[0002] ★ ★ ★ ★ ★
[0003] DESCRIPTION
[0004] The present invention concerns a process for making furniture or parts thereof from multilayer metal panels , multilayer metal panel for making furniture , part of furniture comprising such a multilayer metal panel , furniture comprising such a furniture part and kit for making a furniture part .
[0005] PRIOR ART
[0006] The furniture industry has always been looking for both technological and aesthetic new solutions .
[0007] For cheap furniture , the trend often goes in the direction of reducing production costs by using low- quality materials , such as wood panels , to which are linked other disadvantages , such as di f ficulty o f assembly, dif ficulty of transport , dimensions , and poor aesthetics due to the assembly systems used .
[0008] For example , it is well known to produce disassembled furniture that the customer or operator then has to assemble himsel f on site , which is time-consuming and laborious , and with the possibility of getting the order of the parts wrong .
[0009] It is also known to use visible j ointing systems , which are therefore of poor aesthetics and require large panel thickness to compensate for their fragility .
[0010] For high-quality furniture , the same construction systems are generally used as for cheap furniture but with better materials , but the above-mentioned problems remain . Moreover, such furniture is often completely assembled in the factory, which also presents considerable problems and transportation costs .
[0011] In addition, furniture is often produced in modular form, so that it can be conveniently composed in the various spaces available , such as kitchens . The j oining of modules , however, has the disadvantage of being hardly reversible , at least as far as the replacement of some modules and not of the entire furniture block is concerned . Consider, for example , the need to replace a dishwasher module with a shel f module below a kitchen worktop . Such an operation is generally not possible without completely removing the top .
[0012] The purpose of the present invention is to overcome all or part of the problems of the prior art .
[0013] Another preferred purpose is to provide an alternative furniture construction system to known systems . Another preferred purpose is to provide a furniture construction system that can be used with much thinner panels than conventional wood panels .
[0014] Another preferred purpose is to provide a furniture construction system that allows connections to be placed in less visible areas .
[0015] A further preferred purpose is to provide a simple and ef ficient furniture construction system.
[0016] A further preferred purpose is to provide a furniture construction system of alternative aesthetics to existing furniture .
[0017] A further preferred purpose is to provide a robust , easily transportable , easily assembled and disassembled furniture construction system .
[0018] A further preferred purpose is to provide a furniture construction system with easily customisable surface finishes .
[0019] A further preferred purpose is to provide an easy and inexpensive furniture construction system .

[0034] With reference to figure 1 , a multilayer metal panel used to make furniture according to the present invention is illustrated, and indicated as a whole by reference number 1 .
[0035] Panel 1 defines a main plane P against which it has two main faces la and lb .
[0036] Conventionally, we use as the thickness of the panel its smallest dimension, orthogonal to the main plane P, and as the planar direction any of the directions lying in the main plane P . the panel ( 1 ) comprises , overlapped in the thickness direction :
[0037] - a pair of outer metal layers 2 and 3 arranged to form the main faces la and lb, preferably in aluminium or its alloys , and
[0038] - at least one non metallic inner layer 4 .
[0039] The total thickness of the H panel is preferably less than 10 mm, preferably less than 5 mm and most preferably 4 mm.
[0040] For example, the non-metallic thickness is about
[0041] 3 mm.
[0042] Panel 1 has a rigidity suitable for forming structural parts of a furniture, particularly walls and joint areas.
[0043] Hereafter, unless otherwise specified, by panel we will mean a panel of this type.
[0044] Figure 2 shows a first step of making a part of furniture according to the present invention, in particular a step of a folding line made by applying an incision to one of the two main plane surfaces, referred to hereafter as folding incision. The step comprises arranging a panel 1 and making a folding incision 5 of a depth such that it passes through one of the two outer layers 2, and all or part of the at least one inner layer
[0045] 4 (figure 3) . The other outer layer 3 remains intact to form structural continuity between the two portions of the panel, which we shall call wings 7 for simplicity, defined by the incision. There is no limitation on the size of the wings formed by the incision; they may be, for example, small in size, suitable for forming a furniture edge rib, or large in size, suitable for forming a furniture wall. Furthermore, the defined wings of an incision may differ from each other, for example in outline and / or area, as in the case illustrated.
[0046] The incision 5 runs along a straight line to two opposite perimeter edges 6 of panel 1.
[0047] The incision 5 is preferably defined by two cutting faces 9 forming an ALFA angle between them, which defines the maximum bending angle between the wings 7 . This angle is for example about 90 ° , but can also be di f ferent depending on the requirements .
[0048] Panel 1 also includes at least one pair of locking loops 15 , each arranged on a respective wing 7 in the vicinity of the incision 5 .
[0049] Panel 1 with incisions and loops forms a processed panel according to the present invention which can be easily transported in a flat configuration, i . e . with outstretched wings , to the assembly location of the furniture .
[0050] Figure 4 shows the folding phase of wings 7 to form two inclined faces of the furniture part . In the example shown, they are bent to form a 90 ° angle with each other, but other inclinations are possible .
[0051] As can be seen in figure 5 , the two wings 7 are locked in relation to each other in the inclined position at least by means of a connector 20 which buttons the two loops 15 .
[0052] With reference to figure 7 , connector 20 comprises : a main body 19 with at least two faces 21 inclined towards each other,
[0053] - at least one button 22 proj ecting from each of said faces 21 , e . g . it comprises a head 22a and a spacer collar 23 by means of which the head faces face 21 , forming a space between them, which is useful to form a lock with a loop 15 .
[0054] Button 22 , for example , is a disc, and collar 23 is a cylinder with a smaller diameter than the disc, so that it forms an overall mushroom shape .
[0055] Figure 6 shows the cross-section of the loops 15, each of which extends to such a depth that it passes through an outer layer 2 of the panel and all or part of at least one inner layer, leaving the other outer layer 3 intact .
[0056] Each of the loops 15 comprises at least one compartment 25 in the inner layer 4 and an access opening to compartment 26 in the outer layer 2 of the panel . Each opening 26 is shaped to form a passage zone 26a and a retention zone 26b, wherein the passage zone is larger than the retaining zone , in particular it has a dimension compatible with the passage of the connector button 22 , and the retention zone has a dimension compatible with the passage of the spacer collar 23 but not of the button 22 .
[0057] The loop 15 is configured to allow the insertion of the button 22 orthogonally to the plane of the panel 1 , and the sliding of the inserted button between the insertion zone 26a and the retaining zone 26b, preferably in a direction parallel to the plane of the panel 1 .
[0058] The loops 15 in this example are made on the same main face la of the panel on which the incision 5 is made , but this is not limiting, in fact as we shall see in later examples it could be on the opposite face . The choice depends on which face remains exposed to view in the final furniture , so that the loop and connectors are placed on the opposite face .
[0059] The part of the furniture thus created is indicated as a whole by the reference number 10 .
[0060] Other implementations and variants of the present invention will be described below, where equal or similar parts will be indicated by the same reference number or same numbers increased by 100 or multiples thereof .
[0061] With reference to figures 8 , 9 , 10 and 11 , the steps of making a part of furniture 110 according to a second form of implementation of the invention are shown .
[0062] The part of the furniture 110 is a drawer and its manufacturing process di f fers from that of the furniture part 10 in that the panel 1 is processed by forming a plurality of incisions 5 , so as to form a plurality o f wings 7 . They have a rectangular shape , and comprise a central wing arranged to form the bottom of the drawer, and a plurality of side wings , arranged to form the edges of the drawer .
[0063] The loops 15 are made on the side wings , on face lb of the panel opposite face la on which the incisions 5 are made . This advantageously allows the connectors 120 to be positioned on the outside of the drawer .
[0064] The connectors 120 have the same buttons 22 as the connectors 20 , proj ecting from inclined faces 21 , however the latter have an orientation opposite to that of the connector faces 20 . In the shown examples , the faces 21 belong to an L-shaped main body, where in the connector 20 the faces are on the outside of the L, and in the connector 120 on the inside .
[0065] The loops 15 are identical to those on the furniture part 10 .
[0066] Also , in this form of implementation, the connectors button loops formed on wings 7 of the same panel .
[0067] Figures 12 to 18 show the steps involved in making a furniture body 220 , which represents a third form of implementation of the invention .
[0068] The process involves setting up a first panel 1 to make a first part of the body 220a . This panel is called, for the sake of simplicity, structural base panel .
[0069] The panel 1 is cut with two parallel incisions 5 on the same main face la, so as to form three wings 7 , aligned with each other, and arranged to form three U- shaped body walls .
[0070] On the same main face la, a plurality of loops 215 are provided at least one edge 6a of the panel , intended to be placed in a back area of the final furniture .
[0071] In addition, one or more loops 215 are arranged on the same main face at a pair o f edges 6b of the panel at the apexes of the U and intended to be placed in a foot area of the final furniture .
[0072] The loops 215 have in common with the loops 15 the fact that they are blind in the sense of the thickness of the panel , i . e . they do not cross at least one of the two outer layers 3 , however they di f fer from the loops 15 in that they are open not only on one of the main faces but also on the respective edges 6a and 6b of the panel 1 . In this way, the corresponding connectors 220 , described below, can be inserted parallel to the main plane P, as shown in figure 18 , and locked against exit movement orthogonal to the plane P .
[0073] In addition to the first panel 1 prepared to form the U-walls , the process involves making at least one locking panel 201 .
[0074] The locking panel 201 is prepared by incising a second panel 1 so as to form three edge wings 7b around a main central rectangular wing 7a intended to form the back of the body 210 .
[0075] The edge wings comprise slots 216 passing through all the layers of the panel 1 and arranged to couple with the loops 215 of the first U- folded panel 1 .
[0076] After incision and reali zation of the loops , the wings 7 of the first panel 1 are folded to form said U and are locked in said position by blocking against the second panel 201 .
[0077] In particular, the 220 connectors button into respective blind loops 215 and through slots 216 of the two panels , where the loops 215 are those on edge 6a .
[0078] For this purpose , each of the connectors 220 , best seen in figure 19 , comprises two buttons 22 connected by a spacer collar 23 . In this way, the two buttons face each other through a gap created by the spacer collar 23 which is narrower than the buttons and passes through the loops and slots .
[0079] The body 210 also includes a second locking panel 201b arranged to block the edges 6b of the U-bent panel 1 .
[0080] The second locking panel is made in a similar manner to the first locking panel 201 , and substantially di f fers from it , in addition to its shape , by the through-slots 217 , which unlike the through-slots 216 have a non-linear insertion path of the connector in the planar direction, as best seen in figure 18 . Thi s advantageously avoids a separation gap between the two panels when buttoned together .
[0081] In general , we observe that instead of the locking panels 201 and 201b, it is possible to button the wings to any other structural element , of which such locking panels are only one example . It is also not excluded that the connectors are integral to said structural locking element , thus including only the buttons related to the loops 215 made in the basic structural panel 1 .
[0082] With reference to figures 20 and 21 , it should be noted that panel 1 is suitable to additional processing similar to the blind loops described for connecting accessories . Thanks to this , the connection is highly aesthetic as it conceals the connection parts in the thickness of the panel .
[0083] The example shows the connection of a panel 1 to a 360 hinge . The panel is processed to make on one of its main faces la a connection loop 315 blind in the direction of thickness , which di f fers from the loop 15 in that the inner compartment 325 is in communication with the outside of the main face la by means of an opening 326 comprising two retaining zones 326b opposite to a central passage zone 326a .
[0084] In each retaining zone 326b, the head of a screw 320 is retained so that the threaded shank is proj ecting outward from the panel and available for connection to the hinge 360 . The screw heads are inserted through the central transition zone 326a and moved to the respective retention zones .
[0085] Figures 22 and 23 show another possible additional processing 415 , use ful for example for connecting a panel 1 with a LED strip 460 .
[0086] For this purpose , the additional processing 515 is a blind loop slot in the direction of the thickness , which comprises an inner compartment 425 open to the outside by means of a passage opening 426a on an edge 6 of the panel and a retaining opening 426b on a main face la of the panel . The passage opening 426a and the retaining opening 426b are therefore orthogonal to each other .
[0087] The internal compartment 425 is of such dimensions as to accommodate the LED strip 460 , the passage opening is of such dimensions as to permit its insertion parallel to the main plane P of the panel , and the retaining opening 426b is of such dimensions as to be smaller than the width of the LED strip 460 so as to prevent its exit orthogonally to said main plane .
[0088] It is evident that the described forms of implementation have certain characteristics in common . For example , all forms of wing-blocking implementation have in common : at least one multilayer panel 1 of the type indicated above including : at least one incision on a blind main face la / lb in the direction of the thickness and such as to define two wings 7 of the panel and a folding line between them;
[0089] - at least one loop on main face la / lb blind in the direction of thickness
[0090] - at least one connector including at least one button configured to be inserted and retained in said loop ; where the wings are held by the connector in a folded position relative to each other in at least one o f the following ways :
[0091] - by buttoning together two wings of said panel both comprising one of said loops , wherein the connector comprises a button for each of said slots ;
[0092] - by buttoning at least two wings of said panel to a structural locking body .
[0093] The structural locking body can, for example , be integral to the connector or include a button loop to it , in which case the connector includes a relative second button .
[0094] We note in general that the face on which each incision is made depends on the desired folding direction of the resulting wings , so that in the case of a plurality of incisions , it is not excluded that they may all be located on the same main face or on opposite main faces la and lb of panel 1 . The same applies to the loops , which are placed on the faces of panel 1 in such a way as to minimise or eliminate their visibility in the finished furniture .
[0095] Figures 24 , 25 and 26 show some variants of 520 , 620 and 720 connectors useful for some common wing and loops orientation combinations.
[0096] The 520 connector comprises a V-shaped main body 521, where each arm carries a button 22 on its outwardfacing faces. Such a connector is useful for wings inclined at angles other than 90°, e.g. acute.
[0097] The connector 620 comprises a U-shaped main body 621 and three buttons 22, one on the outer face of each section. Such a connector is, for example, useful for connecting various parts of a piece of furniture together .
[0098] The 720 connector comprises a main T-body 721, where there is a button 22 on both the shank and the head of the T, the one on the head being preferably on the face opposite that from which the shank is projected.
[0099] All of the described implementation forms can be used as part of a piece of furniture according to the present invention.
[0100] We can see that it is conveniently possible to use particularly thin panels, e.g. up to 4 mm thick, without reducing their structural capacity. This makes it possible not only to create new aesthetics with slimmer lines, without compromising strength, but also to recover useful space.
[0101] The thickness of the non-metallic layer is e.g. about 3 mm.
[0102] Preferably the buttons, and more generally the connectors, are made of metallic material, e.g. aluminium or its alloys. It is also possible to make them from polymeric materials, e.g. compounds. In general, it is preferable that the buttons, and more generally the connectors, are made of a material with a shear strength greater than or equal to 40 Mpa, preferably greater than or equal to 50 Mpa.
[0103] Preferably, the buttons are generally circular, with a diameter greater than 10 mm.
[0104] In general, it is preferable for the thickness of the buttons to be greater than or equal to 1 mm and less than or equal to 3 mm, a preferred value being, for example, 1.3 mm.
[0105] We also note that the surface finish of panels 1 has no particular limitations, so that it is ideally suitable to endless simple customisation by applying appropriate designs, e.g. in the form of surface films or varnishes. Thus, it is possible to obtain furniture in various colours or motifs, such as wood, stone, brick, etc .
[0106] Finally, we note that the button connection described here is also useful for joining modular furniture together, such as bodies and kitchen tops, to make a complete piece of furniture, thus making them easy to couple and uncouple.
