Description

TECHNICAL FIELD

[0001] The present invention relates to an attachment system for parts of a tent, in particular a tent configured for attachment to a vehicle. The present invention also relates to a tent, use of an elastic part and to a method of attaching parts of a tent.PRIOR ART

[0002] A tent can generally be adjusted between an erected configuration and a transport configuration. Moreover, it is known to provide tents that can be attached to vehicles, for example to a trailer hitch or a rooftop of the vehicle. Such tents usually require the attachment of parts of the tent to each other. At least in the erected configuration, it is desired that a lot of those parts are attached in a watertight manner. In the transport configuration, it is desired that no water or dirt can ingress into the interior of the tent or even its cover. For example, a soft cover or hard cover is provided that protects the tent during transport. Moreover, it is often required that a rigid part, such as a floorboard, is attached to a flexible part, such as a canopy. Such a connection is challenging to manufacture and assemble with sufficiently small tolerances and sufficient resilience in a cost-effective manner.SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0003] A first aspect relates to an attachment system for parts of a tent. The tent may be configured for attachment to a vehicle. The tent may be a vehicle tent. The vehicle tent may be configured as a rooftop tent and / or tent configured for attachment to a trailer hitch. The tent may be adjustable between an erected configuration and a transport configuration. In the erected configuration, the tent may provide an interior space for one or more users. In the transport configuration, the tent may not provide sufficient interior space to be used for living by one or more users. The tent may still provide sufficient interior space for storage of certain elements, such as a mattress. One part that is to be attached may be a rigid part. Another part that is to be attached may be an intermediate part for attaching further parts of the tent, such as a canopy, such a further part or may be a sealing element, such as for protecting the tent in its transport configuration. The tent may comprise a canopy and / or a tent floor. Optionally, the tent may comprise a hard top that acts as a roof in the erected configuration and as a lid in the transport configuration. The tent floor may be a rigid floor, for example formed by one or more wooden, plastic, metal or composite material. For example, the tent floor may comprise an aluminium honeycomb floorboard. The canopy may comprise an entrance door, windows and / or form ventilation openings in the erected configuration.

[0004] The system comprises a rigid part of the tent, such as a tent floor or tent roof, and an attachment element. The rigid part may be a hard sheet, such as a metal or plastic sheet. The rigid part may be a frame part or comprise a frame part, such as a frame of the floor of the tent. The rigid part may comprise or consist of a profile, in particular an aluminum profile and / or a profile manufactured with a continuous casting process. The rigid part may be configured as a unitarian one-piece element. The rigid part may also be formed from two or more separate elements. The profile may form an outer edge of the rigid part in the tent, such as an outer edge of the floor or roof. The rigid part has a receiving recess, such as a groove, with a main opening. The recess may be limited by only one element of the rigid part or by multiple elements forming the rigid part. The main opening may be at a topside of the recess. The topside main opening may face away from the rest of the rigid part. The main opening may face sideways or downward relative to gravity when the tent is mounted to the vehicle and / or is erected. Topside may be understood relative to the extension of the groove in the rigid part. The main opening may be an opening that extends along the whole recess or at least a majority of the recess. The main opening may extend parallel to a longitudinal extension of the recess, in particular the groove. The recess may have an elongated shape, such as a track-like shape. The main opening may form a major side of the track. The recess may have a rectangular, round, triangular or irregular shaped cross-section. The main opening may have a regular shape, such as an elongated rectangular shape. The recess may be free of further openings besides the main opening. The recess may have further openings, such as at the ends of its longitudinal extension. These further openings may be side openings. These further openings may not interact with the attachment element, in the mounted state and / or during attachment and / or detachment. These further openings may only be present due to manufacturing reasons, such as when the rigid part is formed in an extrusion process. The main opening may be larger than any further opening of the recess. The main opening may face outwardly away from the rigid part and / or the tent, for example in its erected and / or transport configuration. These further openings may be closed, for example by plugs and / or other rigid parts and in particular before mounting the attachment element. For example, only the main opening is used for attaching and optionally detaching the attachment element. A section of the attachment element may extend through the main opening in an attached state. The cross section of the recess may have a larger diameter than the main opening. Walls of the rigid part may form an undercut with the recess. The main opening may be limited by two walls extending away from the topside opening. The recess may have a bottom wall arranged opposite the main opening.

[0005] The attachment element may be configured as an elastic part, such as a thermoplastic elastomer part. Thermoplastic elastomers may be a class of copolymers or a physical mix of polymers that have both thermoplastic and elastomeric properties. Thermoplastic elastomers may also be referred to as thermoplastic rubbers. However, the attachment element may also be formed from another material, such as natural rubber, or even a rigid material, such as thermosetting polymer. The attachment element may, for example, be manufactured in a continuous casting or injection molding process. The attachment element may be a continuous cast part or an injection molded part. The attachment element is attached to the rigid part with an insertion section of the attachment element arranged in the recess. The insertion section may hold the attachment element attached to the rigid part. The attachment element may have a body section extending from the insertion section. The body section may be connected to the insertion section. The attachment element may be a unitarian one-piece element. The insertion section or the overall attachment element may have a unitarian single piece configuration and / or may consist out of one material. The insertion section or the whole attachment element may be formed in an extrusion process. The insertion section or the whole attachment element may be an extruded part. The insertion section may have an asymmetrical cross-section, in particular with regard to an insertion direction through the main opening. The insertion section or the overall attachment element may be free of a reinforcing part, such as a steel cable or other metal insert. The body section may extend away from the insertion section and / or may be arranged outside of the recess. When inserting the insertion section through the main opening, no further adjustment, such as a sliding of the attachment element through the longitudinal extension of the recess, may be required. The attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part may be permanent or detachable. The attachment element may be only attached to the rigid part by means of the insertion section in the recess or by additional means as well, such as, for example, screws and / or glue in the recess. The insertion section or the whole attachment element may comprise or consist out of thermoplastic elastomers. For example, the attachment element may be formed from a thermoplastic elastomer material.

[0006] The configuration as an elastic part allows several improvements as compared to other means of attachment. Attachment and optionally detachment may be fast and easy. For example, the insertion section may be deformed for insertion through the main opening and then elastically return to its former shape. The insertion section may thus anchor the attachment element to the rigid part. No further mounting, adjusting and the like may be necessary for assembly. The attachment element may be easily replaced in case of wear and / or tear. A tolerance chain may be small. For example, attachment of a flexible part, such as a canopy of the tent, to the rigid part, may usually involve several further parts, zippers and the like. Those parts each have a manufacturing and mounting tolerance that may end up in an ill-defined shape of the tent, if necessary. The elastic part may allow the use of the less such intermediate elements. The elasticity of the attachment element may cause self-centering. Moreover, the elasticity of the attachment element may provide a sealing effect, so that no separate seals may be necessary. The attachment element does not need inserted elements, such as metal parts, to provide a reliable attachment. Manufacturing may thus be fast and cost-effective.

[0007] Alternatively to being configured as an elastic part, the attachment element may be only configured as a flexible part. A form of a flexible part may be deformable, in particular reversibly deformable. For example, a flexible part may be easily bended. However, compared to an elastic part, a material of flexible part may not be stretched, or at least not substantially stretched. An example for a flexible part is a thin metallic wire attachment element or an attachment element made from a thermoplastic material. An attachment element that is flexible but not elastic may be durable and / or easier to handle, in particular during mounting and unmounting. The flexibility may still allow a configuration in which parts of an insertion section deform during mounting and detachment. For example, a force for pressing an insertion section through the main opening into the recess may be smaller than a force for pulling the insertion section through the main opening out of the recess if the insertion section is flexible.

[0008] Alternatively or additionally to being configured as an elastic part, the attachment element may be configured as an extruded part. For example, the attachment element may be partially or completely formed in an extrusion process. Manufacturing may be fast and cost-effective in this case. The attachment element may be manufactured as a continuous part that is only cut to size for the respective tent model. Further, an extrusion process may facilitate manufacturing of an attachment element with an elongated geometry. For example, a cross-section of the attachment element or at least the insertion section may be uniform along a longitudinal extension of the attachment element. The longitudinal extension may correspond to a longitudinal extension of the recess along its main opening.

[0009] Alternatively or additionally to being configured as an elastic part, the attachment element may be integrally formed as one piece. Manufacturing and assembly may be fast and cost-effective in this case. Alternatively or additionally to being configured as an elastic part, the attachment element may be configured as a plastic part. The attachment element may be low-cost in this case.

[0010] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element is configured for being pressed with an insertion section through the main opening into the recess for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part. The attachment element may be pressed with an insertion section through the main opening into the recess for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part. The pressing may cause deformation of the insertion section during mounting, in particular an elastic deformation. The insertion section may remain deformed in the recess, but for example less deformed than during insertion through the main opening. For example, the insertion section can be pushed through the main opening into the recess for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part. The insertion section may reversibly deform during attachment and / or detachment. No sliding of the insertion section within the recess may be required. The insertion section may be even configured to prevent sliding within the recess, for example to prevent unwanted movement during use. For example, the insertion section may have sufficient friction and / or completely fill the recess cross section, potentially even being slightly compressed in the recess, to prevent sliding within the recess. For example, the insertion section may thus not be moved inside along the longitudinal extension of the recess without undue stress, deformation or even tearing. The attachment element can additionally or alternatively be slid with an insertion section through another opening into the recess and / or within the recess for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part.

[0011] Alternatively, the insertion section may be slid into the recess along its longitudinal extension. Such an insertion may not be through the main opening but through a further opening of the recess. For example, the insertion section may be inserted into a side opening of the groove. The insertion section may be reinforced in this case, such as with a steel cable. The insertion section may not be deformable enough without any damage to be inserted or pulled through the main opening in this case. The insertion section may not be deformed at all during such an insertion or may only be deformed slightly, in particular compared to pressing it through the main opening. For example, the insertion section may form a keder attachment with the rigid part in this case.

[0012] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element is configured for being detached from the rigid part by pulling the insertion section through the main opening out of the recess. The attachment element may be detached from the rigid part by pulling the insertion section through the main opening out of the recess. Such a detachment may be fast and easy. For example, the insertion element may elastically and / or flexibly deform to pass through the insertion section for detachment. Detachment may be destruction free. Detachment may allow replacement and easy maintenance. Deformation during detachment may be higher and / or may require greater force than during attachment.

[0013] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the insertion section is configured to elastically and / or flexibly deform when pressed through the main opening into the recess for attachment and / or when pulled through the main opening for detachment. The insertion section may elastically and / or flexibly deform when pressed through the main opening into the recess for attachment and / or when pulled through the main opening for detachment. With an elastic deformation, insertion and / or detachment into a tighter opening may be easier as compared to an identical geometry that only flexibly deforms.

[0014] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the insertion section is configured to be pressed through the main opening for attachment and / or pulled through the main opening for detachment in a direction essentially orthogonally to an area of the main opening. The insertion section may be pressed through the main opening for attachment and / or pulled through the main opening for detachment in a direction essentially orthogonally to an area of the main opening. The main opening may be arranged with an orientation transversal to a load direction on the attachment element during intended tent use.

[0015] For example, the main opening may face sideways while a canopy attached via the attachment element extends upwards. This may cause tension in the canopy to enact a force on the insertion section transversal to the main opening. This may reduce a risk of unwanted detachment and / or may allow lower attachment and detachment forces. The main opening may have a flat extension for uniform insertion and / or extraction. The main opening may have a curved shape, for example extending around a corner of the tent floor. The insertion section may be inserted and / or extracted in a roughly orthogonal direction to each section of the main opening area facing in different directions.

[0016] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element extends away from the rigid part in a direction essentially orthogonally to an area of the main opening. For example, at least a section of the body section of the attachment element adjacent to the main opening may extend orthogonally away from the area of the main opening. The extension may thus be roughly parallel to a vector normal to the main opening. The attachment element may follow a shape of the main opening in its extension. For example, if the recess extends around a corner, the attachment element may extend orthogonally to each section of the main opening area facing in different directions.

[0017] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the insertion section forms an interlocking fit with the recess with the attachment element attached to the rigid part. The interlocking fit may provide an attachment that can withstand very high loads. For example, a section of the insertion section may be arranged in an undercut of the recess. For example, the insertion section may have an arrow cross sectional shape or other shape with protruding sections that may help in retaining the insertion section in the recess. The insertion section may have multiple pairs of arms after each other forming arrows. The insertion section may also have a wedge shape with a main shaft and one or more angled arrows at one side. The insertion section may also form a kind of hook shape. The arms, for example of the arrow, may flatten to a main shaft of the arrow during insertion. After passing through the main opening, the arms may extend again and thus be spaced apart from the main shaft. The arms may then engage the walls of the recess limiting the recess, in particular adjacent to the main opening. Such a configuration may also be easier to attach than to detach.

[0018] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, a force for pressing the insertion section through the main opening into the recess is smaller than a force for pulling the insertion section through the main opening out of the recess. Such a configuration may facilitate assembly while being able to withstand high loads during use. Such a configuration may still be sufficiently easy to detach. For example, such a configuration can be provided by appropriate geometries of the insertion section and the main opening of the recess, such as an arrow shape or backward angled retention protrusions. For example, the insertion section may have an asymmetrical shape with regard to the attachment and detachment direction into the recess. For example, an abutment angle of the insertion section with walls limiting the recess during insertion through the main opening may be smaller than an abutment angle of the insertion section with walls limiting the recess during detachment.

[0019] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element seals the main opening of the recess. For example, the attachment element may completely fill up the main opening. Optionally, the attachment element may also completely fill up the recess and / or other openings, such as the side openings. Alternatively or additionally, the attachment element may comprise an extension section. The extension section may extend from the insertion section and / or a body section. The extension section may abut to an outer wall of the rigid part adjacent to the main opening. The extension section may seal the main opening alone or together with the insertion section and / or body section. The extension section may be arranged just adjacent to and / or above the main opening, for example extending along an outer surface of the rigid part. The outer wall of the rigid part may be a wall facing outward in the erected configuration and / or transport configuration of the tent. The extension section may, for example, not be connected to other elements of the tent and / or not have a further sealing function, such as sealing between the rigid part and another part, such as a roof of the tent. The extension section may only serve to prevent water and / or dirt ingress into the recess through the main opening and optionally further openings. The extension section may also serve other purposes, as detailed below. The extension section may be formed as unitarian one-piece element with the body section or insertion from which it extends. The extension section may be made from the same material as the body section and / or insertion section. The extension section may be easily manufactured in an extrusion process. The attachment element with the extension section may be formed as unitarian one-piece element.

[0020] Additionally or alternatively to sealing the main opening of the recess, the extension section may also be configured as a protective section. For example, the extension section may protect the rigid part from damage in collisions, such as with hard objects being placed in or against the tent or with other rigid parts when adjusting the tent in its transport configuration. Due to the elasticity or flexibility of the extension section, the extension section may act as kind of bumper for the rigid part. Due to a possibly generally low-cost nature of the attachment element and potential easy replaceability, damage to the extension section may also be less costly. The extension element may also protect edges of the rigid part. Edges of the rigid part may be easily damaged in collisions. Moreover, edges of the rigid part may be sharp and potentially damage other objects or be uncomfortable to a user. For example, the extension section may extend over a cut metal edge of the rigid part. The extension section may cover the edge so that no or less deburring is necessary. If damaged, attachment element with the protective section may be easily replaced at low costs, for example compared to the rigid part.

[0021] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element comprises thermoplastic vulcanizates. For example, the attachment element or at least the insertion section may consist of a thermoplastic vulcanizate. A thermoplastic vulcanizate is also referred to as TPE-v or TPV. Thermoplastic vulcanizate may be easy to injection mold and may have good recycling properties. Alternatively, some other form of TPE or TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) may be used. Thermoplastic vulcanizates may be dynamically vulcanized alloys that mostly comprise fully cured EPDM rubber particles encapsulated in a polypropylene (PP) matrix.

[0022] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment system comprises a canopy element. The canopy element may be a generally limp element. The canopy element may be formed from a textile, optionally covered with a waterproof layer. The canopy element may form a section of the canopy of the tent or the whole canopy. The canopy may form an upper part of the tent in the erected configuration. The canopy element may be attached to the attachment element. The canopy element may thus be attached to the rigid part via the attachment element. The attachment element may thus facilitate and / or improve the attachment of the canopy to a rigid part of the tent, such as the tent floor. For example, the canopy element may be permanently or detachably attached to a canopy attachment section of the attachment element.

[0023] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment of the canopy element to the attachment element is watertight. A watertight attachment may prevent water ingress during intended use at the location of the attachment. For example, the elastic or flexible property of the attachment element may seal an attachment of the canopy element to the attachment element, such as a seam in the attachment element. Alternatively or additionally, some sealant may be applied, such as glue and / or sealing strip.

[0024] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the canopy element is removably attached to the attachment element. This allows easy replacement or repair of the canopy element. Further, it may allow an opening of sections of the tent in the erected configuration. For example, the canopy element may be attached to the attachment element with a zipper or buttons. The zipper may be a watertight zipper. The inside of the zipper may comprise a fabric sealing lip. A first side of the zipper may be permanently attached to the attachment element, such as by bonding and / or sewing. A second side of the zipper may be permanently attached to the canopy element, such as by bonding and / or sewing.

[0025] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the canopy element is permanently attached to the attachment element. The canopy element may be bonded to the attachment element. For example, the attachment element may be attached with a seam, with a weld, in particular by laser welding, and / or with glue to the canopy element. Such a connection may be sturdy, lightweight and small. In addition, a tolerance chain of the attachment of the canopy element to the rigid part may be small. The seam may be watertight just because of the elasticity of the attachment element material. The permanent attachment of the canopy element may still allow easy repair and / or replacement if the attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part is non-permanent.

[0026] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the tent is adjustable between an erected configuration and a transport configuration. The attachment element forms a sealing element for a cover of the tent in the transport configuration. The attachment element may form part of the cover and thus also form an outer surface of a part of the cover. The cover may form a shell for the tent in the transport configuration. The cover may have rigid and / or limp parts. The cover may be a soft shell or hard shell. The cover may also have a combination of hard and soft parts. The cover may provide an interior space in which parts of the tent, such as the tent canopy, can be stored. For example, the attachment element may seal a gap between a lower shell part and an upper shell part. The attachment element may be a unitarian one-piece element. It is therefore not necessary to provide both a sealing element, such as between two shell parts, and separate means to attach this sealing element. For example, the attachment element may be an extruded part. The upper shell part may be formed by the roof of the tent and may be the rigid part. The lower shell part may be formed by a floor of the tent and may be the rigid part. The cover may comprise the rigid part, such as the tent roof and / or the tent floor. The sealing element, which is formed by the attachment element, may be removably attachable to the rigid part. The sealing element may be removably attached or attachable to other parts of the shell, such as a further rigid part. For example, the attachment element may be attached to the tent roof, which forms the upper shell in the transport configuration. In the transport configuration, the attachment element can be attached to the tent floor, which forms the lower shell in the transport configuration. A gap between the lower shell and upper shell may thus be sealed off. The attachment element forming the sealing element may thus provide a reliable, easy to use and cost-effective seal. The sealing element may be stretchable for attaching to the other part and to compensate different distances in the transport configuration, for example caused by an adjustable height in the transport configuration and / or the number of objects, such as blankets, pillows and mattresses remaining in the tent in the transport configuration. The sealing element may have a defined shape for each height of the tent in the transport configuration. The sealing element may be attached to the other rigid part in a recess, such as previously described for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part. The attachment element may thus comprise a second insertion section, for example opposite the other insertion section. For the attachment there may also be an additional fixation element, such as a clamp, a hard part or a lock. The fixation element may, for example, form positive interlocking fit, friction fit, snap-connection and / or otherwise clip into the other rigid part. The fixation element may be connected to the further rigid part with an elastic deformation of the fixation element. For example, the fixation element may have a hook at its end opposite the attachment element that may be detachably hooked to the further rigid part. The fixation element may, for example, be a plastic part or metal part, such as an aluminum extruded part. Such fixation elements may be attached to the sealing element in the same manner as the rigid part, thus having a recess in which the sealing element is inserted, such as with another insertion section. The sealing element may also just cover a gap between the rigid part and other parts of the shell, such as the further rigid part, without being attached to the further rigid part. The sealing element may form a sealing lip, for example with a free end.

[0027] The attachment system and / or the tent may have multiple attachment elements. For example, a first and second attachment element may be attached to the same or different rigid parts of the tent. For example, the first attachment element may form a sealing element in the transport configuration and the second attachment element may attach the canopy to the rigid part. The use of multiple attachment elements may allow identical manufacturing and / or mounting processes to be used. For example, there may thus be a synergy when a sealing element is configured as a thermoplastic elastomer part and attachment of the tent canopy is provided by a thermoplastic elastomer part. Both parts may have the same or similar shape. The rigid part may comprise grooves for both the first and second attachment element, for example manufactured in a continuous casting process.

[0028] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, a body section of the sealing element may have a corrugated shape. The corrugated shape may improve sealing compliance, for example allowing the sealing element to change its length without undue stress. The body section may extend between two insertion sections of the sealing element. Alternatively or additionally, the body section may form a free end of the sealing element. A corrugated shape may be a meandering extension between two ends of the sealing element, such as between its first insertion section and a free end or its optional second insertion section.

[0029] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element has a section arranged inside the recess and a section arranged outside the recess. Both sections may have the same material. For example, both sections may consist of the same material, such as a thermoplastic elastomer. Both sections may be a unitarian single piece, for example an extruded element. The attachment element may extend through the main opening. For example, the insertion section may be arranged in the recess and the body section may extend through the recess. For example, elements for removable attachment of further elements, such as a zipper for attachment of the canopy, may be arranged outside of the recess. For example, the section forming the sealing between other parts of the tent cover in the transport configuration, such as the tent roof and tent floor, may be arranged outside of the recess.

[0030] In other embodiments, the attachment element is not arranged within the main opening of the recess, for example being completely arranged inside the recess. For example, another element attached to the attachment element, such as the canopy or other fabric element, may extend through the main opening in this case. The other element, such as the canopy, may be inserted through the main opening when attaching the attachment element to the rigid part, such as by pressing the attachment element through the main opening.

[0031] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, the attachment element forms a closed loop around the rigid part. For example, the attachment element may be formed as a closed loop by casting. Such an attachment element may be particularly sturdy.

[0032] According to an embodiment of the attachment system, two ends of the attachment element are attached to each other. For example, in a circumferential direction, the attachment element may be attached at two ends, thus forming a loop. For example, the attachment element may extend circumferentially around the rigid part. The attachment element may be provided in the form of an elongated element, such as a string. Before or after insertion, the two ends may be attached to each other. The attachment may be permanent, for example by bonding, such as gluing and / or welding. The attachment may be non-permanent, for example with a connector part. The attachment element that is not formed as a continuous loop during manufacturing may be easy to mount and cost-effective to manufacture. Alternatively, there may be a small gap between the two ends, for example arranged in the recess of the rigid part.

[0033] A second aspect relates to a tent. The tent comprises a rigid part with a receiving recess, such as a floorboard with a circumferential groove. The recess may have a main opening. Further, the tent comprises an attachment system according to the first aspect. Embodiments, examples and features of the first aspect constitute embodiments, examples and features of the second aspect and vice-versa. The attachment system may comprise the rigid part. The attachment element is attached to the rigid part with an insertion section of the attachment element arranged in the recess of the rigid part.

[0034] A third aspect relates to the use of a part. The part may be configured as an elastic, such as a thermoplastic elastomer part, or flexible part. Alternatively or additionally, the part may also be configured as an extruded part and / or unitarian single piece part. The part may be configured as the attachment element of the attachment system according to the first aspect. The part may be used as an attachment element for attachment in a receiving recess of a rigid part of a tent. The tent may be configured as a tent according to the second aspect. Embodiments, examples and features of the first aspect and second aspect constitute embodiments, examples and features of the third aspect and vice-versa. The part may, for example, be used as a sealing element or to attach a further element, such as a canopy of the tent.

[0035] According to an embodiment, the part is used for attaching a canopy element of the tent to the rigid part of the tent. According to another embodiment, the part is used as a sealing element for a cover of the tent in its transport configuration.

[0036] In other embodiments, the part may generally be an extruded part and / or unitarian single piece part instead of or in addition to being an elastic and / or flexible part.

[0037] A fourth aspect relates to a method of attaching parts of a tent. The first part may be an attachment element and a second part a rigid part of the tent. A further part may be a canopy element. The method may relate to the use of a part according to the third aspect and thus to the tent according to the second aspect and the attachment system according to the first aspect. For example, the method may assemble the attachment system and / or the tent. [0038] The method comprises a step of providing an attachment element, wherein the attachment element may be configured as an elastic or flexible part. Alternatively or additionally, the attachment element may also be configured as an extruded part and / or unitarian single piece part, as detailed above. For example, the attachment element may be manufactured in a continuous casting or injection molding process. A continuous casting process may correspond to an extrusions process. The method comprises as step of providing a rigid part, wherein the rigid part has a receiving recess with a main opening, such as a groove with an opening at its topside. For example, the rigid part may be manufactured in a continuous casting or injection molding process.

[0039] The method comprises a step of inserting an insertion section of the attachment element through the main opening into the recess for attachment of the attachment element to the rigid part. The insertion section may be pushed through the recess along its longitudinal extension. For example, no sliding of the insertion section within the recess is required for arriving at a desired mounted position. The longitudinal extension may be an extension along the recess and / or the longest extension of the attachment element. For example, the longitudinal extension may correspond to a direction of extrusion during manufacturing of the insertion section and / or attachment element. After insertion, a part of the attachment element may extend through the main opening. For example, insertion may comprise a pressing of the insertion section through the main opening and / or an elastically or flexibly deforming the insertion section. The method may comprise a step of attaching the canopy element to the attachment element, for example at an end opposite the insertion section, such as by bonding or closing a zipper.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF EMBODIMENTS

[0042] Fig. 6 shows a tent attached to a roof top of a motor vehicle in an erected configuration. The tent comprises a canopy element 20 that forms a circumferential wall of the tent in the erected configuration. The tent is attached to a roof top carrier of the vehicle with a first rigid part 10, which forms a tent floor. The canopy element 20 is attached at its bottom to the first rigid part 10. A roof of the tent is formed by a second rigid part 12, to which the canopy element 20 is attached with its upper end. The first and second rigid parts 10, 12 are held spaced apart by tent poles in the erected configuration, thus tensioning the canopy element 20 in-between. In the erected configuration, the tent provides an interior living space for users.

[0043] Figs. 7 and 8 show the tent in its transport configuration. The tent is still attached to the vehicle but has been collapsed, thus not providing the interior living space anymore. A third attachment element 30, of which details will be explained further below, is connected to the first and second rigid parts 10, 12 along an outer circumference. The first rigid part 10 forms a bottom shell in the transport configuration and the second rigid part 12 forms a top shell in the transport configuration. The third attachment element 30, which is elastic, forms a circumferential wall of a cover for the canopy element 20 and for further parts of the tent in the transport configuration. The cover is thus a partial hard shell and partial softshell with the third attachment element 30 forming a sealing element for the cover in the transport configuration. In addition, the third attachment element 30 may also keep the second rigid part 12 in its position for the transport configuration by attachment to the first rigid part 10. The canopy element 20 is stored within this cover. The third attachment element 30 comprises a corrugated body section 40 to compensate for potentially different heights of the tent in the transport configuration. In other embodiments, the body section 40 is non-corrugated, for example with a straight extension. An attachment system is provided for attachment of both the canopy element 20 and the sealing element, of which embodiments will be discussed further down below. The rigid parts 10, 12 or overall the tent may be slightly modified in the different embodiments.

[0044] Fig. 1 shows a part of the tent in the transport configuration. The tent comprises the first rigid part 10, which forms the tent floor. The tent further comprises the second rigid part 12, which forms the tent roof. Each rigid part 10, 12 comprises an aluminum extruded hard sheet 14 that forms a board. Each sheet 14 is circumferentially framed by a frame 16. The frame 16 may comprise one or more aluminum profiles that are manufactured in a continuous casting process. The second rigid part 12 also comprises a thermoformed ABS cap sheet 18. However, other materials and / or manufacturing processes may be used for the rigid parts 10, 12 in other embodiments. For example, the rigid parts 10, 12 may be configured as steel elements or thermoset plastic parts. In another embodiment, the configuration may be reversed, with the first rigid part 10 forming the tent floor and the second rigid part 12 forming the tent roof. In yet another embodiment, the tent only comprises one of the first and second rigid part 10, 12, such as only a tent floor.

[0045] In the transport configuration, the second rigid part 12 forms the top shell of the cover of the tent. The first rigid part 10 forms the bottom shell of the cover of the tent. The canopy element 20 is attached between the two rigid parts 10, 12. When adjusting the tent from its transport configuration into its erected configuration, the second rigid part 12 is lifted upwards and kept in position, for example by the tent poles. The canopy element 20 is tensioned between the two rigid parts 10, 12, thus forming a circumferential side wall of the tent.

[0046] The canopy element 20 is attached to both rigid parts 10, 12 with the attachment system. The attachment system comprises a first attachment element 22 and a second attachment element 24. A majority of both the first and second attachment elements 22, 24 are formed as a thermoplastic elastomer part, here comprising thermoplastic vulcanizates. The first and second attachment elements 22, 24 are configured as elastic parts. The section of the first and second attachment elements 22, 24 formed from thermoplastic elastomer are manufactured in an extrusion process. In other embodiments, the first and second attachment elements 22, 24 are configured as flexible parts only. Each of the first and second rigid parts 10, 12 has a receiving recess in the form of a circumferential groove 26 extending along the frame 16 on a side facing the other one of the rigid parts 12, 10. A main opening of each groove 26 thus faces towards the other one of the rigid parts 12, 10. The first and second attachment elements 22, 24 each comprise an insertion section 28. The insertion section 28 is presently threaded sideways through side openings into the corresponding frame 16 before closing the frame 16. A cross-section of these insertion sections 28 corresponds in shape to the cross-section of the groove 26 to seal the groove 26 and the main opening. In other embodiments, the insertion section 28 may be formed and inserted as an insertion section 32 of the third attachment element 30 described further below.

[0047] The first and second attachment elements 22, 24 each comprise an extension section 34 abutting to an outer wall of the rigid part 10, here the frame 16, adjacent to the main opening of the groove 26. This provides an additional sealing effect.

[0048] At an end opposite the insertion section 28, the first and second attachment elements 22, 24 each comprise an attachment section 36 formed by a side of a zipper 38, which are separately formed to the rest of the attachment elements 22, 24. Said side of the zipper 38 is permanently attached to a body section 40 of the corresponding first and second attachment element 22, 24 extending between the attachment section 36 and the insertion section 28. For example, the respective side of the zipper 38 is glued and / or sewn to the body section 40. A second half of the zipper 38 is attached to the canopy element 20, for example by gluing and / or a seam. The canopy element 20 is thus removably attached to the first rigid part 10 and the second rigid part 12 via the first attachment element 22 and the second attachment element 24, respectively. In another embodiment, the canopy element 20 is permanently attached to the first and second attachment elements 22, 24, for example by gluing and / or sewing. The two attachment elements 22, 24 may alternatively or additionally be removably attached to the two rigid parts 10, 12, for example in the same manner as the third attachment element 30 described below.

[0049] The cover of the tent also comprises the third attachment element 30 forming another part of the attachment system. The third attachment element 30 forms a sealing element that covers the circumferential gap between the first rigid part 10 and the second rigid part 12 in the transport configuration. The third attachment element 30 is integrally formed in an extrusion process with a uniform cross-section along its longitudinal extension as one piece and thus has a unitarian one-piece configuration. The whole third attachment element 30 is formed from thermoplastic elastomer.

[0050] The insertion section 32 of the third attachment element 30 does not have a round cross-section like the first and second attachment elements 22, 24. Instead, the insertion section 32 has a cross-sectional shape of an arrow. Further, the frame 16 of the second rigid part 12 has another groove 26 extending circumferentially around an outer side with its main opening facing sideways. The arms of the arrow-shaped insertion section 32 may elastically flatten against a shaft of the insertion section 32, so that the third attachment element 30 can be pressed with its insertion section 32 through the main opening of the further groove 26 of the second rigid part 12 and thus into the recess for attachment of the third attachment element 30 to the second rigid part 12. The arms then unfold and thus anchor the third attachment element 30 in the style of an undercut at the walls surrounding the main opening of the further groove 26 of the frame 16 of the second rigid part 12. An interlocking fit is thus provided, albeit removably in some embodiments. A form of a snap connection or mount between the third attachment element 30 and the second rigid part 12 may thus be formed. The third attachment element 30 may be removed from the second rigid part 12 by pulling its insertion section 32 out of the corresponding groove 26 through the respective main opening without any need for disassembly, unlike the first and second attachment elements 22, 24. A force for pressing the insertion section 32 of the third attachment element 30 through the main opening into the further groove 26 is smaller than a force for pulling the insertion section 32 through the main opening into the recess in the form of further groove 26. The third attachment element 30 also comprises an extension section 34 abutting to an outer wall of the second rigid part 12 adjacent to the main opening of the corresponding groove 26, which improves sealing.

[0051] The third attachment element 30 is extending around the outer edge of the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10 in the transport configuration, as shown in Fig. 1, thus sealing the gap between the two rigid parts 10, 12. In another embodiment, the third attachment element 30 is removably attachable to the first rigid part 10 in the transport configuration, for example with a clamp or in a similar manner as the attachment to the second rigid part 12, for example with another insertion section. The main opening of the further groove 26 in which the third attachment 30 element is attached, is facing in a different direction than the weight forces and / or pulling forces are acting on the second rigid part 12, thus preventing unwanted detachment from the second rigid part 12. A main opening of an optional further groove 26 in the first rigid part 10 for removably attaching the third attachment element 30 in the transport configuration may face towards the second rigid part 12 to facilitate detachment therefrom when erecting the tent.

[0052] A body section 40 of the third attachment element 30 extending between the two rigid parts 10, 12 has at least a section with a corrugated shape. This facilitates length change of the third attachment element 30 to compensate for different heights in the transport configuration, for example due to remaining items in the inside of the tent in transport configuration and / or a differently folded canopy element 20. Further, the corrugated section of the body section 40 facilitates pulling the third attachment element 30 downwards to fully seal the gap and / or attach the third attachment element 30 to the first rigid part 10.

[0053] All three attachment elements 22, 24, 30 form a full loop around the circumference of the rigid parts 10, 12. The attachment elements 22, 24, 30 may be provided as a continuous closed loop or a string-like element. In the case of a string-like element, the two circumferential ends may be bonded together or attached with another element, such as a clamp.

[0054] Fig. 2 illustrates a second embodiment of the attachment system. In the following, differences as compared to the first embodiment of Fig. 1 will be elaborated. Fig. 2 shows only an attachment of the canopy element 20 to the first rigid part 10. Attachment to the second rigid part 12 may be identical to the attachment to the first rigid part 10 or configured as shown in any of the other embodiments. Fig. 2 does not show attachment of the third attachment element 30. The second embodiment of the attachment system may not comprise the third attachment element 30. In another configuration, the attachment system comprises the third attachment element 30, in which attachment may be identical to the attachment of the canopy element 20 or any of the other attachment elements shown in the other embodiments.

[0055] In the second embodiment, the canopy element 20 is sewn directly to the attachment section 36 of the first attachment element 22. When the canopy element 20 is directly sewn to an attachment element, the respective attachment section 36 may be considered as a body section as well. For the purpose of canopy attachment, the canopy element 20 and the attachment section 36 overlap, wherein the attachment section 36 is formed as an elastic section from the same material as the rest of the unitarian one-piece design of the first attachment element 22.

[0056] The extension section 34 again abuts a wall of the first rigid part 16 limiting the recess for attachment of the first attachment element 22. Unlike in the first embodiment, the extension section 34 does not conform to an outer shape of the frame 16 but rather just abuts an edge section.

[0057] In the second embodiment, the recess in the first rigid part 10 is partially limited by the frame 16 and partially limited by the hard sheet 14. The main opening of the recess is thus facing inwards toward the interior living space in the erected configuration along a circumference of the tent. The main opening is thus also facing orthogonally towards a direction of a force tensioning the canopy element 20 between the first rigid part 10 and the second rigid part 12. The force tensioning the canopy element 20 is therefore not acting in a direction for detachment of the first attachment element 22 from the first rigid part 10.

[0058] The insertion section 32 of the first attachment element is formed differently to the first embodiment and rather similar in function to the insertion section 32 of the third attachment element 30 in the first embodiment. Instead of an arrow shape, the insertion section 32 is wedge shaped. The insertion section 32 has a main shaft with two angled arms extending away from the hard sheet 14 and backwards with respect to an attachment direction into the recess. The insertion section 32 is thus easy to insert by sliding it along the top surface of the hard sheet 14. The arms will flatten onto the main shaft while passing through the main opening. When pulling on the insertion section 32 in the reverse direction, the arms will engage the wall of the frame 16 adjacent the main opening, creating a positive interlocking fit. Detachment thus requires significantly more force due to the required significantly larger deformation and larger contact angle of the arms with the first rigid part 10. In the second embodiment, attachment and detachment of the canopy element can be performed in a similar way to the third attachment element 30 in the first embodiment. No zipper is required. No sliding of the first attachment element 22 along the longitudinal and thus circumferential extension of the recess is required.

[0059] Fig. 3 illustrates a third embodiment of the attachment system. In the following, differences as compared to the first embodiment of Fig. 1 and the second embodiment of Fig. 2 will be elaborated. Fig. 3 shows only an attachment of the canopy element 20 to the second rigid part 12. Attachment to the first rigid part 10 may be identical to the attachment to the second rigid part 12 or configured as shown in any of the other embodiments.

[0060] In the third embodiment, the second attachment element 24 is configured rather similar to the first attachment element 22 in the second embodiment. The canopy element 20 is also sewn directly to the attachment section 36 of the second attachment element 24. The second attachment element 24 is formed as an elastic part from one material in an unitarian one-piece design by an extrusion process. However, the insertion section 32 is formed as an arrow, similar to the insertion section 32 of the third attachment element 30 of the first embodiment. Further, the extension section for 34 for sealing has been omitted. The attachment to the second rigid part 12 is at a top of the tent, so there is less risk for water ingress. The main opening of the recess of the second rigid part 12 is formed within the frame 16 and facing inwards at an extension of the tent roof. The recess and thus main opening extend along a circumference of the tent.

[0061] In the third embodiment, the third attachment element 30 is formed identical to the first embodiment for attachment to the second rigid part 12. At the bottom, the third attachment element 30 is not resting or otherwise directly attached to the first rigid part 10. Instead, a bottom edge of the third attachment element 30 also forms an insertion section 32 with an arrow-shaped cross-section. This insertion section 32 is attached to a recess of a clamp 42. The recess in the clamp 42 has a main opening extending along its longitudinal extension through which the insertion section 32 can be pressed for attachment and pulled for detachment. The clamp 42 can thus easily be replaced. In one exemplary configuration, the clamp 42 is configured as an aluminum extruded frame part. In other configurations, the clamp 42 is configured as a plastic part. As can be best seen in Fig. 8, the attachment system comprises two clamps 42 per straight major edge of the essentially rectangularly shaped first rigid part 10. The major edges of the tent are each facing a side of the vehicle when the tent is mounted to the vehicle. In other configurations, only one such clamp 42 is provided per major edge and / or clamps 42 are also provided for the minor edges facing towards the front and bottom when the tent is mounted to the vehicle. The clamp 42 may also extend at least along the majority of the respective edges in some configurations. In Fig. 8, it is shown that the clamps 42 may also comprise a gripping section extending away from the first rigid part 10 and generally the interior of the tent, allowing for easier manipulation by the user.

[0062] The clamps 42 partially extend around an outer edge of the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10 when attached to the first rigid part 10. At a bottom, the clamp 42 comprises a hook section 44 that engages a respective hooking recess at a bottom of the first rigid part 10. Further, a top of the clamp 42 comprises a detent 46 that engages a corresponding small protrusion at the top of the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10. The clamp 42 may thus be hooked to the first rigid part 10 to attach the third attachment element 30 and thus close the cover of the tent in the transport configuration. For erecting the tent, a user may simply unhook the clamps 42 from the first rigid part 10 to open the cover and detach the sealing element. Hooking and unhooking may involve elastic deformation of the clamp 42 and / or the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10. In some configurations, engagement of the clamp 42 may be strong enough to keep the cover closed in the transport configuration when driving with the vehicle. In other configurations, additional fixation means and / or locking means are provided.

[0063] Fig. 4 illustrates a combination of configurations from the previous embodiments as a fourth embodiment of the attachment system. The third attachment element 30 is configured and attached as in the third embodiment, including clamp 42 and the corresponding geometry from the first and second rigid parts 10, 12. The first and second attachment elements 22, 24 are slid sideways into the corresponding recesses in the first and second rigid part 10, 12, similar to the first embodiment. The insertion sections 28 of the first and second attachment element 22, 24 in the fourth embodiment have a round cross-section at their end. However, the corresponding recesses and rigid parts 10, 12 still have the form of the embodiment of third embodiment. The first and second attachment elements 22, 24 are formed as an elastic part from one material in an unitarian one-piece design by an extrusion process. The attachment sections 36 are not formed by zippers but rather by an integral section of the first and second attachment elements 22, 24. The canopy element 20 is sewn directly onto the attachment sections 36 of the first and second attachment element 22, 24, corresponding to the configuration shown in the second and third embodiment.

[0064] Fig. 5 illustrates a combination of configurations from the previous embodiments as a fifth embodiment of the attachment system. The first attachment element 22 is formed and attached as in the second embodiment. The second attachment element 24 is formed and attached as in the third embodiment. Configuration and attachment of the third attachment element 30 is similar to the third and fourth embodiment. The clamp 42 is configured slightly different, though. In the fifth embodiment, the clamp 42 is missing the hook section 44, instead just being attached to the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10 by encompassing the frame 16. The detent 46 and the abutment provide a primarily friction-based retention, optional supporting by the clamp 42 elastically grasping onto the frame 16 of the first rigid part 10. The clamp 42 may thus be easier to attach and detach.

[0065] The recesses in all embodiments are formed as longitudinally extending grooves 26.Reference signs

second embodiment

[0055]In the second embodiment, the canopy element 20 is sewn directly to the attachment section 36 of the first attachment element 22. When the canopy element 20 is directly sewn to an attachment element, the respective attachment section 36 may be considered as a body section as well. For the purpose of canopy attachment, the canopy element 20 and the attachment section 36 overlap, wherein the attachment section 36 is formed as an elastic section from the same material as the rest of the unitarian one-piece design of the first attachment element 22.

first embodiment

[0056]The extension section 34 again abuts a wall of the first rigid part 16 limiting the recess for attachment of the first attachment element 22. Unlike in the first embodiment, the extension section 34 does not conform to an outer shape of the frame 16 but rather just abuts an edge section.

[0057]In the second embodiment, the recess in the first rigid part 10 is partially limited by the frame 16 and partially limited by the hard sheet 14.
