Description

[0001] The invention relates to a template for marking at least one drill hole position on a door having two main surfaces and an end surface having a mortise for a mortise lock and a recess for the forend of the mortise lock, wherein the template comprises a marking member to be positioned adjacent, in particular abutting and / or parallel to a main surface of the door. The marking member comprises at least one marking means for marking the at least one drill hole position on a main surface. The template further comprises a support having an end for abutment formed to be positioned in the recess, and e.g to abut the bottom of the recess and / or the end surface of the door, and, e.g. once fastened in the recess, to enable holding the marking member adjacent a main face. The present invention also relates to a method for marking at least one drill hole position on a door using such a template.

[0002] A mortise lock is a lock which is mounted in an elongated cut-out, a mortise, in an end surface of a door. A mortise lock comprises a forend for fastening the mortise lock to the door. The forend is usually embedded in a relatively shallow elongated recess surrounding the mortise when the mortise lock is mounted in the door. Typically, the contours of the forend substantially match the contours of the recess. The forend may be fastened to the bottom of the recess using fastening means, e.g. screws. The mortise lock further comprises a lock case comprising at least one connection point and / or opening for door hardware, e.g. a spindle, a cylinder and / or a thumb turn, and possibly at least one hole for accommodating at least one fastening means, e.g. through bolts, for fastening escutcheons and / or roses to the door. The door comprises at least one hole for accommodating the door hardware when a mortise lock is mounted in the mortise and operatively coupled to the door hardware. A mortise lock typically comprises a latch bolt or roller configured to extend through the forend and engage a strike plate positioned on a door frame when the door is closed. The mortise lock may comprise a dead bolt configured to extend through the forend when the mortise lock is in locked state. In that case, the strike plate typically comprises an opening to receive the dead bolt when the mortise lock is in locked state.

[0003] Mortise locks have various lock case depths. The longitudinal centerline of the mortise may coincide with the longitudinal centerline (extending in the height direction of the door) of the end surface of the door or may be positioned eccentrically with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the end surface of the door. The end surface of the door may be stepped in a direction transverse to the longitudinal (or height) direction, the step forming a lip along a longitudinal edge of the end surface. Doors comprising such a lip are known as lipped doors.

[0004] Newly manufactured doors in which a mortise lock is yet to be mounted are often delivered to a customer already provided with a mortise for mounting the mortise lock. Openings in a main surface of the door for accommodating door hardware are however often not provided by the manufacturer as there is a large variety of mortise locks and door hardware a customer might opt for.

[0005] As a consequence, customers are frequently tasked with marking at least one drill hole position on at least one main surface of the door corresponding to the chosen mortise lock and / or door hardware. Templates exist for marking at least one drill hole position on at least one main surface of the door for various types of mortise locks and / or door hardware.

[0006] NL 2030047 relates to a template for marking positions of drill holes on a door, the door in its end face being provided with a mortise for a mortise lock and a recess for the forend of the mortise lock. The template is provided with a L-shaped profile part and a fitting plate. The L-shaped profile part is provided with a short leg, intended for abutment to the end surface of the door and a long leg, intended for abutment to a main surface of the door. The long leg is provided with at least one marking opening for marking a position of a drill hole. The fitting plate is connected to the short leg through an adjustable connection and is configured to be accommodated in the recess for the forend. The adjustable connection allows movement of the fitting plate exclusively in a direction perpendicular to the long leg.

[0007] It is an object of the present invention to provide an improved template for marking at least one drill hole position on at least one main surface of a door.

[0008] To this end the template is characterized in that it comprises positioning means for adjusting the position of the at least one marking means, e.g. a marking opening, stamp and / or pin, of the marking member, in particular by adjusting the position of the marking member, with respect to the end for abutment of the support, e.g. in a direction parallel to the normal direction defined by the end for abutment of the support, i.e., once mounted on a door, typically parallel to the main surface of the door.

[0009] The positioning means may comprise at least one guide rail for the marking member extending in a direction parallel to the normal direction defined by the end for abutment and / or a (click-in or slide-on / in) system for the marking member having multiple connection points aligned in a direction parallel to the normal direction defined by the end for abutment. The positioning means may further comprise the support and the marking member having at least one pair of mating connectors and / or fasteners, e.g. a support having a supporting edge to be received in a marking member having multiple cut-outs arranged at an interval configured to enable adjusting the position of the at least one marking means in a direction parallel to the normal defined by the end for abutment of the support.

[0010] It is preferred that this direction is the same as the direction of inserting the end for abutment in the recess for the forend of the mortise lock.

[0011] In an embodiment, the template is a kit of parts comprising at least one support, e.g. two supports, and at least one separate marking member, i.e. the support(s) and the marking member(s) are provided as separate components to be assembled before using the template. This allows packaging of the template in a compact manner. In an embodiment, the kit comprises two or more marking members, preferably with different marking means, e.g. different patterns of marking means.

[0012] In an embodiment, the support is configured to be extendable from the end for abutment of the support in a direction along the normal defined by the end for abutment. The support may be extendable by mounting spacing elements to the end for abutment of the support and / or comprise a telescopic structure. The spacing may be removably mounted to the support through a click-in system. By extending the support, the position of the at least one marking means along the width of the door may be adjusted in mounted state.

[0013] In an embodiment, the marking member comprises at least one duplicate set of the at least one marking means configured to be aligned in a direction parallel to the normal defined by the end for abutment at an interval. This is an alternative for extending the support from the end for abutment in a direction along the normal defined by the end for abutment.

[0014] In an embodiment, the support comprises at least one opening for receiving fastening means, such as a screw, which opening has an axis, e.g. a central axis, substantially parallel to the normal defined by the end for abutment.

[0015] In an embodiment, the contour of the end for abutment of the support substantially matches at least part of the contour of the recess, e.g. a top and / or bottom section of the contour.

[0016] In an embodiment, the template is constructed of a metal and / or a polymer, and / or a cellulose-based material. The template may be constructed through injection molding.

[0017] In an embodiment, the position of the marking member with respect to the support is adjustable in a transverse direction, e.g. transverse to a plane defined by the longitudinal (height) axis of the support and the normal defined by the end for abutment.

[0018] In an embodiment, the marking member(s) is (are) formed to be substantially plate-like, e.g. is (are) formed as a flat plate.

[0019] In an embodiment, the at least one marking means have an axis of rotational symmetry through the centerpoint of the at least one marking means parallel to a longitudinal direction of the support when the template is mounted on a door, making the marking member suitable for marking drill positions on both main surfaces of the door.

[0020] In an embodiment, the marking member comprises at least one marking means for marking a door handle drill hole position and / or a at least one marking means for marking a cylinder drill hole position and / or at least one marking means for marking a drill hole position for through bolts or any combination of the aforementioned marking means.

[0021] In an embodiment, multiple marking means are arranged on the marking member(s) in such a manner that they define at least one distance between a drill hole position for a spindle and a cylinder drill hole position according to the PC 55, PC 63, PC 72, PC 85, PC 92, or PC 110 standard.

[0022] In an embodiment, the marking member comprises at least one marking means, e.g. at least one slot, for marking lines on a main surface of the door parallel to the longitudinal direction of the support when the template is mounted on the door.

[0023] In an embodiment, the distance between a supporting edge and an end for abutment of the support is at least 8 mm and at most 50 mm, preferably at most 30 mm for bridging the height of a lip of a lipped door.

[0024] The invention also relates to a method for marking at least one drill hole position on a main surface of a door using a template as described above.

[0025] The method for marking at least one drill hole position on a main surface of a door may comprise the step of removably fastening the support in the recess, e.g. using the at least one opening for receiving fastening means having an axis in particular parallel to the normal defined by the end for abutment of the support, in particular by inserting a fastening means, e.g. a screw, in the at least one opening and anchoring it in the bottom of the recess.

[0026] The method for marking at least one drill hole position on a main surface of a door may comprise the step of assembling the template from a kit of parts, in particular connecting a marking member to at least one support.

[0027] The present invention provides a universal template for accurately and efficiently marking at least one drill hole position on a main surface of a door. The template according to the present invention is suitable for marking at least one drill hole position on a main surface of the door regardless of the depth of the lock case to be inserted in the mortise, the thickness of the door, the position of the mortise with respect to the longitudinal centerline of the end surface of the door, and / or the presence of a lip on the end surface of the door. Furthermore, the marking member may be applied on both main surfaces of the door.

[0028] For the sake of completeness, attention is drawn to the following patent publications.
