Description

[0001] The present invention is directed to a longitudinal luminaire with a longitudinal luminaire body, a longitudinal luminaire cover and two end caps covering opposite axial sides of the luminaire. The present invention is further directed to a luminaire system comprising a plurality of such luminaires being arranged in a row.

[0002] Longitudinal luminaires with a luminaire body, a luminaire cover and two end caps covering the opposite axial sides are known. Usually, the end caps are fit over a side edge of the luminaire body and luminaire cover. The so assembled luminaire is then mounted to a ceiling or the like. In case of a plurality of such luminaires being arranged in a row, neighbouring luminaires may share an end cap element resulting in the plurality of luminaires being assembled completely in a row before being mounted to a mounting surface. In case of a need for access to the interior of the luminaire body, e.g. for maintenance or replacement of electronic components, the luminaire or luminaires need to be dismounted completely from the mounting surface. This results in a long maintenance time.

[0003] It is thus an object of the present invention to provide a longitudinal luminaire with corresponding end caps as well as a luminaire system having such luminaires, which allow for an easy and effective access to the interior of the / each luminaire, e.g. for maintenance or replacement reasons.

[0004] This object is achieved by the subject-matter of the independent claims. The dependent claims study further the central idea of the present invention.

[0005] According to a first aspect, the present invention is directed to a luminaire having a longitudinal extension along an extension axis; i.e. a longitudinal luminaire. The luminaire comprises a luminaire body extending longitudinally along the extension axis. The luminaire body defines a lighting space for receiving a light source. The luminaire further comprises a luminaire cover extending longitudinally along the extension axis. The luminaire cover covers the lighting space at a side opposite to the luminaire body so as to allow light from the lighting space - e.g. emitted by a light source received in the lighting space - to exit the luminaire for lighting purposes. The luminaire further comprises two end caps provided at opposite axial sides (e.g. opposite axial ends) of the lighting space, respectively. Each of the end caps comprises a first part being attached to the luminaire body, and a second part being attached to the luminaire cover. The two fist parts together with the luminaire body form a body part. The two second parts together with the luminaire cover form a cover part. The body part and the cover part are designed such that they are detachably connectable to each other along a mounting axis extending substantially orthogonal to the extension axis so that the first and second part of each end cap together covers the respective axial side of the lighting space in an assembled state of the luminaire.

[0006] By providing the longitudinal luminaire with a two-piece end cap, it is possible to separate the end cap in the first part being attached to the luminaire body and the second part being attached to the luminaire cover. Hence, these two end cap parts can be securely attached to the respective luminaire elements, namely the luminaire body and the luminaire cover, respectively, while still allowing an easy separation of the luminaire cover from the luminaire body thus resulting in an easy and effective access of the lighting space, if desired. In the assembled state of the luminaire, the two-piece end cap still allows for a sufficient covering of the opposite axial sides. Hence, the overall function of a longitudinal luminaire with its two end caps can be obtained, while access to the inner part of the luminaire is facilitated. Therefore, a light source or other lighting electrics (e.g. including drivers, electrical connectors, sensors, etc.) can be easily reached, e.g. for maintenance reasons or the like, even in a case in which the luminaire body - more precisely the body part - remains mounted to a mounting surface at the location of operation.

[0007] The first parts can each be axially fit, preferably push fit, along the extension axis, onto the luminaire body for radial form fit. Hence, the respective first parts can be easily and securely attached to the luminaire body. Alternatively or additionally, the first parts can also each be fixed to the luminaire body by a body fixing element, like a screw or a form-fit structure. Hence, common means can be used for effective attachment of the respective first parts to the luminaire body.

[0008] The second parts may each be axially fit, preferably push fit, along the extension axis, onto the luminaire cover for radial form fit. Hence, an easy and effective attachment of the respective second parts to the luminaire cover can be obtained. Alternatively or additionally, the seconds parts may also each be fixed to the luminaire cover by a cover fixing element, like a screw or a form-fit structure. Hence, common means can be used for a effective attachment of the respective second parts to the luminaire cover.

[0009] The lighting space, in the assembled state of the luminaire, may be substantially entirely delimited by the luminaire body, the luminaire cover and the end caps. Hence, these elements allow for a secure encasing of the lighting space, thus securely covering and protecting any electrical or electronic means being stored within the lighting space, like the light source and other lighting electrics (e.g. drivers, electric connectors and the like).

[0010] The luminaire may further comprise, preferably for each end cap, an end cap fixing element, like a screw, for fixing the respective first and second parts relative to each other in the assembled state. Hence, the first and second parts can be effectively secured in the assembled state. Also, the end cap and thus the whole luminaire can be effectively stiffened so as to increase its resistance.

[0011] The body part, preferably the luminaire body and / or at least one of the first parts, on the one hand and the cover part, preferably the luminaire cover and / or at least one of the second parts, on the other hand each comprise corresponding connection structures, like snap-fit elements, for detachably connecting the body part and the cover part. Hence, the end cap itself can be provided with corresponding connection means to connect the body part and the cover part in an assembled state. Hence, assembly can be facilitated. Also, the corresponding connection structures can be provided at a position, as desired, for most effective mechanical connection.

[0012] In the assembled state, the end caps, preferably the respective first part and second part together, respectively define a receiving space outside the lighting space. Hence, the end caps provide a corresponding receiving space for any desired use. In a preferred embodiment, the receiving space preferably faces axially sideways with respect to the extension axis, so that the receiving space is less visual from a front side of the luminaire while still allowing for easy access, if desired.

[0013] The luminaire may further comprise an electrical element, preferably an electrical interface like a Zhaga interface, e.g. a Zhaga Book 18 interface. Hence, the luminaire can be equipped with any desired electrical element and preferably with an electrical interface for easily integrating the luminaire in any desired functional environment, and for easily equipping the luminaire with any desired means, e.g. sensors and the like.

[0014] The electrical element may be arranged in the receiving space. Hence, the electrical element can be easily accessed even in an assembled state of the luminaire.

[0015] A functional section of the electrical element can be arranged in an opening of one of the end caps, preferably its first part and / or its second part, so as to be exposed to an outside of the luminaire. Hence, the functional section can be provided for an effective use. For instance, the functional section can be a sensing section of a sensor for an effective sensing.

[0016] The luminaire may further comprise an end cover for covering at least one of the end caps, preferably the receiving space thereof if present, at an outside of the luminaire. Hence, the luminaire can be provided with a high aesthetic appearance. Also, a potential receiving space can be easily covered and its interior effectively protected from outer mechanical influences.

[0017] The luminaire cover may comprise or be a clear cover and / or a diffusor cover and / or a lens element. Hence, the luminaire cover can be provided for influencing the light emission, as desired.

[0018] The luminaire may further comprise a light source being arranged in the lighting space in the assembled state. Hence, the luminaire can already come along with a corresponding light source for any desired light emission and light emission characteristic.

[0019] The light source can preferably be mounted to the luminaire body; preferably detachably mounted to the luminaire body. Hence, the light source can be securely provided and carried even when removing the cover body.

[0020] The light source may be an LED light source, preferably comprising an LED module and / or an LED light engine. Hence, a well-known, efficient, energy-saving and compact light source can be provided.

[0021] The luminaire may further comprise lighting electrics, like an LED driver and / or an electrical connecter. Hence, the luminaire can come along with any desired equipment for running and / or controlling the luminaire.

[0022] The lighting electrics can preferably be arranged in the lighting space in the assembled state. Hence, the lighting electrics can be effectively and securely stored within the lighting space, preferably being arranged at a position close to the light source, thus resulting in a compact luminaire.

[0023] The lighting electrics can preferably be mounted to the luminaire body; more preferred detachably mounted to the luminaire body. Hence, the lighting electrics can be effectively provided even in a case when detaching the cover body, e.g. for maintenance or replacement reasons, so that the lighting electrics can be easily accessed without demounting the luminaire body or body part, thus facilitating mounting and maintenance.

[0024] According to another aspect, the present invention is directed to a luminaire system comprising at least two of the luminaires according to the present invention (i.e. as described herein above). The luminaires are arranged in a row along their extension axes with the extension axes preferably being oriented parallel to each other, with one of their end caps, respectively, being arranged face-to-face.

[0025] Hence, the advantages already defined for the luminaire itself also apply for the luminaire system. In addition, even a luminaire system with at least two or more luminaires in a row allow for an easy access of the lighting space by simply removing the individual cover body without demounting any luminaire - e.g. at least the body part - from the continuous run.

[0026] The luminaire system may further comprise a mechanical connector for being mechanically connected to the respective end caps being arranged face-to-face, so as to mechanically connect the neighbouring luminaires. Hence, the mechanical connector allows for an adequate fixation of the neighbouring luminaires as well as a proper alignment between the luminaires alongside the continuous run.

[0027] Each of the end caps may comprise connection structures for axially receiving the mechanical connector, preferably by way of a push fit connection, for radial form fit. Hence, the connector can be easily attached while allowing for an effective radial form fit. Hence, assembly can be facilitated.

[0028] The luminaire system may further comprise a connection element, like a screw, for fixing the mechanical connector to the respective end cap. Hence, the mechanical connector can be effectively fixed to the respective end caps and thus effectively connect the two neighbouring luminaires for a proper alignment between the luminaires alongside the continuous run.

[0029] The connection element may be provided in a connection direction being substantially orthogonal to the respective extension axis, thus resulting in an easy provision of the respective connection element, while allowing for a highly effective fixation.

[0030] The mechanical connector may have a ring shape. Hence, the mechanical connector may have a simple design while leaving sufficient space, if desired. Hence, the mechanical connector may have a simple, material-saving, but stable design for an effective connection of two neighbouring luminaires. The mechanical connector having a ring shape may preferably extend circumferentially about the respective extension axes while being arranged to connect the neighbouring luminaires. Hence, the mechanical connector can be provided at a highly effective position.

[0031] The end caps being arranged face-to-face together may define a connection space, which may preferably be formed by their neighbouring receiving spaces. Hence, a space for any desired purpose can be provided, which connection space can be easily accessed, if desired.

[0032] The connection space may be designed to receive, preferably entirely house, the mechanical connector when being arranged to mechanically connect the neighbouring luminaires. Hence, the mechanical connector can be provided in a way to be substantially or completely invisible from the outside, which positively affects the aesthetical appearance of the luminaire.

[0034] The figures show different views and assembling states of a luminaire 1 according to the present invention. The luminaire 1 has a longitudinal extension along an extension axis X, thus being a longitudinal luminaire 1 as can derived from all figures.

[0035] The luminaire 1 comprises a luminaire body 2 extending longitudinally along the extension axis X, as can be best derived from Figs. 7, 12, 13 and 22. The luminaire body 2 defines a lighting space 5 for receiving a light source 8.

[0036] The luminaire 1 may further comprise the light source 8 preferably arranged in the lighting space 5 in the assemble state. The light source 8 may preferably be mounted to the luminaire body 2; preferably detachably mounted to the luminaire body 2. The light source 8 may be an LED light source, preferably comprising an LED module and / or an LED light engine.

[0037] The luminaire 1 may further comprise lighting electrics 9, like an LED driver and / or an electrical connector. The lighting electrics 9 are preferably arranged in the lighting space 5 in the assembly state. The lighting electrics 9 are also preferably mounted to the luminaire body 2; more preferred detachably mounted to the luminaire body 2.

[0038] The luminaire 1 further comprises a luminaire cover 3 extending longitudinally along the extension axis X, as can also be best derived from Figs. 7, 13 and 22.

[0039] As can be exemplarily derived from Figs. 1, 9 and 15, the luminaire cover 3 covers the lighting space 5 at a side opposite to the luminaire body 2 so as to allow light from the lighting space to exit the luminaire 1 for lighting purposes.

[0040] The luminaire cover 3 preferably comprises or is a clear cover and / or a diffusor cover (as shown in the embodiments and best derivable from Figs. 15 and 17) and / or a lens element. The luminaire cover 3 may also comprise any desired means for influencing the light emission characteristic or even the light characteristic (e.g. light conversion particles and the like).

[0041] The luminaire 1 further comprises two end caps 4 provided at opposite axial sides 50, 51 of the lighting space 5, respectively. This can be best derived from Figs. 1 and 9, for instance.

[0042] Each of the end caps 4 comprises a first part 41 being attached to the luminaire body 2, and a second part 42 being attached to the luminaire cover 3, as can be best derived from Figs. 7, 13 and 22.

[0043] The two first parts 41 together with the luminaire body 2 form a body part B. The two second parts 42 together with the luminaire cover 3 form a cover part C.

[0044] The body part B and the cover part C are designed such that they are detachably connectable to each other along a mounting axis Y extending substantially orthogonal to the extension axis X (see, for instance, Figs. 7 and 13) so that the first and second part 41, 42 of each end cap 4 together covers the respective axial side 50, 51 of the lighting space 5 in an assembled state of the luminaire 1, as can be best derived from Figs. 1 and 9.

[0045] As can be best derived from Fig. 7, the first parts 41 can each be axially fit, preferably push fit, along the extension axis X, onto the luminaire body 2 for radial form fit. Alternatively or additionally, the first parts 41 may each be fixed to the luminaire body 2 by a body fixing element 21, like a screw or a form-fit structure preferably being integral to the body part B.

[0046] Also with reference to Figs. 7 and 13, the second parts 42 may each be axially fit, preferably push fit, along the extension axis X, onto the luminaire cover 3 for radial form fit. Alternatively or additionally, the second parts 42 may each be fixed to the luminaire cover 3 by cover fixing element 22, like a screw or another form-fit structure preferably being integral to the cover part C.

[0047] The lighting space 5, in the assemble state of the luminaire 1, can be substantially entirely delimited by the luminaire body 2, the luminaire cover 3 and the end caps 4; i.e. by the body part B and the cover part C. This can be best derived from Figs. 1 and 9.

[0048] The luminaire 1 may further comprise, preferably for each end cap 4, an end cap fixing element 40, like a screw, for fixing the respective first and second parts 41, 42 relative to each other in the assembled state, preferably along a fixing direction F being parallel to the extension axis X. This can be best derived from a combination of the respective Figs. 3 to 6.

[0049] The body part B, preferably the luminaire body 2 and / or at least one of the first parts 41, on the one hand and the cover part C, preferably the luminaire cover 3 and / or at least one of the second parts 42, on the other hand each may comprise corresponding connection structures 20, 30, like snap-fit elements, for detachably connecting the body part B and the cover part C. In the shown embodiment, the connection structures 20, 30 can be best seen in Fig. 8, in which they are provided by longitudinal structural elements of the luminaire body 2 and the luminaire cover 3, respectively. These connection structures 20, 30 are exemplarily shown as snap-fit elements, which can be released by pressing the luminaire cover 3 (here its lateral side walls 31, 32) towards the lighting space 5 thus releasing the connection structures 30 of the luminaire cover 3 from the connection structures 20 of the luminaire body 2. The respective distal ends of the connection structures 20, 30 are here angled in a way that the body part B and the cover part C can be easily connected when being assembled, as the snap-fit elements 20, 30 are easily brought into their connected state, while the respective angle prevents the connections structures 20, 30 from being released after being connected, unless applying a defined pressure to the luminaire cover 3 (here the side walls 31, 32, as schematically illustrated by the arrows).

[0050] In the assembled state, the end caps 4, preferably their respective first part 41 and second part 42 together, respectively define a receiving space 44 outside the lighting space 5; here preferably facing axially sideways with respect to the extension axis X. This can be best derived from Figs. 4 and 6.

[0051] The luminaire 1 may further comprise an electrical element 6, preferably being an electrical interface like saga interface, e.g. saga book 18 interface, as schematically shown in Fig. 4. Here, for example, the electrical element 6 can be arranged in the receiving space 44.

[0052] As exemplarily shown, a functional section 60 of the electrical element 6 may be arranged in an opening 46 of one of the end caps 4, preferably its first part 41 and / or its second part 42 (the latter is shown in the embodiments), so as to be exposed to an outside of the luminaire 1.

[0053] The luminaire 1 may further comprise an end cover 7 for covering at least one of the end caps 4, preferably the receiving space 44 thereof if present, at an outside of the luminaire 1. This is best shown from the combination of Figs. 1 to 4, 18 and 19.

[0054] With reference to Figs. 9 to 22, the present invention is also directed to a luminaire system 10 comprising at least to two of the luminaires 1 according to the present invention and as described herein above.

[0055] As can be derived, for instance, from Fig. 9, the luminaires 1 are arranged in a row along their extension axes X - here preferably oriented parallel to each other - with one of their end caps 4, respectively, being arranged face-to-face.

[0056] With particular reference to Figs. 10, 11 and 22, the luminaire system 10 may further comprise mechanical connector 11 for being mechanically connected to the respective end caps 4 being arranged face-to-face, so as to mechanically connect the neighbouring luminaires 1.

[0057] Each of the end caps 4 may comprise connection structures 43 for axially receiving the mechanical connector 11, preferably by way of a push fit connection, for radial form fit, as can be best seen in Fig. 10.

[0058] The luminaire system 10 may further comprise a connection element 12, like a screw, for fixing the mechanical connector 11 to the respective end cap 4, preferably in a connection direction D being substantially orthogonal to the respective extension axis X. This can be best derived from Figs. 16, 17, 21 and 22.

[0059] The mechanical connector 11 may have a ring shape (see Figs. 10 and 11), preferably extending circumferentially about the respective extension axes X when being arranged to connect the neighbouring luminaires 1, as can be best derived from Figs. 10 in combination with Figs. 13 and 22.

[0060] The end caps 4 being arranged face-to-face together define a connection space 14, as can be exemplarily derived from Figs. 13 and 22. The connection space 14 is preferably formed by the neighbouring receiving spaces 44 of the respective end caps 4.

[0061] The connection space 14 may be designed to receive, preferably entirely house, the mechanical connector 11 when being arranged to mechanically connect the neighbouring luminaires 1, as can be derived, for instance, from Figs. 10, 13 and 22.

[0062] As can be seen, for instance, in Figs. 10 and 11, the connector 11 may comprise an opening 16, which preferably is aligned with the opening 46, in the assembled state of the luminaire, so as to avoid a collision with an electrical element 6 being arranged in the end cap 4 and particularly in the opening 46. The opening 16 of the mechanical connector 11 may be closed with a removable knock out section 17 for selectively providing the opening 16 in the mechanical connector 11.

[0063] The present invention is not limited by the embodiments as described herein above as long as being covered by the appended claims.
