode of the battery module 11.

[0076] According to a second variant, not shown, of the battery modules 11, each battery module 11 comprises a single battery cell, preferably in the form of a pocket.

[0077] According to a third variant embodiment of the battery modules 11 shown in figures 12 and 13, each battery module 11 comprises, stacked along the axis E, a first prismatic type battery cell 20' and a second prismatic type battery cell 20', a layer of compressible material 22 being interposed between the first prismatic type battery cell 20' and the second prismatic type battery cell 20'.

[0078] According to a fourth variant, not shown, of embodiment of the battery modules 11, each battery module 11 comprises a single prismatic type battery cell.

[0079] According to a first variant embodiment of the heat exchange panels 13 shown in the, in each heat exchange panel 13, a fluid passage conduit 19 is formed in the hollow 17 of each slot 14 and a fluid passage conduit 19 is formed at the top 15 of each slot 14. This is notably visible in the, which represents a heat exchange panel 13 according to the first variant.

[0080] Furthermore, a heat exchange plate 23 corrugated in the form of crenellations 24 comprising alternately, along the axis E, a peak 25 and a hollow 27, is interposed between a first heat exchange panel 13 and a second heat exchange panel 13, such that the hollows 27 of the crenellations 24 of the heat exchange plate 23 are in contact and aligned with the peaks 15 of the crenellations 14 of the first heat exchange panel 13, and that the peaks 25 of the crenellations 24 of the heat exchange plate 23 are in contact and aligned with the hollows 17 of the second heat exchange panel 13. The diagrammatically represents such a heat exchange plate 23.

[0081] In this variant, the notches 24 of the heat exchange plate 23 and the notches 14 of the heat exchange panels 13 have an identical width along the axis C. The hollow 27 and / or the top 25 of each notch 24 of the heat exchange plate 23 has a shape complementary to that of a battery module 11.

[0082] This pattern resulting from the stacking of a first heat exchange panel 13, a heat exchange plate 23, and a second heat exchange panel 13, can be repeated. The slots 24 of the heat exchange plate 23 are for example trapezoidal in shape.

[0083] In each heat exchange panel 13, each conduit 19 is a through conduit. More precisely, each conduit 19 is in the form of a rectilinear channel opening out on either side of the heat exchange panel 13.

[0084] Each n-tuple of adjacent conduits 19, preferably each pair of adjacent conduits 19 as shown in the, is fluidically connected by a connecting connector 29, so as to form at least one fluid passage meander. The connecting connector 29 is made of polymer material, preferably thermoplastic. The connecting connector 29 is also formed from an electrically insulating material. The connecting connector 19 is fixed to the heat exchange panel 13 by at least one fixing element, preferably at least one screw. To allow such fixing, the heat exchange panel 13 comprises for example a through hole, not shown, formed in the connection zone between the top 15 and the hollow 17 of each slot 14.

[0085] The connecting connector 29 comprises a plate 31, which is configured to form a bearing surface for two adjacent electrodes +, - of battery modules 11 of a column, the two electrodes +, - being welded together, preferably by laser. As shown in the, the plate 31 is formed at one end of the connecting connector 29 which is distant from the heat exchange panel 13, the connecting connector 29 comprising support tabs 33, the plate 31 being supported only by the support tabs 33.

[0086] Furthermore, on each heat exchange panel 13, a fluid inlet connection 35 is arranged at one end of a conduit 19 formed at one end of the heat exchange panel 13, and a fluid outlet connection 37 is arranged at one end of a conduit 19 formed at another end of the heat exchange panel 13. In this example, the fluid inlet connection 35 and the fluid outlet connection 37 each comprise a plate 41, which is configured to form a bearing surface for two adjacent electrodes +, - of battery modules 11 of a column. The two electrodes +, - are welded together, preferably by laser. As shown in the, the plate 41 is formed at one end of the fluid inlet connection 35, respectively of the fluid outlet connection 37, which is distant from the heat exchange panel 13.The fluid inlet connection 35, respectively the fluid outlet connection 37 comprises support lugs 43, the plate 41 being supported only by the support lugs 43. Each fluid inlet connection 35 is connected to a distributor 45 provided with a single fluid inlet 46, the fluid inlet 46 preferably being in the form of a quick coupling. Each fluid outlet connection 37 is connected to a manifold 47 provided with a single fluid outlet 49, the fluid outlet 49 preferably being in the form of a quick coupling. The fluid inlet 46 and the fluid outlet 49 are thus configured to be fluidically connected to the cooling circuit 5 of the motor vehicle 1.

[0087] According to an alternative embodiment of the heat exchange panels 13', shown in the, in each heat exchange panel 13', a fluid passage conduit 19' is formed in the hollow 17' of each slot 14' or a fluid passage conduit 19' is formed at the top 15' of each slot 14'. Thus, a battery assembly 3 according to a second alternative comprises several heat exchange panels 13' of the type shown in the, which are arranged alternately rotated by a half-turn around the axis E and / or rotated by a half-turn around the axis C, which are stacked successively according to the following pattern, as shown in the: the first according to the position shown in the, the second rotated by a half-turn around the axis E, the third rotated by a half-turn around an axis orthogonal to the plane formed by the axes E and C, the fourth rotated by a half-turn around the axis C.This pattern can be repeated several times in whole or in part, for example at the ends along the E axis.

[0088] According to a third variant embodiment of the battery assembly 3, the battery assembly 3 comprises several heat exchange panels 13' of the type shown in the, which are stacked successively according to the following pattern, as shown in the: the first according to the position shown in the, the second rotated half a turn around the axis E. This pattern can be repeated several times in whole or in part, for example at the ends along the axis E.

[0089] An example of a manufacturing method for a battery assembly 3 as defined above is described below. Such a manufacturing method comprises the following steps:

[0090] - manufacturing heat exchange panels 13, preferably by extrusion, each heat exchange panel 13 being corrugated in the form of crenellations 14 comprising alternately, along an axis C orthogonal to the axis E, a top 15 and a hollow 17, a fluid passage conduit 19 being formed at least one of the hollow 17 of each crenellation 14 and the top 15 of each crenellation 14, each conduit 19 being a through conduit,

[0091] - on each heat exchange panel 13, for each n-uplet of adjacent conduits 19, preferably for each pair of adjacent conduits 19, fix a connecting connector 29 fluidly connecting the n-uplet of adjacent conduits 19, preferably the pair of adjacent conduits 19 to each other, so as to form at least one fluid passage meander, the connecting connector 29 comprising a plate 31, which is configured to form a bearing surface,

[0092] - on each heat exchange panel 13, arrange a fluid inlet connection 35 at one end of a conduit 19 formed at one end of the heat exchange panel 13, and arrange a fluid outlet connection 37 at one end of a conduit 19 formed at another end of the heat exchange panel 13, and preferably, test the fluid tightness by circulating fluid from the fluid inlet connection 35 to the fluid outlet connection 37,

[0093] - arranging the heat exchange panels 13 one above the other along an axis E and arranging the battery modules 11 in parallel and in a staggered manner, such that each battery module 11 is housed in at least one slot 14 so as to exchange heat with the fluid,

[0094] - arrange axial clamping elements 21, which compress the heat exchange panels 13 and the battery modules 11 along the axis E,

[0095] - on at least one plate 31, fold one over the other then weld together two adjacent electrodes +, - of battery modules 11 arranged one above the other along the axis E.

[0096] The invention is not limited to the embodiments presented and other embodiments will become clear to those skilled in the art. It is in particular possible to produce a battery pack comprising several battery assemblies 3 arranged parallel to each other, electrically connected to each other by bus bars. List of references
