Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to a cooling device comprising a knob which provides the adjustment of the compartment temperature.
[0002] Generally, cooling devices such as refrigerators comprise a plurality of different compartments such as fresh food compartment and freezer compartment, which usually have different internal temperatures. In the state of the art, the compartments wherein foodstuffs desired to be cooled to certain temperatures are placed have thermostats to keep the internal environment within the desired temperature range. The thermostats control the internal temperature by activating / deactivating a compressor and / or a fan when needed according to the ambient temperature. The thermostat adjustment is generally performed by rotating the thermostat knob provided at the inner volume of the relevant compartment. However, the thermostat knobs occupy space at the inner volume of the compartment, causing the compartment volume, that is desired to be wide as much as possible, to narrow. In addition, when adjusting the temperature for a compartment, like the freezer compartment, which is desired to be kept at a relatively low temperature, the temperature of the relevant compartment increases rapidly due to the heat transfer occurring between the compartment interior and the refrigerator exterior, which causes more energy to be consumed to lower the interior of the compartment to the target temperature. Moreover, while the user is placing foodstuffs into the compartment, foodstuff storage vessels such as containers, pots, etc. may hit the temperature adjustment knob, causing the knob to be damaged and / or an undesirable temperature to be adjusted for the relevant compartment.
[0003] In the state of the art Korean Patent Document No. KR20010059559, a refrigerator is disclosed, comprising a thermostat knob that is used by rotating.
[0004] In the state of the art German Patent Document No. DE102004048309, a rotary knob is disclosed, which can be shifted between an inactive pushed position and an active pulled position for rotating to provide increasing signals.
[0005] Therefore, in the state of the art, there is a need for a cooling device comprising a compartment temperature adjustment knob which is arranged in a single compartment and which enables the temperature adjustments of different compartments to be performed.
[0006] The aim of the present invention is the realization of a cooling device comprising a compartment temperature adjustment knob which is arranged in a single compartment and which enables the temperature adjustments of different compartments to be performed.
[0007] The cooling device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a first compartment wherein the foodstuffs to be cooled are stored; a second compartment wherein the foodstuffs are stored at a temperature different than that of the first compartment; at least one door which provides access to the first and second compartments; the cooling device further comprising a knob having a casing which is disposed into the first compartment or the second compartment, a first adjustment member which is connected to the casing so as to move forwards-backwards between an active position wherein the first adjustment member can rotate to adjust the temperature of the first compartment and a passive position to which the first adjustment member is brought by being pushed after the completion of the temperature adjustment process, and a second adjustment member which is connected to the casing so as to move forwards-backwards between an active position wherein the second adjustment member can rotate to adjust the temperature of the second compartment and a passive position to which the second adjustment member is brought by being pushed after the completion of the temperature adjustment process. The first adjustment member and the second adjustment member are preferably kept in the passive positions wherein the first and second adjustment members are almost flush with the casing when there is no need for temperature adjustment for any compartment. When the temperature adjustment is desired to be performed for the first compartment, the user preferably presses on the first adjustment member, in other words, applies a certain force, to shift the first adjustment member from the passive position to the active position and adjusts the temperature of the first compartment by rotating the first adjustment member brought to the active position. After the temperature adjustment process is completed, the user presses on the first adjustment member again and shifts the first adjustment member, which is in the active position, to the passive position. When the temperature adjustment is desired to be performed for the second compartment, the user preferably presses on the second adjustment member, in other words, applies a certain force, to shift the second adjustment member from the passive position to the active position and adjusts the temperature of the second compartment by rotating the second adjustment member brought to the active position. After the temperature adjustment process is completed, the user presses on the second adjustment member again and shifts the second adjustment member, which is in the active position, to the passive position. By means of the knob comprising the said push-in pop-out type adjustment members which are arranged in a single compartment, the interior volumes of the compartments can be used as efficiently as possible and the user is enabled to adjust the temperatures of all compartments very easily with a single knob.
[0008] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob comprises locking means which prevent the first and second adjustment members from rotating in the passive position. Thus, while the temperature is adjusted for the compartment related to one of the adjustment members, the other adjustment member, which is in the passive position, is prevented from accidentally rotating, eliminating the risk of accidentally adjusting the internal temperature of the relevant compartment.
[0009] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob comprises the casing which, at the end facing the compartment interior, has a first wall extending outwards to completely surround the same and an almost hollow cylindrical shape extending along an axis; a first adjustment member which, at the end facing the compartment interior, has a second wall extending outwards to completely surround the same and an almost hollow cylindrical shape connected to the casing so as to extend in the space in the casing along the relevant axis; and a second adjustment member which has a hollow cylindrical shape closed at one end so as to cover the end of the first adjustment member facing the relevant compartment and extend in the space in the casing along the relevant axis to prevent the inner space of the first adjustment member from being seen when viewed from the outside. By means of this simple compact structure of the said knob, the knob occupies a very small space in the compartment where the same is placed so as to enable the compartment's internal volume to be used efficiently, while the visual quality and therefore the perception of quality of the cooling device are increased.
[0010] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob comprises at least one movement mechanism which is provided in the casing and which is configured to ensure that the first and second adjustment members move almost linearly between the passive and active positions in a controlled manner when a certain amount of force is applied thereon. The said movement mechanism is preferably a push-in pop-out mechanism of any spring type commonly used in the state of the art push-in pop-out type knobs. This simple structure of the said movement mechanism enables the adjustment members to move backwards and forwards in a controlled and safe manner, while providing advantages in cost, assembly and labor.
[0011] In an embodiment of the present invention, the locking means comprise at least one table which is fixedly provided in the casing; at least one first extension which is provided on the first adjustment member so as to extend into the casing; at least one second extension which is provided on the second adjustment member so as to extend into the casing; at least one first housing which is provided on the table and which is configured to lock the first extension when the first adjustment member is in the passive position; and at least one second housing which is provided on the table and which is configured to lock the second extension when the second adjustment member is in the passive position. While the first adjustment member or the second adjustment member shifts from the passive position to the active position, the first extension or the second extension in the locked position in the first housing and the second housing are released from the relevant housing so as to enable the relevant adjustment member to rotate upon becoming active, thus allowing temperature adjustment for the relevant compartment. In an embodiment of the present invention, the table has a round shape and comprises a plurality of first housings arranged at certain intervals around the entire circumference thereof, and in this embodiment, the second housings are preferably positioned in the vicinity of the center of the table. In an embodiment of the present invention, the second housings are arranged on elevations extending outward from the table, and by means of this embodiment, the second extensions are enabled to be shorter, thus decreasing the overall weight of the knob while increasing the strength thereof. By means of the said simple locking means, the adjustment members in the passive position are prevented from accidentally rotating and from adjusting the temperature of the relevant compartment, while the simple structure also provides advantages in cost, assembly and labor.
[0012] In an embodiment of the present invention, markings representing the predetermined compartment temperature levels and / or predetermined fan operation levels are provided on the first adjustment member, the second adjustment member and / or the casing. The said markings can be provided, for example, on the first wall of the casing and / or on the second wall of the first adjustment member and / or on the cylindrical part of the first adjustment member extending outward from the casing in the active position and / or on the surface, facing the inside of the compartment, of the end of the second adjustment member covering the inner space of the first adjustment member and / or on the cylindrical part of the second adjustment member extending outward from the casing in the active position. By means of the said markings, the user is easily informed about the temperature level and / or the fan operation level of the compartments and is enabled to easily adjust the temperature of the compartments to the desired temperature level while adjusting the temperature.
[0013] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob comprises a first control unit which is provided in the casing and which is configured to detect the first compartment interior temperature level and / or fan operation level corresponding to the angular position of the first adjustment member and to generate a signal including the detected first compartment interior temperature level and / or fan operation level. The first control unit can directly transmit the generated signal to the compressor and / or the fan so as to ensure that the compressor and / or the fan operate in accordance with the said signal, or can transmit the said signal to a main control unit of the cooling device so as to ensure that the said main control unit operates the compressor and / or the fan in accordance with the received signal such that the first compartment has the temperature adjusted by the user.
[0014] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob comprises a second control unit which is provided in the casing and which is configured to detect the second compartment interior temperature level and / or fan operation level corresponding to the angular position of the second adjustment member and to generate a signal including the detected second compartment interior temperature level and / or fan operation level. The second control unit can directly transmit the generated signal to the compressor and / or the fan so as to ensure that the compressor and / or the fan operate in accordance with the said signal, or can transmit the said signal to a main control unit of the cooling device so as to ensure that the said main control unit operates the compressor and / or the fan in accordance with the received signal such that the second compartment has the temperature adjusted by the user.
[0015] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob is placed in the compartment, between the first compartment and the second compartment, wherein the foodstuffs are kept at a relatively higher temperature. Thus, when the door is opened for any compartment to access the knob, a slower heat transfer is ensured between the compartment closer to the outside temperature and the outside environment, and depending on the said heat transfer, less energy is consumed to bring the compartment with increased internal temperature to the initial temperature or to the desired new temperature. This also provides the advantage of increasing the energy efficiency of the cooling device.
[0016] By means of the present invention, a cooling device is realized, which enables the user to adjust the internal temperature of each compartment by means of a knob provided in only one compartment among a plurality of compartments.
[0017] The cooling device realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures, where: Figure 1 - is the perspective view of an embodiment of the cooling device of the present invention. [0019] The cooling device (1) comprises a first compartment (2) wherein the foodstuffs to be cooled are stored; a second compartment (3) which is kept at a temperature different than that of the first compartment (2); at least one door (4) which provides access into the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3); and at least knob (5) which enables the adjustment of the temperature of the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3). The cooling device (1) comprises the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3) that are kept at different temperatures, such as a fresh food compartment which enables the foodstuffs to be stored only cold and a freezer compartment which enables the foodstuffs to be stored frozen for a long time. The knob (5) is provided on a wall facing the interior of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3) so as to enable the user to adjust the interior temperatures of the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3).
[0020] The cooling device (1) of the present invention comprises the knob (5) having a casing (6) which is provided in the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3), a push-in pop-out type first adjustment member (7) which is provided as connected to the casing (6) so as to can move by rotating between an active position wherein the temperature of the first compartment (2) can be adjusted and a passive position to which the first adjustment member (7) is brought to by being pushed when the temperature is adjusted to the desired value, and a push-in pop-out type second adjustment member (8) which is provided as connected to the casing (6) so as to move by rotating between an active position wherein the temperature of the second compartment (3) can be adjusted and a passive position to which the second adjustment member (8) is brought to by being pushed when the temperature is adjusted to the desired value. The casing (6) is provided on a wall of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3) facing the interior and is preferably placed in a hole formed on the relevant wall. When the user wants to change the temperature of the first compartment (2), he / she brings the first adjustment member (7) to the active position by pressing on the first adjustment member (7) which is in the passive position, in other words, by applying a certain force thereon. The user then rotates the first adjustment member (7) to the position so as to enable the first compartment (2) to be brought to the desired temperature. After the first adjustment member (7) is brought to the relevant position, the user brings the first adjustment member (7) back to the passive position by pressing on the first adjustment member (7), in other words, by applying a certain amount of force thereon. When the user wants to change the temperature of the second compartment (3), he / she brings the second adjustment member (8) to the active position by pressing on the second adjustment member (8) which is in the passive position, in other words, by applying a certain force thereon. The user then rotates the second adjustment member (8) to the position so as to enable the second compartment (3) to be brought to the desired temperature. After the second adjustment member (8) is brought to the relevant position, the user brings the second adjustment member (8) back to the passive position by pressing on the second adjustment member (8), in other words, by applying a certain amount of force thereon. In the cooling device (1) of the present invention, by providing the knob (5) in only one of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3) without providing a knob (5) in both the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3), the internal volume of the first compartment (2) and / or the second compartment (3) is enabled to be used more efficiently. Moreover, by providing the knob (5) in only one of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3), advantages in assembly and labor are provided during the production process.
[0021] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) comprises locking means which are configured to lock the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8), which are in the passive position, so as to prevent the same from rotating. By means of the locking means, when there is no need to adjust the temperature of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3), the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8), which are in the passive position, are prevented from accidentally rotating in undesirable situations such as the user's hand hitting the same, thus eliminating the risk of undesirable temperature adjustment in the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3).
[0022] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) comprises a casing (6) which has a first wall arranged at one end thereof so as to extend outwards to completely surround the same and which has an almost hollow cylindrical shape extending linearly along an axis; a first adjustment member (7) which has a second wall arranged at one end thereof so as to extend outwards to completely surround the same and which has an almost hollow cylindrical shape extending linearly in the space in the casing (6) along the said axis; and a second adjustment member (8) which has a surface at one end preventing the inner space of the first adjustment member (7) from being seen when viewed from the outside and which has an almost hollow cylindrical shape extending linearly in the space in the casing (6) along the said axis. In other words, when the knob (5) arranged in the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3) is viewed from the outside when the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8) are in the passive position, the second adjustment member (8) appears as a circle in the center, the first adjustment member (7) appears as a ring surrounding the second adjustment member (8) and the casing (6) appears as a ring surrounding the first adjustment member (7). In this embodiment, the knob (5) has a compact structure and occupies little space so as to enable the internal volume of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3) wherein the knob (5) is provided to be used efficiently.
[0023] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) comprises a movement mechanism which is provided in the space in the casing (6) and which is configured to move the first adjustment member (7) or the second adjustment member (8) from the passive position to the active position when a certain force is applied to the first adjustment member (7) or the second adjustment member (8), which is in the passive position, and to move the first adjustment member (7) or the second adjustment member (8) from the active position to the passive position when a certain force is applied to the first adjustment member (7) or the second adjustment member (8), which is in the active position. In an embodiment of the present invention, the movement mechanism comprises at least one shaft and a spring surrounding the shaft. The said movement mechanism has a simple structure and by means of such a movement mechanism, the movement of the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8) between the active and passive positions is performed in a reliable and controlled manner.
[0024] In an embodiment of the present invention, the locking means comprise at least one table (9) which is provided so as not to move in the space in the casing (6); at least one first extension (10) which is provided on the first adjustment member (7) so as to extend towards the space in the casing (6); at least one second extension (11) which is provided on the second adjustment member (8) so as to extend towards the space in the casing (6); at least one first housing (12) which is provided on the table (9) so as to be aligned with the first extension (10); and at least one second housing (13) which is provided on the table (9) so as to be aligned with the second extension (11). In this embodiment, when no temperature adjustment is required for the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3), the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8) are in the passive position where the first extension (10) is held in the first housing (12) and the second extension (11) is held in the second housing (13). Thus, by means of the first housing (12) and the second housing (13) provided on the stationary table (9), the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8) are prevented from rotating. When the temperature adjustment is desired to be performed for the first compartment (2), the first extension (10) leaves the first housing (12) depending on the linear movement performed by the first adjustment member (7) and the second extension (11) is still held in the second housing (13). In this case, since the connection between the stationary table (9) and the first adjustment member (7) is eliminated, the user can make the desired temperature adjustment by rotating the first adjustment member (7). Moreover, since in this case the stationary table (9) and the second adjustment member (8) are still connected, the second adjustment member (8) cannot rotate. Thus, even if the user accidentally touches the second adjustment member (8) while performing the temperature adjustment of the first compartment (2), the second adjustment member (8) cannot rotate and disrupt the temperature adjustment of the second compartment (3). When the temperature adjustment is desired to be performed for the second compartment (3), the second extension (11) leaves the second housing (13) depending on the linear movement performed by the second adjustment member (8) and the first extension (10) is still held in the first housing (12). In this case, since the connection between the stationary table (9) and the second adjustment member (8) is eliminated, the user can make the desired temperature adjustment by rotating the second adjustment member (8). Moreover, since in this case the stationary table (9) and the first adjustment member (7) are still connected, the first adjustment member (7) cannot rotate. Thus, even if the user accidentally touches the first adjustment member (7) while performing the temperature adjustment of the second compartment (3), the first adjustment member (7) cannot rotate and alter the temperature adjustment of the first compartment (2). By means of this type of simple locking means, advantages in cost, assembly and labor are provided while the user is prevented from accidentally altering the current temperature adjustment of the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3).
[0025] In an embodiment of the present invention, on the first adjustment member (7), the second adjustment member (8) and / or the casing (6), the knob (5) comprises a plurality of markings (14) which enable the user to be informed about the temperature level and / or the fan operation level of the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3) depending on the position of the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8). In an embodiment of the present invention, the said markings (14) are positioned on the first wall of the casing (6). In an embodiment of the present invention, the said markings (14) are positioned on the second wall of the first adjustment member (7) and / or the relevant cylindrical wall which protrudes from the casing (6) when the first adjustment member (7) moves from the passive position to the active position. In an embodiment of the present invention, the said markings (14) are positioned on the second adjustment member (8) surface which is visible from the outside and / or the relevant cylindrical wall which protrudes from the casing (6) when the second adjustment member (8) moves from the passive position to the active position. By means of the said markings (14), the user is easily informed about the temperature level and / or the fan operation level of the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3) and is enabled to easily adjust the temperature of the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3) to the desired temperature level while adjusting the temperature. Moreover, in the embodiments where the markings (14) are positioned on the relevant cylindrical wall of the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8), the said markings (14) are prevented from being seen from outside as the first adjustment member (7) and the second adjustment member (8) are in the passive position, thus improving the visual quality.
[0026] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) comprises at least one first control unit (15) which is provided in the space in the casing (6), which is connected to the first adjustment member (7) so as to determine the angular position of the first adjustment member (7) and which is configured to generate a signal containing information on the temperature level and / or the fan operation level corresponding to the determined angular position of the first adjustment member (7). The first control unit (15) is preferably a circuit board. The first control unit (15) generates a signal containing information on the temperature level and / or the fan operation level corresponding to the angular position of the first adjustment member (7) after the user rotates the first adjustment member (7) and makes the necessary temperature adjustment for the first compartment (2). The compressor and / or the fan of the cooling device (1) are operated based on the said signal, and the first compartment (2) is enabled to be brought to the temperature desired by the user.
[0027] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) comprises at least one second control unit (16) which is provided in the space in the casing (6), which is connected to the second adjustment member (8) so as to determine the angular position of the second adjustment member (8) and which is configured to generate a signal containing information on the temperature level and / or the fan operation level corresponding to the determined angular position of the second adjustment member (8). The second control unit (16) is preferably a circuit board. The second control unit (16) generates a signal containing information on the temperature level and / or the fan operation level corresponding to the angular position of the second adjustment member (8) after the user rotates the second adjustment member (8) and makes the necessary temperature adjustment for the second compartment (3). The compressor and / or the fan of the cooling device (1) are operated based on the said signal, and the second compartment (3) is enabled to be brought to the temperature desired by the user.
[0028] In an embodiment of the present invention, the knob (5) is provided in the first compartment (2) or the second compartment (3), which is kept at a higher temperature, between the first compartment (2) and the second compartment (3). For example, in a refrigerator (1) comprising a freezer compartment and a fresh food compartment with an internal temperature higher than the freezer compartment temperature, the knob (5) is provided in the fresh food compartment. Thus, when the temperature adjustment is desired to be performed, a slower heat transfer occurs between the outer environment and the compartment with a lower temperature difference with the outside environment as a result of opening the door (4), ensuring that the internal temperature of the relevant compartment increases less. Therefore, less energy is consumed to bring the internal temperature of the compartment, the internal temperature of which increases less during the temperature adjustment, to the desired value, preventing energy consumption.
[0029] By means of the present invention, a cooling device (1) is realized, which enables the user to adjust the internal temperature of each compartment (2, 3) by means of a knob (5) provided in only one compartment (2 or 3) among a plurality of compartments (2, 3).
