[0082] FIG. 1 shows a schematic diagram of a network (architecture) according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 1, the network comprises the following network functions / entities:
[0083] 1) UE: User Equipment
[0084] 2) RAN: Radio Access Network
[0085] In the present disclosure, the RAN may be equal to RAN node or next-generation RAN (NG-RAN) , or NG-RAN node.
[0086] 3) AMF: Access and Mobility Management Function
[0087] The AMF includes the following functionalities: Registration Management, Connection Management, Reachability Management and Mobility Management. The AMF also performs access authentication and access authorization. The AMF is a NAS (non-access stratum) security termination and relays the SM NAS between the UE and the SMF, etc. The AMF may further perform an SMF selection function during a PDU Session Establishment procedure and / or a UE Mobility procedure.
[0088] 4) SMF: Session Management Function
[0089] The SMF includes the following functionalities: session establishment, modification and release, UE IP (internet protocol) address allocation &management (including optional authorization functions) , selection and control of UP (user plane) function, downlink data notification, etc. The service area of the SMF is a collection of UPF Service Areas of all UPFs which can be controlled by the SMF.
[0090] 5) UPF: User Plane Function
[0091] The UPF includes the following functionalities: serving as an anchor point for intra- / inter-radio access technology (RAT) mobility, packet routing &forwarding, traffic usage reporting, QoS (quality of service) handling for the user plane, downlink packet buffering and downlink data notification triggering, etc. The service area of the UPF is an area consisting of one or more tracking area (s) within which PDU Session associated with the UPF can be served by the RAN nodes via an N3 interface between the RAN node and the UPF without the need to add a new UPF in between or to remove / re-allocate the UPF. The A-UPF refers to anchor UPF which is kept unchanged for the UE during the UE mobility. The I-UPF (inserted UPF) is inserted / relocated when the UE moves outside of the A-UPF service area. The I-UPF uses N3 tunnel to connect with the RAN node and uses N9 tunnel to connect with the A-UPF. The I-UPF may also provide traffic offloading function to route the identified uplink traffic to local Data Network.
[0092] 6) PCF: Policy Control Function
[0093] The PCF provides policy rules to control plane functions to enforce the rules. Specifically, the PCF provides Access and mobility related policies to the AMF and the AMF enforces them during a mobility procedure, provides UE access selection and PDU Session selection related policies (e.g., UE policies) to the AMF and the AMF forward them to the UE, provides Session management related policies to the SMF and the SMF enforce them. The PCF can be deployed in a distributed manner and each PCF may support different functions in the same PLMN (public land mobile network) .
[0094] 7) UDR: Unified Data Repository
[0095] The UDR can support the storage and retrieval of subscription data by the UDM (Unified Data Management) , storage and retrieval of structured data for exposure, application data (including Packet Flow Descriptions (PFDs) for application detection, AF request information for multiple UEs, etc. ) , storage and retrieval of NF Group ID corresponding to subscriber identifier (e.g. IMPI, IMPU) . The UDR is located in the same PLMN as the NF service consumers storing in and retrieving data from the UDR using a Nudr interface.
[0096] 8) NEF: Network Exposure Function
[0097] The NEF stores / retrieves information as structured data using a standardized interface (e.g., Nudr) to the UDR. The NEF provides a means for the Application Functions to securely provide information to the 3GPP network, e.g., the Application influence on traffic routing information. In that case, the NEF may authenticate and authorize and assist in throttling the Application Functions. A specific NEF instance may support one or more of the functionalities and consequently an individual NEF may support a subset of the APIs specified for capability exposure. The NEF can access the UDR located in the same PLMN as the NEF.
[0098] 9) AF: Application Function
[0099] The AF interacts with the 3GPP Core Network in order to provide services, for example to support application influence on traffic routing. Based on operator deployment, the AFs considered to be trusted by the operator can be allowed to interact directly with relevant Network Functions. The AFs not allowed by the operator to access directly the Network Functions may use an external exposure framework via the NEF to interact with relevant Network Functions.
[0100] 10) EAS: Edge Application Server
[0101] In an embodiment, there could be more than one instance for each EAS deployed in the network. These different instances could be deployed on Edge Hosting Environments (EHEs) with different computing powers, e.g., with supporting of common CPU, with supporting of GPU / DPU, FPGA and / or with supporting of Supercomputing. For example, in FIG. 2, EAS 1-1, EAS 1-2 and EAS 1-3 are three instances instantiated for the same EAS on different EHEs. These instances could provide different service experience.
[0102] In an embodiment, the N6 interfaces (i.e., the interfaces between the UPF and the local DN) delay could also be different. The N6 delay (i.e., delay of the N6 interface) could also impact the service experience. For example, in FIG. 2, the N6 delay between the UPF and the EAS 1-1 / 1-2 (or the DN comprising the EAS 1-1 / 1-2) is 10ms (microseconds) and the N6 delay between the UPF and the EAS 1-3 (or the DN comprising the EAS 1-3) is 5ms.
[0103] In an embodiment, an availability of the EHE may change during the lifecycle of the EAS instances.
[0104] In an embodiment, because the computing power, the N6 delay and the availability of the EHE may impact the 3GPP Core Network traffic routing, at least part of these factors may need to be considered for the traffic routing.
[0105] In an embodiment, the AF may send requests to influence the SMF on its routing decisions for traffic of PDU Sessions. The AF requests may have influence on UPF (re) selection and (I-) SMF (re) selection and allow the user traffic to be routed to a local access to a Data Network (identified by a DNAI (data network access identifier) ) .
[0106] For the purpose of providing optimized user service experience, certain factors may need to be considered in the mechanism of UPF (re) selection and EAS deployed in DN (re) selection.
[0107] In an embodiment, DNAI selection information may be used by the SMF during selecting / reselecting traffic routing. The DNAI selection information may include at least one of:
[0108] - Computing power factor: Information associated with the computing power for the EAS instance (s) (e.g., the computing power on the EHE) .
[0109] - N6 interface delay: The data plan delay between the UPF and the local DN.
[0110] - Selection weight factor: Selection weight for each DNAI when there are more than one DNAIs (e.g., availability of the EAS instance) .
[0111] In an embodiment, the AF provides EAS deployment information including the DNAI selection information to the NEF.
[0112] In an embodiment, the NEF notifies the SMF the EAS deployment information including the DNAI selection information.
[0113] In an embodiment, the AF sends requests including the DNAI selection information (e.g., computing power requirement) to the SMF, to influence SMF routing decision for the traffic of PDU Session.
[0114] In an embodiment, the SMF selects the UPF and / or the EAS based on the AF requests (including the DNAI selection information (e.g., computing power requirement) ) and / or EAS deployment information (including DNAI selection information) .
[0115] FIG. 3 shows a schematic diagram of a procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 3, the AF provides non-PDU Session specific EAS Deployment information to the 5GC. Specifically, the procedure shown in FIG. 3 comprises the following steps:
[0116] Step 301: The AF invokes an Nnef_EASDeployment_Create / Update / Delete service operation. This request may comprise at least one of the following non-PDU Session specific EAS Deployment information:
[0117] - AF ID: Addressing information of Application Function responsible for the DNAI in the record.
[0118] - DNN: Data network name for the EAS Deployment Information.
[0119] - S-NSSAI Single Network Slice Selection Assistance Information for the EAS Deployment Information.
[0120] - External Group Identifier / Internal Group Identifier: Group ID for the EAS Deployment information.
[0121] - Application ID: ID used for identifying the application to which the EAS Deployment Information corresponds.
[0122] - FQDN (s) : Supported Fully Qualified Domain Name (s) for application (s) deployed in the Local part of the DN.
[0123] - DNAI (s) : DNAI (s) for the EAS Deployment information.
[0124] - DNS Server Information: List of DNS server identifiers (consisting of IP address and port) for each DNAI.
[0125] - EAS IP address range Information: IP address (es) of the EASs in the Local part of the DN or the IP address ranges (IPv4 subnetwork (s) and / or IPv6 prefix (es) of the Local part of the DN where the EAS is deployed for each DNAI.
[0126] - N6 traffic routing information: Information about how to forward edge traffic in the local part of DN corresponding to the DNAI.
[0127] - DNAI selection information: Information used by the SMF to select the DNAI during selecting / reselecting traffic routing. In an embodiment, the DNAI selection information includes at least one of:
[0128] 1) Computing power factor: Information about the computing power for the EAS instance, e.g., the computing power on the Edge Hosting Environment (EHE) , availability of the EAS instance.
[0129] 2) N6 interface delay: The data plan delay between a UPF and a local DN.
[0130] 3) Selection weight factor: The selection weight for each DNAI when there are more than one DNAIs.
[0131] Step 302: The NEF checks whether the AF is authorized to perform the request and authorized to provision the EAS Deployment Information based on the operator policies. The NEF derives the DNN and the S-NSSAI from the AF Service Identifier if the DNN and the S-NSSAI are not received explicitly and translates the received External Application Identifier to Application Identifier known inside MNO (mobile network operator) domain.
[0132] Step 303: The NEF invokes the Nudr_DM_Create / Update / Delete to the UDR if it is authorized.
[0133] Step 304: The UDR stores / updates / removes the corresponding information including the DNAI selection information and responds a Nudr_DM_Create / Update / Delete Response to the NEF.
[0134] Step 305: The NEF sends Nnef_EASDeployment_Create / Update / Delete Response to the AF.
[0135] FIG. 4 shows a schematic diagram of a procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 4, the NEF notifies the SMF about the EAS deployment information including, e.g., DNAI selection information. The procedure in FIG. 4 comprises the following steps:
[0136] Steps 401 and 402: As pre-requisite condition, the SMF subscribes to EAS Deployment Information Change Notification from the NEF by sending Nnef_EASDeployment_Subscribe message. The SMF may indicate that the current status of EAS Deployment Information shall be notified immediately (if available) . The SMF may indicate for which (list of) DNN and / or S-NSSAI and / or application identifier and / or Internal Group Identifier (if available) it subscribes. In an embodiment, the SMF may indicate for which (kind of) DNAI selection information it subscribes.
[0137] Steps 403 and 404: The NEF invokes Nnef_EASDeployment_Notify (EAS Deployment Information) to the SMF (s) to which the EAS Deployment Information shall be provided. If there is the EAS Deployment Information available and an immediate report is required, the NEF notifies the SMF (s) with such information including the DNAI selection information. In an embodiment, the DNAI selection information may be that subscribed by the SMF if the SMF indicates for which (kind of) DNAI selection information it subscribes.
[0138] FIG. 5 shows a schematic diagram of a procedure according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 5, the AF sends requests including the DNAI selection information (e.g., computing power requirement) to influence SMF routing decisions for traffic of PDU Session. Particularly, the procedure in FIG. 5 comprises the following steps:
[0139] Step 500a: The PCF (s) subscribes to modifications of AF requests (Data Set =Application Data; Data Subset = AF traffic influence request information, Data Key = S-NSSAI and / or DNN and / or Internal Group Identifier or SUPI) from the UDR.
[0140] Step 500b-1: The SMF subscribes to notification of AF request by invoking Nnef_TrafficInfluenceData_Subscribe service (Data Set = Application Data; Data Subset = AF traffic influence request information; Data Key = S-NSSAI and / or DNN and / or Internal Group Identifier and / or UE IP or SUPI) from the NEF. In an embodiment, the AF traffic influence request information includes the DNAI selection requirement.
[0141] Step 500b-2: In an embodiment, the NEF subscribes to notification of AF requests from the UDR.
[0142] Step 501: To create a new request, the AF invokes a Nnef_TrafficInfluence_Create service operation. The request also contains an AF Transaction ID.
[0143] To update or remove an existing request, the AF invokes a Nnef_TrafficInfluence_Update or Nnef_TrafficInfluence_Delete service operation providing the corresponding AF Transaction ID.
[0144] In an embodiment, the request may contain at least one of:
[0145] - The address (IP or Ethernet) of the UE, DNN (Data Network Name) , S-NSSAI (Single-Network Slice Selection Assistance Information) : The information is used to identify the PDU Sessions which are subject for offloading. The AF Request may target for already established PDU session, in this case, the address of the UE is included. The AF Request may also target for future PDU Session, in this case only the DNN and S-NSSAI are included.
[0146] - GPSI (Generic Public Subscription Identifier) , External Group Identifier: The information is used to identify the particular UE, or a group of UE. The NEF may convert the External Group Identifier into Internal Group Identifier. If none of them are provided, the AF request is targeting for any UE.
[0147] - Application identifier or traffic filtering information, AF-Service-Identifier: The information is used to identify the application and the associated traffic to be offloaded.
[0148] - a list of DNAI (s) (DN Access Identifier (s) ) and corresponding routing profile ID (s) or N6 traffic routing information and other related parameters. The information is used to identify the user plane access to one or more Date Networks where applications are deployed. The SMF uses the DNAI to selects the I-UPF for offloading traffic.
[0149] - DNAI selection requirement: The information is used to represent / indicate requirement (s) on the DNAI, e.g., an indication associated with target / selected computing power, and / or an indication of target / selected EAS instance and / or an indication of EAS instance which uses the selected computing power (e.g., to provide required service experience) and / or the specific computing power requirement (s) from the user side.
[0150] Step 502: The AF sends its request to the NEF. If the request is sent directly from the AF to the PCF, the AF reaches the PCF selected for the existing PDU Session by configuration or by invoking the Nbsf_management_Discovery service.
[0151] The NEF ensures the necessary authorization control, including throttling of AF requests and mapping from the information provided by the AF into information needed by the 5GC.
[0152] Step 503: In the case of Nnef_TrafficInfluence_Create or Update, the NEF stores the AF request information in the UDR (Data Set = Application Data; Data Subset, Data Key = AF Transaction Internal ID, S-NSSAI and DNN and / or Internal Group Identifier (s) and / or Subscriber Category (s) or SUPI, DNAI selection requirement) .
[0153] In the case of Nnef_TrafficInfluence_delete, the NEF deletes the AF requirements in the UDR (Data Set = Application Data; Data Subset, Data Key = AF Transaction Internal ID) .
[0154] Step 504a: The PCF (s) that has / have subscribed to modifications of the AF requests receive (s) a Nudr_DM_Notify notification of the data change from the UDR.
[0155] Step 504b: The UDR notifies the subscribed NEF of the AF traffic influence request information. In an embodiment, the AF traffic influence request information includes the DNAI selection requirement.
[0156] Step 505a: The PCF determines that the existing PDU Sessions are potentially impacted by the AF request. For each of these PDU Sessions, the PCF updates the SMF with corresponding new policy information about the PDU Session by invoking Npcf_SMPolicyControl_UpdateNotify service operation.
[0157] In the case of AF influence on traffic routing, the PCF may, optionally, use service experience analytics per UP path, to provide an updated list of DNAI (s) to the SMF and DNAI selection requirement.
[0158] Step 505b: The NEF notifies the subscribed SMF of the AF traffic influence request information. In an embodiment, the AF traffic influence request information includes the DNAI selection requirement.
[0159] Step 506: When / after receiving the updated policy information about the PDU Session from the PCF, the SMF may take appropriate actions to reconfigure the User plane of the PDU Session.
[0160] In the case of AF influence on traffic routing, the SMF may consider service experience analytics and / or DN Performance analytics per UP path (i.e., including UPF and / or DNAI and / or AS instance and / or DNAI selection information) and / or DNAI selection requirement before taking such actions. In an embodiment, the actions may comprise at least one of:
[0161] - Selecting a UPF with the capability to connect to the EAS instance meeting the DNAI selection requirement (e.g., computing power requirement) ;
[0162] - Selecting a UPF considering the E2E delay including N6 interface delay;
[0163] - Selecting a UPF with the capability to connect to EAS instance taking into account the selection weight factor;
