Description

[0001] LIGHTING DEVICE FOR SAFETY BARRIERS

[0002] Technical Field

[0003] The present invention relates to a lighting device for safety barriers.

[0004] Background Art

[0005] As is well known, a safety barrier is a safety device placed outside a roadway or as a traffic island in two-way roads for the purpose of improving the safety of drivers thus reducing the effects of accidents or skidding. Specifically, the safety barrier is designed to withstand an impact in order to contain the involved vehicle within the protected roadway, thus preventing encroachment into the oncoming lane or running off the road.

[0006] The safety barrier generally consists of a longitudinal barrier having an outer surface facing the roadway and supporting means associated with the longitudinal barrier on the opposite side with respect to its outer surface.

[0007] The safety barrier can be a guardrail and / or a barrier of the New Jersey type.

[0008] In the case of guardrails, the supporting means mostly consist of a substantially vertical supporting element anchored to the ground and of a substantially horizontal connecting element placed between the supporting element and the longitudinal barrier.

[0009] In the case of the New Jersey barrier, the supporting means are a base portion associated with the barrier and intended to be placed resting on the ground.

[0010] Situations often occur where the safety barrier may be a possible source of danger to road users. For example, in conditions of poor visibility, the user may not see well or at all the presence of the safety barrier and its development along the direction of the road flow.

[0011] Thus, it is well known that there is a need to make the safety barrier more visible to road users so that they can better follow the road and avoid crashing into the safety barrier itself.

[0012] To date, protective and lighting devices are known to be applied to the safety barrier to cover and light it in order to make it visible.

[0013] Such devices are provided with an LED strip which is anchored to the safety barrier by means of a protective body. The latter is shaped in such a way that it fully covers at least the longitudinal barrier of the safety barrier. In addition, such a protective body is made of polyurethane foam which allows giving elastic properties to the protective body, which are useful both for cushioning impacts and for applying the protective body itself to the barrier.

[0014] These devices do have some drawbacks related to the fact that the protective body completely covers the safety barrier, consequently being complex and expensive to manufacture, as well as difficult to install.

[0015] Additional drawbacks relate to the fact that the protective body is made of polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is a non-recyclable material. As a consequence, the supporting body so made is not suitable for application on safety barriers that extend over long stretches of road. In addition, the supporting body thus made is extremely dangerous in the case of impacts with heavy vehicles, such as e.g. trucks or buses, because it has insufficiently elastic characteristics to dissipate the impact effectively.

[0016] Description of the Invention

[0017] The main aim of the present invention is to devise a lighting device for safety barriers which allows improving the visibility of the safety barrier with which it is associated and of the road, while making it safer.

[0018] Another object of the present invention is to make a lighting device for safety barriers which is easy to assemble and install.

[0019] Another object of the present invention is to devise a lighting device for safety barriers which can overcome the aforementioned drawbacks of the prior art within the framework of a simple, rational, easy and effective to use as well as cost-effective solution.

[0020] The above objects are achieved by this lighting device for safety barriers having the characteristics of claim 1.

[0021] Brief Description of the Drawings

[0022] Other characteristics and advantages of the present invention will become more apparent from the description of a preferred, but not exclusive, embodiment of a lighting device for safety barriers, illustrated by way of an indicative, yet nonlimiting example, in the accompanying tables of drawings in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lighting device applied to a safety barrier, particularly a guardrail, in accordance with the present invention, Figure 2 is a detailed view of the lighting device in Figure 1, Figure 3 is a side view of the lighting device in Figure 1.

[0023] Embodiments of the Invention

[0024] With particular reference to these figures, reference numeral 1 globally denotes a lighting device for safety barriers.

[0025] According to the invention, the device 1 is configured to be associated with a safety barrier A in order to make it visible to drivers and, at the same time, illuminate the roadway. Preferably, the safety barrier A is a guardrail and / or a barrier of the New Jersey type. A lighting device 1 associated with a safety barrier of the guardrail type is shown in the figures.

[0026] As shown in Figure 1, the safety barrier A comprises at least one longitudinal barrier B having an outer surface C facing a roadway.

[0027] The safety barrier A is then provided with at least one supporting element D which can be laid on the ground and connectable to the barrier B to support it. Preferably, in the case of guardrails, the supporting element D is connected to the barrier B at the opposite surface from the outer surface C.

[0028] The barrier B mainly runs along its own longitudinal direction which, in use, is arranged substantially parallel to the roadway on which the safety barrier A is installed. In other words, the longitudinal direction of the barrier B is arranged substantially horizontally.

[0029] In the context of this disclosure, the terms “upper”, “lower”, “vertical” and “horizontal”, used with reference to the safety barrier A and to the lighting device 1, are meant to refer to the conditions of normal use, i.e., those wherein the safety barrier A is laid on the ground and the lighting device 1 is mounted on the safety barrier A, as visible from Figure 1.

[0030] The barrier B is bounded by at least one flap Ls, Li.

[0031] In the case of guardrails (shown in the figures), the barrier B is bounded on the top and on the bottom by at least one pair of flaps Ls, Li, the upper flap Ls and the lower flap Li, respectively. In actual facts, the barrier B extends by height between the pair of flaps Ls, Li, along a direction transverse to the longitudinal direction.

[0032] Again in the case of guardrails, preferably, the barrier B has a substantially wavy profile. In particular, the profile of the barrier B has a substantially sinusoidal pattern. Preferably, each flap Ls, Li is arranged substantially horizontally or inclined with respect to the horizontal direction. Preferably, each flap Ls, Li has a curved shape.

[0033] As visible from Figure 1, the supporting element D extends substantially vertically so as to raise the barrier B above the ground.

[0034] Preferably, the guardrail A has a plurality of supporting elements D arranged along the barrier B. Even more preferably, the guardrail A has at least one pair of supporting elements D arranged at the end portions of the barrier B.

[0035] On the other hand, in the case of a barrier of the New Jersey type, the barrier B is bounded by an upper flap Ls corresponding to the end portion of the barrier B. In such a case, the supporting element D is a base portion of the safety barrier which is adapted to rest on the ground.

[0036] Appropriately, the lighting device 1 comprises at least one visibility element 2 configured to emit a light radiation.

[0037] Advantageously, the device 1 is provided with at least one fastening element 3 provided with at least one housing 4 adapted to house the visibility element 2. The fastening element 3 is configured to fasten to the safety barrier A in a removable maimer. Specifically, the fastening element 3 is configured to fasten to at least one of either the barrier B or the supporting element D in a removable manner. In the present case, the fastening element 3 is configured to fasten to the barrier B in a removable manner.

[0038] Preferably, the fastening element 3 is configured to fasten to a flap Ls, Li of the barrier B.

[0039] The lighting device 1 is fastened to the safety barrier A so that the barrier is made visible to the drivers and, at the same time, it illuminates the road.

[0040] Conveniently, the fastening element 3 is made at least partly of an extruded plastic material. Such a material gives the lighting device 1 enough elasticity to allow effective dissipation of energy during an impact.

[0041] Such a conformation of the lighting device 1 also allows most of the surface area of the barrier B to be left free so that it can perform its protective function.

[0042] Advantageously, the fastening element 3 is made at least partly of at least one material selected from the list comprising: high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polycarbonate (PC), polyvinyl chloride (PVC), polypropylene (PP), aluminum, wood, metal, polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), ceramic, polymer resins, natural stones or mixtures thereof.

[0043] Preferably, the wood is milled wood.

[0044] Preferably, the fastening element 3 is made at least partly of a mixture of resins and natural stones. Even more preferably, such a mixture consists of KRION.

[0045] The fastening element 3 is obtained by laser machining and / or bending and / or injection molding and / or thermoforming and / or extrusion.

[0046] As mentioned above, the fastening element 3 is adapted to be fastened to the safety barrier A so as to position the visibility element 2 facing the roadway.

[0047] Preferably, the visibility element 2 is of the type of a light strip, such as e.g. an LED strip.

[0048] In other words, the visibility element 2 has a substantially elongated shape.

[0049] In actual facts, the visibility element 2 mainly extends along its own longitudinal direction.

[0050] In use, the visibility element 2 is arranged substantially parallel to the barrier B, that is, it is arranged substantially horizontally.

[0051] Preferably, the visibility element 2 substantially extends along the entire length of the fastening element 3.

[0052] In other words, the visibility element 2 has a length substantially equal to the length of the fastening element 3.

[0053] The visibility element 2 is configured to emit a light radiation which can be made visible by a driver passing along the roadway.

[0054] As visible in Figure 2, the visibility element 2 has a shape which is substantially complementary to the housing 4 of the fastening element 3. Such a conformation allows the visibility element 2 to be stably housed within the housing 4 by shape coupling.

[0055] Advantageously, the visibility element 2 has an optic 5 made at least partly of at least one material selected from polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polycarbonate (PC).

[0056] In addition, the visibility element 2 has generation means for generating a light radiation.

[0057] The visibility element 2 then comprises connector elements and / or electrical connection elements (not shown in the figures) configured to electrically connect the visibility element 2 to a power source, such as e.g. a street cabinet.

[0058] As visible from Figure 2, the fastening element 3 comprises a supporting body 6 of elongated shape. In particular, the supporting body 6 extends along its own longitudinal direction between one pair of ends 7. In use, the supporting body 6 is arranged substantially parallel to the barrier B, i.e., it is arranged substantially horizontally.

[0059] As can be seen from Figure 3, the supporting body 6 has a cross section of substantially square or rectangular shape. In addition, the supporting body 6 is at least partly hollow. In actual facts, the supporting body 6 defines one or more cavities adapted to house useful elements for the operation of the visibility element 2 and / or for the connection thereof to the safety barrier A.

[0060] The supporting body 6 has at least one exposed surface 8 intended in use to face the roadway. In addition, the supporting body 6 has a rear surface 9 opposite the exposed surface 8. Again, the supporting body 6 has an upper surface 10 and a lower surface 11 opposite each other and positioned between the exposed surface 8 and the rear surface 9.

[0061] When the device 1 is associated with the safety barrier A, the exposed surface 8 and the rear surface 9 are arranged substantially vertically. Consequently, the lower surface 11 and the upper surface 10 are arranged substantially horizontally. Conveniently, the housing 4 is made on the supporting body 6. Specifically, the housing 4 is made at the exposed surface 8 so that the visibility element 2 faces the roadway. The housing 4 mainly extends along the longitudinal direction of the supporting body 6. Preferably, the housing 4 substantially extends along the entire length of the supporting body 6.

[0062] As anticipated above, the housing 4 has a shape which is substantially complementary to the visibility element 2 in order to make a coupling by interlocking with the latter. In actual facts, the housing 4 has a cavity 12 wherein at least one coupling portion 14 of the visibility element 2 can be housed. Such cavity 12 has dimensions which are complementary to the coupling portion 14.

[0063] As visible from Figure 3, the housing 4 defines at least one opening 13. Such an opening 13 communicates with the cavity 12. The opening 13 is adapted to allow at least one protruding portion 15 of the visibility element 2 to escape in order to allow the emission of the light radiation towards the roadway.

[0064] Conveniently, the supporting body 6 has an inner surface 16 bordering the housing 4.

[0065] Such an inner surface 16 has a substantially “C”-shaped profile which defines the cavity 12 and the opening 13 described above.

[0066] The inner surface 16 then has at least one pair of abutment portions 17 arranged at the opening 13. The abutment portions 17 are intended to abut against the coupling portion 14 of the visibility element 2 in order to secure and stop into the housing 4. These abutment portions 17 are opposite each other and bound at least part of the opening 13.

[0067] Appropriately, the opening 13 is cut out at the exposed surface 8.

[0068] The supporting body 6 then has at least one lateral inlet 18 formed where at least one of its ends 7 is located and communicating with the housing 4. The lateral inlet 18 is intended to allow the insertion by sliding of the visibility element 2 into the housing 4.

[0069] As anticipated above, the visibility element 2 is provided with at least one coupling portion 14 adapted to be housed in the housing 4. In particular, the coupling portion 14 is adapted to be arranged in the cavity of the housing 4. The visibility element 2 then comprises a protruding portion 15 adapted to protrude from the opening 13 when the coupling portion 14 is housed in the housing 4. Such a protruding portion 15 is configured to emit a light radiation which is visible to a driver.

[0070] As visible from Figure 3, the protruding portion 15 has a substantially “U” shape and projects from the housing portion 4. The housing portion 4 has at least one pair of stop surfaces 19 adapted to abut against the abutment portions 17 of the inner surface 16 of the supporting body 6.

[0071] Preferably, the stop surfaces 19 are arranged on the sides of the protruding portion 15.

[0072] Appropriately, the supporting body 6 comprises a projecting portion 20 arranged where the housing 4 is located. The projecting portion 20 protrudes from the housing 4 to cover at least partly the visibility element 2. In this case, the projecting portion 20 projects from the exposed surface 8. Specifically, the projecting portion 20 is arranged above the housing 4. Thus, the projecting portion 20 makes it possible to avoid transverse scattering of the emitted radiation, thus preventing the latter from directly reaching vehicle drivers, disturbing their view while driving.

[0073] The projecting portion 20 has a lower surface 20a facing the housing 4 and an upper surface 20b opposite the lower surface 20a. The lower surface 20a is arranged transversely to the supporting body 6. Specifically, the lower surface 20a is arranged transversely to the exposed surface 8 of the supporting body 6. On the other hand, the upper surface 20b is arranged inclined with respect to the lower surface. In actual facts, the projecting portion 20 has a substantially triangular shape.

[0074] As visible in Figure 3, the supporting body 6 has a hollow portion 21 adapted to house connector elements and / or electrical connection elements of the visibility element 2 to an electrical power source.

[0075] The hollow portion 21 is arranged on a portion of the supporting body 6 opposite the visibility element 2. In actual facts, the hollow portion 21 is arranged where the rear surface 9 is located.

[0076] Preferably, the hollow portion 21 extends parallel to the longitudinal direction of the supporting body 6. Even more preferably, the hollow portion 21 substantially extends along the entire length of the supporting body 6.

[0077] As visible from Figure 3, the fastening element 3 comprises fastening means 22 associated with the supporting body 6 and configured to fasten to at least one of the flaps Ls, Li of the barrier B. In this way, the lighting device 1 can be fastened to the lower flap Li or to the upper flap Ls of the barrier B. Preferably, the lighting device 1 is fastened to the lower flap Li.

[0078] The fastening means 22 are configured to fasten to a flap Ls, Li of the barrier B in a removable maimer. Thus, the lighting device 1 can be fastened to any type of safety barrier A, even those already installed on roads, in a quick and convenient manner.

[0079] Appropriately, the fastening means 22 comprise at least one clamp element 23 comprising a seat 24 adapted to receive the flap Ls, Li. Specifically, the seat 24 is a compartment into which the flap Ls, Li can be inserted.

[0080] The clamp element 23 is configured to tighten the flap Ls, Li within the seat 24 so as to be fastened to the barrier B. In actual facts, once the flap Ls, Li has been arranged within the seat 24, the clamp element 23 tightens to the flap Ls, Li, thus securing the fastening means 22 to the latter.

[0081] As can be seen from Figure 3, the clamp element 23 comprises at least one connecting plate element 25 which can be coupled to the supporting body 6. In addition, the clamp element 23 comprises at least one closing plate element 26 adapted to be positioned spaced apart from the connecting plate element 25 by interposition of tightening means 27 and defining the seat 24. In actual facts, the plate elements 25, 26 are adapted to be arranged spaced apart from each other to define the seat 24.

[0082] The tightening means 27 are configured to enable close tightening and anchoring of the plate elements 25, 26 to the flap Ls, Li. In actual facts, the tightening means 27 are positioned between the plate elements 25, 26 and are configured to adjust the distance between them. Specifically, the tightening means 27 are configured to move the plate elements 25, 26 close so as to tighten them to the flap Ls, Li. In addition, the tightening means 27 are also configured to move the plate elements 25, 26 away so as to release the flap Ls, Li and to remove the lighting device 1 from the safety barrier A.

[0083] The tightening means 27 comprise at least one pair of threaded holes drilled one on the connecting plate element 25 and the other on the closing plate element 26. In addition, the tightening means 27 have a screw element 28 configured to screw into the pair of threaded holes. The screw element 28 can thus be screwed to the holes so as to tighten the plate elements 25, 26 close. In addition, the screw element 28 can be unscrewed to move the plate elements 25, 26 away from each other in order to release the flap Ls, Li.

[0084] Appropriately, the fastening element 3 comprises connecting means 29 configured to connect the fastening means 22 and the supporting body 6 to each other. In actual facts, the connecting means 29 are configured to be positioned between the fastening means 22 and the supporting body 6 so as to connect them to each other. The connecting means 29 are preferably placed between the fastening means 22 and the rear surface 9 of the supporting body 6.

[0085] The connecting means 29 comprise at least one fixing element 30 located between the connecting plate element 25 and the supporting body 6. Specifically, the fixing element 30 is configured to fix the supporting body 6 to the connecting plate element 25.

[0086] As visible from Figure 3, the connecting means 29 comprise at least one hole cut out on the connecting plate element 25 and configured to receive the fixing element 30. In addition, the connecting means 29 have a connecting seat 31 cut out on the supporting body 6 and configured to receive the fixing element 30. The fixing element 30 is configured to be inserted into the hole and into the connecting seat 31 to tighten the connecting plate element 25 against the supporting body 6. Preferably, the connecting seat 31 is made where the rear surface 9 of the supporting body 6 is located.

[0087] Preferably, the connecting seat 31 is arranged above the hollow portion 21.

[0088] The connecting seat 31 is a groove which extends along the supporting body 6. In particular, the groove extends substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction so that the positioning of the supporting body 6 with respect to the barrier B can be adjusted. It thus also turns out to be possible to connect several fastening means 22 to the supporting body 6.

[0089] The connecting seat 31 has one opening which allows the entry of the fixing element 30 into the housing 4. The opening has smaller dimensions than the housing so as to define a stop surface internally to the connecting seat 31.

[0090] The fixing element 30 has a body 32 insertable into the connecting seat 31 and into the hole. In addition, the fixing element 30 has a head 33 adapted to abut against the connecting plate element 25. The fixing element 30 then comprises at least one bolt element 34 adapted to be arranged into the connecting seat 31. The bolt element 34 is configured to allow screwing the body of the fixing element 30.

[0091] The bolt element 34 has larger dimensions than the opening of the connecting seat 31 so as to abut against the stop surface.

[0092] The connecting seat 31 then has one inlet which allows the bolt element 34 to be inserted into the housing 4.

[0093] Preferably, the hole is threaded.

[0094] Preferably, the fixing element 30 is of the type of a screw which can be screwed to the hole and to the bolt element 34.

[0095] As visible from Figure 2, the lighting device 1 comprises at least one pair of fastening means 22 connected along the supporting body 6. Preferably, the fastening means 22 are arranged where the ends 7 of the supporting body 6 are located.

[0096] Consequently, the lighting device 1 comprises a pair of connecting means 29, each positioned between one of the connecting means 29 and the supporting body 6.

[0097] As visible from Figure 3, the connecting plate element 25 has at least a first portion 25a intended to be connected to the closing plate element 26 and a second portion 25b intended to be connected to the supporting body 6.

[0098] For this reason, the hole of the connecting means 29 is cut on the second portion 25b, while the hole of the fastening means 22 is cut on the first portion 25a. Preferably, the first portion 25a is bent with respect to the second portion 25b. Specifically, the first portion 25a and the second portion 25b are bent so as to form an acute angle between them.

[0099] The closing plate element 26, in turn, has a shape substantially similar to the first portion 25a of the connecting plate element 25.

[0100] Conveniently, the lighting device 1 comprises adjustment means 35 configured to adjust the inclination of the supporting body 6 with respect to the barrier B. Such adjustment means 35 allow the direction of the radiation emitted by the visibility element 2 to be changed so that it is as unobtrusive to the driver as possible.

[0101] Specifically, the adjustment means 35 vary the inclination of the supporting body 6 by rotating it around an axis substantially parallel to the longitudinal direction of the supporting body 6.

[0102] The adjustment means 35 are positioned between the connecting means 29 and the supporting body 6.

[0103] The adjustment means 35 comprise an abutment surface 36 positioned on the supporting body 6 and a thrust element 37 associated with the fastening means 22. The thrust element 37 is associated with the fastening means 22 in a movable maimer along a direction of thrust close to / away from the abutment surface 36 to abut against the latter and to move it in rotation.

[0104] Preferably, the thrust element 37 is associated with the connecting plate element 25 in a movable manner.

[0105] The thrust element 37 is coupled to the connecting plate element 25 by means of a helical torque. Preferably, the thrust element 37 is of the type of a threaded screw and the connecting plate element 25 has a threaded hole where the thrust element 37 is screwable. The abutment surface 36 is arranged at the rear surface of the supporting body 6.

[0106] Advantageously, the lighting device 1 is modular. In other words, the lighting device 1 comprises a plurality of visibility elements 2. Furthermore, the lighting device 1 comprises a plurality of fastening elements 3, each adapted to house one of the visibility elements 2.

[0107] The fastening elements 3 are configured to be arranged aligned with each other along a longitudinal direction. In actual facts, the fastening elements 3 are adapted to be arranged aligned along the longitudinal direction of the barrier B. Such modularity allows a plurality of fastening elements 3 of predefined length to be manufactured, which then can be associated with each other to light up the safety barriers A of different lengths.

[0108] Each of the visibility elements 2 extends between a pair of ends. At least one of the ends has at least one connector configured to electrically connect to the connector of another of the visibility elements 2. This expedient allows the plurality of visibility elements 2 to be connected in series with each other. Such a series of visibility elements 2 may be connected to a single electrical power source.

[0109] It has, in practice, been ascertained that the described invention achieves the intended objects, and in particular, the fact is emphasized that the lighting device makes it possible to improve the visibility of the safety barrier with which it is associated, while making it more secure. In addition, the lighting device thus made is easy to assemble and install. In fact, the device turns out to be applicable to already installed safety barriers by means of simple operations.
