AI Technical Summary

Technical Problem

Current video coding techniques, such as VVC, face limitations in achieving superior coding efficiency due to deficiencies in the cross-component prediction design, particularly in reducing cross-component redundancy and optimizing bit-rate savings while maintaining video quality.

Method used

The method involves enhancing the cross-component prediction tool by using a filter pattern with linear-weighting coefficients based on pre-operated luma sample values, obtained from external luma and chroma sample differences, to predict internal chroma sample values, thereby improving coding efficiency.

Benefits of technology

This approach leads to enhanced coding efficiency by effectively reducing redundancy between luma and chroma components, resulting in improved bit-rate savings and perceptual quality in video compression.

Abstract

The present disclosure provides a method for decoding video data, comprising: obtaining a video block from a bitstream; obtaining internal luma sample values of the video block, external luma sample values of an external region of the video block and external chroma sample values of the external region; determining a filter pattern based on the external luma sample values and the external chroma sample values, wherein the filter pattern includes one or more linear-weighting coefficients for corresponding one or more pre-operated luma sample values, and wherein the one or more pre-operated luma sample values include at least one pre-operated luma sample value obtained based on sample differences between external luma sample values, predicting, with the filter pattern, internal chroma sample values of the video block based on the internal luma sample values; and obtaining decoded video block using the predicted internal chroma sample values.
