Abstract
Description
[0001] The present invention relates to fittings for a window or a door. More specifically the invention relates to rotatably connecting a fittings component that can be inserted into a fittings groove of a profile of a window or door with a rotatable arm.
[0002] Typically, windows are construction components constructed from profiles, for example profiles from aluminium. Typically, a window profile is integrated into another construction component, such as for example a wall, a roof, or a door. Profiles are also used for construction components other than windows, for example, doors. Windows can be fixed windows or parts of the window, such as for example leaves, can move relative to each other or to a fixed frame. To enable movement, for security or for other functional purposes, window fittings are used. The window fittings comprise fittings components that can be slideably or otherwise applied, in fittings grooves provided to that end in the window profiles.
[0003] In many cases the movement is a hinge movement around a hinge shaft. Therefore, there is a need to be able to fasten a hinge arm to a fittings component which, when in use, is applied in a profile.
[0004] A known example of such fittings component is a leaf housing that fits closely into a fittings groove of a leaf profile and therefore can be firmly fastened to the profile and on which a hinge arm can be mounted in a way that allows a hinge movement.
[0005] Known ways, each with their own shortcomings, to fasten the hinge arm to the leaf housing include the examples as described hereinafter. A usual way for mounting a hinge shaft is with a rivet connection whereby the head is plastically deformed. To make this connection, space is needed for an eccentrically moving rivet punch. This space may cause a weakening of the leaf housing. Yet another possibility is via a pressing operation. However, this causes a lot of internal stresses in the leaf housing such that the connection can only handle a lower load. Another possibility is a shaft with circlips. A lot of space is needed for this and possibly more space than is available for mounting a concealed hinge arm for example.
[0006] An objective of the invention is to provide an alternative solution for efficiently and effectively rotatably connecting a rotatable arm to a fittings component. Preferably, the connection is detachable and / or removable.
[0007] Another objective of the invention is to provide a solution for rotatably connecting a rotatable arm to a fittings component while remaining reliable under continuing load and preferably is maximally loadable such that it also applicable in case of bigger loads without deformation of the components, for example when the fittings component is inserted when in use in the fittings groove of a big and / or heavy leaf.
[0008] Yet a further objective of the invention is to provide a solution for rotatably connecting a rotatable arm to a fittings component whereby, when in use, the rotatable arm can be concealed in the profile.
[0009] To at least partially provide a solution to one or several of the aforementioned shortcomings and / or to meet one or several of the aforementioned objectives, the invention provides fittings comprising a fittings component provided with a body with a protruding part, and a passage opening; a rotatable arm with a shaft passage; and a shaft, for rotatably connecting the rotatable arm to the fittings component, which extends in a longitudinal direction (L) from an outer end to an inner end, whereby the shaft comprises a broadened head at the outer end, a radially protruding lip at or near the inner end and an intermediate part.
[0010] The fittings component of the fittings can be attached in a fittings groove, provided to that end, in a profile of the window. Fittings grooves are known and are typically formed by two upright parallel ribs of the profiles which are positioned at a distance from each other and the free edges of which are bent towards each other to form two undercut longitudinal grooves. In the fittings grooves between the free edges, fittings components may be slideably or otherwise, preferably, fittingly applied. Typically, if fitting components are slidable, said components are provided at one longitudinal edge or both longitudinal edges with lateral guides which engage with the corresponding undercut longitudinal groove or longitudinal grooves of the fittings groove for slidingly guiding the fitting components into the fittings groove.
[0011] The body of the fittings component can be provided with facing longitudinal edges, whereby the fittings component can be attached in the fittings groove with the respective longitudinal edges facing corresponding free edges which laterally delimit the fittings groove. The longitudinal edges may have a regular or irregular form. Preferably, the longitudinal edges are adapted such that, when in use, when the fittings component is applied in the fittings groove, touch the corresponding free edge of the fittings groove on one or more points.
[0012] The protruding part of the fittings component laterally protrudes outwardly from the body, whereby the position of the passage opening is chosen such that the passage opening partially overlaps laterally with the protruding part and with the body. In other words, the passage opening is located at one of the longitudinal edges of the body.
[0013] At an outer end of the passage opening, the passage opening of the fittings component comprises a part that is fully delimited in transversal direction. Moreover, the passage opening of the fittings component is configured such that the intermediate part of the shaft fits in the passage opening and the shaft passage of the rotatable arm is configured such that the intermediate part of the shaft fits in the shaft passage and the broadened head does not.
[0014] In assembled condition of the fittings, the arm is rotatably connected to the body of the fittings component using the shaft applied in the passage opening and the shaft passage with the lip hooking on the body, whereby the body and the arm are enclosed between the lip and the broadened head of the shaft.
[0015] Preferably, the part that is fully delimited in transversal direction of the passage opening of the fittings component and the shaft passage of the rotatable arm, have a substantially cylindrical form and the intermediate part comprises a substantially cylindrical part near the outer end of the shaft that can be fittingly applied in the fully delimited part of the passage opening and in the shaft passage.
[0016] In the configuration according to the invention, the rotation centre of the shaft and thus of the rotation movement of the arm relative to the fittings component lies near or at the longitudinal side of the body and in the condition that the fittings component is mounted in a fittings groove of a profile thus also at or near the edge of the fittings groove. This means that the body of the fittings component has a cross-section in transversal direction, without or with very limited weakening, which can be maximally chosen to fit in the transversal direction between the edges in the fittings groove such that also when in use, the strength of the profile can be utilised optimally. A pulling force is exercised closer against the centre line of the body compared to, for example, a classic rivet on a flange. Consequently, there is a smaller torsional force.
[0017] The present invention also has the advantage that a rotatable arm can be mounted in a non-invasive way on a profile, preferably a window profile, using a fittings component that is applied in a fittings groove of the profile. Moreover, the rotatable arm is very simple to mount, the internal stresses generated by the assembly are very limited and the construction according to the present invention is very compact.
[0018] The term "rotatable arm" in the context of the present invention indicates a component that is or can be tiltably mounted on a fittings component which can be applied in a fittings groove of a profile. The ultimate goal is to let two or more construction components move in a controlled way relative to each other. To this end the present invention, and more specifically the rotatable arm, the fittings component and the hinge shaft can form a direct hinge between two construction components, whereby one construction component is connected to the rotatable arm and the other construction component (e.g. a window profile) to the fittings component, such that said construction components can be tilted relative to each other, but the present invention can also be part of a larger system to be able to let two or more construction components move in a controlled way relative to each other. By way of example the present invention can be part of a four-rod system, whereby the rotatable arm, the fittings component and the hinge shaft form one of the corners in the four-rod system. Another application of the present invention can be a limit stay, whereby for example the fittings component is attached to a first construction component (for example a door in which a profile is applied in which the fittings component fits) and the rotatable arm is attached via an actuator (e.g. a mechanical, pneumatic or hydraulic spring) to a second construction component (e.g. a wall or a door frame).
[0019] In an embodiment according to the invention, a lip recess is provided at an inner end of the passage opening of the fittings component, whereby the lip recess is configured to receive the lip.
[0020] Also in an embodiment according to the invention the passage opening of the body of the fittings component comprises a part that is partly open in transversal direction between the part that is fully delimited in transversal direction and the inner end of the passage opening. Preferably, the opening of the part that is partly open is located radially opposite the lip recess. This allows the arm to be rotatably connected to the fittings component by applying the shaft in the shaft passage and subsequently in the passage opening until the radially protruding lip is located in the part of the transversal passage that is partly open in transversal direction, on the level of the lip recess. Subsequently the lip can be applied in the lip recess by rotating the shaft around its longitudinal shaft. If desired, this also allows the shaft to be removed by unscrewing the shaft. To facilitate the rotation of the shaft, the shaft can optionally be provided with a rotation recess applied in the head or at the inner end, said rotation recess being configured for easily rotating the shaft, for example using a tool such as a screwdriver or a torx key.
[0021] Preferably, the lip recess comprises one or several protrusions that are configured to fixedly keep the lip in a position whereby the lip is rotated in the lip recess to thus prevent any unintentional rotation. Alternatively or additionally the lip can be fastened in said position with glue or with a pressing operation.
[0022] Preferably, the dimensions of the lip recess and of the radially protruding lip are aligned to each other such that the radially protruding lip of the shaft fits flushly in the lip recess. This allows the space in the fitting groove to be used optimally.
[0023] Also in an embodiment according to the invention the intermediate part of the shaft comprises a narrowed part. The narrowed part of the shaft together with the part of the passage opening of the fittings component, that is partly open in transversal direction, allows the shaft to be inserted easily, if relevant tiltedly, through the passage opening and the shaft opening and subsequently to be rotated such that the lip hooks on the body. Consequently the shaft can be provided, if desired, with a greater radially protruding lip. Preferably, the narrowed part comprises a substantially flat surface positioned radially opposite the protruding lip. The configuration is such that in mounted condition of the shaft with the lip hooking on the body, this substantially flat surface of the narrowed part is substantially parallel with the nearby longitudinal edge of the body of the fittings component and preferably does not protrude, or barely protrudes, outwardly relative to said longitudinal edge. Consequently, when in use, when the fittings component with the rotatable arm connected thereto is applied in a fittings groove, this substantially flat surface is positioned adjacently opposite the corresponding edge of the fittings groove. As such, when in use, said edge of the fittings grooves prevents the shaft from tilting and / or rotating which benefits the strength of the connection. Optionally, the narrowed part of the shaft can be provided with an outer shell surface that lies in the extension of the cylindrical part of the shaft.
[0024] In a further embodiment according to the invention the fittings component of the fittings is a hinge housing that can be attached in the fittings groove of the profile of a leaf of the window along an outer contour of the leaf and the rotatable arm is a hinge arm. In this way, for example, the fittings may comprise a main arm, an intermediate arm and a frame fittings component provided with a frame body that can be attached along an inner contour of a fixed frame of the window, whereby the main arm and the intermediate arm are mutually hingedly connected, whereby one end of the main arm is hingedly connected to the frame body and the other end is hingedly connected to the hinge housing and whereby one end of the intermediate arm is hingedly connected to the frame body and the other end is hingedly connected to the hinge arm. The fittings can be configured such that in a close position of the fittings, whereby the main arm, the intermediate arm and the hinge arm mutually extend substantially in a parallel way relative to each other, the main arm and the hinge arm are located next to each other. An advantage of this configuration is that because the main arm and the hinge arm are located next to each other in close position, this allows them to have a maximum thickness in the limited space in the profile such that a higher load is possible without a risk of deformation of the relevant arms.
[0025] The invention also relates to a window provided with fittings as described in the previous embodiments or a combination thereof.
[0026] The invention also relates to a method for rotatably connecting a rotatable arm to a fittings component, comprising the steps of: a) providing fittings, as described in the previous embodiments or a combination thereof, with a rotatable arm, a shaft and a body; b) inserting the inner end of the shaft through the shaft passage of the rotatable arm and subsequently through the passage opening of the body, whereby preferably the protruding lip is kept along the open side of a part, that is partly open in transversal direction, of the passage opening, and c) hooking the shaft with the lip on the body by rotating the shaft around the longitudinal direction such that the lip hooks on the body, or if a lip recess is provided that the lip is rotated in the lip recess, thus rotatably connecting the rotatable arm to the body, whereby the body and the arm are enclosed between the lip and the broadened head of the shaft.
[0027] In an embodiment according to the invention the method comprises the further steps of: d) inserting the body with the arm connected thereto in a fittings groove of a profile of a window such that the body and the rotatable arm can be concealed in the profile.
[0028] With the intention of better showing the characteristics of the invention, a few preferred embodiments of fittings and a method according to the invention are described hereinafter by way of an example, without any limiting nature, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein: figure 1 schematically shows a perspective view of an embodiment of the fittings according to the invention, whereby in figures 1A,1B,1C respectively different perspectives during different steps of an embodiment of the method according to the invention are shown; figure 2 shows a magnified view of the component indicated with F2 in figure 1A in different perspectives; figure 3 shows a magnified view of the component partially indicated with F3 in fig.1A; figure 4 shows a perspective view of different positions of the fittings shown in figure 1 with the rotatable arm connected to a frame fittings component, whereby figures 4A,4B,C respectively show the close position, the 90° open position and the 180° open position; figures 5A and 5B partially show a view of the fittings shown in fig.4 applied in a window profile, respectively a perspective view and a cross-section view; figure 6 shows a perspective view of an alternative embodiment of the shaft of the fittings according to the invention; figure 7 shows different perspectives of a further alternative embodiment of the shaft of the fittings according to the invention.
[0029] The example shown in figures 1 to 5 of fittings according to the invention is a concealed hinge for rotating a leaf of a window relative to the fixed frame. The fixed frame and leaf are constructed from profiles, for example made from aluminium, which on their inner contour and outer contour respectively are provided with fittings grooves.
[0030] A concealed hinge refers to a hinge that is integrated into the space between the leaf and the fixed frame, more specifically in the space which in close position of the window is delimited by the opposite walls of the frame and of the leaf, all this such that the hinge is not visible when the window is closed.
[0031] The hinge comprises a hinge housing 1, a hinge arm 2 with a cylindrical shaft passage 15 and a hinge shaft 3 for rotatably connecting the hinge arm to the hinge housing. The hinge housing 1 is substantially L-shaped and comprises an upward directed part 4 with guides 6 at its facing longitudinal edges and a body 5 with facing longitudinal edges 12.
[0032] The hinge housing 1 can be attached (as shown in fig.5) in the fittings grooves 7 of the profiles 8 in a corner of a leaf of a window. The fittings grooves 7 are formed by two upright parallel ribs 9 of the profiles which are positioned at a distance from each other and the free edges 10 of which are bent towards each other to form two undercut longitudinal grooves 11. To attach the hinge housing 1, the upward directed part is 4 slid into the fittings groove 7 of the vertical profile 8 with the guides 6 fittingly in the undercut longitudinal grooves. The vertical sliding movement is continued until the body 5 is fittingly slid into the fittings groove 7 of the horizontal profile 8, whereby the body touches the base of said fittings groove 7 and touches with its respective longitudinal edges 12 the corresponding free edges 10 and in other words the body is enclosed in the transversal direction between the free edges 10 of the fittings groove 7. Note that the body 5 does not extend in the undercut longitudinal grooves 11 of the fittings groove 7 of the horizontal profile 8.
[0033] The body 5 of the hinge housing 1 comprises a protruding part 13 and a passage opening 14. The protruding part 13 protrudes laterally outwardly from the body 5 relative to the nearby longitudinal edge 12, whereby the passage opening partially overlaps laterally with the protruding part 13 and with the body 5. At an outer end 20 of the passage opening 14, the passage opening 14 (shown in figure 3) of the body 5 comprises a fully delimited cylindrical part in transversal direction and at an inner end 21 of the passage opening, a lip recess 16 in the body 5. The passage opening 14 comprises a part 18 that is partly open in transversal direction between the fully delimited part 17 in transversal direction and the inner end 21 of the passage opening 14.
[0034] The hinge shaft 3 (as shown in figure 2), for rotatably connecting the hinge arm 2 to the hinge housing 1, extends in a longitudinal direction (L) from an outer end 22 to an inner end 23. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a broadened head 24 at the outer end 22, a substantially cylindrical part 26 nearby the outer end and a radially protruding lip 25 at the inner end. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a narrowed part 27 which comprises an outer shell surface which lies in the extension of the cylindrical part 26 of the hinge shaft. The narrowed part 27 comprises a substantially flat surface 28 radially opposite the protruding lip 25. This flat surface 28 shown is substantially parallel with the longitudinal direction of the hinge shaft 3, but can also be at an angle with the hinge shaft, such as for example an angle between -30° and 30°.
[0035] The method for rotatably connecting the hinge shaft 3 with the hinge housing 1 is very simple. Various steps of this are shown in figures 1A to 1C.
[0036] The hinge arm 2 and the body 5 are aligned relative to each other such that the passage opening 14 and the shaft passage 15 overlap as shown in fig.1A.
[0037] Subsequently the inner end 23 of the hinge shaft 3 is inserted through the shaft passage 15 of the hinge arm 2 and subsequently through the passage opening 14 of the body 5, whereby the protruding lip 25 is kept along the open side of a part 18, that is partly open in transversal direction, of the passage opening and whereby the cylindrical part 26 of the hinge shaft overlaps with the shaft passage 15 and the fully delimited part 17 in transversal direction of the passage opening. If necessary, depending on the size of the lip 25, said insertion can be at an angle and subsequently the hinge shaft can be tilted such that it extends straight in the passage opening and the shaft passage as shown in figure 1B.
[0038] The lip 25 of the hinge shaft 3 can now be applied in the lip recess 16 by applying a screwdriver in the rotation recess and subsequently rotating the hinge shaft 180° around the longitudinal direction such that the lip is rotated in the lip recess 16, thereby rotatably connecting the hinge arm 2 and the body 5, the body 5 and the hinge arm 2 being enclosed between the lip 25 which is recessed in the lip recess 16 and the broadened head 24 of the hinge shaft 3 as shown in figure 1C. In this position the flat surface 28 of the hinge shaft 3 is substantially located parallel with the longitudinal edge 12 of the body 5. The lip recess 16 comprises protrusions 19 that are configured to keep the lip 25 in the position whereby the lip is enclosed in the lip recess 16 to thus prevent any unintentional rotation.
[0039] The hinge as shown in figure 4A, 4B, 4C respectively in close position, in 90° open position and in 180° open position further comprises a main arm 30, an intermediate arm 31 and a frame body 32 that can be attached in the frame profile along an inner contour of the fixed frame of the window. The main arm 30 and the intermediate arm 31 are mutually hingedly connected. One end of the main arm 30 is hingedly connected to the frame body and the other end is hingedly connected to the hinge housing 1. One end of the intermediate arm 31 is hingedly connected to the frame body 1 and the other end is hingedly connected to the hinge arm 2. The hinge is configured such that in the close position (as shown in figure 5A, and partially in figure 4) the main arm 30, the intermediate arm 31 and the hinge arm 2 mutually extend substantially parallel relative to each other, whereby the main arm 30 and the hinge arm 2 are located next to each other which allows a maximum thickness for said latter arms in the limited space in the profile such that a higher load is possible without a risk of deformation of the relevant arms.
[0040] Figures 6 and 7 show alternative examples of hinge shafts 3 according to the invention. The alternative examples shown are for the most part executed analogously as the embodiment shown in figures 1 to 5, the same reference numbers referring to the same or analogue components or characteristics. In the further description, the focus is therefore substantially on the differences.
[0041] The hinge shaft 3 shown in figure 6 extends in a longitudinal direction (L) from an outer end 22 to an inner end 23. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a broadened head 24, a substantially cylindrical part 26 and a radially protruding lip 25. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a narrowed part 27 with a substantially flat surface 28 radially opposite the protruding lip 25.
[0042] The hinge shaft 3 shown in figure 7 extends in a longitudinal direction (L) from an outer end 22 to an inner end 23. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a broadened head 24, a substantially cylindrical part 26 and a radially protruding lip 25. The hinge shaft 3 comprises a narrowed part 27 with a substantially flat surface 28 radially opposite the protruding lip 25. Opposite said flat surface 28, a levelling 33 is applied in the hinge shaft 3 which partially extends in the narrowed part 27 and the cylindrical part 26.
[0043] The present invention is by no means limited to the embodiments described as an example and shown in the drawings, but fittings, a window and a method according to the invention, as described in the enclosed claims, can be realised in all kinds of forms and dimensions without departing from the scope of the enclosed claims.
